Also Keith Martin of Sports Car Market with his special offer, stuffing a seat and finding a "happy place." @Cadillac @Opel #SaturnCars #HoldenCars www.SportsCarMarket.com/testdrive6Kip Wasenko started as a summer intern in the 1960s and talks about the outrageous mid-engine car he designed that summer and how Bill Mitchell saw his drawing and convinced him not to go to art school after he graduated and hired him upon graduation. Kip finished his final college classes and started at GM in 1968. He was the only intern that summer who was offered a job at General Motors. Most of the designers were graduates of Art Center, which is why Kip was planning on going to the Art Center after he graduated college. But Bill Mitchell saw his work and felt he was ready as a car designer without going to Art Center.Kip talks about the early days of car designs and how everything was done with paper and pencil. He talks about his early renderings and how he would often exaggerate a particular part of the car and choose a view that emphasized a dramatic part of the design. They talk about how people often focus on a specific part of the car and how they would use focus groups to see what people liked or disliked.Kip and Stewart talk about the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette with split windows that was designed by Bill Mitchell and how much better and more valuable it is than the 1964 model year when they made it a single window for function, but it hurt the appearance and popularity. They review the importance of the styling of a car.When he started designing cars for General Motors he wasn’t allowed to go to the competitive studios because they didn’t want you influenced by their designs that way the brands had different appearances. He talks about how General Motors changed when Bill Mitchel took over because he made sure each brand stayed in their lane and had their own recognizable appearance.The 1967 Cadillac Eldorado is also a topic of discussion and Kip tells how he changed the direction of Cadillac. He realized their demographic was dying and Cadillac wasn’t changing with the times, and he designed a Cadillac concept car that was a high performance, luxury touring car built on the Corvette chassis to go after Jaguars and Mercedes. It was founded as a restoration shop that focused on British cars. The Pottstown location resides in the Pollock building. They are under new ownership and have expanded to the domestic market and are now restoring a wider range of cars. They also work on Alfa Romeos and German cars as well as Model A Ford and Packards. Due to the rising cost of complete restorations, they are now also doing partial restorations.Dave tells Stewart about a 1939 MG TB Roadster they recently built that has won awards at the Radnor Hunt Concours d’Elegance, Amelia Concours and the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance.He discusses how they keep their customers informed throughout the restoration process using software called Shop Monkey that allows them to share pictures and information. They even help get the finished car into car shows around the country and can ship the car to the events.They evaluate the car prior to restoration to let the customer know what they can expect and what needs to be done depending on the level of restoration they would like to have completed. Ragtops and Roadsters complete 3 to 5 restorations per year, but the number is dependent on what the car needs for the restoration.He discusses teaching young people who want to get into the hobby and career of auto restoration and why they try to pair the apprentice with an experienced journeyman technician. Ragtops and Roadsters have hired graduates from McPherson College, the only college that provides a Bachelor’s Degree in Auto Restoration. They also hire from Pennco Tech. He is currently writing a book tentatively titled The Last Barn Find Cobra, which is about finding a very rare original Shelby Cobra in a barn. It will also be in his Barn Find Hunter YouTube show and will tell the story of finding it. They discuss the story of the 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona that was found in a storage building in California and is now on display at the Simeone Museum. There were 998 Cobras built and it’s tough to determine how many still exist. And when a Cobra disappeared, people would build one and claim it was the one that disappeared, but sometimes the original was found and it was tough to know which car was actually the original. Tom talks about finding a GT40 in a barn. He also discusses driving his original Shelby Cobra and his 1952 Cunningham C-3 Vignale Coupe. He also discusses find an incredibly rare 1967 Ford Country Squire Station Wagon with a 428 V8 with a 4 speed, bucket seats and a console that was special ordered. In 1966 a father wanted a muscle car but his wife told him they needed a station wagon for the family, so he figured out how to special order a station wagon muscle car. In fact it took talking to a young Lee Iacocca to put the special order through and build the car.Before becoming a Barn Find Hunter, he was involved in Auto Racing and NASCAR as the PR Director for Charlotte Motor Speedway and is a graduate of the Humpy Wheels school of promotion and launched the Cotter Group in 1989.Conversation moves to barn finds and some of the most amazing cars and stories. He thought they found a 289 Cobra owned by Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys, but it turned out Dennis owned a different Cobra.
