Welcome back to EV News Daily.

Today, we'll have a look at some Euro EV sales data.

Tesla sales are halved in the last two years and Genesis enters France.

Plus, they tuned later in the show.

I'll tell you why Volkswagen Group are back in court with diesel gate.

This thing rumbles on.

On EV News China today, we're talking about the EV Boom over Spring Festival.

Small EV sales are slumping and NEO achieving a swapping record.

Let's start with Germany then.

So plug-in EVs took 35% of Germany's new car market in December last year.

That's up from 23% the same time the previous year.

BEVs were 22% of Germany.

Plug-in hybrids were 12%.

A late-year shift towards plug-in vehicles.

For the full year last year in Germany, plugins were exactly 30% share.

And it was pretty much up from exactly 20% share in 2024.

Purebevs rose from 13% to 19%.

Plug-in hybrids climbed from 7% to 11%.

Overall, volumes changed little.

Germany registered about 250,000 new cars in December last year.

Now in December's BEV rankings, the VW ID7 led the way with 3,000 registrations.

Then she got a LROC and then Volkswagen ID3.

For the quarter last year, it was ID7, then ID3, then ID4 and 5.

We lumped them together.

Tesla in Germany are certainly having a tough time.

Tesla's Model Y fell 59% versus the same month in 2024.

We always try and look at year-on-year with Tesla because you can't really look at monthly data month-to-month

because of the way the exports and things like that work.

So try and look at year-on-year, try and smooth things out a little bit.

And certainly in Germany, even though they've got a factory dedicated to them there,

having some issues with Tesla there.

Now, plug-in EVs took 68% of Sweden's passenger car market in December last year.

So that's 68.6% up from 62% a year earlier.

For the full year 2025, plug-ins were 63% in Sweden.

That's up from 58% in 2024.

The overall market is up slightly.

Bevshare has been rising though.

So pure Bev is now 36.5% for the full year in Sweden and plug-in hybrids 26%.

What led the way?

Well, in December it was the Volvo EX30.

Be pleased to hear Volvos and Sweden still getting on very nicely.

And that's ahead of the Polestar 4, also Swedish, and the Volkswagen ID7.

The EX40 also led the entire quarter of 2025.

Q4 ahead of the VW ID7 and Kia EV3.

In Sweden, the Model Y dropped from 17,000,

17 and a half thousand registrations in 2024 to just five and a half thousand in 2025.

That's about two thirds of its volume in Sweden.

Of course, the ongoing labor dispute, I imagine, is taking up some of the press

and things like that, but Tesla still sell cars in Sweden, but a lot less than they used to.

What about in the UK, the United Kingdom plug-in EVs last month?

Sorry, in December 2025, 43.8% of that Bevshare 32 and plug-in hybrids 11.6%.

And so the point of going through these countries is to show that in nearly everywhere

in the big European markets, the ones that are maybe not the biggest markets,

but the ones that have gone more EV, like Norway, like Sweden,

and BEVs are normally two-to-one as popular as plug-in hybrids.

We watch that split really carefully, actually, and it's pretty much the case in many places.

Here in the United Kingdom, we have a mandate, so many places don't.

We do. It's technically the ZEV mandate, not technically that, but we call it that.

And so headline numbers of 22% in 2024, we just missed it.

28% last year, we just missed it.

But both were met by the time you factor in that the overall EV market met it.

So some companies didn't meet those mandates, but they were able to trade credits with others that did.

And so as an industry, we met it.

And this year, it's going to be 33%, and we may just miss it.

So you get a 32%. Now, I'm making up numbers, but say it's 31%.

Well, a third of all new cars being BEVs, that's amazing.

Our mandate goes to 52% in 2028.

In case you're wondering, it's 2028, the end of that year, by the way, that we make the flip.

So the UK will flip over if we meet our mandate.

More than half of all new cars sold will be a BEV in two years' time.

The end of that, two and a half years' time, I guess, a bit more than that.

And so it's a great number, but of course the installed car park,

the amount of cars on the road, still a ton of petrol and diesel cars,

and they're going to last many decades, and so important work to be done.

Tesla's January sales in 13 European markets fell 49% versus January of 2024.

So we're looking at two years here, because it's interesting, isn't it?

So if you look back Tesla two years ago, there was certainly the whole kind of Twitter,

X thing had happened, but the politics thing hadn't really happened at Tesla.

And so it's down 49% over the last two years.

Tesla has shed roughly half its European audience in two years

against the stated 50% annual growth rate, actually, by the end of this year.

So the end of the decade.

The UK fell 55%, Germany 59%, Netherlands 81%,

Switzerland down 79%, Spain, Portugal, Denmark.

I can go through the numbers.

Tesla's got some real issues to fix in Europe.

And I'm not going to be the one to suggest how they do that,

the cars that they do sell, you know, half decent,

obviously SNX are now off the table.

So they've only got two cars left.

Cybertruck can't be sold here because of pedestrian safety

and they're not going to redesign Cybertruck.

If anything, they're probably going to knock Cybertruck on the head.

But I mean, who knows.

And so, yeah, work to be done.

A little bit of marketing, sales, promotions.

I see some 0% deals, you know,

and that's a hard cost to Tesla's bottom line.

So not, you know, you've got to put a lot of money down

on a deposit and things like that.

But those deals are there.

Right, let's move on.

Genesis has entered France as its fifth European market

following Germany, UK, Switzerland and Italy.

These Genesis cars are fantastic, by the way.

I told you recently that it launched in Italy.

France, just like Italy, is only EV.

So Genesis have got a bit of combustion stuff,

but not in France, not in Italy,

not in the new markets that they're launching in.

So GV60, electric GV70, electric G80,

so SUV and luxury saloon.

They have an operating headquarters in Europe in Frankfurt

and they have a long-term commitment, they say,

to the European continent.

Now, Amazon's electric delivery van from Rivian

has surpassed 30,000 units now in the US and parts of Europe,

a 50% increase from the end of 2024 when it was 20,000.

This is, as per the Rivian shareholder letter,

by the way, at the end of Q4.

The milestone is measured against the commitment in 2019.

I had to look this up because I remember talking about it

at the time which just goes to show what was that

seven years ago on this podcast.

I was saying, Amazon, we're going to drive

100,000 of these around in 2030.

And I remember that, it's odd how things,

I mean, I can't remember what I had for breakfast,

but I remember talking about that on the podcast

and saying, like, is that a straight line?

Is that, is it an S-curve?

Is it just going to be 10,000 vehicles a year

over the next 10 years, which it wasn't?

And so they've got to make up some numbers

if they're going to get to 100,000 by 2030.

70,000 still to build and deliver.

They've got four years to do that.

And so the pace is nearly, you know,

double its historical average

if they are going to hit that 100,000 target.

Most of the vans are in the U.S.

By the way, a few hundred in Germany

where Rivian's expanding.

Amazon's installed 17,000 EV charges

at U.S. delivery centers.

Now DHL supply chain has opened

its 20th global EV center of excellence.

This one in Slovakia.

It's a massive facility

covering EV logistics from inbound, outbound freight

to battery testing and charging.

The site includes controlled temperature

and humidity zones, separate areas for general

and hazardous goods.

They say DHL Center of Excellence

serves automotive OEMs,

serves battery manufacturers and their suppliers as well.

The global network of sites

from China, Singapore, Indonesia,

Australia, USA, Mexico, South Africa

and more say that they're a gateway

for e-mobility growth.

That's interesting, isn't it?

Right, one more story before we take a break.

And this one is about just a quick bit of news.

We've talked a lot about Rivian's R2s

over the last couple of weeks or so.

Rivian just really quickly confirming

on its earnings call

that the R2 compact SUV

does begin its production sometime in Q2.

But they say volume will ramp through

the second half of the year.

These things are always a little wooly, aren't they?

It starts at normal Illinois with one shift

and they're going to guide to about 67,000 deliveries.

So that's as a business.

So probably 42,000 of the R1 series in the vans

and so probably 25,000 up to of the R2s this year.

So still a smaller part of their business

but R2 will be the majority of Rivian's business

by the end of next year.

Normal can make 215,000 vehicles per year.

They've designated about 155,000 of those

are going to be R2.

Base price around $45,000

but of course the launch editions will come first

and they'll cost a lot more.

This is interesting.

Stellantis are bringing back diesel

in seven European model lines.

They had 100% Bev Target by 2030.

And so there was a diesel return of the Peugeot 308

and the DS4, the Opel Astra as well, or Vauxhall Astra

at the end of last year.

But now they want to retain more diesel at Stellantis

just at a time when geographically,

a business like Stellantis, which is very European

and American, must be split in two

because of course Trump tariffs on imported EVs,

the end of the federal tax credit

has led to a very different timeline of EVs in America,

whereas in Europe, as I tell you about all the time,

as I've just mentioned at the beginning of the podcast,

Europe is going full steam ahead with electric vehicles.

Stellantis sold 2.4 million vehicles in Europe last year,

but that was down 6%

and they're looking for some fixes.

And where are they looking for it?

They're looking for it at the pump.

I'm not convinced that's a great idea,

but they are facing a different timeline to go EV

than they thought they were going to.

And these companies have to make money.

I'm interested to watch that one.

Very interesting.

They're not slowing down on EV,

but reintroducing that it's going to be difficult

with things like emissions targets and mandates

and we'll wait and see.

Hey, Suzuki's next in the news.

First fully electric production car arrives this June in Australia.

That would be the Vitara or E-Vitara.

Now got its full specifications.

Aussie is going to get two grades,

motion and ultra.

Motion uses a front wheel drive,

49 kilowatt hour pack.

The range is 344 kilometers

or 214 miles.

The ultra trim has a 61 kilowatt hour

all wheel drive setup

and 245 miles

or almost 400 kilometers.

Both of them ride on Suzuki's e-platform.

The E-Vitara comes standard with LFP,

lithium ion phosphate batteries,

integrated heat pump as well,

battery thermal management

with the all wheel drive system as well.

They say to distribute torque

where it needs to sharpen the traction

on loose and slippery surfaces

and charging AC and DC wise

they are aiming for an 80% charge

in 45 minutes.

That feels all very...

2018 doesn't it anyway?

And they say that it'll have

7 kilowatts or 11 kilowatt

three face on board charges.

So look the E-Vitara is quite good

looking little vehicle.

Actually 10.25 inch instrument cluster,

10.1 inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay,

Android Auto, physical switches for climate,

nice little glass roof with a shade,

wireless phone charging,

things like that.

Loads of safety gear,

pricing not been announced,

anything around $40,000

which is 28,000 US equivalent.

So BYD ATO 3,

Hyundai Kona, Keer EV3.

That would be very competitive

for certainly the base spec of that car as well.

Okay, Volkswagen are going to have to go back to court

once again because of Dieselgate.

This is what we got me into EVs

if no one knows my origin story.

No one cares about my origin.

I'm not a superhero,

but my as they say the origin story.

It was Dieselgate that made me really interested

because I thought driving a blue motion Golf

meant that I could drive past school gates

and feel smug that I wasn't polluting people.

And then it turned out they were doing all sorts of funky things

with my blue motion diesel Golf.

And so that's kind of got me,

that got me aware of what I was driving.

I didn't get into EVs like that day,

but that's the journey started there.

And then obviously I discovered Robert Llewellyn

and fully charged and off we go with EV News Daily.

Volkswagen Group is going to go back in court,

a criminal trial in France over diesel emissions scandal.

French prosecutors accuse Volkswagen

of deceit concerning goods that endanger human

and animal health under French law.

The Paris court will discuss trial dates,

but hearings look unlikely to start before next year.

Volkswagen have declined to comment so far.

They do I'll let you know.

The case sits in a wider net.

French authorities are pursuing Renault

and two Stellantis units over.

Emissions irregularities as well.

The scandal has exacted a steep price.

Tens of billions of dollars

extracted from automotive balance sheets.

So much gets made of battery investments

and write downs and write offs and the EV

change isn't happening as quick as some companies thought.

Nothing compared to what they had to spend on dieselgate.

Courts keep picking at the same thread.

In Germany, four former VW managers convicted

for their roles in the UK.

Mercedes-Benz, Ford and other automakers

are all facing this long march

of things like class action style trials.

A decade on that legal clock is still ticking.

Do we need any more evidence

that the move to EV just needs to happen?

Let's just put the past behind us.

I know that the legal process has to happen,

but what a place we got ourselves into

with dieselgate and the,

all of them were doing a version

of just emitting fumes.

But we know how to, it's a solved problem.

EVs solve that problem.

It's not like we're scratching our heads.

I can't even invent an electric vehicle.

It's been done.

And so, more evidence we just need to move on.
