Delve into the critical importance of brake systems in this engaging discussion, focusing on the real-world costs associated with brake repairs. Nile Jenkins shares insights from industry estimates, emphasizing the necessity of using parking brakes, even in automatic vehicles, to prevent costly repairs. With a detailed breakdown of a 2017 Dodge Ram 1500's brake system, listeners will learn how neglecting rear brakes can lead to more significant issues and expenses. The episode combines humor with practical advice, making it a valuable resource for vehicle maintenance.
Brakes Are one of the most common-and most misunderstood -repair bills drivers face. In this episode, we break real world brake system repair costs using actual shop estimates, not internet guesses.
We cover:
1) pads, rotors, calipers & hardware
2) Labour Costs and why they vary
3) What's included in a proper brake job ( and what isn't )
4) Why "cheap brake specials" can cost you more later
This kicks off a multi - part series where we'll continue sharing real estimates straight from the shop - parts, labour, and all the extras included. No scare tactics, No fluff. Just honest numbers so you can make smarter decisions before approving a brake repair.
If you drive a vehicle, this episode can save you money.

"...you know, we've gone from internal combustion engines with carburetors kids today don't even know what a carburetor is..."
Internal combustion engines are the most common type of engine in cars. They work by burning fuel to create energy that moves the car.
Internal combustion engines are engines that generate power by burning fuel and air inside a combustion chamber. This process creates a series of controlled explosions that push pistons, ultimately powering the vehicle.
"...with carburetors kids today don't even know what a carburetor is then we went to feedback carburetor..."
A carburetor is a part of older car engines that mixes air and fuel together so the engine can run. Many modern cars use a different system called fuel injection instead.
A carburetor is a device in older internal combustion engines that mixes air with fuel for combustion. It regulates the ratio of air to fuel to ensure efficient engine performance.
"Multi-point fuel injection and think about that for a minute acronyms...Then it went feedback carburetor then it went throttle body injection then it went MPFI..."
Multi-point fuel injection means that each part of the engine gets its own little spray of fuel, making it run better and more efficiently. It's a modern way to help engines get the right amount of fuel.
Multi-point fuel injection (MPFI) is a fuel delivery system where each cylinder has its own fuel injector, allowing for more precise control of the fuel-air mixture and better engine performance compared to single-point systems.
"Today we're gonna cover because I have an estimate for it. Parking brake how important that rear parking brake system is to the rest of the braking system on the rear."
The parking brake is a special brake that you use to keep your car from moving when it's parked. It's important for safety, especially if you're on a hill.
The parking brake, also known as the handbrake or emergency brake, is a crucial component of a vehicle's braking system. It is designed to keep the vehicle stationary when parked and is especially important for safety, as it can prevent the car from rolling away when parked on an incline.
"Parking brake how important that rear parking brake system is to the rest of the braking system on the rear."
The braking system is what helps your car slow down or stop when you press the brake pedal. It includes parts like brake pads and rotors that work together to make your car stop safely.
The braking system of a vehicle is composed of various components that work together to slow down or stop the vehicle. This includes the brake pads, rotors, calipers, and in some cases, the parking brake system, which is essential for maintaining control and safety while driving.
Rotors are round metal discs in your car's braking system. When you press the brakes, the pads squeeze against the rotors to help slow down the car.
Rotors are metal discs that are part of the braking system. When the brake pads press against the rotors, they create friction that slows down the vehicle. Proper maintenance of rotors is essential for effective braking performance and safety.
"...the Niagara region City Auto Sales and leasing that's Earl and Louise Grant. They've earned the title..."
This is a car dealership that sells used cars. They focus on selling cars that have low mileage and are in good condition.
Niagara region City Auto Sales and leasing is a pre-owned auto dealership located in the Greater Toronto Area. They specialize in providing low mileage, high-quality vehicles and have been in business for over 25 years.
The Dodge Ram 1500 is a large truck that can be used for work or personal use. It's known for being powerful and comfortable to drive, making it a good choice for carrying heavy loads or going on trips.
The Dodge Ram 1500 is a full-size pickup truck known for its strong performance, comfortable ride, and versatile capabilities. It is popular among both work and recreational users due to its towing capacity and range of available features.
"...for your average Joe Commuter car what it's cost for rear rear brakes including the emergency brake because we can't do the rear brakes..."
The emergency brake is a special brake that you use to keep your car from moving when it's parked. It's important to use it, especially on hills, to make sure your car stays still.
The emergency brake, also known as the parking brake, is a secondary braking system used to keep a vehicle stationary when parked. It is especially important for safety, as it prevents the car from rolling away when parked on an incline.
"...more than likely nine times out of 10 the calipers are going to be done because you burn the brakes right down to nothing..."
Calipers are parts of your car's brakes that hold the brake pads and push them against the discs to help stop the car. If they get worn out, they might need to be replaced to ensure your brakes work well.
Calipers are the components that house the brake pads and apply pressure to the rotors when the brakes are engaged. They are essential for the braking system to function properly and often need replacement if they become damaged or worn.
"Oh, I look in the rear view mirror. He's uh drafting with me..."
Drafting is when one car drives closely behind another car to go faster. It helps the second car because it has less wind pushing against it.
Drafting is a technique used in racing where a driver closely follows another vehicle to reduce air resistance. This allows the trailing car to gain speed more easily and can help in overtaking the leading car.
An on ramp is a road that lets cars get onto a highway. It helps drivers speed up to match the traffic on the highway.
An on ramp is a short road that allows vehicles to enter a highway or freeway. It typically has a gradual incline to help vehicles accelerate to the speed of traffic.
"...the park brake is not working because you've never used it. It's all rotted out the backing plates that hold the shoes are rotted out..."
Backing plates are parts of the braking system that hold the brake shoes in place. They help the brakes work properly by providing a surface for the shoes to push against when you stop the car.
Backing plates are components that support the brake shoes in drum brake systems. They provide a surface for the shoes to press against when the brakes are applied, and they also help to protect the brake components from dirt and debris.
"Because now you got to take the differential you got to pull the axles out and it's not as easy as you think. It's a lot more work"
A differential helps your car's wheels turn at different speeds, especially when going around corners. This makes driving smoother and helps prevent tire wear.
A differential is a mechanical component that allows the wheels to rotate at different speeds, which is essential for turning. It helps distribute power from the engine to the wheels while enabling smoother cornering.
"So the rear brake shoes. The little teeny weeny shoes. I call them miniatures."
Brake shoes are parts that help stop the car by pressing against the inside of round brake drums. They are usually smaller than the pads used in disc brakes.
Brake shoes are components of drum brake systems that press against the inside of the drum to create friction and slow down the vehicle. They are typically smaller than brake pads used in disc brake systems.
"It's an automatic transmission and the parking brake is it's not it's not a necessity..."
An automatic transmission is a system in a car that changes gears on its own, so you don't have to do it manually. This makes driving easier, especially in stop-and-go traffic.
An automatic transmission is a type of vehicle transmission that automatically changes the gear ratios as the vehicle moves, freeing the driver from having to shift gears manually. This system allows for smoother acceleration and is common in modern vehicles.
"On a lot of vehicles adjust helps to adjust the rear brake pads So that you have more braking on the rear and the rear brake pads are adjusted"
Rear brake pads are the parts that help stop the car by pressing against the wheels at the back. They work together with the front brakes to make sure the car stops safely and evenly.
Rear brake pads are components of a vehicle's braking system that apply friction to the brake rotors to slow down or stop the vehicle. They are crucial for effective braking performance, especially in maintaining balance between the front and rear brakes.
"As you're applying the brakes and we're going to talk about brake application in a few moments here stay with me"
Brake application is when you press the brake pedal to make the car slow down or stop. It's important to do this correctly to ensure the car stops safely.
Brake application refers to the process of engaging the brakes to slow down or stop a vehicle. Proper brake application is crucial for safe driving and can affect the performance of the braking system.
"...in conjunction with your disc brake portion on the rear..."
Disc brakes help cars stop by using pads to squeeze a round metal disc. They are better at handling heat and stopping power compared to older brake systems.
Disc brakes are a type of braking system that uses friction to slow down or stop a vehicle. They consist of a brake disc, caliper, and brake pads, and are known for their effectiveness in dissipating heat.

Absolutely, so keep an eye join the crew this morning because this is
Car connection your Monday through Saturday morning pit stop for stories smarts and a few good laughs
And I'm Nile motormouth Jenkins coming to you clearly
From the car connection workshop. Well as promised this morning
We're gonna be talking about brake systems
This is I think it was part four. Yeah part four
Real world repair costs, so I have more estimates coming in
But I have one that I can share with you today, but over I want to show you the overall picture
So I know that the shops are busy and I've called on a couple of guys to put some estimates together for me and they're coming in
This got one about an hour ago
The guys are out always the guys I know are up early like I am
I think they're the same thing afraid of the dark well
Let's start with having a swiggy this morning before our coffee or morning beverage gets cold
Here's how we do it in the car connection workshop. I count it down three two one
We have a cup a sip what we call a swiggy. Let's have a swiggy together three two one
I'm afraid to say mine is already
Cold we'll have to fix that after the program
Mm-hmm
Little nasty. I'm gonna give that a nine on the nasty meter
Anyhow, I hope you had a great weekend. It's another work week ahead. The weather is gonna be kooky
We're getting back into the cold weather be careful out there. There is some black ice that kind of miserable stuff
I've had my dealings with that in the past well
Car connection is brought to you by and we're grateful to have our program partners and sponsors
And you can find everything that we talk about
Lives at our website, it's the biggest drawer that we have in our toolbox
So everything that I talk about you can head to car connection business network.com that's CC
BUS is in Sam any t.com and I always include that in the link on our YouTube
Videos all the everything that we talk about is also in the description box of our podcast and our YouTube videos
We have three videos go up every single week and we're a little ahead of schedule
Which is great on those and some really cool stuff going on in the workshop
And that's where I show you the five things all the time what it is where it is how it works how it breaks and what could you
Have learned about the basics and fundamentals of owning and operating an automobile
You don't have to be a brain surgeon or anything
Just have to be willing to listen and learn remember the do does and the did is done
And that's what it's all about is just arming yourself
With more knowledge the basics because the basics never change from one model to another it's how those
Functions happen. That's what's changed. You know, we've gone from
Internal combustion engines with carburetors kids today don't even know what a carburetor is then we went to feedback carburetor
So it was a carburetor with some electronics on then we went to throttle body injection and that didn't work out too good either
So then we finally went to MP
MPFI
Multi-point fuel injection and think about that for a minute acronyms
Yeah, I got a book of acronyms. It's probably way outdated by now. But anyways, so I
Say that to say fuel delivery was carburetor
Then it went feedback carburetor then it went throttle body injection then it went MPFI
Multi-point fuel injection now we have digital fuel injection with over with coil over plug
You're still fuel and spark delivery to get the engine started
That's the easiest way I can explain to you that the fundamentals never change
We still need air and fuel to get the engine to start. It's how the delivery happens
Where is where things change?
But the basic fundamentals remain the same and that's what I'm teaching you on our YouTube videos and here on the podcast the basic
fundamentals to
create
long
term ownership
So you don't have to throw
Your automobile out in the trash every so many years the whole purpose of everything that I do is to teach you
That you can keep your automobile a lot longer
and
That's what's important is to know enough and
have enough information
that you can
Clearly understand that mileage and age on an autonomy automobile really doesn't matter
If you're taking care of it and you know the basics first so anyhow, I don't want to get off on a tangent
We're gonna be talking about
Today we're gonna cover because I have an estimate for it
Parking brake how important that rear parking brake system is to the rest of the braking system on the rear
Just on the rear of the vehicle and when the rear brakes aren't working properly because they've been
Neglected your front brakes are working harder and you end up burning them out
It usually ends up that the rotors
Warp you get an end up with what we call shake and break when you apply the brakes
The you know, you're filling start coming out of your head
Shake your dentures right out onto the dash and it might even fall into your your morning beverage now that would not be good
Yeah, so we want to help you be able to keep your vehicle
A lot longer than most of you have been now if you hang around with me I
Don't change my vehicles every five years. I keep them 15 20 years
And what I have right now the oldest is a 99
The newest is an 08. Yeah, and so
if you stick with a
Maintenance schedule
You can keep your vehicle as long as you as you want till you get bored of it
I guess we're until you know what vehicles just not working for you

That's out there not just the major ones, but also the smaller platforms so you can find us. Well, let's jump right in
to this morning segment
Which carries on with our break systems, but today's series
It's episode 58
Break systems real world repair costs and we've been talking about
Spending a lot of spending a bunch of time on the rear brakes
Because they are detrimental to your vehicles braking system
And if you're not using your parking brake set brake emergency brake, whatever you want to call it that you're really missing the boat
That the the emergency brake even if your vehicles an automatic transmission fellas
You need to use it because it is an integral component to
providing
100% braking to the rear brakes to take the pressure off the front brakes
So if you don't understand that much
Then you're going to continue to have problems and it's costing your fortune on the rear brakes
So I had I want to thank Bill Maher at Garrison Automotive Service here in the town of Fort Erie
They're one of the biggest shops in town and
He selected a 2017 Dodge Ram 1500
Which he says is really popular and it is there's thousands of them out there and
I
Have some more estimates coming in
for your average Joe
Commuter car what it's cost for rear rear brakes including the emergency brake because we can't do the rear brakes
If we don't have emergency brakes that are working
Yeah, the system needs to all work together. So fellas
Stop saying
We have an automatic, honey. We don't need to use the parking brake. Yes, you do
But if you decide that no you aren't that's okay. You know why it's not my car
If you go out to the front of the car connection workshop and look in the windows of any vehicle parked there or on the
Secondary driveway any vehicles parked there. You will see that the parking brake is on
And if I just drove around the corner to go to the Avondale store or whatever the drive-through and I'm parking
my parking brake goes on and
Yes, they're automatics some are automatics. There are a couple of stick shifts out there somewhere. I think there's three
No, too. There's only two
Right at the moment. Yeah
so
Let's break that down and
These are real numbers real numbers folks
So 2017 Dodge Ram 1500 series the braking system on a four-wheel disc brake
Whether it's a pickup truck
Whether it's the car you're driving in right now and thank you for inviting me into your radio this morning in your car. Appreciate that
and um
The systems are the same
same components
different vehicle
Costs
Are going to vary. That's why I've asked for a number of different estimates not my numbers. These are not my numbers. These are pulled right from
um
Well, bill's shop is a Napa auto pro. So this is uh through the automotive services
So they can do a pretty they can do a pretty accurate estimate except for you know, I like the um
The disclaimer on the bottom of the estimate after work has started worn broken or damaged parts may be discovered
Which were not evident upon the initial inspection. So prices on parts and labor are
Current and subject to change and they are parts are parts prices are like spinning the roulette wheel every day
Well, I didn't pay that last week. Well, you know, that's what it is this week
But you can always get into something where
Uh till you take take the components start taking the components off you discover all this isn't good
Or that's not good. That's going to have to be dealt with so they're going to be what what we always called in our own shop
incidentals
Things that we cannot see until we get in there and actually hands on start and begin the job
So on this 2017 dodge ram
1500 series
I asked bill to price out
What it would cost to do the the rear emergency brakes only so to get the system
Back up and running then we're going to do the brakes
because then we have to replace
The disc brake rotors and more than likely
Nine times out of 10 the calipers are going to be done because you burn the brakes right down to nothing
And that's what i'm talking about here
Is i'm trying to help you to get a better understanding this these jackrabbit starts your driving habits are killing your car
And you're out there working hard
like
Harder than a bad bad donkey trading time for money
And you're throwing money right out the car window
I don't think many of you even realize your driving habits
Are costing you a
fortune
in hours
That means you're working a lot of hours for nothing
And that's why i'm here to help you and I I don't mean to come across really hard and heavy
But I don't know how
to get you to understand that
This erratic driving out there
They have it yesterday had
I was leaving my my pops place. We had dinner there. I'm jump. I thought i'm gonna go home instead of back roads
Because the deer are on the move
I don't want a deer hit because that gets expensive. I'll take the highway
I'm on the ramp just trying to get on the highway
This guy's on my bumper. He could have taken my license plate off and taken it home with them
And I see him look just like on nascar
You know, there's a two laps to go
The the white flags gone out
Checker flags coming up
And that what do they do they dive behind the other driver that's in front of them they go left
They go right they go left they go look right they're looking for a hole to get through
I'm watching this guy with my one eye
Out the side mirror. He's on my left
Boom, where did he go? Oh, I look in the rear view mirror. He's uh drafting with me
Then he's on the right
And i'm going this guy's looking for a hole
To pass me on the on ramp
Here's the perfect example
Of what i'm talking about
Why are you driving like that out there? What is the purpose?
What is the purpose? I'll tell you what the results are
You're burning your vehicles up and they've just become a trash bucket item
you know curbside
And it's costing you guys a lot of money in unnecessary repairs. That's where i'm going
like why
Somebody send me a comment through one of our youtube videos or an email at ccbusnet.com
Help me to wrap my head around that because I can't
I can't come up with an answer. Why is this guy
On my tail dodging left dodging right dodging left dodging right drafting
Oh now he's over the left. He thinks he's got a hole
No, it's one lane there onto the highway one lane
It's not two or one plus
Like what is up with that?
I just I cannot wrap my head around that so that's a person
That drives like an idiot on the highway and yeah when he finally got a hole
He passed me on what they call the bullhorn, which is illegal
If you get if a cop sees you he can charge you with that
And then he zips around me just about spinning me out because he's in a hurry
It's like do you know what a ticket is for that about 360 dollars?
Just saying we'll see if we can't line up
A past officer some of the officers that I know to see if we can get somebody to talk about some of the
Fines out there and some of the erratic car driving because this is what's going on
So anyways back to the rear
Emergency brake the park brake set brake whatever lignity you want to use
I'm just going to go with the parking brake
Whether it's a manual transmission or automatic it needs to be used every single day
Every single time
You park that vehicle because it takes 21 days to make or break a habit
So if you've not been using it you need to use it for 21 days straight to create a habit
But we've somehow
Gotten in our mind that that the parking brake is an option
Here's where the problem comes in
Who started that that it's an option
Oh, you don't really need to use that so fellas if that's you please just stop it can it janet
Yeah, that's not correct
It's not correct
Go to our youtube channel
We'd had the brake nationals all summer long
helping people
To save money keep their vehicle going and we are allowed to shoot the videos and keep the vehicle for you know
A number of days, you know a week to 10 days. No, not really not that much but waiting for parts
There were no brakes to work with
And on the back especially
You get into the emergency brake
The park brake is not working because you've never used it. It's all rotted out the backing plates that hold the shoes are rotted out
Now you're into you got to pull the rear differential apart to put backing plates on and I didn't get billed to estimate that
But that is part of it because two vehicles this past summer
They needed the backing plates for placing
In order to put emergency brakes on
That gets expensive
Because now you got to take the differential you got to pull the axles out and it's not as easy as you think
It's a lot more work
There's a thousand dollars there on its own period just to do that
So on this estimate
Bill's put together for us from garrison automotive service. Thank you again bill for doing that bill marries a great fellow
It runs a really good clean shop
And so just to do the emergency brakes. I'm going to go item by item
So that you these aren't my numbers
These are numbers right from if you went into a shop
And they took a look at your 2017 dodge ram 1500 series
Which has all the same components your four-wheel disc brake car has
All the same
Just they're smaller
But the system works the same in most cases. There are others that are more
Intricate the ones that have what we call parking brake lock
It's almost like a line lock when you park the vehicle you hear this buzz my pops has it on his lexus
Blah blah blah whatever number it is. I don't know. I never remember
And you hear it go
It puts it locks the calipers on at the back and those calipers are killer expensive
And we'll get an estimate for that too
Because that system is starting to get more and more popular where the the rear calipers lie. They basically line lock
Yeah, so they're locked right up
So the rear brake shoes
The little teeny weeny shoes. I call them miniatures
They're going to cost you
60 dollars and 61 cents
And the hardware kit because there's never anything left it's all rotted out and and it's over
Another 90 dollars and 70 cents
Then we have the labor
To install those shoes those those parking brake shoes
$470 and 23 cents
Now we're going to need some parking brake cables because they're not working because somebody decided that
It's an automatic transmission and the parking brake is it's not it's not a necessity
And you know what there's is my professor would say there's ignorance with knowledge and ignorance without knowledge
When you don't understand how that system works you can't make that statement you can't
Because then you know how the the parking brake system
Allows the rear brakes to work properly
Because the part of the parking brake
On a lot of vehicles adjust helps to adjust the rear brake pads
So that you have more braking on the rear and the rear brake pads are adjusted
So that the rear of the vehicle grabs before the front
So like a squatting dog dogs going down for a pee
And it gets ready to squat
Right, you see the back legs going down business is going to get taken care of
Well a car is similar when you're applying the brakes the rear of the car should pull back
You should feel the car pulling it from the back
Then the front brakes apply if all you're feeling is the front brakes apply and the front of the car is bowing down
As you're applying the brakes and we're going to talk about brake application in a few moments here stay with me
That's where the front brakes become overheated because the rear brakes are not working a hundred percent
So now we get into parking brake cables. You got one. You got a left side. You got a right side
Left side is going to cost you 160 one side is going to be 165 13 the other side 105 66
Okay, that brings you to a total on that
portion
Of the repair 470 $480 and 71 cents
So the labor
To do the cables is 209 92
You're probably going I can't add this all up crayon guy and leaf bag. Come on. Hurry up get this down
You can go back and re-listen. So it's not a problem
So in total before tax
1232 and 25 cents to a grand total
Of $1,403 and 73 cents
Okay, now fellas
convince me
Four decades as an automotive service tech plus
Convince me that the rear emergency brakes are just
non-essential
Okay, and break it all down for me
All of it how it all works
How it all works together in conjunction with your disc brake portion on the rear
And then we can have a knowledgeable conversation
But in my books from a service tech if it's not all working we can't fix it
Yeah, and so if we go through everything I just talked about
Replacing the rear park brake shoes the hardware kit that comes with it
the labor
And the emergency brake cables because they're seized if they're not working 100 they can't stay on there
Because when the park brake goes on we have to know 100 that it releases as well
And then if you just right you spend all this 1403 dollars and 73 cents
All to get the rear brakes going and then you don't use the parking brake. Do you understand where I'm going with this?
Then you don't use it
He doesn't use it you don't use it he says you don't have to so you don't use it either mama
So you got two people if you're sharing the same car or both created the same wrong habit
The emergency brake is a must
The park brake it must be used every time you park
To keep the rear brakes
moving prevents things from seizing up back there
And that's what's important and depending as I said there's
similar
Setups and then there's others that are even more intricate than that
Yeah, when it comes to rear disc brakes
So they're very similar in pieces parts
But a little different in
Function how the emergency how the parking brake functions along with the disc brakes
So this is one portion of the rear brake repair
The next portion is
calipers
And brake pads
And this doesn't this estimate doesn't include the disc brake rotors where it has a brake drum in the back side of it for the parking brake
So the the disc brake rotor is also it we call it a drum disc because it has both functions
on the disc
So it houses your parking brake system
And it's your brake pads best friend
So there's more
So we'll uh, we will cover the more as the estimates come in because I have a number of them that I've requested
And I know the guys are busy in the shop
So just this one alone 1403 dollars and 73 cents because he says you don't need to use the parking brakes
So nobody's using it
And here's what I have to say don't use it till you have somebody inspect it to make sure that it can work
But if you don't
Begin the process after we go through all that work
Doing pads rotors calipers brake cables
The park brake shoes the hold down kit and the labor that comes along with that guess what happens you start the pattern all over again
So
A great cd to get your hands on if you can is dan solomon. He's a great speaker talks about 21 days
To make or break a habit you're going to need to create that habit that
You use your park brake after we go in there
And gut everything and get it all working
All together
But if that same day and I've seen this same day
You go back into your old habit. Well, it doesn't need we don't need to use it
We'll just use it when we think about it or I'll just use it if the car's on a bit of a grade
No, you have to use it all day every day
Every time that vehicle is parked and the engine shut off park brake should be on
The only time I don't use mine is if I've been out on the roads and the heavy slush
And a snow combination on the roads it can bind up the parking brake cables. So I leave it off overnight
And wait for the sun to come out if we see it
And then I continue to use it. So I will try it in the driveway make sure it releases
And then it goes back on but if I've been driving in slush
When I park it for the day, I don't put it on just in case it freezes and that can happen
So I'm going to leave it there because there's a lot more estimates coming and we're going to continue with
Brake systems real world repair costs
So by the time we're finished, we will have a stack of estabates. I call them
