Traction control is a system in cars that helps keep the wheels from spinning too much when you accelerate. It makes driving safer, especially on wet or icy roads.
All-wheel drive means that all four wheels of the car get power from the engine, which helps the car grip the road better. This is especially useful when driving in rain or snow.
Dual motor means the car has two electric motors, one for the front wheels and one for the back. This helps the car drive better and stay stable on the road.
Factory tires are the tires that are put on a car when you buy it new. Sometimes, they might not work well in certain weather, like snow, so people choose to replace them.
The Toyota Prius is a special car that uses both gas and electricity to help save on fuel. It's known for being very good for the environment and helps people drive longer distances without using a lot of gas.
The Hyundai Ioniq is a type of car that can run on electricity, gas, or both. It's designed to be very efficient and is popular for being eco-friendly.
Track mode is a special setting in some cars that makes them handle better for racing. It changes how the car responds to your driving to make it faster and more fun on a racetrack.
The Chevy Silverado is a popular truck that can carry heavy loads and is often used for work or towing. The 2013 version has a strong engine that helps it perform well in tough conditions.
The mass airflow sensor is a part of the car that checks how much air is going into the engine. If it gets dirty, it can make the car run poorly or use more fuel.
Fuel trim is how the car adjusts the amount of fuel it uses based on how much air is coming in. If it's not set right, the car can use too much or too little fuel.
A tune-up is when you check and fix different parts of a car's engine to make sure it runs well. It usually involves changing some parts like spark plugs.
Spark plugs are small parts in a car's engine that help start the engine by creating a spark. They need to be changed from time to time to keep the car running well.
Piston slap is a sound that happens when the piston in an engine hits the sides of the cylinder. It's more noticeable when the engine is cold and can mean there might be a problem with the engine's design or wear over time.
A leak down test checks if air is escaping from the engine's cylinders, which can show if there are problems with the engine parts. It's a way to see if the engine is healthy or if it needs repairs.
A lifter is a part of the engine that helps open and close the valves. If it doesn't work right, it can make noise and cause problems with how the engine runs.
Road Ready Wheels is a business that sells replacement wheels for cars. They offer wheels that look like the original ones that came with your car but usually cost less.
TPMS sensors are devices that check the air pressure in your car's tires. If the pressure gets too low, they let you know so you can fix it before it becomes a problem.
Berkeley One Classics is a company that helps people insure their special cars, like classic or rare vehicles. They make sure you get the right amount of money if something happens to your car.
An agreed value policy is a special kind of insurance for cars where you and the insurance company decide how much your car is worth. If something happens to your car, you get that amount of money, no questions asked.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a popular SUV that can handle both city driving and off-road adventures. The 2023 version has new features and options for drivers.
RPMs stand for revolutions per minute, which tells you how fast the engine is spinning. If the engine is spinning fast but the car isn't moving, something might be wrong.
The Kia Rio is a small car that is easy to drive and doesn't cost a lot of money to buy or fill up with gas. It's a good choice for people who want a reliable car for getting around town.
The Nissan Hardbody is a small truck made by Nissan that was popular in the 1980s and 1990s. It's known for being tough and reliable, which is why many people still like them today.
The brake pedal sensor is a small part that tells your car when you are pressing the brake. If it breaks, your brake lights might not turn on, which is important for safety when driving.
Brake lights are the lights on the back of your car that turn on when you press the brake pedal. They let other drivers know that you're stopping or slowing down.

This is under the hood
Welcome to the under the hood show. We are glad to have you with us
Russ Evans is here to answer your automotive questions good to be back
Hey everybody Shannon Nordstrom is here to do the same welcome hoodies. Thanks for tuning in so we can help you
Tune up. I'm Chris Carter here to answer your calls at eight six six five nine four four one five. Oh eight six six
Five nine oh four one five. Oh, what's going on five nine four? What number did you just five nine four four one five?
We're doing that. I had a couple moments like that this morning just going through some phone calls
It was it was crazy. How was your Christmas Shannon your New Year's been three years since we've been in this room
Holidays were wonderful. They were absolutely wonderful. We had a you know, it's always good
You guys, you know, just know that the holidays when you get people together and it I know and Chris had a not as
You know many people around this year. We were so sad for him. I left I went and I told him he could go with me
And he says well
No, we had a great holiday, so I'm not gonna not celebrate because
Producer dog had a good one too. He said everything was good. Did your daughter come up for hot? Oh, all right. Yeah, everybody here
Spence everybody. Yeah, this is good. I felt pretty good. I thought I was past it, but now
Don't want to leave proud out. I mean that's the important part of the show, right? Oh
My goodness. I'm feeling bad feeling bad. I went down that road the
Vikings none of our football seasons ended as well
I was right in there with our football season. No, I had a feeling our football season would end this way a
While ago, so I was fine with it. I've come to terms with it. You were expecting. I wasn't expecting you on the other hand
Oof being a Lions fan this year and the you know, the other
60 blame it on the injuries. They're like a fine
Sports car that's pushed a little too hard, you know, you'll blow it up if you really and they try every year
Every year and then Dallas is sadness, but
Well, you know, one of the Christmas things that I had on my mind
other than just how that went weird at the beginning there was
But I got to give a shout out
We had our now we've had our company Christmas party and we've been on the air since then
but we had our company Christmas party and
Give away a lot of stuff to our team and
One of the things we gave away amongst other things was a under the hood show hoodie
And so you never a lot of our staff has hoodies around here that they wear during the work day
it's one of the permissible work items that I've allowed and
Selfless promotion, you know, it's type of thing, but
We had when we gave away and so I'm you always wonder where that's gonna end up at and who's gonna get it and
Are one of our loader operators, it's also involved with the you pull it yard and
Does a lot of tasks around you he's been helping us with ground improvements
So just a really a guy that can figure anything out. We need to get done
junior and his girlfriend destiny she works at a care facility and does hair and things like that and she knew
that one of her
clients
Carl Kirchhoff
96 years old is an absolute super fan of the under the hood show night on and so
They gave that
hoodie to Carl and
He was so excited and I've got a picture
I'll put on our Facebook page for under the hood show of Carl with his hoodie and we really want to just give a big shout out to
Carl, I hope I said your name, right Carl Kirchhoff and
96 years old loves the show can't wait for it to come on and
He's got himself a hoodie and it came through an unexpected route
So I thought that was pretty cool, and we should give a shout out sounds like when you get junior another hoodie
Yeah, I don't know what his stock is, but that was that was fun. It looks like he knows where to deal them out
That's pretty cool. Yeah, that's pretty cool. I think as far as I know
That's the oldest claimed hoodie that we've had. Oh, yeah
Yeah, Pat was in
younger than that
When we got her hers, I think 92 when we must ain't Pat. Yeah, we got that. I think she was 92 when we got that one to her
Doug Doug's got one
That wasn't that wasn't okay now I think that he might that might have been in retaliation for you having a good Christmas
We'd all love to make it to 92
866-594-4150. What's caught your attention in the automotive world? Well, I have had a
Customer reach out to me and they were they're a listener and so I just wrote myself a little note here
So this is like a customer call in but they asked me they said, you know, we're really interested in getting an EV and
We understand that in our northern climate that the battery
Discharge rates gonna be faster. You know, you're gonna not much you're gonna use your heating up that can be a little faster
You know, it definitely that you don't get the range
In South Dakota in the wintertime that you're gonna get in Phoenix in the wintertime not even close
But what they wanted to know was what about the winter driving experience forget about the charging
they thought they had a good feel for that, but what about the winter driving experience and
You know, I I've got some experience
and then I leaned on some other people and
most other people I've talked to they they say that it is as
Good in the in the front-wheel drive versions
If not better because of the amount of weight that is on the ground in the low center of gravity and then
Pair that with
Technology that is so precise on the power management
It knows if there's a slip. Yeah, you know, it takes it takes the ability to do traction control
I think to another level
Especially then you get yourself into an all-wheel drive or a dual motor Tesla or something like that
You got a vehicle that's planted to the road quite well, and I would say
Above average compared to others. Yeah, I got a couple friends
With those that that the only only complaint they had about the car. They said it was beautiful
It was really good the tires the factory tires were horrible for snow. So that's a good point. They swapped them out for
more seasonable tires for this area because it came with like a street tire for
Phoenix because that's where more Georgia. Well, they've sales. They just like the Prius has come with they run
They've run a tire for my only car. Yeah economy. Yeah, for low reasons low rollings. There's distance
They're like, wow, this thing's like a snowmobile
the other thing that I think is
Especially in our area not so much maybe in larger metropolitan areas, but I think a lot of people
Their knowledge of winter driving that we all have like our inherent knowledge of winter driving
That we earned over our life
isn't necessarily
applicable any longer because
The snow removal situation the chemical packages that's gotten so much
Road almost always clear here. Well, that's what I except in the neighborhood people ask me like when I had the Prius all the time
Oh, how's that doing the snow? Well, I drive 75 miles every day all winter long
I drive on snow about
Five minutes a year
You know what I mean? You just they I
I remember when we were kids
We would get on the interstate and it was just a snow. I mean
Now they have that and now it's whole plows where they have like basically a semi with a large trailer behind it and blades on both sides and
Chemical they spray and they just they're just out there constantly
Cleaning the road off and it's you got to worry more about your car is gonna rust faster than you're gonna have to worry about snow on the road
It has changed so much. This would have been ten years ago a
Former manager here Brad Gullick's and he was always good for some witty things to say and and he'd always make you pause with his comments
Because they just came from a different place all the time and not like yours where you go
Well, what did he say? You know, this was kind of like oh, that's that's that's pretty smart
Yeah, but this is not I'm building this up way too much
but
He drove for a long time from Marion, South Dakota
to our business up in rural Garrison outside of Sioux Falls and so it's a good little hike right now
we've got a repair technician that makes that hike every day and
He was getting a different vehicle
He always drove minivans and I said I go
Why don't you ever get like an all-wheel drive van or a four-wheel drive van or a four-wheel drive pickup or something like that?
I said just for the winter time and he's like, you know
He goes when was the last time you really had to use four-wheel drive unless you were doing something that yeah
That you shouldn't have been or you were trying to help somebody that was somewhere they shouldn't be or that's every day for me
I'm doing it all time or you were hunting. He said he was I don't do any of that stuff
He said I drive on the road and the road's always clear and he said if it's not he goes
We're typically not driving anywhere because it's like a no travel advisory. You're not supposed to be out there anyway
And it was just that was 10 years ago
And I was like, you know, it is pretty true that there is not that often that it's like oh gosh
Oh gosh, we're not ice road truckers here or anything like that. It's just the roads have gotten that much better
For sure and so it definitely
Definitely is a different situation
But no, I just wanted to throw that up on the air was like a like a call because somebody had reached out to me
Independently I said hey, we'll talk about it on the air if you listen all the time. You'll hear the answer someday and
Like I said when we were up in Vermont, they'd deal with the snow constantly and it was it was all EVs over there
The the ionic was everywhere when we were in Vermont
They and they have all-wheel drive, but it was those there were EVs
everywhere
866-594-4150 you had a good point there about
Snow and where you'd need it where you wouldn't think you'd need it Texas, right?
Well, you get in areas like Amarillo or the Panhandle where they just don't plow because they don't get it near as often
They have some equipment. They'll plow if it gets real deep
But they usually just pile it up and they leave it that they didn't they're not out there when we get an inch like we are here because here
Think about this. Why do we plow and keep it clean so much? Same reason?
We clear our sidewalk constantly because that ice will start to build up
We don't have enough Sun power and it'll eventually just get thicker and thicker and thicker like the streets of St. Paul, right Chris
And then the sides they're just ruts, but down there it'll melt pretty quick with cars on it
So they just leave it
So if you want to get out and you're a person that gets up like six in the morning to go to work
You got to travel across town
You better have a little four-wheel drive if you want to make sure you're okay all the time and get out of that
That's and I'm sure Arizona up in the hills, you know
You could have some issues like that, too
And I just think of when we were kids all all the times we got stuck or pushed cars out
I I remember pushing a lot of them the last time I got stuck
This is gonna come back and bite me by the end of this year, but when's the last time you got stuck like I had to go
Pull my my daughter out
I had to go pull my daughter out of a situation that she had to learn
I think it has something to do with when you're younger and things that you do that you don't do now
Well, you've got to learn places that you drive that you don't drive now
Everything we did if we didn't know we couldn't do it
We would do it and try it and if it didn't kill us it made us stronger, right?
It did you know it did you just never touch the stove when you were younger it didn't burn you you'd be touching it today
Oh, I got a little dirt there. Let me wipe that bacon grease off, but no it's hot
You get you all I spin out when I go 60 around a corner on ice. I better not do that again
Don't tell my parents all right didn't wreck the car this time. So next time I'll slow down we learned but the first time you got a
Hey dad, did you know if you push that button you can turn off the all-wheel drive and the bear attraction?
What's track mode? I think I'm just gonna be really quiet
Let's talk to Matt you're on the under the hood show Matt. What can we do for you?
Love the show. Thanks. Hope I'm still listening when I'm 96
Well, we got to do the math on ourselves
Well, yeah, we're all here then
Go ahead Matt got a question about a
2013 Chevy Silverado pickup it has the six two in it
Starting it summer or winter from a cold start in the morning it clatters like crazy
Mr. Noise just and I've tried your justice brothers
Stuff in it it doesn't seem to help a whole lot
I've got kind of three things that I think are semi-related so then
When it warms up a couple minutes it it's smooth
Can't hear it anymore the flatter
But when I stomp on it to really give it the beans
It it wants to act like it's almost missing
And if I let off the gas a little bit
It'll it'll kind of come out of it, but if you stomp it to the floor it it acts like it's
you know getting too much gas up almost and
The other little thing that goes on when it is cold like zero degrees cold when I started
It'll clatter and it'll die a couple times
on me and
Then I have to restart it always starts right back up
But it just acts like a 40 year old vehicle that needs to be choked and kind of warmed up before it warms up
And then it seems to run fine. I've had it a couple years. It's always done it. I
There's something I could do to prepare that issue it could all be just from
Dirtiness in that in injection and induction system you could have a mass airflow sensor
That's a little dirty you could have fuel injectors that are a little dirty some carbon in the cylinders all that stuff can lead to
Fuel trim issues which will cause it to either over fuel or under fuel depending on how that mass air flow is sensing stuff a lot of
Sometimes you'll even get a master flow sensor code and people put new sensors on and they're
You know, they're throwing away a good sensor that could have just been cleaned
You could try a CRC emissions system cleaner kit
They're a partner of ours and we use their kits to clean out
Systems like this because if you're doing a tune-up, let's say you come into the shop and you say rust check out our
Silverado here and find out what's going on with it. Well if I look at it and I see everything's dirty
It's like step one is we're gonna clean everything you use a mission system kit
And then step two is to start diagnosing and seeing what we got spark plugs coils
Plug wires coil boots all those kind of things, but if it's dirty it it's covering up
It's like trying to test drive a car with a flat tire
I've got to put air in that tire before I can go drive it
So I got to get that system clean first and a lot of times that
Fixes the whole problem in it in and of itself once you're done with that
You know us but when you're combining this with the noise that he's hearing the noise is a different thing
That's what we're talking about. Just wondering how much log down state of tune issue. I think his noise
Does that noise go away once it warms up?
Yes, yeah, it's it's gonna be five minutes later. Yeah, it's probably more than likely
It's probably not lifters lifters will continue. They don't stop when they get warm at all
not not since we had solid lifters back in the 60s, but
The piston slap in these five threes is very real and continued on up through 13 14
They pretty much had it fixed when they went to the different design engine with direct injection and stuff
But still that old 13 style LS engine
We yeah, we had the 6-2. Yeah, it's still the same. That's the old
That's the old baby that hasn't switched over to the new the new design engine
Would you do a I'm just gonna say this
Would you do a leak down test first before you spent a bunch of money on is it possible?
It's got a misfire. Yeah, I know doesn't have a misfire, you know, there's no flashing check engine light. It's not missing
So I wouldn't know I would you get a check engine light occasionally, but it doesn't stay on
I don't know if that's you know something else
If you could catch it on a scanner when it does come on and it comes up as mass air flow
You can almost be certain that it is the emissions. That's the problem that it's dirty. That's very dirty
But the clatter I'm thinking you could have just a piston slap issue and that's something that
any mechanic that's been around for
More than 10 years working on a car is gonna know that Chevrolet LS piston slap noise and the second you started it cold
They'd say I know that it's piston slap. No biggie mad. Have you been around this stuff enough for you thinking know the difference?
Yeah, and it's it's probably what it is
And I've got I haven't ever taken it in too, you know, it's never concerned me necessarily because it always runs fine
It's just that I I'm afraid that I'm gonna
Have an issue at some point and I'd like to see if there was an easy remedy. Yeah, I had a
an avalanche with a
5-3 and it was in that same era and at a young age
I had a problem with a lifter on that but that squealed like crazy never went away
Yeah, it was like I swear that there was a belt coming off of it because they got in that at age
They've got a roller lifter in them and so they're
There is definitely some challenges through the years with lifters and cams with GM vehicles
but I just wanted to talk that through because
You know at your low age if or your your low RPM low age
I was thinking of 96 year-old right at your low RPM the
vehicle stalling
Also can be related to if the cylinders aren't healthy, but I think that Russ has got a good line of thinking there
But I just didn't want to rule that out. I like to that that would be my approach Matt's approach is it runs fine
I'm not gonna worry about but don't ask and hopefully get an answer that
Works out if it if he gets a different answer
He can he kind of let it slide a little bit, too, you know, this is perfect Matt

Cole Riley comes up to me. I'm at a gas station pump. He sounds like a country star. Yeah, he should be and
He's got some family that actually works at one of the auto recyclers right up the street there

While I was down there. That's cool that I didn't know I just saw my
That's a hoodie
Surprisingly because it was warmer. Yeah, it's weird because you'd call that you saw him in the wild
Yeah, yeah, I saw one here in town wearing one of our old gray hoodies that look brand new
I don't know if he was a former employee or what but it was a gray one
They were walking down 26 with their dog and I
Yeah, I
Still have a couple of those that are pretty tattered. I've worn them out. I don't have any gray ones
I just got the black and the blue the original was a grain hoody gray hoodie on the back
It said are you a hoodie?
Just in text this one this one was so this one had the new stuff on it
Okay, so the old the old old ones just said on the back. Are you a hood? Yeah, so if you remember
12 13 years ago. We tried a colored one for everybody said we want colors so we did like yeah eight ten colors and
We only sold like five percent of them were people chose colors
So we said nope we're going back to all black, but we did have some there gray and things like that

Because I think learning about EVs and new technology and cars is gonna pay way better than
Then the job he was working. So he's gonna be a mechanic. That's awesome. I did not see that congratulations
Let's talk to Greg. You're on the end of the hood show Greg. What can we do for you? I?
have
2023
Jeep grand chair key the other day. I was pulling on to one of the streets
and I pressed on the gas and
Arpams up just shot up
Like 3000 and I let my foot off the gas and it would not go down
Now this happened one another time a few weeks back. So I'm I don't know if it's a linkage or what would you say?
What?
Just so we got the facts what motor in was in this one
Is it a v8 or v6 or a six-cylinder? What do you got? I would say I would say yeah, I think it's a six
One of the things I should have said I had I pulled off the street and
Stopped it shut the car off and then it was just fine. I
Don't know if that I should I should have said is it a gas or a diesel?
That's that's what I should have said because I think the only the only the yeah, okay. All right
I'm wondering if your floor mats not stuck under your
Accelerator corner of it curled under a little bit. I would look at that first even if you think there's no way possible
Check it out. Okay already
This fall season in the last was just three months. I've had at least three people
Call me and say my car is accelerating but not every time
What's going on? But before they brought it in they called said oh, hey, you know Russ
I figured it out. Sorry. I don't need to bring my car and we cancel my appointment the
The floor mat was on top of my gas pedal or bunched up underneath it
They just pulled it out and it was it worked just fine
But but in your case though, I just want to make sure what you said
Sometimes I listen really well and sometimes I don't gave it gas
Yeah, did it was the vehicle not moving when you gave it gas?
No, I was pulling out out onto the street gave it gas and it revved up like I say
3000
And
Would not go down even when I took my foot off the gas. All right Russ was listening closer to me
I thought I got the impression that it it didn't propel you forward and the RPMs were going up without you moving
But so you also propelled forward with the RPMs going up, too
Yes, yeah, yeah, no, I fast. Yeah, I think
And now most every new car by I think it's by federal law after the whole
Toyota deal and everything else. They've got that the extra little
Buttons on the back that snapped down the floor mats so it can't slide forward a lot of times
They also have break override if your foot's on the brake and the gas at the same time
Yeah, that's the gas on that if we had that when we were kids. We never would have had any fun
Yeah, exactly you step on the brake in in about a second it just the throttle cuts
And even the newer aftermarket floor mats seem to have that to yeah go back into the factory provisions
But it's definitely something to look at. I I've had that happen. I
Do have yeah, my mats are weather tech and they do snap down. Yeah, just
Something to look at though is if that corner gets curled on them sometimes
But I got the sense that your interior vehicle is very clean. Just talking to you
How I do it, what was I right?
I
Well, I
Depends on who you ask my wife or myself. Oh, and that's a no thing is do you think
It's wrong
Could the link could the linkage be dirty and sticking no, there's no linkage on that
It's got a just just got a little it's a looks like us almost like a slot car controller the old electric slot cars
Bolted to the firewall and it just moves. It's got three wires coming on the top of it
So it's it's pretty straight forward and then the engine has an electronic basically a heavy-duty
Rios stat on it that motor like motor electric motor. Yeah, there is the real stats on the other end that that
Just turns and let's air in and out and it's all electronically controlled and there is not
any
Proven runaway acceleration stuff out there with these electronic systems
They've got a lot of safeguards on them. They're in good. They're in good shape now eight six six five nine four four one five
Oh great. Thanks very much for the call. Let's talk to Craig. You're on the end of the hood show Craig
What can we do for you? I?
was able to
Come up with my own solution here. I found on
the internet video by an 18 year old
Who has a truck like mine and?
Excuse me, what happened? Yeah, great. Just gonna Craig
Let me give some preface for our listeners here
You had sent a very nice letter to the under the hood show you had detailed pictures of your if I remember right
it was an 86 and a half Nissan hardbody and
You had done some
Repair work on it because you had bought it and then you found out there was some rust on the floor pan and
You had repaired that and look like you did a nice repair
But then when you got done you had a problem with some light stand on tonight
Did I remember that correctly because I'm doing this from a month ago when I read the letter
Our producer just came in and he said he goes I got a hold of Craig and he held the letter and I'd go
What are you talking about? What I didn't know what he was talking about, but now I know exactly what he was talking about
Alright, so what did you find Craig?
Well, actually I bought this truck
August of 1987 with 800 miles on it from a bowler corral dealership
So I've had it ever since and it's got over 283,000 miles on it now and
It was either give it away or restore it and I've just to attach to it to give it away. So
Yeah, when I pulled the carpet out on the driver's side in the padding
I pulled it up against the brake pedal and
Way up in the dash. There's this little rubbery nipple
That is shoved in there at the brake pedal sensor
and that has to be in there to make contact so that
The brake lights will work on and off
And that thing was so fragile after 39 years that it just broke into a little tiny pieces when I pulled the carpet out
and I didn't even know it and
I couldn't find the problem the brake lights came on in the letter
I said tail lights, but it was the brake lights that stayed on and I had no turn signals or light tail lights
Just the brake lights
Well, then I work on the truck
I'm glad you found that problem. That's good
Yeah, I actually
Amazon has some nice parts vendors and I was able to find this nipple through them that's
nine bucks each
But I'm gonna shine a flashlight up there the first time I couldn't see anything and I pulled to open up the column and was testing things and
Man, it was a real head scratcher. I finally gave up
And for the next three months, I just practically almost finished restoring and repain that pickup when I found on the internet a video by this 18 year old who had the same problem
And knew what the fix was and sure enough I I got two of those and pushed one way up there
And son of a gun that just fixed everything. Oh, that is awesome. Oh boy
That is a to have a problem. You can't fix and then finish a Berkeley classic. Yes, it is
Is it a Berkeley classic? It is you think so a fully restored
86 and a half Nissan King cab that he has owned since it was new
Well, we cared so much for that he restored himself to not drive every day because it's a restoration
Yeah, I'd probably say yes
Alright, well, I know the color. Oh, yeah, he sent us pictures. I have a picture of it
Well, then we just
I was gonna guess red because I had that 87 red we got to play the Chris game here though quick Chris
Yeah, this baby's 40 years old
Yeah, so back in 1986
How many
1946 vehicles just after the war we're rolling around so now though there are a lot of 86
87 85 4 3 vehicles out there you can pop on Facebook marketplace right now and find
Hundreds probably not thousands of those that are still in runnable condition
You weren't finding a lot of runnable condition 1940s vehicles in the 80s
Well, I thought you were gonna ask because it's a hard body and we saw the sight of where the hands on the hard body was at
I thought you're gonna bring that up. No. Oh, I wonder I just turned Craig back to Doug to get the hoodie
But I had two friends with
Nissan's of that vintage and they both had weird smells in the cab that they could not get rid of
And we got a car up at our shop right now and it's got us weird smell in the cab
But the evidence is laying on the center console
Eight six six five nine four four one five. Oh, let's go to Ohio and talk to Walt. You're on the end of the hood show
Walt, what can we do for you?
Yeah, I got two questions for you. Okay, the first one is what's a significant of the guitar you got on the
table there
All right
Well, somebody just sent me a text and says caught some of your show between my break you guys are rock stars
So it's it's we're rock stars. We're rock stars. Walt appreciate that David
No, that's that's Chris Chris. I has a his family has very deep musical roots like everyone everyone in that family
plays
Musical instruments things like that nice and if I get this right and you even your father was in the
Was it the what the symphony?
He was a professional professional music decided to be a family man. Yeah in a symphony orchestra. So yeah
I made that clock out of that guitar and I actually just brought it in to go look at yeah
It's a clock if you zoom in on it. There's a clock in there. So we thought let's keep it
It's it's a significant gas pump that doesn't pump gas in the back in the engine that doesn't run anymore in the corner
So it's fun and it gets people to ask questions
This is the clock the time work on the clock it cares it might not know it did when I got it
Yeah, we got it. It looks like it's about 1030 right now. Yeah, I think it I think the batteries done now
But when I brought it in it worked makes me remember I gotta get a bunch of stuff in my house
New Year's Eve is when I new year's when I usually do
smoke alarm batteries
Access pad batteries. That's usually my new year's thing. I haven't done that yet. I just thought I said that we're already in the January
What's going on here? All right? Well, what's your actual question?
Well, what my was thinking when I seen that I thinking of the old groucho March
Show years ago where he'd interview people and they'd ask some questions
And then if you said the magic word is duck would drop down from the ceiling and you'd win a prize
I'll maybe that gets our with the prize
My wife had her way ever had her way it'd be for sale
Is everything I do she's like
Well put it all here just make it put it in here
Chris took a big I had a big oversized bottle of wine that we had gotten somewhere and
And he made a lamp out of that for me. That was kind of cool winters
I get down to that basement and all sorts of things happen
Well, I got an old four Buick round of view and the brake light on the right rear works in her met
And I changed the bulb and look at the socket, but
Looking online and GM tech said there's a
10-pin module and
Use panel on the inside console and I was wondering if that would
Cause that was if you turn the hazard light on then hit the brake pedal after you turn that off
It'll work for three or four strokes or if you turn the right turn signal on it'll work for three or four strokes
But that's on the way you can get it to work
Yeah, it's working on the dash is what you're saying, but not in the back
Maybe necessarily if somebody was watching that light. I don't think it's all don't work
Yeah, the front one works a dash light bulb works, but the rear right when don't work unless you activate it with the
Turn signal or the hazard thing that'll work for a couple strokes
Okay, if you turn that on that means that power is reaching back there and the wiring is good and the bulb is good in the socket
We know that that tells us it has to be further up in the module or or the switch
That module is not very common to fail, but it does control all that so it could be that that's what's going on with it
The test letter new
Go ahead sir multi-function switch in here like six months ago
So I'm sure that was is not the problem, but it could be but I was thinking more like something
Like a body module or something that was not letting juice go through back to that and that's what that module is
That's that rear control module. So it's very very possible. That's what it is
You know, it could be other things, but it's possible. That's what's going on with it
It's got 300,000 miles on the body stuff and that's never been changed. So yeah
Is there a way to
Diagnose that further without replacing it or do you just have to do that? Oh, yeah, you you can
You get a scan tool and you read the inputs and the outputs of the module
And then you plug your voltmeter into the inputs and outputs and see what you got if you've got
You know if the scan tool says okay, we've got these things turned on
But nothing's happening and you look and you've got an input coming into that module and you got good power on ground
That module is definitely bad. Okay, but if you check it and go, oh, I don't have any signal coming in
Of course, I'm not gonna everything going out
So that particular lighting module does not require any programming in that age
So if you had a the rendezvous aren't around as much as they used to be but
If there was a self-service facility nearby that had a rendezvous you could go pluck one of them out for a few bucks
Is there any matching? Is there any the rendezvous uses the same
Chassis basically as some of the minivans, but I don't know if I think that module's not in the minivans the same way
I think that's more of a
Even some of the dash components were even the same you look on clave. I think that type that body that square rendezvous that
Was the other one
rendezvous and uh, there's another one
Uh, two of them. Yeah, the rendezvous was the Buick. Um
When they're well, it might be the similar to
The Pontiac as tech as tech. Okay. I think it was the rendezvous and as tech
Yeah, those were the same and they and they shared the motor and transmission basically with like a
Like a a venture van or a Pontiac transport
And I just don't know if they shared any of the electronics
But you could find that out by looking that up. Here's how I cheat a lot now
Now I never I couldn't play if I could have done this 30 years ago
I've been a superhero for on the parts counter
But you can look up that module online just on just to do a basic google search
and then
AI has gotten smart enough
That it doesn't it's not always right because it mixes up
Models and parts and everything else
But you can find trends really quick and say what is this the same as and
Once you find the module and it'll tell you oh looks like this part number was also used in a
blah blah blah blah blah and that is one
Very good use of AI when we're trying to sleuth out parts. Okay, um, but you can't trust it
You just got to use it as a reference. Yeah
Yeah, don't it'll yeah find it find the reference on AI and then go look for it on your own to verify that
That's it. At least it'll get you sure in the right. It's like saying I've lost something
I've lost my car keys in my house. Well, it's they've been known to be in the bedroom or that is a great example next to the furnace
Okay, go look in those two places if they're there then you can say that's where it was
AI is not watching where you put your keys. That's so but they're just they're using general generalities not wall
Thanks very much for the call. Good luck eight six six five nine four four one five. Oh got a couple minutes here
Let's try paul. You're on the end of the hood show paul. What can we do for you?
Hi, you guys just had a call about a 2023
Grand Cherokee, and I think you missed the diagnosis you guys
Yes, that he had a
Stuck format. Yeah. Well, we we we are very curious what you have to say because there was no diagnosis
Well, it doesn't and now it doesn't
Yeah, because he said he could go and shut it off and then it would then it would then it wouldn't do it again
So have you experienced this or do you have something you could offer us? Please tell us
Yes. Yes. Yes. So I have the same car had the same problem
What he did is it has paddle shifters
And if you accidentally bump the paddle bingo it will lock into the gear
And so what he needs to do when that happens is you need to
Pull and pull the left paddle shifter, and then it will go back to like automatic mode instead of paddle shifting
Because when he turns it off and back on it goes back in
Didn't he tell us the vehicle stayed at 3000 rpm until he shut the car off
When he wasn't driving he did no he said he yeah
No, he said it would go up to 3000. He would then let off the gas so it wasn't shifting
Yeah, and so it can Greg hold that paddle shifter down
Yeah, so he continued to propel forward like we said, but only as far as that gear would take him and when mine does that
I put it into neutral and back into drive
Paul you nailed it. I do that a lot when I'm trying to turn my radio up is that I'm turning it around
I'm glad that you don't get that paul a hoodie. Yes
He's uh, and I'm glad he did it in the same hour of the show too. Absolutely that that uh,
We've had that on our
The durango at work where someone's like it just went crazy. I'm like, I know what it was
Because yeah, you just bump it and all of a sudden it just stays in that gear
well
like mine
My paddle shifters in my new car are just kind of for fun. It just changes the number on the dash and doesn't do much
Ha ha
