Hello and welcome to Behind the Glass, your weekly automotive podcast hosted by two rather uninformed enthusiasts. I'm Sam from the YouTube channel SeemToGlass.
I'm Tony from Gravelwood Castells and you can watch us each week. We hope you enjoy the episode.
Well, we didn't mean to have this long a break, did we? No. We were like, see you guys in a few weeks and four months later, we're back.
Did we tell the truth from what really happened or? No. No.
But we did warn you that it was going to be a slow-ish start to the year. This is actually across the board on all my channels because, once again, there's so much going on behind the scenes.
I'm just taking a while to kind of ramp up the content output, but that's fine. I'm okay with that. Good. You know what? 10 plus years being on social media, I've allowed myself to not stress about the algorithm.
Okay, that's fine because the people are fuming, mate. I know. I'm really stressed about the algorithm. I'm stressed about the people because people are furious.
So we're sorry. At some point, we will get back to our weekly episodes. I do apologize. It's probably quite unacceptable to you. You know some of the comments I see, which are like, what are you actually doing with your life?
You're a content creator. I am working and it will all pay off because some of the stuff that we're working on and planning is quite exciting and will be quite major because I thought this year, do it right, do it properly.
Quality, not quantity. There we go. And of course, on top of that, we're planning tours because we're doing three tours this year.
On the road in the first one, around the corner in April, a penitivo tour, which is looking great. I think we've already signed up to that and we're going next week on our recce.
Should we talk about the car we're taking? Preemptively talk about it because we're going to do an episode on the road next week during the recce.
In the car that we're taking?
I don't know what to do in the car because every time we do an episode in the car, people rage. So we might do it in the hotel one evening.
But we can have a beer.
Oh, that'll get Larry way too.
Because we've done that before, didn't we?
We have done that.
Got drunk since some outlandish things.
But yeah, we're going to go off and do a recce in. Now bear with me here.
There we go.
The Mercedes. Oh, is it the Mercedes?
It is a Mercedes.
Mercedes AMG GT-E Performance.
I know.
AMG GT 63 Formatic Plus E Performance.
The fast one?
I don't know.
Is that the fast one?
Well, yeah, there's so many of them now.
So you have the AMG GT 43, AMG GT 55, AMG GT 63, AMG GT 63 Pro and the AMG GT 63 E Performance.
My question to you because this is all I want to know.
I don't know anything else but anything else.
What is the equivalent of that new car to the AMG GT-R?
The old AMG GT-R.
Which one is it, mate?
I don't know, but I'm assuming the GT Pro.
Right.
Because that's the racier one.
The one I actually wanted.
Actually, to be fair, I say that's the one I wanted.
That's throwing Mercedes UK Prestige under the bus.
The E Performance is going to be more appropriate for our trip.
Because essentially I think of this as Mercedes or AMG directly going after the Turbo S.
Fine.
This is a side-by-side Turbo S competitor for what we're going to be doing next week.
Perfect.
New Turbo S, not my current Turbo S.
No, because it's a hybrid.
Fine.
So it's the new Turbo S.
New Turbo S.
I think we're talking 800 odd horsepower.
800 odd newton meters of torque.
F1 derived hybridization.
Four seats.
Four wheel drive.
A lot of weight.
A lot of money.
Yeah, so I think the one we're driving is 200 grand.
What?
Yes, or there are thereabouts.
But that is the money now.
I mean, you forget, mate.
I know it's not a direct competitor.
But you remember that old AMG GTR that I had?
Yes.
That was 160 grand in 2018.
The thing is, I don't know why it feels like externally, not looking at sales numbers,
that new AMG GT has missed the mark a little bit.
Why?
Because do you not feel like the previous shape was so successful, so popular?
A car that loads of people loved.
Love the idea of people went out and bought whether it was new or used great value on the used market.
You had loads of them.
Loads of them.
Various different versions.
Paul Wallace had various different versions.
I wanted one when it launched.
It was an iconic Formula One safety car.
Just, you know, did a lot of good for market AMG.
This new one, I barely see them around.
There's not much chat, at least in the circles that I run in about them.
I don't know, just by making it heavier, more usable, four seats for all-wheel drive.
I feel like it's not actually the direction people wanted that car to go in.
Am I wrong?
It all depends on what it competes with.
If that big fast thing that we're going in next week competes with what you say it does,
I would put that more in line with the Bentley as well.
That's a good point, very good point.
I always think a luxurious Mercedes is more towards a Bentley customer than a Porsche customer.
Because a Porsche is way more dialed in, essentially, compared to most Mercs, to be fair.
Apart from the AMG GT-R or the AMG Pro.
Previous generation, yeah.
But the AMG GT, the standard GT, always used to look at that car and think,
well, that's a good value for Mully Bentley, that car.
Because it was nice and compliant.
I think the reason why we don't see their mother cars anymore is just the value difference, the price difference, mate.
They're too expensive for what they are.
I don't think they're too expensive for what they are, because you can say that about most cars nowadays.
Like, everything's too expensive for what they are.
Mercedes have always been a premium, expensive brand.
But I just think, in general, like, it's expensive, 200 grand for a...
But it's like the Roma, the Bentley, the Turbo S.
I mean, it's in line with the pricing of all the other cars that it's competing with.
Well, I would take the Roma out, mate, because you're talking about base price,
but no one buys a base price Roma.
The Roma is like...
220 spec.
Try nearly 300.
No, mate, no one's spending 300 grand on a Roma.
Are you joking?
No one's spending 300 grand on a Roma.
I bet a high spec to Malfi's 300,000 quid.
And the Malfi, sure.
Well, that's what it competes with now.
Good point, because I forgot that Malfi's from Malfi's for Roma.
But just, like, you bought that black car.
How much was that, Liv?
250 list that car was.
And that was a shit spec.
No, it wasn't.
I had literally every option on it.
Well, there you go. So, it's 250.
Boom.
But with a normal...
I've done you.
Sorry, let me just go...
No, no, no, no.
I'm sorry.
Because I literally...
I literally in that moment just got you.
That doesn't ever happen.
So, let me just have a moment where I just got you.
Because we're talking about the Malfi.
Yes, good point.
Malfi's 300.
It's out on that Merc at 200.
That'll be all done.
Yeah, because we're getting a pressed car,
which will be well-specced.
And good luck getting a really lovely spec Turbo S for 200.
No chance.
Yeah, again, especially when she started going Larry on that.
So, the Merc's good value for money now.
A Bentley's nearly 300 grand.
So, now we've gone through it, actually.
It's bloody good value for money.
So, why aren't people buying it?
Because it's just expensive, 200 grand on a car.
Yeah.
Yes, and when you're in that realm,
getting the Merc may feel a little bit,
not disappointing,
but if you're spending 200 grand on a sports GT car,
maybe you want something with a bit more of a sports GT badge.
Does that make sense?
Do you know what I mean?
Because, okay, yes, it's the flagship AMG
underneath the Project One,
but it is still just a Merc.
You're taking your car into servicing
against the diesel A-class.
Yeah, well, they don't do diesel A-class.
She's had a touchdown.
She's had a touchdown.
Do you know what I mean?
But a petrol hybrid A-class.
Yes, thank you so much.
On electric EQA.
There we go, fantastic.
You hit the nail on the head.
I don't know, I'm intrigued.
I have actually driven the standard 63 variant.
I had that last year for a few days
to make any content on it.
I had the SL, which I loved.
The SL.
I have a chance to experience it.
Hence why I don't make much content.
Love the S63E.
Whatever it's called.
That's the one we recorded the podcast in,
which we could have lived in.
I'm quite excited.
I think we should reserve.
Reserve.
Judgment.
Until next week.
Until we've been in the bloody thing.
I am very glad that I have invited you along with me,
because you are theoretically a customer
for the AMG GT in general.
A lairy one, yeah.
Yes, I mean, you had many of them.
So that's what I mean.
I want you to see what the thing is about.
Yeah, but I bought one with semi-slick tyres
on occasion, all that nonsense.
I don't want one with all that lever and all that weight.
But I do own a Turbo S.
You do.
So it'll be interesting to see the comparison.
Very interesting.
So watch the space episode and content coming soon.
Well, speaking of content,
I had an interesting and sort of different kind of video
go live on Saturday.
Hashtag me.
Well, not really.
But that was kind of like one of the final,
like, you know, planning piece contents.
You know, that was kind of the one that was
now I can get up.
But in it, I had borrowed the
Ford Ranger Raptor from Mount Tune.
And last week you came with me to go and collect that truck.
Yeah, I did.
And we had a tour.
We had a bloody good tour as well.
That was so nice.
And we said on the day it's been a while since you have
been sort of hosted.
Wind and Diner.
Sam and Tony from behind the glass.
Hello.
Would you like us to sign your cap?
There's just one thing they didn't do quite right.
There was no carpet for us.
No red carpet.
And paparazzi.
No paparazzi.
We didn't tell anyone though, man.
Because there would have been two people there if there was.
Anyway, really cool setup.
If you don't know about Mount Tune,
because actually I think we didn't know
about it.
Obviously I've sold a lot of Mount Tune cars over the years,
you know, hot hatches and stuff,
which is what I was really familiar with what they did.
But you know what you're reminding me of?
And I never really think of this stuff until I leave,
normally.
Because I'm like my mouth's three seconds out of my brain.
That's the problem.
True that.
Yeah, I don't really think of stuff.
And then when I actually redo what we've done,
you know, it reminded me of.
It reminded me of like the catering factory.
Like very light in-house,
bit like what Lotus used to be.
Sort of, yeah.
It had a family business feel.
Yeah, proud to be British.
Like you walk in there,
like it's just British engineering.
What we should be proud of.
Unbelievably impressive though.
Because like you, obviously I've seen Mount Tune badges
on Focus RS's and things like that over the years.
I guess for most people,
that's how they'll know the name.
Because they are one of the best,
one of the most iconic tuners of Fords,
amongst other things.
And to a point where they were Fords official tuner
at one stage.
But their heritage and history is actually in motorsport.
And they have built or developed engines
for some of the most iconic race cars ever.
You know, WRC cars driven by Colin McRae and people like that.
Touring cars.
They're still building development engines for race series
like the GB3, GB4 single seaters.
And we went into the engine workshop
and we were like, oh my God, this is unbelievably cool.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Well, as you say that,
the bit that probably impressed me the most
was when we went into that engine room
and they were testing a GB4 or GB3 engine.
And it's on a bench.
And we know that this happens all the while.
But when you actually see it in motion
and see it in a factory,
no matter how big or small the factory is,
it's impressive mate.
It's super impressive.
Because it's a computer that literally runs the engine up
for however long, two hours, three hours,
however long they decide to run it up for.
And every engine that goes into a car
has that running in period.
And it's bloody brilliant.
Yeah, really, really impressive.
And then you know, that room of disguise
is basically putting engine blocks together
and heritage engines that they're running in, you know,
heritage development.
It's just a really cool space.
But yeah, we were down the predominate
because I was collecting this range adapter
which they've developed.
So they're calling their M400 upgrade
or package four.
The range adapter in the UK and Europe,
shockingly, is limited to 290 horsepower.
Really slow.
I had no idea.
It's all emissions related.
But we loved that truck.
We did.
We experienced it for the first time with
good old legend Dan Bowden from Australia.
Shout out Dan if you're still listening.
We loved Dan.
So just to give a bit of storytelling segue here,
during our Australia tour a few years ago,
we were connected with Dan Bowden from Bowden's own,
who are a car cleaning company.
That's sort of underselling them.
Like AutoGlim in the UK.
Yeah, exactly.
Do a whole range of products.
But he is a character to say the least
about our time then.
We ended up driving his 2.7 RS
and his 3 RS 4 litre.
Unbelievable on a rainy day when a huge bug
is just like an absolute legend.
But the first night we got there, he said,
let's go into town and grab some dinner.
And we all jumped into his range adapter
and I literally looked at you and I was like,
I need one of these.
Because he had the full-blooded 400 horsepower variant.
I remember before we got there,
we were both very nervous
about staying in his house.
We'd never met this guy.
You said, mate,
I don't know what to expect here.
But he was instantly,
as soon as we met him,
he made us feel so welcome.
The nicest guy.
I actually miss him.
Yeah, we had 24 hours with him when he was great.
But the range adapter got into my bloodstream there.
And I've always kept something,
but I just had no idea that here in the UK
and in most of Europe,
they're just running so concentrated on power.
So mountain, yeah,
figured out how to unleash the 400 horsepower
and actually even a little bit more torque
than they get in the rest of the world.
I actually get the 400 horsepower.
As in they unlock it through a tune,
not a chip tune, that's what you were talking about.
Through an upgrade.
It's a plug-in and play device.
It literally gets a little yellow box,
plug into the OBD reader,
got an app on your phone, boom, boom, boom,
do the flash and it's updated.
It literally takes like,
we were sitting in the car whilst they did it.
I know that, but the audience weren't.
So that's why I'm asking.
Thank you for queuing me up.
Yeah, so super easy and it means you can also
put it back to stock really easily too.
They offer a warranty package as well
if you want to pay a little bit extra,
they can fully warranty that.
But no, it's just really cool
and the truck was a beast.
Did you like it?
Oh my God, we've got this miserable weather
in the UK at the moment,
but everyone's like that large with that much power.
You just run over them.
Sorry, I'm coming.
But it's cool and I just felt manly,
felt manly driving around.
It's probably the only vehicle
or one of the only vehicles
that you don't worry about potholes
because obviously this time of year
like every road you go down,
especially country roads, there's bloody potholes
and at the moment because it doesn't stop raining,
they're filled with water.
So you don't actually know if they're pothole at all.
Which is dangerous.
There's what's called a ravine.
I've come through it.
So yeah, huge thanks to Manchin for that.
If you're interested, I think their upgrade is 899 quid.
I'll put a link to it below.
I'll say they all fall in addition to that warranty
if you're interested.
And just like an amazing setup.
And because of their heritage and history in motor sports,
everything is built to like a really high standard.
We saw some of the development cars, didn't we?
Which are like 500 horsepower folks.
600 horsepower folks.
So yeah, just mad stuff.
Really cool.
And we enjoyed going down and being widened.
Again soon with BMW.
Are we?
Because we're off to the IX3 UK Drive.
Do you know what?
I'm...
This is the most excited I am about an electric car.
Or a new car in general?
No, no, no.
Don't go too far, mate.
We'll pass out.
No, no, electric car.
Because there's such good hype
and all my mates at BMW
that have already seen the car.
You know, they've been telling me bits and pieces.
So I'm actually looking forward to...
Well, because we've been talking about it
basically since it was unveiled,
they have invited us to go and check it out.
We're going to spend a whole day and speak to engineers
and do all this kind of stuff.
Can we be like geeks?
We're going to be geeks, mate.
Have you got any...
They've got any BMWs in stock at the moment?
Yeah, just turn up a bit.
Yeah, one series.
What is that thing?
It's lovely.
75 plate thing.
Yeah, I've got an old-shape one.
We can't go in that way.
Because I want to go in the Range Rover.
How much is the one you've got in?
20 grand, a bit more.
What year?
19 plate.
It's the shape that you've had.
What engine?
Diesel one.
Can we take it, please?
Really?
What's the new way and diesel was the old way?
But bear with me here.
If you're listening from BMW UK,
just skip the podcast for a moment.
Because there is an argument
over a new exciting EV product.
Yes, we're all very hyped about,
but actually it's still going to be 60-odd grand
and for 20-odd from Gravelwood car sales,
could you get a diesel that does...
Double the miles, has all the kit,
still very nice to drive.
Do you see what I'm getting to?
That's why I think there's maybe an angle there.
Is there?
IX3 versus 20 grand X3.
Maybe.
I'll think about it.
Anyway, since we've been off the air,
quite a lot has happened,
because it has been four years.
So a few things that we wanted to touch on.
Firstly, we've discussed it offline,
but let's discuss it online.
The interior reveal of the Ferrari Luce.
Yeah.
Oh, that silly clip that we got.
The electric Ferrari, which is coming.
I think in May they've said full reveal.
Correct.
But they revealed the interior design language.
What do we think?
Well, I know what you think,
but I'm asking for the audience's benefit.
Yeah, fine.
Tell us what your thoughts were.
I think it's genius, if I'm honest.
Mainly because nowadays,
cars are all haptic and touch screens
and no buttons.
And obviously,
Ferrari making
an electric car
is not ideal for petroids.
When you look at Enzo Ferrari's
catchphrase of,
I don't sell cars, I sell engines.
Well, not anymore, you don't.
Sell batteries.
So what the engineers have obviously thought of is that,
are we going to bloody sell these cars?
Because ultimately that's what they've got to do.
They've got to try and sell them.
So I know what we do.
We'll make it look like a retro
60s.
And we've seen this mate with the Fiat 500,
the Beetle.
The Renault 5s.
Lots of these cars that were old
hat in the 60s and the 70s.
They've now come back as modern electric cars,
essentially.
And I think Ferrari have jumped on that bandwagon.
I'm sure we've spoken about it before.
It feels like
all these manufacturers are going to have to lean on their
heritage moving forward because
cars are becoming fundamentally
more and more similar.
They're the same.
Yeah, across the board they're driving cars,
everything's accessible, easy to use,
same technology, Apple CarPlay.
They can be a good boot.
Across the board, whether it's electric or hybrid,
there's less and less identifiable characteristics
about these cars.
Yeah, they've been making,
like, when you even look at, like, hot hatches.
So if you look at a Golf R, an S3,
an A35 Mercedes, the BMW M1 M135,
they're all 300 horsepower, electronic four-wheel drive.
They're all the same.
All does the same thing.
They're all the same.
So apart from being attractive.
Just the badge.
The badge, the brand, always in their heritage design.
What else has got to go on?
So I'm with you.
Well, let's go and see what the actual car is.
Well, I won't buy one.
What do you think it's going to be, by the way?
A tumble dryer.
No, apart from that.
But do you think it's going to be a sports coupé?
Caprioli?
What do I think it's going to be?
It can't be a supercar.
I think, like...
Why not?
Well, because they're struggling as it is.
Mate, they can't sell the...
Who buys the hybrid cars and the...
I don't really don't like talking Ferrari down because I...
Still want to get invited to the press launches?
No, because I...
It's up there with one of my favourite brands.
But hand on heart,
there is not a new Ferrari I would go and buy today.
Really?
Right now.
Doddard should chill injury.
No, mate. Why not?
Because I wouldn't.
Exactly, I'd buy A12.
And that and that and that.
Really?
If somebody offered you a slot in a 296 speciale.
Well, I was offered a slot.
Were you?
We didn't have that conversation.
We did.
No, no, we had it privately.
Did we?
Yes, mate.
It's just going to show how much you listen to me.
Was I eating spaghetti at the time?
Mate, I told you this story.
I went into a Ferrari dealer to look at a Roma.
We never discussed this online.
Let's discuss it now.
Maybe we did.
Very briefly.
I'm not going to name the Ferrari dealer.
I went into a Ferrari dealer to look at Roma's when I was buying my Turbo S last year.
The man never met me before in a line.
We discussed it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Never met him before in my life.
Hello, sir.
Tony, nice to meet you.
Don't look at Roma's.
Oh, it's your lucky day, sir.
Is it?
So I want to look at some Roma's.
No, no, no, sir.
We have got an opportunity of a lifetime for you.
Oh, right.
Okay, tell me.
If you buy this Roma Spider in front of us.
£283,000.
We will give you the golden ticket.
Of a 296 Speciali.
I said, I've already had 17 Ferraris.
So I'm not a new customer.
He said, it doesn't matter.
We can honour that deal for you
if you buy this car today.
Yeah, that's what he said to me.
I'm not going to put it.
I've got it in bloody email.
The golden ticket.
The car that's going to be worth
£400,000 more than the bloody, what its list was,
which is what they always say about the pistas
and they all lost a hundred grand.
You know the bit that stands out to me most about that story?
Panicking.
I've already owned 17 Ferraris.
You just have the number just there.
Well, you don't forget.
I keep reminding myself.
I can't afford one now.
But what I'm saying is that
if I was to buy another Ferrari
and I will, I need to because I really love the brand.
I just don't know what they're doing now.
Don't mean I don't love them.
I'd go back.
I probably wouldn't have another pistol, I don't think,
because I've had four of them.
I'd have an F8 probably.
I reckon I'd have an F8.
Yeah, I mean, there's still so many Ferraris
that I would love to own.
I would have a dodgy chill injury for sure.
I'd still have a Roma.
I...
The 296 thing is always like a bit of an arm and an arm for me.
I don't know if I would have a 296.
They're 190 grand now later.
I know, and then it's like, it's still not that attractive.
SF90's suddenly look great now.
I don't know.
270 or something.
I think the lies.
That 849 Testarossa thing.
Sorry.
Just a bit of a no.
I still haven't got used to the way it looks.
I didn't think any of the reviews...
The reviews were very sort of...
How do I say this?
As expected.
A Ferrari launch event.
Fantastic.
It was so good.
They've all drunk the Kool-Aid like you normally do.
Yeah.
Can I tell you, when you go back to V12s,
can I tell you the only V12 Ferrari I'd have?
500.
The competitiony.
Oh, really?
I would have a TDF as well.
Oh, yes.
Yeah, but I'd probably...
I was spoil driving that competitiony
and I still remember that car now.
That was two or three years ago I drove that car.
And it's like...
It's definitely the best...
Because to drive, it's way better than the TDF to drive.
Because the TDF is amazing, but it's terrifying.
It's terrifying.
So...
Great for all the wrong reasons.
The competitiony is a compromise where it's got TDF in it but sensible.
Do you know what I mean?
Yeah, I don't know how sensible, but you're drivable.
More drivable.
So do we think...
Are we the same in this where we would only have the special versions
of the front engine V12s,
but we would have...
We're happy enough with the standard mid-engine stuff.
No, I would have an 812.
And I nearly... Remember, mate, before...
I only got the 812 GTS.
Nearly bought an 812. Very, very, very close.
I'm just not a front engine man.
I just like a...
Yeah, probably you're right.
Yeah, slightly more lairy ones.
I'd say if I won the EuroMillions, I would still be buying
a ton of Ferraris.
And I would have...
I would have the newer cars, but...
They just don't excite me in that same way.
How did we get onto this, by the way?
We just started rambling on to what we used to do.
This is lovely.
What are we discussing?
Why did we get onto the Ferraris in general?
Oh, the luce.
The luce.
Because...
I sort of see what you're saying where...
If they come out with a two-seat electric sports car...
I don't think anyone's buying that in general.
I mean, Porsche, I think, are finally now confirming
that they're canning the electric Cayman and Boxster
as predicted by this podcast at some point.
Three years ago.
But are they actually like scrapping it?
I think the new...
Is it Michael Leiter?
Who's this gone there is the new CEO who is ex McLaren.
Very lovely chap, actually.
I spoke to him when I met him.
Yeah, well...
Because on that time...
You went to when you were sitting next to Wang Yu.
What was his name?
Wang Yang.
Not that one.
Not Yang Wang.
No, no, no.
I spoke to him a long time ago.
When I was kind of all up on the McLaren scene.
I think it was the Artura.
He had been drafted in from Ferrari.
Cayman is new CEO and was like,
I'm going to sort this ship out.
And I gave him some feedback of cars are still breaking.
Yeah, I drove something and it fell apart.
What? McLaren or Ferrari?
McLaren.
McLaren, McLaren, McLaren.
Because I'd done like a load of stuff.
And he was all there trying to like sort out all the inherent...
So he went from McLaren to Ferrari.
No, Ferrari to McLaren.
Right, he went from Ferrari to McLaren.
You then drove from McLaren and you spoke to him and said,
sort it out because it keep breaking.
Hold on a sec.
Let's forget where he was before.
Fine.
But he came in as the new CEO and it was around the time that I was doing a lot with McLaren
around the Artura, the 750S, 765 LT.
I like all the cars, but I ended up having a face to face with him somewhere
through the PR team just being like, hey,
like he'd like to chat to you and we'd like you to chat to him.
And I had driven a car.
I think a 750, I think it was the 750S Spyder to Silverstone
and the car had had issues.
I think some trim had fallen off.
I think some trim had fallen off the car.
Quality control issues.
Right.
And the PR team hated me because I told him face to face.
I think I said to his face, like, yeah, stuff is good,
but like literally the car, there's a press card that fell apart as I was driving it
and he was furious.
Well, that's why they hated you, mate, because someone's going to get sacked.
They don't want it to happen, mate.
Like the men at the top, they'll, you know, they don't, half the stuff gets hidden from them.
Yeah.
That's why he was parachuted in to sort the stuff out and then there I was.
And look, I, like my clone, I was, so I don't, I don't think I talked about it in the content
because, okay, it was a bit of trim that fell off, but I pointed it out to him.
He's a nice guy.
Anyway, he's now over at Porsche.
And I'm pretty sure something came out.
I read an article saying that they're considering scrapping the electric came in a box entirely.
Previously, it was that they were going to keep the combustion engine variants alive for the GT variants.
Okay, fine.
Anyway, soon to find out.
But I think the point being, if Ferrari did a sports car EV, I don't think, and people would be forced to buy it,
but I don't think anyone would want it.
Do you think that car is like a new, pure same way then or something like that?
It's not going to be a saloon car.
No.
Is it? It's not going to be a Panamera, sorry, a Taycan.
No.
So really it's going to be a crossover, isn't it?
It's going to be a smaller, pure same way.
You think it's going to be bigger?
Ferrari can't make an SUV, even if it's electric.
Surely they cannot come out with a Eurus, actual Eurus rival.
I think it's going to be more like the Lotus Amir.
Or, yeah, fair, maybe the...
What's that Mercedes wacky thing that George Russell set the record in?
That concept to you?
I think it'd be something like that.
I think.
A four-seat, fast-back, saloon-y crossover-type thing.
Honestly, mate, I would not be surprised if they did bring some sort of SUV out,
if I'm honest, from a money point of view.
Who's buying electric SUVs?
Well, this is Ferrari, mate.
They don't make it.
They've got to sell, because it's for the emissions,
they've got to produce and sell a certain number.
But they will sell them, because they'll make people buy them.
They'll force them to buy them.
I don't know.
It's not going to be for us, is it?
I'm intrigued, and I want to see how far are we going to do it.
But I'm not that excited, but I like the design.
And I guess it suggests to me that exterior-wise it's going to be heritage-looking as well.
It should be the right way to go.
I see, anyway.
Well, speaking of heritage and old and things like that,
I went to Retramobile in Paris whilst we were off the air,
which is my new favourite show by the way, dude.
We spoke about it briefly.
This is the Geneva Motor Show, four classics and modern classics,
three floors of a Paris convention centre,
top floor with dealers like Joe McCarrie, Simon Kiddston, Gerardo & Co.
with, you know, just the most impeccable modern...
Yeah, two of the short wheelbases.
McLaren F1 GT-Rs, Gordon Murray T-50s.
Love it.
They're amazing, amazing, amazing cars.
And then sort of other dealers from around Europe,
showing things like, you know, rare one-off Tester Rosses.
Just cool stuff.
A floor below that with sort of some manufacturer-level presence,
from Ducati to Peugeot to Volkswagen.
And then a sort of memorabilia floor with...
Just as a real enthusiast, a great way to spend a day.
Whether Geneva Motor Show was a bit more industry-feeling,
this is like punter-level.
You've never been so close to X, Y or Z.
A little bit rope and posty.
You have to kind of be invited onto some stands and stuff, which I get.
But I think even if you are just a punter who buys a ticket...
And the car's on show for sale?
All for sale.
People, I think, do big money
that's definitely different to Geneva, then,
because that was more manufacturer-based, right?
Well, it was an industry-level event.
Four journalists, really.
And then, obviously, it opened to the public after that,
as a way to go and see new cars.
And I think you could place an order at Geneva.
You could, yeah.
Yeah, we just used to go on the press days.
I wonder if that'll ever come back, that.
Because, obviously, it died after COVID,
because of the internet and whatnot.
But does it need to come back?
No, no.
You've got Goodwood, which has the fact that it's rolling.
There's movement, so they launch cars dynamically.
You've got Monterey over in the U.S.,
which is arguably the quail and things like that.
Go there.

Yeah, fine.
I mean, like, yeah, yeah, I just,
I don't think it's really...
Yeah, walking around.
It was a great way to kickstart the year.
Yeah.
Because it was always, like, February, March time or whatever.
March, April time, wasn't it?
Yeah, late February, early March.
And it was a great, like, okay, the year is beginning.
And great, we see all the cars
and great networking and blah, blah, blah.
Just fun, just like fun.
But I think now there's other events
that have taken its place.
And for me, retro, in this kind of continued
thought that for most enthusiasts,
old is gold.
But for me, retro cars from 10, 15 years ago,
plus, rather than the brand new offerings,
this is a great place to wet the appetite.
Fair.
You know, it is the best of the best
and everything is insanely expensive,
but it's a way to go like, oh,
to dream about that stuff.
Very cool.
I sort of wish there'd been a floor for
young time, as you know,
up and coming future classics
that could really be like...
2010 stuff.
Yeah, like, you know, it would be great
if there was some...
I've been all over this, by the way.
V10M5s.
Yes.
Right, okay.
This kind of scene.
Basically, I have decided...
No, no.
That I wanted to buy a car for 10 grand.
Not again.
Problem is, I don't have 10 grand,
but I'm like, maybe one day I will.
I'm working hard to gain the 10 grand.
Maybe one day, I'm not saying that.
But really, as much as I'm loving life
using the Project 8 as a daily,
now that it is a...
collector car.
Mate, you can't, by the way,
just for a bit of clarity, right?
What?
And trying to be unbiased.
You cannot sit here
telling the man on the street,
the normal consumer,
that you haven't got 10 grand
when you've got a GT3,
a Challenge to Dali
and a Project 8.
You cannot say that, mate.
I cannot justify spending 10 grand.
Okay, tell the people the truth.
You have 10 grand.
Because if you didn't, you haven't got them cars.
I cannot justify spending 10 grand.
I got too much else going on.
It seems an unnecessary thing to do.
But I...
I'm racking up miles on the Project 8.
You will be.
Racking them up.
And it doesn't make it any less special,
but I'm increasing the likelihood
because this time of year in the UK,
as you already mentioned, potholes everywhere.
And that car is stiff.
And it's just a bit ridiculous
doing the nursery run in the Project 8.
I agree.
But I had a guy,
I had one of the dads start talking to me the other day.
Oh no.
I dropped off and I thought,
I need to not bring this car here.
What, did he recognize you?
No, no, no.
He was just a car guy
and he had an RS4
so I was kind of interested.
The Freelit or the Freeport Tuesday.
What was the V6?
Yeah.
Very rare.
Extremely rare.
But at 7.30,
when I've got my daughter
singing Frozen in my face
and I haven't switched into
What's up mode yet.
Into the unknown.
I'm not really...
I don't really want to talk about cars
my day and talk about cars all day.
And so I would like to be able to do the nursery run
in a really nondescript
but secretly cool car.
Not a conversation starter, just like a nod,
a nod of approval.
So I was like, could I go and get
a Mark V Gold GTI 30 edition?
Or could I go and get
an early Cayenne turbo?
Could I go and get
something else?
An early Cayenne turbo?
Yeah, what a scene.
No, mate.
Screw L322s.
Boring. Get Cayenne, mate.
But you won't make it to the nursery
in one of them.
Nor will you in an L322,
but everyone keeps saying the boys go on the world.
Well, it depends what engine you buy.
What, same with the Cayenne?
No, mate.
I had a terrible story with one of them.
I've had a few stories with one of them.
I had one with water in Gress 1,
still haunts me now.
Yeah, I mean, it's terrible.
Have you seen Bentaygas, by the way?
Yeah, yeah.
Anyway, so like, I just sort of decided,
and I just thought it would be nice
if at Wretchenville there was a floor of,
you know, 10...
Why don't you get a 2005
Bentley Continental?
Yeah, but they're not 10 grand.
And if they are, you don't want that car.
No, because as I say,
that's not what I need to want.
I have got three unbelievable cars.
I'm very happy.
I want something for the Monday
for the nursery run,
for the drives up to a dealership to come
and see you to do a planning meeting,
whatever it might be,
that will suffer miles well.
But it's interesting enough
that I'm not literally in
Skoda Superb.
Do you know what I mean?
Like, I just need it to be...
I just need it to be interesting enough
that I like walking up to it.
It doesn't need to be fast.
It can't just be comfortable.
Like, but just, just interesting enough.
But that car, by the way,
that doesn't need to be interesting enough.
No, no, no, no, it does.
But why, mate?
Because otherwise I won't want it.
If I literally go and buy myself
a seven or eight grand,
1.4 litre Mark IV Golf,
I'm just not going to enjoy it.
It needs to either be an interesting spec
or just, I'll say, a GTI
or an Abarth
or a Mini Cooper JCW
or just something that just has enough.
I don't need a race car or sports car
but something that looks
exciting enough that I'm like,
yeah, sick, cool.
That's my car.
Do you know what I mean?
Mate, I'm not going to enjoy it, am I?
Well, it hasn't got to be a cash car, but...
Do you know what I'm getting at?
I sort of know what you mean, but like,
who cares, mate?
It's there to do a job.
Besides, it starts and stops
and it's safe and gets your daughter to school
and you can run around in it.
But for example, I'd have a Renault IV,
the new Renault IV Electric.
No, no, but as my point being,
because it's got something about it,
what I was trying to get on to say
before you rudely interrupted me.
No, mate.
You get an electric car for 10 grand?
I don't want an electric car for 10 grand,
although the Fiat Grande,
the new Fiat Grande thing,
what's it called?
You know what I mean?
I don't want an electric car for 10 grand,
but my point being,
I just want the car to be interesting.
It doesn't have to be sporty,
it doesn't have to be fast.
I just want to like it.
But you don't know what it is.
But you don't know what it is.
You've got three fantastic cars.
But you're talking about a Cayenne.
Is that interesting?
I just found one online.
I found a really nice, exclusive Cayenne Turbine.
I just like those old cars.
It's the one type of Porsche.
I haven't owned an SUV Porsche yet,
and that's ridiculous to say.
Are they 10 grand, are they?
You can get them for 10 grand quite easily.
And that's interesting enough for you.
Interestingly spec'd one, yes.
Because it's a Porsche.
There's not many other Porsches you can get.
A Boxster wouldn't make sense of my life.
No.
It's a nice time.
You are the opposite.
Firstly, I don't think you like cars in general.
No, I do, mate.
You drive vans very happily,
and that's great for you.
It just needs to get me places.
There has to be something about it.
It can be a 320D,
but if it's blue in tan,
or it's got a...
There's just something like...
You just need to like it, mate.
Like it's gone to a leasing company.
Yeah, fair enough.
I don't need that from a car
that I just bumming around in.
Maybe that's because of my job.
I just need a car to go from,
which is quite often why I'm in a van.
Because I literally don't care.
My special moment, so when I get in nice car,
even like when I get in the Range Rover,
because I don't drive that all the while.
OK, so what would you buy
for sub 10 grand
that is going to be fairly bulletproof,
fairly economical,
easy as a state.
What year?
Any bloody year.
No, it's just got to be sub 10 grand.
Under 10 grand.
Yeah, what would you get like a 20?

Wait a minute.
Under 10 grand.
So you're going to be over 100,000 miles
most likely.
Yeah, you get a leggy
330D touring
like a 2014, 2015.
But that'd be all right.
If there's been service properly.
Yeah, yeah.
Still Euro six.
Just, I think.
Euro six, so you can go to London.
What about a nice Volvo estate?
Yeah, I've been looking at some Volvos.
You can get some nice Volvos for sure.
I saw a lovely one the other day.
It was a 20-odd year old one
would have been driving through the back
with tons of petrol one.
Add his seats down.
Obviously carrying stuff around.
I just liked them.
I looked at the mini commercials
kind of cool.
Yeah.
What about the Clubman?
Yeah, I love the Clubman.
Yeah, you can get a little Clubman.
Are they reliable minis?
Again, we're talking the same year 2014.
I'm looking at most decent stuff
as 2015 as I tap out.
You can't get much good stuff
post 2015.
You get a lot of car for 10 grand.
That's the problem.
But if you're looking at quirky stuff
like that, like all the German stuff,
you are just going to get a leggy
high mileage.
You know what I mean?
There's lots of nice leggy high mileage stuff.
Of course.
But it's a problem.
You've got to start thinking about your reliability.
It's like anything.
When you start looking at older cars,
and I don't care what anyone says,
you can shout at me as much as you like.
Is it a miss whether it's going to start in the morning
or it's going to get you to exactly where you...
And there will be incidents of people going,
well, I've had my car, I've done 150,000 miles
and it still works.
Fair enough.
But there is lots and lots and lots and lots
of scenarios where that's not the case.
They will break because they're machines.
So the question is,
because the alternative is right,
you get a two year lease
on a 300 pound a month car.
You're burning the same cash,
but you're obviously not going back.
You're 10 grand in the bin.
Or you're 10 grand on a used car that might have...
You might get half back,
but then you're going to...
Don't forget the maintenance across that period of time too.
Well, you know, I mean, I wouldn't buy one,
but there's a Renault knocking around at the moment.
A little SUV Renault.
I don't know what it is.
A symbiosis or something like that.
It's bloody.
Two and a half grand deposit,
£1.99 a month.
Mad, right?
Two years, my painter's got one.
He said, I literally just give it to my wife.
It's £199 a month
for a brand new car.
Quick mouse, it's two and a half grand
across the two years,
plus the two grand he put down.
All in done.
Give the car back seven grand,
it's three and a half grand a year.
It's unbelievable for a brand new car.
He said it's weird because he said
the engine is almost like a generator.
So it almost runs on electric
and then the engine
tops up the electric battery.
That's how they do it.
It's called e-something with Renault.
But it's like, you know, you look at them
and you think bloody hell,
what a car for that money.
That's what I mean.
Is that actually for what I need
a better route to go?
Well, less interesting, but...
You bit the nail on the head
because that's what I would be doing
because I wouldn't care.
I literally wouldn't care.
He's just gonna do a job.
I haven't done a lease before.
Because you're quite tied in.
You know me and how I get bored of stuff.
You're in for two years.
So that thing of like,
you either get over your,
get it at your head that
I just want a tool
or you go down the route
and you want to go down
and you buy something for 10 grand
with a chance it's going to break.
Because that's embarrassing.
Well, it doesn't.
If I break it down on the way to nursery,
I'm in big trouble.
I'm in big trouble.
Anyway, let's wait and see.
What's been going on with your world, dude?
I went out for dinner last night.
Nice dinner I went.
For Valentine's, bit late.
I'm not going Valentine's, mate,
on a Saturday.
It's a complete waste of money.
Don't you think?
I think Valentine's Day
is just another commercial thing
to get money out of people.
Don't you think?
Yes.
Let's just sell a lot of roses.
Do we think that's probably just
quite an obvious male thing to say?
All depends on your misses, I suppose.
Yeah.
Some women are worse than I was.
Anyway, I went for a lovely dinner.
They are, yeah.
I've got great experience.
Thank God I've seen my demographic
dropped over Christmas.
Keep going.
No, no, but,
so I went for a lovely dinner.
Take the car in?
Take the car in.
Oh, I went in the little BMW.
Did you?
Yeah, because I was going to go
in the Range Rover,
but I'm petrified driving the
Range Rover into London
and leaving it on the street.
Because it's not good.
It's okay, it's cold.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Or with a smash or something, yeah.
Summit a lap at one.
I'd rather take the Porsche.
Fine.
I didn't take the Porsche.
I took the little BMW.
Because you can park it anywhere.
Yeah, yeah, of course.
Yeah, weird.
You did text me.
Did I?
Yeah.
Oh, yeah, of course.
Yeah, yeah, so I missed you.
I'm eating my dinner, having a nice
some wagyu beef.
Wagyu beef.
On a night off with the missus.
Night off, yeah.
Yeah, not working.
Literally not working,
talking about all sorts of nonsense.
Like me on the nursery run.
Yeah, yeah, just.
In a different world.
Having a completely nice time.
Switched off.
Two suits sitting next to me
that have obviously just finished
work, must have been in
finance or something.
They've piled in the satin there,
sat next to me.
I started talking about bloody cars.
Yeah.
Oh, it just gets messed from Tony.
Don't know what time of night going,
there's two guys sitting next to me
talking about an F8 and a GT3.
Yeah, so the bloke, the bloke,
one of them obviously didn't have
impressive, nice cars.
He's obviously
children and wife
and giving up on life.
And then the other bloke opposite him
was a bit younger, a bit more dynamic,
giving it a large.
And he's telling everyone, basically,
saying it's so loud across the table
that the whole restaurant had,
that he's got an F8 and a GT3.
And then he started talking about
the comparisons.
How they drive.
A little bit inside me just died.
How hard did you have to grip your
knife and fought to not join that
conversation?
Well, at one point,
my fault was going to go in his neck.
But you know, I just thought like,
it's just my luck.
I've come out for a nice time.
Just not talk about cars,
not talk about anything.
And the two bloke sitting next to him,
and by the way,
the bloke sitting opposite him,
could probably be not less interested
to hear what his mates been doing.
Sure.
Running around in the bloody
Ferrari and a Porsche, you know.
And when you say,
I've got a GT3 and the bloke opposite
you or someone opposite you,
he says,
oh, what was that one?
And then you start saying,
oh, it's got a cage in it.
And then I thought, oh, no, like,
this is where it gets embarrassing.
No, because when you've got to start
explaining to someone about
the problem with the GT3,
I really like the GT3,
but I've got to go so fast in it
to enjoy it.
And at that point,
I'm going to kill myself.
This is what you're saying.
But in the F8,
like I can drive around,
I can do 20 miles,
which is probably fair enough.
I can do 20 mile an hour,
you know, like people,
people, you know, appreciate it.
And with all the Ferrari's I had,
they normally spit at me when I drive past.
You know what I mean?
So very,
we have a completely different view on cars,
obviously, because we're car guys.
Well, overexposed as well.
Or overexposed, yeah.
But when you,
sometimes I like think it's funny
when I listen to people like,
that's why I messaged you
and thought I cannot listen to this.
Because in a roundabout way,
what he's saying was right.
Yes.
He just wound you up.
Yeah.
And he just was saying it the right way.
And I wanted to tell it.
Well, I can't believe you didn't get involved.
I can't,
firstly, I can't believe you didn't slip in my car
to an on-the-road driving tour.
But yeah, it's,
the thing is like we see him, you know,
you and I love to moan and complain.
And we often sound like bitter old twisted petrol heads.
But it's because this is what we do for our,
you know, our life.
Our whole life is cars.
And that's great because we love cars.
So it's nice,
but it just means that really 99% of our lives,
we are in and around discussing,
do something about cars.
So sometimes this is nice to detract,
but I did something a few weeks ago.
I can't believe I was like,
oh, it's going to be so nice.
It's going to have like 24 hours off cars.
Got no car gender.
What happened?
At lunch,
someone bought up a thing and they were like,
oh, I found this car online the other day that I was looking at.
And immediately I was like, show me everything.
Let's go.
I'm going to tell you what to buy.
Look at this link.
I'm going on car and classic.
I'm on collecting cars.
I'm on auto trader.
And I leashed out then I caught myself off like 25 minutes ago.
Oh yeah.
I'm just a loser.
Like I just like I'm only complaining,
but it's actually I'm so happy just now about cars.
And as well, like if you,
if you don't like cars,
like another scenario I can give you,
and I walked out the restaurant last night,
I was just pouring a rain.
My Mrs had like these stupid high heels on that she couldn't walk in.
So I walked up the road to get the car.
As I'm walking up the road,
I hear a Lamborghini noise.
Okay.
And I thought,
like if I wasn't a car guy,
I would have paid no attention to it.
So then I'm hearing the noise.
Then I'm like debating with myself in my head,
talking to myself off the hill,
thinking is that hurricane or is that a event at all?
Reven these nuts off.
And as I've walked,
it's a bloody hurricane coming down with his mate in an urus.
And they're literally rolling down the hill.
Reven the.
Hop on at night mate.
Crazy isn't it?
In the middle of Mayfair.
Crazy.
Why?
I don't know when that all became a thing,
but I mean,
each their own.
Yeah.
Each their own.
I mean,
maybe they just bought the cars,
maybe they'd rented.
Who knows.
Disrespectful.
It's mad.
It looks so horrific from the outside.
Sounds horrific.
And you just think,
what a bell.
Yeah.
But if you're in that moment
and maybe they just flown it,
like you don't know.
You don't know.
And so,
but all I will say is it looks horrific from the outside.
Yeah.
It looks and sounds.
And that's exactly what I thought.
Yes.
Oh my God.
I felt embarrassed for them.
Almost.
Yes.
But there was definitely plenty of times
when I was in the F-type
or the 540C at like,
and I was getting the last one.
I don't think I ever really sat there
revving the tits off in like,
traffic, but I would have done like a
aggressive pull.
Yeah.
An aggressive pull.
Something along those lines.
Because you went out for dinner.
Yeah.
And that's it.
No, no, no.
I've done other things mate,
but I can't remember what.
It was a long time ago.
It was a long time ago we spoke.
And like,
this time of year,
I just get my head down and do some work.
Well, I'll try and do that all year round.
But at your age, it's hard to...
Yeah mate,
I'm getting old.
I got to bed at nine o'clock.
You know what I mean?
Okay.
Well, that kind of guy
springs you up to speed.
I say,
we will be back next week
from the road
on our Recky.
Then you know what?
I've sort of feel like
we've slightly cursed ourselves
because
I've just announced
that we're taking that AMG GT.
Uh-oh.
I have supposed to have that car
on loan like,
three times before.
And every single time
I build up to it,
it gets cancelled.
Because the car gets crashed
or something like that.
Well, we'll be in something.
We'll be in a gulf.
We have to go on the Recky.
On hire?
Yeah, we're going to be on something.
So we'll be on the road then.
And then the week
after something's happening to,
why am I having my eye blank?
No, we're going BMW.
Oh yeah, BMW.
Yes, sorry.
So I think after that,
we're then doing the BMW launch.
So we can at least tell you
that you've got absents
for the weeks ahead.
May this long continue.
And sorry for the
elongated pause.
But keep subscribing
and following us wherever you are.
And we will be back with you next week.
Thanks for watching.
Bye bye. See ya.
