Real Road Racing in Mexico with Apex Auto Works and a 2012 Camaro is in the showroom!
An automobile race on 'public' roads is not something you see everyday - particularly what amounts to a run what ya' brung event. We ran across a really cool looking race car years ago and couldn't figure out where you could run such a vehicle, which is how we met Richard Tomlin from Apex Auto Works in Alvin, Texas.Richard went on to explain that the car was 'designed' for a road race south of the border call the 'Chihuahua Express'. With the help of local law enforcement, the public roads are closed long enough for a daily pass by racers from all over the world. These are public roads in Mexico, not prepped race tracks and there is no time for a practice lap. Any practice is only to learn the lay of the land while engaging local traffic. Sometime it is fun to get out of the t-shirts and shorts for a little while, particularly when it is an automotive event. Coming up is the Beaumont Main Street Gala that is being put on with the help of a number of groups and this year, it will include several aspects. In addition to being centered at the Historic Jefferson Theatre in Downtown, there will be a vintage auto show with many constumed characters on hand. The Hagertys' Members Drive Club will have a member history drive around the area where the Spindletop Gusher is considered the start of the oil boom in Texas. Inside the Jefferson Theater, attendees will be able to view a silent movie with a fully restored theatre organ playing along. Along with the movie and dinner/drinks, Greg Riley will be doing a talk regarding his book on the area, and he might mention the 1931 Caddilac he will have on display.
