The Nissan Pathfinder is a family SUV made for carrying people and gear. This ad is saying the newest one is built for trips and everyday family life, with more modern features inside.
A V6 is an engine with six cylinders. It’s commonly used in SUVs because it provides plenty of power without being as large or complex as bigger engines.
Captain’s chairs are separate seats in the second row, not one big bench. They’re usually more comfortable and make it easier to get to the back seats.
Stellantis is the large automaker formed from the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and PSA. The host mentions a “Stellantis media person,” tying the lease promotion and model updates to the company’s marketing/incentive efforts.
This is just the market for used cars—how expensive they are and how easy they are to find. If prices are “sky high,” your current car may be worth more at trade-in, but the next used car will also cost more.
The Toyota RAV4 is a compact SUV that’s designed for everyday family driving. It’s often mentioned because it’s considered dependable and good for safety. People also talk about it in terms of how well it holds up over time.
The Hyundai Santa Fe is a mid-size SUV that can still have a third row. In this conversation, it’s described as a step down from the Palisade in how much space you get.
He’s considering keeping it as a backup car that he doesn’t drive much. That can be nice for convenience, but it can also cost money to keep insured and maintained.
Concept
emotional attachment vs financial decision
The host asks whether Paul has an emotional attachment to the vehicle, which affects whether he keeps it or sells it. In car decisions, sentiment can outweigh pure economics, especially when the car is tied to a person’s memory.
“Top dollar” refers to maximizing the sale price you receive for your vehicle. In this context, the host contrasts waiting a couple of weeks for the right retail buyer versus taking quick cash that usually costs you money.
They’re talking about internet for your house that uses 5G cell towers. Instead of running cable or fiber, it connects over the wireless network, and they’re saying it’s very fast and has a deal on price.
An extended warranty is extra protection you buy after the car’s original warranty expires. It can help pay for repairs later, depending on what’s covered.
A trade-in is when you turn in your current car to help pay for a new one. It only makes sense if the value you get is good compared to what you’d pay overall.
A lease is like renting a car for a few years with monthly payments. At the end, you usually return it (or sometimes buy it), depending on the contract.
EVs usually have simpler mechanical systems than gas cars. The big things people worry about are how far they can go and whether the battery will last.

And
Welcome back to the car pros show
It's the show with jerry wendell's is where he's the car pro and
I'm the road master or the co-host or the other guy Todd. Whatever you want to call me
I was your co-host earlier
We had a friend of mine text in to respond to something you said and they said to oh your co-host there
And i'm like well, it doesn't work that way. I'm i think it was about the song was it
It was about no your transparency about dealerships and how that story which uh, you know what?
We're talking about that right now. Let's talk about that. Okay
You uh, we're talking to a caller and they were trying to figure out their situation and they had gone to a dealership where
They weren't treated right. They didn't go to one of yours
And you kind of later on that you you you peel back the curtain
And you kind of showed everybody what maybe some car dealers don't want everybody to know and that uh, there's there's a way for
Because I think the person was going to pay cash and you said, you know financing car dealers
Actually, they make a little money on the financing. They don't make it from a cash transaction. That's right
His question was after we got through a bunch of other stuff was can I save any money paying cash?
No, you can't dealers don't care how you pay for a car because he was plucking a lot of money down on at least deal
I think yeah, and I was another mistake. It was it was about to make some classic mistakes
He was at a bad dealership dealership told him. Oh, you don't want to lease a Toyota. You want to buy it? Well
You know what?
If you're gonna lease something and you're not a high mileage driver
Nothing that leases better than a Toyota or a Lexus. Oh, sure
So this these people were just lying to him all the way around
and and
So his question was do
Can I save some money for pay cash? No, you can't dealers don't care that you're not impressed with your cash
They they you know tells a long story about how when I owned dealerships
If we were on a really close deal, we're at that point in the deal where
The customer is about to leave without buying a car. I wanted to know some things
Are they gonna finance with us because if they're gonna finance with us, we're gonna make money
On financing and maybe they'll buy an extended warranty
Where do they live? Are they neighbors of ours? If they live in our neighborhood, they need to buy their car for me
So they can service the car when it needs it. Yeah, and and they can tell all their friends exactly
And and so we we we got into those kind of things. It was an interesting call
And there there's some people who are like
I'm probably not that many but if you say well the dealership there's making money off of you
Well, they're a business. They have to make money. I mean, that's the way businesses run
But you want everybody to walk away from the deal happy where the you got a good you got a good deal in your car
the dealership's making some money
And there is no anxiety in the situation profit is not a dirty word
You want them you want anybody you do business with you want them to make a profit because you want them to be there
In case there's a problem. You you don't want a dealer to make money, but you want that loan car, don't you? Yes
That's that's the kind of things you got to think about now. You don't want to make an
You know I said in the earlier show you don't want to buy a car from a guy
Come back the next week and he's got a brand new shiny Rolex
On his building a pool out back in his house. Yeah. Oh, he's not here today. He's on a two week cruise
Thanks to you. Yes. No, you don't want that. You just want a fair deal. That's right
And let's go to the phones and we'll talk to don in sugarland, texas in the houston area don
Hey, buddy. What's happening?
I got a print that's got a uh 2024 rdx
And uh, you know things got so much bells and whistles don't even use the stuff anyway, but anyway, she loved it bought it
Uh, I told her she'd have gotten that excited. Uh, thanks. Got only 9 000 on it. Uh, I was
Saying you should have got a hybrid
Uh, but if she wanted to trade it in does it make any sense now to trade the thing?
The gas of course she only likes to run premium and that's just to kill her even before the war started
Uh, what would you suggest and it would it make sense to trade the car in she only drives like
Probably 10 miles a day
Uh, never really takes any road trips. Uh, probably be the last car
Uh, she's in her 70s. So probably be the last car she owns. What do you what do you think makes sense?
It trading it doesn't make any sense
She doesn't drive enough that even if she
If she picked up 10 miles per gallon
Which is substantial
Even with the price of gas today
The her savings would be
20
maybe 25 bucks a month and
And she was never going to drive enough to to pay that back and then taking a loss on the car that she's got
I can't make I can't make the case for her trading at all
I think she ought to just settle in and keep what she's got be happy with it
At 10 miles a day, you know, she's only filling up once a month
So, you know, even even and we know I know gas is on everybody's mind
And and I almost wrote an article for next week's newsletter about not panic trading, but I wanted to wait another week
When this war is over and it looks like it's winding down or about to I think gas prices will plummet and we'll be back
In texas at least to the 250 to 75
A gallon area real quick real quick
And I was going I was trying to ask her I was trying to tell her to I think you I've heard you mention
She only wants to you run the premium
But I've heard you say but you know the dealers encourage you to run the premium just because you get better mileage
And I don't know if it makes it
No, it does not and it's not the dealers the dealers don't care what octane you put in a car. It's the manufacturers
They test them with premium
Because they they will give you know as as much as 10 percent better fuel economy
But when you look at the difference in cost
That car will run great on regular
She does not need at all
To to run premium and if you will go to carpro.com don and and find the faq page
It's under
It's under car buying resources at the top
You'll see a fuel section and you'll see the article that I've written that so many people have read
It's titled do I really need premium fuel?
And the answer is no not
There are some exceptions
High horsepower engines for instance do not perform as well
On regular as they do premium. I've got one. I've got a Mercedes. It's got
623 horses. I tried it
And it just it's got a hesitation when but that's that's a rare exception if it's just a normal
4 or 6 cylinder engine even a smaller v8
It's it's going to run great on regular the car will adjust itself
And she could save a ton of money
Using regular so get that to read it get that article for and let her read it
How many miles do you think on that rdx?
Oh, that's a have any issues. Oh, it's a Honda. I mean
200,000
150 minimum
But 200 on the powertrain
I mean at 150 she could have
you know power went to
Motor go out she could have a
Air compressor go out. I mean you you're gonna have problems with any cars as it ages and as the miles trip up
Into six digits, but from a powertrain standpoint
She if she's in her 70s driving 10 miles a day. She ain't gonna live long enough to have a problem
Okay, okay

In
The news section of this week's
Newsletter it's the quick chefs. It's the automotive auto industry stories with jerry's commentary
There are a lot of good stories this week. It was hard for me to pick one
To mention or talk about but i'm gonna go with the one about the the license plate in florida
Story about a woman. She was pulled over in a traffic stop
Then the problem is there is a license plate law in florida that took effect last october
Where if the frame, you know the plate frame if it covers any of the actual license plate where and it's a vague law
And that's the problem. Yeah, it's a texas thing
If you cover anything like and the sunshine say they covered i think the s
Of that and because of that she got a ticket spinner night in jail
This became like a fight and a lot of people got involved in this. It's an interesting story to read but
For now that that particular law is still on the books and still in effect
Well, yeah, and i was in the car business still when it when that law went into effect and
My license plate frames that we put on every new car
had
it covered just a
Less than a quarter of an inch of the bottom of the letters and numbers so with that law then they would be
Yeah, i had to trash
Oh hundreds of them
And they weren't cheap. They were about at that time a dollar or something apiece. Yeah, and and i'm trashing
I mean that was at a good time in the car business when i was stocking
3000 new fords at all times you probably had hundreds and maybe thousands of them
Oh, I had thousands of them. Yeah, and a bunch of them running around on the streets
Let's go to tom and also in sugarland tom welcome. How can I help you?
Hey, jerry, thanks for taking my course. It's a pleasure is uh
Question is that i'm looking to uh get a uh toriota
The electric the uh the bz. Yeah, new a bigger battery
What what do you think?
We've reviewed it. It's great. I love
electrics. This is toriotas first
Attempt at an electric so we don't have any long-term history on it, but
With that said
it's a toriota
They waited a long time to come out with one and knowing the way toriota does business
They made sure it was it was perfected before they brought it out
everybody that I've helped
Get one loves it
my
My toriota dealer and dallas this morning had a special on one. It was a lease
With just just taxes down plus the first payment
And it was 379 a month. I mean that's just dirt cheap
And you got to remember too tom that
Electric cars are simpler than
Internal combustion engine cars. I mean, there's less things to go wrong
You know the biggest worry with an electric car is
range and battery life
And it seems seems to be really good with this car
um
Yeah, you know I
I'm hesitant with a lot of car companies to recommend a brand new car that just came out
I bought some myself and I've had good experiences with it
Now I don't think people need to be scared necessarily
Of a brand new car, but when it comes to toriota and lexus
I have zero fear
Okay, I think they they have the old one the the bc for x
Yeah, they have to have you know, there's not enough battery power on it. Yeah
Well, and it's but it was virtually the same car
It's because people like me on the radio made fun of the name
Because nobody could remember it
So they shortened the name and lengthened the battery range
And now they got a car that's selling
I thought they'd drop it. I really did. I thought they did just get rid of it
But they didn't they did what toriota does they made it better and they they fixed the problem
Which was the name?
And now they got a good selling electric and when I say good selling, I mean by comparison to other
Electrics out there. So you'd be fine. And I got some great toriota dealers near you at my website
Buying a new vehicle can either be like Christmas
Or like performing a root canal on yourself
Ouch

About this episode
Hour 2 of Car Pro Radio Show runs through new-car highlights, real-world deal talk, and listener Q&A. The hosts spotlight Nissan’s new Pathfinder (V6, 9-speed, up to 8 seats) and discuss lease specials on the Alfa Romeo Tonale. Jerry pushes practical buying guidance: don’t panic trade, prepaid/one-pay leases can make a $10k “used-car budget” work with a new warranty, and paying cash usually doesn’t lower the price. Callers weigh RAV4 vs Hyundai Palisade, keeping a low-mileage Toyota after a spouse’s passing, and whether premium fuel is necessary. The show also covers dealership transparency, Florida license-plate law drama, and Toyota bZ electric confidence.
