I have been extremely pleased in the past week as the new incentives come out, which

I've always told you, and I told you recently, they will drop in January, and sure enough,

they did.

But it wasn't the drastic drop that I thought it was going to be, and I think maybe part

of that is the dealers are still kind of overloaded in inventory.

And so the factories, the only time they put incentives on is when the factory needs the

dealers to sell cars, so they reorder, and I think that's what we're seeing right now.

Our Toyota dealer on the Dallas Fort Worth Show earlier today had some specials for us,

which he and I go over those every week, and they were as good as December was.

I got the Ford incentives from Ford Motor Company early last week.

They're really good on their 2025 models.

Not a whole lot on 26s, but 2025s have got really good money on them.

I'm doing great.

Good to start the weekend off with you and to get this thing rolling.

Like you said earlier with the way that the incentives are really kind of held firm for

the most part.

It's just been such an unusual year.

I guess it's tough from your perspective, even though you do all the research and you

have all the experience for the crazier we had with the tariffs and with the EV situation

kind of going away this fall.

It's been really tough to even say, you know, how do you go and judge January because everything

has been so different and so weird the past five or six months.

It has.

I mean, the tariffs really changed everything and the manufacturers have had to adjust to

those and it's taken some time and they have adjusted to it.

So that's the good news is, you know, we did see some price increases with cars due to

the tariffs.

But then, you know, it wasn't like the mainstream media portrayed that it was going to be.

It wasn't nearly as much or as widespread as we thought it would be, you know.

And so that was good news.

You know, the average car price today is at around $49,000.

The average car payment is $750 a month, 20% of people that bought cars last year are

paying $1,000 a month or more.

So it's changed and that is why making a good car buying decision and dealing with a good

dealership is so important right now.

You know, I'm sort of a Kia person now because I have to tell you, I'd have had for the

past couple of years and really love what they do.

I guess the soul was a pretty popular vehicle.

I know it's sedans are not as popular just generally these days.

But I guess that was the one I thought that was a little unusual.

Well, they call it an SUV.

Do they?

Yeah, it's kind of like the Toyota Corolla Cross.

Yeah, you're not really an SUV, but it is.

They call it an SUV because they put bigger wheels on it.

But no, no big surprise that it was going away to me because they haven't changed it in so long.

You know, they just sat there and it kind of got stale.

Plus, the big thing is they fired the hamsters.

That's right.

What the hell?

Why would you fire the hamsters?

I know they were loveable little hamsters.

Everybody loved the hamsters.

Sure they did.

Let's talk to Brad and see how we can help him.

He's calling from Dallas, Fort Worth.

Brad, what can I do for you, sir?

Yeah, so my wife and I are known among our family and friends to drive the wheels off of cars.

And I've got a 2010 Dodge Ram.

It's a 1500 now.

My wife and my daughter both are into horses, so I'm looking to get the 2500.

I've got 350,000 miles on this truck and it has been the greatest vehicle I've ever owned.

And I used to own vehicles when I was younger.

I used to, you know, train them in, get a new one every couple years.

Sure.

And the real thing that I want to talk to you about is the fact that I cannot find one

of the 2500 Rams with the 6.4 liter engine.

I cannot find one with the rear end that gives it the real towing capacity I need.

The 410 rear end would increase the towing capacity by three or four thousand pounds,

which I don't really want, because I'm not ready for a diesel.

I don't know why I've got a mind block.

It's just a weird thing with me that I just, I can't imagine.

Yeah.

So what, what would you suggest possibly buy?

And I'm looking to buy a used truck just because we put so many miles and everything.

But I was looking at some, it's in 2024s.

And the, I mean, you literally get another two or three thousand pounds of towing

capacity with a 410 or 411 rear end.

Is it worth buying one with a 373 rear end and taking it to a transmission shop?

Or would you suggest?

Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

You don't want to, you don't want to start changing out the the rear end.

It's going to cost you way more than than than you.

What are you towing?

How big, how big a horse trailer is this?

Well, it's not, it's not a gooseneck or anything.

It's I'm still, I still got a bumper pull, but we would like to eventually get a gooseneck

trailer that would tow, you know, I mean, those, those trailers themselves, even if

you buy aluminum ones, they can weigh five to 10,000 pounds on their own.

And then you load three or four thousand pounds worth of horses in it.

And you're, you know, you're, you're already past your, your, your Hemi 2500 tow capacity.

You know what, I'm going to, I'm going to put you on hold.

We'll come back to you on the other side of the sprake.

What you want in a car versus what you get might take some advice.

Yes, I was and I didn't want to cut him off without helping him.

Brad, looking at the 6.4 Hemi with a 373 rear end and a four wheel drive.

You're talking about 15,500 pounds of towing.

OK, so if you were careful, if you were careful with the trailer and it may be slightly

higher than that, if you do eventually go to a gooseneck, but that's the bumper

pole, 15 five.

So if you've got three, two thousand pound horses and a 7500 pound trailer, you're

well within the limits of the towing.

So, you know, what I only recommend the four 10 in extreme circumstances and with

people who are going to Colorado are going to get into some really serious

mountains. And the reason for it is when you're not pulling that trailer and you

got a four 10 rear axle ratio, not only is the gas mileage going to be horrific,

you're going that engine is under a lot more strain even when you're not towing

because of that gear that rear end ratio.

It's going to be throwing higher RPMs up at 70 miles an hour, going down the

highway, not pulling something.

So I try to avoid the four 10 unless it's an extreme case.

And I don't think you've got an extreme case here.

No, I definitely wouldn't.

I mean, considering what's with some of the people that we ride horses with

have to tell me my mind, that's why I'm trying to just stick with gasoline.

I have to pay the diesel prices and diesel mechanics, believe it or not.

If you're not, I mean, I'm sure the dealerships charge the same per hour,

but diesel mechanics are in such high demand now that I've got some friends

that have their older trucks worked on and they just can't believe what they're

having to spend. Oh, no, no, no, no question.

On the diesel trucks, no question, no question about it.

So I don't have an issue with you sticking with gas.

That's fine.

But trying to find a four 10 rear end, even if you could, I don't think you're

there. I don't think it's a good idea.

Well, that's exactly why I called because I've never had even even when I had

sports cars and some of my friends put in aftermarket rear ends.

I never really had a car that had a rear end ratio like that.

So yeah, it's it's well, I appreciate that.

I appreciate classic Dodge Crescer Jeep Ram in Arlington is my local dealer.

And if you will talk to them, Adam Lancaster's the GM, there's a great guy.

He can be watching out for something that'll do the job for you.

I wouldn't go down to a three 55 and certainly not a

three 31, but if you can find the three 73, which will be the most common

you'll be good. I think you're going to be.

Hi, how are you? Good, buddy.

Good. They got a question specific, but it could be viewed more general.

OK, I was thinking about buying a model

as Tesla ideally at twenty twenty three.

So it's got the latest hardware.

Yeah. And I was waiting for the new year to roll over

so that the cars, you know, are one year, quote unquote, older.

Is that a good type of philosophy or does it not really matter?

Well, it I mean, one year is not going to make or break the thing

in a huge way.

The main thing you need to know is

used electric cars are on rock bottom right now.

And it's been that way now for six months.

They're bringing a fraction of how much they were brand new.

I'm I'm I'm seeing some crazy prices.

Now, Teslas in electrics hold their value better

than the other electric cars that I see out there by far.

And I think it's because they're they're more popular

and more people buy the Tesla.

So, you know, if you're stuck on Tesla, that's fine.

And you can get a deal on one right now.

You know, if you look at some of the other ones and there are some great ones out there.

Like, you know, that I saw Lucid sell at the auction this week.

And it was a fraction of what it was.

I mean, this is like a hundred and thirty thousand dollar car bringing

under fifty thousand dollars that's a year old.

So there's bargains out there.

You won't find nearly as many bargains on a Tesla as you will some of the other

electrics. And I'm going to tell you right now, I believe

that the best electric cars that have come out of any manufacturer in the past

three years has been Jero Motors.

They make a fantastic electric electric car.

So I would if you're going electric and I've got an electric myself that I love.

It's great. It's not my daily driver, but and I'm just being honest.

If it was, I probably wouldn't have it.

But I love the car.

I'd look and if you want to Tesla, get a Tesla.

They're they're they're cheap, but not as cheap as some of the others.

There's a lot to learn about buying or leasing your next truck or car.

And I mean, one's like I wanted, which was not brand new.

So I got a twenty twenty four titanium with ninety six hundred miles.

Oh, wow. Yeah, that's nice.

I still don't know how to do everything.

A car is smarter than I am.

But I the main point I want to make is that is the nicest man.

I left there feeling like he was my personal friend for 30 years.

So, Saul, how are you doing, pal?

What could I do for you?

I'm doing great.

Just a question.

I have a twenty nineteen Toyota Camry.

It's the two five liter, you know, the four cylinder.

Yeah.

It it hit just recently, you know, seven years old technically

and it just hit about forty five thousand miles, you know, three hundred.

So it has been fine.

My only and I do all the maintenance at Toyota.

These are chips, the old changes.

But my question is about the transmission fluid.

And it's going to come up to seven years.

It still has the original fluid.

It hasn't hit sixty thousand, which they say to change it.

Should I change it?

You know, I just go ahead and change it, even though it's at forty five

just because it's been pretty much seven years or and should it be a flush or a change?

You know, I'd wait till you get to sixty thousand miles.

It just doesn't seem like time, unlike motor oil, transmission fluid

doesn't wear due to time.

Pretty much you can count on the miles.

Now, I was thinking, you know, if you're at forty five and you're going to do it anyway,

but that's a fairly expensive

piece of maintenance.

And if you're ever going to do a flush, this is the time to do it.

When you're at around that sixty thousand mile mark, because after that,

I don't recommend it at all.

I don't ever recommend flushes past sixty thousand miles.

And the reason is simple.

They're high pressure and my opinion, the risk of of damaging seals and gaskets,

especially on a vehicle that seven, eight, nine years old,

to me is much greater than the reward of what a flush will do.

I like flushes, but just at sixty thousand or under.

So my advice to you would be not to change the fluid now.

But at sixty or close to it, do a flush, change the fluid.

And then from that point on, only do a change.

OK, all right. OK.

That's definitely better news to that.

It's more on the mallet and not like. Yes. Yes.

OK, yeah. OK, that's perfect.

Transmission fluid is very different than than oil is.

So I think I think you'd be just fine doing it at sixty thousand.

And then another sixty thousand if you have the car that long.

OK, after after the first sixty thousand is up, I do the flush.

And then the next sixty thousand, that should be the change.

Just a change. Yeah.

Yes, the change.

And this goes for like any vehicle, right?

Because my mom, my mom has a rap for twenty one rap for my dad has a twenty

twenty one fifty.

And so when they hit sixty, do a flush as well.

And then just after that, after that, just do a change.

Yep. OK, that's what I do.

Now, you can talk to five different people and you'll get five different answers.

But that's that's what I do with my own cars.

So and when I when I own dealerships, my people hated it because some people

would come in at seventy five, eighty thousand miles and say, I'd like to get

my transmission flushed, flushed, and I wouldn't let them do it.

And and they're like, hey, we're missing money here.

Well, you know what?

That's just life. That's the way it goes.

We're going to do it right or we're not going to do it at all.

And that's the way I ran my dealership.

So there you go.

So I appreciate it so much.

Well, Gary, good good morning to you.

Got a quick question.

I am a eight year owner of a Subaru out back

and have been absolutely pleased with it.

Sure. And it's got about seventy thousand miles.

And I know that we may be looking at trading it in soon.

We really enjoyed the carpet and we may go back out back at the same level.

But I'm curious as to the any advantage

could be found in the Volvo ninety or sixty over this outback.

And I'm really curious about the difference in those two costs.

Seems like to me it's at least fifteen thousand dollar difference.

It's probably more than that, to be honest with you,

because the Volvo's Volvo's have taken a hard hit with the tariffs.

And so they've we've seen some real

pretty significant price jumps in the Volvo and I like the Volvo's.

I will tell you this, you'll save a lot of money up front with the Subaru

and you'll save a lot of money down the road

because, in my opinion,

Volvo's are kind of quirky cars and at about sixty thousand miles,

you're going to end up spending money on them and they're not cheap to work on.

You pretty much got to use a dealership.

So, you know, for a lot of different reasons,

if if you were if you were one of those people who

told me that that you were, you know, a safety freak,

you're worried to death about getting hurt in a car,

you know, you talk about Volvo and safety and they've earned

that reputation as being super safe.

But I got to tell you something, I don't think there's anything any better

than a Subaru when it comes to safety with their eyesight system.

So if I were you, I would stick with the Subaru, if it were me making the decision,

save the money, save the trouble down the road.

Ask yourself, there's a lot of things that you need to go and look at a

When the balance is shifted, it's okay to let go.

Yeah, you can keep a car too long.

And I see people do that and to a fault, really.

Yeah, because you get, you get an older car,

average car on the road days, 12 years old.

Yeah, and it's still got some value until you have that catastrophic

failure, engine or transmission, serious problem.

Then you've got a boat anchor.

It's not worth nothing.

Yeah, and if you've got payments that, you know, there's much money

as you're putting in the car, it's as much as you're paying on a new payment.

It's probably time to think about getting rid of it

and getting a brand new car and not having that headache anymore.

Yeah, and, you know, getting in something safer with today's safety technology.

Yeah, absolutely.

So we I feel like we've been very lucky in buying some cars, used cars

for my wife and I and our older kids, and we're at that time again.

I got to my son is turning 16.

He's six, five, almost six, six, and it's time to give him a car here in February.

Yeah. So we've had good luck with Toyota, Beaverton Toyota,

Russ Humberson up here, you know, one on Craigslist.

We got lucky.

So I just saw Amazon Autos is just recently gotten into.

They want to be the kind of a premiere hub.

And I just want to what you think of that.

I've seen here, for example, used 20, 25 Chevrolet

tracks, four wheel drive LT.

It's got, you know, 24,000 miles.

It's $18,000.

So, you know, it's the challenges finding a used car that's a little miles.

Yeah.

And it's at Hertz of Portland.

OK, so it's a it's a Hertz rent a car.

That's correct. OK.

It seems like Amazon has got a few partnerships, one being her

that they work with.

Yeah, I know, Mark, they're they're working with the Hyundai dealers.

They're working with some four dealers on certified cars.

Look, Amazon has nothing to do

with anything other than they are being a lead provider.

You still got you.

You still have to go to the dealership to take delivery.

Amazon has no vetting process whatsoever.

They'll take any dealer's money.

And I love Amazon.

They come to my house every stinking day.

You've seen here.

And more than once, more than once normally.

But when it comes to cars, it's just like Costco.

They're charging the dealer.

The dealer is going to get their money from them.

And they're going to add that money onto the price of the car.

Now, I'm OK with all that.

As long as everybody knows the deal that they're getting paid to do it.

It and I have people say to me,

do you make money if I buy a car from one of your dealers?

No, I don't make a penny.

And it will always be that way because I can't.

I can't in good faith recommend a dealer if they're paying me.

And and that's the bottom line.

Be careful with former Hertz cars.

Get it checked out by an independent service.

You got to be careful because they do a lot of their own body repairs

and they don't report to the to the car faxes and the auto checks.

So be careful.

you're just throwing money away.

on how to get a brand new car.

I have these great stories to tell.

James was looking for a brand new 2025 Subaru Forester

and was ready to go to Subaru Orange Coast to get that going.

Flew in from Northern California to Southern California to buy this.

Yes. And apparently had some email confusion with them.

And Buddy did recount your December podcast rationale explaining why

you need to be patient with general sales managers during the end of the year

and end of December.

So he called them back instead of doing the email thing and was able

to go and get the price negotiated before he made the trip.

They flew in somebody from the dealership, picked them up at the airport

and on the drive over was going over all the stuff that he recorded

so we can go back and he can refer to it.

Says that he's watched it three times since, had a great experience.

Thanks for your helpful and fun way to buy a car.

Well, I, you know, I tried to tell everybody that.

They're busy at these dealerships, especially at the end of December.

Yeah. And, you know, if you're one of those people who want a lot of attention

and you want to take your time and you want to drive three or four different cars.

Man, January is the time that is your time of year.

So, you know, look, I'm an email guy.

You know that. Oh, I do. I do.

I hate talking on the phone, right?

But the truth is in a dealership, emails are last.

The people live in the showroom take priority.

The people on the phone take second priority and you get to the emails

after all the people who are on the phone and in person, you're done with that.

That's the last thing you do.

So sometimes you just got to make you got to do it the old fashioned way.
