The engine makes the car move by burning fuel, and the transmission decides how that power gets to the wheels. The point here is that if you keep both in good shape, the car can last a long time.
The Toyota 4Runner is a rugged SUV that’s famous for lasting a long time. Here, they’re using it as an example of a car that can go hundreds of thousands of miles with the same main drivetrain.
On a car loan, your payment usually has two pieces: principal (what you borrowed) and interest (what it costs to borrow). They’re saying you can avoid getting stuck in new payments by keeping your current car longer.
A Corvette is a Chevrolet sports car. When they say “mid-engine,” they mean the engine sits closer to the middle of the car, which helps the car feel more balanced and handle better.
A full brake inspection means a mechanic checks the whole braking system, not just whether the brakes feel okay. They look for worn parts and problems that could cause poor stopping or uneven wear.
An oil change service is when you replace the engine oil (and usually the filter) on a schedule. Fresh oil helps the engine run smoothly and protects it from wear.
Front wheel drive means the front wheels do the pushing for the car. Since they also steer, they can wear tires differently than the rear wheels.
Term
full front end and steering inspection
This is a check of the parts in the front of the car that help you steer and keep the wheels aligned. It looks for looseness or wear before it turns into a failure that could make the wheel move or fold.
The outer tie rod is part of the steering system that helps connect the steering wheel to the front wheels. If it breaks, the wheel can shift in a way that makes the car unsafe to drive.
A ball joint is a key suspension joint that lets the wheel move up and down while staying connected. If it wears out, the wheel can become unstable and potentially collapse.
The drive axle is the part that sends power from the transmission to the wheels. If it gets damaged, the car may not be able to drive properly and repairs can be expensive.

and the sun is definitely going to shine this morning. Stick around, we'll have the Monday
weather report for you, as well as a morning swiggy, which is way over there, I might add. Who
is it? You know where it is? It's over there. You know where I am? Over here. I'm over here.
That's all right, I have a secondary. Always have a plan B, and my good friend Deacon John,
for many years ago met him at rock rods and relationships in North Tanawanda. He always
would say, Motor mouth, multiple plan Bs. That's what one must have. That was decades ago. Decades
ago. So I passed that on to you for what it's worth. Have multiple plan Bs. So if you're in
the drive through, you're in the queue to get through the drive through at some time, at some
point on Monday to get to work on time. It is Monday morning. It was a hot long weekend. Well,
not along for maybe some, but for others, just a regular weekend. Check your order. We're going to
have a swiggy in just a very couple of minutes. We have a hot topic this morning. No pun intended.
Yes, it's hot. It's hotter than pepper sprout. I just checked the the old thermometer in the shop
today and we've got a lot of work to do it is production day. It's 80 degrees in there right
now. So I'm hoping that we can I've got the fans on. Yeah, I'm hoping we can push some of that 80
degrees is out the door. Yeah, I was going to open the Bay door about six inches. But you know,
the rodents and the night creatures are still kind of crawling around out there because it's dark
here when I record the podcast. Well, let's get through quickly through the housekeeping tips. If
you're joining us for the very first time on whatever podcast platform you're listening to,
it could be Spotify, Apple, Amazon, could be Podbean. Yeah, wherever you are tuning into your
podcast, just type in the search bar, car connection, workshop, and you'll find us all of our
podcasts upload immediately. Once they go live at 8am and every morning, Monday through Saturday,
they go into our YouTube channel. So where do you find all that stuff? Well, we've made it
super easy for you. Go to carconnectionbusinessnetwork.com. That is our website. And that's where
everything you everything you'd need to follow the build and repair work that we do and connect
with our program partners is all found on the homepage. So the short version is ccbusnet.com.
So when you land on the homepage, you'll see logos for businesses. Those are not all of them are
our program partners, but our program partners are there and our recommended businesses. If you're
a business owner with a medium or small business, connect with us. We've got room to put you into
a category on our business network website where people from all around the Niagara region outside
the Niagara region, the Golden Horseshoe and the south shores of Lake Erie can connect
with your business. So send me an email. That's the best way fastest way to connect with me is to
do that. And thank you to all of you who are supporting our program partners by giving them
your business. So don't be shy. Don't be afraid to connect with them. That's what they're there for.

So our link for our YouTube channels there in the top right hand corner Facebook, Instagram,
we're on a local website called Stevensvilleontheweb.ca gets about 20,000 views and our skippy our
videographers put that together many years ago. I think she said it's about seven years old now.
A way to connect the businesses in the community together in Stevensville and it's working. It's
doing a great job at doing that. So she put us in the category of automotive experts. So those three
platforms join our community Facebook, Instagram and Stevensvilleontheweb.ca that's where you'll find
reels bloopers and outtakes you will not see anywhere else and yes we do have merch. The merch
is on the top right hand corner. Freedom Expressions puts our store together. So everything you order
you get fresh they make it as you order it and ship it out to you. So and keep this in mind
everything you purchase in the store we take no proceeds from that. Skippy and I we turn that back
to total freedom addiction campuses where lives are being changed one at a time every single day
for almost 25 years. So that's what they do. So we we're doing what we do to help them do what
they can do that we can't do. Did you get that? So stand with us and help us to make a difference
in the life of someone who's stuck in an addiction and has made that decision to say today's the day
I'll do whatever it takes to get past this over it under under it and around it and that's what's
important is that we all come together and help those who are struggling. That's what our YouTube
channel is all about. If you're needing to know and want to know all the automotive basics about
vehicle ownership that's where you're going to get it. You're going to get it on our YouTube
channel between our YouTube channel our podcast where we have some fun and let our hair down a
little bit. I do have a fair amount of hair so people tell me they're like used to seeing me
with short hair and now they're going wow you have a lot of hair where'd you get that? I just
found it it was kicking around at the barbershop. So everything is there for you to tap into what
I call preventive vehicle maintenance and all our videos are teaching you five things and they're
all basic level. What it is what the component is where it's located how it works and how you broke
it. That's why it's costing you money and teaching you that you know you don't have to break things
if you understand how your automobile works and you get some of the basic fundamentals you're on
your way to keeping your vehicle as long as you want to because mileage doesn't matter it's
maintenance and that goes for every single thing around us. Even if you're standing in a corn field
and you you turn 360 degrees all the way around with your eyes open you'll still see things that
need maintenance absolutely. So if you're interested in keeping your vehicle long term
keeping that engine transmission running as long as you want in fact I was with a friend of mine
yesterday we always swap stories he has a Toyota 4Runner an older one and he's over 600,000 k
same engine same transmission same vehicle he's heading for 700,000 and I said man I feel like
a child I only have I said I'm just under 400,000 I said it will turn 400,000 this summer for sure
he goes wow that's getting up there he said but I don't think he can beat me I said no I don't feel
like driving all night all day to pee Steve so is it doable it absolutely is so if that's of
interest to you whether you're a man woman single divorced four times married
widowed it doesn't matter senior young adult midlife crisis it doesn't matter
if what's of interest to you is not paying making payments and principal and interest
payments on a car and keeping the one you have long term you can absolutely have an older vehicle
and very very reliable so let's knock that one out of the park well let's jump right in let's
have our morning swiggy I have a title for you today tonight tonight I'll get it out sooner
later it is Monday episode 215 when was the last time and you can fill in the blank with that now
remember it's a family show okay just keep that in mind it's a family show so that line comes from
many years in the service base having discussions or is my helper marky mark funky bunch
um he would say we're having a discussion not a discussion a discussion say motormouth I need
to have a discussion my schedules changed okay that is a line that I used many times with couples
singles whatever your circumstances are I would say well when was the last time you
spent some money on this car blank just like this zero so we're gonna talk about that this morning
so get ready all right raise your cup of joe that's how we do it here if you're brand new
you're a newbie you need a pack of 16 crayola crayons you need to have a writing utensil that
does not run out of ink and a big enough notepad that you have lots of geography to cover and
scribble on and put notes and ditties and little things there leaf bags yeah get a good supply of
leaf bags if you miss the program you can catch it on our youtube channel and if you have not yet
subscribed to our youtube channel uh skippy and I are asking for your help we have a goal to reach
our very first 1000 subscribers by July 30th and we're at the halfway point we'd really like your
help so if you have not yet subscribed or you think you're subscribed would you take a moment
sometime today this week to check to see if you are because many of you are enjoying the videos
and the podcasts there but you're not subscribed and skippy saying ask them why I don't want to
ask them she goes you're going to ask them why there you go why aren't you please take care of
that bit of housekeeping like share follow ring the notification bell so you miss absolutely no
automotive tech tips and repair knowledge at all we don't want you missing a single bite we keep the
videos around 15 minutes once in a while skippy will let me go 20 but that'll be the limit otherwise
the stick with the nail comes out and it hurts right away and it leaves a mark so I don't like that
she gives me the thing the 10 minute signal and then the threat comes after that so
enjoy the videos watch them over and over again as we see that you are but if you would help us get
the booster cables get us some fuel fill up our tank charge the battery and get our engine running
on all eight cylinders that would be fantastic we really appreciate you helping us hit our goal
of our very first 1000 subscribers which which unlocks the doors to get our videos out to many
many more people and will also help us to to put together some other ideas that we have to help you
as well but it takes money to do that so thank you so much for that on 321 it's swiggy time
mine's way over there so I'm just gonna have some H2O it's the closest thing I can reach it
my arm is not 15 feet long so it's gonna have to sit over there now I don't know why I put it
over there I always put it on the talk table ready to go but I didn't it's Monday and I got lots of
work to do a 321 it's helpful we'll take it it's not flavorful but you know it's wet and it's
it's helpful we'll just I'm gonna put that right back in its holder and just say later later for
that well thank you to our good friends Kathy Dave and Dan Grimo at Niagara Block 5000 Montreal's
Road for bringing our mornings swiggy together with us this morning if you've got your order
you're through the drive through keep an eye on the roadways people are generally still one eye open
one partially eye open and driving like maniacs out there I can't believe how people drive these
days it's insane absolutely is yesterday I would I had to run and get some supplies and some parts
and a tool that I did not have to do a job and I actually got stuck behind two Lamborghinis
and one of the newest mid-engine Corvettes and these guys were really making some noise I'll tell
you we went down through the tunnel and well and they let a rip and it was loud holy smokes clean
the ear wax right out of one ear and put it into the next one well here's what we got for you if
you're looking to build create a building and you need blocks and metal and rebar and angle
irons and all that stuff they have it at Niagara Block if you've been dreaming ladies of that beautiful
backyard space that could you could call your very own your outdoor living space they have all
the hardscape landscaping materials you can muster to make that happener for you if you check in
with Kathy Greenwell she has a list of contractors you can trust to put the package together estimate
drawings the whole nine yards and get your backyard scape put together just for you so get
in touch with them today and let them know you heard all about them right here on MotorMouth's
morning drive that's Kathy David and Dan Greenwell Kathy and David our husband and wife Dan is the
older brother I believe and very nice people they have done a lot in Niagara Falls since 1931
it's just crazy crazy good so thank you to Mama Louise and her husband Earl for being such an
amazing automotive enthusiast and selecting low mileage quality vehicles and being able to offer
them to you at fair prices that's why they're called Greater Toronto Areas Premier Pre-owned Auto
Store that's a safe place for you folks they've been with us about seven years now and I'll tell you
I hear back from people who purchased there that they've never ever had a vehicle purchasing
experience like that that Mama Louise and her wonderful husband Earl put together for you if
you're looking for a specific vehicle and they don't have it you need to connect because if it's
out there they have the resources to find it and if it's out there and it's junk Earl's not going
to push pull drag it home just to make a sale he's going to tell you let's wait it out your vehicle
will show up at some point they do carry a decent inventory of vehicles under roof and outside so
check in with city auto sales and leasing in-house financing and leasing available to you also you
know what you get peace of mind just by going there so it's worth it if you got to drive 90 minutes
one way to get there that's a big purchase and you don't want to end up with somebody's problem child
in your driveway 62 degrees right now that's nice that's all go outside it feels warmer but 63 degrees
clear conditions will continue all day today today's temperature range will be from 61 to 84 and it
feels more like 62 to 86 that's a bit of a stretch don't you think it's kind of like saying when somebody
asked me well how much is that going to cost can you give me an estimate yep it's going to be more
than a dollar but less than a million you know wow that really narrows it down I said you know
sometimes you just got to throw it out there a wild guess well let's jump into our podcast title
today and thank you give a big thank you to our certified financial planning professionals changing
lives out there when it comes to working with money and dealing with debt all at all at the same
time things that you know what you need to get some clarity and right answers so whether you're
working with tony mealy or larry tea troll work with someone who has the credential certified
financial planner folks not an advisor I want to get that clear advisors do not know tax laws
they just know about some investments and you get what the last 10 people got they just it's
cookie cutter with a certified financial planning professional you're getting all aspects of your
finances put in correct order along with understanding it's not what you make it's what you get to
keep tax laws and how it works for you and tfsa's investing the money from your
tfsa into dividends so that you make money so that you make money in low or medium risk
or high risk investments you can invest your tfsa money get dividends and it adds to your tfsa
tax-free savings account when was the last time you had that conversation at the bank
I wonder why so if you have a portfolio at the bank making pittance at 3.99 percent I would really
be having a look at that and getting it out of there if you're in debt don't give up on yourself
sit down and get this hour in a coffee okay nobody's going to charge you nobody's selling you anything
this is a way for you to get the right answers and get you back up on your feet so don't give up
and don't listen to bad advice I've done that in the past before I met Tony and Larry and let me
tell you I'll tell that story one day it will put it will make your toenails curl do not take
advice financial advice from anyone whose feet are not standing where you want to be don't do it
I'm just telling you I've heard that somewhere before don't do it yeah tell me in the in my email
what's that from so if you have an investment portfolio you're drowning in debt you don't
even have an estate plan you have 18 year old kids at home you're not their medical power of
attorney you need a mortgage set up with people who really care about you and more critical illness
life insurance you got to have all the stuff put together folks there's six pillars to a plan
and when you have one leg missing you are already off balance so get that discovery meeting today
you want to know how you're going to buy the next car you want to know how you're going to maintain
the one you presently have so that you can keep it longer and not pay at being car payments
that's how you're going to do it you got to find out how to do it get a plan work the plan and get
results because the do does and the did is done so get that hour in a coffee leave all your
monies at home no one's selling you anything and connect make that connection and start
changing things today because excuses are useless you know you ever meet those people they ask them
that that one line you should never say how you do it and then you go oh is that the time
yeah because they just tell you the same things that are going on in their life the last 10 years
and nothing's changed so if if nothing changes nothing changes folks so I I bring this up and
I talk about it a little longer every time because it's money that causes problems with the car every
single time every single time so that's why today's title ties right in with Tony Miele
and Larry Tietro who I've known for well over 20 years they've been my planners for well over a decade
probably closer to 15 and these guys know what they're doing and they don't need any more clients
they're giving you that hour discovery meeting to help you get on track and move you forward
so this ties right in when was the last time I can't tell you the number of times I've said
that same line over 44 years in the car business in the repair business people get all upset they
bring the vehicle in it's got problems well what kind of problems you're going to have to check it
over there's there's multiple issues well when was the last time you spent any money on it
you get the deer in the headlights look that's what you get and I know at that point I'm going
to be the stink maker when I look this vehicle over there's going to be a list not a starboard
list it's going to be a list of problems and then it's going to be a money problem you follow me
that's why I talked about the planners and that's why we started that program you're going to get a
chance to meet these fellas and many other people that are in their profession because we're getting
ready to have guests on once or twice a month so you can meet the people that I've known for decades
that can help you that they're there to honestly help you they're not there to work for free so
get that out of your melon if they want to do something for you for free you shouldn't have to
ask or demand that's wrong if they want to do something for you you let them do what's calling
on their heart to do for you so that line rattles in my head and has rattled in my head for four
plus decades when was the last time you had the vehicle in the shop so I've got five things for
you today to write down and to ponder and then I'll have five more tomorrow because we're going to
cover that when was the last time and we're going to fill in the blanks so that we can get you on
track to get I don't know if you'll catch up to my friend Steve 700,000 K all original motor
transmission drivetrain all of it how did he get to 700 because he understands maintenance
and he doesn't want to replace it it's been a great ride and it's still in fantastic condition
just keep going yeah he gets it so now we got to help you to get it as well and don't listen to
those who are saying well you know you got to have a reliable vehicle let me put something to you
straight I don't care whose flavor it is what assembly line it came off of there's no guarantee
of any of it being reliable otherwise why do they have warranties
hello hello hello why do they offer warranties but they only give you a short warranty why would
that be hmm because they know their junk is not reliable that's why they've known it for decades
and it's even worse now so they really need to pull up their socks because I'll tell you if you park
some of their junk in my driveway I'd call a flatbed to haul it off to the wrecking yard I don't
want it I don't want it in my in my hands whatsoever so number one and I want you to
say this line before each item when was the last time you had a full brake inspection
number two when was the last time you did your oil change service on time or even did an oil change
oil change it really you got to do that well the sales guy said I can keep it in there for 225
thousand kilometers whatever you got to take charge of your own vehicle remember this even
when you're making payments you own it okay it's called vehicle ownership I remember one time I
I had to explain that to a client when I was working for someone else I said you know there
comes a point where the vehicle is no longer the manufacturers it's it's yours it's called vehicle
ownership now you have to take charge of fixing it well why do I have to do that I paid for it
okay folks it's out there I can't make this stuff up okay so number three do you get that you write
that down number three when was the last time you had a tire rotation keep your tires wearing
equally all the way around and getting maximum tire life out of all four instead of just maybe two
they're lazy at the back if it's a front wheel drive they're just along for the ride like a wheel
barrel when was the last time you had a full front end and steering inspection instead of waiting
till the outer tie rod breaks and then the wheel folds in or the ball joint let's go and the wheel
folds in and breaks the transmission and the drive axle just so that it costs you more money
remember I said the the five things what it is where it is how it works and how you broke it
and how you could have learned more about your vehicle to save you a lot of time effort money
and a few bloody knuckles all at the same time and not have to make car payments because you're
making money on that vehicle every time you turn the key if you own it outright you know that you're
making money with that vehicle so you should be paying attention but this podcast is for those
who want to do that and for those who don't well you probably might want to tune into crocheting
101 or noodle art is making a comeback I hear so number five when was the last time
you had a complete cooling system service and inspection
so with those five things said you can own and operate an automobile in two different ways
way number one not in the know you have no idea about those five things I just mentioned
and you have no idea when those five things I just mentioned were taken care of so what does that mean
that means you're going to get the surprise attacked so what does that mean for you mentally
physically is anxiety as soon as something goes wrong it's going to be a cascade of problems
in all five of those areas I almost guarantee that a hundred percent
but you'll have to stick around for the next five because I got some sweet ones to go in there too
to remind you these are things that you don't wait till they break so you either
own the vehicle in the know which removes a lot of stress pressure and gives you peace
of mind driving or you're owning that vehicle not in the know you have no stinking idea what's coming
yeah because there's no magic wand or crystal ball in any year maker model that I'm aware of
and I don't have that in my toolbox either so I can't wave the magic wand and everything goes away
actually had someone asked me that can't you just like wave your magic wand and just the car is good
again I go if I had that you wouldn't be able to afford it you wouldn't be able to afford me
waving the magic wand because see somebody has to learn how to use the magic wand and where
where and how to wave it so that it works oh you can't make this stuff up folks they're out there
they're out there so when when was the last time when was the last time and here's what I
I leave you with and we have a motormouth summer tech tip for you number 12 coming up yes number
12 is check your belts before the beach in fact I was at the beach yesterday was beautiful the
water was like glass at 730 in the morning there were actually people out there some
some peeps were doing metallurgy and cashing in on the swimming swimming area and others were in
for their morning dip pretty cool it was beautiful was absolutely beautiful so get to the beach this
year at least once or twice here's the thing if not I who if not now when
and that points to almost everything in life and that is a phrase that I have borrowed from a
gentleman his name is Billy Zeoli you can check check him out in a seminar in Cleveland
I know Cleveland it was like in a February and it was stinking cold in Cleveland in February
it was about 2 30 in the morning when Billy Zeoli came out to speak and he left us all
with that sentence and it stuck with me for many years many years if not I who if not now when
if not I who if not now when so you can apply that to your automobile 100 so I just gave you
five things if it's not going to be you who's it going to be and if it's not going to be now
then when when will you start taking care of your automobile so that you can keep it long term
and save yourself a lot of headaches heartaches and a lot of trading time for money
because you don't have to I don't when I bought the FJ back in December 2013 I said this is it
I'm not making any more car payments I'm going to work my honey off to get this paid off in a year
and I did and a lot of people were surprised about that when I said I'm going to pay this off a year
oh yeah right that's right okay yeah yeah yeah and then I made sure those people
that I called them and I said yep made my last payment today stop by I'll show you the paperwork
oh I knew you'd do it you see what I mean people are like willow branches they they weigh very easily
if not I who if not now when if you don't take care of the vehicle that you presently have
and you continue to listen to the talking heads they will put you deep in the biggest hole
you've ever seen in your life just because of a car they don't want you keeping your vehicle
long term because they know it saves you money it makes them no money they don't even want to
the manufacturers don't even want to sell you parts anymore you got to go searching for parts
but I'm getting really good at it so yeah you're in good shape I can I can help you I can guide
you in the right areas where you can find the parts you need to keep your vehicle going no problem
oh they the manufacturers want you out of it the day you make your last payment and you go see the
sales department and you buy another piece of their junk yeah and I don't mind calling it junk
because the last six years show me something that isn't junk makes good money for the tax and service
base that's how they're making a scratch and out of living so they're thankful for that junk to be
made but the last six years it's time for somebody to really go to the table and actually produce
something that's worth the value the amount of money you're asking for so let's jump into the uh
motor mouth summer tech tip and I'll let you on your way so you can start your your new week if
you're on vacation have yourself a wonderful vacation be safe out there and drive safe don't
get crazy we want you to come back and visit us again well today's motor mouth summer tech tip is
check your belts before you go to the beach before that beach trip give those engine belts a glance
cracks phrase squealing sounds that's your ride waving a red flag summer heat and old rubber
do not mix well replacing about now beats being stranded with sand in your shoes and no air
conditioning with that we'll I'll leave you with that for to ponder we'll see you tomorrow morning
for another motor mouth morning tech tip and also our morning our motor mouth morning drive we'll see
you at 8 a.m tomorrow morning be safe out there drive safe keep an eye on the other guy and keep it
under 100 and put the coffee on maybe we'll come to your house tonight for a cup of joe happy healthy
motoring peace patience and kindness always and we'll see you in the next one bye for now
About this episode
A quick, upbeat workshop-style episode frames long-term vehicle ownership around preventive maintenance and knowing your car’s service history. The host asks key questions like “when was the last time you spent any money on it,” then walks through a practical checklist: brake inspections, oil change timing, tire rotations, and front-end/steering checks before failures get catastrophic. They also highlight cooling system service, plus a summer tip to “check your belts before the beach.” The episode ties reliability to upkeep, not luck.
During my years owning an automotive repair shop, I asked customers the same simple question: When was the last time.....? That's usually when the room got quiet. Most costly repairs don't happen overnight-they're the result of maintenance that's been forgotten or delayed In this first episode of a new mini - series, we'll talk about the questions every vehicle owner should ask before small problems become expensive ones.
