Jerry Reynolds The Car Pro was in the auto industry for over 35 years, and in addition

to getting his sixth win from the Texas Auto Writers Association for Best Radio Show in

Texas, he's a member of the Texas Radio Hall of Fame, along with fellow members, Dan Rather

and George Carlin.

His co-host, Todd Chambliss, just became a member of Applebee's Hall of Fame for finishing

Well, yep, that's what we do, straight talk, honest answers, anything automotive except

mechanical questions.

How you doing, Pat?

I'm doing very well.

It's kind of a surprising January.

I think you talked about this before, where normally, I guess in years past, after the

incentives and the end of year push and everything, January, kind of a different animal where you've

got probably better opportunities to buy a used car because those prices kind of go down

because they had a whole glut of people trading in their cars, but the incentives are still

holding firm.

And you just mentioned, I think earlier in the day, that the used car prices going at

auction are still pretty high.

Yeah, they are.

This week was a shocker to me because everything, even used Teslas, were bringing over what's

called MMR, Mannheim Market Report.

That's kind of the guide.

And the dealers love to use that guide because it's real-time information.

Mannheim is so big, they got auctions all over the country.

And so they, every time a car sells at the auction, they put it into their system and

then dealers can go there and look and see what cars are selling for at the auction,

which helps them decide whether to buy them or not at the auction, right?

So when things are bringing under MMR, the market soft, when things are bringing more

than MMR, the market is very robust.

Typically in January, the market falls, always has, not this year.

The cars I saw this past Wednesday that I watched, everything was selling for big bucks.

Well, that is odd.

It is odd.

I don't know.

I don't know why.

I can't explain it.

But that's a good thing, because what that means now is if you, you know, just put it

off and put it off and said, oh, I'm just too busy or just want to enjoy the holidays

and you didn't get a chance to make that change, you still have sort of an opportunity

to do that now while it lasts.

If you have a trade in, yeah.

Yeah, most definitely.

No, absolutely.

And you might have been better off not doing it in December if you've got a trade in.

Now, that's one week at the auction.

I'll watch it again this coming week and see if that trend still holds,

because you do see you do see Spax at watching the auction.

You see Spax from time to time.

But I don't know if this was an anomaly or if this was a real deal.

But we'll see.

Let's talk to Wayne in Yorba, Linda, California.

Wayne, welcome.

What can I do for you?

Yes, Jerry, thank you, guys.

I have a twenty twenty three I.D.

four. The least thing is ending up soon.

I only use half of the mileage.

So what's the best way before I turn it in

to take advantage of the leftover?

There's the only thing you could do to take advantage of it is to buy it

and keep it when when you did the lease.

You did it based on the residual value that they assigned to it at that time.

Now, that's no more than a prediction of what it's going to be worth

at the end of the lease, right?

And that that number that number is set in stone.

So there's no negotiating it.

It's just either by it or you walk away from it.

If you buy it, it's probably going to be under

the residual values going to be if

this is complicated because and I apologize.

I'm trying to figure out how to explain this best, not just to you,

but to everybody else when you bought,

when you leased your electric vehicle,

nobody knew what was going to happen with the electric vehicle market.

We know used electric vehicle prices have plummeted over the past year.

So even though yours is lower mileage,

it's probably still not worth what the residual value is

that you'd have to pay for it if you wanted to purchase it.

Now, there's an easy way to figure out for sure what that is.

You need to know two numbers.

You need to know the value and you need to know the residual value.

So the value is going to be what the car is worth.

So if I were you, I would talk to the VW dealer that you leased it from

and ask them what the car is worth.

What would they write a check for

to purchase that vehicle?

If that number that they give you is under the residual value,

then you're just going to walk away and start over with something else.

If you love the car and you want to buy it,

even though it's probably more than the market value is,

that's OK, you know, the car, you know, it hadn't been wrecked.

You could do that.

But if you want to get out of the car,

then your your best bet, I guarantee you, is to just walk away from it.

OK, yeah, it's kind of the rain is limited.

But look, that's that's the beauty part of leasing.

And I've told listeners on this show now for a long time.

If you're going to get an electric car, lease it.

Don't buy it.

Because I saw a lot of people take a bath that bought electrics.

And I don't care what brand the people who bought the early cybertrucks.

They lost half their value in under a year.

So they're the only way to protect yourself from that is to lease.

And you did the smart thing.

Now you got to figure out, do I love this?

Do I want to do it?

Do I want to get another lease car?

If you go back with a Volkswagen, there may be some incentive

from the factory for people coming out of Volkswagen leases into another one.

And that might be something to talk to the dealer about as well.

What can you do for me?

Putting me into another lease and then go from there

and see where it leads you.

I'm going to predict that unless you decide you really want to buy that car,

that you'll walk away from it when you really look at the numbers.

So be careful.

Well, at one point, Tesla was the global EV crown.

Is that me doing that, by the way?

No, that's me. That was me.

OK, just want to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong over here for for a number

of years, Tesla was like the global leader as far as EV sales.

But for the last two years, they've been number two in the world.

And I've heard of this company before.

I think you've talked about them on the show before Chinese automaker.

B, Y, D, number one in the world at EV sales.

How come?

Well, I mean, you are aware because, obviously, you know,

all the automotive stuff, you keep up with it and you study it.

But how come it's not like part of the vernacular here?

Because they they don't sell them here.

So you can't even buy them here.

You can't buy them here.

That's that. But that was those are world wide numbers.

Yeah. So you talk in China, I'm sure it's probably

how many people there you probably percentage wise, probably drive in EV.

Well, yeah, larger than you would expect out of thing.

And they work for nothing.

So they they can build a twenty thousand dollar EV.

Yeah. Now, that doesn't mean it's a good one.

It just means it's cheap.

The price is right. It's it's electric.

And what are you going to do?

Hey, Jerry. Hi, Todd.

And thanks for being there.

Well, thank you for calling, buddy.

What can I help you with?

Well, I'm looking at buying a midsize SUV.

I'm getting rid of my EV.

I want to spend about fifty, fifty five thousand dollars.

I want something that's going to be really comfortable.

A hybrid is great.

And I'm going to be using it for some road trips.

What what's your thought and recommendation?

You know, at that price range, I would probably tell you to look at

a Hyundai Santa Fe or maybe even a Hyundai Telluride.

I'm sorry, a Hyundai Palisade,

which is the sister, which is the sister to the Telluride.

They're very they're very comfortable on the road.

It's a little bigger than midsize.

It's got a third row seat and it's got some cargo area in behind.

But typically what most people do with both those,

if they don't need the third row seat,

is just fold them into the floor and leave the seats down.

So you got extra cargo area.

What kind of EV do you have right now?

I have a Tesla.

OK, I think.

At fifty five grand, you're in.

You're in range of a Lexus in X,

which is going to give you more, more luxury than than the than the

Hyundai will, but it's it's relatively small, too.

You might look at a certified Lexus RX.

They're they they're great out on the highway.

They're fantastic.

And it's hard.

It's hard to imagine from just a few years ago, Mickey.

You'd think fifty five thousand dollars would buy you buy you more

than what I'm talking about here, but I'm just talking about reality.

I mean, I mean, it's reality.

Yeah. And that's where we are today.

So, you know, you you might want to look.

Certified pre-owned to get something a little nicer.

If if you're in, you know, if you're going to be driving on the highway a lot,

I think for me, at least quietness is one of the one of the big things.

And and believe it or not, Hyundai does a good job with their interior

quietness as of a few years ago.

But Lexus is great.

I think it would.

I think a certified RX, either a hybrid or plug-in hybrid will probably fit

in your price range and it'll come with a nice long warranty.

So I'd look at those.

I'd start there and I got good dealers for all those at my website.

OK, yeah, because I have a Lexus, a 2013, yes, 300 hybrid that's been amazing.

You know, then you know what I'm talking about.

You know how good they are.

And and that's what I that's what I try to stress to people.

I think I think personally, I think the Hyundai Kia hybrids are going to be

excellent as time goes on.

But the truth is, I don't know.

They haven't been out as long here.

Honda, good car company as they are.

They came out with hybrids and they were horrible Subaru.

The first the first hybrid that I tested,

I thought was awful.

It's probably the worst car review I've ever I've ever written.

And I love Subaru, but their hybrids were terrible.

So there you go.

If you're going to get a hybrid, it would be a Toyota or Lexus if it were me.

So at fifty five grand, you're probably going to need to go certified

used in something that's really nice.

What can I do for you?

Well, hello, Jerry.

I'm looking to get a new car right now.

I have a little Honda fit that's got two hundred and sixty thousand miles on it.

So I'm looking for something that's going to be as reliable and have such longevity as that.

And I'm a little concerned that the Nissan's

is going to be as reliable and as longevity as that.

Or a little cheaper car to go with, but I know they had some issues

where their reliability and longevity were not so good.

And then the other things I've kind of been considering were a monster three,

a Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic.

But price is very important to me.

Well, the Nissan's probably going to be the way to go.

They've got the best incentives.

And to your concern about quality for the past five years,

they've been really good cars and there were issues with transmissions before that.

To the point that I was very, very hesitant to recommend a Nissan.

But they've got that solved and they're making some really good cars.

They're, you know, if as long as you keep a car,

resale value isn't an issue, but that that is a that is still a Nissan concern

that I have is the resale value is not good.

But after five years, that's out the window anyway.

So if you can get a better upfront price and get a good car,

which I think you can easily do with a Nissan, I'd probably go with it.

And look, there's nothing wrong with the other cars that you listed.

They're great cars. I'm a big fan of Mazda.

I love what they do. I love the way they drive, but they're pricey.

And and you get you get the same thing with the Toyota and the Honda.

They're pricier.

But they're good cars.

But for you, very conscious of price up front and not having any concerns

about warrant reliability, I don't have any at this point.

Then I would I would tell you to look at Nissan, look at it hard.

I think I think that's probably the best bet for you right this minute.

I've got Crest Nissan in Dallas, actually in Frisco.

And the newsletter has an interesting story about odometer rollbacks.

And you mentioned that earlier in the show talking about the fact

that one point digital odometers were once considered like a safeguard,

but then they found a way around those and were able to go and roll those back.

They always do.

Yeah, folks who are up to no good have always found a way.

Apparently over 2.4 million vehicles are suspected of having rolled back odometers.

That's kind of a sobering number, isn't it?

Yeah, it is.

And, you know, I don't I don't know that people understand

the real risk of buying a car that had the odometer rolls back is,

you know, yeah, you're not buying the car.

You're not buying a car with the mileage that you thought.

So it's it's likely more worn than you anticipate.

Right. But the bigger deal is the value.

When when it's finally disclosed that there's an odometer rollback,

the value of the car plummets.

It might as well have been totaled and put back together.

So you pay the premium price for what you thought were less miles.

And then you find out the truth is you gave way too much money for it

because of the deception.

It's a it's a losing proposition all the way around.

Yeah, let's talk to John in the woodlands.

John, welcome. What can I do for you, sir?

You helped me once before with the toy with the Honda SUV.

Yeah, looking for a looking for a Toyota Tacoma.

That's the smaller pickup truck, right?

Yeah, that's there.

I mean, it's it's smaller than a Tundra.

It's still a midsize truck, in my opinion.

But it's it's the smallest one they have.

OK, well, who's the dealership in the Houston area?

Well, I've got a bunch, but from the woodlands.

Oh, I don't care.

Well, go to Fred.

Go to Fred has in spring.

And talk to Johnny Smith.

Johnny Smith, you'll love him.

He's a great guy.

He's he is so much fun.

OK, and Fred has is the number one Toyota dealer in Texas.

They sold. Oh, wow.

They sold over a thousand new Toyotas last month, which

nobody's done that anywhere in the country in years.

Well, big dealership, but they got a great service department.

Johnny Smith is fantastic to my listeners.

And I promise you, he'll make you the best deal anywhere in the Houston area.

Let me ask you this on a Tacoma, are there any specific

options that you would say that would be worthwhile getting

other than whatever comes with it?

No, not really.

Tacoma has just been a great truck for all these years.

It's I've told the story here before, but I got one listener.

Actually, was Austin listener that put a million miles on his Tacoma

without any. Rebuilds of the engine or transmission.

Now, he he did his maintenance and he did it right.

And that's what you got to do with any car.

But yeah, Tacoma is is if there's a complaint on Tacoma that I hear

from listeners, it's got a pretty stiff ride.

But other than that, it's it's it's an exceptional truck, no problems.

OK, by the way, I drive the two thousand one behind the Civic.

I've got almost six hundred thousand miles down at the original engine.

Wow. Wow. Yeah. That's awesome.

Yeah. Well, if you do the maintenance, you know, that's right.

That's that's that's the key.

Hey, how you doing? Good, buddy.

What's up?

I just wanted to clarify.

I heard heard a few different things about the differences between

a you know, just a used car and a certified used car

and whether or not the price points are worth the difference.

OK, that's a fair question.

And I I I'm a big proponent of certified used.

And part of it is the warranty that comes with a certified car.

It's always a good long warranty, which you're not going to get on a regular

or used car unless you purchase an extended warranty.

So yeah, you're going to pay more for a certified car.

But you're also going to get that warranty,

which means you don't need to buy an extended warranty. Right.

So it really kind of washes out.

But for me, the big thing is the process

that the car goes through to become a certified car.

It's rigid.

The dealer has to do a lot of different things and will they they have to check

one hundred and fifty or one hundred and sixty different things depending on the car.

And I know you're looking at a Bronco Sport.

So I wrote the original.

Certified process for Ford Motor Company when I was a Ford dealer.

And they still use it today.

They've they've tweaked it.

They've tweaked it some, but it's still the one that I did.

I traveled all over the country talking to car dealers about, you know,

what they wanted to see.

And I talked to people who were in the market about what they wanted

certified for me.

If I'm going used, it's going to be certified.

Now, bear in mind, there's a difference between

factory certified and certified.

Right. Some dealers use car dealers, particularly car max is one of them.

They like they like to call their cars certified cars.

Well, they're car max certified.

They're not factory certified.

OK, and I want a factory certified car because of the process that that car goes through.

You're going to get so going into.

Yeah, going into and knowing that, you know, straight from the horse's mouth,

who who wrote a certified plan, which is fantastic for Ford.

That I've heard with certified,

do they do they check it to the extent that they that they

guarantee that it was not an accident?

Not always, not always.

It can it cannot have been in a serious accident.

And and that means frame damage

or airbag deployment or something like that.

That will never pass certification.

But if it was minor damage, if it was a fender bender,

it's hard to find a used car that hadn't been in a fender bender in Texas.

So you can rest assured that it's not serious damage,

but there could have been damage.

No one wants to go to multiple dealerships just hoping for an honest deal.

they're bringing back the power wagon and the TRX,

Yeah, well, they've never had the power wagon with the diesel before.

Good afternoon.

I should say to you and Todd.

Well, thank you.

I'm a girl.

You're welcome.

I'm a grandmother looking to buy a car for my granddaughter, and she is looking

at the 350 F sport Lexus.

The the RX or the NX.

About it's RWD.

I.S. 350 F sport.

OK, so I assume it's the RX.

That's a problem.

Yeah, yeah, it's how much I know.

Don't know. That's OK.

That's their midsize SUV.

OK, anyway, I am looking in a thirty thousand dollar price range

and I see there's a twenty twenty two to twenty twenty three.

And I'm wondering which year was a better year.

And so far, she's twenty four.

So I, you know, I'm going to be responsible for repairs and everything.

So I thought if I should hit a certain year, that's better than another year.

No, there's not.

And there's never been a bad year with that vehicle.

That's OK.

I refer to the Lexus RX often as the best SUV ever made.

OK, OK. All right.

So it doesn't matter that twenty two or twenty three.

No, no, it does not.

The thing that matters, the thing that matters the most is the history report on it.

You want to make sure you want to make sure that hadn't been in a in a serious rack

or that the odometer hadn't been rolled back or even more likely in the Houston area.

It hadn't been in a flood.

That's the things you want to.

That's the things you want to watch out for.

I personally use auto check auto check dot com.

I have found over the years for it that it is way more reliable than car facts.

And it's a little cheaper, too.

It's about five bucks cheaper than a car facts.

But that wouldn't matter.

The main thing is you want reliable information.

And I find that auto check is much more reliable.

And this is a silly question.

But I see so many because I've been looking online that that are not certified.

And I just heard your other telephone conversation and I should definitely get a certified.

You should do a dealer and do that.

Should not I think so.

I do.

I and one, you know, the warranty is a big deal, especially when you're buying used.

And yeah, the Lexus certified program is exceptional.

They've got they've got a warranty that's unlimited mileage, believe it or not.

Well, that just tells you how good they think their cars are.

And that's because they are.

So, yeah, I've got I've got a great dealer.

If you want to check in Clare Lake, Lexus of Clare Lake,

there's a gentleman there named Fred Forsey.

Fred's been with me a long, long time.

Really good guy.

You'll love him to death.

And he would help.

He would help walk her through.

You know, this is going to be our first major car purchase.

Thank you. I just want to make a decision to get

upgrading from like a coma to a full size.

What can you tell me about the Chevy that they have before engine

in the color in the Silverado?

Yeah, they've been good so far.

Now we the history is fairly limited.

But I can tell you the gas mileage is great.

And so far they've been very, very good engines.

I was a little skeptical of them at first,

but slowly, but surely I'm gaining confidence in them.

I think I think it's probably OK.

I can tell you this, I've driven one.

It's got plenty of power, if that's your concern.

It's OK from that standpoint.

But you're saying it just doesn't have the history that the ACA will use?

No, it doesn't.

Or, you know, the five three that Chevy's had for so many years,

which has been just such a great engine.

You know, if you're doing it,

if you're going to keep the truck a long, long time,

I think I'd go with the five three.

But if if you're really concerned about fuel economy,

then I'd roll the dice on that four cylinder.

I think it's going to be OK.

OK.

And what about if I wanted to stay with the midsize, look at the Colorado.

Yeah, Colorado, Oregonian, Colorado is cheaper.

And it's a nice truck.

The Ford Ranger is a nice truck.

You know, either one.

But if you want, if you want to go drive one of those shivvies,

go over to and Sarah Winton, Chevrolet and talk to Darrell Dixon.

He's the general manager there.

He's a dear, dear friend of mine and one of the nicest people

you'll ever meet in your life.

He is just he's he's a prince of a guy.

Talk to him, drive the drive the Silverado and the Colorado.

See which one you like the most.
