04:01
We'll start with news of Tesla still struggling in Europe.
04:06
This is July's data.
04:07
I know we're expecting probably April's data
04:10
in the next couple of days to start rolling in
04:12
from the first countries that report kind of their daily figure,
04:15
so we get them straight away.
04:17
So we are looking back here at July's numbers.
04:21
But EV sales in Europe saw significant changes.
04:23
Tesla's sales across the EU's,
04:26
the European Union, the UK,
04:28
and the European Free Trade Association was down by 40%,
04:34
falling to 8,837 vehicles
04:37
and reducing its market share to 0.8%.
04:40
Meanwhile, BYD surged ahead,
04:42
increasing its July sales by over 200%
04:45
to 13,500 vehicles and capturing a 1.2 market share,
04:49
overtaking Tesla for the first time.
04:51
Overall, battery electric vehicles made up 15.6%
04:55
of new car registrations in the region,
04:57
up from 12.5% the previous year,
05:00
while hybrid cars reached a high share as well of 34.7.
05:05
Other Chinese brands, such as SAIC,
05:07
also expanding rapidly with almost a 2% market share
05:11
from January to July.
05:14
During the first seven months of the year,
05:17
Tesla's European sales have continued to decline
05:21
down between about 33 and 43% country to country.
05:26
Its market share in the EU fell,
05:28
it halved really 2.1 to 1.2%,
05:32
highlighting the downward trend.
05:34
At the same time, BYD and other Chinese brands are growing
05:38
because of low prices,
05:39
a broader model range, smart marketing,
05:42
even in the face of tariffs.
05:43
In July, total new EU car registrations, up 6%.
05:48
So I mentioned that because everything is going
05:51
in the right direction in terms of EVs.
05:53
Germany, Spain, Italy,
05:54
as European and Chinese companies increase offerings
05:57
and price competition,
05:59
the EV market is becoming a bit more balanced out.
06:01
There's no dominant player over here,
06:03
like obviously my US listeners will know
06:05
that well over half of your EV market
06:08
is simply Tesla alone.
06:10
We don't get the same situation over here.
06:13
In fact, quite the opposite.
06:15
So I'm really interested to see
06:16
in the second half of this year,
06:19
what will Tesla do to roll something out
06:22
that recaptures that spark, that passion
06:26
and those sales figures as well?
06:29
Well, obviously we're going to be talking more
06:31
about the Tesla Model Y performance soon.
06:34
Will they launch the market fully?
06:37
The six-seater Model Y L,
06:40
is it going to be something else?
06:41
Is it going to be the roll-out of more autonomy
06:43
as different areas approve it?
06:46
Well, wait and see.
06:47
Looking forward to seeing what Tesla come with.
06:49
However, one of those big things,
06:52
as I just mentioned,
06:53
that could spark some sales is the Model Y performance.
06:56
Tesla's unveiled the Model Y performance in Europe
06:58
with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup.
07:01
460 horsepower, that's 343 kilowatts
07:04
and acceleration that outpaces supercars, frankly.
07:07
0-62 miles an hour, that's 100 kph.
07:12
the top speed is limited to 155 miles an hour,
07:15
which should be plenty for German auto barns,
07:19
positioning the Model Y right up against
07:22
the likes of the BMW M5 and the Audi RS6
07:26
in terms of performance.
07:27
Orders here in the UK from today,
07:30
you can go get one at 6190
07:34
with European configurators showing a September arrival
07:37
and deliveries expected from October
07:39
in some European regions in Germany.
07:41
The price is 62,000 euros.
07:44
Launch markets are Europe and the Middle East.
07:47
Other regions will follow.
07:48
Model Y performance uses
07:50
Tesla's latest high-energy density cells, they say,
07:54
but I have nothing more apart from that.
07:57
A feature shared with the Model Y performance,
08:00
Although Tesla hasn't disclosed the exact battery capacity,
08:03
we can pretty much guess
08:04
where WLTP range is a hundred and,
08:10
which nearly matches
08:12
the less powerful all-wheel drive long range.
08:15
Fast charging says Tesla will add 150 miles in 15 minutes.
08:19
Now, the chassis does get adaptive suspensions
08:23
or adaptive dampers.
08:24
They come over from the Model 3 performance,
08:26
calibrated for the Model Y though,
08:28
along with revised suspension hardware
08:30
and drive modes to improve high-speed driving
08:33
and overall road manners.
08:34
21-inch alloys are standard
08:36
with a staggered set-up front to rear for better grip,
08:40
replacing the 19s and 20-inch wheels of other trims.
08:43
Exterior improvements include
08:45
an aerodynamically efficient front bumper,
08:48
a diffuser-style rear bumper,
08:50
a large carbon fiber rear spoiler,
08:52
and red brake calipers inside its interesting.
08:56
Gone is the 15.4-inch display landscape,
08:59
obviously, in all modern Teslas.
09:02
They've gone 16-inch, a bit of a bump.
09:03
It's Tesla's highest-resolution panel yet.
09:07
The front sports seats are heated ventilated
09:09
and feature larger bolsters
09:11
for improved lateral support during cornering
09:14
with some plaid-inspired badging.
09:17
Production takes place at Tesla's Brandenburg facility
09:22
The launch is part of a broader Model Y refresh,
09:25
which includes lower-priced entry variants
09:27
in the long way and a long wheelbase,
09:29
as I mentioned, six-seat version Model YL.
09:32
Tesla is gonna have to address that European sales decline.
09:38
They're obviously putting out fires around the world,
09:41
as it were, because, not literally,
09:42
but China, it's to do with competition.
09:45
Europe, I think it's a mix of issues.
09:47
The US still strong, but obviously tax credit going,
09:51
and so very, with tariffs as well,
09:54
very fluid time, I think, for all EV makers.
09:59
One thing in their control, though,
10:01
is how quickly they roll out autonomy
10:04
once different regions and areas agree to it.
10:07
Well, Tesla's launched its full self-driving
10:09
supervised down under in Australia and New Zealand,
10:13
entering right-hand drive markets for the very first time.
10:15
It's hands-free, but supervised.
10:17
Driving systems now available on local roads,
10:20
following reports of a major Tesla announcement incoming.
10:24
We thought we knew what this was going to be.
10:26
Available for Model 3 and Model Y
10:28
with hardware for, with plans for support.
10:32
For more vehicles coming,
10:34
customers can buy the software for 10,000 Aussie dollars,
10:38
that's about six and a half grand US,
10:40
or subscribe monthly.
10:42
All new Tesla buyers in Australia
10:44
get 30 days free trial to test the system.
10:48
They've got the auto journalists
10:50
and the car reviewers to have a look.
10:52
One review by the Chasing Cars website says,
10:55
it's better than probably 60% of Australian drivers.
11:00
Interesting Tesla said in July
11:02
that FSD supervised past all the required reviews
11:05
in Australia and New Zealand,
11:07
and now was doing its final checks.
11:10
There'll be, you know, they said the technology's ready.
11:13
It'll now go down to the various areas
11:16
and how, you know, risk averse,
11:19
or, you know, risk forward, different places are.
11:23
Whether we'll see it on European roads,
11:26
well, again, it's different, isn't it?
11:27
Because the UK, we're not tied anymore
11:29
thanks to Brexit to the EU.
11:31
We might want to be a bit more lenient.
11:33
I think getting it through the bureaucracy in the EU
11:37
is gonna take maybe a little bit longer, we'll see.
11:39
Okay, let's move on.
11:40
GM is pausing a shift to do with some of their EV makers.
11:46
They're also temporarily laying off 360 workers
11:49
at Factory Zero in Detroit.
11:51
From tomorrow to October the 6th,
11:54
one of the two daily shifts making the Hummer EV
11:56
and the Cadillac Escalade IQ will pause
11:59
according to automotive news.
12:02
This change doesn't affect production
12:03
of the Silverado EV or the Sierra.
12:06
They're also built at Factory Zero.
12:08
Of the 360 workers, about 200 already set for layoff
12:12
during the week with plans to come back.
12:16
They will now stay furloughed though
12:18
until October the 6th.
12:21
In the first half of the year,
12:22
GM sold 3,766 Cadillac Escalade IQs
12:26
and 8,000 GMC Hummer EVs.
12:29
That's both the Mixer, the Pickup and the SUV
12:33
in the United States.
12:35
All right, moving on.
12:36
And SAIC, which is the owner of MG,
12:40
has launched the all new MG4 Pure Electric Compact
12:43
at the Chengdu Auto Show.
12:45
Five trims are priced from
12:47
9,500 US dollars equivalent.
12:49
That's 68,000 yuan.
12:51
All the way up to 14,000 US dollars equivalent.
12:55
And the Anshin Edition is the one
12:58
with the semi-solid state battery delivery this year.
13:03
So CLTC range, that's obviously on the China cycle,
13:10
Power comes from the integrated motor,
13:13
120 kilowatts power on that
13:16
and the top speed of 99 miles an hour.
13:19
But really what we're interested in
13:21
is the batteries in this.
13:23
Because like I say, semi-solid state,
13:26
first mainstream vehicle to come out there.
13:29
Some of the batteries at LFP,
13:31
those packs are gonna be either 43 or 54 kilowatt hours.
13:37
The semi-solid state version is different
13:40
and that is coming later in the year.
13:43
Offering, we think, the first,
13:46
I think anyway, the first mainstream example
13:48
of a battery like this coming out at a price.
13:51
Like I say, the model range starts at 9,500 US equivalent.
13:55
Looking quite different to the MG4,
13:57
very popular vehicle over here actually.
13:59
They've kinda softened it.
14:00
The MG4 was a bit spiky, I would say, like a CUPRA.
14:05
And they've made it all friendly and cuddly.
14:07
A bit like a Volkswagen.
14:09
12-volt trisonic radars,
14:11
four 360 surround view cameras,
14:13
an eight megapixel front camera
14:15
and a rear-facing camera as well.
14:18
Looks after some of the autonomy features.
14:22
All right, we'll take a break when we come back.
14:24
Loads more to discuss on the podcast.
14:26
Got a bit of zero emission trucking to talk about.
14:29
A new Visa payment card to charge your EV.
14:33

Now, one of the curious little loopholes
18:21
of the current or the new UK grant
18:25
was that if you had a version of the car you were selling,
18:29
under 37,000 pounds, if you're a car maker,
18:32
that was in the base trim.
18:33
As long as the powertrain was the same,
18:36
you can have some top trims going up to any price
18:38
and it would still get the money off the car.
18:40
Well, the rules and regs have been tightened
18:44
There is now a cap of 42,000 pounds
18:47
on qualifying variants.
18:49
That stops any higher price trims getting discounts.
18:52
Launched last month, it's 3,750 pounds off a new EV.
18:56
If it's priced under 37,000 pounds,
18:59
that as long as the cheapest version of the model range
19:02
was below 37, they all got the discount.
19:06
And so as long as the same battery, it would all apply.
19:10
Now there is a cap of 42,000 pounds.
19:12
You've got a 5,000 pound window to get that discount.
19:16
One example, after Nissan introduced a 37,000 pound
19:20
Aria in entry level trim,
19:24
all front wheel drive versions of that vehicle,
19:28
all the way up to the Evolve trim,
19:30
which is 44,500 pounds, got the government grant.
19:35
Now the government's changed the rules,
19:36
so that particular one won't get the grant.
19:40
We'll wait and see if any car makers
19:41
do a little finessing around with their pricing.
19:44
I'll keep you in touch.
19:46
The European truck and bus manufacturers,
19:49
say they're expanding their zero emission portfolios.
19:52
The European Carmakers Association, the ACEA,
19:56
has now issued its 2025 update covering models on the market
20:01
and those launching soon.
20:02
They say at least 45 zero emission truck models
20:07
are available and four new models
20:09
are entering production soon.
20:10
These cover use cases from urban and regional delivery.
20:13
It's a long haul, heavy duty operations.
20:16
At least 20 zero emission bus models are available
20:19
and three new additions in series production since last year.
20:23
They serve cities and regions increasingly
20:26
into urban and long distance routes as well.
20:29
That's a great bit of news.
20:31
Octopus Energy, my electricity provider.
20:34
Our Octopus Electroverse, in fact,
20:37
sponsor of this podcast has teamed up with Visa
20:41
and they've launched the UK's
20:42
first Electroverse Business Payments card.
20:45
The card is designed to make managing EV fleet charging easier
20:50
by combining everything that you have to pay for.
20:52
So that could be your EV charging, your tolls,
20:56
your car wash if you've got to have the van looking nice
20:59
and even meal payments if you are given that allowance.
21:04
All on one card, fleet managers can set spending limits,
21:08
control what drivers can buy and change the settings.
21:11
Anytime you can upload digital receipts
21:13
and put it all through on the same system.
21:16
Of course, it works with Octopus Electroverse,
21:18
the largest EV charging network for consumers in Europe.
21:22
Electroverse gives access to over one million charging points
21:25
in 40 countries with more than 1200 charging brands
21:28
like Ioniti, InstaVolt and Osprey.
21:32
That is brilliant news.
21:33
Always good when fleet charging gets a little bit easier
21:37
and running fleet vehicles.
21:39
Now, in the first half of 2025,
21:42
Ukraine imported a bunch of EVs
21:45
that despite everything that Ukraine is going through,
21:49
they still imported 42,700 electric vehicles.
21:53
That's up 40% from the same time last year.
21:58
This comes from the Ukav Toprom Association
22:03
using the state statistics.
22:05
Most of the increase was due to used electric cars,
22:09
so these weren't all new cars coming in.
22:12
Out of all the imports,
22:13
9,500 were new electric vehicles
22:16
and there were 33,000 used electric vehicles.
22:20
The sources vary, they say,
22:23
91% coming from China, interestingly.
22:27
4% from Japan, 3% from Germany for used EVs.
22:32
Of all the used EVs coming into Ukraine,
22:34
39% came from the United States.
22:38
That's a long way to come for used EVs, isn't it?
22:41
17% from Korea and 15% from Germany.
22:45
Top new electric car imports into the country.
22:48
BYD Song Plus of EWID Unix.
22:53
Zeke is 001, 7X in the Audi Q4, e-tron.
22:57
The most imported used models
22:59
with a Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3,
23:00
Nissan Leaf, Hyundai Kona and Kia Nero,
23:03
even though a country is going through what it is going through,
23:06
they're still buying a lot of EVs.
23:08
And finally, which Formula One team is ready to go electric,
23:12
even if that might not be on the track?
23:15
Well, I mean, I say that,
23:17
they have been going electric on the track,
23:19
but in formulary, but they're ending that.
23:22
I'm talking Mercedes, Mercedes AMG.
23:26
Formula One team has been moving its race cars
23:29
with fully electric vehicles,
23:31
becoming the first F1 team to go all electric
23:34
in terms of how it moves their things around.
23:38
After a pilot during the British Grand Prix a few weeks ago now,
23:42
the team is using the Mercedes-Benz E-Actros 600s.
23:47
So, Bradley, near Silverstone, actually,
23:50
it's very much in that whole kind of Formula One area.
23:53
So it's not right outside Silverstone's gates,
23:55
that'll be Aston Martin,
23:56
but you go down a couple of roundabouts
23:58
and then you get to Mercedes-Benz.
24:00
And so it's very close to the kind of heart of motorsport.
24:05
And that does mean that when the vehicles go back there,
24:08
a lot of Formula One is based in the UK.
24:11
In fact, all kind of in a very similar area, it's sort of.
24:13
And so the cars come back here,
24:16
they need to be serviced and a lot of the support stuff
24:20
is all freighted around the world,
24:22
whether that is air freight or sea freight or whatever.
24:25
But a lot of the time,
24:26
the vehicles have to either come back
24:27
or new parts and things like that.
24:28
So especially for the European part of the season,
24:30
road transport is used a lot.
24:33
And Mercedes-Benz saying that they are now using
24:37
the Electric E-Actros 600s.
24:41
They moved their W16 race cars from Bradley
24:45
to the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort.
24:47
Not a million miles to go, must admit.
24:49
It's a quick hop across the North Sea.
24:52
I come from, as many listeners know,
24:54
I've mentioned before, I'm a Norfolk boy,
24:56
an East Anglian boy.
24:57
I grew up in Lowstaff,
24:58
which is the most easterly point in the country.
25:02
So Ness Point, if you ever want to go
25:04
to the most easterly bit of our fine island,
25:08
there's not much there from what I remember.
25:11
I've been back in a few years, a bird's-eye factory,
25:14
making some fish fingers and it's probably about all.
25:17
But anyway, and there's not much to see actually,
25:19
because the sea where I grew up is pretty brown,
25:22
to be honest with you.
25:23
It's not like down here on the South Coast,
25:25
I'm a bit of a softy and I moved down
25:26
to where it's a little bit warmer.
25:27
However, from where I am, from where I grew up,
25:30
on the most easterly bit of the country,
25:32
it's not a long way to get to Zandvoort.
25:35
It's across and up a little bit.
25:36
And so the cars didn't have to go too far,
25:40
but still, fantastic that they did it.
25:42
With electric power, the EATROS has a 600 kilowatt hour
25:46
LFP pack with zero tailpipe emissions,
25:49
of course, 311 miles per charge.
25:52
It was 418 miles to get to the racetrack
25:57
They do 25 minute stops to charge
25:59
on megawatt charging system to go 20 to 80.
26:04
And the life cycle CO2 emissions are reduced by 80%
26:07
compared to diesel trucks.
26:09
Fewer charging stops and fast top-ups reduced downtime
26:11
in Formula One logistics.
26:13
Daimler Truck UK is working with the team
26:16
to show them how battery electric logistics supports
26:19
their long-haul operations.
26:22
Long time listeners of the podcast know,
26:24
and hello if you're new to the show, by the way,
26:26
that I'm a huge Formula One fan,
26:28
worked for many years in Formula One
26:30
during the Formula One podcast.
26:32
And so people say, but maybe you love EVs.
26:35
I don't know, I know, but
26:38
we haven't got to stop burning everything, have we?
26:41
If we can do 99% of all journeys on electric,
26:45
and then we, I don't know, have some motor racing,
26:48
is that really a problem?
26:50
I'm not too evangelical about doing every last,
26:53
every last drop of combustion.
26:56
And so fascinating to tie those two little passions
27:02
