Welcome back to EV News Daily.
03:01
Coming up today, Tesla launches a used lease scheme,
03:05
Kia's EV5 GT and China EVs direct to European buyers.
03:10
Plus they tuned later in the show,
03:12
I'll tell you why vehicle to grid is having a moment
03:15
and gaining more traction in 2025.
03:18
Well, good morning, good afternoon, good evening.

03:40
No pressure, but have a look if you'd like to get this show on the air
03:43
and join our list of legends.
03:45
Let's kick off with news of Tesla.
03:47
Started leasing certified pre-owned CPO vehicles.
03:51
These are Model 3s, Model Ys in California and Texas.
03:55
This lets drivers get behind the wheel for $215 per month
03:59
with no down payment.
04:01
There is a $700 acquisition fee,
04:04
and the first month's payment is due at signing.
04:07
This move comes just before the electric vehicle tax credits,
04:11
of course, seven and a half on new,
04:12
four grand on used, expiring on September 30th.
04:17
So Tesla has to push short-term demand
04:20
and obviously reduce any used vehicles
04:23
that have come back to them off lease.
04:25
Well, leasing used cars isn't really common
04:29
in the industry, it happens,
04:30
but Tesla is hoping it makes their vehicle scores,
04:33
sorry, their vehicles more accessible.
04:35
The company is now offering 24 month leases,
04:38
capped at 10,000 miles a year,
04:40
or 12 month terms at a 15,000 mile annual limit,
04:44
aiming to attract more buyers
04:46
with more flexible options.
04:48
Amid a 13% drop in global deliveries this year,
04:52
and around 50,000 global EVs sitting somewhere in inventory,
04:58
apparently in the UK they're having some storage issues
05:01
with how many Teslas they have here anyway.
05:03
Tesla's strategy reflects the pressure
05:06
from its slowing sales
05:07
while experts expect a bump in US sales this quarter,
05:11
and until the end of September,
05:13
I think most people agree
05:14
there will be a slowdown in Q4,
05:16
how much we don't know.
05:18
The new lease program is a good way
05:19
to keep Tesla's sales moving.
05:22
Tesla sales in Sweden aren't moving very well,
05:25
they just hit their lowest point in last month
05:29
since October 2022.
05:31
Well, last month in July,
05:32
only 163 Teslas were sold there,
05:35
which is 86% less than the same month last year,
05:37
and a big fall from June.
05:41
the first seven months of the year,
05:43
Tesla has sold 3,774 vehicles in Sweden down 63%
05:49
compared to the first seven months of 2024.
05:52
Now to encourage buyers,
05:53
good news for potential Swedish Tesla buyers,
05:57
the boss there has announced
05:59
about US$4,000 equivalent on trade-in bonus
06:03
for anyone who orders a 3 or a Y
06:05
before the end of September,
06:06
taking delivery before the end of the quarter.
06:09
That's on top of a 0% financing rate
06:12
for those picking up a 3 or a Y long-range.
06:15
The Model 3 starts around US$50,000 equivalent in Sweden.
06:21
Model Y starts around US$58,000 equivalent in Sweden.
06:25
Now these incentives were meant to end in August,
06:28
but have been extended to the end of the quarter.
06:31
Across Europe, Tesla sales fell 44%
06:35
in the first half of this year,
06:36
hurt by some production delays,
06:38
change over to Model Y,
06:39
rising competition,
06:41
and controversy around their CEO.
06:44
Tesla's July sales were okay in Norway and Spain
06:48
if you pick out certain monthly figures,
06:49
but they're dropping in Germany and the Netherlands.
06:51
German sales are down 55% for instance,
06:54
and so possibly other countries could see
06:56
some of those good deals
06:58
that the Swedes are getting at the moment.
06:59
And finally, Tesla's cars in China
07:02
now run on Chinese artificial intelligence.
07:05
Now you might think why is that,
07:07
but doesn't Elon Musk own an AI company
07:11
Well, yes, but this is China,
07:14
and you have to play by their rules.
07:16
And so Tesla has had to go to a Chinese AI company,
07:19
even though they have their own inside the business,
07:23
ByteDance's Dao Bao, a DuBao model,
07:27
powers tasks like navigation and music.
07:29
DeepSeq, which you may have heard of,
07:31
handles the AI conversations.
07:33
Of course, there are issues around
07:34
using DeepSeq outside of China,
07:37
some security concerns,
07:39
using DeepSeq is free to use by the way,
07:42
but there's some data handling issues,
07:44
which they process your data differently
07:47
to how other AI companies do it,
07:50
questions around where all of their servers are as well.
07:52
But in China, well, that's no concern
07:55
to Chinese central government.
07:57
And so DeepSeq is the one that is used.
08:00
These partnerships keep voice and AI data
08:02
totally within China's walls,
08:05
as required by the regulations.
08:07
DeepSeq's model was also picked up
08:09
by the rival automaker BYD for their system.
08:12
Meanwhile, in the US, Tesla drivers will be using
08:15
the GROC chatbot from XAI on all models
08:22
So software 2025.26 or later.
08:26
Now Kia is launching the EV5 GT,
08:29
its high performance version of their midsize SUV.
08:33
It'll launch in 2026, early next year as well,
08:36
following the launch of the standard EV5,
08:38
arriving in Korea and Europe with customers very soon.
08:44
EV5 GT is also called Project OV1 GT.
08:48
It's been in some hot weather testing in Arizona,
08:50
spotted by the spy photographers.
08:52
The EV5 will be Kia's fifth purpose-built electric vehicle,
08:57
strong demand for midsize SUVs,
08:59
as we see from the, well, the Model Y
09:01
being the most popular vehicle in the world
09:04
for a couple of years running.
09:05
The GT badge, not GT line,
09:08
GT badge reserved for Kia's proper powerful models.
09:12
Putting the EV5 GT up there with the EV6 GT,
09:16
EV9 GT, I think 5N, for instance,
09:19
when they re-engineer the vehicles,
09:22
they actually do some decent stuff to it,
09:23
not just calling it a GT line.
09:25
So we think 450 kilowatts or so,
09:29
that's over 600 horsepower, dual motor, of course.
09:31
3.5 seconds, 0-60, is properly rapid.
09:35
Launch control, virtual gear shift, electronic control,
09:39
suspension, and all the good stuff.
09:42
Now, China's EVs could well be delivered
09:44
to European buyers directly.
09:46
Getting a Chinese EV delivered to your door in Europe
09:49
Instead of handling customs or collection at ports,
09:53
buyers now have EVs and plug-in hybrids
09:56
delivered straight to them.
09:58
A new e-commerce platform,
10:00
which claims to be the biggest for Chinese EVs abroad,
10:04
actually sold 7,000 vehicles in the first half of the year.
10:08
Most of them are plug-in hybrids,
10:09
which aren't hit by the Europeans' extra tariffs
10:12
of 35% plus in some cases on pure BEVs.
10:17
Extended range models, E-Revs,
10:19
count as a BEV in terms of the tariffs,
10:23
since their gas engines charge a battery
10:26
and the gas engine doesn't drive the wheels.
10:29
Sales in the US almost stopped because of tariffs.
10:32
They had 30 Chinese vehicles I sold,
10:34
I think I saw sold there.
10:37
Meanwhile, Chinese brands reached a 5.9% market share
10:41
in Europe in May, more than double their previous share
10:44
and totaling over 65,000 reservations.
10:49
That's really interesting.
10:51
So it's called China EV Marketplace.
10:53
If you are interested, go and have a look online.
10:56
You'll find their website, which is giving you all the details
11:02
about their new door-to-door service for European customers.
11:05
So you can purchase a road legal, completely legal EV,
11:10
but it comes directly from China.
11:13
They look after all of the customs process
11:15
and no going to the port to try and find someone
11:19
with your keys walking around.
11:22
I think they did until recently ship to the US,
11:26
but with all the tariff conversations,
11:28
not worth operating their business stateside for now,
11:32
but focusing on any European customers
11:35
that want to order a Chinese Bev directly
11:38
from the factory in China,
11:40
according to Jacob Gersel, the COO of China EV Marketplace.
11:46
Go and have a look at that website if you are interested.
11:49
I'd probably still want to go through a dealer
11:50
and have some sort of level of support,
11:52
but hey, give it a go.
11:54
Now Nissan is working with their partners
11:58
on solid-state batteries and Lycap technologies,
12:01
teaming up with Nissan to make solid-state batteries for EVs
12:04
and to make them cheaper
12:05
by improving how the cathode electrodes are made.
12:08
Instead of the usual method that uses solvents
12:12
and needs drying, Lycap's dry electrode method
12:15
skips those steps, producing electrodes faster,
12:18
cheaper and with lower environmental impact.
12:20
This technology has struggled to work well at scale
12:24
until now, they say.
12:26
Their new activated dry electrode process changes all of that.
12:30
With Nissan's support, the two companies
12:31
hope to accelerate the rollout of solid-state batteries,
12:35
key, some say, to unlocking really big range
12:38
with sensible battery sizes.
12:41
In July, they made their first full-sized roll
12:43
of cathode material at a new plant in California
12:46
that has a 300 megawatt hour capacity.
12:49
Solid-state batteries are popular with car makers
12:51
and the energy storage sector.
12:53
They can hold more energy.
12:54
They can charge faster.
12:57
In theory, they're going to last longer as well.
13:00
And if this new manufacturing process proves successful,
13:03
it could cut costs and speed up the adoption of EVs even faster.
13:07
We'll take a break.
13:08
We'll talk about UK Van Drivers,
13:11
NEO launching with a subscription option
13:14
and a bit of vehicle to grid chat.
13:16
Stick around back in a mow.
13:18
The holidays are expensive.

16:20
All right, welcome back to the podcast.
16:22
All right, in part two today,
16:23
let's kick off by talking about South Korea's government
16:25
looking at new EV purchase subsidies after years of reductions.
16:29
The Environment Minister said at the National Assembly
16:32
that officials are aiming for around subsidies
16:34
that would be equivalent to about US$3,000.
16:38
They'll start next year up from the equivalent of about US$2,000.
16:42
Four years ago, you get US$5,000 equivalent, that's $7,000,000 off an EV,
16:48
but they've been cutting them.
16:50
The cuts were meant to spark competition.
16:51
But high EV prices and slower sales than expected
16:55
are leading to a policy rethink.
16:57
Stricter rules are also coming starting this year.
17:00
Only EVs that share state-of-charge data
17:03
with charging stations and have product liability insurance
17:07
will get the subsidies.
17:08
These changes follow last year's apartment garage fire.
17:13
Destroyed 80 cars and there was a lot of scrutiny
17:16
around electric vehicles.
17:19
Three out of four UK van drivers now think fully electric
17:22
could be right for their business, rising from 67% last year to 75% this year.
17:28
And most saying those that have vehicles for work,
17:31
you won't be surprised here, it's the cost savings
17:34
that are the main draw.
17:35
Over 60% of van drivers say running an electric van
17:38
would be cheaper than their diesel,
17:40
but some doubts remain, some worry about charging times,
17:44
Four in 10 have range anxiety, that's natural.
17:47
Even so, nearly seven in 10 drivers who haven't switched yet
17:51
are going to look at an electric van for their next purchase.
17:53
That's a huge number, by the way, 70% EV consideration.
17:56
You don't see that very often.
17:58
Volkswagen wants to make the move easier
18:01
with their charge anytime offer for commercial vehicle buyers as well.
18:07
So charging your commercial vehicle at home,
18:09
saving money, giving you some free miles in there as well
18:13
to help get you into an EV van.
18:16
Now let's go to one of the Chinese names, Ito.
18:19
Not one of the massive names that we talk about all the time,
18:21
the likes of BYD's vehicles,
18:23
but Ito's new M7 has actually moved the LiDAR inside.
18:28
So a joke about it being the taxi cab light on top,
18:31
because it is just like a little hump on top of the,
18:34
at the minute, the middle of the roof of the car,
18:37
and you can't really get away from seeing it.
18:39
It does look like the taxi light's about to come on,
18:42
but that's the best place to put it, the engineers say.
18:44
And so that's what LiDAR is really good at,
18:46
if you give it good vision.
18:47
Now Ito moved it inside the cabin, placing it behind the windshield
18:52
and new setup the first time in a mass market car
18:55
that uses an in-cabin LiDAR system.
18:58
It scans the road by firing out laser pulses
19:00
and combines them with camera footage
19:02
to build a complete 3D map of the road,
19:04
giving the car a clearer sense of its surroundings
19:06
and seeing stuff that the human eye can't see.
19:08
Safety features like emergency steering, very good at night,
19:13
spotting odd hazard small hazards that other sensors don't miss.
19:17
That's where LiDAR is really good.
19:19
And they can pick out obstacles just 30 centimetres tall at night.
19:23
And even if you're doing, they say 62 miles an hour,
19:26
can bring the vehicle to a complete stop
19:28
and miss the obstacle that's 50 metres ahead of you.
19:32
Now, because it's behind the windshield though,
19:34
it's not as powerful and as effective
19:36
as when they put the big LiDAR lump on top of the roof.
19:39
And so they're focusing on highway aids.
19:42
So navigation crews assist and are not using it
19:45
for all things like city self-driving,
19:48
which is another way of doing it.
19:49
It certainly improves the aesthetic
19:51
of the outside of the vehicles.
19:53
NEO is next in the news,
19:54
opening pre-sales for their new large SUV,
19:56
the big one, it's called the ES8.
19:59
The starting price of about US$58,000 equivalent.
20:03
This is a really nice vehicle, by the way,
20:07
It's a very conventionally styled SUV.
20:11
And so a very tall roof line
20:13
that runs all the way to the back of the vehicle
20:14
and then goes straight down.
20:16
That's good for aero.
20:17
It's good for a third row of passengers as well.
20:21
So very, very conventionally styled, big SUV.
20:24
Exactly what you think the box shape would look like.
20:28
And you can now also get it as a battery as a service plan.
20:30
So the base price comes down to about US$43,000 equivalent.
20:34
And then you lease the battery.
20:36
First deliveries in China before the end of September.
20:38
ES8 comes in three versions,
20:40
including a six seat 2 plus 2 plus 2 luxury executive version
20:47
with battery as a service.
20:49
And the it's a, you know,
20:51
there is an outgoing model that this replaces.
20:53
This one is noticeably bigger.
20:54
It's 5.3 meters long, 2.
20:56
Just over two meters wide
20:58
and a 3.1 meter wheelbase as well.
21:00
So a big, a big vehicle.
21:03
Nice design on the outside.
21:05
Like I say, very traditional looking actually.
21:06
This is nothing crazy and weird about this,
21:08
just a big three row SUV
21:11
that I think looks pretty conventional.
21:13
It's got high product,
21:14
high definition projection headlights with lane tracking.
21:17
It's got those concealed door handles that disappear into the car,
21:22
which China's having a look at, by the way,
21:24
not these particular door handles, but generally,
21:27
you know, those flush door handles
21:28
that are motorized in and out.
21:31
Yeah, China's having a good old look at that.
21:33
We'll discuss maybe more on a future podcast
21:35
about why they're doing that.
21:38
And that's not an EV thing.
21:39
You can put motorized door handles on a combustion car,
21:42
but is perhaps more popular with EVs.
21:45
We'll update you on that when we get some news from China.
21:47
A hidden rear wiper on this vehicle
21:50
and a big light bar across the rear.
21:54
Now finally, vehicle to grade is having a moment in 2025.
21:58
Lots of coverage about this, lots of new hardware coming up.
22:01
And EVs with vehicle to grid balance the grid
22:04
by acting as mobile batteries.
22:06
One of the most famous names in lithium-ion battery development,
22:09
Dr. Jeff Dunn says vehicles that can charge when renewables are high
22:15
or when prices are high feedback into the grid
22:19
is where EVs come into their own.
22:20
They absorb surplus solar power or wind power for instance,
22:24
and you can even run your home off your car at night
22:27
when the sun goes down.
22:28
Particularly if overnight you are literally
22:30
maybe just doing the washing or the dishwasher
22:32
or it's a very low load.
22:34
You can run your whole car quite easily from your house,
22:37
from your car rather.
22:38
Now owners set the conditions,
22:42
how much charge your car goes down to,
22:44
how to do your energy trading and things like that.
22:47
There's an interesting case that Ampere,
22:50
which is Renault's bit,
22:52
Ampere's been doing with 500 customised Renault Fives
22:56
using smart scheduling and controlling.
22:59
Vehicle to grid in that case, the Renault case,
23:02
didn't affect the battery health.
23:03
Cars driven 20,000 kilometres a year would keep
23:07
about the same battery capacity as not using vehicle to grid.
23:11
Over 10 years that would be 5 megawatt hours a year.
23:17
That's about 1500 battery cycles.
23:20
And so with no real damage done to the battery,
23:24
if you give it, I don't know, 20 cents a kilowatt hour,
23:26
it's a lot more in some places, a bit less in some.
23:29
But that could earn you 10 grand over the course of that period.
23:34
The trial participants in this trial with the Renault Fives
23:37
earned about 230 pounds a year.
23:40
But yeah, over 10 years in optimal conditions,
23:43
10 grand in your pocket for doing some energy trading.
23:47
Now Dr. Jeff Darn believes scaling vehicle to grid
23:49
in North America has the potential to be huge
23:53
as each EV can store and release about a megawatt hour of energy per year.
23:59
A million cars and you get into terawatt hour territory here.
24:04
And this is properly exciting.
24:06
Decentralized storage, keeping the grid stable
24:09
and making you some money.
24:11
I'm not surprised even the experts like Jeff Darn
24:15
are getting so excited about vehicle to grid in 2025.
24:19
Let's see what comes.
