00:00
You are listening to the Analog and Grit podcast.
00:07
I'm your host, Victor Troyer.
00:10
We got a special episode today.
00:13
Who do we have on the show?
00:22
Josh from Analog and Grit.
00:29
Rome, welcome back.
00:30
You're on the podcast, back in the day.
00:34
You guys want to just maybe push it towards you, like just bend it down, because it looks
00:39
like it's sticking up.
00:44
What's talking about the mic?
00:45
Get your face closer.
00:46
What's your face closer doing?
00:47
What kind of adjustment are you doing over there?
00:48
What's it look like if you put your mouth on it?
00:51
Lime it a little off.
00:54
I feel like we should go around the room because everybody said their name, but
01:01
This is Roy Prince.
01:03
So he's the most prolific printer, screen printer in San Diego.
01:07
I've been doing it for like, introduce yourself properly.
01:14
I've been printing for like 30 years, print for a lot of the motorsport industry.
01:19
I can include some names if you guys want.
01:21
Yeah, names of people.
01:22
Probably Eibach, Bilstein, HP Tuners, HRE, like quite a few.
01:30
You may have heard of some of those brands.
01:32
Yeah, some of them.
01:33
Little brands, they're tiny.
01:35
But I also print for inductive.
01:39
So he's been printing and also today we're going to talk about BMWs, E36 M3s, E90
01:48
How many M3s have you had, Roy?
01:51
E36 M3s, probably like 20.
01:54
E46s, probably, I don't know, four of them.
02:00
I can't count the salvage title one that never was fixed, but two of those.
02:03
And then finally got the E30 M3 in the build process, thanks to Mike and his skills too
02:10
and everybody's support as well.
02:13
And I feel like one of his most famous M3s was the lightweight that you built,
02:17
the 36 M3 lightweight.
02:21
I loved that car, but at one point I'm just like, I got to sell it and move on and started
02:30
It's like the one that's got the liquid molly livery.
02:33
But yeah, I took that funds from that and then bought another car.
02:36
Anyway, long story short, I took some of that money and eventually got the E30 M3
02:41
and stripped it down and getting it going.
02:44
And on that note, one of the builders for your current build, your E30 M3,
02:50
we got Mike Miggs here, which is arguably one of the best builders for BMWs,
02:55
custom BMWs and swaps in San Diego.
02:57
I don't quite say this.
02:59
You guys went around the table and you're like, what's up on Mike?
03:02
I do stuff, I guess.
03:05
So like introduce yourself, tell the people what they need to know.
03:10
I think it's hard to talk about yourself.
03:12
Well, for me, it's hard for me to talk about myself.
03:15
I don't like talking myself.
03:18
I've been in the industry for 20 plus years, suspension companies.
03:25
I founded a company called Status Group where we were the world leader
03:28
for a minute doing E46 and three parts, carbon, suspension, exhaust, stuff like that.
03:35
My current companies are Grail Brand, Inductive, which is a wireless charging company.
03:40
And then on the side, I build cars.
03:42
I don't want to say I'm a builder, but I do, I'm passionate about building for sure.
03:47
What are some of the most epic builds, in your opinion, that maybe if you're talking
03:55
about it, like with humility, you're like, oh, those cars are cool.
03:58
But what cars have made the internet go wild?
04:00
Like you told me about the S65, it's like E46 build you're doing.
04:05
So currently I'm doing an S65 DCT swap.
04:08
As far as I know, there isn't one in the U.S. right now.
04:11
There's some in Germany.
04:12
There's a couple places in Germany that build really cool versions of that.
04:15
But as far as I know, the only S65 swaps in the U.S. are 6B cars.
04:20
My current, the car that I'm doing that is the Status Group car.
04:24
So a lot of people know what that car is.
04:26
It's a Silver Gray E46 M3.
04:29
And I've had it for 15 plus years and spent in Performance BMW magazine,
04:33
a couple different magazines, some of the other cool builds.
04:37
And I don't know if you guys even saw that car,
04:39
but I built an off-road looking BMW.
04:42
So I used a lot of CSL parts and we built custom bash bars and stuff
04:47
that were removable, wrapped the whole thing, lifted it four inches.
04:51
And as much as I wanted to be an all-wheel drive car,
04:54
my friend didn't want it to be built like that.
04:56
But that car was featured in Performance BMW and stuff.
05:01
It's so hard to remember all the builds.
05:03
You know, I built a bunch of wagons,
05:05
I've been a part of a bunch of wagon M3 conversions, sedan conversions.
05:09
I had a personal F80 M3 that was individual Silver Gray,
05:14
which was a cool car.
05:16
They're like, why don't you spend all this money to get a cool color
05:18
and you got the same color as your other car?
05:20
But I'm one of those weird car guys where I don't go through cars.
05:24
Like you guys have had so many cars compared to me
05:26
and I've had like the same car for 15 years and I just kind of changed it up.
05:30
That's a testament.
05:31
I just, I get attached to them.
05:33
So it just, my problem would be if I had money,
05:36
I'd have like too many of them, you know,
05:38
and I'd need a place like this just to keep my own cars.
05:41
I do love that though, because the way you build cars
05:44
and the way you do projects, you're doing stuff that you don't see.
05:48
Like the rinse and repeat game, it really grinds my gears.
05:52
And if we're doing stuff that hasn't been done before
05:55
or just kind of one-off stuff,
05:57
like tell these guys about the truck that you pulled up in today.
06:01
Like how unique that is.
06:03
So my daily is a, it's 2015 F-150 XL.
06:07
So just a regular truck started out,
06:09
but it's all full Raptor, OEM Raptor body,
06:11
lowered four inches in the front, six inches in the back.
06:15
It's got 20-inch off-road tires and wheels.
06:18
And then it's a 3.7-liter GT500 supercharged V6 in it.
06:23
But it's a little flexible.
06:25
It's like five to 600 horsepower.
06:26
It's faster than a new Raptor.
06:28
So it looks exactly like a slammed Raptor.
06:30
From first glance, you're like,
06:32
oh my God, this guy lowered his Raptor.
06:34
You're like, hey, relax, buddy. It's not a Raptor.
06:36
It makes people mad and breaks the brains and it's the best.
06:39
It's so fun just watching people as they're like,
06:42
what is that thing?
06:44
You know, as they're taking a picture, a video of it.
06:46
Mike makes out here breaking brains.
06:48
I got my first thumbs down the other day.
06:51
I don't know where I was.
06:53
I was in Poway and I was taking a corner.
06:55
I was going to pick up my son from football
06:57
and there's like some young kid in a Bronco
06:59
and he's just ready and he had his phone
07:01
and ready to like recording me as I drove around.
07:03
Just giving me the big thumbs down,
07:05
waving thumbs down and I was like, what?
07:08
It's because you're not lifted.
07:10
It had hurt. I've never seen a thumbs down.
07:12
I've never had a thumbs down.
07:14
Coming from a fellow Ford brother, right?
07:17
If you would think the Bronco guy would be all about it.
07:20
It's like while recording, too.
07:22
I was just doing it for a tit-talk.
07:24
Did you hear your thumb in the shot?
07:26
Yeah, my thumb's in the shot.
07:28
Did you see it? Look at my thumb.
07:30
I'm giving them a thumbs down.
07:32
Well, Rome, why don't you go ahead and introduce yourself, too?
07:36
I've been on this podcast before.
07:38
I'll do the reintroduction.
07:41
I am active duty Marine Corps.
07:44
I actually retire this year.
07:46
My ceremony will be November 12th.
07:48
It could be held here at Analog and Grid.
07:50
It's been a long time coming.
07:52
I appreciate it, guys.
07:54
I've also had a whole bunch of BMWs.
07:56
I grew up with BMWs.
07:58
My father is a huge five-series guy.
08:01
He had E28, E39s, all the way up to the current model five-series.
08:06
So I'm die-hard BMW, but it's kind of funny
08:10
because I kind of shipped it to the Mercedes platform.
08:14
Tell them why. Tell them why.
08:16
Is this another thumbs down?
08:18
Don't just kidding.
08:20
I'm recording it, too.
08:22
Getting a little right here.
08:25
So I've had two E90M3s at one point.
08:31
E36M3 built by LTMW that I sold.
08:36
And yeah, then I had a BMW 2002 Turbo
08:42
that was rebuilt by Monafide that I just sold.
08:46
And I stepped away from the BMW community.
08:49
I wanted to try something different.
08:51
I had other vehicles that I was on my bucket list.
08:53
Some personal things came up with some of the builds I had.
08:57
And so instead of, I'm one of those people,
08:59
if something happens and I'm not okay with that,
09:01
I'll just completely step away from it.
09:04
There's no need. I just like a fresh start.
09:06
So there was a Cosworth 190E that popped up
09:11
for a really good price.
09:12
Had a really good stuff done to it.
09:14
And so I took that money from the 2002 Turbo
09:17
that I was pretty much synonymous for
09:20
and bought the Cosworth.
09:22
First of all, I haven't had a car that had AC in almost seven years.
09:26
So just that, you're like, this car's amazing.
09:28
I was sold. I was sold.
09:30
Watching this guy, I got to chime in.
09:32
So watching this guy drive his Turbo 2002,
09:35
wait, he's got a big ass black poodle.
09:38
So he's on the freeway.
09:43
He's got this big ass black poodle
09:45
like panting in his face.
09:47
I'm like, hey, what's up, Roman?
09:49
He's just like miserable.
09:50
Sweatin' bullets over there.
09:51
So to see this guy now in his Cosworth,
09:54
he got a big smile.
09:56
Like, Nipple's hardship because it's so cold.
09:58
I got to look over his dog.
09:59
All six of his Nipples are hard.
10:01
They're just like ice cubes in their car.
10:05
I'm like, you deserve it, bro.
10:06
I thought it was car talk, not Nipple talk.
10:09
Yeah, it was a long time coming.
10:11
So I've been so excited.
10:12
I've been blasting the AC.
10:13
I've been over 2,000 miles on this car
10:15
and I'm out of two and a half, three weeks.
10:17
I've been up to San Francisco, the Redwoods,
10:20
the Sequoias, Big Bear.
10:23
I drove that car since I bought it everywhere I could.
10:26
And so right now we're in the process
10:28
of representing the DTM love, right?
10:30
Like it's a forgotten era.
10:32
And that's why I really love the bill
10:34
that Roy and Mike have produced.
10:37
I tell Roy all the time, you know,
10:39
how much I love how he was able to curate this bill
10:42
with a lot of great people.
10:44
And I just got done telling him that.
10:47
Also, I also have a brand called Garage Icons.
10:50
So the 190E and the 2002 that we were going to build
10:55
was all supposed to be the Garage Icons build.
10:57
And it's funny because Mike is such a great engine swap guy.
11:01
I was going to do, and I'll take the rabbit out the hat now,
11:05
I was going to do a V12 swap on a BMW 2 or 1600.
11:10
There's going to be a rear engine car, center seat car.
11:13
Yeah, it's supposed to be the N73 motor out of the 760 Li.
11:18
So I bought a whole car just for this swap.
11:21
And it sat in my friend's driveway
11:23
for whenever I bought this like six months ago.
11:25
And he never started it.
11:27
And eventually I went over to swap the battery out
11:30
He's like, can I buy it?
11:31
I'm like, sure it's all yours.
11:32
So I bought this car for do this crazy swap.
11:35
Obviously I was a little over my head
11:36
because I knew it was going to be like $90,000
11:38
to complete this car.
11:39
But I was so hopeful and I still want to do it.
11:42
But now that we got this guy over here,
11:44
I might have to hustle and bustle him into doing something crazy
11:47
and continue to break the internet and get thumbs down.
11:50
So yeah, that's a little bit about me.
11:54
Yeah, as long as I have AC.
11:55
I feel like at this point, I'm almost 40 now.
11:58
At this point, if a car is too stiff,
12:01
if it doesn't have AC or radio or heat, I'm out.
12:04
I don't want to deal with the car.
12:06
That's the first question.
12:07
Josh has been sending me a car at the car, at the car.
12:11
And first thing I always text Josh, does it have AC,
12:14
He's like, no, look, I'm out.
12:15
Like in conversation.
12:16
That's not the first thing.
12:17
The first thing he texts me is, how much is it?
12:19
Because I want to offer half price.
12:22
Because it's too much.
12:23
I haven't told you yet.
12:26
So that's my background.
12:29
So Josh, tell me about who you are.
12:32
I know you're talking about how we short-changed ourselves.
12:34
You completely short-changed yourself here
12:36
and what you represent to the automotive community here
12:38
in Southern California.
12:39
I'm going to do an introduction like you guys.
12:46
So for those of you who don't know, we run analog and grit here in San Diego
12:51
at the southern tip of South Park.
12:53
It's actually a neighborhood called Grant Hill right on the border
12:56
of Logan Heights and Grant Hill.
12:58
And we're just outside of downtown.
13:00
And we have a 17,000 square foot facility
13:03
where it's not just a car storage facility.
13:06
It's what we like to call like a camaraderie
13:08
and rich brotherhood, sisterhood.
13:10
And we've got four lifts where we can work on your car.
13:13
You can work on your car yourself
13:15
or we can teach you how to work on your car.
13:17
We've got an in-house detailer.
13:19
He goes by the name of Sudmuffin.
13:22
So he can do paint corrections, ceramic coats.
13:25
And then we've also partnered with Elite Finish
13:28
because we don't do PPF, but they do.
13:30
So if you join our club and go over to Elite,
13:33
then they'll PPF your car.
13:37
We do every Wednesday.
13:39
We do grill and chill.
13:41
So as funny as it may sound,
13:43
it's kind of like a Fast and the Furious for family.
13:46
And then we just grill up meat
13:48
and we eat tacos and crack beers
13:50
and everybody just pulls up
13:52
and whatever build they're working on.
13:54
We do that every Wednesday.
13:56
Every last Sunday of the month,
13:58
we do what's called Sunday Grit Cars and Coffee.
14:00
And we'll serve all the coffee,
14:02
all the pastries from Glenny's Bakery
14:04
and we actually brew all the coffee
14:07
and espresso in-house.
14:09
So every last Sunday of the month,
14:11
we'll do that from 8 a.m. to noon.
14:13
It's just kind of like a place
14:16
where you can just come and do car stuff,
14:19
It doesn't really matter what you drive.
14:21
It's just something that we're trying to build together
14:23
to kind of bring the community together.
14:25
So that's what we do and that's what we're a part of.
14:27
If any of that sounds fun,
14:29
yeah, come down and see us.
14:31
And now we're about to talk about BMWs.
14:34
What makes you a BMW guy?
14:37
So what BMWs have I owned in my life?
14:39
I've owned a bunch of M3s.
14:41
I'm obviously an analog vintage guy,
14:44
so the E9X platform.
14:46
I always say it's kind of a funny story,
14:48
but that was my midlife crisis car.
14:51
So when I, you know, I felt like I was getting too old
14:53
and then I needed something spicy.
14:55
I was like, you know what?
14:57
I'm pulling the trigger.
14:58
I'm getting a freaking V8 M3.
14:59
I'm getting a new one.
15:00
Yeah, and then I think I had that car for about a year
15:02
and I'm like, oh, this car is too new.
15:04
I'm gonna get something older, like less common.
15:07
But yeah, that's kind of what got me into it.
15:10
And I love manual cars.
15:12
I was a big E30 guy, still am.
15:14
I've probably had 90 30s.
15:17
But Roy here, who's part of the podcast,
15:20
he just recently sold me what was that last week.
15:23
Super clean, a storel blue,
15:25
dove gray interior E36 M3.
15:27
So when you buy a car from Roy,
15:29
I consider Roy Mr. E36 M3.
15:33
He says, oh, you want to buy this car?
15:36
First of all, he gave me like a supreme deal.
15:38
Second off, he's like, oh yeah, I think I got a roll cage here.
15:41
You need a roll cage for that?
15:43
Oh, hey, I got a carbon fiber door panels.
15:47
Do you like carbon fiber?
15:48
I'm like, yeah, I do.
15:50
He was like, oh yeah, it's got this coil overs.
15:53
He's got some sick wheels, you know, like, oh,
15:56
and the AC is cold.
15:58
It's got heat and AC in the radio.
16:00
Ron Perksup, he's like, AC?
16:02
He's like, tell me you'll pay him half price.
16:05
If you're going to pay him, I'll pay him half.
16:08
So I've never owned a E30 M3,
16:10
which is arguably my favorite M3.
16:12
But my second favorite is the E36 M3.
16:16
So I'm pretty stoked to have it.
16:19
Shout out to Scott.
16:21
He brought me a, what is that, a light weight wing?
16:26
He brought that over, just, you know, donated to the cause.
16:29
So pretty excited about that, getting all cleaned up
16:31
and making it look nice.
16:32
So, yeah, very excited about that.
16:36
I wish I had all those same parts that I had for E36 for E30.
16:41
E3 that's kicking around.
16:43
So safe to say we have some subject matter experts
16:46
regarding BMW on this podcast today, right?
16:49
Super exciting platform.
16:51
I think we're all, it's kind of cool because we all have
16:53
our ones we really, we really like, you know, like E46.
16:57
I die hard E46, you know,
16:59
but that's the only thing I know
17:00
because I've never had anything else.
17:03
Let's go around the table.
17:04
Tell us which M3, you know, you have your closest affinity
17:08
towards and then we'll talk values.
17:10
I want you guys to guess the values per classic.com today
17:13
with the values of let's just stick
17:15
between E30, E46 and E36.
17:19
So we'll start with you.
17:20
Go ahead and tell us which M3 is yours.
17:25
So if you go by looks, I love the E30 M3.
17:30
But the way they look, that's my favorite for sure.
17:32
Just that era, you know, I'm an 80s baby.
17:35
So a 90s car is my favorite.
17:38
But to me, value for what you get
17:41
and how the car drives,
17:42
all the things included in the car is an E46 M3.
17:53
Just the rawness of the car.
17:56
You know, it's so analog, if you will.
18:02
The size, the feeling of it.
18:05
You know, I've had a newer M3,
18:07
an F80 M3 for seven years.
18:09
And that car was great in what it did.
18:11
It was comfortable.
18:14
But it just didn't have that charm of the E46.
18:17
Just the rawness, just the shape of the cockpit,
18:21
everything inside of it.
18:22
You know, just the way it felt was just natural to me.
18:26
And all the other cars after that or before that
18:28
just felt different or weird to me.
18:32
Have you ever wondered,
18:33
because when you were describing that, Mike,
18:35
have you ever wondered if maybe
18:37
our affinity for a car later in life
18:41
kind of is tied to original memories
18:44
that we experience in the car?
18:46
Probably some of your favorite memories were in an E46 M3.
18:49
Like with buds, like cars, like building experiences.
18:54
I have a lot of those in an E30.
18:56
And when I look at my E30,
18:58
I think, oh man, this is a kid's car.
19:00
It's like a college kid's car or something.
19:02
I got to get rid of it.
19:03
And then I drive it.
19:04
And I experience memories flood back in.
19:06
And I'm like, oh, this is great.
19:08
Why I originally loved the car,
19:09
like the shifting and the weight transfer.
19:11
Do you think there's anything tied to that?
19:14
But I think that could go the other way too.
19:16
I remember this car being so cool and so good.
19:19
And then you get in one and you're like, oh, no, never mind.
19:25
Like, why did I like this thing?
19:26
But probably because you had so much fun in it
19:28
when you were younger.
19:30
I mean, I had a CRX.
19:31
My first car was a Honda CRX.
19:35
And I fit four people in there.
19:46
We're changing the podcast from BMW
19:50
It's going to Honda now.
19:51
But it was like, that was my first car.
19:53
And I had a bunch of memories.
19:54
I mean, fitting four people in that thing,
19:56
mobbing around, just being a hooligan.
19:58
And do I want a stock 89HF CRX right now?
20:05
I feel the same way.
20:06
I mean, give me a nice SI, baby.
20:08
How do we both at the same time simultaneously
20:11
love the CRX and also never want to own one again?
20:17
Well, it's nostalgia, right?
20:18
I mean, you pretty much hit on it, right?
20:20
The nostalgia effect is what made you want that E46, right?
20:23
Because it reminds you of your childhood
20:25
or reminds you of when you were maybe in high school
20:27
when those were super sought after
20:29
and you couldn't afford one.
20:30
But real quick, what's your favorite color, E46?
20:33
Favorite color, E46.
20:35
It's the color half silver gray.
20:39
I'm a huge gray fan.
20:41
So I had a Volkswagen for a long time
20:43
and I built that car for five plus years,
20:46
multiple magazines, all kinds of cool stuff.
20:50
I even had an Audi TT gas door
20:52
on the inside of the hatch on it.
20:54
So as far as I know, no one ever did that.
20:56
I always tried to do,
20:57
not because I was trying to do something cool,
20:59
it was just like, oh, that'd be a cool idea.
21:02
I've never cared if someone's going to like what I do.
21:05
And I think for anybody building cars,
21:07
to me, that's the mindset to have,
21:09
never try to please people
21:10
because if you try to build a car to please people
21:13
and they don't like it,
21:15
you're going to be upset.
21:16
And it's like, well, why did you build it then?
21:20
It's so funny you mentioned that
21:21
because Josh and I just had this conversation
21:23
and I would say almost a week ago
21:25
about sometimes you have to
21:27
even have a great idea,
21:28
take it and run with it.
21:30
And we get caught up.
21:31
I'm guilty of it at a certain point.
21:33
We get caught up when we turn around
21:35
and look behind us and be like,
21:37
oh man, what is everybody else doing?
21:39
Does everybody approve of this crazy idea?
21:41
And then you slow down
21:42
and someone else passes you
21:43
and takes your idea.
21:44
I like how you mentioned that
21:46
because that's very synonymous
21:48
in the car community.
21:49
Yes, we like what we like to build
21:55
we are all guilty of doing it
21:57
for just a little bit of attention
21:59
or someone going, man, that's really dope.
22:01
We like to hear the yada boys
22:04
Whether we like to say it admitted or not,
22:07
I like to keep things straight up.
22:09
We do like someone going, man, that's a great job.
22:11
And the little details that you mentioned
22:13
with the Volkswagen community
22:15
and Audi community, me growing up in Europe,
22:17
the little details that Volkswagen people talk about,
22:19
that's what the whole community is based on.
22:21
OEM plus, that is the key.
22:25
Oh, this bumper is different.
22:26
It's wider by an inch
22:28
and now it's shorter.
22:31
You're like, all right, cool, man.
22:32
I already spent a bunch of money doing that.
22:34
But I love how you mentioned that.
22:36
Like just take your great ideas
22:37
and just run with them.
22:39
Especially with BMW,
22:40
like they have so much of a huge platform
22:43
and everyone can make something out of nothing.
22:46
Like you could have an E30 M3 or E36 or E46,
22:49
but you could do something so simple
22:51
that that would change the look of that car
22:54
that everybody was like,
22:55
I was thinking about that.
22:56
Or I never thought about that.
22:58
I never thought about that.
22:59
Like, oh, I think that's the Volkswagen.
23:01
My Volkswagen background is what kind of brought me
23:04
how I approach all my builds.
23:06
That car was, it was almost like
23:09
trying to outdo the next person,
23:11
but you're not trying to do it outlandishly
23:13
or making it weird.
23:16
You're trying to think outside the box
23:18
but make it look like it's supposed to be there.
23:21
We did Mark IV dash swaps
23:23
and a Mark III way back then
23:27
And it was, we were seeing this stuff from Europe.
23:30
Europeans were always doing super cool stuff,
23:32
especially the Belgian people were always doing crazy stuff.
23:35
And you'd be like, well, I don't want to get that crazy,
23:37
but you take inspiration from it.
23:39
And I think that's how I approached
23:41
all my stuff and especially my E46,
23:43
shaving stuff off that are,
23:45
it's very special to that car,
23:47
but it's like, well, it doesn't look clean with it though.
23:50
I don't want to get rid of it.
23:52
You know what would just popped in my mind?
23:54
Volkswagen people are more creative
23:56
because that platform has been around longer.
23:59
And so in order to stand out,
24:01
you had to do something different.
24:03
Everything's been done before.
24:05
And so if everything's been done before
24:07
and you still want to customize your car,
24:09
then you better dig deep into your hat
24:12
and pull out some kind of new trick.
24:14
And so if you got inspiration from the Volkswagen community,
24:16
that was it, originality.
24:19
Yeah, you were always trying to do,
24:20
like I said, trying to outdo someone,
24:22
but it would be like your best friend
24:25
And so growing up in the Northeast,
24:27
I grew up in New Hampshire
24:28
and our car season was tiny.
24:30
You know, we had three months of maybe good-ish weather.
24:33
Other than that, I mean, you're not driving your car.
24:35
So I was lucky enough, I had a friend,
24:38
and he would let me put my car in his garage all winter.
24:41
you got winter to do whatever you want.
24:43
So it's like, you know,
24:44
every night, every weekend,
24:45
you're over there messing with something,
24:46
changing something,
24:47
or it's at the body shop for months
24:50
You know, where here I feel like
24:52
it's a different luxury with the weather,
24:56
you miss your car if it's gone for a while,
24:57
because you're like, dude,
24:58
I could be driving this thing, you know?
24:59
So I don't think people do the crazy stuff
25:02
because I mean, you're not going to drive
25:04
your car in the winter.
25:05
So it's like, cool.
25:06
So almost every spring,
25:08
it was like really cool going to like New Jersey
25:10
and you'd see the spring openers and stuff,
25:12
and everybody would roll out some crazy stuff.
25:14
It's like, they had all winter to build some stuff.
25:16
You've been working on that all winter,
25:17
you crazy son of a bitch,
25:18
you didn't tell me what you were doing.
25:20
Oh yeah, and then no one would know what you were doing.
25:22
All of a sudden you're just like, bam, what's up?
25:24
You showed up with a color change.
25:26
You showed up just beaming with pride.
25:28
You're like, why is that guy so shiny?
25:29
You're like, he looks very proud.
25:30
Yeah, he's very happy.
25:32
But back to, so my first Volkswagen was,
25:35
it was a red car, then I painted it gray,
25:37
then I painted it red,
25:39
and then its final color was gray.
25:41
And so I've always gravitated towards gray cars.
25:45
That was a really long answer to your question.
25:49
He was summing up gray.
25:51
He loves gray, folks.
25:55
I thought you were going to say like Phoenix Yellow.
25:57
No, I hate that color.
26:01
To your point, why do something to please others?
26:05
Do what you love, right?
26:07
I feel like you would get,
26:08
so I don't mind bright colors.
26:10
Like I always wanted an Agarra Blue
26:12
Audi S4 with a blue interior.
26:14
Like that sounds awesome,
26:16
but I would be over it in a week.
26:18
You know, I mean, or whatever,
26:19
I'd just be like, ah, it's cool,
26:20
but it's so bright, you know,
26:21
where it's like, you can't get sick of gray.
26:22
That's a very mature answer.
26:23
You know, gray is just always look good.
26:25
Gray, silver wheels, gray,
26:27
like there's classic things, you know.
26:30
I was kind of gravitated towards that.
26:31
What about you, Roy?
26:32
What's your favorite M3?
26:33
I like the cleanest canvas,
26:35
white, alpine white.
26:36
Alpine white, yeah.
26:39
So did the E10 and alpine white,
26:42
my E36, the one that I sold,
26:49
Just like a clean slate.
26:50
But what would be your favorite M3?
26:54
This is going to be my first,
26:56
well, now it's the E30 with the S54,
27:00
so it's like the best condo.
27:02
Yeah, so we've got, you know,
27:04
Mike Mig's favorite.
27:06
Actually that motor came out of his car
27:08
and the transmission.
27:10
So yeah, basically having the best of both
27:13
and then still sliding in the E36 range too.
27:18
He's got the body, the best looking body
27:20
is the E30 M3, like we all agree,
27:22
we can all agree on that.
27:24
And then he's got like arguably
27:25
one of the best motors, you know.
27:26
So an S54 engine in an E30.
27:32
It sounds incredible.
27:33
I'm feeling special right now.
27:36
Any, are you going to do a livery on it?
27:38
Like you have on your 2002?
27:41
Usually I'm always about representing everybody else's
27:45
brands that I work with.
27:47
Liquamoli was the E10,
27:49
but at this time I'm going to do my company,
27:52
which is super little screen printing.
27:54
So it'll be a Warsteiner inspired DTM livery.
28:05
What about you, Ron?
28:06
What's your favorite M3?
28:08
I just told the story a little bit earlier.
28:10
I had an opportunity to buy an E30 M3 EVO-1
28:14
back in Cherryport, North Carolina.
28:16
An older gentleman was selling it on Craigslist.
28:18
And as we've all been joking about,
28:21
I'm like, I will haggle everything.
28:24
And he posted for 24 grand.
28:26
And at the time in 2014,
28:28
I mean that was a lot for any old thing.
28:30
Like that was back when 96 cores were like 9 grand.
28:33
You can like buy a Targa, you know,
28:36
Porsche for like five grand.
28:38
You can like, you know, people are tossing.
28:40
You can buy a no car.
28:41
I bought my Datsun for a six grand.
28:43
And it was all like mint and all original.
28:45
And so this guy, it was like,
28:48
yo, I'm going to go look at the car.
28:51
I brought the girl I was dating with me at the time.
28:54
And he told me the price because I was trying to have him.
28:58
He was like, I'm not budget.
28:59
And I'll take this bullcrap.
29:02
I was like, how dare you be upset?
29:04
I offered him like 18.
29:06
I got offered him 18 for the car.
29:08
He was so offended.
29:09
And I was offended because he didn't set my offer.
29:12
We got into a fist fight.
29:14
We rolled around on the ground.
29:15
You know, I'm trying to throw out everything like,
29:17
oh man, I'm a veteran.
29:21
And he wasn't budget.
29:23
And I regret not paying for a price of that car.
29:26
That would have been one of the best opportunities.
29:28
I mean, I also, it's taken away me to another,
29:32
I ended up buying a Mark 4 Super like a week later.
29:34
The six B, the whole one, the one everyone wanted.
29:39
What was the real street?
29:40
Real street was really big.
29:41
And there was like a thousand horsepower.
29:43
So I was super excited about that because I got a halo car
29:46
back when they were affordable.
29:48
But the E 30 and three has always been like,
29:53
there's always like, like Josh Mitch before,
29:55
like as a child, me growing up in Europe,
29:57
DTM was always on, always on TV, like sky network,
30:02
AFN, which is the armed force networks.
30:04
Sky network was like a British channel and BBC and all that stuff.
30:07
It was very prominent in Europe.
30:08
And every time you turn on the TV,
30:11
it was this back on like the bubble TVs for the young people
30:14
that don't know when you like, you rub your hand over it
30:16
and it's like static everywhere.
30:18
I had the 13th TV and turn it on and we DTM or MotoGP on.
30:22
And I would watch this stuff.
30:23
But like, and I would think the body kits were so outrageous,
30:27
But it was like the ugly girl with a hot body, you know,
30:29
and like, I'll just be like, man, that thing is like,
30:31
I was like, man, that thing is like ugly, but beautiful.
30:35
There's something about it.
30:36
There's something about it.
30:37
The height of the cars in the DTM era,
30:38
like how you're like, how did the rear even work on the car?
30:41
But it was just all rim.
30:44
And so the E 30 and three just stood out to me
30:48
from the very beginning.
30:49
So like, not only do I gawk at my cause,
30:52
we're talking about BMWs.
30:53
I literally come in here and gawk at Roy's E 30.
30:57
That S 54 is a perfect combination.
30:59
It sounds so good with that induction.
31:01
Yeah, straight piped, but man.
31:03
There was no exhaust on it right now.
31:05
But we didn't get to that point yet.
31:09
And it's a perfect combo with the cage.
31:11
It's all white on white.
31:12
You can't get more DTM than that.
31:14
So I'm ready for Roy's livery to get on
31:17
because I'm doing a livery on my car also
31:19
and I want to do like the battle of the DTM cars.
31:22
I've already kind of started it by doing a voting form
31:27
I was like, hey, vote for your favorite car.
31:30
Which one would you pick for a track battle?
31:33
You know, the E 30 and three or the 190 E cars were
31:36
and Roy's car beat my car out by one vote.
31:43
You know, I'm over here.
31:45
You like the 30 and 30.
31:47
I think I voted for the E 30 and 30.
31:50
I can't be selfish.
31:53
Whoever did that, damn.
31:55
I was like, dude, it was you.
31:57
It was just after like the DTM love
32:00
and like what they did with that,
32:02
like they made an E 30 and then they were like,
32:05
all right, let's add this weird trunk
32:07
and add these extra parts on there
32:09
to make it look way different.
32:10
Just add these box flares.
32:12
And you're like, what?
32:15
The whole history of that car, I mean,
32:17
the only reason they made the street version
32:19
was to have a race car.
32:22
It was a homologation.
32:25
And the only reason why they made the E 30 and three
32:27
is because the 190 E Cosworth.
32:30
They're trying to compete with each other.
32:33
They made it really boxy
32:34
and then they went crazy arrow, you know,
32:36
and like one fun fact, which I will say,
32:39
this is why I love the Cosworth
32:41
against the E 30 and three.
32:43
So all your famous Formula One
32:46
drivers back in the day.
32:47
So Nikki Lauda, James Hunt,
32:50
Aaron Tinsina all raised the 190 Cosworth
32:53
on a race called the Race of Champions.
32:56
And they all race a factory spec Cosworth.
33:01
They're just only difference was just two colors.
33:05
and then that like champagne gold color.
33:07
And they all race that car.
33:09
And it was literally like drivers,
33:11
like how well like the drivers were.
33:14
So everyone had the same car,
33:15
same playing field.
33:16
It's just how good are you as a driver?
33:18
And can you guys guess which driver won that?
33:21
I'm going to say Nikki Lauda.
33:27
Harrison Senna won that race.
33:28
And he was just gotten to.
33:30
He just got into Formula One.
33:33
And he was a no one knew who he was.
33:35
They were like, Hey,
33:36
we need another person because all the other,
33:38
there was like 14 drivers in there
33:41
And like a couple couldn't make it.
33:43
Nikki Lauda showed up last minute
33:45
because he had other obligations.
33:46
He didn't come in third.
33:47
And he took it very serious too.
33:49
So Aaron and Senna took it really serious.
33:51
Other drivers were like driving off the track.
33:54
They're like, who cares?
33:55
But Aaron and Senna came in
33:56
and took it to heart.
33:58
If you're a racer, you're a racer.
34:01
But he was an unknown racer at the time.
34:03
And it's so like that really sparked
34:04
like the true interest of the DTM thing.
34:06
And I feel like a lot of DTM racing
34:08
is like a forgotten thing now.
34:10
So certain companies are bringing it back.
34:13
But I love that era of E30 M3.
34:16
The races were wild.
34:20
And it's not even, they were going fast.
34:22
You know, it was very technical racing.
34:24
But it was like, they were bashing into each other.
34:28
And it was super, super fun to watch.
34:30
And that was also when they didn't have that many rules.
34:32
Like Audi showed up in like a VA car.
34:34
Like Porsche, I mean that Porsche Ford came in
34:39
BMW had a Volvo showed up.
34:45
Yeah, Lancia, Alfa.
34:47
And then, you know, BMW and Mercedes were like,
34:50
nah, we just care about handling and power.
34:52
And Mercedes was like, oh, we're going to beef up this Cosworth.
34:56
And BMW was like, well, we can do it better with the S14.
34:59
And all pure handing alone to BMW was kicking ass.
35:03
And Mercedes getting their butt whooped.
35:05
And then, you know, every other company like Audi dropped out.
35:09
And they went to a rally.
35:11
And it was like the battle between Mercedes and BMW.
35:15
I'm just like, we're going to go in a rally.
35:17
And then we'll do really well, which they killed it.
35:21
And they got walked.
35:24
All the time was king at the time.
35:26
So keep the long story short.
35:27
That's what it was.
35:29
So what was the color?
35:33
What was the color?
35:34
That was even worse than Mike's.
35:36
What I meant to say was gray.
35:40
At least it came back to the color.
35:42
He's like, behold, picture all the F1 drivers racing together.
35:46
I wanted by the closer eyes.
35:48
His locks, his hair.
35:51
He had a key chain.
35:55
You have me on DTM because you segue to that.
35:57
So obviously that's like a racing, what is it?
35:59
Like a German racing or European car, like racing group, right?
36:03
And so who mainly dominated back then?
36:09
So at one point it was all E30.
36:11
And then E30, BMW pulled out, Audi pulled out.
36:15
And there was Mercedes racing themselves in Opel.
36:18
And then eventually it became all Mercedes racing against themselves.
36:23
And then certain teams came back in.
36:26
Because Formula One was really big.
36:28
A group B rally was really big.
36:31
So the main two companies that were battling were BMW and Mercedes at that time.
36:37
Well, you mentioned something earlier that I really like.
36:40
Because you said, you know, I'm now a Mercedes guy because I have a 190 car's worth.
36:45
But, you know, I had the 2002.
36:47
But there's no, there's no like beef between BMW and Mercedes Benz, right?
36:51
Like you appreciate them for what they are, right?
36:54
Because usually like with Ford and Chevy, like you have your Ford guys,
36:57
you have your Chevy guys and obviously Dodge people, whatever.
37:01
Sorry, Dodge people.
37:04
They're reserved to like Santy, you know.
37:07
No, no, I'm kidding.
37:10
I just lost a hundred subscribers.
37:13
I saw the number draw.
37:15
Honey, hear what he said about this, Dodge people.
37:20
But honestly though, like BMW and Mercedes, right?
37:23
Like there's no, you have no beef between them.
37:25
Obviously you've owned them all, right?
37:27
But my next question is, do you have, if you had to choose one, which one, you know,
37:32
you don't have to say BMW because this is a BMW episode, but just curious.
37:36
That's a good question, man.
37:38
I go back and forth on that.
37:40
Honestly, because of like the lineage where I come from, my dad always having BMWs.
37:45
It's always going to be BMWs at heart.
37:47
I was never a Mercedes guy.
37:48
I end up owning two now, whoever I thought.
37:51
But BMWs always have my heart.
37:54
I think at one point I was completely over it and Josh has been like bugging me
37:59
to get back into the 2002 game.
38:01
And I was like, I'm over it.
38:03
I'm done, but I'm coming back.
38:07
He likes to like live through others, you know.
38:10
Josh lives rent free in my head and back in my head.
38:14
He has a fucking apartment here and he's not paying rent.
38:20
Like I'll be like, I'm over BMW at the end of conversation.
38:24
And then like at two o'clock in the morning and then Josh was like,
38:28
look at this, 2002 bro, 16 grand will pick it up.
38:31
And I'm like, I'll go look at it.
38:34
Hopefully he'll take it.
38:35
And on that note, let's take a minute to ask Victor about what he's driving
38:43
He's going to get on me because he thinks I love convertibles,
38:46
which now that I think about it, I've owned a good amount of convertibles
38:50
I've owned a good amount of convertibles.
38:52
So my only BMW, by the way, I've owned was a M Roadster,
38:58
That's what got Josh thinking like, why the roads are not the clown shoes?
39:00
Well, they're worth half the price.
39:02
Every season of clown shoes prices now.
39:04
That's one convertible he mentioned.
39:06
Why the girl version and not the man version?
39:10
Hey, the cars that have feminine, like design cues usually have the most
39:16
Like the curvy, you know, not so sharp edges.
39:19
So for me, I'm always looking for a car that's worth the most.
39:22
But they answer your question.
39:24
What are 996, 911, Cabriolet?
39:31
So that's all I care about.
39:33
But yeah, I mean, I think like what you were mentioning between BMW and
39:37
Mercedes, like at the end of the day, Porsche or whatever it is,
39:40
the driving experience is going to be different depending on which brand
39:43
you choose or which brand you, you know, love to get C timing.
39:47
But you don't have to have your favorite, right?
39:49
They're all great for their own reasons.
39:50
Like, you know, BMW ultimate driving machine analog, you know, stiff
39:54
steering, like they're known for being very rigid type of vehicles,
39:59
Like Mercedes is more luxury comfort, right?
40:02
The air conditioning might be blown colder.
40:08
But look, at the end of the day, everyone has it's something for
40:12
And you don't have to choose.
40:13
So I'm glad you actually didn't choose a specific one because
40:15
obviously there is no, there is no right answer.
40:18
There shouldn't be.
40:19
There shouldn't be lines drawn between, oh, I'm a BMW guy.
40:22
I feel like that's more of a modern thing.
40:25
You know, I feel like we're all older.
40:27
So we just appreciate cars, right?
40:29
Like you see a cause worth and you're like, oh, it's a Mercedes
40:33
You're like, dude, that's a sick car, you know?
40:35
But I feel like it's like a newer where it's like, oh,
40:37
you'll see a lot of modern BMWs would like buy AMG or ha ha
40:42
And it's like, why?
40:43
Why are we, you know, we don't need to have, there's no point
40:46
in having a rivalry.
40:47
I think if you're German engineering, you're, you're a home.
40:52
Like there's, there's a marrying cars.
40:53
I like, you know, like, I mean, I drive a Ford every day,
40:55
but like, you know, I, I think we need to be more appreciative
40:59
of just being a car person, you know, like just, just,
41:02
you know, like that's a cool car.
41:03
Like there's never, I don't see someone's car.
41:05
I'm like, oh, that's, oh, what is that?
41:06
Oh, that's a Hellcat.
41:09
Where do we expect all builds, bro?
41:12
No, just like, there's certain things about certain
41:15
Like, would I own one?
41:16
Probably not, but I'm not going to hate on it just because
41:18
I'm not, you know, I don't have one or wasn't into it,
41:22
That takes me back to, oh, Roy remembers, remember
41:27
back in the nineties when you would see the Calvin
41:30
like peeing on the other brand.
41:34
Like you're driving a Mercedes, Calvin's peeing on
41:37
That was, that was like, it was a wild time.
41:40
We got to bring it back.
41:42
Love a cartoon of Josh.
41:44
Like just peeing, like you had a Honda and your,
41:47
your Calvin was peeing on like a Toyota.
41:49
Like, I don't like Toyota's, man.
41:51
Like my Calvin sticker.
41:53
You know what I feel?
41:57
If you look at analog and grit, right?
41:58
Look at the members here.
41:59
Everyone has a wide variety of cars, right?
42:01
There's, there's Alfa Romeo's, there's Porsche's,
42:03
Audi's, Volkswagen, literally every single brand,
42:07
So like, when you think about it,
42:09
like we're a good representation of what the
42:11
car enthusiast community should look like.
42:15
So can't hate on that.
42:17
Before we wrap up, we got about 20 minutes.
42:19
I want to talk about values, right?
42:20
So let's go down the list here.
42:22
I want to get your guesses, right?
42:24
We'll start with E30 since it's the,
42:27
What do you guys think is the value,
42:29
average value, right?
42:31
And we're only talking coops with the manual.
42:33
So when you're thinking of the other M3s,
42:35
just think of coop manual, right?
42:37
Cause that's the ultimate one, Josh.
42:40
You know, Cabriolets aren't worth as much.
42:42
What do you think the E30 M3 average price is?
42:46
So not the highest price, the average price.
42:50
He's like, I'll give him, no.
42:51
So the E30 M3, that's a,
42:53
that's a wild example to start with.
42:55
Because as we were discussing Mike and I earlier,
42:58
that thing is all over the map.
43:00
If we're talking about current 2025 values,
43:03
I would say minimum.
43:05
Um, and, and not even discussing salvage title
43:10
or, or broken motor cars.
43:12
If you're talking about a running,
43:14
driving, clean title E30 M3,
43:16
you're looking at at least 75 grand.
43:20
I'm not, I'm not gonna say anything.
43:21
I want you guys to guess first.
43:23
And that, and that's like you,
43:24
that's like a friend of a friend of a friend.
43:28
You got a good price.
43:30
You got like, that's like,
43:31
if you don't buy it today,
43:32
then you, you missed a boat.
43:34
It's going to bring a trailer for 100 grand.
43:37
So like, I would say 100 grand,
43:42
Mid 60s is probably average.
43:45
Just to, cause we were talking,
43:46
there's the, you know,
43:48
Oh, I found this E30 with not a running motor,
43:52
but it has parts of a motor for 25,000,
43:55
but it needs paint.
43:58
but I would say if,
43:59
if you can't call it E30 M3,
44:01
like running, driving, clean title,
44:03
60 grand and average price.
44:07
if you showed me a $60,000 clean title,
44:08
running, driving M3 today,
44:10
we would all collectively buy it today.
44:13
That, that wouldn't be average.
44:16
I'm just saying based on a search,
44:17
it's probably going to,
44:18
it's not going to put all that into account.
44:19
So just to answer his question.
44:24
So you said mid 60,
44:26
Roy, what do you got?
44:27
I'm going to go with 75.
44:31
well you should have stuck to your guns
44:32
because you said 75.
44:33
Average price is 74,150.
44:40
Roamed it and got it.
44:41
Roamed it and got it.
44:42
I'll give him 20 grand.
44:43
It was, it was already too much for Roan.
44:46
He could have gone on some long tangent.
44:48
He would have gone on some long tangent.
44:52
Well, the evos are all over 100.
44:59
74,150 for an 87 and 91 M3 coupe.
45:02
So that's obviously the highest
45:07
You should have stuck to your guns.
45:10
100,000 probably for like the most,
45:12
because when you look at what they do is
45:14
they comprise all the data from cars and
45:16
bids, bring a trailer,
45:17
Haggerty Marketplace.
45:18
The prices within the last year or two
45:22
Oh, they were a lot more.
45:23
And it is down if you look at the metric
45:26
Last year was wild.
45:28
So maybe last year,
45:29
two years ago, 100 grand.
45:31
And I think they're still going down.
45:32
So maybe in another year or two,
45:34
they'll be back down to 65 or something.
45:36
Why did I even invest in this building?
45:38
That's a car you're having for life.
45:43
Yeah, you'd never do wrong.
45:45
That's why Ethan, my son's like,
45:46
no, you got to make it slick top.
45:48
Because it had a center if I'm like,
45:49
nope, just got to be slick top for me.
45:53
Let's move on to E36.
45:55
So what do you guys think a manual
45:57
coupe M3 E36 goes for?
46:07
I think you're high.
46:11
So this is clean top.
46:12
These are all clean title, right?
46:22
I'm going to cut the middle.
46:28
Where's the mileage going on this?
46:32
So like I said, it's average price.
46:34
It's going to take all the listings of sold data.
46:38
And it's going to comprise that into an average price.
46:40
So average mileage on that car is probably 100,000 miles.
46:44
I'm going to go with 18.
46:48
Just because of how the markets kind of dropped on cars.
46:53
So I'll go with 18.
46:54
What are you at makes?
46:57
And you're doing $1.
46:59
He goes by prices right rules.
47:02
So if you go over your DQ.
47:18
Why did I sign over the title already?
47:19
Raining BMW champs.
47:21
And these are going up.
47:22
So the indicator here is that they're going up, which they are.
47:25
Because if you look at what I was telling you about earlier,
47:29
that got appraised, I was shocked.
47:32
Low mileage examples are hard to find.
47:35
Shout out to Roy for selling me that E36 M3 so cheap.
47:41
So you feel good now?
47:42
And just throwing a bunch of parts too?
47:45
He's like about those carbon door panels.
47:48
You want to get them out of the LR4 before I leave?
47:51
So 27,865, it's green with the arrow going up.
47:54
So that's indicating that it's increasing in value.
47:57
But real quick, let's talk about it.
47:59
Why do you think they're going up in value?
48:01
I think it's because the E30 M3 seems almost unattainable
48:05
for the majority of people.
48:07
I think that's where.
48:08
And the platform, honestly, the E36, I've got so much love
48:14
They're great cars.
48:16
You can work on them.
48:17
There's so many parts available for those cars.
48:21
That's the next best M3 to the E30 M3.
48:25
And so the same thing, I think we're all too young to remember,
48:28
but when the E36 M3 came out,
48:31
the E30 M3 was like pennies on the dollar.
48:35
They're like, why do I want that old crappy E30
48:37
when I can get the E36?
48:39
And so now that same phenomenon is happening
48:44
I think it's a combination of the E30 M3,
48:47
like Roy mentioned, is pretty much unattainable
48:51
And the E46 is everyone's halo car.
48:54
I remember growing up in the car,
48:56
earlier on in the car scene,
48:58
and the E36 was like the clapped out car
49:01
that someone pulled up in the car of me.
49:03
And I feel like that's the equivalent to the 996 Porsche.
49:06
Like I'm not saying it's the ugly child.
49:08
What I'm saying is everyone wanted the E30 M3,
49:12
I've never seen the E46 M3.
49:14
And I was like, oh my God, that's the car.
49:16
And it was in a video game underground,
49:18
and so I remember those two cars being like the Mecca.
49:21
And then like all the kids were buying up,
49:24
you know, the E36 M3's, you know,
49:27
cutting the springs and straight piping it.
49:29
So I think now it's because I said the attainable car,
49:33
kind of like the 996 Porsche is,
49:35
whereas like in price range,
49:37
people are like, oh, this is affordable.
49:39
I can't, I got a nice clean E46 M3's
49:42
kind of out of my price range.
49:44
Very clean E30 M3's out my price range.
49:46
So this is the next big thing.
49:47
E36, and they were cheap.
49:48
Like, well, and they had automatic versions,
49:50
you know, so you can get an automatic sedan for nothing.
49:53
You know, for forever, there were two grand, three grand.
49:56
So it's like, oh, I can buy an M3,
49:58
because a lot of people buy the car
50:00
based on it being an M3.
50:02
They don't know anything about it other than,
50:04
oh, I'm going to buy an M3.
50:08
We interrupt this regularly.
50:10
Hell, that's the real version.
50:13
So for the people who can't see,
50:15
Mike Hess Brewery just sent us
50:18
the proof of the new Rensoft
50:22
which we're hosting here at InShop
50:24
at Analog and Grid headquarters.
50:26
And it's got Roy Prince,
50:31
on the can per your request.
50:34
Yeah, right there on the can.
50:37
So you got your own beer now, brother.
50:41
Just have his signature on it.
50:43
I love what you mentioned,
50:45
because I literally said the same exact thing
50:47
in the last two episodes of this podcast,
50:49
where the 996 got skipped over,
50:51
the E36 got skipped over,
50:53
because when E30, and then no one was like,
50:55
the E36 is like, you know.
50:57
I think also the watered-down engine,
50:59
that we didn't get the European,
51:01
that we didn't get the Euro motor.
51:04
Yeah, that hurts too, because it's like,
51:06
the S52 was what, 240 horsepower,
51:08
and it had the emissions restrictions,
51:10
and it just wasn't as powerful.
51:12
Also the body, you could take any E36,
51:15
get M3 kit, and it could look the same.
51:19
So there was a lot of forgery out there.
51:22
But it's still an M3, right?
51:24
To your point, the 996 is still a 911.
51:27
So why am I going to pay double?
51:30
We have the Rome discount here.
51:33
It's the car that's half the price.
51:36
Right, what did we say, 28?
51:38
I'm going to have to trademark that now.
51:42
We're going to have to trademark that.
51:44
But like, hey, do you accept the Rome discount here?
51:47
Well, what's that? That's half.
51:49
Half the price of its predecessor, right?
51:51
The E30, which I get.
51:53
E30 has the halo effect.
51:55
It's a modification special.
51:57
Yeah, third of the price.
51:59
Well, either way, go ahead.
52:01
I wanted you to actually,
52:03
I know you were mentioning something.
52:05
I think the car has aged well.
52:08
The E36 has gone to the point where now it's people like us
52:11
that are looking for the nice one.
52:14
Because we all know some of these cars can be investments.
52:19
And I think the E36 is one that we'll slowly appreciate.
52:23
So I think people are looking for low mileage, nice clean examples.
52:27
But they're just great cars.
52:29
There could be people like, I've never had any 36,
52:31
but if I could, I would buy one just because I'm like,
52:34
you know, everybody says they're so awesome.
52:36
I've driven them on my built-in, but I've never had one.
52:39
And they're classic.
52:41
I mean, it's a car you really,
52:43
with my company's status group, everyone's like,
52:48
Like I would put a wing on the lightweight wing
52:50
and lower it and it looks great.
52:51
You should have still done the UUC version
52:53
with the little gurney flap.
52:55
We were going to remake something
52:58
and make our own risers and stuff.
53:00
I don't know if we will, but it's just a great looking car.
53:03
I think it's just, it's getting to that point
53:05
where it looks really good.
53:06
You know, it's like we love the E30 so much.
53:09
Now people a little bit younger than us are like,
53:12
oh, the E36 is amazing.
53:14
I think it's great.
53:15
I think the younger generation
53:17
gravitating toward analog cars is incredible.
53:20
Like the young 20-somethings,
53:22
they don't want to drive Teslas.
53:24
They don't want to look at screens.
53:25
They want to shift.
53:26
They want to see gauges.
53:27
You know, they want analog stuff, which I love.
53:30
So back to the riser thing,
53:31
like what would make your risers different
53:35
So I was, I was, what was that?
53:38
No, so what I was scanning,
53:40
I did some 3D scanning of a UUC wing.
53:42
And the UUC wing didn't have risers.
53:44
So it's just a short wing with a gurney flap.
53:47
So I was going to make my own risers for it
53:50
and then make our own version of it.
53:53
And would that gurney flap be adjustable?
53:55
It had three different adjustment points.
53:58
Because they stopped making it.
54:00
So I believe they stopped making it.
54:03
We need to make that.
54:04
So I had a bunch of people like,
54:05
they were all excited like,
54:07
There's six of them.
54:10
We got a reason now.
54:12
It's a good point you made with the,
54:14
you know, us getting the U.S. version,
54:16
which was strangled, right?
54:18
The S52, I feel like that was the reason
54:20
it got skipped over.
54:21
So like the 996 got skipped over
54:23
because of headlights, right?
54:24
Or the fact that it's now the first,
54:26
you know, water cooled, right?
54:28
So if you think about it,
54:30
they're not valid reasons.
54:32
Like, yeah, I guess the engine, right?
54:34
We want performance, but it's not like
54:36
that car is not reliable, right?
54:38
The time difference in those cars,
54:39
zero to 60 was barely anything, you know?
54:41
But the sound, you know, there was a lot of it,
54:43
but I think that was kind of a,
54:45
not a made up reason, but you're just like,
54:47
oh, we didn't get the good motor.
54:49
It's like, how do you know the difference anyways?
54:51
You don't, you know?
54:52
It's like, there's still a great car.
54:54
I remember, I have a core memory of,
54:57
I was probably 18, 19,
55:00
out of high school, and, you know,
55:04
I don't know what I was doing.
55:05
It was like midday partying, some,
55:07
for some reason, and a buddy who had just,
55:09
it was like a buddy's cousin had a super clean silver,
55:13
I think it was a silver E36 on Brayton wheels,
55:17
you know, exhaust, a whole bunch of stuff,
55:20
And he's like, I need you to drive this somewhere.
55:22
And I just remember just, I was probably a little drunk,
55:25
but I'm just slammed through gear,
55:27
driving like an asshole.
55:28
And it was amazing.
55:30
And the car was like a year old at that point, you know,
55:32
they were brand new.
55:33
And I'm like, just do you want me to drive this brand new BMW?
55:35
And I'm like, all right, whatever, you know,
55:37
and just egging me on to drive it.
55:39
But that was my first experience in the E36.
55:41
And it was awesome.
55:44
And I always loved that wheel too,
55:46
the Brayton inspirations on there.
55:48
So what do you guys think values for an E46 M3 are?
55:51
So let's start guessing.
55:54
Mike makes has already been like annihilating the competition.
55:58
He's brought up is the platform he's most familiar on.
56:01
Let's see if he knows it.
56:04
Price is right rules, manual coupe.
56:06
So it's more than an E36.
56:08
I'm going to go with 50.
56:26
Honestly, I want to say it's going to be right around the same as the E36.
56:31
The values of E46s were crazy two years ago.
56:35
But a lot of like the E30, like there was everything was crazy two years ago.
56:38
Everything's dropped down.
56:40
You said 27 on the E36.
56:42
I said 248 on the E36.
56:45
I want to say it's under 30 grand.
56:48
It's going to be like 28 grand.
56:51
I'm terrible at this game.
56:52
Let's say 28 to 34.
56:54
That was the E36 was 28, right?
56:57
So what's your what's your number for E46?
57:02
I want to say 28 to 34.
57:04
So let's cut the middle 30.
57:07
30 grand I think is is average price.
57:13
Look at what I said.
57:20
He's like you want to buy an E46?
57:25
So going down as you can see for the M3 group.
57:31
And it's the opposite for the E36.
57:33
So just to kind of give you reference the SMGs are getting 25.
57:37
So you can get an SMG E46 for less than an average E36 manual.
57:42
And convertibles Josh 24,000.
57:45
They're worth the least.
57:46
You can get an SMG convertible 24,000.
57:49
SMG convertibles 15 grand.
57:53
So a manual convertible.
57:54
A manual convertible.
57:55
I'll convert it for you.
57:58
There's your next convertible.
57:59
10 grand less for a manual convertible.
58:05
What are you going to say?
58:10
Left the rubble on.
58:12
He ain't feeling well.
58:13
Gave the rum discount.
58:15
So I want to show you guys a quick chart.
58:17
Like this is what it was in 2021.
58:20
So average price was about 15,000 for an E36.
58:24
So you can kind of see like.
58:31
You see the spike of E46.
58:32
E30 phenomenon happening to E36.
58:34
It's the next boxiest car that you can get next to the E30.
58:38
That's just four years that it's gone up like that.
58:39
And I think it's the younger generation that's just like damn.
58:42
Like I now I got enough money.
58:45
Who cares if it's an S52?
58:48
Or it's just like us.
58:49
It could be us that were like, oh, these things are still cheap and we know the price is going
58:54
You know what all of that fall that market crazy.
58:55
You know what else is happening?
58:56
And like the pop culture and like musicians, you know, there are our age 30s and 40s.
59:04
They're using a lot of old cars.
59:05
And you see videos.
59:08
Well, and like look Radwood.
59:09
You know, it's like people are probably buying these cars for certain things, you know,
59:13
like, oh, I can't bring my newer cars.
59:16
I'll buy you older car, mod it up.
59:19
Because you almost feel like you're missing out.
59:21
You know, you hear about how cool these shows are.
59:24
And that's kind of a newer thing.
59:27
So Brian Scotto and Jason Whipple, who Jason Whipple was one of the founders of
59:33
Brian Scotto, we all know from Hoonigan.
59:34
They have a secret Volkswagen show that they're going to be doing.
59:42
If you're not a complete douche and you want to come here, just send me a DM.
59:47
Tell us why you should come.
59:50
So I think that's kind of a, not a new thing, but I think there's, there's people who
59:54
are influential are going to be starting doing similar things like that.
59:58
Just kind of bringing back, you know, cause like I know and Brian, Brian from forever
00:03
going Volkswagen days in the Northeast.
00:05
But we had like such a cool scene.
00:09
You know, I feel like that's lost.
00:10
We don't have that scene anymore.
00:11
Like even the BMW scene, it's cool.
00:13
But it's like, if you don't have a G80 on HRE wheels, it's like, oh, or BBS is your car
00:18
is not cool anymore.
00:21
And it's like no one's doing something different.
00:25
And it's like, like, so I made, shout out to my own brand, Grail brand, but we made
00:28
a grill for the, for the G80s to make it look like the older cars splits across
00:34
It's interchangeable.
00:35
You can have different options and stuff.
00:38
At first I was upset because it wasn't like taking off.
00:40
People weren't buying it.
00:42
And, and I'm realizing it's, it's not ahead of its time, but it's just so different.
00:48
That's why people aren't into it, you know, cause it's like, well, this doesn't,
00:52
this isn't that carbon CSL style grill.
00:55
Why is it, you know, like why it's, it's like, it's almost, it hurts their
00:58
brain because it's different, you know?
01:00
But that's why you're here.
01:01
You're here to hurt brains.
01:03
So I'm like, and so I don't get upset because I made it because I wanted to
01:06
you know, it's like, cool.
01:07
I think it looks cool.
01:08
The cars I put on it looks cool, but, but I think that, that's lost now.
01:12
Like this, everybody's building cars to impress people, but they're building
01:17
the same cars everybody else.
01:22
But I think maybe it's not lost.
01:23
Maybe it's coming back.
01:26
But we, we hit the friendships we had were wild, you know?
01:28
And I don't know if these people, like the newer BMWs have that
01:31
friendship, you know?
01:32
It's like, they go to the car shows and then they're like just
01:34
sitting there and it's like, walk around, meet some people, talk to
01:38
And it's like, or they're like, they'll see someone they know from
01:41
the internet and they won't talk to him in person and they'll
01:44
message them after.
01:47
Dude, you kind of walked up and talked to the dude.
01:49
I love how you mentioned that.
01:50
I went to a car event.
01:52
I'm not going to say which one it was, but it went to a car
01:55
event and I was, it was myself and another vintage car,
02:01
Everything else was all newer Porsches, G80s, F80s.
02:05
And they were actually like doing votes on what car did they,
02:09
Dean was like the best looking car.
02:11
And I'm not big on like the whole trophy thing.
02:13
And I ended up pulling out way before they started this stuff.
02:17
And my girl was like, why did you leave?
02:19
I was like, no one cares about these old cars and you're
02:22
mixed in with all the newer modern stuff.
02:24
I'm not saying the modern tech and modern cars aren't
02:28
I love them, you know?
02:29
That being my thing.
02:30
But like we mentioned before, the G80s great, the F80s great,
02:34
I had two of them, two E90 and three.
02:37
But like once you do one, you do them all.
02:39
And like you have to do like the subtle Volkswagen thing is do
02:42
little things and make a change.
02:43
But if I see a G80 on HREs or BBSs, that's maybe a manual
02:47
and it has carbon, no lip and a, you know, trunk lid.
02:53
I've seen that 800.
02:55
It's like Skittles.
02:56
Open a bag of Skittles.
02:58
With some little, you know, you know, gooping in between.
03:00
I feel like it's kind of the same thing.
03:02
That's why I kind of like, like Josh likes to harp on,
03:05
like driving just driving classic.
03:07
There's so much character behind it.
03:09
And they're easier to fix.
03:11
You were feeling like the Sauer Skittle then.
03:15
Very sour, very bitter.
03:16
But it's funny because you talked about people don't talk
03:19
to people at these events.
03:21
When I left a couple of people DM me like, dude, we had
03:26
I was like, well, y'all were the two of those.
03:29
I know that's for the love.
03:31
Half of you didn't come talk to me.
03:33
Come say what's up.
03:34
And I was standing here in the heat and dying, you know.
03:36
But it's one of those things that I like now when people
03:39
are starting to get back into these old cars and really
03:46
My son, who's about to join the military himself,
03:49
when I bought him his FRS, he, I was trying to buy
03:55
Because I was the first car he learned to drive
03:57
manual and it was my old Malaga red one.
04:00
And he was like, I don't want to drive that old
04:04
And then he, I got an FRS manual.
04:06
I put wheels and suspension and the whole nine
04:09
So he was stunting in school.
04:10
And literally two weeks later, he called me and
04:13
was like, I wish I would have got that 2002.
04:16
I'm like, why is this?
04:17
Because he probably sees a bunch of FRS guys.
04:18
Yeah, that was exactly what it was.
04:19
That was his friends.
04:20
He could stand out with a cool car.
04:21
His friends were in his ear like, you don't
04:23
want to drive that old thing.
04:24
But he was the only kid driving a cool car.
04:25
Technically all his friends had like, you know,
04:27
fusions and poor fusions and whatever else,
04:29
like, you know, Camry's not saying those aren't
04:32
That's why the FRS was a flex.
04:34
It was a flex for him.
04:35
But he felt like he blended in with everyone
04:38
He was like, man, the 2002 is fun.
04:39
I'm like, yeah, the caveat is you won't have AC.
04:42
And you're in Alabama.
04:45
And the value goes up.
04:46
But he didn't see that.
04:47
No, not at his age.
04:51
Well, Josh, you want to take us home with
04:53
You mentioned Cartoba Fest coming up soon.
04:55
What's the dates on that?
04:58
So we're going to do Cartoba Fest here at
05:00
Analog and Grid headquarters.
05:02
It is going to be on the 25th of October here
05:07
at 3025 Commercial Street.
05:12
And we're going to have beer from Mike Hess.
05:15
We're going to have cars, bring your German
05:19
It really doesn't matter if you got a German
05:21
beer to hang out and have fun.
05:22
We're going to have food.
05:23
We're going to have beer.
05:24
We're going to have music.
05:25
Or if you bring, if you show up in an
05:28
Endurndl, which is the traditional German
05:30
dress or Liederhosen, then you drink for free.
05:33
So people say, I'm not dressing up.
05:35
But then when you say there's free beer,
05:37
then people are like, oh, yeah.
05:38
Honey, where's my Liederhosen?
05:39
I'm on Amazon right now.
05:41
I'm looking for one.
05:42
I'm going to get it.
05:48
So throw your feather in your cap.
05:51
See what we're all about on October 25th.
05:55
And it's going to be great.
05:57
Last year we had it at Mike Hess and Alpine,
06:01
This time we're going to have it in-house.
06:03
We got quite a bit more room here.
06:05
And it's going to be incredible.
06:08
You don't want to miss it.
06:10
Also, we have a Dodge Viper that we wanted
06:12
to talk about that we have for sale.
06:17
Speaking of not anything that has to do
06:19
with anything, analog and grip marketplace,
06:24
It's a sapphire blue Dodge Viper 2001.
06:27
It's got 30,000 miles.
06:29
The car of your dreams can be had now.
06:33
Speaking of German, we have this Viper for sale.
06:39
It is a beautiful spec.
06:41
Cognac interior on that navy blue exterior.
06:44
It has the more modern rims because it's pretty much
06:46
was that last year of the GTS.
06:49
It's got to be somewhere around there.
06:52
Let's defer to our...
06:55
So that's live now for sale on analog and grip marketplace.
07:00
Well, look, thank you guys for joining the show.
07:03
Thanks for having us.
07:07
Josh, as always, of course,
07:08
until next week on the analog and grip podcast.
