They’re saying that off-road trips can easily turn into overnight trips. So if you’re new, plan like you might need camping gear and be prepared to stay out longer than expected.

cantilevers

starting a vehicle in gear

And when they started it, it was in gear and it rolled off of the top of little sluice and down into the sluice box."
This is when you turn the vehicle on but it’s not actually in a safe neutral position. The car can start moving right away, which is especially risky off-road.
Starting a vehicle while it’s in gear is a dangerous mistake because the drivetrain can immediately apply torque to the wheels. In off-road terrain, that can lead to sudden rolling—especially if the vehicle is on a slope or near obstacles.
four low
"it was thought that the vehicle was in neutral, but it was in gear in four low."
“Four low” is a low-speed 4-wheel-drive mode meant for crawling over tough terrain. If the truck is started while it’s in that gear, it can roll forward or backward unexpectedly.
“Four low” refers to a low-range setting in a 4-wheel-drive transfer case. Low range multiplies torque for slow, controlled crawling, but if the vehicle is started in gear, it can move unexpectedly even at idle.
manual transmission
"if you're in control of the vehicle, if you're in the vehicle and you have your hand on the, you know, the manual transmission, your foot on the, you know, the manual transmission, your foot on the brake, the clutch or whatever"
A manual transmission is a car where you choose the gears yourself. You use a clutch pedal to help switch gears smoothly.

"And then I like to have people try out and put them in scenarios where their front locker is going to make or break an obstacle or a rear locker is going to make them make or break an obstacle."
