to do some car updates as we usually do.

And there's a pretty big car update was probably talked about last week, but I wasn't here. So I'm going to talk about it

now. And it's not mine.

It's Scotty R 31. Skyline Sedan is on.

Day. I never thought I'd see the day.

Scotty, I I just wanna see, like, I wanted to clarify a few things with you before we get started.

two big updates tonight. Not only just the one, but two

and yeah. Yeah.

It's it's just you know it's it's car happening individual players are like I don't know I don't know if you if you if you're eating differently is is your diet.

Car updates. R 31 is on the road on club

plates. Which club did you end up going

with for that? It is called the Red Plate Club

of Victoria. I've heard about them and they

exist goals for the purpose of doing club plates.

Yes, my goodness, so easy to deal with.

The website says absolutely everything you need.

Follow it step by step. You cannot.

That's what I've heard and. The step by step.

King, like Phoenix Club, is the same.

They're just literally sort of there for for that.

There's specific office hours and you rock up and it's like stamp, stamp that would be great to get your plate done, you know. So that's great now.

It's really good fix. Rd High.

Point to deal with. So, so how's the driving school?

Like you've taken it out. You've got plates.

The plates are on the car. You've sorted it out.

I haven't taken it out. Oh my.

God. Bring it to my house right now.

I wanna have a crack in that thing.

So yeah, I've got the plates. When do I get that?

When I put the plates on, I think I only just got them on probably Thursday. Yeah.

Then put on Thursday, UM. And then obviously my next big

update will happen. I'll talk about in a second on

Saturday. So yeah, I just, I had just

haven't been able to. It doesn't.

It's not here where I live at the moment.

It's just that my parents place not too far away, but I couldn't take it out then at the time because I'd have to move a couple cars. They had some cars around and

stuff like that. So I was like, OK, couldn't take

it out for a spin on that day. On the Thursday when I got the

plates it was a bit late too anyway and then uh, busy Friday, busy Saturday, Sunday was busy and then back to work again.

So. Yeah.

Haven't been able to just yet, but I think last week all I mentioned was that I got the roadworthy, wasn't it?

That was it. Correct.

Yeah, so, so, so you said you had the roadworthy.

Not last year, a week before. So that's that's all the

listeners know was that I had the roadworthy in my hands, but now it's got plates sitting on there and I've got me a little log book. Yeah.

Now, what's this second Car update, Scotty, that I I know I've heard whispers, but I don't know much about it.

Wow, this one has got mysteries. Talk about.

Take you back back I think maybe two weeks ago so it's not too too long ago, but a car popped up on car sales when I was flicking through and it is a 2010 Toyota Blade Master G, something that only pops up in Japan so you couldn't couldn't get them anywhere else. They come with a 3 1/2 litre V6

or they also come in a 4 cylinder.

Basics is the same motor Toyota used in a lot of cars.

A lot. The 2G.

Orions and whatnot. Camrys.

I think some of them. Yeah, Lexus.

Lexus Yeah, it's a it's a well used engine and very silky and very grunty. Yeah, it's Start engine.

So this is a roller hatch basically with that engine shoved into it at the factory, not sold all the blade.

And this particular car, are you saying was already in the country? Already in the country and so

they have a series one and series two.

I've got the Series 2 and the transmission and thing is a lot better, has some little extra bits and pieces.

It's all round much better. So it's pretty hard to get that

one. It was the very first of the

Series 2 and also I think I'll have to double check underneath it. But I think I don't have to

worry about the recall on that two GR, which was the recall of the oil lines from memory that were plastic and they changed them to metal in 2010 minus the very first ones from 2010.

I'll tell you that I tell you, would have been done, Yeah.

So I'd say it's been done, but it wasn't too hard to have a look underneath at some point. Yeah, I won't talk about

anything else about it yet because I've got tonnes of booklets to flick through. I'm gonna talk about that in

depth in a moment. But anyway, we had a look at it.

David and Matt came out too. I brought all the.

Podcasters. Yeah, that's my partner as well.

She came out to have a look at the car as well.

Testing very, very clean. Really nice.

Like Pearl, White took it for a test drive.

Felt saw it just effortless, the way it just went compared to, you know, the Subaru. We're kind of waiting for bit of

boost to get going this just and off you go nice and smooth so it's really nice and. All wheel drive.

Just front wheel drive, OK? Yeah.

Did they come as an all wheel drive?

Oh, so don't quote me. There might have been an oil

drive one, but not with the 3 1/2 litre V. 6 alright, OK.

There's a fourth cylinder, 1/2. As always, as I was saying to

Scotty, like when for the test drive you close your eyes, it feels like you're an Orion. Like it sounds like an Orion it

Yeah, right. It it quite literally drives

like an Orion. It's.

Like, hang on, this. I mean, Corolla, this doesn't

make. Sense, yeah.

Yeah, like a high end Corolla. It's actually it's it's so much

so I said this to you as well. It's so much better put together

than the crawls we got because like I said a few times in this podcast, like that era Corolla wasn't their best Corolla in terms of like the ones we got in Australia.

But that one feels like a completely different car.

It feels solid. The doors feel nicer, the

materials are better, full leather material.

It's it's a really nice jewels on climate, really nice car, like a really nice car and you know it's it's completely talking cheese to the ones we get now.

When you see that car, you'd be like actually this is complete like you know clearly wise is a massive step up.

It's just. Looking forward to having a

crack in neck, huh? Yep, I'm looking forward to

letting you all have a go. So during that time I put my.

So I said Yep, I'll buy it. And then he he still had to just

finish getting it, the compliance and also the Reggie in that for me. So I only just picked it up on

Saturday was a big day when I picked that one up.

Melbourne. So I went over there, picked up,

drove her back. Traffic sucked, but it's nice

and comfy. I'll tell you what I missed.

I missed Light FM. Yeah.

The Japanese car that only goes up to 89.9 you can listen to

Light FM Fantastic. And you can get banned with

extended things that that will take your bandwidth out.

Yeah you can. At the moment I'm just using.

It's got auxiliary plug and everything so I can still listen to my music, but if I want the radio I got the listener app.

Yeah. So if I still want the radio, I

can just use At the moment, yeah, I I didn't realise when I got it, it came with. OHS server went.

So, so, so but just bearing this in mind Ed, these weren't these weren't shown in the car when we went and looked at it like ohe, it doesn't come with it. So yeah, but the fact that it

came with at the end is really is really.

I I just assumed you know he must have had it sitting somewhere else so I didn't bother asking cause I just assumed every time I get one they never.

options. So I was like, yeah, I just

didn't even bother asking. Just hold it there.

We're just hearing Scotties updates but if, because you just joined us, Scotty, the 30 ones on the on the on club plate that's on the road only happened and he's got his new car so we were just talking about his new car.

Now so here we go, the massive rundown.

So the first thing that it's got that's not original cause I know Ed loves original but here is the biggest upgrade and this is where I've been sending some emails to try and get some information about but endless make breaks.

Right now I've got two of these because here we go.

So it's a big I guess booklet on both and they also have these little licenced cards, data licence cards and it says the shipment day on it as to when they'll purchase and shipped out to the buyer and it is a massive break kit for the front and the rear. So big callipers and having a

look, I don't know, I think those rotors maybe two piece or something. Oh, well, yeah.

Try normous. Is it fair to say that a Corolla

with that much power was a bit underdone in the breaking department from the factory and they've they've wrecked about that? No, I don't.

I don't think so. I reckon the the brakes that it

came with weren't weren't too bad to begin with.

I think they'd be adequate, but like, I think that especially with a big 3 1/2 litre V6 at the front of the front end of it and all that power, it probably would have wanted to stop a bit, a bit better so. I know, right?

It's it's also, says Scotty. It's highly likely been been on

a track. Could have been for a long, huh?

Because these breaks here, when I was kind of starting to go through some of these documents, which I'll quickly pull out now, there's well, there's one in here that was a little bit contrasting. Panel.

OHE Yeah, that's delivery to the owner and it mentions that we write on a lot of our products that says not suitable for Rd use track only Edward might. Be correct?

And I was like, OK, well that's rather interesting.

So it's got track breaks in it. So it's got big, massive breaks

that will stop you in no time. I've got boxes and I've got the

original brakes too, so everything.

That came with the car. That came with the car, so I've

still got the original brakes if I want to swap back over and things like that. And I thought maybe if I put in

the part numbers that were on the box, I get nothing.

Hmm. Comes up nothing.

Any kind of part numbers trying to get information.

So I'm like, well, if I wanted to change the discs or pads, I got no. Clue.

So I've sent a. Couple emails out to try and

track down what's going on. Is the company called?

Endless. Yes.

So surely they would have a record of this stuff or what pads we've done? You'd think so, but their

websites pretty trash. Where are they based?

Japan. Or their.

Japanese clan, but they're all around the world, so it's, you know, breaks from anywhere and everywhere so.

Yeah. So I sent an email.

To one of the like overseas one for anybody that's kind of connected Japan. So if you talk English they'll

be able to help me out there hopefully and track that down without import Monster on it to try and help me as well.

They had a look and there's the part numbers doesn't exist anymore, so there has to be some pads or discs that would fit.

How they would be? Seems to be an endless

nightmare. I just find it really, really

interesting. I wonder what it's connected to

you like. Is it specifically made just for

the blade as like a kind of limited run or is that a similar setup to another Toyota or something break system?

I'd say sorry I'd say you know like the bracketry and everything to put it on would be blade specific.

But I I I would also but I I would think that the the the actual discs and the pads would be just like one of their ones that they that they would sell off the shelf.

So they wouldn't make just a a calliper that that can only have that type of pad for that car like that they wouldn't do that that makes no that makes no logical sense.

So quite often like with a lot of Brembo brakes and stuff like the the the the pads are you know water for different cars and the colour is Dolly for those cars.

The actual break pads and calliper and sorry and and discs are kind of you know kind of universal or or like you know a certain size and they they produce and they they keep along for all the all the models. So I'd say that the pad would be

definitely easy to get and I the the the disc as well the disc as well if not there's definitely some shops down here that that that you just give them you give them a break and be like oh we can make that that's no issue. So there's there's, there's

always, there's definitely options.

Don't, don't stress too much about that.

Yeah, I was just finding it very, very interesting about what's what's the go with that and what they use.

But stops pretty well. I'm interested to see how many

Pistons it's got, actually. Kelp is pretty big pot.

Callipers, probably. Yeah, I was thinking maybe 4

front to rear, probably 02 was my reckoning and idea and that moves us to some more stuff. So this is the actual hand

booklet here. Everything that.

This is the original one for the car that the dealer.

Yeah, that's got everything, all the features and.

All in Japanese. He has stolen beautiful

Japanese. Tells you how to change the

battery in your remote clicker and things like that.

Lovely. And it's also got some

documentation of some services and how they do the servicing.

Yes. Little mascot there and it just

kind of goes through like a ticking some everything they checked and ticket. It sounds like at least it's had

an owner that knew what it was and, you know, had some sort of a clue. Even if they had that, we can.

They had and these are legit options straight from Toyota.

So inside the car the light at the top is an LED LED light and you can actually change the colour of it inside it.

We modern lot of new cars have that.

So I can have it white or blue and then change the brightness of it too the car that was fitted.

So I've I've got that. Before Unbelievable.

From Toyota, Legit aftermarket stuff.

Jet legit. Factory we've got legit what you

cast, Scotty. 2010. Ten.

OK, that's what. Yeah, 14 years old.

Ish now. This one doesn't have it anymore

on the card, but it used to have remote start.

Hmm. Any K's on this car, Scotty?

109,000. 109, that's pretty good.

It's been a hard 109, Real hard. Yeah, to check your heels or

whatever they are. Wise mode is a very strong.

They are very good. Good.

Engine. The next one is from TRD which

is the TRD. Development, isn't it?

We got that one there that was installed and fitted.

What is it? What they put on it.

The third, the push button start but the normal, so he's got that one. And then I was looking up this.

They're called quality warts when I first saw it could.

Be quality, Quality. Thoughts.

From the look of it, I think it's being coated the car in something. Ohhhhh yeah, like a protective

coating. Yeah, when I used the translate,

it was kind of giving me that vibe, is what that was.

Yeah, some bit of wax on it. Yeah, there's some coating of

some sort. Yeah, I was gonna say it's the

main mall. Got him.

The mall. The mall.

Yeah, and did you say it was the metallic?

White Pearl, White Pearl. Like, yeah, so the paint would

be probably pretty good. Pearl White holds up well.

It does. It looks really nice.

Who can and what colours the inside?

Just like a black, blackish kind of colour.

Leather. Uh, yeah.

I mean, it is leather. I don't know if it's real

leather really. But.

Yeah. Little pointed leather appointed

seat. Leather.

It's like leather. I'm not gonna start like a bit

of kind of on the dash has kind of got like a bit of carbon fibre, but then in the middle part going up is like a a fake wood would finish up. And what's happening with the

Subaru Scotty now that this new kids on the block?

It will be sold. For sales by swap and sale

section. It will be for sale.

I just want to clean it up a bit, just repaint a couple little bits like the plastic stuff so.

Do the head gasket. But that's all good.

I don't need to do that stuff. And and what do you, you have to

tell me what you paid for this blade, but I sort of want a ballpark because I don't know that market is it, is it a 25 grand car or is this like a 45 grand car?

No, they look. They're usually under 20.

Oh, really? That's cheap.

That's pretty Really gonna find one.

You're not going to find 1 / 20, no.

Yeah, that's that's quite a lot of machine for not silly money.

Yeah, it really is. I like it.

And there's there's a whole log on someone driving one from Queensland all the way down to SA and then all the way back to Queensland again. That's on the Iron Chef imports.

It's a three part blog and he's just saying how perfect it was.

No dramas driving that whole journey from Queensland to Adelaide and all the way back, you know, Right.

Ah. Yeah, there is serious one had

the hand one and then it's off to the to the foot one.

So you have the big break. Which is kinda, It feels like

feels like those electric handbrakes, because when you pull it at the castle, moves that little bit.

Hmm. It kind of feels like that odd

odd feeling compared to what I'm used to, but that's OK.

Well this is pretty good car updates Scotty.

I'm this is a complete turnover almost of.

It's a new Scott, I told you. Right.

Still haven't even finished, Still going.

Sorry, Scott. Sorry, he's pretty much the

whole show, I think. Just going to open the blinds.

That's what's. Banging.

The next one which all these are like legit from Toyota, is the folding mirrors. So when you lock the car they

electrically fold in. That was actually an option

which I didn't know and the person said Yep to that.

And that's the installation and installation guide that was done. Well, what?

When? When we saw the car, it was

pretty well equipped. I was pretty well optioned.

Yeah. Yeah.

So it's all these little things that that actually helped me get a better car. Alright, does it have a sunroof?

No, no sunroof on this. Not that well optioned.

That. I'm not sure if it was an

option. I'm not sure if I've seen any

with the sunroof action. Probably not.

And then if you remember last two weeks ago, David gave me the optional extras booklet that you can get and I was kind of talking about with the Modellista parts that they got on the car. Actually they got the front

bumper as well because they got the documents here.

OK, that opens up and tells you where all the screws go, how to install it. It's so good.

It's got everything all here for the front bumper.

More of like a front lip, really.

Yeah, so that was the Modellista front lip that they installed and model this star rear bumper attachment.

So I've got the documentation for that, and just randomly for the boot map that it came with, the blade boot maps.

There were still some extras on the car, I just don't have documentation for it. So like when you open the front

for the front door and the seals on the bottom, they light up and say blade. So that was an optional extra

full full blade car mats front and rear too.

That was an optional extra um and on the auto shift knob is the TRD shift knob. That that was a an extra also.

And yeah, that's that's everything in here.

Did he have the past? So sorry, Did he have the

original bill the the the purchase price for the original purchase of the car? No, no.

No. Don't have that one,

unfortunately. Did it come with two original

keys? I guess I do have two keys,

which is fairly rare too. Usually end up with one, but

yeah, I've got. A well looked after track car.

Yep. I don't see why you take one on

a track, but I feel that I reckon one of those.

There's Bill for show. It'll just down downtown Tokyo.

Maybe. Could have been got the big

breaks on it and just kind of. Breaks another colour, like can

you see that it's got big brakes on it?

Can you ever? Yeah, Well, then it might have

been booked for show, you know, it might have been.

So the wheels stored, the rims wouldn't be factory, so that there'd be aftermarket. Aftermarket rims don't know what

brand they are. They came originally on 17th but

is currently on 18. So I assume we went eighteens

because it's the only way to fit the brakes.

You could probably get seventeens to fit the brakes in there. There's still a bit of room

between there. It's less tighter than it is on

the 31, that's for sure. The 31 is.

I couldn't even fit a $0.05 coin between that gap, I reckon, but

yes, a bit more of a gap gap on the.

Exciting, Scott. Scotty I'm really happy for you

man. This is it's a it's like you've

gotten a really good, good example and you know you have plenty of years of enjoyable 2 GR motoring to gum.

Yeah, it's the newest car I've ever owned, 2010.

Well, there you go. Moving along to Rob Carr

updates. Took the last time I any update

was highballs, highball, cars and coffee with you you guys.

Yeah, the bins there. Yeah, Took the bins there.

Ran well. Missed out on Hanging Rock on

the weekend. Got a better offer?

Not from that, just being sanding and blocking back blazer parts. So actually rang up the colour

spec technical department. They replaced the entire batch

of paint. They be cheap.

Well, that's amazing. What life is this for?

Is this for yours, Matt? None son in law.

He's parents had one from Brand. New OHV, that one.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I we got the Rs front or side

skirts, boot spoiler or hatch spoiler, Rs bumper and we've got an aftermarket front lip for it, but it looks pretty good so it should come together pretty well once it's all finished off.

So nice tinkering with that, mainly.

Haven't had any more council complaints, which is pretty good. Absolutely.

Yeah, that's pretty much it from my my friend.

Pretty quiet. We had a good look at your your,

your merkle at cars and coffee and we had.

What did you think Edward? Did you?

Did you think it's a good example?

Yes, it is. You're the Mercedes aficionado

of the show. I said yeah, Rob's like I'm more

a Mercedes aficionado than 80s. It's a lovely car and as I said

on the day to Rob it's very the interiors got a lovely patina to it. It's it's not concourse but it's

certainly not too ratty. It's just a nice usable stage of

of its interior. The paint colour is a really

nice colour that suits the car and I think Robbie said it's not a it's not the original colour for that car but it just suits it. It's a it's a sort of a an off

greeny white. I would.

Just ivory green, isn't it so? Yeah, but with a bucket of green

tipped into it, I started. Area vinyl or leather?

It's not that car never wouldn't, yeah.

That cars properly. That's alright I reckon.

Kind of a rough looking leather interior.

Still still looks nice on an old car if you get that smile.

I like that old. Beautiful.

It's not yet. Yeah.

Yeah. Rough.

I just call it, you know, it's got some wear to it.

You know it's been. Yeah, just the usual wear.

But does that really cool highlight That's?

Actually the seats don't match to aware of the upper part of the cars. I think the seats are probably

better than what the the dashes or dash pad is.

Yeah, so the seats and carpets are in pretty good nick.

Dash needs a bit of work, the pad and the the timber work.

The timber, yeah. But you know, you start that

motor and it just was, it's a lovely sounding straight six there. They're, as I said, on the day,

they're refined. Yet there's a trickiness to them

and a robustness to them. And certainly they last for

years and years and years. You know, you look after one of

those sixes and it'll do a lot of miles.

I think someone said to me years ago that the bores on those Ben Sixes from that 60s era were good for three reballs, you know, So that's three lots of going out and putting oversized Pistons in. Now if you look after one of

those, you'll probably get three 400,000 miles out of it, you know, and that's miles, not kays.

And then and then you do another and then like you'd be going a long time if you did 3 reballs and one of them.

It's gonna outlive me, so. That's the thing they they will.

So it's a it's a lovely, usable, lovely usable car that that looks $1,000,000 but when you get up close you realise it's not original here. It's not original there, it's

got that doesn't have original suspension data but that makes it a great value daily driver like and you're not it's not so concourse that you're scared of it.

You know you you punt that out on a Dirt Rd when you take it to wherever you're going. You know, you know, you know

you're crying about it if it gets a shopping centre a little digging. It you take the cold pack and it

wins all German day. And he did, like, like, you

know. So Rob was that he delivered

card. Yeah, it is, Yeah.

OK, so because you were saying they didn't make many of them in in in right hand drive? About 300 apparently in the

300C. Good, so they did them in the

220 AC I think the 250CC and the 280CC and the 300 SE.

So the couple of different sizes of straight 6IN those, but they were all limited in numbers. There weren't.

There weren't a lot made of any of them, which is always why a 2 door bends was was always worth more than the 4 door bends which and. Was that it?

It just went to 300. Yeah, yeah.

I think, yeah, they went to three. 100 I mean they did do

the 280 SE 3.5 which is the V8 in the but badge does a 280.

That was the biggest motor they did in the coops.

But yeah, great era of Benzi. I love that shape.

Big fan of that car. Put it on the button.

Bang. Just so you know it was silky

smooth and it said it sounded great and exhaustive.

It sounded really nice on it too.

Yeah, little. Rust to them.

They do, yeah. Yeah.

And they drive like they drive more modern than what they look.

So they I remember my 197280 S when I my friend first drove it.

I knew how good they were. But he got behind the wheel when

I was 19. You know, I bought this thing

and he came back and said, oh, that drives really well.

He was surprised a that they got as much power as they did out of a 2.8 litre straight six. It's not a big six, It's not a

huge motor and it's a heavy car yet, so they get along nicely.

The transmissions are probably a little bit agricultural, but they certainly shift like they're meant to when they're healthy. And mine was good.

And he said the other thing that really surprised me was the steering. You'd think that at all bends of

sort of big old curvy vertical headlight bends would be a real boat. But the steering is really

sharp. It's, I think it's recirculating

ball steering. But it was it was pretty direct

and I'd had the kingpins done in mind.

Maybe that helped. But my friend, my friend sort of

commented on wow, you you point and it goes where you point at this thing. It's like it's finger light on

the steering wheel. The power steering is super

light, but it's it's quite direct.

It is and you wouldn't think it would be direct.

You sort of imagine it would be more like an American barge, where it where you're wallowing around and there's no field, but it bends, as were pretty precise.

I remember you telling me like even even when I had my my 124 you were you were like benders always drive well like like like all the eras are bends. They always they always had that

you know they felt solid and comfortable but when you turn them they they they do handle surprisingly for their side always remember you saying that to me and you're saying how like the wheels always used that used to Camberwell unturned and it's like it's stuff that you don't get on like other stuff like that when they did it they did it proper and that always kind of kind of range true. So every every Benzyl driven

they've got they got that sense of compliance but they they always feel lighter you know around town and it's it was for for carpet size it's it's phenomenal so.

I often shrink it. Like dad had the W126S class for

10 years. We had that car and it's a big,

you know, huge bonnet S class and isn't even the long wheelbase one. You know it was an SE not an SL,

but that car always surprised around town, super light and just you just comfortably waft about but then get it on the highway up to speed and punt it through stuff and they just hunker down and they do what they're meant to.

And I drove get back from the Grampians at you know 160 on some back roads and it was pissing with rain.

And I just remembered, God, this thing feels better and better the faster I go. But that's what they're designed

to do, the design to sit on autobahns at 182 hundred, you know, And yeah, you forget that, you forget how much went into them in terms of the injured knee ring.

newest car I've ever owned. Now it's not a keeper, it's one

of my stock cars. But I came across through a

friend of a friend, a 2021 Hyundai Tucson current shape 1.6

turbo all wheel drive SUV. It's the elite model, has the

leather, it's done 29,000 K she's pretty fresh.

So I, you know, it's got the lane change and the cameras and when nothing is done about 6 kilometres in it.

But yeah, it's like, well this is a bit too nice for me.

So hence I won't be keeping it. I'll be advertising that soon.

But yeah, I I did think when I sort of locked it up in the garage and walked inside, I. Thought Oh, I think that, I

think. That takes the cake as the

newest car ever to come through my hands.

So that's the 1.6 Turbo. So that's the same engine that's

in the I-20 and a few other of their of their products.

Yeah, it's a good little engine that like.

It goes well and all wheel drive, you know, it's it's nice and grippy in the wet and what have you.

So I think you can get them as a front drive.

So yeah, I, yeah, I'm, I'm a fan of that car.

It seems like a good thing. The alongside that I've sold the

Ford Focus that I had to a friend of a friend that was a little 52,000 KO, 6 hatch. So super low mileage and really

a very tidy original little car. So he just wanted a car to run

to the station and back and you know go to the gym.

It wasn't the main family transport.

And he catches the train to work and, you know, so perfect car for that, you know, cheap, low miles, comfy.

It's got crews, got airbags, It's it's a nice little thing.

So that's gone. I've still got my 01 Civic hatch

that's been getting some caster bushes done in the front end and it's going in for roadworthy Friday.

And then I'll find a buyer for that.

Holden Barina LS. Hatch, that's going to be one of

the last ones they sold. Yeah, I think they ran to 18.

The Barinas. It's a metallic black 4 door

hatch, 1.6 auto. I wouldn't normally touch a car

of that ilk because I don't really like Holdens.

Today. And the cruisers are terrible,

and I don't recommend them and I sort of lump this in the same basket as the cruisers. And but my friend in the

industry said, no, no, no, The Mariners are actually pretty good, a lot better than the cruise.

And I was like, alright, now this thing's done, 27,000 K from you. So this is not a, this is not an

old car by any means. It's an 18, 27 on it, you know.

So at the price I got it for, I thought, yeah, right, all have a punt on that because it's so tidy and I've driven it around the last few days over the weekend and it's a lot better than what I thought, you know, it's really solid, the engines punchy, the seats comfy, it's got reverse camera, it's got beepers and Bluetooth and all that stuff in it.

And I just thought, this is not a rattly, horrible, awful feeling car. This is, this is actually quite

a nice feeling little car. So.

They are actually not a bad thing the the last of those ones. Hope the buying public agrees

with us and someone comes out of the woodwork and and wants it.

So I've advertised that car, but yeah, I mean, if you came to look at it, I think you'd, I think you'd buy it because there's not, there's nothing. Hold out your hand.

Yeah, there's nothing really. You can pick on it if you just

if you if you rang up about it, you're happy to come and buy Marine and well yeah, that's the car.

end gentleman now last time we were discussing on this show we were we had quite a different panel except Scotty was on the last time we were discussing winners of car wheels car of the Year which which I think now is a bit of a it's kind of a nothing award but previously it was it was an award that was you know quite prestigious award and and people used to talk about it heavily and it's a really really important thing for car companies. year and the year that we got to was to 9th 2008 so 2000 and so that was the last one we got was the called Euro they now now this is when 2009 happened and this is when Volkswagen's domination of everything car related before people woke up and said though these things are terrible kind of kind of came came into fruition so 2009 was the GG Waggon Volkswagen Golf Mark 6. So so that was that was a car

that came out the mark five was was very well received it was you know it came with the new EH 888 engine and DSG and all that stuff. So this was kind of like an

evolution of that wasn't really a revolution was more of an evolution of it. They they they kind of look very

similar and they said oh how they always praised how good it drove how well it handled it's comfort it's build quality so and that carried on for which we all of these two together 2010 Volkswagen Polo Mark 5. So it it got you know the the

smaller version the small little brother which is pretty much the same award for the money kind of 1.

little bit, it was a bit of car. So they they removed something

like 500 odd components from the manufacturing process to the on the the G6 UM so there was less things to go wrong with it.

So that was one good thing. About you'd go wrong, Rob.

They went very wrong. Yeah, coil packs, airbags and

all sorts of other things. And window commutators, yeah, a

whole lot of things used to go wrong with them, but but they were better than the goal. I thought the G5 was like

something real good like I was. I knew they weren't bad car.

The way they closed, the way they drove.

Everything's fantastic about them and just nothing but troubles after 3-4 years. Yeah.

I wanted my dad to buy one. I was a big fan of, always a big

fan of diesel and I remember when the the five came out with the little common rail diesel in it and the DSG was all the talk of the town back then. You know this sharp shifting

transmission and I was all on board.

I said get a little DS, G, G5, you know like as you're working back car. I was really campaigning for

that. And you're right, they felt

great. They look great.

The quality felt really good when you got in it and the cloth and the doors and all that stuff and and then they just disintegrate. Um, so you can't, you can't

always tell when a car's new, as we've said before, how, how it's gonna stand. And that's why our friend from

Re Driven, you know, is so good, because you find out all those things from his channel. You do?

ragging on Volkswagen at the moment it's just yeah it was I don't know like it was kind of like the the people's eyes were closed as to so who who who they do now So a few of my friends sent me a video from from just these these mechanics and they're getting interviewed and they're like what are the worst cars in like and quite literally 90% of them said Volkswagen these are all independent mechanics like Volkswagen selected just. Doing random TikTok and it

basically was it was funny it was a the mechanic workshop on just the just surprising his mechanics.

He goes, hey Steph and she's like Oh well whatever.

You know she's sitting in the car what's the what's the worst car you can buy. And she goes Volkswagen and he

goes, why? And she goes because they're

shit, you know and then goes to the other mechanic.

Hey John what's the worst case you can buy you know.

And I think one of them said Jeep.

One of them said Sanyang And then in the second one said folksy and then he goes at the end and I'm going to add in the Land Rover So he goes, there you go.

Just don't buy boxy Jeep Land Rover or a sand young.

Did you know there was that whole side with my friends GI that he bought new service on the Dock 1 owner?

Not a race driver at all. This guy you know, very

sympathetic mechanically. And yet the thing still

combusted itself, you know, and it was lack of oil that was the can slapping around in the head because there was lack of oil feed to the cause. When they pulled it apart, you

know, something had sheared off in the head and oil wasn't getting to that, that canvas that rolled around.

So it sounded like a diesel because it was just slapping around with no lubrication. And then they put metal filing

through the entire motor that that's the end of it, that's that's by Charlie, you know. So you know, it's just like, but

when when the guy, the mechanic explained, well this is what's happened, this is what's caused it, you just think how does that happen? You know, this is this is not

someone who's mistreated their car.

It can happen with any car. No Toyota used to have some sort

of that, some of those issues with metallurgy, just it wasn't hard and properly wasn't forged or whatever.

And something fails apart from that.

But this is a YouTuber saying about Euro cars.

They're no good for any hot climates.

They just don't like hot. There's too many plastic

components. There's new things.

And so just things start breaking off it.

Radiator cooling, cooling systems go go.

literally it like you will find out that can accompany companies will do that and you look at how many Mazda threes and Toyota Corollas from from 22,009 2010 same year as these cars are so much better mechanically like fine mechanically perfect and then you get a GTR with low case your poppet motors because the because the camshaft got you know stabbed the oil just for some bullshit reason it's like it that that doesn't happen on a on a you know on a on a on a Japanese car it it and it's I

mean to be fair it doesn't happen on some yeah and but like they rectify but it's funny like when you hear people talk about books and they just class all the rubbish all they are they're all rubbish because like this if there was a specific model I don't buy that one but you can buy these ones are fine they just all classified as like do not touch like stay away with a 10 foot pole and and for me that that that just personifies a brand like in in it in itself which makes it which makes it really really sad. The Ranger Rock. What's the next?

What's the next car on the list? The next ones are really

interesting one, it was Honda's you know Honda one again.

So like this is kind of like the last little big patch because they they they they kind of start some good cars at this point before they went kind of a little bit downhill.

They it was the Honda CR Z, which lies, yeah, very, very likeable car hybrid. You can get him as a manual or

auto and they kind of look, they're kind of like CRX but not a CRX if that makes sense, like they were.

They are a little wedge that bit more curvy than a CRX.

But the fact that they were running mild hybrids back then, you know, this isn't a plug in hybrid.

This is just like a Toyota system where you know, the battery gives you extra boost and it regenerates as you drive and whatever remarkable little car.

My friends got one and he really likes it and quite ahead of their time. You know, Toyota weren't even

talking the word hybrid back then and the Honda were doing it, you know, in in an ordinary world would call an ordinary carpet. They did do it in the Civic as

well at the time and and so CRZ was, it was a bit left of centre as a winner. I think most people didn't know

what it was, but as a as a package it was really well executed. Yeah, it was.

It was well executed. But the, you know, this is a

case in point of windshield car. Yeah, not a big seller.

You know, like it it it, it doesn't.

Necessarily mean. It's a big seller, but it's

something that represents the, yeah, the best of all those categories or whatever. So in hindsight, it's been good

to see Z. Again, most people still don't

know what they are, but the ones that do and the ones that bother to drive it are are are always converted and like this is a cracker. Now I think now and again they

go with something quirky and this is one of them, something out of left field, something different.

Even the design of it is something completely different.

That's what you're used to, especially back in, you know, 2011, so. I'm a fan of that car.

Know that car as well are really like them.

Every time I say it I'm like Oh yes I did but like very few have been they really lovely blue too like which is which is really nice colour. But fun fact our launch was

delayed here in Australia because of the earthquake in in Japan. So they're kind of delayed the

the arrival and earthquake tsunami from Japan but we got it in two grades. We got in sport and luxury

grades are pretty much identical except the sport was only available with a manual and the luxury was only available with CBT and you got sat and have it on a roof But yeah it didn't start well even though it was really well received and and and said this is a this is a cracker you know they they they pulled the they pulled in 2015 I think cause only sold 16 of them in 2014. So kind of a bit you know kind

of a bit sad but really cracking up.

Yeah, it's a niche car and it's I suppose it always was going to be. It's a 2 door.

It's impractical, it relatively expensive for a for a little car. And 35 ish grand.

Yeah, exactly. You know, but but quite premium

in a lot of ways and premium in tech and premium quality, but there's just not that many people after that, you know, set of prerequisites in a car. I want to give you, I'll give

you a name, Edward Veloster. Veloster.

As well can continue to sell well and you know so, so like if. It's ugly as sin, not as good of

quality as as CZ. I would, I would think, and I

don't understand why anyone buys them.

hybrid to win was kind of the as well which which which is which is now basically going crazy. So I'm yay, Scotty, Yurio, Rob,

yeah. Just because of affordability.

can totally get that. Can have one now Rob for like 8

that's that's that's why you know it it kind of hurt because like there was there was a lot of cars that did what that car did but arguably better with more performance ETC.

For less money. So, but if you wanted to see as

you have to, you have to want to see Z, it's one of those cars that you have to want. What year was that?

Was it not 2011? Hmm. 2012 was a was a was a good

year though this is this is one of the this is the last double winner that we've had in a very long time.

The Toyota, the Toyota virus. So this the Toyota 86 and the

Subaru joint winners good come back to form for both these companies because Toyota was in a bit of a slab of doing nothing for quite a long time and basically partnered with what it was Subaru to create a affordable sports car and that was fun. Rible Dr you know with a with a

boxer engine to to keep the handling good to keep the keep the weight low. So it came out and there I

remember the hype for this car. I don't know if you guys

remember the for this but the hype was huge and everyone was talking like the other they wanted to drive was was was an 86 or BZ and the wait list was the waiting times were massive.

I remember I was at a I was at a a car meet one night and one guy rocked up in one like it was like one of the first ones in the country and the amount of people that went up to the car playing with it, looking around at it because it was it wasn't it was an affordable sports car and something that we haven't had in a very long time. And I mean that that was that

was just a basic 86 GT, wasn't even GT S it was just you know it was a complete base because you couldn't get GPS cause I was just super hard to get the time. And yeah he's like it's best

America is driven. He was talking it up and but all

the reviews are saying that as well like saying it was just a fun good cheap sports car that you know brings back, brings back to basics you know motoring essentially it's it's you and car because they undercut MX5 and price they.

Yeah and you still had a somewhat usable back here which is not really usable at all to be fair.

So they were in a lot of ways a really important car for both Subaru and Toyota. Toyota is it was their first

car. It was their comeback car for

not producing anything boring. And for Subaru it was their

first time doing something real drive in a very long time like that that had been that had been doing, you know everything else was was just symmetrical or drive.

So it was kind of a big gamble for both of those companies and they produced a car now that is this is really well received that's used in every form of motorsport imaginable.

There's, you know there's there's an 86 Cup series, there's you know and usually when the cars are put in a cup series, it must mean they companies are doing something right with them like in terms of in terms of how they drive reliability etcetera. So I think a worthy winner for

both those cars and that's a different yay for me.

What about you guys, Rob? What are you thinking on this

one? Yeah, yeah, well, quite like to

be honest there just a little bit few little differences in the in the styling. I just quite like the way it's.

The stance on it was just a little bit nicer, I thought.

I agree and there better finish too because because the.

Say, I think there's a little bit more premium.

And to be fair the the the 86 are sort of like 5 to one or something I think that was part of the agreement they had but the BRZ were were fully loaded whereas the 86 you had to buy GTS but also the BS would that much nicer finish I thought I thought they were nicer car so so yeah I completely agree with you Rob. I think I think that would that

would be better that were the better of the two choices.

I think they were better looking cartoon.

Yeah, I think it was the best thing that's that's happened in quite some time. If you want a sports car, would

you have to choose from an Amex 5?

Nothing wrong with that, Scott. No, there isn't.

But I'm just saying, do you just want some more options?

You want some more competition? Was that around the time when

the Honda stopped there S2000? Stopped at about 2009.

I think it's 2000, yeah. Yeah.

So you didn't have much to choose from and as I said, there's nothing wrong with MX5, but it's great to have more competition and more to choose from.

Yeah, and this was a fantastic option and I think what a lot of people said that made it more fun too is the Prius sized tyres and wheels that were on it. So you could really have quite a

lot of fun on the track and push its limits comfortably, public roads without breaking any real laws and everything like that.

But if you still wanted to tonnes of aftermarket parts everywhere. Hmm, anything goes wrong with

it. You've got parts that you can

get from Australia straight from Japan, it doesn't matter and that just makes it so much better when it comes to today.

Absolutely. I remember in Japan you could

buy them with, you know, black plastic bumpers that hadn't been painted because Japan was expected and steel wheels because they expected to modify it and.

Make It your Own Did that with quite a few of the Evos 2 at the time, but not at the time but further back to they come with just the steelies on there and inside was nothing, no radio, that empty spot. Pretty much radio race car to

just go out and. Yeah, yeah.

Yeah, I'm a guy. I think in summary they worked

they worked hard with the a vision of what they needed to keep it to. It sort of worked hard to keep

very interesting because you would have been working for this company at the time, BMW I3. Oht yeah the I3.

I3. Like the I3, it's yeah, I always

enjoy driving those and I didn't drive them a lot.

But the, and I've said it before with I3 and I8, were the two cars on sale. Both very different machines,

but both with a very similar philosophy in terms of recyclability and sustainability.

And that I admire, because it was pretty ballsy to go out on that tangent and spend the money that they spent developing those two cars. Now an I3 is a bit of an ugly

little thing. It's certainly not a car you

look at and go wow, it's attractive, but it was different And I think it was designed to be catch your attention And some of the things that it showcased are have absolutely filtered into other cars and other BMW's, you know, even to this day, you know, there's no question about that.

I didn't love the look of it, but I got used to the look of it and the way it drove was fantastic.

And as a City car and a little piece of sustainable luxury, it was, it was very good. You know, compared to cars now

didn't have an amazing range. You know it was sort of about

160K or 180K. Like it wasn't it wasn't a

brilliant range. But if you plugged it in every

night like you did with your mobile phone and you only ran around town or had a particular commute, fine.

Everyone that bought one had another car.

You know, It wasn't like it was there, but.

I remember walking into dealership having a look at one look fantastic and I asked asked Ohm, how much are these little cars OHS? Something yeah, they were, they

were money, but everything running off them like they they had a carbon fibre, you know sort of shell and then the dash and the door panels were made out of recycled coke bottles.

The materials were all sourced on the cloth and the seats from there's like no other car company had been as conscious of sustainability as BMW. With that and and the I8 mark

card. Is all.

What's that? Wasn't this the Smart car

pretty? Much maybe the Smart was

somewhat part way there but I still think BMW went to further lengths like the factory where they were made.

Don't quote me on this which one it was.

I forget my was wondering Reagan's burger or something.

In Germany, you know a lot of the power came from methane from the cows and the next door panic like they did.

They really did go back to Ground Zero with that car and and look at every single component and how sustainable they could be with it. So it was a it was a thinking

person's environmental car and a cool concept and that wasn't that affordable. But, but I I'm a yes, because I

think a bit like the CZ and maybe more so you know for for for company to push themselves in a direction like that and sort of showcase what's possible.

Well, I think that's worthy, you know, if not, if not for that particular car, for what it brings to a lot of other cars, you know, I think it's a worthy winner.

We had, we got the, we got the hard ones right, like the with the. Right, you got the got the the

the straight battery. They always ran on straight

battery so they always powered by the battery.

However, you could get a range extender which was a little 600CC petrol motor that it wouldn't, the petrol motor wouldn't power the wheels. It was always the battery, but

it would keep the battery topped to a level.

So if you absolutely couldn't plug in, you can Chuck a tank.

It's tiny tank, you know, took like, I don't know, 10 litres on 15 litres or something like that.

But it would. It would run and keep the

battery at a level that meant you could proceed.

So. That's that's a little bit of a

backup. The Audi rally cars actually won

the Dakar Rally and and that's what they are, the hybrid petrol. These came out.

I always thought it looked like a bulldog cause the grill was up high and it looked like it was, its nose was, you know, pushed back like kind of looked like a little bulldog.

Yeah, yeah, a little, a little snotty Bulldog.

The turning circle in that was amazing because it had big diameter wheels. But for to to save on rolling

resistance they were quite thin. The tyres were quite narrow and

because it's rear drive you know like rear engine rear drive, you know the fronts had this amazing turning ability.

So you turned in an in an I3 were just.

A delight. It's a 911, yeah.

And you set up high and they were very glossy, you know, so I loved. And the interior materials were

often very light, you know, they had light cloth and light finishes and it's sort of just felt like a Scandinavian lounge.

It was fresh, light, great turning, whisper quiet, Obviously being an electric and see all the range extended here a little bit, but you're pretty whisper quiet.

It's so as a City car. I remember saying to people all

the time, I mean put the price aside.

I'd say yes but because I'm ordering you one of this weird tyre, I need you to come pay for it first because I don't think, yeah. Anyway, I'd never sell it again.

and popped it on, but he but he's always like weirdest.

Only for that car that size as well, it was just.

was a bit of a gateway into into into everything else.

It's an interesting car. It reminds me of a concept car.

into production is what it really reminds me of, especially the I8 as well, with both of them side by side.

Well, considering what happens just the year before, was the Volkswagen again popping up? It's like it's like normal

little hatch and then what? And then into this, and I think

it is well deserved because everything that went into it, electric cars went big yet they're just kind of showing would be done. Yes, expensive, but that's

because they're doing something completely new that hasn't been done before. So obviously it's going to be

pricy until more companies do it and the prices come down.

I'd like to say yay, but I'm just going to go nay.

Really liked the idea and concept of it.

It's just that it's not a people off.

The concept of World Car of the Year is card.

It's innovative, yes, but also attainable.

It's, yeah, it's it's an unattainable car.

it you know W126 and they were just I think that was controversial at the time because it was the most expensive thing that had ever won and out of reach of 90% of the population probably more probably 95% of the population.

But for what it represented technology wise and 1st car with standard ABS brakes and self level resuspension and you know there there are a lot of good things in that car.

It's occasionally they sort of got to give a nod to that I suppose and. Affecting.

the time was a standout in it segment.

You know the I3 kind of created a segment if you could argue that suppose MX5, you know original was was a standout in that small sports car segment. You know, so that it's more

about that than being, yeah, comparing them to each other, you sort of can't. 2015 was award was changed so no winner

there. 2016 back on the MX5 the ND generation this time around

very worthy winner basically they came out with this I I personally think this is like I know the peers are going to me because he knows the best looking but I think in the end he's the best looking one it's it's it was lighter than the NC in a in a in an RF with you know the retractable fastback God it's a hot looking car fantastic to drive fantastic to look at you know if you get the 1.5 with the Super review you know rivets
