You Really Only Need 7 Products To Fully Detail A Car

A lot of people think they need 25 or 30 different products just to properly detail one car. Wheel cleaner, tire cleaner, bug remover, foam soap, contact wash soap, drying aid, glass cleaner, trim dressing, interior cleaner, leather cleaner, polish, ceramic spray, water spot remover, and the list keeps going.
But do you really need all of that?
In this podcast-style video, I break down the 7 products I would use to fully detail most cars. This includes washing, heavy cleaning, decontamination, polishing, protection, interior cleaning, tires, trim, and final finishing.
The goal is not to say specialty products are useless. They absolutely have their place. But most people do not need every specialty product every single time. Most people need a better system.

low pH soap
"One for wheels, one for tires, one for bugs, two or three just to wash your car because [15.1s] you need a low pH soap, you need a high pH soap, and then you need a pH neutral soap,"
“Low pH” means the cleaner is more acidic. Detailers use acidic soaps on tough grime like brake dust because they can dissolve it better than gentler cleaners.

“High pH” means the cleaner is more basic. Detailers use basic soaps when the car is really dirty because they help cut through oily road grime.

pH neutral soap

“pH neutral” means the soap is gentle and balanced. It’s often used for normal washes because it’s less likely to cause problems than very acidic or very harsh cleaners.
“pH neutral” means the soap is balanced so it’s neither acidic nor alkaline. Detailers use pH-neutral soaps for safer, more regular washing—especially when you don’t want to risk stripping or stressing existing coatings or finishes.
contact wash soap

“Contact wash soap” is a cleaner meant to work when it touches the car’s surface. Detailers use it to help loosen dirt so it can be rinsed away more easily.
A “contact wash soap” is designed to clean through direct contact with the surface (rather than relying only on dwell time or rinsing). Detailers choose it based on how well it lifts grime while still being safe for the paint or coating.
dry-nade
"and then you might need a contact wash soap, and then you need something for drying, a [26.8s] dry-nade, you need a separate glass cleaner, one for trim, a couple for the interior,"
A “dry-nade” is something you use to help dry the car with less streaking and fewer water spots. It’s basically a drying helper after you wash.
“Dry-nade” appears to be a product name or slang for a drying aid used after washing. Drying aids help water sheet off and reduce the chance of water spots and streaks while you dry the car.
paint protection

Alcantara

Alcantara is a soft, suede-like material used on some car interiors. It’s easy to mark, so you usually need special cleaners and careful wiping to keep it looking right.
Alcantara is a synthetic suede-like interior material. It needs dedicated cleaning products and gentle techniques because it can be damaged or permanently matted if you use the wrong cleaner or scrub too aggressively.
paint correction

“Paint correction” means fixing visible paint flaws like swirl marks and light scratches. Detailers usually do it by polishing the paint until it looks smooth and clear again.
“Paint correction” is the process of removing defects like swirl marks, scratches, and oxidation from the clear coat. It’s typically done with polishing compounds and pads, often in multiple steps to refine the finish.
water spots

Water spots are the hard mineral marks that show up after water dries. They can be tough to remove, so detailers use specific products to get rid of them without damaging the surface.
Water spots are mineral deposits left behind when water evaporates on paint or glass. They can etch or stain surfaces, so detailing often uses dedicated spot removers or decontamination steps to remove them safely.
ceramic coatings
"maybe three for paint correction, one, you know, eight different [43.2s] ceramic coatings, and before you know it, you have hundreds and hundreds of bottles"
Ceramic coatings are protective layers you apply to paint. They help the car resist dirt and grime and can make the finish easier to clean, but you have to prep the paint well first.
Ceramic coatings are liquid-applied protective layers that bond to paint to add chemical and abrasion resistance. They’re popular because they can improve gloss and make washing easier, but they still require proper prep to apply correctly.
better system
"but really what we need is [111.8s] a better system. [117.2s] a simplified system so that it is repeatable and so that we could work on our"
They’re saying you don’t need a huge collection of products. Instead, use a simple step-by-step routine you can repeat so you get consistent results every time.
The host is arguing for a repeatable detailing workflow (“system”) instead of buying many specialized products. A good system standardizes steps so results come from technique and consistency, not from having the biggest product lineup.
decontaminate the car
"I need to do some cleaning. [555.7s] I probably need to decontaminate the car. [557.8s] I might need to do some paint enhancement."
Decontamination is the extra cleaning step that gets rid of stubborn stuff stuck to the paint. Regular washing helps, but decontamination targets particles that cling on even after you wash.
In detailing, decontamination is the step where you remove bonded contaminants that regular washing can’t get off. This often includes things like iron fallout and other fallout-type grime that cling to paint and glass.
paint enhancement
"I probably need to decontaminate the car. [557.8s] I might need to do some paint enhancement. [560.5s] I need to do some interior cleaning."
Paint enhancement is about making the car’s paint look better. Usually it means polishing to remove light scratches and haze so the color looks richer.
Paint enhancement refers to processes that improve how the paint looks—typically by correcting surface defects. In practice, it often means polishing to reduce swirls, scratches, and oxidation so the finish looks deeper and clearer.
dressing
"And then, of course, cherry on top stuff, like I need the final details, right? [571.8s] That's where the dressing comes in. [574.0s] So the way I look at it is every product needs a clear purpose"
A dressing is a finishing product you apply to things like tires or exterior trim. It helps them look better and can add protection so they don’t fade as fast.
In detailing, dressing is a product used to enhance and protect exterior surfaces like trim, tires, or other rubber/plastic areas. It’s typically applied after cleaning to restore color and provide a protective finish.
remove that redundancy
"Ask yourself, do you really need both, right? [592.4s] The goal is to really remove that redundancy, [595.4s] because in that redundancy is the confusion, is the wasted time."
They’re saying don’t buy or use several products that all do the same thing. If two products basically overlap, you’ll spend more time deciding and doing steps that don’t add much.
The host is describing a workflow strategy: avoid using multiple products that do the same job. In detailing, reducing redundancy helps prevent confusion about which step matters most and cuts down wasted time.
glass cleaners
"The subject of glass cleaners has gotten brought up lately by a few of you. [609.6s] And so the funny thing about that is I started to think shoot, [614.4s] because I think the world's best glass cleaner is just stilled or deionized water, nothing else."
Glass cleaners are special cleaners made to wipe windows and windshields without leaving streaks. They’re meant to cut through oils and residue so the glass looks clear.

deionized water
"because I think the world's best glass cleaner is just stilled or deionized water, nothing else. [625.7s] So I would never launch a glass cleaner, right? [628.2s] There would never be a Jimbo's glass cleaner."
Deionized water is water that’s been cleaned of minerals. Because it has fewer minerals, it’s less likely to leave ugly water spots when it dries.

Tuft of Shell
"[780.9s] I'm going to use the complete cabin cleaner to wipe down the whole interior of my car. [784.4s] I'm going to vacuum it. [785.6s] And then I'm going to hit the whole thing with Tuft of Shell on the inside, right?"
“Tuft of Shell” is the name of a car-care product the host uses during their cleaning routine. They’re using it to make interior surfaces look nicer and add some protection.

cup holders
"[789.6s] And so I'll actually probably use all dressed up and I'll talk about it later. [793.0s] But I'm going off on a bit of a tangent here, but I'll use all dressed up in the cup holders [797.1s] because it makes the cup holders look really good."
Cup holders are the little tray areas where you put drinks. They get dirty fast, so cleaning them helps the whole interior look better.

dry foam method
"[799.8s] Obviously, I'm going to shine the tires. [802.6s] Obviously, I'm going to use my DNI's water as a glass cleaner. [806.1s] I'm going to do the dry foam method where I foam a dry car, wash it."
The “dry foam method” means you put foam on the car before it’s fully wet, so the foam can loosen dirt first. That way, you scrub less and are less likely to scratch the paint.

shine the tires
"[793.0s] But I'm going off on a bit of a tangent here, but I'll use all dressed up in the cup holders [797.1s] because it makes the cup holders look really good. [799.8s] Obviously, I'm going to shine the tires."
“Shining the tires” means putting a product on the tires so they look clean and dark. It’s mainly for looks, and it can also help protect the rubber a bit.
“Shining the tires” refers to applying a tire dressing to make the rubber look darker and more glossy (or satin, depending on the product). It’s mostly an appearance step, but some dressings also help repel dirt and slow drying/cracking.
pre-soak
"Because what it does, you can pre-soak the car, you could foam a dry car, you could do a contact wash, you could do a maintenance wash without any issue."
Pre-soak means you spray soap on the car first before you start washing. It helps loosen the dirt so you don’t have to rub as hard, which lowers the chance of scratching the paint.
A pre-soak is an initial step where you wet the car with soap (often via sprayer or foam) before touching it. The goal is to loosen dirt so you reduce the amount of scrubbing/contact needed during the wash, which helps prevent scratches.
PPF
"It's not going to damage your ceramic coating. It's not going to damage your PPF. It's not going to damage your paint sealant."
PPF is a clear protective film that you put on the paint to help prevent chips and scratches. Like ceramic coatings, it can be harmed by harsh cleaners.
PPF (paint protection film) is a clear protective film applied to vulnerable areas of a car’s paint. It’s designed to resist chips and light abrasion, but it can still be affected by strong chemicals or improper wash products.
paint sealant
"It's not going to damage your PPF. It's not going to damage your paint sealant. It's not going to strip your car."
A paint sealant is a protective coating you apply to your car’s paint. It helps water bead up and makes the car easier to clean, but harsh soaps can make it wear off sooner.
A paint sealant is a synthetic protective layer (often polymer-based) that sits on top of the paint to improve water beading and chemical resistance. Wash products that are too aggressive can shorten its lifespan or reduce its slickness.
foam cannon
"And that's where pre-soaking, whether you're using a pump sprayer with the Super Soapers or you're using a foam cannon and foaming a dry car."
A foam cannon is a tool you attach to your pressure washer to spray lots of soapy foam. The foam clings to the car and helps loosen dirt so you can rinse it off more safely.

road film
"This is without a doubt the safest way to wash your car, begin to remove the dirt, remove that bond from the road film, and you're not spraying on harsh chemicals that are going to potentially damage the soft sensitive surfaces of your car, whether that's now or down the line."
Road film is the grime that collects on your car as you drive. It’s not just dust—there are residues too—and loosening it first helps you wash without rubbing it into the paint.
Road film is the mix of contaminants that builds up on a car’s surface from driving—often including dirt, dust, oils, and other residues. Pre-soaking and proper wash chemistry aim to loosen this film so it can be rinsed away with less risk of scratching.
decon wash
"if I'm doing kind of like a decon wash. [940.7s] It is the best way to do like a no touch way to clean your rims,"
A decon wash is an extra-cleaning step meant to remove stubborn stuff that normal car soap doesn’t get. It’s usually for contaminants stuck to the paint or wheels, not just surface dirt.
A decon wash (short for decontamination) is a cleaning step aimed at removing bonded contaminants that regular soap may not lift. In detailing, it often targets iron fallout, rail dust, and other particles embedded on paint or wheels.
no touch way
"It is the best way to do like a no touch way to clean your rims, [944.9s] especially the inner barrels of your rims if you're struggling with that."

water spot remover
"Pure Magic Cleaner is great for that. [950.2s] It's also great as a water spot remover."
A water spot remover is for those hard-water marks caused by minerals. Regular car wash soap usually won’t remove them, so you need a cleaner made to dissolve the mineral deposits.

Pure Magic Cleaner
"Pure Magic Cleaner is great for that. [950.2s] It's also great as a water spot remover. [953.2s] And so again, it has dual purpose."

acid
"The active ingredient in all fallout and iron removers [968.4s] that is actually removing the embedded contaminants is an acid."

etch
"Please, it can etch. [1024.0s] Acid can etch glass specifically, and then you will need to polish that out separately."

clay bar
"[1031.5s] The third product I'm going to use is a clay bar or clay mitt, clay towel, clay disc, [1037.4s] just clay. [1038.8s] Clay that removes bonding contamination, something that, you know, [1042.4s] you're not going to be able to remove just by simply washing the car."
A clay bar is a tool you rub on paint to pull off stubborn grime that normal washing misses. It helps the paint feel smooth and makes wax or sealant stick better.

bonding contamination
"[1038.8s] Clay that removes bonding contamination, something that, you know, [1042.4s] you're not going to be able to remove just by simply washing the car. [1046.4s] And again, I don't care, and it doesn't matter if you use a traditional clay bar, [1050.8s] a clay towel, clay mitt."
Bonding contamination is dirt or fallout that sticks to the paint and can’t be washed off easily. If the paint still feels rough after washing, it’s often because this stuff is still there.
Bonding contamination refers to contaminants that adhere to and embed into the paint surface rather than sitting loosely on top. Because they’re “bonded,” they often remain after washing and require a clay bar to remove.
mechanical decontamination
"[1050.8s] a clay towel, clay mitt. [1052.6s] The point is mechanical decontamination, right? [1056.6s] Car washing will remove the loose dirt, but it does not remove"
Mechanical decontamination means you physically scrub or rub the paint to remove stuck-on contaminants. It’s different from just washing, because washing can’t always lift what’s bonded to the paint.
Mechanical decontamination is the process of removing contaminants from paint using physical action (like friction from a clay bar), not just chemicals or water. It targets contaminants that are bonded to the paint surface.
pores of the paint
"[1070.3s] The clay will remove that, the contamination that's stuck in the pores of the paint. [1074.9s] So this will help, obviously, make your paint feel smoother. [1082.5s] but it, when you get to the applying, the protection of the car, [1087.3s] if you remove these bonding contaminants, it will make that protection stick better, right?"
This is a metaphor for tiny texture in paint where grime can get stuck. If you don’t remove it, wax or sealant may not adhere as well.
“Pores of the paint” is a detailing way of describing how contaminants can lodge in microscopic surface texture. The idea is that once contaminants are embedded, you need decontamination (like clay) before protection can bond effectively.
micro-emulsion
"but this is where a micro-emulsion formula like Tuffa Shell, micro-emulsion, not just emulsion, [1132.1s] a lot of other ceramic sprays and paint protection products are just an emulsion formula."
A micro-emulsion is a type of liquid coating where the protective stuff is made into very tiny particles. Because they’re so small, they can get into the paint’s surface texture better and last longer.

Tuffa Shell
"but this is where a micro-emulsion formula like Tuffa Shell, micro-emulsion, not just emulsion, [1132.1s] a lot of other ceramic sprays and paint protection products are just an emulsion formula."
Tuffa Shell is a coating product meant to protect your car’s paint. The host says it uses a special “micro-emulsion” style so it can get into the paint’s surface better and last longer.

ceramic sprays
"a lot of other ceramic sprays and paint protection products are just an emulsion formula. [1139.6s] So they have bigger particle size, so the pores of the paint are all different sizes,"

one-step enhancement
"and that's why it made the lineup, [1232.4s] because even if you do a one-step enhancement on the car, a dark color car, it's going to make a [1244.3s] product, one liquid, not seventeen."
A one-step enhancement is when you use one polishing step to improve the paint’s look. The host says you usually don’t need several different polish stages to get good results.
