“Skunk Works” is a nickname for a team that builds new technology fast, often with fewer layers and more freedom. Here it’s tied to Ford’s EV development efforts.
Ford is creating a new group that brings together designing vehicles and making them. The idea is to connect the engineering work more directly to factory production.
Ford Blue is Ford’s internal name for its traditional gas-engine business. The company still tracks its results separately from the electric-vehicle business.
Model E is Ford’s label for its electric-vehicle business inside the company. They still track results separately from the gas-engine side, called Ford Blue.
SpaceX is mentioned because it’s buying a lot of Cybertrucks. That buying shows up in registration data and helps keep Cybertruck sales from looking worse.
They’re talking about Tesla’s Cybertruck and how many are being registered. The key claim is that Musk-linked companies are buying them in large numbers, which keeps the registration numbers from falling.
CTL is a company that makes EV batteries. The segment says it’s growing fast in China, and it’s also dealing with U.S. government scrutiny that could affect its ability to expand in the U.S.
The Pentagon has a list of companies it considers connected to the Chinese military. If a company is on that list, it can make it harder for them to do business or expand in the U.S.
Renault is a car company. Here they’re talking about growing in India—building cars there and using the country to help design and develop future models.
A platform is the shared “base” that multiple cars can be built on. An architecture is the overall design plan for how the car is laid out, so the company can make many models without starting from scratch each time.
The Dacia Duster is a small SUV made by Dacia. It’s meant to be practical for everyday driving and family use. The podcast mentions an updated lineup, with several versions built using shared vehicle designs to keep things efficient.
They’re saying the lineup will include different kinds of “electric-ish” cars—some that use a gas engine plus batteries, and some that are more EV-focused. The point is variety in how the cars are powered.
A plug-in hybrid battery is the battery in a car that you can charge from an outlet. “Large” means it’s bigger, so the car can run on electricity for longer before using gas.
Term
fully recharge in ten minutes
This is talking about how fast you can charge the battery. If a car can recharge in about ten minutes, it’s easier to fit charging into a normal trip.
They’re saying better charging could mean you don’t need the biggest battery all the time. If you can recharge quickly, a smaller battery might still work well.
Hyundai Motor America is Hyundai’s business in the United States. The segment is saying the person they hired had been working in Hyundai’s US sales leadership.
A recall is when a car company has to fix a safety or defect issue. Warranty work is fixing problems that are covered by the company—both can get very costly.
Intrepid Control Systems is a company that helps car makers test and manage vehicle software. They provide tech that supports diagnosing problems and validating vehicles before they’re released.
Fleet testing means testing lots of cars, not just one. It helps find problems that might only show up when many vehicles are driven in the real world.

Speaker 1: This is Uderline Daily, the show dedicated to enthusiasts of the global automotive industry. Big news at Ford doug Field
is leaving the company. He's the Silicon Valley technologist who
led the company's skunk Works, which was all about developing evs that could compete with the Chinese on price and technology.
The first of those vehicles will go into production next year, but the skunk Works will now be run by Alan Clark, who's moving up from director to vice president. Ford is
reorganizing its product development and manufacturing operations into one new organization called Product Creation and Industrialization, and it will absorb the skunk Works. Yet, even with the new business unit,
Ford will continue to report its profits and losses for Model E and Ford Blue as part of the company's income statement. Those are the companies EV and IC Operations, respectively,
which are run by Andrew Frick. With the skunk Works
getting absorbed into the new Product Creation and Industrialization unit, we think doug Field decided it would be a good time to announce his departure. By all accounts, it looks
like an amicable departure. But doug Field saw that his
work at Ford was done and by the way, We're going to take a deep dive into the changes at Ford on today's auto line after hours. These changes have
big ramifications for Ford, its employees, its retailers, and its supply chain. Our colleagues Jerne Levine, a talk show host
with Sirius XM, and Adam Bernard, who ran competitive intelligence at General Motors, will be on the show. So joined
John and Gary when they go live at three pm Eastern Time today. During the Second World War, Detroit's automakers
became known as the arsenal of democracy because they played a critical role in providing the material that won the war.
And now The Wall Street Journal reports that the Pentagon held talks with GMCEO Mary Bara and forged Jim Farley to lend their manufacturing muscle to military production. The Pentagon
wants to ramp up production of weapons and ammunition quickly, and doesn't seem to think that the defense establishment can do it all on its own or develop new technologies quickly enough. Today, the military industrial complex has been narrowed
down to a relatively few number of giant contractors, and the Pentagon wants to expand that industrial footprint elon musk companies outside of Tesla are helping to prop up sales of the cyber truck. According to data from SMP Global Mobility,
SpaceX accounted for nearly thirteen hundred of the roughly seventy one hundred cyber trucks registered in the fourth quarter of last year, or about twenty percent, and must other companies acquired another sixty cyber trucks during the same period. It's
estimated that the purchases exceeded one hundred million dollars, and without those sales, cybertruck registrations would a slump fifty one percent.
While Elon's companies have continued to buy cyber trucks into this year as well, they've done so at a lower rate.

Speaker 1: Despite a slowdown in EV sales in China, battery makers CTL posted big growth in the first quarter. Its revenue
came in at nearly nineteen billion dollars, up over fifty percent from a year ago, and its net profit shot up nearly fifty percent to just over three billion. CTL
controls forty six percent of the evy battery market in China and thirty percent of its energy storage systems and speaking of CTL, it's try to get itself removed from the Pentagon's list of companies with ties to the Chinese military, which could derail its goal of expanding in the US.
Bloomberg reports that a co chairman of the company has visited Washington at least twice since last year to argue it poses no security risk. The co chairman said its
batteries won't be used by the Chinese military and also provided a video in documents to support its case. CTL
says it's also exploring legal options to get itself removed.
While there are no specific sanctions for being included in the list, it discourages US companies from doing business with them, and it's increasingly being used to bar companies from contracts.
Renault has high hopes for the Indian market. It now
has fifteen thousand employees there and is giving them an elevated role within the group, which will include developing platforms, architectures, and technology for future models. Renault has already entered used
four of the seven vehicles it plans to build and sell in India by the end of the decade. Like
the all new Duster, the seven models are based on two platforms and will span compact cars to larger SUVs with IC hybrid in EV power trains, but they won't be limited to India when you factor in vehicles, R and D and components. Renault hopes to generate two billion
euros in annual exports and have India be among its top three global markets by twenty thirty. Nearly three quarters
of China's battery market is controlled by three companies. So
s Folt, which is a spin off of great Wall Motor and is considered a mid level battery maker, is going after what could be an emerging part of the market, large plug in hybrid batteries. S Volt's newest pack is
a whopping eighty kilowat hours over thirty five percent bigger than its previous large p HAVE battery. It's said to
provide a four hundred kilometers or nearly two hundred and fifty miles of EV only driving range and the ability to fully recharge in ten minutes. New battery and charging
tech could make large battery pehs obsolete, but as Folk believes, they could have a place in large and off road SUVs where customers want more flexibility, and these setups offer better range compared to b Eve's. Stillantis has Poachedhundai's head
of sales in the US, Michael Orange. Starting next week,
he'll lead Stalantis's US sales and network performance. Orange replaces
Jeff Commer, who's retiring after forty years with the company.
Orange had been with Hyundai Motor America since two thousand and eight and served as vice president of sales for the past sixteen months, a period that saw Hondai post record sales in the US, and that success is likely why Stillantis decided to snag them. And before we go,
we want to let you know we're going to post a video this weekend that uncovered the massive increase in the cost of recalls and warranty work in the industry.
The numbers are shocking. You think the industry lost a
lot of money writing off its EV investments, wait until you see these numbers. And by the way, auto Line's
Patreon and YouTube members can watch that video right now, which is one of the advantages of being an autoline member.
You get to see information like this before anyone else does.
