Welcome to another In-Wheel Time Podcast, a 30-minute mini version of the In-Wheel Time
00:07
The award-winning In-Wheel Time Car Talk Show just ahead, our story of the week, Ford's
00:12
Gajillion Dollar Gamble.
00:14
We'll also have the recalls this week, and our guests, this old car price game.
00:20
Plus, Jeff will have the crews in on events, calendars, and I'll bring you the stories
00:24
making automotive news headlines this week.
00:26
Along with Mike out of this World Bars, we always need more Jeff Seekin.
00:30
I'm Don Armstrong, so glad you could join us.
00:32
David Ainslie, our chief engineer, he's not sleeping in.
00:37
He's like an old, well, he is an old man, and he doesn't sleep in any longer than
00:41
we do, which is hardly at all.
00:44
So anyway, thanks for joining us today.
00:47
And we start off with our story of the week, and I picked this because I guess
00:53
I wanted to point out the fact that marketing and PR at a big, big global corporation, they're
01:01
pretty good, and they've sold this to the press.
01:07
Well, they've sold this story to the press, and this story is from the CEO of Ford, Jim
01:22
This company CEO, Jim Farley, contends that the automaker has found a better way of making
01:29
More than a century after founder Henry Ford pioneered the moving assembly line.
01:36
The concept behind the Ford Universal EV production system isn't new.
01:41
It's essentially the unboxed manufacturing process, Tesla touted in 2023.
01:49
And still, Elon Musk's electric vehicle maker has yet to turn the idea into reality, giving
01:54
Farley an opportunity to put Ford into the thick of the race against China for cheaper
01:59
products and more efficient manufacturing.
02:01
And you'll figure this out in a minute.
02:04
This is a story that, this particular word version I pulled from autonews.com.
02:11
But a lot of the car people have the story.
02:19
New process, which Ford's likened to an assembly tree, issues traditional linear vehicle production
02:26
in favor of three subassemblies utilizing large aluminum castings and a structural battery
02:34
that get joined together later.
02:38
The upshot, fewer parts, more ergonomically friendly workstations and faster build times.
02:44
Let me interject something here.
02:46
I watched them build.
02:47
Are you listening to this, Mars?
02:52
I'm waiting for the punchline.
02:53
Well, were you on that tour that Ford took us on at the Ford, I don't know whether it
03:03
was Michigan Assembly, one of the plants at Ford in Dearborn, around Dearborn, where
03:08
we got to see the Ford Focus put together on the assembly line?
03:13
Well, this isn't much different because you've got a unibody, the Ford Focus, which they don't
03:22
And it comes down the assembly line from paint and it comes down, down from up above and
03:28
joins the engine, which is down below with a couple of guys installing the engine
03:34
from underneath along with the already attached exhaust pipe and muffler, which is an odd-looking
03:42
thing because here you've got the engine and here's this long exhaust pipe and the muffler
03:48
They call it marrying it together.
03:50
And so here comes the car and all of that just kind of marries underneath the car.
03:56
Two guys and within 30 seconds, they have that whole assembly bolted in.
04:06
This isn't much different from that except they are building this particular unit as
04:13
So you've got three separate parts of the car.
04:19
Wall Street was generally unmoved by the August 11th announcement, which included news that
04:25
the first product on the platform would be a $30,000 midsize electric pickup built in
04:30
Louisville, Kentucky that Farley said would be faster than a Mustang and more spacious
04:35
than a Toyota RAV4.
04:37
Ford stock closed that day roughly flat, although analysts were generally upbeat
04:41
about the company's plans to lower costs.
04:46
Six billion dollars, they're going to redo this factory to change the way that they
04:53
put the car together.
05:00
Well, they're starting with this one.
05:06
Because of being an EV, it's just the battery and if it's a hybrid, then you've
05:10
got a hybrid motor.
05:11
Ford said its system will require 20% fewer total parts versus a typical vehicle with 40% fewer
05:18
workstations and 15% faster assembly time.
05:22
In other words, they're going to put all this stuff together in chunks.
05:25
Well, don't they do that now?
05:29
One of the key enablers of Ford's new production system, large aluminum pieces called unit
05:33
castings that replace smaller vehicle components, also not new.
05:40
People say the system also eliminates 22 pounds worth of wiring harnesses, requires half as
05:45
many cooling hoses and ends the need for unwieldy pop clamps.
05:51
The platform reduces the number of fasteners needed by a quarter, Ford said.
05:55
Ford is spending two billion to transform the Louisville assembly plant for the new
06:02
Two billion just on that.
06:04
Yeah, just for that.
06:06
Yeah, design the car.
06:08
You got to design all the parts that go into it.
06:10
You got to build the parts first and before we put them all together.
06:12
So so and Wall Street wasn't excited over this.
06:18
And my my word is I love Ford's.
06:21
I love the Ford Motor Company.
06:23
I do fix the recall issue first.
06:27
You know, I've been thinking about that recall issue.
06:29
My opinion on that, say you want to buy a car, Mike, you want to buy a Ford.
06:33
You're going to buy a Ford pickup F 150, just a smile.
06:36
OK, well, for in order for you to buy that car,
06:39
you have to be helping build that car.
06:44
You get on that line.
06:45
And if they're putting in the gas tank, then you help put in the gas tank.
06:48
If they're putting in the the engine, you got to be part of putting in the engine.
06:52
Oh, dear God, why would I do that?
06:54
Well, you could eliminate some of the recalls.
06:56
Now you're responsible for what you plugged in there.
06:58
We're not responsible for it.
07:01
Well, I know what I'm thinking of.
07:03
I'm going to pay them $60,000 to let me help build a truck.
07:07
Well, maybe you maybe you get it for 40.
07:09
Oh, OK, well, that makes it makes no difference at all.
07:12
My question is him put that together.
07:16
He can't even get the audio on the air.
07:18
What are you talking about?
07:19
No, if he wants to buy the car, then he has to help build the car.
07:22
Sixty billion, six, six billion, excuse me.
07:25
How many cars do you have to sell to recoup six billion dollars?
07:31
Well, it's $30,000 a piece.
07:33
It's in the big pile.
07:33
So it's not only that, but you've got the Mustang sales over there.
07:37
You got no, no, no, no, no, no.
07:38
It's one. This six billion is for specific.
07:41
But where are they going to get the money from other?
07:43
Well, here and here. Here's the other thing.
07:45
Like I said, at the beginning of the story, marketing and PR.
07:49
That's what this is. Yeah.
07:51
Because doesn't make any sense.
07:52
Don't they don't they kind of almost rebuild a factory
07:56
when they're going to build something new or different at that factory?
08:00
Yeah, it's called it's it's the model change, the model turn.
08:03
Well, not only that, but the way that they're doing things today,
08:07
they'll say, OK, we're going to start building our Ford F-150 truck
08:11
over at this plant because right now we're building the Ford edge over here.
08:16
It's not selling as many.
08:17
So we're going to increase the capacity of the F-150.
08:20
They want to take that plan over, then turn it into something different.
08:23
They're constantly shuffling stuff around.
08:25
And each time they do that cost them billions of dollars.
08:28
And do you think maybe that's where some of the recalls come in?
08:31
Because they don't get all that final process done.
08:34
I think that the recall problem is much deeper than that.
08:38
I think that they're asking their suppliers that build the alternator
08:43
or the the rings and the pistons or a widget, whatever it is
08:48
that they assemble.
08:49
I think that they're asking them to build it as efficiently as they can.
08:54
And you sell it to me as cheap as you can.
08:57
A little bit or a little bit or and I think that that's where the where the issue
09:02
is partially anyway.
09:03
Well, I think that's a big part of it because obviously if you get something
09:07
that's not quite as good as it should be, it may not break.
09:10
That alternator may not do something, but it may cause one of the computers,
09:14
one of the many computers in the car to have a problem
09:17
because it's not getting the proper voltage or something.
09:21
Yeah, it goes downstream upstream.
09:26
Let's do the recalls, shall we?
09:27
While we're on the subject, JLR Jeep Land Rover.
09:31
OK, I'm sorry, Jaguar Land Rover is recalling 121,509 Range Rover
09:37
and Range Rover Sports in the U.S., because of potential cracks
09:40
in the vehicle's front suspension upper knuckle joints.
09:44
The recall impacts certain vehicles from 2014 to 2017.
09:48
And all recall vehicles are expected to have the defect in impacted vehicle.
09:53
A crack may develop in the front suspension knuckle, potentially
09:56
leading to a detachment of the upper suspension arm, resulting
10:00
in a loss of driver control and an increased risk of crash.
10:04
And of course, Ford recalling 103,174,000 point one F one
10:10
fifties in the U.S.
10:11
Because of faulty rear axle hub bolts that may break and cause corrosion.
10:16
NHTSA said August 8 about one percent of the recall vehicles
10:20
from 23 to 25 model years are expected to have the defect.
10:24
The brake can lead to corrosion between the hub splines and the axle shaft splines.
10:29
Over time, the corrosion can lead to a vehicle
10:31
rollaway when the parking brake is not used and a loss of motive power.
10:35
In other words, you broke the rear end.
10:39
Mercedes Benz EQB, which I've never heard of, 300-formatic,
10:43
22 to 23 model years, loss of drive power.
10:51
Press the accelerator pedal and it don't go nowhere.
10:53
Martha. Martha, could you send something to find the garden lanterns?
11:00
All right. Time now for our.
11:05
Let's see what sold and how much it sold for from Heming sold car weekly roundup.
11:10
Shall we? We shall. All right.
11:12
Is everybody ready online? Everybody ready at home?
11:16
This is a 1974 AMC Javelin, which when it was brand new,
11:21
I always thought was kind of weird looking.
11:23
How much do you think that that car looks completely stock?
11:26
It looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor.
11:28
But that's a famous body style.
11:30
OK, how much AMC Javelin?
11:33
Twenty eight. Twenty eight.
11:37
Twenty four. Do we have any other bidders online?
11:42
OK, so the sole car price was seventeen thousand eight hundred and fifty dollars.
11:47
That would be a great cruise car.
11:50
Yeah, Heisman came in late at 16.
11:52
So he's. Well, he's cool. He won again, but he's on a roll.
11:56
So next up is this is for Jeff.
11:58
A nineteen eighty two Buick Riviera convertible.
12:03
How much the eighty two Buick Riviera sold for eighty two.
12:08
I'm going eight thousand dollars. Eight thousand dollars.
12:11
I was thinking twelve.
12:14
It's a convertible.
12:15
And what does Mr. Heisman join in?
12:16
And I don't know if he's looking it up on Google or something.
12:19
Well, you can't you've got it.
12:20
We can't look it up on Google and don't go to Hemmings.
12:25
Now, he's saying twenty three.
12:26
OK, well, OK, well, I say it was.
12:30
This is what it sold for.
12:31
Twelve thousand eight hundred ten dollars. Oh, you're there.
12:35
Next up. So who won that one?
12:38
Mike did. Mike did.
12:40
Next up is the nineteen seventy seven Jeep CJ.
12:47
Now, I had one that was close to that.
12:49
It's good looking little vehicle.
12:51
And it was lifted just like that.
12:52
All kinds of stuff on it.
12:54
So how much do you think of seventy seven Jeep CJ?
12:58
And this one probably had the forebanger.
13:00
It was a Pontiac forebanger, if I'm not mistaken.
13:04
How much do you think that's over nine thousand dollars?
13:07
No, I'm going to go
13:09
nineteen just as eighteen.
13:12
Heitzman says eighteen nineteen four twenty five way to go.
13:15
Mars does they're very popular.
13:17
And look at the that's in a big city someplace.
13:20
So that's not been an even an off-road vehicle.
13:24
I probably prepped this car at Richardson Chevrolet.
13:27
A nineteen seventy one Chevrolet Chevelle.
13:31
I think you did because there's still paint on the hood. OK.
13:35
There's that seventy one Chevrolet Chevelle.
13:39
Yeah, because they had to repaint it.
13:41
I buffed off the the knob on it.
13:44
Seventy one Chevy Chevelle. How much?
13:47
Got a black vinyl top look stock except for the wheels.
13:50
Yeah, they had a gold one. It was awesome.
13:52
I'm going to go twelve.
13:54
Heitzman says seventeen.
13:55
I'm going to go nineteen.
13:56
Heitzman wins seventeen thousand three hundred and twenty five today.
14:00
All right. Next up.
14:01
This is for you, Mars.
14:05
They are the Metropolitan.
14:07
I could see you driving this year.
14:08
A nineteen sixty AMC when I was in high school,
14:12
some nerdlinger in school that I went to school with
14:15
that I never found out because he was hiding.
14:18
Drove this thing to school and we all made fun of it.
14:20
Nineteen sixty AMC Metricolors. How much?
14:25
Man, I really don't know.
14:29
All right, I'll go. I'll go twelve.
14:32
Heitzman says five thousand five thousand nine hundred dollars.
14:38
What are you going to do with all these cars, man?
14:41
OK, here's one for you, Jeff.
14:43
Nineteen ninety four Acura NSX.
14:46
I knew somebody that had a problem with them is I couldn't fit.
14:51
My head hit the roof.
14:52
That was at the time that was the fastest production car made.
14:55
I'm going to go twenty seven.
14:58
Ninety four Acura NSX.
15:02
I'm going to go twenty one, maybe.
15:05
Let's see what Mr. Heitzman's got.
15:06
We should have him go first.
15:07
Oh, yeah, yeah, we should have made him go first.
15:09
He says twenty eight thousand seventy one thousand nine hundred and twenty five
15:13
dollars. I'll just put our money together.
15:15
We could have it. No, almost.
15:17
We're still. His bid, my bid, your bid.
15:22
Nineteen eighty seven Jeep Grand Wagoneer
15:26
with the stick on wood sides.
15:29
Still shipping crayon.
15:30
It looks like it's completely stock.
15:33
And I don't know as if the fog lights are stock or not.
15:37
But I think so. What year is it?
15:39
Eighty seven Jeep Grand Wagoneer.
15:41
So it probably has a small V8 in it, I would guess.
15:45
Nine thousand dollars, Jeff.
15:47
No, no, no, no, I'm going to say sixteen.
15:49
Heitzman says twenty one.
15:51
Well, Heitzman was closer.
15:52
But still it went for thirty thousand four hundred fifty dollars.
16:01
I'd buy this. Yeah.
16:02
That's so by this. Oh, you would, too.
16:04
Yeah. Nineteen ninety seven Lincoln Town Car
16:08
with the small block Ford V8 in it.
16:11
It rides like a pillow.
16:13
But look at the plate, ninety seven T car.
16:18
Heitzman, what do you bid?
16:20
You let Jeff go first.
16:22
And what do you bid, Jeff?
16:23
I'm going to bid twelve.
16:29
I'm thinking Heitzman.
16:32
I think he says twenty one on that deal.
16:34
It's sold for five thousand nine hundred dollars.
16:37
Oh, no, he's I take that back.
16:39
He said twenty two hundred.
16:40
That was his last five thousand nine hundred dollars.
16:42
Now, I have a bonus picture today
16:45
that has nothing to do with the sold car roundup.
16:47
Chevrolet displayed this car.
16:51
And this is the press room Chevrolet.
16:53
OK, today, Chevrolet gave car enthusiasts and racing fans
16:57
a glimpse of the high performance future.
16:59
Two Corvette concept cars, the Corvette CX
17:03
and the CX dot are Vision Grand Turismo.
17:08
It debuted at the quail of motorsports
17:11
gathering Monterey while not intended for production.
17:16
The pair will serve as inspiration
17:18
to inform Corvette design language for years to come.
17:21
Drawing on more than 70 years of performance innovation.
17:24
These Corvette concepts
17:25
honor the heritage of America's sports car
17:28
and propel it to the future.
17:29
So let me just say this about this concept car
17:32
as with most concept cars.
17:35
Yes, it's not a production car.
17:38
However, generally speaking,
17:40
what happens at a big manufacturing company like Chevrolet,
17:45
they will take elements of this and put it into the C nine Corvette
17:51
that we don't know anything about yet.
17:53
But it clearly is a mid engine.
17:56
Right. Because of the forward cockpit on it.
17:59
And it probably has a battery underneath it.
18:04
If it's not a full battery. Yeah.
18:07
But that is stunningly beautiful.
18:12
And I hear they're coming into the the media pool for you guys.
18:16
No, yeah, don't wish.
18:18
But you know, let me just say this to Chevrolet.
18:21
Could you please put something like this?
18:23
Bring it to the Houston auto show
18:25
and just stick it out there.
18:27
Just, you know, if you're not going to sell anything there,
18:29
you might as well have something that looks cool.
18:31
How would you like to be the guy that goes to work
18:33
and touches that every day, makes that designs it?
18:36
That would be. Yeah.
18:37
Yeah. Well, there's that.
18:39
But why why would they not build something that stunning?
18:42
Well, you know, somebody asked me that the other day.
18:44
First of all, well, absolutely.
18:47
And not only that, I don't know as if you could get it licensed.
18:51
And how would you get it over curbs?
18:53
I mean, there are a lot of different things.
18:55
Transportation safety board, all that Lamborghinis
18:58
and Ferraris and all kinds.
19:01
So then you're talking about a supercar.
19:03
Well, that's what I would put that. Yeah.
19:06
And so that would price every Corvette owner
19:09
that ever had an aspiration of buying a Corvette.
19:12
That's the one attractive thing about the Corvette
19:15
that you cannot deny.
19:16
It has always been affordable to some people.
19:19
Right. I bought one in 76 for a 77 model
19:24
and the sticker on it was $11,000.
19:26
And I paid sticker price for it.
19:28
Clearly, it's not that anymore.
19:30
But no, still. All right.

Time now for Jeff's cruise in and events calendar.
21:29
You know what's going on today up in Detroit?
21:31
The Woodward Dream Cruise is going on as we speak.
21:36
So if you're up there, have fun.
21:37
I've been to a couple of years and years ago.
21:39
They don't they have that televised.
21:41
No, no, no, not that I know of.
21:44
But it's it's it's like miles.
21:46
It's it's cities long.
21:48
Yeah, because differences.
21:50
Woodward is Woodward.
21:51
Woodward was the first concrete road in America laid down.
21:56
And now it's on Woodward, but it's also like in Ferndale.
21:59
It's in North Detroit.
22:00
They have different pockets of the city's habit.
22:03
So that's going on right now.
22:04
It's in wheel time brings you today's live television coverage
22:08
from the Woodward Street Dream Cruise.
22:11
Yeah, so it's up there.
22:11
There's no way you can cover all of it.
22:13
You just sit there with a camera and those three clowns would
22:16
sit out there and talk about each car that came by.
22:18
Well, look at that peel.
22:20
Nobody wants to buy that.
22:21
Well, why is that in there?
22:23
We could say derogatory things.
22:26
There's a lot of sponsors like we are Detroiters.
22:28
General Motors Ford Dodge.
22:30
They're all they have their pockets of of what they do for sponsorship.
22:34
They've got like you go to Dragstrip.
22:35
They've got the indoor places you can go and sit down and eat.
22:38
Well, they've got all that too.
22:39
So it's a major event up there.
22:42
Congratulations, Detroit, on having that.
22:43
I've been to a few, but it's not just today's event.
22:46
Last week, you'd be riding around Detroit
22:48
and you'd see that 68 Camaro with a son and a dad
22:52
and it toodling down the Michigan Avenue or something like that.
22:55
So you see those cars all the time in Detroit.
22:57
But because we are not there, it's just blasé to them.
23:01
They see that, you know, Torino or that Nova all the time
23:04
driving down the road for us.
23:05
It's exciting for them. It's normal.
23:07
Well, I think it's excited for every car guy across the United States.
23:10
There it was. Yeah.
23:12
But for our neck of the woods, yep, our neck of the woods next Saturday.
23:15
You got the Mustang owners Club in Austin going on.
23:17
It's a 44th annual.
23:19
So if you got time, go on up there.
23:20
It's in Georgetown, Texas.
23:22
You've got the August coffee and cars in Magnolia,
23:25
which is not far from here.
23:26
Beautiful drive up there in Magnolia.
23:28
That's on the 23rd goes from nine to noon.
23:31
Cars, coffee, all that stuff.
23:33
And of course, they've got charity events going on as well.
23:36
So take advantage of some of these things.
23:38
There's a lot going on.
23:39
Some of these are going to be winding down for the fall.
23:42
There's still going to be car clubs and all that meeting.
23:44
So stay tuned to your Facebooks
23:46
and all your your stuff going on that you socialize with.
23:49
So take care of that, but good stuff.
23:52
OK, yeah, got some more stories here
23:55
making headlines this week. You ready?
23:57
Yep. US military wants to figure out
24:00
the best way to blow up a Tesla Cybertruck.
24:04
Yeah, buddy from automotive news.
24:07
Air Force officials are seeking 33 vehicles
24:09
to use as targets for live missile fire testing in New Mexico.
24:14
According to documents posted by the U.S.
24:16
General Services Administration,
24:17
most of the vehicles can be sedans, SUVs or pickups of any brand.
24:22
But the documents specify the need for two Cybertrucks
24:26
out of concern that enemies will use the particular model
24:29
to help protect themselves in battle.
24:32
They've been found not to receive the normal
24:35
extent of damage expected upon major impact.
24:39
CEO of Tesla, Elon,
24:42
is touted the Cybertruck as bulletproof and apocalypse proof,
24:46
though an onstage demonstration during his 2019 unveiling
24:50
infamously backfired, as you well know.
24:53
Besides the Tesla's, the Air Force is planned to fire
24:56
missiles at 18 sedans, six black, six white,
25:00
six blue or green, all with sunroofs,
25:03
five pickups, five SUVs and three cab over
25:06
commercial vehicles known as bongo trucks.
25:08
Right. I thought that was an interesting story.
25:10
I used to have a set of bongos.
25:12
Can you still play the bongo?
25:14
Oh, yeah, absolutely.
25:15
Vehicles from the 2026 Bottle Year
25:18
are arriving in showrooms,
25:21
driving average transaction prices up,
25:24
pushing August incentives generally higher on older stock.
25:28
Many automakers continue to offer generous
25:30
finance terms as low as 0% to draw eligible buyers
25:34
facing higher borrowing costs and interest rates,
25:36
according to the latest incentives from S&P Global Mobility.
25:40
Automakers also dangling deals and promotions
25:43
offer often deferring monthly and down payments to counter
25:47
consumer fears that prices will rise in the wake of U.S.
25:50
tariffs on light vehicle imports.
25:53
So if you're in the market for a vehicle,
25:55
don't discount a 24 or a 25 model
25:59
right? Because, oh, well, that's not the latest greatest.
26:04
Yeah, I mean, if you were driving a 10 year old vehicle
26:07
and moving up, you wouldn't know the difference between a 24 and 25
26:10
with the technology. That's correct.
26:12
Consumers might be having more success getting approved
26:15
for auto loans based on second quarter data
26:17
from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York,
26:20
which could be fortuitous as separate second quarter study
26:23
by lender Santander Consumer USA
26:26
found a bump in demand for vehicles
26:28
likely at least partially driven by fears of this tariffs.
26:32
Again, last year had been the worst on record for consumers
26:35
seeking auto loans according to full year 2024 data
26:39
from the New York Fed, which polls Americans quarterly.
26:42
Bank second quarter study in June found 6.7% of applicants
26:47
had been turned down for an auto loan during the previous 12
26:49
months. I didn't know that.
26:54
I'm going to try to squeeze this in. Go for it.
26:57
In Oklahoma City dealerships insurers disputing any obligation
27:01
to defend a former employee who was involved in a crash
27:04
while using a company vehicle for personal purposes.
27:06
Federated service insurance wants a federal court to rule
27:09
whether it has a duty to defend and indemnify
27:13
Aaron Cantrell who worked for or Nissan
27:16
at the time of the February 21st
27:18
multi vehicle crash, according to the complaint.
27:21
Father sued her and the dealership on behalf
27:25
of the children that were involved in the wreck.
27:27
The suit alleged she was traveling at an unsafe rate of
27:29
speed for conditions and could not stop in time.
27:33
Wrecked the key of the car injuring two people in the crash.
27:37
So if you're a car dealership,
27:39
might want to check out who's driving your company cars.
