Welcome to the Total Car Score Podcast, bringing you the world of cars from inside the car.
01:47
And now your hosts, Carl Brower, Lauren Ficks, and Javier Mota.
01:56
Well, today I'm not inside the car because I have one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight passengers.
02:02
So we will need a big man. But I drove up with Eddie here in an electric car.
02:07
How was your impression here to come to Portillo in an electric car?
02:10
It was kind of scary, but...
02:15
Oh, the driver, me?
02:19
No, he did really well once we find out that the mileage was slowing or going too fast.
02:26
The range got a little shorter, so he slowed down in the speed, so it was good. After that, it was good.
02:33
So you're from here, Chile?
02:37
But you live in California now?
02:39
That's correct. I live in Santa Barbara, California, and I'm married with an American.
02:43
But we love Chile, so we come once a year.
02:47
So you're going to help me here because since you're local and you live in the U.S.
02:51
and I've been trying to convince Americans to come to Portillo.
02:55
Now, here we have a group that are already here, so we're going to convince others.
02:59
So we're going to go around. Everybody's going to introduce themselves.
03:03
And talk about how do you come here? Very short, like two, three minutes because we have a lot of people.
03:07
But we're going to start here with another Javier.
03:10
More important, Javier is a lawyer in New York, so you're the lawyer in New York?
03:16
Yes, I think for you to want to come to Portillo, it starts with a passion for skiing.
03:21
If you're not passionate about skiing, don't come, okay?
03:25
It's very, very different than skiing in the United States.
03:30
But this resort, particularly Portillo, is wonderful because the hotel is like an extended family.
03:37
You come here and you meet people, you see people year after year after year.
03:41
Many have become 20, 30 and more years.
03:44
So that's the beauty about Portillo.
03:46
What about the drive-up, those little turns on the beginning?
03:50
Well, it's often closed. And it was closed on Saturday when I was coming up.
03:56
So the option was either take a helicopter or wait until the next day.
03:59
So I chose to take the helicopter.
04:01
Well, Leah, who has been coming here for more than 20 years, I met her in 2002 here.
04:07
You also took the helicopter, right?
04:09
Yeah, I finally got to take the helicopter up the hill.
04:11
We got the car from Santiago to Rio Blanco.
04:15
And then Portillo arranged the helicopter.
04:18
It was really cool. You stood around, you gave the guy your name.
04:21
And he wrote everything down on a piece of paper.
04:23
There was no liability waiver. There was no nothing.
04:26
Well, you had a lawyer.
04:29
That's a passenger.
04:31
You left all your luggage behind.
04:33
You got to take a little bag with your ski clothes for the day.
04:36
And so we came up in the helicopter.
04:38
We went skiing for the day.
04:39
And by 6 o'clock, our luggage arrived by truck.
04:43
Jeff, we also met here about five, six years ago.
04:46
Before the pandemic, I think, right?
04:48
Before the pandemic.
04:49
So you found out here because of Leah?
04:52
Right. She told me.
04:53
Because you used to work together.
04:55
But how would you tell people or convince more people to come?
05:00
So the reason you fell in love with skiing is here.
05:05
This is why I fell in love with skiing.
05:07
The vibe, everything, the people around it.
05:10
The reason you fell in love with skiing is right here in Portillo.
05:14
You may have lost it somewhere else in the U.S.
05:16
But here, it's perfect.
05:18
I tell people that expectation management is your friend.
05:22
Because you cannot expect the big super gondola from the Swiss Alps or anything like that, right?
05:29
No, you can't expect all that stuff.
05:31
You're not going to get the lifts that go up and down every two seconds kind of thing.
05:34
But what you're going to get is a beautiful place.
05:39
And the lifts are fun.
05:42
And it's right here.
05:43
And it's everything you ever wanted.
05:45
It's like when you started all over again.
05:47
And you first time here, right?
05:50
I've only been here 10 hours.
05:52
And you want to go back already?
05:55
We just skied half the mountain.
05:58
Loved the experience with the restaurant and the bar.
06:00
And meeting all of you guys.
06:02
It's just like instantly family.
06:05
And you live in Colorado.
06:06
So you live in a great ski country.
06:08
We live in a great ski place.
06:09
But honestly, this could be a place we come back to every year.
06:13
It's becchio from Argentina.
06:16
In any snow this year, right?
06:21
I live in Santiago.
06:22
Oh, you live in Santiago now.
06:24
But you're from Argentina.
06:26
And I love Portillo.
06:27
What you don't know is that I learned to ski here when I was 3 years old.
06:33
So here I got in love with ski.
06:36
And since that time, I want to come to Portillo all the years.
06:42
And you're also a lawyer?
06:43
Also I am a lawyer.
06:47
Which is very different in the U.S.
06:49
In the U.S. you will be like...
06:51
I could be your secretary.
06:53
Notary just signs, papers, randomly.
06:58
Hi, I'm Marvin Howard with marvinskis.com.
07:02
I've been coming down here for about 20 years.
07:07
Leah showed me the lovely side of Portillo.
07:11
And it's not just about the skiing.
07:13
It's the family, the friendships that you build.
07:17
Coming to Portillo, you know, we get with that large aspect of large mountain and many lifts.
07:26
You don't get that here.
07:27
But at the same time, you get a really good foundation on people with the passion of skiing.
07:34
Back in 2002, the U.S. came here to train all their Olympics.
07:40
Hope polls for the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics.
07:44
And we proved that Portillo is a great training ground.
07:48
It's not uncommon to run into people like Ted Liggity, Tommy Moe, Makayla Schifrin...
07:55
Lindsay Vaughn's here.
07:56
Lindsay Vaughn's here.
07:57
I mean, this is where the pros and the true professionals come to train.
08:01
And there's a million people like me, too.
08:04
Well, they don't let him in.
08:07
But coming down here and not knowing what the conditions are, you just accept for what you get.
08:15
20 years ago, to get into the country was very difficult.
08:19
But nowadays, they have simplified it.
08:22
They have digitalized it.
08:23
And it is easy to get into the country.
08:25
So I think that if you have an old respect or an old admiration for what it took to get here,
08:34
it's a lot different nowadays.
08:36
It's easier to get into the country.
08:39
The language barrier has diminished immensely a lot of the people.
08:44
I think wine helps a lot.
08:46
Wine and whiskey helps a lot.
08:49
But, you know, my whiskey Spanish and my wine Spanish are vastly different.
08:56
But yet, everyone gets to wine.
08:58
And now we have Amy, who is also the first time here with Eric,
09:01
who just, we celebrated your honeymoon here.
09:05
It was actually very special.
09:07
I had no idea that was coming.
09:09
And I just feel so blessed and so grateful to have met all of you.
09:12
So how did you find out about this place?
09:14
Eric and I have been talking about it for a while.
09:16
So when Eric and I met, we talked about the places that we wanted to go on our honeymoon.
09:20
And this is kind of number one on our list, just because of it's somewhere we've never been before.
09:25
Yeah. And you love skiing, obviously.
09:28
And I think what I really appreciated is not only the beautiful snow
09:31
and the wonderful hotel we're staying in, but the vistas.
09:34
Like the raw beauty of Chile.
09:36
There's no words for it, truly.
09:38
So let's do a second round about cars.
09:40
So tell me, what car would you drive off that crazy hill?
09:43
Probably a Jeep next time.
09:46
Ford will drive some...
09:48
Well, you need Ford to drive for sure, especially if it's a...
09:51
I don't know much about cars, but yeah, some kind of a...
09:54
You drive a Ford Marquis in the U.S.?
09:57
That would be good here.
09:58
I have a Ford Marquis, but it's also electrical.
10:00
It's kind of scary with the call that the hills going up the crazy road.
10:05
I also have an F-150, so I think I would...
10:08
Oh, that would be better.
10:09
I think you put more skis in that.
10:12
How would you drive up here?
10:14
No question, I'll wheel drive.
10:15
That's all. I always have an all-wheel drive car, at least.
10:18
And I would not want to have to be required to use tire chains.
10:22
Do they require tire chains to come up here?
10:26
I know they're required.
10:28
But if the police stop you, the carabineros stop you, they're going to ask for it,
10:32
and you say, yeah, I have them in the back and you find them.
10:36
What about you, Lea?
10:37
I have an older Audi S4 all-wheel drive with snow tires on it.
10:42
I would love to have that here.
10:45
Manual up the hill.
10:46
Hummer. I want a Hummer.
10:49
The regular Hummer with a diesel engine.
10:51
That's the one I want.
10:52
They never made a diesel engine.
10:53
Oh, from the military.
10:55
Oh, you're talking about a serious storm, man.
10:59
It was in the military, so that's why.
11:01
How about you, Eric?
11:03
So I drive a Subaru Ascent, and in the wintertime, we have studded snow tires.
11:07
So we drive up a tree.
11:09
I wish I had that car here, because on the rental car, we had to put on snow chains
11:13
to get up to Valle Navado.
11:15
And holy cow, was that a difficult situation?
11:17
That was Saturday or the weekend on the big storm.
11:20
On Saturday, it took us five hours to get up there.
11:22
And one of the chains fell off.
11:25
And normally it only takes an hour and a half.
11:29
I like my family car, the Land Rover Defender.
11:35
So we're driving a...
11:38
Eddie and I drove in the Jaecco 6, which is parked outside.
11:42
I don't know if you saw it.
11:43
What do you like, a Defender?
11:45
Yeah, it looked like it.
11:47
I'm a fan of the Chevy Tahoe.
11:50
Lots of space for clients and for guests.
11:53
And lots of room for your ski gear.
11:56
And with its all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive technology,
11:59
it's second to none in the snow country.
12:02
And I think I know your answer, but I'd like to say it anyway.
12:06
I drive an SQ5, an Audi SQ5, and I love it.
12:09
But I would love it up here.
12:11
I would think studded tires would be very helpful if the snow falls.
12:15
I'd also want to try a Jeep Wrangler up here with studded tires.
12:17
Oh, the Jeep Wrangler.
12:18
I think that would be kind of fun.
12:19
Yeah, I think that would be fun.
12:20
Yeah, I think that would be fun.
12:23
I'll take the Audi there.
12:31
That's the vehicle you want.
12:33
So, Eddie, let's, I mean, again, you've been from Chile.
12:35
What else can people do here in Chile?
12:37
Because this is just one of, I don't know,
12:40
thousands of places that you can visit Chile, right?
12:43
Chile is an open flower, if you want to say that.
12:47
And there's petals everywhere.
12:49
You can visit the mountains, the ocean, the wineries,
12:52
the back country, the glaciers, the lakes,
12:58
It's just unbelievable the different areas that you can visit.
13:02
I always say that it's like, you take California and stretch it
13:06
really long, and then you add a desert in the North
13:09
and Antarctic and Patagonia in the South.
13:12
That's what you get.
13:13
But yeah, without the politics of California.
13:19
As a tourist, you don't notice.
13:21
Yeah, I said, no, that's what I would always say,
13:23
like Jeff, Alia and Melvin, that when we come here,
13:26
we come into a bubble, right?
13:29
It's a different place, but anything you want to add,
13:33
We're getting trouble in New York.
13:35
Again, I think Portillo is a real skier's place.
13:38
There aren't any signs.
13:39
And you ski all over the world.
13:43
I'm fortunate to be able to do it.
13:45
But I understand when you come here,
13:47
you may want to ski with somebody who knows the mountain
13:50
because there's no signs at all.
13:53
And there's some treacherous areas that you want to avoid.
13:56
Okay, let's go quickly about that.
13:57
What things that people will be surprised about?
14:00
The lake run is one of them, the first one off the bat,
14:03
because you don't realize how difficult it is to get back.
14:07
Getting down is not a problem.
14:09
Getting out of there is a problem.
14:10
And you as a lawyer are going to ask you too.
14:13
It's not a little strange.
14:14
Like, that would not fly in the U.S.
14:19
There would be signs everywhere.
14:21
There would be warning signs.
14:23
And I don't think they would be able to make
14:27
something like that in the U.S.
14:29
They wouldn't be able to make something like that in the U.S.
14:33
So what about, what did you explain,
14:34
rokayaca and caracara and bizcacha?
14:36
So you, Jeff, both of you.
14:41
So they have this thing here.
14:43
And lots of couloirs.
14:44
And a lot of vert above the ski area.
14:46
So they put in these things that pull you up the mountain.
14:50
They're called slingshots.
14:52
They're designed by Poma.
14:59
Either four or five at a time.
15:00
And you stand shoulder to shoulder.
15:02
And it hauls you up the mountain at a stupid speed.
15:08
And if you're with a snowboarder, good luck.
15:10
And when you get to the top, it stops with a jerk.
15:13
And you'll have to figure out how to get off.
15:15
So your backwards, like 37 degrees.
15:17
You're facing up the hill at 37 degree angle on rokayac.
15:20
And you also get off one by one.
15:22
And it's crazy as I'll get out.
15:24
Have we been knocked you off of that one, Jeff?
15:27
Somebody has knocked you off of that one.
15:31
Yeah, if people aren't careful,
15:32
they'll ski over the back of your skis
15:33
and then you fall on your ass.
15:35
And then you tumble down the hill
15:36
and you look like an idiot.
15:37
But other than that, it's good.
15:39
You're the first time here,
15:40
so you haven't seen anything bad yet, I guess, right?
15:43
Yeah, but they got away
15:44
to have you here to show us how to do it.
15:46
Because we had no idea.
15:51
Something that maybe people will be aware of.
15:54
Well, I mean, the thing that coming here for years
15:59
and skiing at Baidina Bado
16:01
and skiing here that you have to get used to
16:03
is the steepness of the terrain
16:05
and the largeness of the terrain.
16:09
When you get here, you look
16:12
and it doesn't seem too intimidating,
16:14
but you get on one of the slingshots
16:16
slash palmas and you start going up
16:19
and you realize, okay, this is real terrain,
16:24
I might be in trouble.
16:26
And then to get off,
16:27
you literally have to have the ability
16:29
to slide backwards about 10 yards
16:32
and land on your skis.
16:36
and then get your skis into the ball line.
16:38
So, I mean, it's not for the pain of heart,
16:41
but it's definitely an area
16:45
that requires a certain skill set
16:47
that you'll develop when you're done.
16:50
You've been skiing here since you were two years old.
16:52
Anything that you don't like about this place?
16:55
I'm in love with this place.
16:59
I can't be objective.
17:03
Did you like the wine tonight?
17:06
Maybe you're also new here,
17:08
but you haven't seen anything that you don't like yet?
17:11
No, I was a little intimidated
17:13
the first couple of runs
17:14
because the pitch was a little scary,
17:16
but once you get used to it,
17:20
because I have to pay attention to skiing,
17:21
but all I want to do is look around at the scenery.
17:24
Well, thank you very much everybody
17:26
for being part of this group
17:28
and this conversation.
17:29
I think it was fun.
17:30
Maybe we can do it again sometime next year.
17:34
We can do another week.
17:35
We can do another week.
17:38
I would like to say that
17:39
if you could imagine
17:40
being able to drive
17:42
to the lower saddle of the Grand Teton
17:45
and have a lodge and ski from there,
17:48
it would be the equivalent of skiing
17:53
Well, good luck tomorrow
17:55
or going back to New York,
17:57
I'll see you next year
17:58
and here in Portillo.
17:59
And one more thing,
18:00
there's not just skiing here.
18:02
Chile is a vibrant country
18:03
with a lot of terrain.
18:05
It's 3,000 miles from tip to tail
18:07
and it has every kind of geology
18:09
and geography and parks
18:12
and don't just come to the ski
18:14
and come follow the country
18:15
and visit the rest of it.
