I guess used to be conventional wisdom that you didn't because you were looking to make sure

they got all the issues worked out but apparently the article shed some different light now.

Yeah. I mean if you look at the testing that's done with new cars and as big a curse as it is,

you can thank the internet for this because if a vehicle comes out and it gets just slammed on

the internet, that car is going to die. Yeah. You can count on it. So that's changed all the

testing procedures and it's changed automakers rushing cars to market like they used to.

So look, I bought numerous first year cars. It doesn't scare me a bit. So that was the thing

that was clicked on first. The North American car truck and utility winners of the year was the

second most quick clicked on thing and then we had a momentous event. We did up until this morning

I'm getting ahead of you. Yeah. Number three on the list of most clicked items. Yeah. Todd's video

of the week. The first time. That'd be a first. But with all, we've got I think 155,000 newsletter

o'clock last night. That's what the cutoff time was. Then at nine o'clock this morning,

Hi, Jerry. Thank you for taking my call. I appreciate all you help us with. It's a pleasure.

To you for years. It looks like my 2018 Q50 is going to be

totaled. It has extensive water damage. Oh no. So all of a sudden, I have to get a new car.

I've always kept my cars for a long time and I haven't figured out or I have no idea what I

really want to get because I don't know everything that's out there. There's so many choices.

I'm in my early 70s. I'll probably have it for 20 years, maybe longer. I've only been driving

since I retired. I drove 1,500 miles last year and 1,300 a year before. So I don't need

the lot of... I mean, I don't care if the mileage initially, if I end up getting a used car, if it's

got higher mileage because I'm not going to be using it much anyway. And the warranty's always

run out because I drive them a lot longer. You run out on time before miles, by far.

So the thing is, what I like is I like sport suspension. I like to feel the road. I like to

be comfortable. My 2003 Passat was... I really liked except the get up and go was a little too slow.

But other than that, it was a really nice car. I liked having the sunroof. I ended up buying

the one at the top of the line because it's the only one that had the sunroof.

And I like a lot of the bells and whistles, the heated seats, especially I miss, and

the leather interior. And it had a really roomy trunk. The Q50's trunk is probably 40% smaller,

which is frustrating. And I like a lot of leg room. I like the trunk space.

I want it to be soundproof. I'm looking at all wheels.

a couple that I would tell you to look at. Look at the Genesis G80 and see what you think about that.

Yeah. Hello. Thanks for taking my call. You bet. I'm trying to advise my son. I thought maybe

you could help me advise him. So he's got a 2012 Rav4 with, I don't know, about 140-150,000 miles on

it. And it was recently damaged. Not important how, but there's about $6,700 of body damage down

the whole driver's side. It's somebody else that'll be getting the money for. And so the question is,

and he needs a reliable car with at least two car seats in there too. And would you advise getting

that car repaired or trading in as is plus $6,700 for something used? Does he not have insurance

on it? He does. I mean, the other party's going to pay for it. So it would get fixed and, you know,

is it better to just fix it or take the money and the car as is and turn it in?

I'll see what you're saying. Okay. Yeah. You know, I could make the case either way.

The one thing that you said that would make me lean toward telling him to trade it is

two car seats in it. And the advances that have been made in safety since his was new

13 years ago, 14 years ago. So, you know, if a dealer can fix a car body-wise or mechanical-wise

much cheaper than, you know, you're going to pay going out into the open market.

So, you know, one side of me says, all right, there's still probably 50,000 miles of life

left in that 2012 if he's done the maintenance. But the other side of me says, boy, I'd like to see

those two kids that are in those car seats in a safer car. So that's the conundrum. And if it's

at all possible, I'd tell him to trade and get something with the newer safety. Even if he goes

used, say, moves up to a 2018 or 2019, if he could get a hybrid, that would be even better.

The RAV4 Hybrid is just an outstanding SUV. And trade it in, put the money down from the

damage and trade it in as is. You have any idea what a fair trade, it's not obviously not in

great shape. It's got $6,700 worth of body damage. Yeah, you know, it's hard to say. I would,

I would have guessed it would have been worth somewhere around 10 grand before the wreck.

So if you can get three or four forward as it is, as it is without doing anything and then put the

rest of the money down, he's probably going to be in good shape. And I've got some, I've got some

really terrific Toyota dealers in the Houston area. I'm proud of every one of them. And they're at my

website. So send him there, but educating on how to use my process. If he's not a show listener,

I run into this regularly. People tell their kids, oh, just go to this website. Well, they don't

know, they don't listen to the show. They don't know that the talking to the person at my website

is critical. That's a big piece of the puzzle. And an emailing through my website. So you get

You know, I've got Fred Haas Toyota in spring. I don't know how far that way that far away that is.

They're the biggest Toyota dealer in Texas. And they take a lot of these cars in on trade.

So if he goes used, they'll probably have the best selection, but I've got, I've got three or four

taking my call Jerry you bet buddy I I'm driving the Ford Ranger at 2020 I've

got about 168,000 miles on it I want to replace it and I thought I wanted a

2026 Ford Ranger and I started shopping back in September and they didn't have

any and as of about a week ago or they're about nobody's got a 2026 well they

opened the order banks on those I know for a fact in late October and they

probably I would guess they probably got into the Christmas break area in

production I'm gonna guess and this is a guess but from remembering how Ford does

things when I was in the Ford business I would imagine they'll start to hit about

now if they haven't already what what I don't I don't know if any any changes to

the amazing thing is that the Canyon is out there the Colorado is out there but

I don't see any Ford Rangers I mean there's some 2025s out there but yeah this

might this might be my last vehicle so I kind of wanted what I wanted but sure I

just saying well did they have a problem with chips and they have a problem with

and they all the tariffs or and yet General Motors has turned out their

yeah and you know nowadays it's not it's just not like it used to be where all

the new cars came out in September they stagger them all through the year now

I'm gonna guess that they probably they opened the order banks dealers dropped

their orders as time went on they got into that break and they came back

building cars the first week of this month and they're probably in transit now

talk to one of my Ford dealers you can talk to to Tom Ball or Planet Ford

Shambles along for the ride to in this week's newsletter one of the most

clicked items has to do with the new way the some of these EVs and upper price

vehicles have the door handles you've seen them where they're flush and they're

electronic know what happens if there's a failure with the electric system going

to that particular door handle and you maybe you can't get out maybe they're

trying to get you out with emergency personnel and they can't do it so with

that there is actually a bill being introduced into the US house that would

require automakers to equip sorry equip all new vehicles with accessible power

independent manual door releases I think that's probably a good idea I don't see

any reason why not yeah I'm surprised that it's taken this long to kind of get

to this point though I mean I've heard of stories and you were recounting some

earlier on the the Dallas show there was an older gentleman that was in a

Corvette Corvette yeah and his battery died in his car and he couldn't get out

he didn't know where the Corvettes have always had an emergency handle to pull

yeah but you gotta know where it is it's not it's not obvious no it doesn't it's

it's not like on a plane where you know you got the door with the big handle

right right it's kind of hard to find but he died in his car in in the heat

because he couldn't get out of it and he didn't have a cell phone with him oh my

gosh horrible what a horrible feeling a little way to go yeah goodness so that's

probably long long overdue to get that yeah so we'll see how that goes next

series on is your car spying on you oh yeah and that's still up at the website

spying on you how to what to do to stop it that's probably a good thing there's

some folks who I can't speak for everybody who would probably say but is

it going to be really inconvenient a lot of my convenience is going to be taken

away with taking that privacy out well we know the privacy back in I should say

we know from my series that I did on this subject that your information on how

you drive and where you go get sold to an insurance to the insurance companies

yeah we've heard that for a while and it's true yeah and and they're gonna

base your rates on that so look there's no privacy anymore no your your

television your phone you just said you just said this week there was a article

about the television spying on you know yeah it is and it's crazy it is it's not

just that it's taking note every three seconds or so of not only what you're

watching but it's it knows what you're doing online while you're watching TV so

if you see a commercial and you go check it out online your hot prospect for

whatever's on that commercial and you're gonna start getting bombarded all

kinds of ads in your newsfeed yes on your social media yeah big brother's

watching something's wrong here yeah Chuck in Hillsborough Oregon Chuck

welcome and how can I help you sir well I am the owner of two medium high

mileage Toyota Highlander hybrids both around 175,000 and I'm looking to

replace at least one of them so that I don't get wrapped around the axle with

two high mileage cars when they start to go away that's a good good plan and one

of them is a factory tow package 2007 that I used to tow a 3500 pound boat so

if I were to replace that one I think I would go with a 2022 Highlander with a

factory tow package that can handle that weight yeah and the other one I would

probably replace with a RAV4 and so I'm starting to look I'm wondering should I

look at one over the other I've been told by a service person that I trust

that the 2021s were not as good as the 2022s which have shown to be pretty

reliable and I'm wondering if there's some other kind of vehicle that I should

look at I love my Highlanders they are great cars to drive and and the the

tow Highlander does extremely well with my boat yeah and Toyota tell me

Toyota's done a great job with their hybrids their pickups in their SUVs and

the fact that they not only get better fuel economy but but they've got more

horsepower and and that's a pretty rare combination your two Highlander hybrids

are both of them on the original but a hybrid battery yes wow that's just

amazing and people's people think I overly favor Toyota hybrids but here you

are with two of them 0607 coming up on 200,000 miles on the original hybrid

battery so for you for you doubters in the audience that's why that's a perfect

example you know I honest to goodness and I monitor this stuff really closely I

didn't see any difference between 2021 and 2022 in the Highlander it's it's got

such a great history going back to the very beginning of when Highlanders came

out I wouldn't I wouldn't concern myself with the year I'd be more concerned

with miles if you go with the RAV4 just know it's been bulletproof as well but

of course it's not going to do the towing that you need you're going to need to

replace one of those and I'd replace I'd replace one of the Highlanders with a

newer Highlander hybrid stay with the hybrid and I'd look for something that's

you know got under 50,000 miles how many miles a year are you adding on to a car

every year only about 12 to 13,000 and less than that on the one with the tow

package I I don't use it that often to tow okay then you could if you bought one

with 50 or 60,000 miles you'd have years and years in front of you without any

issues whatsoever so I would I would go that way I would replace the one that

you tow with because it's it's had more strain than the other one and I'd

replace it with another Highlander hybrid I mean there's no reason to get

away from Toyota hybrids with the luck that you've had with yours and us

knowing how well they are how well they they go and how far they go 225 to 250,000

miles is normal so I don't think you got to be in a big rush to do this but I'd

start looking you know you don't want to have to put a hybrid battery in that

07 that you've got that's the tow vehicle so I'd replace it that's the way I'd

handle it I appreciate the car good luck to you my friends

to me it's always interesting to read about some of these states that have

these laws that well they just don't really make a whole lot of sense to me

they probably came from a good source but for example in the newsletter this

week in the quickshifts there is apparently a story about the new car

sent air fresheners can get you a ticket is what it says basically if you've got

like the fuzzy pine tree swinging from your rear view that could be something

where you could get written up for that is apparently illegal because they say

it can obstruct your view yeah and it's like that little thing right there it's

not going to obstruct my view but sometimes folks just go and something

happens and they make a law because you know somebody had some free time but

nonetheless that that was in the newsletter also the other story that we

talked about earlier on the adela show is a waymo apparently more issues coming

up for waymo apparently there's a flaw in the whole system for waymos when you

take a waymo taxi the robo taxi if you leave the door open it renders it pretty

much like a boat anchor it's helpless and so now they're having to go and pay

people to go back to these cars when they can't move and do anything cuz the

doors left open pay them like 20 bucks to have them go and close the door just

so the waymo can operate again otherwise the cars just gonna be sitting

there wherever somebody got out of it which could be in the middle of the road

it could be it's crazy there are more issues about those waymos than we

probably thought initially right I'm thankful for them they they keep my

quick shifts column going yeah full of stories I mean they're there they're

them right now I'm kind of wanting to get your idea in regards to the Chevy

Traverse the RS model okay the teller ride the teller ride the prestige or top

of the line yep the CX 90 Mazda in the Palisades okay I'm surprised you didn't

have a Toyota in there with the good luck you've had with Toyota and Lexus

I was the only reason the only reason I didn't jury is because I don't really

look like to the design and the look on the exterior and I think some of the

technology is still a little bit behind compared to some of the other ones so

I'm a reason why I did it just kind of reminded me about your right about a

family parent car Toyota has Toyota has up the game the last Toyota grand

Highlander that I had it was over the Christmas holidays and they really

stepped it up on their electronics but I get where you come from and look

there's not a bad one on your list there you know I I think the most

enjoyable of your list is probably the Traverse RS I love that thing when I

had it but the best buy is probably going to be the telluride and especially

if you could if you go with a 2025 while they're closing those out because the

2026 is just about to hit I just had the pricing in the newsletter just last

week they're about to hit so I'd look between the Chevy and the Kia and I've

got great dealers for both those if you're buying your first trucker SUV let
