Welcome back to EV News Daily.
Coming up today, Volvo's ES90 enters production.
Mercedes-GLC interior features a wild screen
and the USA raids Hyundai's factory.
Plus stay tuned, later in the show I'll tell you
which automaker is the latest to gain access to
the Tesla Supercharger Network.
Well, good morning, good afternoon or good evening.
In fact, wherever you are in the world,
welcome to EV News Daily,
your trusted source of EV information
for Saturday, 6th of September.
I'm Martin Lee and I go through every EV story

We'll start with a headline story
and Volvo has been doing good business lately in SUVs,
but a return to sedans,
as now they've begun ES90 production in Chengdu in China
with first customer deliveries in Europe
due before the end of the year.
Unfailed in March, the ES90 has the STSPA2 platform
underpinnings, debuting last year in the EX90.
That's the big SUV.
Well, the ES90 is sold in two versions,
rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
So, rear-wheel drive,
333 horsepower, 650 kilometers WLTP,
all-wheel drive up to 680 horsepower
and 700 kilometers variance.
Battery size is two batteries, actually, in this,
88 to 106.
Thanks to the 800-volt architecture,
it supports ultra-fast DC charging
and up to 350 kilowatts.
I'm going to double-check on all my sources on that.
I've seen it written as both 300.
Thomas in Autoguffel, brilliant automotive journalist,
a great YouTube channel.
They said it's going to be 300 or maybe 350
and it's still a little bit fuzzy to be honest.
I still can't get a definitive answer,
but either way, that's good.
350 kilowatts would be right up there
with the very best at the moment at least.
But, look, either way, it's a really big number.
For both batteries, that means 10 to 80
is going to be 20 minutes.
186 miles added in 10 minutes.
I love that miles per minute metric
or a 10-minute stop.
How far can I go in 10 minutes stopping?
That's 186 miles.
Volvo themselves say this is shape-shifting.
They don't describe it as a saloon nor a fastback.
They say it has hints of an SUV
as it has 18 centimeters or 7 inches of ground clearance.
I'm a simpleton, so I say it's a big Volvo saloon or sedan.
It just sits up a little bit
like a Polestar 2 sits up a little bit
with a fastback opening for maximum flexibility
when you want to throw open the boot
or get those back seats folded flat, actually,
for a really big load space.
They've also painted the lower sills along the side of the car
in black.
Colour is black gloss, actually, in some of the photos.
Depending on the colour of the body that you choose,
if it's highly contrasting,
like a lighter-coloured car,
it does appear from a distance as well
because the sills are quite a lot lower part of the doors.
Actually, the side doors are painted black.
It looks like it's riding higher
than perhaps it really does.
It's also 5 meters in length, 3.1 meter wheelbase,
a really long vehicle.
A lot of that has gone into the rear room
and the most aerodynamic Volvo ever made.
0.25 cd drag coefficient,
which isn't stunning by modern EV standards,
but to get more slippery,
you have to do something like the Mercedes-Benz EQS,
for instance, which they've said,
look, we should have stuck with S-Class styling
and not gone super slippery.
So I think really good compromise here from Volvo
because it looks like a Volvo
and it provides more ground clearance,
perhaps harking back to Volvo all-road editions
of their wagons.
Volvo, they still sell cross-country versions,
by the way, of their SUV.
So again, looking like a little more of a lifted vehicle,
but it's not.
Volvo's safety and comfort are prioritised.
Next-gen driver assistance.
It's got the taxi light, the LiDAR,
on the little roof bubble.
Radar and an all-glass sunroof
with the electro-chromatic changing
of the shades.
Adaptive air suspension, so it'll go up and down
as it needs to.
It runs on Google, like recent Volvos and Pulsars.
And we'll have Gemini.
That's their AI product,
which actually I've been using quite a bit lately
because I pay for their Google One product,
which comes with AI.
I pay for it for storage and access to the Google Apps
and all the audio files from this podcast
get stored on both OneDrive and Google.
Oh, and probably some Apple stuff,
because my MacBook backs up automatically.
But I pay for that.
And with that comes their Gemini AI.
I've got to say it's very, very good.
A lot of the AI stuff is very, very good these days.
But you can just talk to it in very human language.
Hopefully you can talk to the car normally,
whether that's finding directions,
or saying that you're hungry,
where's the nearest burger place or something,
and also, you know,
tell them they see eaters on or something like that.
So, order books are open in several European markets.
Delivery starting later this year.
In Germany, pricing starts at 68,000.
Availability in key Asia-Pacific markets
will follow shortly.
And I certainly think for the rear as well,
that perhaps China has been considered as well,
because the rear seats are heated, ventilated,
loads of room, they recline,
they're all electrically adjustable as well.
A big center rear console that folds down with storage,
big rear screen as well.
So, all the rear seat controls are controllable.
So, I think with an eye on the Chinese market,
where perhaps you might be driven a little more,
or your rear passenger,
you might be in the back of the car
more than you're driving it.
And so, very luxurious vehicle.
Not wildly priced, by the way.
And it won't be wildly successful,
because it's not an SUV,
and everybody wants one of those at the moment.
But boy, I mean, just for my personal preferences,
everyone's different subjective,
but I really, really like the look of this.
I hope they sell enough of them to consider it a success.
Let's move on.
Mercedes has shown off the interior of its GLC EV.
The head of the vehicle's debut
in the next couple of days at the IAA.
Munich Auto Show.
It's an SUV, the GLC,
and it shows off Mercedes-Benz's latest, greatest hyperscreen.
It spans pillar to pillar, A pillar to A pillar.
The display is 39.1 inches.
It's a meter.
Let's face it, it's a meter wide.
The largest screen the company has installed
in a production vehicle,
backlit by a thousand individual LEDs
and supporting zones, specific dimming.
The interior is redesigned,
rather than borrowed from the GLC gas-powered version,
which is still a very nice place to be.
The doors use new curvia seat adjuster switches.
The dashboard blends into the center console
and is flanked by two circular air vents
with two rectangular vents in the center.
The center console includes a cubby-sized hole
for the two wireless phone chargers,
a smaller row of buttons,
a volume control wheel,
two little cup holders,
and just screen.
Screen as far as the eye can see.
I have a sneaky feeling
that we're going to get over this hump,
this trend in big screens.
I don't feel that big screens are very luxurious personally.
Maybe again,
maybe an eye on the Chinese market
where high-tech is very important.
Luxury to me,
luxury to me feels like material choice
about feeling like it's special.
Interacting with the car in,
you know, when you touch everything,
it just feels nice,
whether it's the kind of the metallic
or the metal switches,
everything's weighty.
That to me,
there's what defines luxury
and just having screen
in front of you,
a massive piece of glass.
I'm not sure that,
see, Rolls Royce isn't Bentley's following that.
Mercedes clearly know
they're doing their business
better than an idiot podcaster.
So good luck there.
But yeah, you can obviously have it
without the hyperscreen
and that's exactly how I would,
how I would spec the car.
Now, South Korea just said
that it regrets the US immigration raid.
It's about as strong
as international relations,
corporate speak goes, isn't it?
We regret the US raiding our factory.
US immigration officials
led the detention
of over 300 Korean citizens
at Hyundai Motor Group and LG's
new Georgia facility.
Those detained reportedly
included employees of Hyundai Affiliates,
LG headquarters staff in the US
on business and employees
of partner firms on business trips.
Seoul's Ministry of Foreign Affairs
said US law enforcement actions
should not disrupt the business operations
of Korean companies.
The ministry dispatched consuls
from the Korean embassy in Washington
and the consulate general in Atlanta
and set up a task force on site.
Production had to stop the facility.
The response followed the operation
by US immigration authorities at the site
where Hyundai and LG Energy Solutions
are jointly building a new battery plant
next to Hyundai's manufacturing facility.
Agents held hundreds of factory workers
until they could be verified.
Those whose status was unconfirmed
and often zip ties and transferred
to a detention facility,
many of the Koreans taken away
were in the US on short-term business visas,
the Visa Waiver Program,
or the Electronic System for Travel Authorization.
Immigration authorities initially determined
that the presence at the site of those people
constituted activities inconsistent
with the purpose of their stay.
Yeah, I hope nobody was there
on like a tourist visa
or popping over for a business meeting
or something like that.
In my old life running when I worked in radio,
we did some outside broadcasts in the US.
The easiest thing would have been to do
for me to stick my presenters
on a plane
and just go into the country
and do the little thing they had to do,
but you can't risk that,
so the paperwork involved
and that would have been maybe
for a two or three hour broadcast,
maybe we had corporate sponsors,
many once, we went over into an outside broadcast,
the break for show from America,
and the paperwork involved
in going for meetings
at the American Embassy
or the consulate in London
to do all the paperwork
of why are you entering the country
on a working visa and whatnot.
It was significant,
but you have to do it
if you're going to go to the US and work.
Hopefully all their paperwork is in order.
I have experience of that myself,
and don't get me wrong,
easiest thing would have been to do,
book that plane ticket,
stick people on the plane,
we're going to go to Disney on holiday,
but I then can't have my staff members
detained
had they been found working,
and of course it was a sponsored thing
by American companies bringing this over and whatnot,
so it's fabulously difficult, isn't it,
but hundreds of people being
dragged away in handcuffs,
not great, not great.
Lots to talk about in the podcast soon.

Alright, welcome back to the podcast.
Now, BMW showed off
their iX3
yesterday. I gave you all the full details.
And on stage,
I forgot to mention yesterday, they also bought out
the i3. Now, not the i3 that you,
and I think the i3 is, this is the new
3-series, the sedan.
We first saw it as the vision
Neuerklasse concept, evolving from that in 2023.
The second model
in the Neuerklasse range.
It'll be the first 3-series-sized
electric model BMW offers in Europe
on arrival next year, the smallest EV
in the lineup. It revives
the i3 name last seen on the vehicle
that ended 3 years ago.
The i3 and iX3, leading the wider
rollout at BMW, where the chairman, Oliver
Zipser, saying the brand
will launch 40
40 new and updated models
by the end of 2027.
That i3, by the way,
looked pretty production ready, even though it had
some camouflage on ways out next year.
So that program is heading
towards the end of it. The iX3,
if you haven't heard yesterday's podcast, 500 miles
of range, 400 kilowatt DC fast charging.
That is a beast.
Wow.
Sweden's numbers are in, and last month in
August, Sweden was up to
59%, we'll call it 60,
we're all friends here, 60%
EV market share,
plug-in market share, and that is
split between 34%
BEV
and about 25.5%
plug-in hybrid. So a big shift
towards pure BEVs.
Last year it was 56.
So Sweden last year, 56, now in
August 59, actually year
to date is even better.
It's 61.1% year
to date to the end of August.
35%
BEV share.
The best-selling BEV models
were the Volvo EX40,
fifth month in a row in Sweden.
You won't be surprised here. VW ID
7 and Kia EV3
next. So, you know, it's not Norway
figures, but hey, 60%
is a huge, huge number
for plug-ins. The UK
numbers are out for August as well, and
continued growth. Battery
electric vehicles, pure BEVs,
26.5% of all
new cars registered. Obviously
we have the mandate here. And many of the
carmakers have been very vocal.
Some of the carmakers, Stellantis
fought really hard. Ford fought really
hard against mandates in the UK.
It's inconvenient. It hurts profits.
No one likes being told
what to do. And we were always, you know, we were told
it won't work. We can't hit
the targets. Well, no one as far as we know
paid a fine last year for
missing. And they probably won't do again
this year, where the number
goes up again to 28%. And look, we're
at 26.5%. So we're getting
really, really close. So
sometimes
a little bit of regulation
helps nudge
industries and economies in the right direction.
Year-to-dates, almost
300,000
new EVs registered. So I talked about
Sweden being a big market, but yeah, the
numbers are in the hundreds. The UK
is, along with Germany, it flip-flops
easily Europe's
biggest EV markets.
And the
EVs hold
a 22% market share year-to-date
August, though, 26.5%.
And if you're thinking, well, yeah,
you've juiced the goose there, haven't you? Because
you got the new grant. Yeah, but the grant
didn't kick in. It was announced earlier
in the summer, but the new government grant
only eligible models
confirmed in August. And
so everyone was saying
in August, like, no one's going to be buying an EV
because we knew that the grant
was incoming. And yet we didn't
know which cars were going to get it. They were
announcing the list piecemeal. And so
there was a lot of concern
that no EV, everyone was just going to hold fire
until September. Look, they didn't do that.
Everyone still went and bought their EVs. 35
models are now on the government list. Up
to 3,750 pounds off. That's the top tier
for vehicles like the little Ford
Puma.
Also, registration data in the UK
found that Tesla had a
good month. Tesla, boy,
they needed some good news in
2025.
July was a stinker
but monthly numbers bounce around
for Tesla. And so
from going from a thousand vehicles to just over
3,000 vehicles, that's
their second best August on record
in this country.
Tesla is still down
6% year over year on the
first six, seven
months of the year. And so, you know, down
but not down by those double digits
we've seen in mainland Europe, like
30, 40, 50%. So the UK
a little more resilient for Tesla.
Boy, do they need the good news. But they've also
been very, very aggressively discounting
40% discounts on
leases in the
UK. And there is
I gather
issues around storage
space. Last time I was
at the top floor of IKEA having my veggie
meatballs in Southampton and I
looked down at the Tesla storage facility.
It was packed. And admittedly, you know, the next
day it could be empty because it clears out. But
there was a lot of vehicles
sitting there waiting to find homes.
Tesla also set a US
sales record.
Tesla sold in August
55,000 vehicles in the United States.
That's the best of the year again
so far. According to this, not Tesla numbers.
They don't do monthly's. Motor intelligence
estimates show
that they rose 4.4%.
Again, Tesla's been after some good
news in the United States
desperately. And
finally got some coming through
on the company's earnings call
last time out, the CFO
said they had a limited supply of vehicles
in the US for the quarter. But the good news
is with the $7,500 federal
tax credit, if you go to your
dealer, whatever car you're buying
and put the money down and get a signed
contract to buy the vehicle
you don't have to take delivery by
September 30th. Okay, so you've got some breathing
room. There must
be some, you know, an end date to it.
But you can still get the big discount
off the new cars even
if they can't quite deliver it. That's good news for Tesla
which was running low on inventory
and some of the other
car makers had quite a lot of inventory
in local dealerships and so perhaps doesn't
benefit them so much. But that's a good bit of
news. Next in the news, Tesla has
filed paperwork to build a delivery
center, a customer delivery center
at Giga, Texas. This is really cool.
Back in the day, like maybe 10 years ago
Tesla used to do factory
tours for fans and then
the company's too big and too many Tesla fans
these days to do that. But certainly if you're buying
a new Tesla, I think a lot of people
would like to go to Giga, Texas and actually
pick the vehicle up from where it was
made. Buying a car is a big deal.
It's a big purchase and
it's not once in a lifetime
but buying a new car is a really special
moment and
you know, back in the day again
I remember Tesla showrooms here
in the UK would do the full
red silk cloth treatment.
The staff would come out. They'd whip the cloth
off your brand new Model S. All the staff
would applaud and stuff like that. Clearly
Tesla's way too big to do that now.
It can be these days
not quite so glamorous. You go to Southampton
Docks and they go, yeah, yours is the dirty
one over there. Hop it. It's not quite
the same as it used to be, is it? And so
I think this is cool. Permits have gone
in for Giga, Texas to have a new
customer delivery center
at the end of line facility.
So again, it suits them, doesn't it? The car can roll
off the production line and they give you the
keys. And I think for many people as well
that'd be a really cool thing to do
to go and get your car from them. Rivian
and VW are
ratcheting up their joint venture
Project The Hiring in Toronto
actually. The joint
venture between the US EV maker and the German
car maker, putting out their dev teams
this time in Toronto. The hiring
Android software engineers, simulation
software engineers and embedded software
engineers. Working on the infotainment
development system. Volkswagen
agreed to invest $6 billion
and to adopt Rivian's
architecture of putting vehicles together
the Zonal architecture for
future VW Group projects.
Genesis GV90
is their top end big
luxurious vehicle. Production starts
next year and now they're showing it off
at flagship brand spaces
like Genesis House in New York City
they call them
the concept the Neolun
concept but we think it'll be very similar
to the GV90 has the coach doors
so the front door opens one way
and then the back door opens the other
like a BMW i3
they have a different name for those which I'm not too keen on
we'll call them coach doors. The GV90
will be built on Hyundai's new platform
the EM platform which they say is
450% improvement on driving range
well that's amazing because
Hyundai's and Kia's go pretty far already
advanced level 3 autonomy
pricing starting around $100,000
for the first vehicle from Genesis
on that. Porsche
is confirming wireless EV charging for the new
Cayenne due to launch next year
this is really smart from Porsche because
wireless charging is not essential
but it's a nice thing to have
and it works pretty well these days
and a lot of Porsche customers
in terms of the percentage price
of the purchase price
it won't be a huge addition
that's going to be like $4,000-$5,000
of course but if you're buying a new Cayenne
and you want a wireless charging
pad in your garage or
wherever you park your car
and maybe you don't want a wallbox on the side
of your house or your garage maybe you don't want that
that furniture of a big
EV charger just sitting there
well Porsche will give you the option now
they're launching it next year
it's 11 kilowatt inductive
system it's a base plate
that sits on the ground obviously
and no wallbox
no control unit required
90% efficiency which still
blows my mind how can you charge a car that quickly
and a 90% efficiency
it's about the same as plugging in which still blows my mind
the receiver unit sits on the vehicle
underbody between the front wheels
the vehicle has to be parked over the floor plate
and then it's like charging your mobile
phone it just happens
and the gap is
about an inch or a centimeter
of course the Cayenne has air suspension
and it will lower itself down
automatically to get as close
as possible
dedicated view in the surround view parking
function helps you align hasn't got to be
absolutely perfect like the old systems
but when it's
perfectly aligned
charging will start automatically
and so that might be a faff that
people don't want to bother with they might just think
I want to just pull into my driveway wherever
and I'll just plug the car in and that's fine
and honestly it is or they might think
no it's a toy, it's cool, it's a thing to play with
I want it, it looks nice
or for whatever reason
and honestly Porsche Cayenne customers can probably
afford to make that decision
they use a magnetic field that transmits a coil
made of copper and ferrites in the base plate
carry alternating current
generating the field
Porsche uses ultra wideband technology
to determine the vehicle's relative position over the plate
and the vehicle's secondary coil
which is the receiver
the magnetic field induces AC
which a rectifier converts to DC
for the big battery
and finally staying with Porsche they say
their electric models can now charge at Tesla
superchargers starting
on Tuesday next week
it'll add NACS ports
or J3400 now it's a standard to future
EVs and in the meantime
will support customers with adapters
the rollout is a soft launch
they say requires the Tesla smartphone app
to start the sessions and then in time
over many months
will enable charging via the MyPorsche app
and plug and charge as well
at some supercharger sites
Porsche targeting this year
for NACS port integration
but looks like the new Cayenne
coming next year will be the first one
