Nope, wonder why that is, hey ladies, maybe the guys have vehicles that never have a problem,
is that possible, let me know if your fella has car problems, yeah, maybe they're pitching
us a big hunk of baloney here, yeah, I'm thinking, or they're just shy, it could be, it could
be, you know, when we were on radio, the ladies owned the show for probably the first seven
or eight years of car connection live, where we are live automotive calling program, that's
how we started, the ladies owned the show.
And then one day, where have I heard that before?
I think it was a Jed Clampant theme song, then one day when shooting at some food, something
about crude, I can't remember now, crude, like oil, not crude as in being nasty, but then
all of a sudden the fellas started calling in, and there was pushback, there was, there
was a gal pushback, but anyways, I share that with you because it's been an interesting

on fun Friday we're ready for that some very interesting questions we have another motor
mouse summer tech tip number 11 coming up sunshades not just for looks and I'm a fan I have been a
fan of the sunshades for a long time and then I'm going to tell you why it is so important
mm-hmm they're a very unique tool like some of the people I know they're unique tools to
the F some of those in your circle unique tools well what a week we have covered some ground we
have had technical difficulties and now have hands-on now yes I still part of my brain feels
like a melted grilled cheese sandwich this morning but we made it through setting up a four terabyte
external hard drive to stop plugging up the pro max 16 yes but it's a one terabyte we're
operating on 39 gigabytes yeah you have to do housekeeping so now we have production housekeeping
all set up as of yesterday so I feel so much better about that because it's all about maintenance
everything is maintenance in fact you have to watch the video to see if the Simon eyes
3000 survived or not you might want to check that out mm-hmm yeah but maybe it did and maybe she
didn't check it out and the 2003 beetle is now in position yeah so that's a soft spot for me
right now talking about cabin air filters please don't ask a question about cabin air filters for
at least another week just change it that's it it's all finalized certified it's clean there's
no chance of hand to virus so you know I had the local firefighters come over and just stick
the hose in there didn't say can you just clean that out for me rinse it no I didn't that would be
funny though and I'd be a good video but it have to be a car that's a junker that's for sure so
anyways I was in there doing the final scrub out with the biohazard removal products I could
definitely certify it's clean it smells really good in there and I sprayed the carpets as well
with the n15 yesterday that way if there's any bacteria growing anywhere I killed it overnight
then you just go through and clean the car normally so when you put a vehicle in storage even if it's
at home while you're you know if you're snow birds and you go away for the winter and you're
like gone end of October or beginning of October and you don't return until the flowers poke up
you better do your homework on how to store that vehicle properly so I think I think I'll do a mini
series on that especially the issue this big issue with the cabin air filter and the opportunity for
mice to get into the the cavity where the air filter is and into everything else once they're in
there there's not much we can do about those side vents where you pull in fresh air and that's where
they're coming in it's a wide open hole so hey it just says come and eat at Joe's man come and stay
here and party on fellas we'll have a swiggy in a moment so get ready this is your warning shot get
your morning swiggy ready and in order whatever that is well we can weather coming up as well in

there you fill it out you take care of business it comes directly to me and then i will send that
package directly to your door so uh there's limited quantities get them while they well the the

morning for saturday's q&a hope you're having a fantastic weekend you got some things planned
take the sunshine in get out there and do stuff don't be a tater a couch tater you can be a couch
tater all winter but this time of year get out there and get some sunshine on those white milky
legs excuse me i prefer them that way no they're not they're not white milky anymore yeah i wear
shorts a lot in the summer i just you know what the pant leg thing doesn't work for me in the summer
i even like shorts on in the shop but if i'm into something gruesome like i was doing some
welding the other day that was sketchy it was a little bit sketchy i didn't want to have a
forest fire if you know what i mean all right april you are bringing it out of the gate this
morning with question number one here's what she's got and i read them as i receive them so if there's
any grammical errors errors and whatnot and language barriers um get over it yeah go get a life
my sister says that a lot you know what you just need to go get a life
hearing a noise sounds uh and it's i'm i'm hearing a noise sounds like under the hood
when i turn on the air conditioning only is this normal well here's the thing about noises and this
is where the first seven or eight years of car connection live on some big networks uh is where
i'd say could you could you ma'am um kind of duplicate that sound for me and i'll tell you
what even my producer will be going giving you the the golf clap and the thumbs up because the ladies
they hold nothing back like don't it's it'll be like you're live under the hood of their vehicle
for this question the guys well can you tell me a little bit about what it sounds like
uh what like that like what uh are you neanderthal do you have any teeth
are you chewing on a bone the guys nothing you're lucky if you could get them to go
yeah the ladies oh you got the the whole picture it was brilliant absolutely brilliant
and so with this one if you're flicking on that air conditioning and you hear something
whether it's a grunch a scrape a squeal or the smell of burning rubber yeah then you
need to shut that baby off because there's some serious stuff going on so with air conditioning
if that's the only time you're hearing something that doesn't sound right it's probably because
there's something that isn't right so it could be the compressor clutch itself is beginning to seize
up it could be the system is low and what you're hearing is the compressor ac compressor kicking
in and out rapidly that would indicate that the refrigerant level is not low enough for the low
pressure cutouts which to shut the system down and protect itself it's kind of on the edge
of that happening so it's not low enough to shut it off completely and it's not
full enough for the compressor to run full time and do a full um
rotation because the compressor doesn't run all the time it runs and then the it will shut down
and so that's why we have the switches in the system that control and monitor pressures in the
refrigerant lines so there's lots going on there so the compressor isn't running like
non-stop it does cycle that's the word i was looking for this morning without coffee that's
that's that's brilliant their motor mouth brilliant to come up with that the cycling
of the system so it could be that the belt is shellacked and it's shiny on the
backside so if you're looking down in the engine bay and you see the black strip that's your serpentine
belt if it's shiny on the back here's what it's telling you i'm done time to go yeah or i'm gonna
do a nasty down here and i'm gonna snap and rip a whole pile of stuff out of the front of your
engine and you maybe even pull your radiator right into the front of the motor and i'm not making that
up i remember that we got this uh torus came in we used to call them sorus yeah but you know what
my pops had a torus and i got it for him when i was at volksway it was a traded it had like 48,000k
on it he put like a good jillion kilometers on that driving from stevensville to oakville
every day and that thing took the pounding it was a 3.8 at the good engine in there you know
they weren't pretty to look at but you know the tempo the tow pads yeah i called them the $500
cars because it was always the same issues with them you know like wearing outbreaks suspension
steering but if unless you really abused it my pops had a temple and uh he traded that in on
this torus that i got formed through the uh the sales mangler and at work at the time and uh
man he rode that thing for a long time and uh bill god bless him took in the temple it had
over 300,000 on it and somebody scarfed that up it was in really good shape and pops kept in good
shape and i'll tell you though that was things they were incredible but anyways getting back to
the issue this uh torus came in and uh the serpentine belt broke and if it's the size of the one like
on the fj cruiser if you watch the uh the spring evaluation on our 07 fj the serpentine belt if you
it's like 15 feet long it's crazy stupid how long it is and when it breaks it's a whip
underneath the hood because it's still the engines running and the belt is wrapped around
the crankshaft and the engines running and that thing is whooping around under the hood
and on this torus it grabbed the upper radiator holes ripped it right off the radiator pulled
the radiator into the engine and ripped it right off its moorings the washer windshield washer bottle
was non-existent anymore uh what else did it grab uh it grabs a whole grabbed a whole bunch of plastic
stuff and literally shredded the bill was like 6000 dollars to put that engine bay back in
order because the serpentine belt broke so do you want that to happen to you i would recommend
when you see that at the back of it is shiny pay attention it's saying i'm done here time to take
me off put a fresh one on exactly you do not want to experience that when i i remember i remember
and recall that i went out to look at the kit this vehicle came in by c a customer called me and said
i don't know what happened just stuff was flying everywhere and it was a horrendous racket i'm afraid
to look under the hood i'm just having it towed in okay i opened the hood and i called for uh
my workmate there and go jimbo you gotta come and look at this this is something we've never seen
and i got the prop rod on there because it even grabbed the pop the prop rod off the
clip under the hood and it bent it up like a freaking pretzel like it it looked like
i can't even tell you it looked like some kind of railing for some kind of sadistic looking fence
yeah jim goes what happened i go i believe the serpentine belt broke oh my gosh like a
grenade or something went off under there there's a lot of damage yeah that was a ton of damage so
april i'm not trying to scare you but you definitely need someone to have a listen so get
your vehicle over to the service tech you trust right away and have them have a listen to figure
out what that is if it's the ac compressor starting to say good night ireen or we have a serpentine
belt that's not quite happy and it's stretched out because when you turn the air conditioning on
folks it puts a ton of stress on that serpentine belt if you don't have a separate drive belt for
air conditioning most vehicles today it's one belt drives all the accessories power steering
water pump um air conditioning alternation all of it is on one belt so when that sucker breaks
it doesn't take long to overheat the car and do a lot of damage if that belt just drops out the
bottom that's fine but if it's if it breaks it depends on where it breaks in its rotation
that will determine whether it gets wrapped around the crankshaft pulley while the engine's
still running and now you have yards of serpentine belt flapping around under there that's when the
problem starts so we don't want to get to that point we april we need to you know discover is
that an ac compressor has it got anything really to do with the air conditioning and and or is it a
belt or when the ac comes on it puts a lot of pressure on other pulleys under the hood like
alternator power steering and uh the water pump so we need to make sure that that noise is related
to directly to the air conditioning or is it from uh turning the air conditioning on because as
soon as you flick that switch you pull horsepower away from the engine and you lose fuel economy
because the engine has to work harder to run that compressor so you can lose but depending on your
engine size up to 15 to 25 horsepower and fuel economy when you're running air conditioning
fuel economy drops just so you know it drops out of sight just so that you get a good understanding
that air conditioning unit is a pretty heavy pull and draw on your engine's horsepower
all right question number two is from ellen uh seeing some spots on my driveway where i always
any spotting and the reason being is we're seeing a lot of car fires and it can happen
even when you know you're you just get home and you pull a hot car into your garage that's not a
good idea folks you should really leave it outside let it cool down then put it in there
but not everybody you know has time to do that you could be unloading the groceries from the
grab and letting the car cool off before you put in the garage
another ev fire burns the service center right to the ground just saying we're going to cover
that at some point i'm still doing a little more research and it looks like it's going to be a series
and you're going to be interested about it because it has i'm not even going to be talking much
about the cars themselves issues things that have been put behind the curtain
and never get talked about i find that part extremely enlightening so stay tuned i'll let
you know when i'm pulling that all together i've got probably 35 pages of research with links and
everything so it's not going to be attached to me whatsoever not at all you'll be able to
research till you drop just like me so anyways we have a lot of plastic under the hood and i
asked this question several weeks ago to answer put your best foot forward and give me an answer
what is plastic it's fuel it's gas so when we have any kind of leak now under
the hood that could potentially cause a fire soon as just a little piece of that plastic get started
your car is well engulfed in about eight minutes or less some of the firefighters saying three minutes
three minutes in the car is done because that plastic it is petroleum it's basically gasoline
is what the firefighters say it's gasoline once it gets started unless somebody's right there
that car is a goner in three minutes eight minutes it's completely engulfed i do have a
picture of a pickup truck i'll see if i can get permission from the owner to post that on our
youtube channel so stay with me i will take care of that three minutes was all he had to get out
of the truck saw some smoke under the hood it's just a f-150 or an f-something series pickup truck
some smoke and a little bit of smoke in the cabin area and then pulled off and the thing is engulfed
enough time to grab his wallet and personal belongings barely and get out of the vehicle
and it was over the truck did not survive so i have some pictures of that so and i think there's a
short man we might be able to turn that into a short let me i'll get permission we'll see what
we can do with that so you can see just how fast these vehicles of today catch on fire so again
i'm not trying to scare the the socks right off you ellen just that any fluids that you're seeing
spotting on the driveway you need to be investigated immediately to determine
what where who why and when and get them taken care of because with all the plastic
it doesn't take long folks and that's it it's car gone and you don't want to do that especially if
you're in financial cramp that uh if you know you lose the car that means they're gonna insurance
you're gonna battle it out with the insurance and it just gets ugly what you settle for may
not necessarily be enough to replace it and now you're in a financial more financial cramp
just like that so things change quickly is uh when stuff happens like that you're not going to get
every dollar you put into that vehicle back you're going to get what they give you and they're going
to sell you know basically nicely they'll catch you and go that's all you're getting so get lost
and go get yourself another ride and stop pestering me boy yeah that's what you're going to get that's
the nice side you go well but you know i just spent you know like thousand bucks on it well show us
some receipts and we might give you a little bit more and then you got to battle it out and it gets
ugly so it's not worth it is where i'm going it's tiring just thinking about it so if you've got some
spotting going on underneath your vehicle don't go well it's not you know it's not that big that's
that's really not a big deal it's trust me when you see a car on fire that was a big deal
that got either not diagnosed or uh just couldn't be bothered to chase it down and you didn't want
to spend the money so if i you know if i don't see it i don't care kind of thing that's going to come
back with in today's world the real world and bite you right hard in the buttocks so spotting
is important if you want to do a little gum chewing yourself get a cardboard box and right
right on the front the front so that's going to be the grill side so right front and then slide it
underneath and see what you collect and then what you can do is take that cardboard to your
service tech and go this is what i'm seeing on my driveway so we used to we developed something at
the shop and it's kind of funny but it worked it was a great tool and uh it was it was all uh we
help we we had some help with it from one of our clients dino don nice guy he worked for bell
he was funnier is all get out nice heck of a nice guy he used he brought us that
he had a car at home i can't remember what it was now um i think it was a mercury marquee
a grand marquee yes it was a grand marquee it was silver remember that now and it had some leakage
some spotting so he decided to create something called the zarky's test
and we adapted that or adopted we adopted that it worked really really well because zarky's was on
the hamilton mountain at that time and you could get this football field sized pizza in a big white
box and so don would say well you know the the whole thing is when you're running gonna run that
zarky's test you eat the pizza and you save the box and you mark front which is going to be the
front of the engine and slide it under the car white side up and then you can catch the spots
and then you bring that to your tech and go yeah this is what i'm seeing in my garage floor
so we uh we adopted that and it works extremely well i might add the pizza is delicious
and the box works as a tool so we we nicknamed it yeah that one's gonna need the zarky test
so we knew we were having pizza the next day so we could slide that cardboard under that vehicle
in the shop overnight and find out exactly what's dripping and where because we got the box marked
front so we know where the grill side is so we know where the passenger side the driver side
and the rear of the engine are sitting and that test worked extremely extremely well
so ellen you need the zarky's test so we need to uh you can do it yourself get a cardboard box
cut it open mark on the uh where the front of the vehicle is on the box slide it under
and then let that thing planted splotches on it and then take that to your tech and go this is
what i'm seeing on my driveway there you go so you want to get that nailed down so at the end of
the story is any leakage is serious leakage because that could be the be all and all of your vehicle
number three sondra or sandra we didn't talk to her so i don't know how she likes her name
pronounced so we'll do it both ways sondra or sandra i went to school with a lot of sondras
then there was one that liked to be called sandra so he couldn't mess it up it was a big deal
to them so you gotta be careful with that there's a scraping noise when i put the car in reverse
and back up and then it's gone when i go forward should i drive it well it it could be
minor and it may not be minor it could be in the brakes on the rear the rear brake system
has an issue where either you've got a brake pad that sticks or the pad what you're hearing is the
pad scraping the overnight rust that builds up on a disc brake rotor that could be what we're dealing
with but if you have not had a full brake inspection and a service performed to your brakes that's
what i would highly recommend at this point you're backing up you're hearing scrape scrape scrape
scrape scrape then you go forward and it's gone that would tell me that the brake pads are trailing
the disc brake rotors so they're not completely away from the rotors for some reason and that would
tell me we've got things binding up in the brakes on the rear that shouldn't be binding so that was
a really good ear on that one sandra nailing it completely backing up you're hearing the scraping
going forward it's gone it hasn't self-healed it's giving you the indicator that the rear brakes need
a really good looky c that's what i call it needs a really good let's get in there look and see
exactly what's going on and i would and my best guess my best foot forward would be
that the system is bunging up so the pads are not right uh they're not running freely in there and
they're not lubricated anymore so the brake pads are trailing the rotor they're scraping the rotor
and in the morning there will be always be a very light layer of rust on the the disc brake rotors
because it's naked cold steel so that usually gets scrubbed off and within the first brake
application or two and you don't hear it anymore but that that part's normal but when you're hearing
scraping that's an indicator we need to go in and have a really good look and see
what needs to be serviced replaced or repaired so you're looking at a full brake service at this
point an evaluation and a service to determine again what needs to be cleaned lubricated and
serviced or and or replaced okay so good great questions man april ellen and sandry you just
hit that out of the park well to wrap things up this morning uh i have another motor mouth
summer tech tip for you sunshades not just for looks now if you were to stroll on by the car
connection workshop you'd see a number of vehicles out there and they all have sunshades
every single one and when i of course you remove them when you go driving we're moving the vehicle
around but if you buy quality sunshades here's here's what's going to happen for you it reduces the
in-car temperature by 15 to 20% prevents the dash and the material in your vehicle from getting
sunscorched especially the dash and all the electronics that are in there if you can keep the
heat off the dash it'll prevent it from cracking and drying out it it also protects the fabric
especially in the front side of the car i'm a huge fan of window tint big time i would never
never have a vehicle without window tint even the the nisa and rogue is tinted the on the back
half is fully tinted where you know the back glass is big because it's a hatch lots of sun
comes in there and it'll scorch this i had to change the seats and the sun the sun visors and
the headliner on the the 1998 honda crv not a crv it is kind of a crv but it's a car
honda civic dx the sun just bake the material where you touch it it just crumbled right off
and it was amazing because i was in a wrecking yard in in buffalo that i know of where you can
go in and pull your own parts in and they treat you extremely well there i pretty much rebuilt the
whole 97 jeep tj wrangler from another jeep tj from 2006 from austin texas i should have bought the
whole donting but i didn't but i pretty much took the whole darn thing but anyhow in that wrecking
yard i found the twin to the rocket and i have that picture a couple of photos and in that day a
tornado came through and i was like 15 to 20 minute walk from the gate and i'm inside this car
stripping out the the headliner and the sun visors and last summer i redid the rocket and she looks
amazing inside but sun is a huge killer and on that rocket i'm going to show you in a in a video
we're getting close to getting that done now is uh the top of the front bumper got all sunscorched
so the paint is like it's there but it's dried right out so i'm going to show you how you can
fix that for $35 i got a quote on having it done at a body shop $550 i'm going to show you how you're
going to do that with a $35 custom blended rattle can with the factory painted and it's one stage
so the clear and the base is all in the can so yeah you're going to get bird's eye view on that so
the sunscreens worth the money and every time you park that vehicle day or night put your sunshade in
there you'll be surprised how much cooler it is when you get in and number two you're saving your
fabric you're saving your dash and all the electronics that are in there from getting cooked
by the sun and heat is the enemy when it comes to electrical and electronics so grab yourself a
sunshade because sunshades ain't just for looks motor mouth here if you're parking under the sun
grab a windshield sunshade it ain't just a style move it keeps your interior cooler
and protects your dash from cracking bonus no more burning your thighs on a lava hot seat
small thing big comfort in fact i saw a vehicle uh just this week real cute looking two door
convertible Mercedes top was down lady was in the gym i didn't know what's lady on i'm
i'm just i'm just backing in heading to the uh the $20 dollar store get a couple items
and i'm thinking i'm looking at that and going uh yeah i have we have convertibles and i would not
just leave the top down i'm thinking whoever's climbing in that i hope they have trousers on
because the back of your legs you're gonna jump out of that seat like your bum's on fire
i've done it i know because uh orange crush has black leather seats you put the top down
and leave it down in the sun you ain't sitting on that seat partner even with pants on trousers
it's hot and i mean it's really hot and everything you touch in it is super duper hot
that's why when we we take uh the convertibles out we always take our um tent so we parked the
vehicle under the tent with the top down because uh top down in the sun yeah so the lady a lady
comes walking out and i'm just get i'm actually i've been in the $20 dollar store got my gear and
i'm on my way i'm in the truck in the fj and i'm going oh i wonder if that's the lady that owns it
dude to do she opens the car door and yeah she sat down on the seat she just had like
you know loose fitting sun trousers i don't know what you call them but anyways she uh she leapt
off the seat pretty good and it had it didn't have dark interior it was light interior so lesson
learned there if you're going topless make sure you put the top up and put your sunshade in there
and orange crush has a very fancy sun shade that i got at the dollar store they once in a while they
have really really good ones but the cheap ones with the fabric edge don't buy those that the sun
scorches that i don't know whether it's fabric or it's paper that they put on the as piping on the
edge it goes like charcoal and it makes a stinking mess of the inside of your vehicle it's crazy
stupid so don't get yourself one of those for go but last year they had some motor trend sun shades
and i bought them all and i gave some away they were like four bucks a piece and they're heavy duty
so keep an eye get yourself a sun shade and learn how to use it and if it's a little too big what i
do is i just fold it increase it and make it custom fit and it works like a charm so just a suggestion
the sun shade you can look cool as well but it keeps your car a whole lot cooler and protects
the stuff that can cost you a lot of money so enjoy your rest of your weekend thanks for passing by
