It's President's Day weekend.

This is a good weekend to get a bargain.

Dealers think volume on these holiday weekends when there's a lot of people off on Monday.

It happens every single time.

And there are also, dealers right now have to think volume

because their inventories are way too big and they need to move some cars.

Besides having too many sitting there, they got a bunch on the way.

They have to pay interest on all those cars.

They kind of got, January was just a really rough month for the auto industry.

I mean, you look nationwide, it was up just a hair from last year,

like 0.02% or something.

It's basically the same as a year ago.

But many dealers had bad, bad, bad weather right at the end of the month when they do the most business.

So they weren't able to sell cars.

Well, that backs up their inventory.

That's where they sit today.

So the incentives are good.

Trade values remain sky high this week when I watched the auction.

Lots going on out there.

It is a good time to trade.

I will always tell you when it's not a good time, I'll always tell you when it is a good time.

What can I do for you, sir?

Hello, Jerry.

I appreciate you taking my call.

It's a pleasure.

As a small gesture of my appreciation for my wife, I bought her a CX-5 Mazda, a mid-sized SUV.

Yeah, it's a great choice.

They just love it.

It's got a Zero W-20 motor oil in it and I've been reading a lot about motor oil.

I've been in the service station business twice in the past and I just, the oil geek,

I've been reading a lot.

He seems to be a sharp guy.

He's funny, but he seems to be sharp.

He says the other countries where they market these cars do not put Zero W-20 in it and

said the US government has done it for the mileage, lower mileage, less friction and so

forth and I just wanted to know your thoughts on it, please.

I disagree with that.

Okay.

I base that on talking to, this Zero W-20, Zero W-30 oil started really being popular

about 20 plus years ago and I was getting questions here on the show because I had a

five-year period where I was doing this show and owned car dealerships.

My service manager, who I trusted explicitly, I called him to my office one day because

I'm starting to get questions on Zero W-20 oil and I said, Gerald, tell me about this.

Why is this happening?

He explained to me and I believe him because he was a master, but these newer engines have

much tighter tolerances inside because we're getting more horsepower out of smaller engines

and I know that to be true.

So the way Gerald explained it to me was the thick oil will not flow through these tight

tolerances like thinner oil will, but he said at that same time doing the oil changes at

the prescribed times is critical nowadays and I believe that.

So I've stuck with Zero W-8 Charles and I would recommend you do too.

Boy, big news this week as right down to the wire when the newsletter being prepared by

Jerry and the staff was ready to go to press then all of a sudden stopped the presses.

Here comes President Trump with the announcement of the stop-start systems going away eventually.

So your thoughts on that?

Well, it needed to happen.

The start-stop has been thrown in my side.

I have not recommended some vehicles that were great cars because you couldn't disable

the start-stop system.

There were some when they first came out somewhere around 2015 they really got popular

around 2018 and there were some cars that you couldn't disable it.

Now the manufacturers figured out pretty quick this ain't making people happy.

So they put a disable button on it and I have never been convinced that there was any

benefits to the start-stop system including fuel economy.

I don't think they did it under the guise of give you 10% more fuel economy BS.

It will not and you start looking at the strain on the starter and the battery.

You take a car that suddenly it's starting and stopping 30 extra times a day or more

and it's going to wear something.

It's just physics.

Something's going to happen.

So I've really been an outspoken person about getting rid of this.

So this tickled me to death.

I never quite understood why the car companies did this in the first place until this week.

What did you find?

I discovered that the car companies were paid by the government with your tax dollars

$2400 for every vehicle they put start-stop on.

And that's the reason they're doing it?

100%

Yeah, follow the money.

Typically that's how you figure stuff out.

It's always follow the money.

Now, I predict that some really smart car company is going to jump up and be the very first to say,

hey, if you'll bring your car in to us, we'll disable that for free.

I'm there tomorrow if they're doing it.

I absolutely hate it.

I hate start-stop.

I hate everything about it.

Yeah, me too.

My wife is like, I want to keep this Bronco I have until they come out with the first edition of the first one without the stop-start.

Then I'm going to trade it in.

Yeah.

Because she's so done with it.

We don't know how long it's going to take to get these systems away out of the cars.

This is all part of a bigger picture of sort of a redoing of the EPA rules that have been out there for now 12, 13 years.

I'm glad to see that happen too.

Yeah, I am too.

I mean, I'm all for conservation.

I'm all for, you know, the environment and all that stuff.

I'm okay with all that, but choice to me when it's your money is the number one issue.

If I want a car, if I want a gas guzzler, I want a gas guzzler.

And last time I checked it was America and I should be able to get me a gas guzzler if that's what I want.

If I want better fuel economy, then that's a choice too.

Sure.

So you want to talk about the start-stop thing?

What can I do for you?

Well, I have a 2023 Toyota Tundra and I have a recall notice on the engine.

Yeah.

They have told me they're going to replace the engine.

Yep.

And I would like to know if such a halot would affect my resale value or trading value that's struck.

How many miles you got on it?

24,000.

Okay.

It's not going to have any effect right now.

Down the road, when you go to get rid of it, it may help, but it certainly won't hurt.

We're not talking about an engine being repaired and torn apart and put back together.

That's one thing.

We're talking about a complete engine replacement.

They send a crate engine straight to the dealership.

About 10 hours later, it's in there and you're running down the road.

These things do not show up on history reports.

And so if you don't tell somebody, they're not going to know.

But down the road, if you go to trade it in, that's something you want to point out to whoever you're trading it into.

It's a, hey, look, my vehicle's got 60,000 miles, but the engine only has 40,000 miles on it.

And it could help the value.

And for sure, it won't hurt it.

I was going to talk to you about the 2026 Camry.

So it's strictly hybrid now?

Well, it's been that way.

It came out all hybrid in 2024.

Okay.

And that's a good thing.

Yeah.

It would be new for me.

So that's kind of what I'm calling.

Yeah. I understand.

I notice it shows 46 miles to the gallon.

Does that include the hybrid part?

Oh, yeah.

And you realize for the size of that car, that's amazing fuel economy.

Tony, I get it.

New technology scares people a lot of the times, but this is new technology to Toyota.

They came out with the first hybrid 26 years ago and they have it perfected.

Other car companies copy what they're doing because hybrids have become the go-to for America.

Everybody now wants a hybrid.

A lot of people tried electric cars and it wasn't for them.

That's why there's so many electric cars on the market.

With low miles, they get rid of them real quick, everybody wants hybrids.

When you drive a Toyota hybrid, you will not know it's a hybrid.

You won't think anything about it.

You can look at the dash and you can tell when it's running on gas or when it's running on battery.

But by feel, you'd never suspect it was doing what it's doing, which is running on battery when it can

and then switching to gas when you get up to speeds where the battery won't handle it anymore.

So I'm going to tell you now, and I've said this on the air many times,

if I were getting a Toyota or a Lexus and the model that I wanted was offered in a hybrid,

I would get the hybrid without question because of the fuel economy and because you also get extra horsepower.

It's the way to go, my friend, have no fear.

Boy, it's been a really big news week.

I mean, I think you mentioned on the earlier show that you had the whole newsletter kind of put to bed earlier in the week.

And then we had the news later on the week that was 11th hour that we mentioned earlier about the stop start.

But earlier in the week, you learned about some news from Toyota and the Highlander where the 2027 is only going to be electric.

Nobody saw this coming.

Yeah, you even talked to one of your dealers there.

He didn't know either.

He didn't know.

In fact, he didn't know till I told him.

Wow.

I mean, it just blew me away when you got it.

When the rest of the industry, which was another article that I wrote that Detroit three should have listened was the title of it in yesterday's newsletter.

And I talked about the fact that they had lost the just the Detroit automakers that Ford GM.

Stalantis, they had written off $52 billion in the last month because they went too fast into electric vehicles.

Yeah.

And I told them this in 2017 and I've got it.

I've got proof of that that I told them in 2017, slow down.

Nobody listened.

Okay, fine.

Yeah.

So they're getting out.

They're going away from it.

And all these years while everybody else was headed deep into electrics, Toyota resisted.

Then Toyota now comes and takes one of their most popular SUVs and makes it all electric.

Yeah, it's crazy.

And I'm like, what in the world is going on?

Things are upside down.

So are they late to the game?

And they just said, well, we've already had this money invested in this whole thing.

Let's go ahead and do it.

Or is my guess they were too deep financially into it to just throw it away.

But I remember on the air questioning a few years ago when I reviewed the Toyota Grand Highlander.

And I made the comment to the audience at that time, why?

I don't know why Toyota is coming out with this SUV.

It's a great SUV.

I loved it.

I've had it one more time since then.

And it's terrific.

It's different, but yet it's much the same and almost the same size, just slightly bigger.

And I think now I understand because they were going to transition regular Highlander owners,

not just leave them hanging out to drive, they're going to transition them into the Grand Highlander.

It's one of their biggest selling cars.

Yeah, although Highlander sales have been off pretty dramatically since the Grand Highlander came out.

Well, there you go.

All right then.

So now all of a sudden it's starting to make sense to me.

Okay.

Well, I wonder if they're going to, I mean, you don't know yet because you just know the news,

but it'd be interesting to see what they do with it to set it apart from the herd.

Well, I think they'll, I think the Grand Highlander, both of them that I've had have been probably $5,000

more than the regular Highlander equipped the same.

So I think what they'll probably do, this is a guess.

Nobody knows what Toyota does is going to do and they keep things really tight.

They don't let the news get out like every other manufacturer does.

But I think they'll probably come with a lesser equipped Highlander so that through Highlander customers today

that don't want to go electric can have a transition vehicle in the Grand Highlander

that's very little more than what they paid, you know, over the past couple of years.

That's Toyota style.

That's what they do.

I call them the smartest car company in the world because I think they are the smartest

car company in the world.

And time may tell that this was a good decision, but we just have to wait and see.

Well, you should see this thing.

It is a drop dead gorgeous.

Oh, the pictures look fantastic.

Oh, this thing is beautiful.

Yeah.

Beautiful.

We don't know pricing yet, but we'll find out.

And Thomas is thinking about a new RAV4.

Hello, buddy.

Hello.

What can I do for you?

Well, I'm wondering what you can recommend about when do I actually start going into dealerships

and talking to them.

I understand that there's a real short supply right now.

Are you looking at the hybrid or are you looking at the regular RAV4?

Oh, the 2026 is only in hybrids, so I'm looking at that.

Okay.

You're looking at a 2026.

All right.

So yeah, they are short in supply.

They can't keep up with demand, which is a great problem if you're an auto manufacturer.

They're not too many cars out there these days that aren't overbuilt, much less one

that they can't build enough of.

And there's reasons for that.

The RAV4 is known as one of the longest lasting SUVs in America.

It's been the number one selling SUV here for 15 years.

Then you add the hybrid to it and you got an SUV that gets into the 40 mile per gallon range

and there's nothing else out there to compete with it right now.

Honda's trying with the CR-V and their new hybrid, but they haven't gotten there yet.

So we're going to see.

What are you driving currently, Thomas?

I'm one of the people that keeps cars forever.

So I've got a 2016 Sonata that I just put a new engine in that they paid 75% of that.

And I've got a 2012 Corolla.

Okay.

All right.

I'm looking for a little big.

Here's what people who are needing a RAV4 hybrid should do.

Because of their popularity, most people buy them in advance before they even get to the lots.

So you see a convoy truck on a Toyota dealer lot.

It's got eight hybrid RAV4s on there.

Odds are.

Everyone has already sold.

Now the good news is Toyota has the best distribution system in the industry.

So they build and allocate to the dealers based on their sale rate.

So if you get a good size dealer, they're going to be getting RAV4 hybrids in every single day

and they're going to be going out every single day.

So if you can decide what you want, which trim package, and the dealers can help you do this,

what colors you want, they can put your name on one that's already built and in transit.

Then when it gets there, they'll call you and say, hey Thomas, that RAV4's here.

Come look at it.

And then you make the buying decision.

And you know what?

I love the most about that.

There is no pressure whatsoever because if you don't buy it, they got somebody right behind you that will.

So you make you make a good solid decision without any pressure whatsoever.

What's going on?

Good morning.

Hi there.

I'm trying to determine which would be better for my wife.

BMW X5 or Lexus RX 350 and I know a 450 also hybrid.

Yep.

And if I look at the BMW X5, it has to be plug-in hybrid.

And how long do you think she will keep this car, Don?

I'd say eight to ten years.

Okay.

It's an easy decision for me to go with the Lexus.

There's just, I don't know that there's ever been a better SUV built than the Lexus

RX 350 and blows my mind why people continually buy them again and again and again.

But if you talk to any RX 350 buyer, somebody driving one right now, they're likely to tell

you this is their third one.

This is their fourth one.

This is their fifth one.

And it's because they're so good.

They're just so trouble-free.

And if it were me, I would get the Lexus and I would get the hybrid.

And that's, I mean, to me, that's just a real easy decision.

And believe me when I tell you, I like BMW products.

I think they're more exciting.

I own a BMW.

And I would still go with the Lexus if I were going to keep a car eight to ten years.

If I'm going to keep it three years, less than 100,000 miles, I'd probably go with the BMW.

But for me, if I'm keeping a car a long time, it's going to be a Lexus.

Okay.

I appreciate your comments and I'll take it in advice.
