He was in character the whole time on a phone call.
I'm trying to give him the award and I felt bad for Sarah though.

It was rainbow bright to riding a horse.

I mean, she put a lot of effort into it and I felt pretty bad.
I think she was pretty bummed, but she was, but I also think it was fair.

like the little kitty stuff doesn't play as well to the crowd as like the more mature

I remember I rattled the oil, the oil cap loose, the drain plug.
And then when that thing, when it runs out of oil, has a fail
safe and it turns off the generator, but this is like,
basically right into the show.
And we're looking for oil and we got it from someone's car.
And it was like a whole, you know, oh my God.

I forgot about that.
We got stories.
We are definitely three travel and stories and such.
So anyways, the, everything else went off without a hitch.

you know, he was the one who knew they had it,

And it's just, it's funny how in this space,
like you can be Instagram and like text buddies with people in the
industry for years and not meet them.
Like when Woodward, I interacted with her for years,
didn't meet her till like that until we had the,
remember when we debuted, we had the R movie,
our film for the rally movie.

That was the first time I actually met her in person.

but like him in particular, I just until very recently at car week,
we were coordinating on some car shit and getting his cars to motor lux.

up with him for a little bit.

Anything you want to add on SoCal art?
No, I think I mentioned this earlier on a call that you and I were on,
but this was my favorite show we've had outside of the first one.
The first one was really special.
You know, it was like, it was kind of like when everything,
like we saw that we had really struck a nerve, right?
And like, all right, this is, this is about to blow up and who was there.
We got an automobile magazine because of that.
And you know, it was, it was a really.
So you're talking LA show specifically or SoCal show?
LA show specifically or SoCal shows.
Yeah.
But the first one was a really big deal, right?
And that one is like special in its own way,
but out of all the other ones we've done, like I really enjoyed this show.
Like just cause the way from an operational standpoint, like, you know,
we just, we were just on it and we were, you know,
we were like a super whale, well-oiled machine at this point.
And not that we haven't been before, but also just like the placement,
all of our car placement was really solid.
We had really good cars and like we had great partners and the vibe was really,
really great.
Like it was so laid back and really fun.
The food was good.
Like the lines weren't super long.
Like everything was like just pumping.

Well, that was the one thing, right?
And it's the standout thing for you.

of the whole rally actually

buses in the way.

but it made it

the rest of the trip was

in Tokyo,
the first couple of days
we were there was actually

up north.

like big hotel

and it's in the middle of nowhere dude.

little farm towns that are like hardly towns.
It's just a bunch of houses on the side of the road.
And there's like maybe a little like market or something.
And there's this one school house.
And it was closed.

I think that's a thing in Japan too.
Like places are just sometimes not open.
So it was closed.
So we go down the road a little bit.
And this wasn't even,
and there's like a couple of houses.
And there was this little,

Japanese restaurant.
This older couple is there.

Like insane ramen.

His wife's like bringing water.
They don't even sell drinks there.
They have tea.

It was amazing.

And Japan's an interesting place too.
Even in Tokyo,

They can get by on that.

like we probably gave them more customers that day
because there was like 25 of us.
Then they would have all week.

and then my family came out and we spent five days in Tokyo,

and said,

Basically it's like adjacent to Shibuya.

so we were in this rad pretty awesome little neighborhood and like
killer house and our,
like right off the main strip,
like that would walk you to Shibuya,
which we walked to several times.
It's like a 40 minute walk,
but, um,
uh,
it was like a nice little neighborhood and like there was a E 63 wagon right across the street and then two portion of cons at the house,
the other house.
And you know, there was like,
it was kind of a nice little nice neighborhood for sure.
That's a nice suburb,
like a little suburb.
And it's,
it's definitely,
um, you know,
a spot where you see something like that.
I know no bullshit.
I was in a cab driving through there on the most recent trip that I was in.
I don't know if I told you about this warrant and,
um,
I saw a W 124 with an E 60 badge,
which is like that's a,
that's a legitimate pre-merger AMG car.
And I was out my phone and it was gone.
I almost told the cab driver to go around the block.
I had my mother-in-law in the car.
I was like, I don't want to make a big scene, you know,
but it was, it was, um, right around there.

Well, like one block from our house we were staying in was a,
or two blocks was a seven 11 on that main street,
whatever that street is that goes all the way to Shabuya.
It's like two lanes each way with a center divider and everything.
It's a, it's the big street, big road there.

but there was a seven 11 right there and you would just go to that seven 11.
And you know,
people just pull off on the side of the road as long as someone's in the car.
It's cool.
And they put their flashers on.
Like if you just stood at that seven 11 for a while,
like you would just see rad cars stopping there to run into seven 11.
So like, uh, old NSX nine 11 cab, you know, brand new nine nine two,
uh, brand new Corvette, which is rare to see there.
Uh, that's a choice.
That like Nova wagon thing I posted a picture of, I think it was an,
I missed that some old,
but it was a lady driving it like a 60, like a Japanese lady,
but it was like a sixties wagon. Um,
just so much cool stuff on that street too, because that's a,
a main street and people were kind of commuting home and you know,
like every other car is a G wagon, but, um, yeah,
there's a couple of those.
There's like two other streets at last, last time you went out there,
I recommended one of them.
It's, it's omotesando.
The one that goes through Meiji Jingu, like right,
we're kind of where you were with the burger place and it goes the other
direction towards the bottom of the hill.
And there's these pedestrian bridges that you can stand on and you get all,
all kinds of cool shit through there.
And then the other neighborhood is Aoyama and Aoyama is like close to,
especially close to where the Honda showroom is.
They always have cool shit there.
And that road is just like,
there's car spotters who sit there and just like shoot all this cool shit all the
time.
AMG, Alpina, you know, Radwater stuff, you're going to see there.
Um, I mean, yeah, Japan, especially Tokyo, like is, you know,
I wouldn't say unrivaled, but it's one of the top, like, you know,
car spotting destinations in the world. If you know where to be.
Yeah.
And you see the really awful stuff too. Like in Ginza, I saw Mansory,
Lamborghini, SCV, you know, stuff like that.
And, uh, yeah.
The mobsters going nuts with that shit or the suit, all the rhinestone stuff
and weird over the top Goddy stuff. Um, yeah, there's a,
so we're Dino for, you know, formerly of speed hunters Dino sits in this
little neighborhood where it's, um, it's a Sega Fredo, like the, the old cop,
you know, the Italian coffee shop and it's a little alleyway.
And so it's sort of like, just imagine like an arch and the,
the table that he sits on is right at the apex of that turn.
Just imagine an arch that goes around the building.
It's a round building.
And so you see the cars like right in front of you, like they come,
it's not great for photos, but they pass like within three feet from you.
And so like,
I would sit with them there when I would visit and all day long dude,
just like whatever you can think of, like including some of this gnarly,
you know, like over the top over Rod stuff, but yeah,
there's so many cool little spots like that.
It's cool.

Japan does car culture better than almost anywhere else.
It's like right below West Cliff for car spotting.

I've been on two wheels for a long time.
Obviously, when I was a kid, I rode a lot off-road.
Kind of went away from it for a long time.
And then when I was at Jalopnik the first time,
we had our motorcycle guy injure his hand in a way
that he couldn't pull a clutch anymore.
So we didn't have a motorcycle guy.
So they started asking like,
who are we going to send on these motorcycle press trips?
And I was like, I'll get my motorcycle license for this.
Why not?

And I went to Bonneville with Indian,
like probably 2018 or 2019 was the first time.
And I kind of got hooked then and they sent me a press loaner.
My first press loan bike was a thousand pound Indian.
And so like my previous street experience
was my little 50 CC Honda.

But I had had plenty of off-road experiences.
You're going to like the opposite end of the spectrum,
the total opposite end.
And they were like, yeah,
here we'll drop off this road master and just ride it to Seattle.
Of course it's called a road master.
What else would it be?
So I rode from Reno to Seattle on this bike
that was literally 950 pounds that I've never ridden before.
And I was like, yeah, let's go.
And so ever since then I've been.
Of course.
It'll be fine.

So I've been hooked on motorcycles and I love electric
and I love hybrid and I love, you know,
all the tech that we're doing.
I'm a very tech heavy guy.
Are there hybrid motorcycles?
There are.
I've actually tested one for Jalopnik.
It's rad Kawasaki built one.
It's a little half baked.
Shocking.
A little bit.
Could never see that coming.
But yeah, it was a ninja.
Ninja seven hybrid, I think is what they call it.
And it's really, really well built,
but like it's a little heavy.
The wheelbase is a little too long.
Like I wrote it on some pretty gnarly, like twisty roads.
Yeah.
And it's fast as all get out.
Like you can, you can do like over boost with the hybrid
and like zoom away.
So they say that it's like the efficiency of a 250,
but the speed of a liter bike,
which is kind of what it delivers.
Torque fills basically.
So it was fun, but it was also like not quite there.
Yeah.
It needed another couple of years of development.
Interesting.
Have you ridden a turbo bike?
Like an old 80s or 90s turbo bike?
I have.
Talk about something that could use some torque fill like that.
This is the opposite, right?
Like I was wondering like if you were going to say
that the transition is like where it's gnarly,
but it sounds like it's, it's pretty,
and that's probably seamless, right?
Whereas the old bikes, there's lag like crazy, right?
Yeah.
It's relatively well integrated.
The, the issue is when you're in electric mode,
you can't switch from electric to hybrid on the fly
and it runs out at 45 miles an hour on a full electric.
So like every once in a while,
I would go to merge onto the highway and I'd be in EV mode
and I would hit 45 and it'd be like flashing at me.
So I have to pull off the side of the road,
switch into hybrid and then go again.
So it was a little bit like, yeah,
a little not fully big.
Feels like software shit though, like pretty minor,
but then you said the wheelbase too long.
Yeah.
It's a little heavy, a little long, but I mean,
it was, it was a good riding experience,
but not quite right there, but electric,
I think I enjoy for, especially for around town stuff.
It's probably the perfect bike for most people who ride.
Yeah.
You know, you'll have a lot of people who like GS people
and Harley people and stuff and they're like,
well, if I can't do a thousand miles in a day, I don't want it.
Sure.
Which electric is not there yet.
And I'm not sure it ever will be just because of the form factor
and like the size and everything.
But around town stuff.
But around town stuff, like our bikes,
you can, it's 5.5 kilowatt hours.
You can fill it up for a dollar of electricity
and theoretically, depending on how you ride,
you could ride it all week on a dollar.
So how many miles?
Up to 120 city range.
Yeah.
That's a lot.
It is a lot.
Yeah.

It's the most in our class.
Like there's nothing that can go farther than us,
even at like a super higher.
What does your Harley do?
My Harley will theoretically do about the same.

And that was 30 grand, five years ago.

And ours, our bikes start at, well,
for that amount of range, they start at 10.

And the lower range bikes start at seven.
Okay.
So.
And I heard you earlier, you were talking about it's like 23 horsepower
and 230 pound feet of torque.
Yeah.
It'll do zero to 30 in one second
and zero to 60 in about five.
It's quick.
It's fast.
It's nimble because it's super lightweight.
Yeah.
A lot of people.
What's lightweight?
198 pounds for the small battery.
So almost everything that we're competing against
is over 100 pounds heavier than us.
And we're like, we're minimalist for a couple of reasons.
One, because we like the look of the minimalist style
of the motorcycle, but also just because it makes it
lighter, less expensive, easier to maintain.
Yeah.
There's a bunch of reasons around it.
So, yeah, having 198 pound bike for a beginner rider
is like way easier than like,
like when I got on a 950 pound India,
that was pretty gnarly.
Like I was worried about it.
Aside from my, it'll be fine attitude.

The first like year was kind of like hand built hand assembled
stuff.

Where do you say most of them are in Cleveland?

I mean, our biggest sales are to California actually.

We sell a lot of bikes to South Florida.

So we started at overland expo in Virginia.
And then it was, it was a lot of fun.
I wanted to go to that.
I've been to a couple.
There are a lot of fun.
Um, the vibes are interesting.
It's interesting cause we went to one in Denver.
That had super different vibes from the one in North Carolina.
That has super different vibes from the one out west.
Cause like the, where you can use your stuff and,
and how far off road you can go.

Um, and then we camped at that for four days with the bikes
and we were doing demo ride.
We did 350 demo rides.
So we, it's, you know, about getting butts in seats and getting
people to test them out and try them out.

Oh yeah.

So, um, we were actually camped out for our demos at Mellow Johnny's,
um, which is, um, oh God.

bike customizers there and some dealers and things.
And then came to LA and did some riding with some people and went
to events and went to Radwood and then coming up here.
And then we're going to go over to Reno.
We're doing test rides at send cut send.

Um, then I'm going to go to Salt Lake city to visit, uh, Jonathan
Klein.
He's the editor in chief of ride apart.
We're going to do some riding over there.
Then go down to SEMA where we're launching some new products and
then Dallas for electrify expo and then back home.

This is sort of a, uh, it's good.
It's like, you know, the national tour getting out there.

How are you charging on the road?
I do have an inverter in the van.

Um, and it does work.

But for the most part it's hotels.
I bring a couple of batteries into the, okay.
The batteries are removable.

Oh, that makes it really nice.

You can have a backup.
So you can just charge them.
You can charge them in a 110.
Regular 110 outlet.
Or you have an extra underscore.
Dude, that's pretty sick.
So the bikes only charge on 110.

They don't do fast charge or anything.
So it's just regular wall outlet, five or 10 amp service.
You don't need to upgrade anything.
You don't need to change anything.

Um, and, uh, the small battery will charge in about two hours
and large battery charges in about five.
And how much are extra batteries?
Uh, actually right now we're running a program where a small,
you can get extra small battery for 500 bucks.

Cause that's like, that's a pretty,
that's a cool hack right there.
And how big is the battery like physically?
Uh, it's the small ones are about 30 pounds.

So they're not too bad.
It's about size of car battery.
Yeah.
It's taller than that.
But yeah, about the same displacement,
but a little taller.
And so theoretically you can like carry it on the bike somewhere.
If you want it, if you want, if you have two small batteries,
they can go on the bike together because they're the same size
and space as a one large bag.

So we have a 2.2 kilowatt hour battery and a 5.5.

So the 5.5 takes up the whole battery box and the 2.2 is half.
Um, and the 2.2 will do about 50 ish miles on a charge in the city.

And then the 5.5 will do 120.

Um, but yeah, so theoretically you could take two of the 2.2s with you
and just swap them when one dies out.
And these things are pretty small.
They're like, they're more like seven, eight size motorcycle size.

But I think the differentiator is that it's street legal.

Like ours are fully street legal.
They're highway legal.
They go 75 miles an hour.

Oh, right now I have Japan on my mind because I was just there and I think it would be good
to do a DWA rally over there.
My number one is Mexico, but it is not possible at this current junction.
But, um, yeah, I mean, it is possible.
They do the, the Carrera there.
And I mean, it's just, it's, you just have to be in cahoots with the right people.
It's kind of the key thing, you know?
Um, yeah, I don't want to have to be in cahoots with people that go drive around.

of herst castle, like 20s and 30s.

But I mean, you'd have modern stuff just like goodwood does,

the Hearst heritage, which still may happen someday.
We'll see if I can get the right people in the room.
But, uh, mine would be, I mean, you're asking for my dream,

Disneyland is you'd have like different experiences in
different worlds, uh, based, based on the cars.
