Now, how long range should long-range plug-in hybrids be?

Volvo say they have the answer.

And it's about 124 miles.

Volvo has reintroduced the XC70 name.

And they've brought it back with the plug-in hybrid SUV.

Electric only range of 124 miles, that's a neat 200 kilometers.

Now, the XC70 sits below the XC90.

And it's SUV lineup and shares design features with both the electric version, the EX90 and the XC90.

So, can you get it not just yet?

The XC70 first launches in China, then it will come to Europe.

Volvo's new, old, new CEO, Hakan Samuelson, calling the XC70 a cornerstone of their electrified product portfolio.

It uses an updated platform, the SMA platform.

The XC70 will fast charge to 80% in 23 minutes.

It supports bidirectional charging.

Chinese filings show the powertrain with a 1.5-liter engine, 160 horsepower on that, and an electric motor with a 40 kilowatt-hour battery.

Production has started in China, pre-orders are open there, European release date not confirmed.

So, how much range is enough range?

Now, I've long argued for 100 miles to be a kind of arbitrary benchmark.

So, things like no longer selling zero emission vehicles in the UK.

2030 is the new date again.

2035 was our old date, matching Europe.

And so, the politicians here a couple of years ago said,

well, we'll ban vehicles that don't have a good amount of range on electric power.

And so, we all said, great.

And what is that?

And they went, they scratched their heads and said, we'll get back to you and never did.

And that still hasn't been decided.

It simply is vehicles that are not purely combustion are going to be banned.

But let's face it, that's not hard to add a tiny teeny weeny battery Toyota style to your hybrids and call it an electrified vehicle.

So, I long argued that actually, if you had an EV, a plug-in hybrid vehicle that could do 100 miles of range,

that should qualify as being as good as a zero emission vehicle for the either 2030 or 2035 bans.

But wow, 124 miles, 200 kilometers, a battery twice the size as the biggest as the battery I had in my first EV.

That's a big battery, 40 kilowatt hours.

It's a big vehicle, actually 70 after all, it's got a lot of heft to carry around.

But still, is it?

Oh, I can't believe I'm going to say this to you.

Is it almost too much electric range?

Well, Volvo agree, which is why they'll sell you one with a 20 kilowatt hour battery if you want.

But I also say, if you can get the range, then you should get the range.

With 124 miles of battery, I'm not sure I'd ever visit the petrol station.

Maybe for people who just feel like they need that safety net, that could be a good vehicle.

Now, Turkish automaker Tog is going to bring their electric vehicles to Germany for the IAA show in Munich.

The company will display an SUV called the T10X and a sedan called the T10F.

The T10X has been sold in Turkey for the last two years.

It starts about 41,000 euros.

German prices will be announced to IAA.

The sedan, the T10F, now being tested, will launch in Turkey and Germany next year.

Tog is Turkey's car company and will reveal the production version for the first time in Munich.

Technical details under wraps.

Tog will also take part in the open space at Koenigsplatz, that's how I say it,

where visitors can test drive vehicles.

In Turkey, Tog sold almost 70,000 of the T10Xs in the first half of this year.

They're number two, I think, in the market in Turkey.

They love their domestic car industry there.

Now, a new Chinese brand coming to the UK, Chang'an, is one of China's largest and oldest car makers.

Coming to the UK next month, expanding in Europe, the first model is the D-PAL S07, or just S7 or SO7.

I don't know, but the D-PAL S7 is an electric SUV designed by a team in Italy.

It'll cost 39,990.

The D-PAL S07 has 295 miles of WLTP range, 80 kilowatt-hour battery, rear-wheel motor,

160 kilowatt motor on that, and 7.9 seconds, 0 to 62.

Standard features include a heat pump, always useful here, keyless entry, heated seats,

and a big 15.6-inch infotainment screen.

Chang'an's UK launch partners are the dealer network's lookers, Ancaster, and Parks.

20 locations to start with, 30 by the end of the year, sorry, 30 more by the end of the year to make 50.

And Chang'an calling the UK a primary market for Chang'an, saying they're launching

both a new car and a full support team.

Here, of course, no Chinese tariffs.

We didn't follow EU since Brexit, didn't have to.

And so no tariffs over and above on those Chinese vehicles.

Now, the Ford Puma Gen E and the E-Torneo are going to get the full UK grant.

This is huge news because the UK government bought back the grant of £3,750

if you met the environmental standards and then everybody put their applications in, and nobody did.

So until now, it's been the lower amounts of £1,500.

But today, I can tell you, the first two vehicles have been confirmed,

and it's Ford have crossed the line first to get the full 3,750 off their EVs because of where they're made.

The Ford Puma Gen E and the Ford E-Torneo Courier are the first vehicles to get the full £3,750 off.

So Puma Gen E now starts at £26,245.

That is altogether a sensible price, dare I say.

It's the price Ford probably should have priced it at pre-grant, if that makes sense.

Because the Puma is not an impressive vehicle from an EV perspective.

I'm glad it exists, and Puma is Ford's most popular vehicle here, so it's important it goes electric.

The Gen E is now £345 cheaper than the Puma Hybrid.

By the way, the E-Torneo Courier starts at £28,440.

So how do they get it? Well, they met strict government sustainability rules governing how cars are made

and the manufacturers practices Ford qualified by making sure it's factory in Romania, by the way,

not in the UK in case you were wondering, which makes the batteries and assembles the vehicles

met strict environmental rules. The plan also only uses renewable energy.

Other vehicles like the Peugeot E-308, newly designed, new powertrain in that, very, very nice.

The Peugeot E-408, a bit of a sleeper hit, by the way, may I say.

Always worth looking at the E-408. It's got the new powertrain that goes in that new E-308 refresh

one. So the bigger battery, more range, more efficient motors from Stellantis at motorway speeds,

not Tesla efficient and still a bit lacking, but that E-408 is a really interesting vehicle.

The DS3 E-Tents, the DS number four, they all get the lower level of the Grant.

26 models now have the Grant scheme here. Okay, Opel is going to show off two global premieres

at the IAAA show in Munich. They need a bit of good press at the minute because Opel recently

backed away from their 100% electric future, which is fine. Everyone's doing this at their own

pace. Everyone's running their own race. But Opel were one of the ones that came out with

an aggressive all-electric deadline and have now had to walk it back. So they'll debut

two new global premieres at IAAA next month, the Corsa GSE Vision Grant Charisma Concept

and the new Mocha GSE. They'll show the Grandland Electric all-wheel drive. Opel's first all-electric

all-wheel drive vehicle available to order now. The Corsa GSE Vision Grant Charisma

previews Opel's future GSE lineup. This concept is 800 horsepower, 0-62 in two seconds,

they say, but they don't really have to prove it with the concept, do they? Now, Genesis GV60 has

been spotted. The GV60 Magma, I should point out on the Nürburgring ahead of launch. Genesis is

launching the Magma version of the GV60. It's first electric car from their new high-performance

sub-brand, the GV60 Magma. I paid at the New York Auto Show a year and a half ago

as the Neolun, alongside the Neolun concept. The GV60 Magma is physically wider

and it's lower than a GV60. Larger, lower air intakes, more aggressive look. It cools the batteries

and the drive motors. More, it's got more high-performance modes as well. There are other

high-performance cars from the same stable, like the Arnick 6N and, of course, the Arnick 5N

as well. The Kiri V6 GT. The GV60 Magma will have over 600 horsepower, 447 kilowatts.

Genesis will launch the GV60 Magma later this year in Korea. Do they need to? Well,

they know their business better than I do. I think I could make an argument that Genesis

is struggling to cut through with the wider public, at least, about what Genesis really stands for

and now going super sporty with a Magma sub-brand and got a big job to do. A lot of heavy

lifting. Big job to do to communicate even what the Genesis brand stands for in an electric

future, let alone starting to do sporty sub-brand spin-offs. I'm sure they're on the case. Now,

we've got to talk about Porsche McCann very soon after the break. A Kia is chipping in on the EU

So for 2026, the Porsche Macan EV is adding new features. It gets a new digital key so drivers

can use Apple or Android so you can use your phone as a key. Unlock and start the car.

Digital key can be shared with seven people. The parking assistant is improved now showing

virtual views through the hood camera using more angles. The new trained parking mode lets

the Macan EV park itself in preset spots like garages or workplace spaces after the user records

of the routine. It'll copy it and do it again and again. Rinse and repeat if you like. Reverse

Assist allows automatic reversing in a similar pre-recorded situation. There is now an Air

Console app giving you access to games you can play with a smartphone or Bluetooth controller.

You can play together with other passengers. But the screen is hidden from the driver

if the car is moving and so it should be. A new AI-powered voice pilot assistant will

understand real language. I haven't got to use the exact phrases. Other updates include

new door sill trim options, LED courtesy lights, new and improved nav as well. Maximum towing

is up by 500 kilograms or 1,100 pounds. The Macan will tow 5,500 pounds or 2,500

kilograms. Good for caravan towing. Available very soon on a 2026 model year for the Macan.

Kia is next in the news. Remaining confident on the E2035 deadline in the European Union

after Mercedes and the head of Mercedes, Ola Colenius, who is also the president

of the Car Manufacturers Association, the ASEA, wrote to the EU commissioner,

the Ursula von der Leyen, saying that it's now unthinkable that the car industry could possibly

hit 2035 as a zero emission deadline in 10 years time. Kia says it will fully meet the 2035 rule.

And you know, so it should. It's 10 years away. There's a pipeline of great EVs coming.

The car industry in the last 10 years is wildly different than 2015. 2035 is

so far away. I know it doesn't seem it to the car industry who work on 10, 20 year timelines

as a kind of an everyday kind of thing. But still, 10 years in EV development. It's just,

the cars that you and I drive and the prices will pay for them in 2035.

We can't even imagine at the moment. Kia for its part says, yep, we agree. We are

fully ready for 2035 and the ban on pure combustion vehicles. CEO of Kia Europe,

Mark Hedrich, saying, and I quote, we have a plan to achieve 100% compliance in 2035 end quote.

And that view differs from the Car Makers Association. They recently told the European

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, it's not feasible to set a 2035 deadline.

Kia disagree. And Mr. Hedrick points out that the head of Mercedes Benz,

CEO Ola Kalenius, who also heads up, like I say, the Car Makers Association.

This is the same guy who a few years ago promised his company would only sell EVs by 2030.

Woo, burn. Okay. And actually, a fair point. Nobody minds if you change your strategy.

Nobody minds if you react to the market. Nobody minds if you change your timelines.

Nobody wants CEOs to talk out both sides of their mouth.

Now, let me explain that. I don't want to be really mean. So I saw today,

Ford put out a press release saying, dump the pump, go for the new Puma Gen E,

3,750 pounds off the future's electric. But at the same time,

Ford really want you to buy their combustion cars because that's how they're making money.

And all the existing car companies have this really weird tightrope where they have to

balance saying buy an EV because EVs are better because they are. But also saying,

but that doesn't mean you shouldn't buy combustion stuff if you want one. I mean,

if you hate EVs, yes, I do. EVs suck. Please buy one of our hybrid cars. But also we love EVs.

So it's really difficult. We just want them to just try and do that in a in the best way

possible. You know, I understand why their press release today said dump the pump with

Ford. Ford. And you're like, I get it. But at the same time, you say something different. So which

one is it? And so, you know, I understand why Kia are a bit spiky towards the head of Mercedes there

because Kia is investing 125 million in its Slovakian plant to make the EV4, EV2 there.

They have a load of new EVs in their pipeline. Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, deeply impressive what

they've doing there, but their money where their mouth is and their promises. And they say,

we go and be ready. Now let's move on. First bus, one of the UK's main bus operators. We'll open a

new battery storage facility next month at its Hoford depot in Hampshire. This facility will

store extra energy for two purposes, surplus power to the electric grid and supplying electricity

to their 1200 EV buses in the fleet. First bus says the battery system will start up with

three repurposed bus batteries and a total storage of a megawatt. The company will

add more storage by recycling more of their old bus batteries as they come out of service.

In addition, First Bus plans to start building a larger battery storage system. And that's going

to be their Aberdeen depot. That's in Scotland before the end of the year. This work follows

investment by First Group, the parent company of First Bus, and alongside Palmer Energy,

a company that specializes in battery storage systems. First Bus, like I say, have 1200

diesel buses replaced already with electric ones. Now, let's go and talk about an oil company,

Shell, launching an electric vehicle charging network in Europe for heavy duty fleet operators.

The network combines Shell recharge sites, partner charging locations, semi-public depot

networks and even private stations that offer regulated third party access on the platform.

The network aims to solve public charging shortages and reduce high upfront costs

for depot charging. Shell's platform provides tailored charging equipment, software and energy

management support, they say, and pricing options to help fleet operators lower their energy costs.

With this network, fleet managers can electrify their fleets without buying

depot charging equipment themselves. They can tap into Shell's ecosystem

and use other people's hardware. It seems like a very good idea for using any spare capacity.

Tim Hortons working with Quebec based Flow will install EV fast charging stations at 100

of the Tim Horton Canadian restaurants by 2028. The goal is to have charges in all 10 provinces

so customers can charge coast to coast. The rollout started in Regina where the first

charges are now open to the public by the end of 2025 up to 13 restaurants will have fast

charges growing to 50 by next year. Each site will usually have four charging ports. The

charges will be Flow Ultra stations. They have 260 kilowatt ports on a total of 320 kilowatts

on the hardware. And let's talk a little bit about Tesla Mate servers story going around today.

A founder of a security company called SwordSec, this person found 1300 completely

unsecured Tesla Mate dashboards online using what they say was just basic internet scanning

tools. Now, from what I understand, Tesla Mate is free open source software that logs and

displays Tesla vehicle data, your charging habits, temperature, battery health, speed,

trip history, even locations. So it's you know, there is personal stuff in there and the tool

helps Tesla drivers. But if you don't properly secure it, your data can be exposed in a blog

post. SwordSec said that they can access all the data on unprotected Tesla Mate servers,

including where your vehicle is. In fact, the chap, the founder of SwordSec even created a map

showing where the cars are in the US. No authentication or security. He had the same data

control as the actual owners. He advised Tesla Mate servers should have at least basic username

and password protection, be limited to trusted IP addresses, or only be accessible on the

local network with a VPN for remote access. If you're a Tesla owner using Tesla Mate, the advice

is to quickly have a look about whether your system is secured. And of course, I think

many people using that would maybe presume security. I don't know, open source software,

I tend to trust it because you think whether communities are on the ruler over it. But

that's an interesting one. If I see a response from Tesla Mate making a comment or a comeback

or a reply, I'll let you know. And finally, Ferrari will share key details about Ferrari's

first fully electric car in October and the full reveal in 2026. This new model will reflect

Ferrari's racing history. They say their technical skill and their brand values. The CEO,

Benedetto Vigna, signed the electric Ferrari will be based on racing heritage using deep

technical knowledge and keep its true Ferrari identity. He said that he has contributed his own

technical experience to the team's strong work. Engineers are working on sound signatures for

the electric car to create a unique sound experience. Their goal is to trigger strong

emotions and mimic the famous sound of Ferrari's gas engines. Is that a problem? Not really.

I mean, I guess a large part of buying a Ferrari, I'll never know. But I guess a large part of it

is the experience, the exclusivity. Some Ferraris, you can't buy unless they reach out to you and

say, would you like to buy one of our cars? Could you have enough of them already? And so,

I guess if part of the experience is the sound that it makes, it's not for me,

but trying to put myself in somebody else's shoes, if you need to drive an EV that goes

vroom vroom putt putt, I mean, fill your boots, I guess. Ferrari trying to make sure they sell

the EVs that they do make, I'm sure they will. Ferrari says they will keep making internal

combustion engines. You know what? And of course they should, because if I see a petrol-powered

Ferrari, do I lose any sleep? Is it killing the whales and the dolphins? No, not really.

You know, do I want every Amazon delivery that I get, every bin lorry collection,

every trip to the shop that I make for a pint of milk to be on clean, green electric power?

Yeah, of course. Maybe sell a few thousand Ferraris than engine in. Does anyone care about that?

Well, I don't, but anyway, keep making engines if I review Ferrari. But there we go. Why rush to

electric? As long as we do the other 99.9% of the work, I'll be happy. Right, that's our
