I came from a very meager.

Up bringing.

My folks.

Didn't have a lot of money.

When I was 29 years old.

And it failed.

That experience.

You get a used Lexus or a used vehicle.

Like that maybe.

You're going to get a lot.

You're going to get a lot of inclusion.

I'm talking about inclusions in the.

In the seats and in the sensing and things like that.

And you don't have to go to Lexus.

Do you?

Or did you say sometime one time.

Mazda loads are a lot of good things on there.

On in their vehicles that.

That are able to.

You know be be included that.

That are good.

The interiors are good.

The seats are good.

The sensing is good.

Or did you say.

Or should I just go ahead and get a get a used Lexus.

What you know.

You know.

For forty thousand bucks.

Can I do it.

Yeah.

One you can.

And yes I did say.

That Mazda has up the game.

As far as interiors.

They've really made a conscious effort.

To set themselves apart.

From their Japanese.

Competition.

And that's primarily Toyota and Honda.

Right.

Now they got to worry about Kia and Hyundai.

Korean competition.

So.

Mazda.

Being a smaller boutique car company.

They're never going to sell as many cars as.

Is.

Even a fraction of the cars.

That Toyota sells.

They know that.

So they decided to separate themselves out some.

And the.

And they did it with.

Technology.

That you'd never see.

Being the sky active technology which is.

The engine the transmission.

The.

Suspension the way they drive they've made the cars a little more.

Fun.

Then a Toyota or a Honda.

But the big difference has been Chris that they up the interior game.

Yeah they've got.

They've got as many bells and whistles.

As a Lexus now you've got to go.

To the upper line Mazda's to do that.

And.

If you do you'll have something that.

You know quality wise everything else is on the same.

You can talk about them in the same sentence as a Lexus.

And you can actually if you're going used.

You can get something newer and lower mileage in a Mazda by far.

Then what you're going to get in a Lexus now.

Don't anybody take this as.

I don't love Lexus I do.

I dearly do.

I recommend Lexus products probably more than any other brand out there.

Maybe except Toyota.

But.

If you want to get.

If you want to spend $40,000 in my.

My choice at 40 grand is an RX 350.

That's got.

50 60,000 miles on it or a Mazda.

CX 70.

That's only got.

You know 10,000 miles on it.

I'm going to go with the monster every single time.

So.

Whether the car was having problems like a major accidents flooding odometer tampering all these kinds of things.

And Jerry breaks it down and explains the different common brands when you get a branded title like things like salvage which was a total offspin insurer to being rebuilt.

And these are important things to know if you're getting yourself a used vehicle and you see that on there you need to know exactly what you're getting into.

Yeah you really do and a lot of people unfortunately people don't always pull that history report that I try to tell them to.

And that's that's going to be a big red flag on a history report and they don't see the title until later.

They buy the car they pay the money and you know from an individual seller from a used car dealer somewhere you know something like that.

And they don't see the that the title is branded which has a huge effect on the value of the car.

I would never thought to even pull that up and do it because you just trust and you can't do that these days.

It happened to one of our listeners which spurred me to write the article I realized I had never written on branded titles I talked about them on the air.

You know and in sadly every state does it different.

You know if I get one thing done in my lifetime it's going to be a universal titling system that the US government does instead of state by state.

Yeah I could see the importance of that uniform every title looks the same.

So over time people get used to looking at their car title some some people never see their car title because they never pay a car off.

But if you're going out to buy a car and you're paying cash or you know whatever you need to know if it's got a branded title.

Yeah because it's been some bad happened.

It's been a wreck.

It's had the odometer cut back.

It's been in a flood something.

It's been a buyback.

It's been a limit law buyback.

Yeah.

So you can go out and you spend $150,000 on a car without knowing it's a buyback.

Man.

What a nightmare.

Hi.

I have a question about pickup trucks.

Sure.

So I have a old Dodge Ram 2500 truck that I need to replace.

And I was going to just buy a used truck.

Yeah.

But you were talking earlier about leasing.

So now I'm curious is it possible to to lease a good pickup as a tow vehicle?

Yeah, it is.

Now, mileage is a big thing.

And the other thing is the wear and tear.

You know, if you're going to, you don't, you're not going to put a fifth wheel hookup

in it.

Are you?

Well, I would have to have a gooseneck hookup.

Yeah.

No.

I have a big horse trailer that I pull and I need a truck that'll pull it.

Yeah.

What's what's how big is the trailer?

Well, it's a three horse gooseneck.

It's about 6,000 pound empty.

Okay.

So with three horses and the gear you're talking you're over 15,000 pounds.

Yeah.

You don't want to lease.

It's not going to work out.

Okay.

And frankly, when there are very few trucks that lease really well anyway, Toyota does,

but Tundra is not going to do what you need to do for that kind of weight.

Okay.

So now, leasing is not for you, kiddo.

And that's why I always preface that with leasing is not for everybody and you're

not a candidate for it, unfortunately.

Okay.

So what are you going to do?

Are you going to buy a used one?

I would have to go used.

I can't afford a new one.

So I'm thinking maybe like a 2019 or 2020 pickup.

Yeah.

And you're going diesel, right?

Well, my current truck is a diesel and I love it, but I'm not sure.

I don't know which way to go.

I would.

I'd stick diesel.

It'll do the job better.

It'll last you longer.

Hey, Jerry, how are you doing?

I'm good, pal.

What's going on?

Hey, I'm looking for the ever exclusive minivan.

I want maybe a plug-in hybrid, maybe like the Christ of Pacifica,

but I'm also leaning towards the Toyota Sienna,

maybe a Kia Carnival or a Honda Odyssey.

What do you suggest?

Well, you hit them all.

That's good news.

You know, it kind of depends on how long you're going to keep it.

If you think you're going to put 200,000 miles or more on this van,

then this is a really easy decision.

I would go with the Toyota Sienna.

It's a great van, their hybrid system, outstanding, great gas mileage.

The van that I actually like the most is the Carnival.

The Kia Carnival is amazing.

The interior of those things, so nice.

But I don't know.

I can tell you, I don't think it'll go past 200,000 miles like the Sienna will.

I love the fact that all the Sienna's are hybrids.

I love Toyota's hybrid system.

They don't make a plug-in, but that's okay.

Now, the Pacifica so far has been really good.

That's a van that has got some neat features.

If you go hybrid in the Pacifica, you don't get the stow-and-go seating

because the batteries in the floorboard.

So the seats don't fold into the floor like they do the regular ones.

So if you're going hybrid, I wouldn't go Pacifica.

And the Odyssey is okay, too.

But for me, the Odyssey is just okay.

I don't find the quality of the Odyssey has ever been as good as the Toyota has.

The Sienna's just a great van.

So I think all things considered, I'd go with the Toyota.

Okay, have you tried the Chrysler Pacifica plug-in?

Oh, yeah.

I've got a review on it on my website.

It's great.

It's fine.

No problem.

But again, for longevity, it's not a Toyota.

And it won't ever be a Toyota.

So the biggest factor here is how long you think you're going to keep it.

But the Pacifica is great.

No issues.

I mean, I sound glib, but you really, I mean, you've spent a lot of hours on this.

With the tariff situation changing every single day.

And recalls, I mean, alone this past week.

That's the last thing we do.

And then we do that on Thursday night.

But, you know, as soon as I finish one on Thursday night and get everything to Amy

so she can make it pretty and send it out, I start on the new one.

So speaking of that, what are you working on for next week's newsletter

if we can get a sneak peek?

Yeah, I've got some more legal things that have popped up.

You know, the State Farm story from yesterday's newsletter about them

underpaying for settlements was one.

But then I've got one next week that is also going to be far reaching.

And it's a story about at a Nissan dealership in Connecticut.

Two sales managers were charged by the Federal Trade Commission.

It's not a good thing when the Federal Trade Commission comes in.

Not that comes after you by name.

And I've never seen a case before where sales managers were charged.

Yeah, that is interesting.

You expect that with owners, GMs maybe?

Yeah.

I've seen that.

But it's usually the owner or the owner of the dealership.

Two sales managers in this case.

So if sales managers are doing deceptive things at dealerships

after this gets out, they're going to be some scared, nervous people.

I would imagine.

Wow.

And there's nothing wrong with that.

You know, my mission when I started this show 24 years ago next week was, you know,

to bring light to the bad dealers and bring praise to the good dealers.

Yeah.

And I don't care what profession it is.

There's good and there's bad.

Oh yeah.

That's insurance broadcasters, you know.

Even broadcasters?

Even broadcasters, especially broadcasters.

And this was just a weird case.

This is an odd case.

But it's going to have an impact on the auto industry.

And I think it's for the good.

Another story was about a Mercedes Electric.

They're testing new battery technology.

Oh, really?

It's 749 miles on one charge.

Oh my gosh.

That's a game changer.

Sure.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is working hard to

standardize self-driving cars.

In what way?

Just to make sure that they're all the same.

Oh, well.

And that they talk to each other.

Ah, got it.

You know, they communicate.

And the systems work the same.

And that's going to be a good thing as self-driving becomes a

bigger issue.

It's been a non-issue in the past for most people.

I think we collectively have gotten ahead of that whole thing

thinking it was ready to go and it's not quite ready for

front-time.

Not even close.

And Tesla, that system's not even close.

And then just yesterday, and I have the details on this

because I haven't got them all yet, but Ram, who has been

touting their electric truck for years and how great it was

going to be.

And it's got a 500-mile range.

Impressive.

They scrapped the entire project.

What?

It's gone.

They're not doing it.

That's surprising.

Not really.

No.

Okay.

Everything sounded good up until then.

Given the electric market and the lack of...

Oh, the market kind of going away because of the...

And then you take the $7,500 federal money away at the

end of this month.

Balloon is deflated.

It's gone.

Hi, Jerry.

Thanks for taking my call.

Oh, it's a pleasure.

It's a question about a decision of three cars that I've

chosen.

The Toyota R4, the Escape, and the Subaru.

I'm a senior.

I don't drive a lot.

And I just wonder, and I guess I want to buy new and maybe

a hybrid.

So what's your opinion on that?

Well, if you go hybrid, I'd go with the RAV4.

I know I sound like a broken record with talking about

Honda.

I'm sorry, Toyota hybrids, but they are simply the best.

They started it.

I mean, they've been building hybrids for 25 years.

They got it down.

Everybody else was a very late comer to the ball game with

hybrids.

But look, if you don't drive a lot, then long-term

reliability for you isn't as big an issue as it is for a

lot of people who drive more miles.

Correct.

So let's talk about safety for a second.

There's just simply nothing safer than an outback.

I mean, any Subaru, and reliability-wise, I think the

Subaru's ever been as good as the Toyota.

But we're not talking hybrids here.

We're talking regular.

Okay.

So if you go non-hybrid, I'd go outback.

Outback.

And that's for the safety and that sort of thing.

And look, there's nothing wrong with the escape.

I like the escape.

I got my mother-in-law one in 2018.

But we know the escape is going away.

And if you're going to keep it for a very long time, I

don't really want to put you in a car that's going to,

you know, we know is being discontinued.

When is it going to be discontinued?

I think 26.

26 is the last year.

Yeah.

They did away with the edge this year.

It's gone completely.

Yeah.

Escape's going away next year.

And we don't know what's replacing it.

So if you're going to do something pretty soon and I

don't think that's a bad idea because I'm going to

tell you cars are going up in price and they're going

to continue to.

And there's still some deals on 2025s.

And I've got great Toyota dealers.

I've got great Subaru dealers at carpro.com that I

And they'll take good care of you.

I think you ought to drive both.

Outback is bigger.

I think the ride is probably a little better on the

drive four, given that the outback is all-wheel drive.

So you get, you set up a little bit more in an all-wheel drive.

So that's good for visibility.

Yeah.

That's what I want because the car I drive now,

I have a Volvo and you have these big trucks or SUVs

that park alongside me and I can't see back and out.

Okay.

The camera system is good on the Subaru.

I think I'd go with the Subaru if I were you.

Seriously.

I don't think you can go wrong.

Some funny things, some funny commentary.

A couple of stories caught my attention.

The one about the Taco Bell where the guy went through the drive-through

and it was AI, all artificial intelligence.

Yeah.

And he's trying to get the order done.

He kept asking, do you want another drink?

How about a drink?

You want a drink with that?

So finally he just said, okay, I want to order 18,000 waters.

Why is this system kind of mellowed down?

And then the other story, which I thought was great,

was a man driving a Dodge Charter Daytona EV and EV

and State Trooper pulled him over and said,

well, I'm going to give you a citation for a loud exhaust.

And it's an EV.

Yes.

No exhaust system.

So there is a, I guess it's speakers, external speakers

that Dodge makes called the Fransonic Chambered Exhaust

to make the EV sound like a muscle car.

And apparently you can adjust that volume.

I learned from you just earlier.

Yeah.

Didn't know, you've drove that, right?

Yeah, I've reviewed it twice.

And that was a great experience, huh?

It was.

I loved the car.

For an electric, it was fun.

So you have an electric car.

You have the benefits of all that.

Then you have a muscle car sound

and it's got that great charger look to it.

Man, that's a pretty cool ride, I would imagine.

Yeah, it is.

But I don't think you were out of ticket for that.

I don't think not either.

Well, good morning, Jerry.

This is Fred Hungerford.

And I wanted to speak with you regarding my experience

with Sandra Bruning.

Oh, yeah.

Toyota Pasadena.

Sure.

Sandra's awesome.

So my wife and I were looking for a new 2025

Highlander Hybrid Platinum Trim in red,

which I found out is not a very common color.

Right.

So I've gone to a couple dealers in my local area.

And one dealer found a car.

Then he wanted a $3,500 additional markup.

And I said to heck with that.

And I called Sandra Toyota Pasadena.

Yeah.

She is outstanding.

She had to do some searching.

It is a rather uncommon model.

Found one on another dealer, had it for me the next day.

It turned out to be the same exact car that the local dealer had.

And she sold it to me without a dealer markup.

It had some additional equipment.

I really wasn't interested in a Highlander like a tow package

and things.

I wanted the hybrid.

But and she said, well, you know what?

We're not going to charge you for some of these extra features

you don't want.

So she just discounted the car about $1,500.

And it was the most fantastic car experience I ever had.

So she saved you five grand.

Yep.

Wow.

Yeah.

I love Sandra.

We get so many nice people going on her web.

At our website, given leaving feedback on Sandra

everybody says the same thing.

Everybody loves her.

And I can see why.

She's awesome.

You know, typically she's not able to save somebody $5,000 on a Toyota.

But it worked out for you.

And I'm sure glad for it.
