Paul, you're first up.

Yes, sir.

How can I help?

How you doing, Ron?

Good, sir.

What's going on?

92 Toyota Tracell, a three-speed auto with drive two

and low, 137,000 miles on it.

It's been kept after pretty well.

Fluid seven chains, brake fluid and anti-freeze.

Right.

Which engine, Paul?

It's a 1500 electronic fuel injection for soldiers.

Right, it's the single cam 1.5.

Correct.

Right, okay.

And what's wrong with it?

Well, it starts well, it runs well.

But every once in a while, I'll come up with a stop sign

or traffic light and sit there for a moment,

wait for the light to change.

And sometimes I step on the gas, it starts to stumble.

And if I further the gas pedal, it'll catch

and I can go, but sometimes it'll stall.

Okay.

And I have to crank it over two or three times

for about 15 seconds each time and it'll start

and I'll feather it to clear it out

and I'll drive around for a while.

So it starts to flood, in a sense.

It's like as if you were driving a carburetor vehicle

it flooded out.

Well, it has that feeling, yeah.

Right, okay.

So if I feather the pedal,

when it seems like it's gonna do it.

You can get it to not do it.

Right, okay.

So what sort of parts have you thrown at it?

Anything?

Related to the performance of it,

a lot of parts went into it,

but nothing as far as engine sensors.

All right.

The closest thing I did to anything with the engine

about five, six weeks ago,

I put a new distributor cap and wires in it.

All right, when you were inside the distributor

and I'm sure you would have said something

if you saw it, was there any oil inside

the distributor?

No.

Really?

Wow.

You've got the one, don't let that car go.

Don't tell Toyota you have that.

I'm gonna hold on to it.

Yeah, by now that inner shaft seal would have been,

and that thing would have been spritz and oil inside

the distributor all over the place.

So yeah, good for you.

It sounds more, and I hate to say it sounds like

because that becomes it feels like

and that becomes we haven't tested anything.

But it sounds like we've got more of an acceleration

in a flat spot, lack of fuel issue than ignition.

I could give you the long-winded answer

that gee, I'd love to hook a lab scope up to this thing

and take it for a ride and look at ignition primary

and do I see it cutting out and so forth.

What signals do I see that are good

so I can tell you what's bad?

Always look for what's good, right?

Instead of looking for what's bad,

looking for what's bad takes a while.

But because we've got limited time

and I wanna get on to the other 47 calls

Tom has this hour and not get yelled at.

Could we have, I just wanna plant some seeds.

Could we have a dirty throttle body?

Could we have a faulty intermittent throttle position

sensor switch?

Because I believe in 92 it was a combination

of switch and sensor where it had, I believe in 92

and I'd have to look at a wiring diagram to verify this

that it had a, when it went to idle it was a switch.

It said, hey, we're at idle

and it had a switch that changed position

to tell the computer that so it run a different fuel strategy

and then as you accelerated there was a transition

from switch contact to sensor contact.

Not uncommon, especially something I don't wanna pick on age

but we're what, 40, 30, where are we, 32 years old?

It's seen a few wipes in its day.

So can we look at that?

But the only thing that's gonna be able to look

at that fast enough would be a lab scope.

You're not gonna see that on a digital voltometer.

So we could scope it.

We could find out if a throttle position sensor

from Toyota is still available and it's 50 bucks.

50 bucks is a cheap diagnosis

on the 30 something year old car, right?

That's number one.

Number two, have you ever done

any sort of fuel system cleaning to this vehicle?

It's been done before and I use the Berryman product

at least once a year I put it in.

Well, once a year in the tank?

Yeah.

So do that four times a year first of all.

Once a year is not enough, all right?

And then have you ever done a formal hookup to the rail

injector cleaning?

I have it done at a garage, they have done that.

Okay, and then have we looked at the intake valves

with a bore scope, just how dirty is everything?

How bad do we wanna go looking for this, right?

Because it's either we've got weak spark

or a fuel delivery issue.

You know, the fuel delivery issue could be caused

by the throttle position switch sensor, all right?

The ignition issue could be

and more likely distributor related, something internal,

faulty module, faulty pickup,

something along those lines.

So I'm trying to eliminate the easy stuff first.

I'm trying to back my way into the hard stuff.

So, you know, those are the things that I would look at

and that's the course of action I would take

because how random is this?

Is it every once in a while?

Every once in a while.

I've, last time I was out with the car,

I pulled over and I increased the idle a little bit

and it avoided it happening, but you know,

when you put in gear, you feel, you know,

the idle was a little bit...

It bangs, right.

This sounds more and more like an issue

in the area of that throttle switch

because now I'm gonna sit here and say in my mind,

if this is a switch sensor vehicle,

you may have taken it past the point

where those switch contacts are doing anything.

So in other words, to talk generic numbers, all right?

Don't hold me to this.

If at proper closed throttle,

how are you raising the idle?

Are you turning the minimum idle speed screw?

No, the cable.

Okay, you're using the cable to hold it open.

Right, bring it open a little bit.

If I've looked down the throat

and everything's clean and fried,

that's why you should be able to see it.

There's about a million things wrong

with using the cable, by the way.

Just, so there's like, you know,

I don't have time to list them all

if they gave me the rest of the year.

So let's, right, yeah, no, yeah, I get it.

Dude, I get it, 100%.

So that tells me the problem is there.

All right, I would go down to your local garage.

Do they have a scope?

Can they hook up to it?

All right, put it back to where it should be.

Now, if I had to do a seat of the pants guess,

all right, it's old enough

and everybody's kind of picked at this.

I would actually take that minimum idle stop,

turn it until the throttle plate just kisses the housing

and then crack it a quarter turn off.

Quarter.

All right, yeah, a quarter turns a good number.

All right, it doesn't have to be a lot.

You just have to get the plate off the housing.

And then I would watch the throttle position sensor.

Where's the voltage?

And you can actually do it by,

where's the voltage before, where's the voltage after?

Put the cable back to where it was,

watch the voltage on the switch,

figure out which is the signal return wire, blue wire.

Trying to remember 30 something years ago,

but yeah, sounds like blue wire, blue or yellow.

But I would look at it, okay,

so when we get it down to base voltage,

crack it a quarter turn, all right,

just enough to get the plate off the housing

and then, right, start doing a sweep test

and then if he's got a heat gun in the shop,

if he puts a little heat to that sensor,

watching it on a lab scope, can we catch the glitch?

All right.

But I would definitely be watching that throttle switch

and I would hopefully try and get something original

from Toyota, if not, go take a look

and see what standard has in their catalog.

Standard motor products.

I would trust something from them

as long as they've been around them

for what they're doing.

I know what their engineering is all about.

Standard makes it great, some great products,

by all means.

You know, this summer I changed the lower control arm

because it was kind of rushed it

where I didn't like to look at it

and fortunately Dorman, I had one for it

and I got that in the summer and put it in.

So try to keep after it.

It's been, you know, reasonably good shape for a day.

It's a better shape than I am.

Well, I'll tell you what,

let me send you out a car doctor coffee cup,

stay on the line, Tom's gonna get your info.

And we'll get, you're very welcome, sir.

We'll get that out to you

and you can sit there and look at the Toyota

at least drink coffee.

It's a great cup, it's got a great handle,

everybody loves it and it's got a runnism on it.

Well, if somebody's got to be a little funny,

I mean, and as my wife would say,

Ron, you are a little funny.

OK, Jim, how can I help you today?

Well, somebody's got to be a little funny.

OK, what I did was I removed last Saturday the seat

to replace the seat cushion.

OK.

And when I went to put the seat cushion, the seat,

when I went to put the seat back in,

the tracks that the seat bolts to,

and the tracks that bolt to the floor of the car,

don't line up.

As in forward and back, they don't line up.

So they're indexed.

So one's a little more forward than the other.

Yes, sir.

OK.

So are they tied together?

I'm trying to remember what the base looks like.

Are they individual rails?

Are they individual tracks?

Yes, they are.

There's a common motor at the front of the seat

bottom that drives both of them.

Right.

Because this is a power seat.

And if you unbolt the motor, does that allow them

to freewheel?

No.

What the motor arrangement is,

is it's kind of like what I would think of

as a torque tube.

It's like flexible straw-like things.

It goes through tubes to the gears for both tracks.

OK.

And they are using spark plug type boots,

is what they look like, that connects to the gear.

And I haven't tried pulling on that.

I don't know what the proper procedure is to disconnect,

but for sure it does not have the,

doesn't have the fixtures to connect the drill to,

which would make it easy.

Right.

So can we put one side of the seat track in the vehicle?

I don't care if it's a sob.

I don't care if it's a Cadillac.

I don't care if it's a Hudson.

Physics and mechanics don't change.

If I was in the shop and I had this problem,

I would try to put one side, one track in,

bolt it up, and then power the motor

and gently, keyword gently, G-E-N-T-L-Y.

Can I power the motor to move the seat track

and then line the other one up and let it find its index again?

Well, from what I've seen with the motor engaged,

it doesn't move the track, unfortunately.

I don't know what moves the track,

because when the motor stops, it's locked to the track.

So that's where I don't understand the whole thing.

So what is it?

So are you saying the seat base,

but the seat base, something has to move that track.

In other words, if that track is available,

can you purchase like a left side inner

and a left side outer track as individual pieces?

I don't know. I haven't tried.

Okay, that would be my first question,

because if they can, that means they can be separated

from the base, right?

From the base of the seat.

Yes, there's a procedure in Mitchell's DIY

to remove it from the base of the seat.

So it can be, yes.

Right, so if it can be removed,

that means it's got to be an indexing procedure.

Okay, not familiar with an indexing procedure.

Well, there's got to be a way, if you're telling me,

and I'm trying to understand this in my head,

I kind of remember these cars.

We haven't seen one in forever,

because they're all gone now.

But there's got to be a way to realign the tracks.

Normally, I would just put one side in,

turn the motor, have it pull against the other side,

and it should pull the one into position.

If it doesn't, then I'm going to take it apart

and re-establish.

There's got to be a way to re-initialize it.

There's got to be a way they put it together at the factory,

is what I'm trying to say.

It can't be that difficult.

I agree it can't be that difficult.

That's why I called you for other ideas,

because I haven't talked to you.

Basically, the track that is further forward,

the motor will hit a stop when it gets to the back of that track.

Okay.

So it won't move to the back of the track

that's further back.

So if we try this one of two ways,

can we put the opposite one of the one that's further back?

Can we put that one in the vehicle

and hit the motor?

Does it move that motor and line it up?

Does it move that track and line it up?

No, nothing moves the track.

The seat moves in the track,

but the track doesn't move when the motor is running.

Got it.

Okay.

Something jumped out of phase here,

and there is a procedure.

I just don't remember what's at the top of my head.

Let's take a pause here.

Tom, yeah, I know.

I get you.

So let's talk about the snowball effect.

I was going to do this after the pause.

I want to talk about when the car comes in,

and it takes you by surprise,

and I probably can't do this in the next three minutes,

but 14 Honda came into the shop this week,

and it was supposed to be an oil change and four tires.

And this is something that happens in a repair shop

where you got to jump around

because the car that came up from Philly,

I didn't get a cheese steak, by the way,

but the car came up from Philly.

It needed four tires and an oil change,

and then all of a sudden it needed inner tie rod ends.

It needed filters.

All of a sudden it needed a bunch of other service.

And there's got to be some flexibility

when you're dealing with that.

And there was.

There was definitely on the part of the customer.

They understood.

They were happy to leave it and give us the time

that we needed to properly look at the car

and do what we had to do.

But, you know, there's got to be time

on the repair shop side too

because not all shops are capable of,

or, you know, you just can't react to that.

You lay out so many hours in the course of the day,

and all of a sudden your eight-hour scheduled workload

goes to 15, and how do you adjust?

And it was just kind of something

it made me think, here's the snowball repair.

And I don't talk about that often enough too,

about how it changes the schedule

and why it's so important that when people make appointments

that they keep those appointments and stay on time.

I think more than a few times in the last two weeks

we've had phone calls about, I need to come in.

I had one woman this week call me,

can I come in at lunchtime to have an oil change

and a flat tire repair?

And I explained that, well, we're by appointment.

And she was absolutely shocked to hear

that we work by appointments.

And I didn't understand that.

I basically asked her what she did for a living

and she told me, and I said, well,

do you work by appointment?

And she said, yeah.

And I said, well, repair shop's no different.

And I think that if you're not managing your time

and taking things on an appointment basis,

I think you're wrong.

I think you're creating chaos

and maybe some of us like living in chaos.

I don't know.

But in any event, the snowball effect is real.

We were able to get the Honda out the door

after two extra days and get the car back

to Philadelphia safely.

And I'm proud to say that one of the things we did,

because we always do this,

I think one of the ways to thank a customer

for patients like that and for taking the time

to trust us and allow us to do our job.

You know, it's a simple thing.

It's the key fob battery,

the battery in the key fob, I should say.

And part of the reason, a young lady was driving it

and we wanted to be able to get in the car quickly

should she have to.

The little things count.

So, I just wanted to talk to you.

I've got a 1995 Dodge.

It's a three-quarter ton.

Right.

It's a .9 liter diesel engine.

Okay.

Yeah.

I've had an assault in it.

And what I'm experiencing is motorcycles in and out.

Say that again, Jeff.

Back up about two sentences.

You were breaking up.

I'm sorry.

Let me remove you.

I'll take you off speakerphone.

Okay.

So, my 1995 Dodge with the 5.9 liter diesel.

Okay.

It's got low miles.

I think 165,000 miles.

I just baby it.

Right.

But the torque converter cycles in and out of lock.

So it locks and unlocks about 55 miles an hour.

And it drives me nuts.

I know I've taken it into the shop where they installed

the transmission.

I don't believe it has anything to do with Eddie.

He told me the owner of the shop that it was more of an electrical issue.

So I went ahead and I kind of read some forums online and they suggested that I buy a noise

isolation wire and find the pin for the lock and unlock wire.

So they gave you the directions.

I followed them, installed the noise isolation wire to a decent ground.

But it's still cycling in and out of lock and unlock.

Okay.

So I guess I love the truck.

I just don't drive it because I don't like it doing that.

Right.

So the input, part of the input for converter lock and unlock on most vehicles is one of

two places, brake light switch.

If you put brake lights on every step on the brake pedal, the brake lights come on.

Most vehicles will turn off the converter.

All right.

So, and I always just some quick simple things I do.

I'll take a vehicle out for a ride.

Take a scan tool.

I'll step on the brakes.

I'll bring up a brake light pit.

I'll bring up converter lock and I'll look to see is it doesn't react that way.

If it does great.

If it doesn't.

Okay.

I'll also look at wiring diagrams on this particular truck.

One of the more common things that fails or gives problems is the throttle position

sensor, the signal line.

And it requires a scope.

I want to look to see, you know, it's funny you say a noise isolation wire

because there are known issues with the sensor ground for the throttle position

sensor.

All right.

Where if there's, if there's noise on the ground leg of the throttle position

sensor signal wire, it will cause that particular problem.

It'll make the converter hunt.

Right.

It'll force it in and out.

So you can go look for that.

You'd have to locate sensor ground, make sure the sensor ground wire is

correct.

You may want to add a redundant ground to that as well and see if the

problem goes away.

Just verifying that the TPS is working correctly.

And I did install a new throttle position sensor as well.

Right.

And if you, you know, and a throttle position sensor, but if the ground is

bad, you know, doing a sensor does nothing.

All you're doing is swap apart.

Yep.

So I would say go find that, go find that ground.

And I'm not afraid on an older rusty, is it a rusty kind of vehicle?

Is it a rusty vehicle?

For lack of a way to say that, Jeff?

Yeah.

No, no.

It's, it's, it's 90% from the factory.

I mean, I, I haven't done anything to it.

It's right.

Right.

But I'm saying the undercarriage, you know, body grounds, everything's

clean, tight as was, you know, it's, how can I say this delicately?

You don't feel like you need a tetanus shot working on it.

No, that's correct.

You don't.

Okay.

All right.

Then I would, you know, I would, I wouldn't be afraid to run a

auxiliary ground right to the battery and to the engine ground and

make sure that that TPS is grounded correctly and see if that

does it for you.

If you don't have a scope and the ability to look at signal

ground.

Yeah.

In fact, I had all the negatives and the positive wires and the

batteries all changed because that was the first thing I did was I

wanted to make sure it was getting a good clean electrical.

Right.

But you're right.

So is there like a ground down by the transmission externally that I

should be looking at?

Or are you referring to the, the, the wire?

The throttle position sensor itself has its own ground wire.

Okay.

As I recall.

Again, my memory is being tested today.

A lot of older vehicles.

I think that's right.

I was reading something else about that.

I did buy an additional noise isolation wire just in case.

Right.

You're right.

I'll find that ground.

Find that ground that I would, I would add that ground.

It doesn't, you know, it doesn't hurt to have too many

grounds.

All right.

I've never, I've never run into a case where putting an

extra ground or two on a vehicle made a problem.

It usually, it usually solves a problem.

So I would do that and at least eliminate that.

And then my other question would be, you mentioned that you took

it to the trans shop that installed the trans.

Did it do it before the trans was replaced?

No.

Okay.

And I think it did before that was the, let me see.

It was the overdrive would come out.

It would, it came out of overdrive.

Right.

By itself, there's a button on the dash.

I can push to remove it from overdrive, but I always

didn't overdrive.

But it would come out of overdrive on its own.

And then it was struggling to shift from second to third.

So that's when I decided to have the trans done.

So on the chance that it's not them as a result of them

doing the trans, the other thing you may want to

consider, you know, it's funny, I started the other hour

this week talking to a gentleman about his diesel

truck in Hawaii and putting a tuner kit on it.

Here's an example of doing a tuner kit.

If it gives you the ability to program transmission

shift point and converter lockup where it kind of

makes sense if they make such a thing for that model

year and I would, I would bet they do, right?

That, you know, using a tuner kit to modify where

that converter locks on and have the ability to,

you know, sometimes they give you a separate

controls mounted on the dash to give you the

ability to shift that on and off.

And maybe that's, maybe that's, maybe that's

a direction to go as well.

Yeah.

And I, you're right.

I, I never, I haven't done anything to the motor

itself.

Right.

But that's not a bad idea.

I did not do the brake switch, which you were

talking about earlier.

Right.

And just take it for, just take it, just take it

for a ride.

Watch the tack.

Does it come out of lockup when you step on

the brake?

Keep your foot on the, keep your foot on the

gas, do your, you know, 60 miles an hour,

take your foot gently, gently tap the brake

pedal.

Don't engage the brake.

Just engage the switch.

Does it, does it, does it come out of

lockup?

And if it does, if it does, I'd want to know,

is the brake light coming on?

Oh, I see.

Well, normally, yeah, I usually, I'm not on

the brake when, when it comes off.

Right.

I'm not saying you are on the brake.

But it's just not releasing is what you're

saying.

No.

What I'm saying is, is the brake light

switch falsely activating the circuit.

Oh.

Causing the converter to hunt.

I got you.

That's what I'm talking about.

Right.

Is it, you know, I'm just trying to

look at, I'm trying to look at inputs

and outputs.

I'm trying to look for what's good.

What's the, what's the rule?

I'm going to put this on the next coffee cup,

which by the way, you're going to be

getting one of.

I'm going to put this on the next coffee

Tell me what's good.

I'll tell you what's bad.

Right.

And we'll kind of go from there.

Let's go over to Brad in Iowa,

09 Ford Fusion and some ABS problems.

Brad, you're out with the car doctor.

How can I help?

Hi, Ron.

Appreciate you taking the call here.

Thank you.

Yes, Ron.

I got a 2009 Fusion that has ABS issues.

Whenever there's an ABS event,

the car will not release the brake pedal.

It has to go.

The pedal goes clear to the floor

and the car has to come to a complete stop

at which point the brake releases.

The pedal comes back up

and you can drive on normally after that.

Now, we had the hydraulic unit replaced one time.

There might have been a recall at one time.

I have a friend, acquaintance,

that works at the local Ford dealer.

We brought it in.

It was one of those Saturday morning.

I can work on my own stuff thing,

bring it in and I'll swap it out for you kind of a thing.

That may have turned out to bite us in the rear a little bit

because the bottom line is it didn't fix the problem.

Then we came back in later through their regular shop

and they claimed in the middle of the winter

that they couldn't figure out what was causing it,

that we needed to bring it in when it was slick out

so they could try it.

Well, I got it to work during the middle of the summer,

believe it or not.

I'll tell you that story.

That was kind of funny actually, but go ahead.

I was going to say

if we disconnect the ABS hydraulic control unit

electrically, just unplug it, right?

So it doesn't work and just go out

and do a panic stop in a parking lot.

Hit the pedal as hard as you would with ABS.

Yeah.

I'd be fine with that.

You know, I mean, you know, if we did that

and you know, does the problem happen?

Yes or no?

I don't know.

I haven't tried that, but I sure will.

You know, because my question becomes, you know,

and if it does, if the problem does happen,

then I'm going to tell you

it's got nothing to do with ABS, right?

ABS is out of the equation, right?

Okay.

Because in my mind, is it I'm hitting the pedal hard

or I'm hitting the pedal hard

and creating an ABS event, which is it?

Well, it's one of these deals where, you know,

it started out like in the winter time

when it was slick out, you'd go to tap the brakes

and you'd be on a slick surface

and you'd have an ABS event.

Right.

Brakes would lock up.

The wheels would lock up and cause an ABS event

at which point then it would do exactly

what I described and it wouldn't release the brake pedal.

If you had to come to a complete stop

before it would release the brake pedal

and you'd go on about your normal driving.

This almost sounds like either the booster.

This has a brake booster on it, correct?

Oh, sure.

Oh, yeah.

This almost sounds like the booster

or the master is bound up or binding up,

not allowing the pedal to return.

Well, it feels like normal brake pedal

as long as you don't have an ABS event.

Right.

You know, I understand.

Well, well, no, we don't know

if it's based on the ABS event yet.

Get that out of your head.

Right.

Okay.

We, this, this is, is this because

are we pushing the pedal down further?

And that's, that's what I'm trying to, to disseminate.

Right.

Although you said tap the brake

and you create an ABS event

and the problem happens.

All right.

Well, the slick surface creates the ABS event.

That when you apply the brakes,

it takes less pressure to get the wheels to stop

because there's no rolling resistance there.

I mean, it just, the wheels are on a slick surface

so that it's easy to get them to stop.

Well, the minute the wheels come to a stop,

you know, you get that, you know,

well, that you get with ABS.

Right.

Well, the reason that occurs,

once that occurs, you're done.

It has to stop before it releases.

Okay.

Well, understand what ABS is doing

is it's keeping the wheels from locking up.

Right.

It's supposed to.

Yeah.

Right.

That's, that's its own ring.

The tone ring isn't turning.

So it, the sensors pick up that it isn't turning.

So.

Right.

And it starts, it starts to put the brake pedal into bypass

at the, at the control unit,

which is why I come back to,

if we unplug the control unit electrically.

Does.

I want to do that.

Yeah.

Does it occur?

And if it, if it doesn't occur,

so we know that pressing on the brake pedal hard

to get a panic four wheel stop.

All right.

Doesn't allow the problem to happen.

Then I'm going to tell you it's in the ABS unit.

That would be the only logical thing.

The other thing I could try is,

if I were to crack a bleeder.

All right.

Does that release the pedal without turning the vehicle off?

But I'd have to do that awful quick, right?

How would I get it to the lift to get it to,

which creates a problem?

Do I have a bad brake hose?

You'd have to have,

you'd have to have like a collapsed brake hose.

It's some critical juncture

because it's not that the brakes don't release.

The pedal doesn't come up, correct?

Well, no, the brakes don't release.

The wheel doesn't, the wheels are all locked up.

Right.

But, but is it that the brake pedal stays down?

Yes.

The brake pedal in the car stays down.

Yes.

Clear to the floor.

Right.

So to me, that sounds, it, it, it's, you know,

I just, I want, listen,

I want to eliminate what's good.

That's why I say disconnect the ABS.

I want to know that the booster and the master are working.

And then I've got a bad ABS hydraulic control unit,

which probably isn't available anymore.

So the whole conversations.

Yeah.

Well, this thing, this thing's been to the, to the Ford garage

and they couldn't figure it out.

Well, they say there's no problem because,

and so they were wanting me to bring it back when it was slick out.

And I'm like, man, it has been slick.

I have brought it in.

I got this to literally work during June,

the middle of June during the summer.

Right.

Because some idiot with a cell phone walked out in front of me on a street.

Right.

That really woke him up.

Right. Well, yeah.

No, I get that, Brad.

I guess my point is I'm trying to circumvent the problem.

And, you know, how can I prove what's good?

If I can prove what's good, then I'll tell you what's bad.

And if it comes back to a hydraulic control unit,

they're not available anymore.

And, you know, that's a whole nother conversation.

Hey, I want to just take a couple of minutes

and talk to you about young people in cars.

I just, are we done yet?

Okay.

I just want to talk to you a little bit

about young people in cars.

I think it's an important thing to be aware of.

And, you know, we've got responsibilities

as the elders, okay?

And I consider if you're above 30,

you're an elder, so don't duck out on me.

How do young men come into the shop this week?

Well, 19 years old, big six foot two, big kid.

And looking for a job as a mechanic,

I just graduated trade school.

And I said, yeah, I'm not hiring at the time,

but can I give you a nickel's worth of free advice?

I've been doing this a little while.

And, you know, I just want to make you aware.

And he said, sure.

I said, do you have a resume?

No.

Okay.

Can you pull your pants up?

Can you put on a clean shirt?

Can you come up with a resume?

And I said it nice.

I was kind.

I was trying to, you know, church him up a little.

And I think it's important.

So, if you're out there looking for a job,

you know, presentation's important to most shop owners.

It is to me because how you present to me

is how you're going to present to my customers

because you're representing me as the business.

And you've got to stop and consider that.

If you dress like a pirate,

you're going to be viewed as a pirate.

And you act like a pirate

and be a pirate.

So, you know, dressing counts, right?

Appearance counts.

If you're driving a vehicle,

and this also happened this week,

a young person,

Ron, get the car in shape.

My son is taking his car to Cape Cod

for Christmas holiday.

And for Christie,

she's a single mom trying to raise this young man.

And we looked the car over.

The car does not have a spare.

It's got a tire.

It's got no wheel.

And as I explained to her,

if he gets a flat,

he's got a problem.
