All season tires can be used year-round and work well in different weather conditions. They are a good option if you don't want to change your tires for winter and summer.
The Chevrolet Malibu is a car that many people use for everyday driving. The 2025 model is the latest version, which means it has new features and improvements compared to older models.
Windshield wipers are the rubber blades that move across your car's windshield to wipe away rain or snow. They can wear out and may not work as well if they are old or damaged.
The check engine light is a warning light on your car's dashboard. If it lights up, it means there's a problem with the engine or emissions system that needs to be checked.
A diagnostic trouble code is a special code that your car's computer saves when it finds a problem. Mechanics can read this code to figure out what's wrong with your car.
The gas cap is the lid that keeps your car's fuel tank closed. If it's not on tight, it can cause a warning light to come on, even though it's a simple fix.
A misfire happens when the engine doesn't work right, causing it to shake or lose power. It can be due to problems like bad spark plugs or fuel issues.
The Ford Explorer is a type of SUV that can carry many passengers and has a lot of space for cargo. The 2017 version has some modern features that help keep you safe while driving.
Low beam headlights are the lights on the front of your car that help you see at night without shining too brightly into other drivers' eyes. They are important for safe driving.
The headlight assembly is the whole part that contains the light for your car. If it breaks, you usually have to replace the entire unit instead of just the light bulb.
A terminal connection is where the wires connect to the battery. If these connections are loose or corroded, it can cause problems like draining the battery.
Rodent tape is a special tape that helps keep mice and rats from chewing on important parts of a car. It has stuff on it that makes it taste bad to them.
The oil drain plug is a small part that helps you change the oil in your car. It lets the old oil out so you can put in new oil, which keeps the engine running smoothly.
The Toyota Land Cruiser is a large SUV that's great for off-roading and has many luxury features. The 2024 version includes new technology and is built to be very durable.
The Jeep Wrangler is a tough, off-road vehicle that's great for driving on rough roads or trails. It's known for its strong build and ability to go almost anywhere.
Wheel bearings help your car's wheels spin freely. If they are worn out, they can make a humming sound that gets louder as you drive faster or put more weight on the car.
The crankshaft is a part of the engine that helps turn the energy from the fuel into movement. If there's too much or too little oil, it can hurt this part and cause problems with the engine.
An internal combustion engine is a common type of engine found in most cars. It works by burning fuel inside the engine to create power that makes the car move.

Thanks for the help you get from ASC-certified technician Nick Stowfield from Lloyd's
Automotive in St. Paul.
Nick, good morning to you.
Good morning, Danny.
How are things at Lloyd's this past week?
Things are good.
You know, the seasons are changing.
The leaves are changing and people are getting ready for what comes next, I guess.
I was going to ask you about that as the seasons do change.
You and your crew at Lloyd's kind of...
Well, you see things.
I mean, it wasn't that long ago we were talking about
AC problems with the hot weather and here we go.
Before I even get to my first question, I want to alert our listeners.
Nick will be with us till about 7.45.
Our time goes by so quickly.
We want to get you some help.
So if you're having problems with your car, your truck, your van,
and you need to bring in a first service, you think,
but you might want to know what could be wrong, what could be ailing,
and you want to get some idea before you bring it in.
Nick is going to help you out.
Do that very thing, giving you an analysis over the radio.
So call or text Nick either way, one number to remember.
651-4619-226.
Nick, we always like to say do that earlier rather than later,
because Nick takes his leave about 7.45,
making a way for Ted Ferrell's wine chat.
So call us or text us right now,
and we'll see if we can't help you out.
651-4619-226.
We're already getting some text messages as usual.
But I was having this discussion with my daughter the other day.
She is in need of new tires,
and she's contemplating getting snow tires.
Now, she doesn't have to drive every single day.
Can work out of her home from time to time, a lot.
And I said, well, I've been gambling on her every year,
and I talked to you and our friend Dan for over the years.
I thought, well, maybe this is the year I'll get snow tires.
Well, I don't.
I'm on my second set of having Lloyds put on some good all season.
You know, they're not cheap.
And I said, you might think of that.
I mean, would you say that's pretty good advice
than spending the money on maybe new wheels and snow tires,
which are great, I hear?
But what would you suggest in that scenario?
They are great.
You can notice a difference, but just as you said,
now you have a second set of wheels and tires.
You have to swap them in the fall and the spring.
You need to store one of the two sets year-round.
So it's a little cumbersome.
And I do, too, believe in most vehicles,
a vast majority of the vehicles,
a good all season tire is sufficient.
You know, I mean, there's some of these more sporty vehicles
with very low profile tires that probably benefit from those.
In those cases, oftentimes, you know,
those vehicles are a little more expensive.
People have the means and they have the capabilities
to store them.
And, you know, their vehicles may be more of an extension
of their arm that is just transportation.
So in those scenarios, I think it's just fine.
But I think the vast majority of us going up and down the road,
a good all season serves us just fine.
But in some of the good, you know, again,
they're costly, the good ones, they're pretty good in snow.
Are they not?
I mean, if you buy some really good all season,
and I know some are maybe a little better than others,
but they can handle snow.
At least I found that to be true.
But quite well, you know, and as we know as our climate,
our winters change a bit.
You never know what you're going to get.
So a good all season or an all weather tire
will service you just fine.
You know, if you're in the market for some tires,
you go to your tire dealer, your dealership,
your local mechanic and just talk to them about it.
You know, look online, do a little research,
have some questions in hand when you get there
to make sure you're getting the right fit
for your needs and your vehicle.
And before we get off the subject of snow tires,
they make some really darn good ones, don't they?
I've heard and for people that need to drive all the time,
some of these things really make a difference.
They really do.
But just keep in mind, they can help you get going.
But if you're on ice, they might help some,
but you're still going to slide.
So don't, don't, the thing I always worry about
is people get overly confident
where they go on these tires and climb up a wall.
Well, that might be the case,
but can it stop coming down?
And that's, that's the bigger problem.
Yeah, that's true.
And we get this comment or question every year about SUVs.
Oh, I got all wheel drive.
I got four wheel drive.
Yeah, you'll be sliding just like everybody else
if it's, if it's glare eyes.
All right.
I'm looking at a text.
By the way, call us Texas 6514619226.
Here is a 25 or rather 2025 Malibu.
Purchase new this year already.
Driver's side, I've had this problem myself.
Driver's side windshield wiper
is seems to be wearing faster than the passenger side.
The driver's side streaks.
I've seen this happen.
Tester says also on with previous vehicles,
wiper blades.
Do you have any idea why this is a repeat pattern?
I listen to the show every week.
Well, thanks for that.
But I've seen that with this last pair I had.
Have you heard of such a thing?
No, that's a bit strange.
You could get one of those little alcohol swabs
and try to clean the blade itself.
Maybe there's a little debris or dirt.
I will say most often the driver's side blade
is larger and longer.
So it's more likely to collect some debris
that may be caused a little wear
or a little something sticking to the edge of the blade
that makes it smear like that.
So if you have some Windex and a paper towel
or one of those alcohol swabs,
pull the blade up and just firmly go up and down.
You grab it with your pointer and your thumb
and don't get too aggressive.
You don't want to tear it obviously.
But just clean that surface off
and I think you'll be surprised at how much stuff
wipes off the edge of that wiper blade.
That might just do the trick.
It's funny because I've been having that issue
and I think it may have been a manufacturing problem with it.
You know, I buy pretty good blades.
So I'm going to change that out this weekend.
I've got another set.
We'll see what happens.
Nick, let's take a phone call.
Michael calling in from St. Paul, I believe this morning.
Thank you, Michael.
What's your question for Nick?
It's just a morning.
I had 2019 Malibu just turned 90,000 over
and the checked engine or the engine illumination is on the dash.
I know there's some maintenance marks, bench marks to check them,
checking the manual, but any thoughts on,
they used to be able to go into a auto store and borrow their code reader
and then just delete it, but they don't allow it anymore.
Well, I wasn't aware of that.
So maintenance will not turn on the check engine light.
The maintenance light might be a red light.
This is maintenance.
That's letting you know you're at a certain mileage interval,
that it's due for some items.
You can look in your owner's manual,
check with your dealership, see what's on that schedule.
If it's the orange or the yellow surface engine soon lamp,
that means it's a fault.
And if you're just taking a reset in it,
that doesn't necessarily mean you're fixing the fault.
So what happens is as we're driving our vehicles,
operating our vehicles, if the computer system identified something
out of specification, it's an emissions condition,
it's going to flag that light.
When the light comes on, it will store a code.
We take our scan tool, retrieve the code,
try to determine which system it's in,
go to that system, find those sensors, components and parts,
test them to figure out where the failure is.
Once you determine that, you can get an estimate
and communicate that with the customer.
That light is important.
That light can be something as simple as a gas cap
that is not tight.
That light can be some sort of catastrophic misfire
that's going to leave you stranded.
So you don't want to disregard it or ignore it.
At least get the information.
Once you have the information,
you can make a better informed decision.
Sounds good.
Nick, hang on.
We'll take a quick break.
Be right back on the other side

And then finally, do check out our website,
which is LloydsAutomotive.net.
Yes, indeed.
We'll do that and get you that information
before Nick leaves us,
which is about 7.45 this morning.
Any kind of a car care question, love to hear from you.
651-4619-226.
I'm just looking at a text.
Unsolicited, Nick.
Always good to hear something like this.
I'm sure you love it.
Thank you for the fantastic service on my Acadia yesterday.
Small nail, oil change, great company.
This, everyone there, it's a great place
to bring your automobile.
That comes from Curt and Judy.
Kudos to Lloyd's Automotive.
That's always good to hear, right?
Absolutely, and we have the best listeners, as you know.
We have the best customers, as I know,
and I wouldn't trade it for the world.
We're very fortunate to where we're at.
Absolutely.
All right, back to business.
2012, Chef Travers.
Blowing hot air out one vent,
cold out of the other with the AC on.
Could that be a blender issue?
I suspect that'd be correct.
And as it cools down, you might find the reverse.
So I would get that looked at
before you're blowing cold air on your feet.
You're not going to want that once the weather turns.
So that's something, this is the time of the year
that we start talking about the heating
and the cabin filters and the tires and the batteries.
And if you're noticing something a little bit off now,
get it handled now because I promised you
that first cold snap or that first trace of snow,
every shop in town is going to be way backed up
so you won't feel to get in.
So a little preventative work might be a good idea right now.
Okay, another text here says this,
and I'm wondering if this is a real cost.
2017 Ford Explorer, the low beam headlight does not work.
High beam is fine, no damage to the light.
The low beam is an LED light and the manual
says you need to go to an authorized dealer for repair.
Ford says you need to replace the whole headlight assembly
and cost is $1,600.
Does that seem right?
Could there be a blown fuse or a bad switch or module?
Possibly, obviously check the fuses.
There's a lot more parts of the vehicle that are assemblies now.
They're non-serviceable.
Meaning this headlight might be encapsulated
where you cannot access that LED to replace it.
That could be true, but as the textures alluded to,
pop up the fuses.
Maybe there's a model at both end of the back of it.
There's something there.
So I would definitely spend the time,
have somebody get the winding diagram,
move it out, make sure that we have
good power ground signal to that headlight assembly.
If we do have all those items, we know it's faulty
and you might be able to find a used one.
I don't know.
You'll have to investigate a little bit further there.
Make sure it's non-programmable.
There's a lot more hoops to jump through
with some of these tasks that used to be so simple.
Used to be able to open the hood,
pull the bubble out the back,
put a new one in and be back on the road.
But the way cars are designed these days,
it's not always that easy.
So do a little more research.
Maybe you'll find a simpler process there,
but ultimately you might end up needing
that whole headlight assembly.
Yeah, that happened to my wife's vehicle.
I remember she hit something in the winter time,
slid in and damaged that headlight.
And if you get the assembly on,
you had to hit old front end off,
the bumper and all that.
So yeah, I can see how it can add up for sure.
All right, let's look at this text.
2006, I'm sure, let's do this.
We've got, I don't want to leave the callers online too long.
George is calling it from Andover this morning.
Thank you, George.
What's your question for Nick?
Well, I have a question that I'm calling
for an older gentleman who has a,
we're on a 20 year old Lincoln.
And for some reason,
when the car sits for a day or two,
it just drains the battery down
and he gets out and jiggles a terminal connection there.
And it will start and he replaced the battery
about a month ago.
And it's still the same thing.
It just runs the battery down.
Any idea?
Well, that's not uncommon.
Not just that making model,
but a lot of different vehicles.
And what we need to do is put an amp meter on there
to determine where that power is going.
So obviously shut the vehicle off.
We all assume it, everything's off.
Well, behind the scenes, there's computers and modules
that might still be alive and drawing power.
If that's the case, that deal could sit over a night
over a couple of nights and wear that battery down.
So typically what we do is we determine
if there's a drain, parasitic drain out of the battery.
If the fact is, if there is one,
now we need to go to like the circuits.
The individual fuse is to determine which circuit is on.
Get the wine diagram, pinpoint that particular circuit
of that fuse.
Now we determine that fuse is powering which components.
And then you need to go to those components
and determine which one of those is drawing power when it's off.
So it can be a bit of a task.
Obviously it makes the models have more common failure points.
So we look at those first,
but it could be a couple of hours cost-wise to diagnose that.
But you might find out it's just a bad connection
or a bad switch.
It isn't necessarily a computer or something extremely expensive.
So I would say in that situation,
especially as the seasons are turning,
you need to have that figured out,
have that resolved because the last thing you want
is to have a dead battery on a cold morning.
And if it gets colder, that's harder on the battery also.
So you could prematurely have that battery fail too.
So a fully charged battery is a happy battery.
So tell your friend or keep that in mind
and get that problem fixed.
Very good. Thank you for the call, George.
I'm looking at a text and I think if you had the solution
to this problem, you could retire like yesterday.
Here it is. 2006 Toyota Camry parked on the street
for the third time in a year.
A rodent has chewed the fuel line
resulting in a costly repair of hundreds of dollars.
It was even wrapped in rodent tape this time
as the rubber line is soy-based.
Any suggestions how to prevent this from happening again?
Well, let's say the rodent tape had light.
Be careful what you put on there.
You know, you don't want stuff that's going to have
adverse effect on the line itself.
There are outfits in town that can make lines.
Maybe they can make you a line out of a different product.
You know, it depends on the clips and the fittings.
If it's molded, there's a lot of variables there.
Maybe someone that corrugated plastic, you could wrap it in.
You know, there's probably a couple of different options
to try that aren't wholly expensive.
So, you know, as I think about it,
maybe I'd see where it's located.
If they're not at the same spot,
this makes sure there's no debris, no nesting,
no place for them to hide.
And then that would probably take some of that corrugated plastic
tubing and put that over the pipe as another layer
to try to prevent them.
And hopefully that's just not soy-based.
So it's not attracting the critters
and maybe pull in more of that tape at the end
so they can't get in and hope for the best.
But yeah, I can be frustrated, you know,
that this time of year,
as rodents can make one heck of a mess inside our cars
and our houses for that matter.
Well, you guys, you and your crew,
see that a lot there at Lloyd's, don't you?
We do, you know.
And like I said, it's, you know,
I think you told me that the critters
start looking for their way in
in the towards the end of summer.
So they've been at it for a while now.
So, you know, if they've made a nest somewhere,
you know, you may be able to solve that problem.
If they don't get rid of the nest,
they're just going to come back.
So make sure, you know,
you fix the problem, then you don't want to fuel problem.
This makes any nest in the underbody somewhere there.
Not just mice.
I've seen squirrels do some mighty big damage.
That's a whole other issue.
All right, I'll tell you what.
Let's do this.
Let's take a quick break for a look at that weather forecast.
Come back with more of the show.
Keep in mind, Nick, we'll be with us till about 7.45.
You have a car care question.
Love to hear from you.
6-5-1-4-6-1-9-2-2-6.
Weather next here on News Talk 830-W-C-C-O.
Good morning.
Welcome back.
C-C-O's car care show.
Denny Long here along with ASC certified technician
from Lloyd's Automotive, Nick Stoffel.
Nick, we have some time before you take your leave today.
Bunch of text messages.
Let's see how many folks we can help out.
This is an interesting one to me.
The last two times this texture has gone through the car wash,
the windows come out badly.
You think it could be that the wax they use.
Also, what's the best way to clean them?
I wonder what the heck's going on there.
Yeah, that's strange.
Everyone's using the same car wash,
unless there's a common theme with everybody running through it.
I'm thinking that maybe there's something on your windshield
that's not good enough that's just kind of smearing.
So maybe get some Windex.
Or like you said, Denny, you're the car wash expert.
You probably know what product you could use
to clear that windshield up.
But I would probably try some Windex and a couple
clean paper towels or rags and see if you can't get
whatever that is off the windshield and then go for it again.
I use water, a drop of Dawn and white vinegar.
That seems to do pretty good stuff on that glass.
Now here's one I'm sure the listener might be able to find
the answer either to Google or their manual.
How often should the antifreeze in a vehicle be changed?
That's a great question and I would say it's more common
to see around that $100,000 mile interval.
You know, if you're old enough,
it used to be every other year, every third year.
But with the changes in technology, the vehicles,
there's less byproduct, less combustion making its way
into the coolant, so it lasts a lot longer.
Just like with hoses too, because the coolant is better
and lasts longer as do the hoses.
So we see with the advancements of technology
that some of these maintenance items,
which are very cost, I don't want to minimize that,
but they last longer.
So when you kind of figure it out,
if it lasts two or three times as long,
that might cost twice as much,
but it's pretty much the same value.
Yeah.
A texture says this, Nick,
my last oil change a few weeks ago,
it was leaking from the oil drain plug.
First question, is it common that the gasket
and the plug is checked each oil change?
And yesterday, Texter brought it to a drive-thru service
and asked them to check the plug.
They said it didn't have a gasket on it.
But that's something your technicians always use, right?
I presume.
Absolutely.
If there's a replaceable gasket on that drain plug,
it needs to be replaced.
We have, I think, up to maybe a couple different drawers
of different size and fitments
based on the making manufacturing engine.
So that is important because you don't want to have
that little drip coming from the drain plug,
which might not seem significant,
but if it drips a little here and there
over the course of several months,
you could end up blowing oil.
So we don't want that,
and we don't want oil on our grouch floor either, do we?
No, no, absolutely not.
All right. Good morning, Texter says.
My 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser screen goes blank
when I try to use the navigation screen.
It stays blank for about 10 minutes, then comes back on.
It must be like another screen, like the radio.
Any ideas what's going on?
Is there a question?
Thank you. Love the show.
Well, thanks for that.
Is that a tough one to hunt down?
What do you think?
No, I would suspect, you know,
it's a 2024, it's likely still under warranty.
There might be a way to reset it.
If you get into the settings,
there might be a way to put a default
back to original settings,
see if that does the trick.
You take it into the dealership
that might have some software updating.
You know, a lot of these things are computers.
There might be some fresh software
to resolve that problem.
Or, you know, unfortunately,
ultimately they might end up replacing the unit
if it is defective.
So I would get on their schedule
before you fall out of warranty
because you don't want to have a situation
where it's coming out of your pocket
because those units can be quite...
dollars.
So make that a priority,
get on the schedule,
see what they have to say,
give them the chance to get it fixed.
Okay, another texture says this, Nick.
How long should a thermostat last?
My daughter drives a 2008 Jeep Wrangler,
had the thermostat replaced last winter,
and now her heat doesn't work again.
Is it possible it's the thermostat again?
I guess it is possible it's defective,
not very likely.
I start to wonder, you know,
earlier they were acting on actuators
and switches and temp sensors.
So there's other items that control the heat also.
Obviously, you know, a little trick there
is that the vehicle does have a temperature gauge
for the engine temp.
If that engine temp is coming up to the right run temp
and you're not having heat,
that kind of eliminates that.
If you notice that the temperature is staying cold,
well, that might be a very good lead
in the clue to share it with the shop
and you bring it in.
So I would make a couple notes, once again,
where that critical time of the year
where the leaves are falling and the tempers are dropping,
so get on the schedule.
You don't want to be too far out
and have it get cold outside
and not have any good heat.
Maybe I'd just been lucky
with the vehicles I've owned for years,
but do you ever see your crews
see a lot of need for thermostats
needing to be replaced these days?
Honestly, not really.
I would say, keep in mind,
we drive our vehicles so much more than we used to,
but the cooling systems, 100,000 miles,
water pumps, oftentimes we do a thermostat
or we will do a thermostat
if there's an overheating situation.
Have that become the weak point
because it got too hot.
So usually that's replaced upon a repair
that involves some sort of overheating
or significant leak.
I'm looking at what I think
is really a good question.
Tester says I do a lot of short trips each week,
grocery store, church, things like that.
How often and how long
should I drive my car to keep the battery fully charged?
Well, we get a lot of those questions too.
You know, we have a lot of seniors
that maybe live in a community
where they have most of their needs,
except for they do drive once a week to mass
or every couple of weeks to the grocery store.
And based on their comfort,
my suggestion usually is every so often,
take the long way.
You know, you might only live a couple blocks away,
but if you're comfortable,
you can take the longer way,
you know, give a few extra minutes,
allow that engine to fully heat up,
allow that exhaust to burn up
with all that condensation,
allow those brakes to clean up.
I think that goes a long ways.
No, I'm not telling you to go somewhere
where you're not comfortable
or you don't wear your headache,
but if it's somewhere where you're comfortable,
take the long way,
give that car a chance to warm up
and clean some things up.
Nick, it doesn't say what type of vehicle
it is, it's just a general question
about what sounds might wheel bearings make
if they're going bad.
Typically it's like a humming type sound
and you'll notice that the frequency
will change in two situations
as you increase the speed
that humming will increase
and the load,
meaning as you, you know,
you're going down the road
and your vehicle might go to the left
or to the right a little bit,
you might notice that that humming
noise changing with that.
And the reason is,
as that bearing has failed,
you add a little more weight
or a little load to it
and that's going to change the load
on that bearing,
allow that roller to vibrate a little bit
more, making more noise.
So if you notice a humming noise
increases with speed
and as you kind of sway left or right
a little bit,
you can use a pinpoint
which location that bearing is at.
All right, Texter says,
I think I may have overfilled
my oil changing the oil.
What can happen?
Significantly overfilled oil
is just as bad as low on oil.
You need to get that right
within the marks on the stick.
If it's a digital readout,
make sure it's at the full level.
I would tell this person,
if you don't know how far over you are,
start over.
You don't have to,
you can reuse the oil,
collect it back in the container,
figure out the exact amount
that should be in there,
take it all back out,
put it back in at the right level,
then we have a piece of mine.
You get that oil slapping around
when it's too full.
It's really hard on the crankshaft
and like the internal combustion
parts of the engine.
So it's almost as bad
as being low on oil.
You don't want that either,
so get that adjusted
to the right level.
Well, that's a good point.
At least you don't have to throw out
or recycle the oil that you just put in.
You just collect it
in a good, clean container
and put it back in.
All right, good point.
Good question.
