02:02
Hello everybody and welcome back to the P1 podcast with Matt and Tommy as you can probably tell.
02:07
No Matt today as he is sorting out his internet which hopefully will be set up for the weekend.
02:13
We promise it's not because Ferrari have had a bit of a shocker.
02:17
But I am instead joined by our old buddy, Katie Fairman,
02:22
young journalist of the year, Modesport UK. Had to mention it because you're far too modest to
02:28
not say it. How are you Katie? Oh I'm really well, thank you. It's always lovely to chat with
02:32
you Tommy and talk about the Dutch Grand Prix practice. Yes and what a practice session
02:39
you've joined us for. Normally these practice sessions you wonder like how we're
02:44
going to do a 20 minute podcast or video on it and instead we just had absolute chaos,
02:52
loads of incidents, probably more incidents than we've had in any practice session
02:56
through the whole year combined it felt like. Very much so, yeah I don't know if that's a good
03:01
luck or bad luck on my half. I'm sure the drivers won't want me doing any more appearances on
03:06
the podcast after today. But yeah an uncharacteristically crazy practice session
03:11
like you say. Definitely. So we'll dive straight into the first question actually which is from
03:16
Nixie underscore one. Why did so many drivers go off? Was it due to the rustiness after the
03:22
summer break or tricky conditions? Now I think it is a bit of both to be fair because
03:28
they are, I think it's a bit of a baptism of fire when they come back from the summer break
03:34
and of all the tracks for them to go on is Zandvoort which is a track that punishes
03:40
mistakes. We've seen it before. Now this is a, it's not an uncommon thing to see people going off
03:46
in a practice session at Zandvoort just thinking back to like the previous couple of years you had
03:52
of course the famous, sorry infamous I should probably say Daniel Riccardo going off
04:00
breaking his hand of course at that turn. Oscar Piestri spun off before that you had
04:06
Logan Sargent had a massive crash last year, Holkenberg spun off in the last couple of years as
04:11
well. So we do see these incidents at Zandvoort and I think it is just a case of the fact that
04:19
they're all pushing maybe a little bit of rustiness but it's just a very very
04:25
difficult track, a very kind of when we when we spoke to Alex Alban in our video he said
04:32
is like a go-kart track and it punishes mistakes if you get slightly wide.
04:36
It so does. I know that Zandvoort doesn't provide the most exciting race day. There's not really
04:42
many overtaking opportunities apart from basically turn one but yeah for me I love these old school
04:48
historic tracks where it is really punishing and exhilarating for a driver to do a lap of it.
04:54
It's about one of the only circuits that I've actually done a lap of on the F1 game
04:58
and I had the best time of my life driving it was so much fun but like you say it is really
05:04
challenging and yes there could be a little bit of rustiness because of the summer break although
05:08
you know I was listening to the Sky Sports coverage and they were saying that Lando was
05:11
doing all sorts of go-karting over the summer break and I'm sure that these drivers if they
05:16
have an opportunity will always be jumping in a car and pushing it a little bit to the limits
05:20
to try and you know replicate that feeling but also I think something that's worth noting
05:26
might not have had an impact in today's but the circuit is right on the beach and
05:31
wind conditions can change quite dramatically so perhaps that was a part of it. We had I think
05:37
if my memory serves me correctly Verstappen and Carlos Sainz going off at turn one a few years
05:41
ago because of that wind so yeah that could be a factor but yeah it's certainly been
05:48
very weird. It felt like every five minutes there was a yellow flag being
05:52
way for somebody having a little off. Yeah definitely I mean we kind of almost it's almost
05:57
comical in an elite sport to be like oh it's a bit windy but look at the last qualifying session at
06:04
the hangaro ring and how those wind conditions changed and it went from being you know a complete
06:10
McLaren lockout to something completely crazy so we'll start with with FP1 no surprise really
06:17
that McLaren a 1-2 Norris leading from Piastri, Lance Stroll was a surprise P3 but unfortunately
06:25
one person that did get caught out by those tricky conditions and a tricky circuit was Kimi Antonelli
06:32
he's had a horrible run it has to be said going into this summer break and me and Matt have
06:37
mentioned many times on the podcast in this this kind of break that of all the drivers
06:42
that needed that summer break it was Kimi Antonelli to kind of rejuvenate himself he had a great start
06:48
to the the year that's kind of easily forgotten because of how badly it kind of has been the
06:55
last few races but such a small error but such a costly one because any other circuit you are
07:04
just running wide onto some runoff or or anything else and you're straight back on because you
07:09
know you didn't damage the car or anything you're just getting beached in the gravel so
07:13
really unfortunate for Antonelli and it happened so early in the session
07:17
it did I mean when he got those early laps on you could see the bottom of his Mercedes was
07:22
sparking like crazy so they obviously had the floor super super low and yeah just a
07:28
silly little mistake and it's one of those things that maybe in previous seasons if
07:31
Antonelli was the only rookie on the grid you could kind of put it down to oh well you
07:35
know he maybe hasn't driven this track as many times but we've got obviously such a wealth of
07:40
rookies on the grid and you even had people like Bortoletto up there in the in the kick
07:45
salber at one point and Bearman as well doing some good laps so yeah we can't really put it
07:51
down to just oh he's a rookie because you know there are people in a similar position
07:55
on that grid that weren't making those mistakes so yeah I hope for Antonelli's sake that he
08:00
can kind of come back stronger obviously he managed to get going again with FP2 there was a
08:05
little worry that it was going to be rained off entirely and so there was worry that he wasn't
08:10
going to get a chance to try his practice starts because here where the pit lane exit
08:16
comes straight out into the track you can't really do any kind of pit lane or practice starts
08:21
even so you know it isn't just a case of getting that track experience but there are other
08:25
things that he wouldn't have been able to do if FP2 didn't happen but yeah just a really unfortunate
08:31
mistake from him but hopefully you know we've got Monza coming up next a home race for him it's a
08:38
circuit that he has got so much experience in junior series so I'm hoping fingers crossed that maybe
08:46
if it's not Zanvort this weekend then it's Monza next weekend where he can turn his season
08:51
around yeah he's had so much experience at Monza in Formula 2 but not in Formula 1 because obviously
08:59
that was the track where he went off immediately in that practice session last year but it's
09:06
harsh on Kim Antonelli because you look at that session and equally we'll get on to FP2 as well
09:14
where loads of drivers are making errors even very experienced ones look at George Russell he
09:19
went off as well but luckily for him he carried on and another driver that went off was a certain
09:26
Max Verstappen and unlike Kim Antonelli he was in a weird way he was fortunate that his off was
09:34
at the end of the session so he basically didn't lose any running but it's still a pretty
09:40
embarrassing error really to to make and very uncharacteristic you don't normally see Max
09:47
Verstappen these days going off in a completely dry session and the fact that it was straight after
09:54
a practice start as well was pretty crazy it was can I can I be honest with you in the P1 listeners
10:00
that as soon as FP1 finished I'm busy working I've got other projects I'm working on today I
10:06
turned off my TV and then sure enough went online and was like what how did I miss this during
10:11
the session and then realized it was from the practice starts but yeah really unusual
10:16
mistake from Max perhaps he can style it out and say oh I just wanted to give the fans some more time
10:22
of seeing my car up close in the gravel chap I don't know but um yeah it was a very strange
10:28
mistake from Max I mean I really hope that people won't suddenly start to say oh you know
10:33
it's a beginning to bottle it he's making all these mistakes because I think it was just
10:37
a little slip up and like you say we saw so many people this weekend make these errors but it
10:42
wouldn't it wouldn't surprise me if there are some people out there who were going to try and
10:45
use that one small mistake to kind of make a bigger story out of it but yeah it was a really
10:52
really odd odd thing from Max yeah and he's finding the limits it was obviously the fact that it's
10:58
come straight after a practice start is probably him seeing how much he can push turn one whether
11:04
that's something that was quite funny actually was me and Matt watched managed to watch the
11:10
the session together as we were flying back from the Netherlands of our p1 live shows and
11:16
and we we got back we were watching it together and it was yeah when we when we watched it
11:23
it was funny because Matt was like that that's Max practicing for a dive bomb at turn one and and
11:30
it while kind of like tongue-in-cheek it is kind of true because he's finding the limits
11:35
and we know Zanvo incredibly hard to overtake unless it's 2023 and it rains and then you get
11:40
the most overtakes of all time apparently which please let's have another one of those yeah
11:47
finding the limits and instead went straight off let's go to fp2 then and the top three were
11:55
Norris Fernando Alonso and Oscar Piastri we'll start with the big moment from that session and
12:07
it's a very big crash for for Lance Stroll after Martin looking very good indeed and and
12:13
Stroll had a brilliant fp1 where he was third but a big crash at that turn where of course
12:23
we mentioned earlier Daniel Ricardo crashed that that banked curve and a question from
12:28
p1 patreon r&b sheep is stroll fully okay he was showing some discomfort in his right wrist now
12:38
we've I've not personally seen anything yet he's not I don't think he's been asked about it you
12:43
think that he did get interviewed after the session and you do think that had there been
12:48
anything really bad he would have probably gone to a medical center or mentioned it during that
12:54
that kind of incident but it is something that I think probably a lot of people even I think it
12:59
max came on the radio and asked about about it because it's that first thing you think of with
13:03
Lance Stroll because he's had that that issue with his wrist even earlier in the season
13:09
and missing missing that race exactly is it fair to say he's got maybe some of the most
13:14
vulnerable risks in the business I don't really it's it's a yeah unfortunate one for him and it's
13:21
always makes me wince whenever I see a driver fail to take their hands off the steering wheel
13:25
because we've seen it you know in various championships like you say even with Ricardo or
13:30
in other series as well that sometimes that can relate to how like you know bones being broken
13:35
in your hands so I'm really pleased to hear that he's all right like you say tommy I think
13:40
if it was significant he would have been sent to the medical center I'm sure that Aston Martin would
13:46
be quick to release a statement and say that you know this is a situation so he seemed to be all
13:52
kind of semi-smiles should we say in the garage obviously not beaming from ear to ear
13:56
after causing that shunt but yeah really disappointing because like you say Aston Martin
14:01
have been looking so quick and Lance especially obviously third in FP1 so to then lose out
14:07
on such important running especially for like you know quality prep and everything like that it was
14:13
it was a big knock but yeah it was a really big crash it was yeah very big crash the fact
14:19
there's no runoff at that corner I think is what what makes it so you know the the actual damage
14:25
of that car was massively significant it's very rare that you see the the whole side of the car
14:31
completely like you know torn to shreds really yeah and yeah the the way he kind of
14:38
kept his hands on the wheel like you don't have time to really like remove them in the
14:43
internet it happens in such a split second and the fact that there's no runoff there like on
14:46
a lot of other circuits you're going straight into a straight into the wall and it was a yeah
14:52
really nasty nasty shunt but glad to see Lance Stroll is okay after that and I think
14:59
particularly for him as well because of Aston Martin looking so good another driver that caused
15:05
a red flag was Alex Albin he went off into the gravel and couldn't get going again
15:14
you know we'll say that the the P1 curse our last driver to interview was Alex Albin
15:18
so apologies apologies Alex but hopefully he's got that that bad luck out the way
15:28
early but yeah another red flag just so many incidents in this session it's crazy
15:34
yeah gravel proving to be you know a very difficult thing to get yourself out of once you're in it
15:40
obviously he kept the car on reversed a little bit sort of given the best angle to
15:46
to make that maneuver to get himself onto that nice smooth tarmac that was so close but yet so far
15:52
and yeah managed to to beach the car and yeah like you say caused another red flag luckily I guess
15:58
wasn't far for him to go in terms of walk back to the garage but still you know you can that's never
16:05
a way that a driver wants to end a session and you could tell that normally when drivers keep
16:09
their full racing helmet on it probably means that they're not in a very good place and not
16:14
to speak to them so he was escorted back to the garage by one of the marshals as well which
16:21
I mean I don't think he was going to be going and running off anywhere I don't really know why he
16:25
needed escorting or if that's standard practice maybe it is but yeah a bit of an embarrassing way to
16:31
end that session but yeah he wasn't like we said so many times in this podcast wasn't the only guy
16:37
to to find himself in that gravel he certainly wasn't P1Patreon Dan has asked with so many
16:43
cars getting beached and spinning out today could we see less than 12 finishes during the Grand Prix
16:48
I think if it's a dry race I do I do think a lot of this is that the fact that they're pushing in
16:55
practice sessions and they are allowed to make mistakes you don't see it as much in the Grand Prix
17:00
if it's raining and chaotic yeah we could we could see absolute chaos again because it is a punishing
17:06
circuit but we have maybe seen this trend of Zandvoort being really punishing in practice
17:11
where they find the limits and then when they get to the race they're all a bit more
17:15
bit more sensible I mean question on the fly do you like these kind of
17:23
circuits that punish the drivers or would you much rather see them be able to
17:27
be almost like pushed back in or be able to carry on I'm a sucker for yeah circuits that
17:34
do punish mistakes I know that it's a bit of an unpopular opinion but I do really
17:39
like street circuits for that reason don't get me wrong I don't think they should be
17:42
popping up a new one on the calendar every single year and as a result we could be losing really
17:47
iconic special tracks but I do I love you know a circuit like Imola I might be one of the only
17:53
people in the world that's going to be sad that that's off the calendar but for me you know I
17:56
used to really enjoy watching some of the racing around there because like you say if you do get
18:01
a wheel out of shape a wheel on the grass that's it you're in a barrier you're out you know
18:06
so yeah I do I do really like those kind of circuits although I guess if you've got a favorite driver
18:13
who's maybe been caught out a few too many times by a certain circuit you might not be a fan but
18:18
yeah for me I would much rather have it the mistakes of punishers why you know I'm always
18:24
so keen for things like more gravel traps Austria is another great one like you know
18:29
that like turn three four part of the track where they've got that gravel trap and if you get too far
18:36
over it you have to suffer the consequence and you might end up losing a certain amount of positions
18:41
like things like that I think are really good for the entertainment side of things and also
18:46
just reminding drivers that you know you're not stay on the track as well yeah it's amazing
18:54
how we don't have these really boring conversations about track limits and oh did you go one millimeter
19:01
over the line here when there's gravel because they can't do it and when they do go off they're in the
19:05
wall or in the gravel trap and they're losing time anyway I mean another driver that had a couple
19:12
of moments was Lewis Hamilton loving some pirouettes very well executed has to be said both
19:19
of them obviously not what he would want but flat spots on all of his tires absolutely but yeah he had
19:26
spins in fp1 and fp2 Ferrari yeah you know I joked at the start of the show about Matt's not here
19:34
because of Ferrari they did finish fp2 in six and eight so it wasn't as bad but it's not looking
19:45
great and I think shall Leclerc even radio during fp1 saying we are miles off yeah it's not looking too
19:51
good I feel like apart from Hamilton's you know ballet pirouettes that he was doing in the
19:57
middle of the track they had a fairly anonymous both like both practice sessions I'm pretty sure
20:03
it was Leclerc that came on the radio maybe having a go at Sonoda I don't want to point
20:08
blame if this isn't the case but you know getting annoyed at Yuki and him not realizing that
20:14
he was behind him but apart from that I don't really remember seeing them too much and yeah it's
20:20
especially with Aston Martin making this obviously quite significant jump
20:25
it's a slightly worrying time to to be Ferrari fans sorry Matt

the other bizarre incident that i uh that i thought about was the the piastry and
25:55
russell incident in the pit which was very strange just continuing the chaos even as they
26:02
came into the pit lane of course some for being that crazy pit lane that's even smaller than
26:10
monica which is quite a mad thing to to think about for a purpose built track but piastry
26:16
coming into the pits and almost just seeming like george russell didn't even know that george
26:23
russell was there and with how there's not like that second lane that they can pull into he basically
26:30
was was getting himself into position to be wheeled back into the garage and almost just
26:35
smashed into the side of george russell now as we have been recording there has been
26:44
the news thankfully for osco piastry fans he has not been disqualified from the championship
26:50
it is a 5000 euro fine for mclaren which i'm not surprised that these these kind of incidents
26:58
i do think that's the right decision um to to just find uh find the teams for for something in
27:05
in a practice session that's not created too much harm it's it's just an unfortunate incident
27:10
but i don't think there needs to be you know a huge massive clamp down and and fine or or like
27:17
a penalty for that yeah i did think you were going to say a five place grid drop well 5000
27:22
place grid drop that's what i should have done yeah yeah yeah yeah um but no that was very a very
27:28
bizarre incident like obviously popped up on the tv and i'd like to think that i'm quite good i
27:32
watched too many videos on tiktok and instagram of like dash cam where you try and guess what the
27:37
issue is going to be um and sorry just getting a full insight into my brain here um and sometimes
27:44
i like to think that i'm quite good at predicting what's what's going to happen next and with that i
27:48
was like oh maybe he's gone in too hot he's going too quickly no i did not expect that at all with
27:54
osco obviously being like just trying to be reversed into the box but um yeah i'm totally
27:59
with you there tell me i don't think it would have been fair to penalize piastry because
28:03
that's also like a joint um i guess blame game between maybe piastry not looking in his
28:10
mirrors but also mclaren giving him those instructions um so yeah just a bit of a weird
28:15
incidence but i mean 5000 pounds is about a drop in the ocean to mclaren so um yeah
28:23
very very true no well especially not with their new title sponsor of course mastercard as well
28:28
that's true yeah so yeah they're they're probably not sure to their a penny or two it's
28:32
funny you mentioned dash cams i'm going to mention a really rogue random story that's
28:35
love it this is what it's all about um but uh some p1 fans sent me a video this was like a
28:45
couple years ago when we just started of um a channel that's just dedicated to dash cam footage
28:51
from like crashes in america and someone shared a clip and in it they're listening to the p1
28:57
podcast um so you literally like have this moment where you kind of got the dash cam and
29:03
you can just hear me being like uh nika holkenberg is uh having a quite a good run of form isn't he
29:08
and then crashes into uh into a car at a junction so okay random off topic thing that no i love it
29:16
i had to i don't love that crash though i hope they're all right but they were fine thankfully
29:20
that's when you know you've made it absolutely uh we'll go on to finando alonso now of course
29:26
has to be mentioned p1 patreon blaxon alonso podium question mark i would love to see it
29:32
i would very much love to see it astin martin of course i said they were going to be the big
29:37
flop of the weekend so they've turned up with an absolute rocket ship and uh hopefully this form
29:42
does continue because i want to see alonso back at the front again do do i dare say are we going
29:49
to be seeing a 2023 season in reverse where uh where alonso got all those podiums at the start
29:56
of the year is it going to be where alonso is now going to start you know challenging at the front
30:02
um you know mclaren are clear but there's of course going to be a spot on the podium other teams may be
30:08
kind of not developing as much or that they're kind of like locked into what they're doing with
30:13
upgrades and things maybe astin martin can get a podium i'd love to see alonso on there but
30:18
you know if stroll stroll recovers and they get his car fixed and hoping for his sake that he
30:23
doesn't have gearbox penalties and things based on on the changes that they're going to have to make
30:29
i think an astin martin podium could could be could be on yeah i think i think even if you
30:36
like you say throughout the rest of the season there's the chance that that could happen especially
30:42
like you say if other teams are kind of really putting a lot of focus into those new 2026
30:47
regulations and adrian new year appears to just be doing it in his sleep uh it could well be that
30:52
maybe they can catch some of the others off off guard but i mean they also were just looking
30:56
really competitive so who knows i mean if it does rain which i think it's scheduled to rain for the
31:03
rest of the weekend i mean a few years ago forgive me i can't remember the year but you remember
31:08
when fernando lanso had the absolutely rocket start um and managed to find the grip where
31:14
basically nobody else thought to like basically went up on the banking it was yeah that was awesome
31:19
it was so good um so who knows maybe he can uh do a deja vu like do the same again um and yeah get
31:28
his hands on that that trophy which i really like this anvil trophy i think it's a bit unique the
31:34
big cup and also like seeing them in person they are massive yeah it's very cool yeah shout out to
31:41
the trophy because it is it is cool to see like shout out to the trophy shout out to the trophy uh
31:47
doing a kind of trophy based on the kind of culture because that's you know like dutch
31:53
pottery i don't know the exact term for it but like that's like relevant to the place that it is so
31:58
that that is cool and i'd love to see lanso get on the podium again um i do wonder how much
32:04
ustin martin based on their their form i know it's only practice but based on the fact that
32:08
we've had two dry sessions and they've been very quick maybe weirdly praying that it's um
32:14
that it's actually going to be uh dry for the rest of the weekend but not looking like it so far
32:19
we'll move uh on to our final person that we have to talk about and that is landon orris brilliant
32:25
job uh topped both sessions really good here last year of course uh won the race in dominant
32:33
fashion very much in the championship hunt surely he is going to be the guy to be uh this weekend
32:39
based off what we saw today i think so it's certainly looking like it's going to go that way
32:45
um i'm pretty sure i mean who knows what could happen but that we'll see at least one of the
32:50
mclaren's on the top step of that podium ready to give my p1 jinx to the podcast but um yeah
32:56
low lando does seem to be really quite comfortable here um although never write off oscar piastry no
33:03
you can't write off piastry you just can't no i know it's a very boring answer and i feel like it's
33:08
probably the same answer that you and i've had on every single podcast so far this year but yeah um
33:13
oscar piastry really has been pretty sensational this year as has lando um but yeah if i were to
33:21
go based off of the the results today then i think that this could be another one for lando
33:26
which makes the championship all the more exciting so i'm all for it it would be of course yeah
33:31
flando takes the victory and piastry's second we're looking at what must be only like a couple
33:37
of points separating them so don't ask me to do maths live please yeah very true uh as we're
33:43
before we head off i will just put you completely on the spot now um sorry for that uh
33:49
how have you found this this championship uh basal and who do you think is going to
33:55
be the if you had to guess at this moment in time between piastry and norris uh piastry
34:01
i would say um i think that he has just kept such a cool level head apart from obviously
34:09
when he got that penalty in and they all start to blend into one was it hungry silver stone
34:14
thank you um yeah apart from then when he obviously got quite frustrated and understandably so because
34:21
it cost him the victory i think he's you know got a very different um way like mindset to lando and
34:28
that's not a criticism of lando's but you know we've seen him he's very vulnerable he's very
34:33
honest with the media if he thinks he's had a bad race he's very vocal about it and i really
34:38
you know have a lot of admiration for lando about that but you know other drivers that
34:43
are maybe slightly more experienced have said that that might come back to bite him
34:47
it's one of the reasons why we don't see many drivers like that um whereas oscar you know yes
34:52
he can still admit when he's had a bad day in the office as such but he kind of reminds me of
34:58
like a amika hackening or a kimmy reikening in the sense that he's just very cool calm and collected
35:05
and i feel like maybe that in addition to his evidence talent that we've seen i mean he's
35:11
rapid over one lap he's very consistent that maybe he might just edge lando in in the fight which
35:18
yeah would be would be very interesting um but let's let's see it's going to be a fascinating
35:25
battle and i'm sure that we're going to see them come together at least once more for the rest
35:30
of the season yes i do think we are as well and let's say there's so many times we have to be
35:36
grateful that it is mclaren fighting at the front because they've got two drivers that
35:39
can win the race and of course we're going to go into this weekend as well it's it's very clear
35:46
even though you look at the gap and alonzo kind of splitting them i think you'd be very surprised
35:51
if it wasn't the mclaren's just absolute miles clear of everyone this weekend but it doesn't make
35:58
it boring because it's the two drivers going for the championship and if they're if you know
36:02
we're just focused on those two fighting then that's what we want to see as formula one fans
36:08
so we will wrap it up there katie thank you so much for
36:12
subbing in for matt while he sorts his internet out so fingers crossed he gets all that sorted
36:19
what are your final thoughts oh no oh no oh this is like old times oh i really haven't thought about
36:26
that um i guess final thoughts is well done to you and matt for doing your show recently in
36:32
amsterdam or two shows in amsterdam very proud of you both as always um and thank you for thinking of me
36:38
