Welcome. Are you ready for this? I don't know if I am. To driving home for Christmas.
This is the only reason we hold it. Driving home. Just so we could have driving home for
Christmas. A Christmas special. And we've had this years now and we've not done a Christmas
special. So we're driving home for Christmas. The name has finally paid off. It took a while.
But it has. Do we spoil the magic of podcasts and YouTube by letting people know that we're not
filming this on Christmas day? No we are. We're not with a family. We've just gone for a drive
instead. That's right. Happy Christmas but I need to go. I need to go yeah. I'm working. Sorry.
But I thought we'd stick with the Christmas theme and keep it Christmasy. Forget all the
politics and cars and green energy and all that. So the hand which stuck to you got for Christmas
came from Chai. In my head people right now are listening to this in a car because it's a podcast
with their family and it's snowing outside. They're stuck on the M1. It's like the intro to
Gremlins. Everyone's cozy warm and they're going home for Christmas. There's Christmas in the air
that sort of thing and they're like let's listen to a Christmas podcast. So we thought we'd stick
with that by basically saying stories toys and presents we've had over the years and I'm going
to start with I think the thing that I genuinely miss from my childhood Christmases. Ending Novemberish
I think it was. It had land on the doormat. Are we talking the Argos Christmas catalogue?
No but that's another one. The Radio Times. Straight to Christmas Day. What films are we
recording to keep on VHS? Make sure that nothing clashed. Yeah and then set the video recorder
because that's when you get dyad and stuff like that isn't it? The proper Christmas on VHS.
Proper Christmas film. Yes and it is a Christmas film before I do it. It is definitely a Christmas
and it's got Christmas songs. It's a Christmas film. But do you know like oh it's this film.
Oh they get the radio. The thing is that people listening abroad will go to the radio what?
So the Radio Times was a magazine. I think you can still buy it. A TV guide.
A TV guide so you open the other. They had listings of what was being shown each day.
And what you do around Christmas is you'd make sure that nothing clashed with each other.
Yeah and plan your entire day of viewing. When's the Christmas Queen's speech?
You have to watch in this country it's the law. Yeah even though nobody really pays attention to it.
You all sat down and watched it. You did yeah at the end you had to salute. Oh yeah yeah yes.
Sing the anthem. But no I love how in here comes a bride.
Oh dear. But no you know when I think back to memories there's a certain thing like you said
getting the Argos catalogue and thumbing through it in October November. All the white pages here.
What did you what do you want for Christmas? Have a look through that because there's no
internet remember this day. This was our internet. This is the Grattons catalogue for the underwear
section. The Argos basically how we learned things. It was Amazon wasn't it? It was yeah.
That I mean think about Argos you got the catalogue you went home you picked what you
want and you went and bought it. I just literally Amazon and it was amazing.
You could go it was it was like an Amazon in every town. You went in you wrote down seven numbers.
You handed that to somebody and then your gifts appeared from heaven down the conveyor belt.
Yep. It was like a game show almost. Yeah I worked at Argos. I know what's at the top of the conveyor
bar. Is it just like it's like what everyone imagines it being. A black hole but in reverse
so it's just spruce presents. There's nothing up there it's just presents.
Like I said the magic portal to another dimension. I loved working at Argos.
I rarely did it was because it was over Christmas and it was fun and I remember being there
on Christmas Eve at four o'clock when they shut. Yeah and basically my job was for that half hour
to stand next to the door with the door locked, keys in door, to let people out but not in but
yeah and I can still picture a few people now going. I'm like we're shocked. Well there's people
inside. Yeah they came in before but yeah yeah and they're not allowed to let anybody in anymore.
I was working until like early January because it was just over Christmas. Yeah the universe
and so on. I did really I did care because I loved it but I didn't really care what I said.
I wouldn't know where I was going. I'm like it's four well ten past four on Christmas Eve and you're
coming to get a Christmas present. Well they all met. Yeah you're casting away. Yeah but I'm like
what I'm sorry I'm not taking this. I got you some windscreen wipers and have you been to 25 hour
garage? Yeah I mean if you think oh what are you playing at? But no it before Amazon you couldn't
order it on the line could you? It just you had to go get it. There wasn't just an online. You just
had to go and get the minute. Yeah I mean the only toys we knew about were on TV adverts. Yeah
the same tools. Yeah we thought YouTube you had adverts for toys. No internet no computers. No
but so this is the 80s and then eventually going into the 90s but mainly the 80s.
But there's all like little things and they take you back to your mum and dad
that I'm like oh god yeah that always makes me think a Christmas yeah. So we never got coca cola
um the part unless it was like a birthday or something like that you know we had occasional
pop but it was always like roller cola three litre bottle of a coke for 40. They all taste the same
the 12 different colours. But at Christmas we always got tins so if I ever see you like a 24
pack of coke yeah it makes me think a Christmas. No it doesn't for me it's speaking of tins the tins
of quality street. Actual tins. And they were about that big. I'd lost an arm once in there you
were like a bucket wasn't it. I'm sure I remember seeing one that was three kilograms. Yeah you get
to a point where that had lasted you well into January. And we always had a bag running up to
Christmas that was behind the settee next to the drinks cabinet. Yeah. Where all the chocolate
something mum would buy stuff. Yeah it'd go in that the coke would be underneath. Yeah I still knew
that. You weren't allowed to go in it until Christmas of course. I still do that a little bit
each week just putting it into the bag. That's set off because there's a guy behind me. But yeah
it's little things that come back to me like even to this day I've now made sure it's our tradition
in our house to have a Chinese on Christmas Eve. Now the reason for that is because Chinese was
his favorite meal. And back then you had occasional takeaways but yeah it was not. You did not have
a well yeah you can go and just eat or something like that and basically get any cuisine from
anywhere any time. So it's kind of ruined special occasions. Yeah I remember takeaways being followed
as well. But this was in the restaurant. I remember dinnest it. Oh yeah. In Keyflit. Yeah.
Obviously it's no longer there now and unfortunately the people are no longer with us.
They died in a flat about a year after they sold the restaurant because of a
carbon look. Carbon oxide. The red is already flat. Wow. And we knew them really well because
again any special occasion we went to dinnest it. And do you know why we always go on Christmas Eve?
Why is that? Because and this is what my mum said. The dough up on Christmas day.
Ah that's forget. Indeed yeah. Because she said if they did we'd be eating there. There's plenty
of restaurants around where we are that do open on Christmas day. You can get a curry for your
Christmas dinner. They're doing it well yeah they wouldn't name me. It's £45 for an adult
and £25 for like Alice's age for Christmas day. Wow. Four courses. That's not bad is it?
Not really. So no I like Christmas dinner but now when you're older and making it I can understand
why your favourite meal is the Chinese and you don't want to have to cook. Let's go to the Chinese.
Oh damn it's not over. Their thing is cooking a Christmas meal. It's a full day job in there
really. It's early in the morning. It's a few hours and it's all gone in 15 minutes. You have to keep
checking back don't you? But we always had a posh version of a roasting of course. I presume
everyone else did. So I didn't like them and I still don't now but they always had a starter
which you never do. Which one do you face? No no. Well it was my first. Anytime I had wine
just a little bit. The little glass so it was a loud little glass. But we always had the starter and
they always had prawn cocktail. Oh god no. In those little dishes they only come out of the cupboard
on special occasions. Was this one of those things that people pretended to like just because it was
special? Yeah and of course for a little bit of pudding. I mean we had loads of puddings but
for the little bit in the jar it was a bit of angel delight going on. Oh angel delight. For me
you know. If you remember that one. I do yeah. I did you know what I tried an angel delight because
I saw her in the co-op and I thought that's going to take me straight back to my childhood.
I had a mouthful of it. Did it really make it or powdered? It was powdered and you make it up.
All right. It was. Don't revisit your childhood then. No no don't. It's just a spell word for me.
But as a child yeah. Do you know what? Speaking of the desserts. What always reminded me of a
special occasion. We didn't get this at home because you know we weren't special enough at home.
Over winter my grandmother would have a buffet where everyone on the other side would go.
And you knew you were on a good thing when the Vianetta came out. You know what I was thinking
like yesterday. You could still buy them. You could still buy them. I was like oh my god we are
we are so posh. It was though wasn't it. And you know what else you got. Just special occasions
but usually just Christmas. Which wasn't particularly nice but all because of an advert
people bought them. After eight. After eight. So it's mad to say that. Yep. That meant that you
didn't have to brush your teeth. It's just it's all from adverts isn't it. That's the only reason
people had to be in a mint because of after eight. I think the thing is you get an after eight and
you're suddenly thinking that you've gone up a couple of classes haven't you. I'll get the
butler to bring the after eights out. And it's true isn't it when you cut into a Vianetta.
Oh yeah. That crack. Yeah. You go through the layers. But yeah we always were allowed a pudding each.
And but what I mean by that over the few days of Christmas. Yeah. We would literally my mum would
literally make or we would a pudding each. So it could be like we always had a trifle for my dad.
Yeah. And we're talking about a trifle. Yeah. I still make them now. And just a Christmas.
You know and and every in there would be another. I just think of puddings at Christmas as in
after Christmas and for a few days. I think the whole thing of the old Christmas period.
Do you know there's that week in between where you don't know what day it is. Oh yeah. It is that
thing of luxury foods and overindulging. Yeah. Christmas dinner you're not full unless you
can breathe. If you can breathe there's still room for more. Yeah. And then when you can breathe
again you have a bit more. And of course you had all the little bit of little trim the tree mix.
Yeah. And fixing blankets. Yeah. But the thing is I've tried to try and I've my mum shown me
many times over the years. But no matter how much effort I put into it whether it's a Christmas or
just a normal roast dinner he's never as good as the one your mum makes. I think the thing is is
food you cook yourself is never as good as food that somebody cooks for you. I think because
you've been around it all day and the smell of it and tasting it. It's just not a surprise when
you go oh yeah you have been cooking it all day. I know that tastes like that. Do you know when you
go home? You don't happen much these days but you know you go back to your mum's arms and
they make a roast or something. Yeah. And it's like yeah. I still can't make it. I think they
can take you straight back to your childhood though. Yeah. What so it's not actually that good. It's
just I think it is nostalgic. I think it's good but I think the smells are there and the
nostalgia is there. It tastes like you know times when you were a kid and I think he's that whole
package. And it's also the fact that your mum and and he's a bit of our older school of thinking.
That chicken and that you know the potatoes and everything is done. It comes out when it's ready
rather than when the beeper goes off. Yeah. Too many times now and you know regularly this I think
Oh is it ready yet? Well it's got five minutes left. No no it's ready when it's ready. Yeah yeah
not when the when it goes beep beep. How long will it take when I can even have it cooked
or not. Yeah that's what mum's the best at either going. No. And of course the chicken
was always ticked out and we had gravy from the juices yet rather than from the packet.
Thing about like mum's cooking is the flat eyes. I mean I try this as best I can but
when I was a kid tea was always ready at five o'clock to like to be atomic clock. Yeah. It wasn't
five pasty. It wasn't five total. It was five o'clock and it was piping hot. Now I'm cooking
something and I'm going. Time. Yeah just yeah it might be about. Another 10 minutes. I don't
consider myself to be a you know I'm not I'm not a chef but I'm not a bad cook. I don't know.
But I don't know what it is with you know I think it's mum's timing. Well yeah I practice it. It's
my grandma she always made the mince pies for Christmas. Oh homemade mince pies. And there
were even to this day I've not found another mince pie laugh. Yeah they'll have that homemade and you
know and she made the mince. She'd buy in a jar. Oh god my grandma never bought anything. It's all
done by cups as in when I say cups she just went there's no measuring. No no no. And she always
my mum tried to do them as using a recipe. Yeah and we still joke about it to this day.
They were like concrete. Yeah. So like if you dropped it there'd just be a crack in the floor
and yeah. Oh your teeth. Yeah but she always did it my grandma whether whatever she was cooking
bread everything spot without just like eye yeah flour sugar the lot and you think that that for me
is what this is the skill that's disappearing isn't it real there's people out there that still
can do that but yeah when we bought your bread you made everything just knowing how it is by the door
yeah yeah no that needs a bit more didn't it. Yeah it's a skill that's disappeared but it's not people
making their own Christmas cakes or people start making a Christmas cake oh it takes ages yeah
months to stick and then no one absolutely likes it. Having brandy to it yeah so imagine you're
storing that in your house it's like a bomb isn't it my dear go on a bit more brandy don't smoke
around it. I always find uh UK Christmases traditionally have at least half of the food
you're eating no one actually likes it's just what they have it's expected you're like a Christmas
dinner sorry a Christmas pudding it's not nice I don't like Christmas pudding it's but it's but
you have it because it's Christmas it's like I do enjoy Brussels sprouts but I know a lot of people
don't but you're getting them Christmas day with your like them or not. And turkey, turkey isn't as
nice for me just that it's got the steak yeah steak yeah chicken something like that but you're getting
turkey because that's traditional you don't eat turkey any other time of the year because it's not
as nice though so that's the thing isn't it in some ways now and because you can eat anything almost
anywhere at any time there's there's no more special meals not what that says isn't it I think
things used to be seasonal didn't they so you don't have certain things at certain times of the year
and now where you're chickening food from across the world yeah there's just not that easy anymore
it's like a chinese takeaway we uh we had one occasionally the chinese which I know because
I remember reading about in the papers got shut down twice over the 10 years we used it but if food
was amazing for food IG status but ultimately it was you might have won every couple of months
something like that as a treat and we if we ever got one this is very uh 80s yeah the only time
we got one if unless it was a birthday or something but was if my mum won a bingo and came back with
money yeah yeah yeah because if you should get out she should go with a friend every sunday
bingo for years and every now and only a thing that wouldn't it oh yeah a bingo a bingo or a grand
adonis right on the horses and not that but we've just been go with it yeah um and but yeah it was a
case of you'd look out of the window because she get dropped off and if she had about that carrier
bag yeah that yeah but you get it's like yes she's chinese and she's won and I remember once she came
back but in mine this is probably late 80s and she had a chinese and it was like a big chinese
and she was oh oh oh bear in mind she was only probably in her 40s at the time yeah oh oh oh
i'm like what what what and do i get i won i won yeah i know if i'm just getting the chinese yeah
i don't care money's a reality 1500 quid 1500 in the 80s wow that's a lot of money i mean they're
probably spent about five grand in the years that they went there obviously you never win
it's like you pay into it and then go down it's a bank account isn't it really high
savings interest account i remember that oh i don't know six seven years are probably more probably
over 10 years ago now uh do you know online uh bingo yeah uh when there were used to be lords
you get like 40 quid yeah of some free one year um uh like to bet on yeah yeah and my mum said oh
shall i try it so she went on to online bingo oh wait a minute is this sending us it might be all
right do you think yeah well it's it's snowy around here we're going over the tops so we might get
stuck and then we're doing a really long podcast we are that's fine it's roll nails here oh there
get sorry couldn't live your parsley was right but no um where was i oh i think she went on online
bingo and i went like there you go look you put a tenor on you get 40 quid extra i said
you know it's a tenor have a bit of fun i'm knocking you in it 10 minutes later she went
and out you know you know it's on a laptop in here so yeah you know what she's done now
she's just blown it all in one go something shut down what's this say and i went what what
am i looking at it says i said i will leave one all right yeah a thousand pounds she won a thousand
pounds on the third bingo game i'm like so she transferred 900 of it back and she played that
hundred pound every now and then for a year wow and then never played it again she's the only
person in the world to do online gambling and that's why i actually believe something here
but she's like i don't know if i read it and it said you've won a thousand pounds but i didn't
believe it yeah i've actually done this yet but you didn't believe it until you transferred it
it was in Europe actually i had the money in here i don't know how we got on to that from the uh
christmas shiny's bring the turn oh yeah yeah and that yeah and it's it's little things is it and it
another thing that it's all food related stall on christmas we never had that because my mum
didn't like it both as the Germans maybe but you know the um and and we still get them now because
it reminds me of christmas and i do quite like them like trays of small pretzels and long sticks
yeah it's like a it's like if like a pretzels did bombay mix yeah yeah bombay mix that sort of
stuff you only get a christmas ginger beer ginger beer i used to get ginger beer when i was wine
we never did that again probably because my mum didn't like it so they thought we didn't have it
oh it's a lot of ice a year oh this is interesting oh we're all right just that bit
thought we'd drive come on come on just where the side of the road is yeah on some there we are
so i suppose it is food related but do you remember any presents because i remember once
uh i got back to food just for a minute okay did you ever used to get just so it was for
my man then you remind me of christmas those tins of cookies
got like a tins of cookies no it's a little sharp without cookies it may be the yeah no tins of like
chocolate chip cookies in the tin i think we really got oh here's a question for you then
that's really highly related to christmas food call it a street or roses for me it was all we
always went for i won't say which yet i always we got both but i already get both which one was
the one you got the walnut in like quality streets or these both could do what i'm thinking quality
streets sorry we just picture it the tin in my head yeah the blue tin was the roses yeah there's
quality street for me was roses was it yeah he had more of that i liked yeah um and no dark
chocolate or that green one that nobody liked yeah but that that now for me sums up christmas
cook quality street tins lots of homemade food and puddings now it's not quite that because
it's a bit more commercialized now isn't it a bit too lazy out we would just buy stuff instead of
making i think the thing is now people buy frozen stuff stick it in an air fryer and then
pull it out or the yeah it cooks it in 10 15 minutes in an air fryer and yet we still don't
get tea bang on five o'clock i'm on the dad no who who well mom and dad mom who essentially
was creating a full from ground up one and still timed it perfectly yeah and he still
get i love stuffing it's one of my favorite stuffing's nice isn't it yeah cat go wrong
but yeah christmas presents i remember one i was probably about eight and nine because
from blood i remember my brother wanted a stereo but when i say stereo we're talking like that
sort of 90 system or midi system uh it's actually not it'll be a bit bigger for him a bit earlier
with the vinyl record player on top yeah yeah because people still actually have them night
it wasn't just it's all you could get your music before cds tape deck vinyl on top and radio in the
middle yeah and then you speak it's and they hid it behind the the the settee so we're all coming
down doing the christmas thing i'm opening my lego lego lego everyone got lego everyone got lego
yeah um and with that and his face just kept on getting worse and worse
a significant one there until the very last present i mean he you could tell he was like oh
thanks thanks this is really disappointing taking that woolly jump that's some admitted
yeah and you could tell this is a parent thing because i do it now with alice it's like oh what
what's what's that behind the settee i mean oh yeah he looked over he just went ballistic
but then they brought something out for me of what was it because i was like well
sign you will he was getting one and yeah keep it quiet if he's playing music because
you didn't have radios or there's no spotify or he didn't have like mp3 players did you he had
a walk man nothing part well there maybe if you're lucky but then he had to change batteries all
the time through last about as long as a cassette but then guess what i got a music thing as well
would you get in my head it was a ghetto blaster that's what they are ghetto blaster
but in reality it was a double tape player from dixon's oh well that's it yeah well i had a
spectrum do you copy games copy games oh amazing changed my life and i think we were happy with
probably a lot less back then well i wasn't as commercialized we were far from you were both
grew up in keithley yeah arguably one of the poorest areas of the country certainly maybe even
still today i don't know um yeah slow down genius and arguably one of the poorest areas of the
country and we we had we didn't yeah in my head we didn't want for anything but i could i could
only pick one present yeah a big you got a big present you got to choose that and your little
presence yeah i think the fact that you say oh can you have this or this or this or this and one
of them will turn up but i always get every year without fail a board game yeah and you know risk
yeah it's strategic yeah um we did that memory in there have you ever say just sitting down and
playing a new board game yeah and another thing again this is i don't know why it's christmas
related to us maybe it's because everyone was over but we always play trivial pursue yeah
to this day i every time i see the box because he hasn't changed no it's just yeah it's a christmas
game back to christmas um and board games are definitely one of those because do you know what
it is i think i think it's a time where normally you don't really have a couple of hours for two
three hours to put into a board game no on regularly in life life gets in the way yeah but at christmas
when you've both got time off or you've all got time off you haven't got to worry about work you
haven't got deadlines or anything you can go i don't know what i'm gonna spend three hours playing
this game and then have a fight at the end of monopoly monopoly here when someone's won for
cheating the banker always wins don't they because there's some money game of life what are the board
games can you remember because you know what i also oh i can't believe i forgot this christmas
i don't even know if this exists anymore thursday every thursday evening Thursday late night
shopping oh yeah yeah yeah does it exist i think it does everything's just doesn't it doesn't sit
city centers i think but it used to be a massive thing didn't it where oh yeah can't send you to
the town centers a bit of nostalgia there for you and we used to go to remember conways yeah yeah
conway shop toy shop in keithle um that i worked in yeah um which were brilliant but i always remember
now looking at the shelf after shelf of different board games are going wonder yeah and that again
that was another christmas thing because of course you've got all the christmas songs playing on repeat
um in this in this shops but yeah what what did you wear these what board games see the
areas remember board games like we had a lot of like quick board games so we got um battleships or
ghosts going house thing haunted house thing where you had to put a ghost over yeah and then it came
down and caught you mousetrap i remember i got mousetrap i thought mousetrap was amazing kaplunk
kaplunk yeah uh what's the one with the book of roof where you got to put things on the back of
the donkey and it kicks i remember quite a few years ago i got risk um on the ipad all right purely
because i remember playing it so much um and you know what i used to play it half the time because
my brother were like six and a half years older than me he was in a different maturity level should
we say um i played risk by myself you know when you're like yes it was die space game and you
could it was that strategic did you ever used to get um stockings to open up on christmas day
not really i mean i think i guess we did but i can't remember any so i don't think it was a big
deal but we probably did um we used to get we used to get quite a lot through through you know
with stockings as a member of the on christmas eve because you can't sleep as a kid can you and you
know every every like 10 minutes come the 10 o'clock you'd be going out saying it's something
you're alive yeah then you probably wake up at four in the morning you go out onto landing and
stockings were pinned up yeah and there was the uh the food you'd left out had gone
class of sherry had disappeared you're like he's been he's been there's just your dad's eating on
his way to bed yeah i remember my dad once um and i've copied this as well with alice when she
was younger got basically cat poo um because we had cat got cat poo and scattered it on the garden
you know when if it if it snows you can see it like oh reindeer's are pooed in the garden oh
little things you do but as a kid that is like in your head it's real isn't it oh yes he's been
he's been the the reindeer's pooed in my garden you tell him you're based about it of course the
thing is right it's like you've got to be open honest with your kids apart from Santa the two fairy
never takes sweets from a stranger apart from uh on halloween when you can take sweets from a
stranger that's all right yeah yeah yeah you go around to the house for that never sit on a man's
knee here's santa oh sabootio are you still sabootio i used to i used to get that because
that is how i learn genuinely that is how i learned how to iron yeah yeah because you had to iron
because it was folded up wasn't it so you have to iron the pitch and another thing as well which
instantly takes me back to maybe early teens christmas yeah it involved electricity is it i
was going to say scale electric scale extra yeah i got scale electrics one christmas and that was it
just the smell of that electric motor when you first turned it on it smells like it's burning
did you used to just slightly lift up the car and then so it was still on the metal but the tires
weren't quite touchy and then do a burn out yeah i used to i used to put salatate on the rear wheels
and then it'd fly off into into your grandma's leg or something and then let's get the train
set as well and that was just like i never had a trip set i was absolutely made up for non snow i
did when i was really young yeah and it puffed out a little bit of smoke from the top of it
i don't know how oil in the bands nowadays it would be you know cancerous but back then
lead paint yes here lead paint but the hairs on your chest and that's the thing i'd get usually
like one lego thing and lego back then wasn't what it is now in terms of it looks a little bit
was just lego now everything's a box isn't it in terms of you make a house you make a car
we just got lego and then you had to invent your own spaceship or something and i was building
so go to smash you and then when you're older lego technique i yeah i had some really good lego
technique stuff i got a car once and it was like uh oh it's probably more of a truck thing because
it had real steering wow so it had six wheels and the front's turned and the rear is where it
added like a steering wheel on top of it it was a tyre so i remember very plainly because we used
the dining room table which only was used a posh oh yes and it had a sheet over it and then what
was like a massive sheet doily yeah make it look posh and i was i cleared the table and i was basically
running in circles around this table driving yeah yeah yeah with the technique um and that was it for
hours on end i got a lego technique crane and it had pneumatics to lift it up wow you had to pump
a little pump on there yeah i said that it is it thing is it's just the engineer and isn't it
he's love that sort of stuff i never got into mccano i i got some mccano i just found it very
i think you're either lego or mccano right yeah i was very much a preferred lego
mccano never did what i wanted it to do we had a massive tuba lego when i said tuba it was
it was a chest uh and i had to ask permission um yeah can i get the lego out what do you mean
can i tip it out yeah yeah yeah all over the kick the living room floor because it was
because you'd have to sift through it finding the tour or the fora oh if you had to
use your teeth to separate them yeah how i didn't chip my teeth is yeah is beyond me um the largest
manufacturer tell you yes lego lego yeah but it was more of a tip it's like i i i miss being
able to buy alice because we've never had that an album or a film yeah because everything's just on
tap now which is your airplane blockbuster uh video oh god yeah it's right up wasn't it
like i was just playing we were fucking through netflix the other night and disney plus
and i was i said to adar i said when we were little you went to a shop and you bought you but you
rented the film if i were a knight and i'd take it back the next day off off too yeah i had to find
some photographs of blockbuster and if it if all the tips are gone you that's it yeah you can tell
when the new film came out because it would just the case i remember spending longer than the film
was looking for a film looking for a film yeah no that was too but i remember going to you remember
choices how is your yeah yeah going to choices video probably on christmas eve or maybe the day
before christmas eve because it's short isn't it christmas eve which is maybe even boxing day
so you got them for four days and it was no extra because much four times yeah and then if you got
one of those uh dual vhs make a copy but that's another thing going back to the radio times
you'd circle films because it was the only way other than buying the the vhs film the only way you
could get one was to view card chicken was to card but with the adverts well yeah it was on the itv
ultimately a film i remember looking this up because i didn't believe it until i checked it
the film would come out in the cinema yeah and then it'd be about nine months later maybe a year
before it'd be on rental yeah and then it'd be about four year old maybe five years old before it
would appear on telly yeah it was a long when it was at the cinema yeah so you're getting films that
were out a few years before seems so weird to me now when you watch a disney film with the cinema
and then a couple of months later is on disney plus yeah or just straight on to streaming yeah
yes but but the fact that you could you'd save up or you'd ask it for your birthday for an album
does it kind of rob you a little bit of a well there's no collection for example there's no
collection though that the thing is we Spotify it's an amazing thing is Spotify but i sometimes feel
that when you've got the choice of listening to anything you spend more time wondering what you
should listen to it's like two or three CDs or two or three albums you just listen to it wouldn't
you yeah you'd say what album should i listen to oh you'd borrow albums off your mate yeah
oh you've got that album can i borrow it so i can copy it what i tell you the foot
sort of like that i look for sometimes through Netflix and i go i can't think about
and i'll switch over to like ipv and it's a film on i'm going oh yeah like you just watch what's there
is there once what you can watch on demand and although they do happen now i don't feel there
is a bigger deal can you imagine i'd rather can you remember how massive christmas specials were
like only fools are not yes we were talking 26 half the population would watch that your entire
family sat in front of the tv they were like seven o'clock that's when there was a genuine spike
in the power grid wasn't there yeah at the adverts yeah but yeah christmas you say that the christmas
specials were huge won't they unbelievable 20 odd million people you had more common wise and things
like that i mean i remember them being kind of like the the pinnacle you'd have your christmas film
during the afternoon you'd be sitting watching that after you'd eaten too much and then you'd be
allowed to stay up and watch you know a christmas special and that almost being the highlight of
the day another one you'd have to wait and watch the one hour long special on christmas day to find
out what was at number one on top of the pot yeah top of the pops who's this year's christmas number
one and now it means nothing that's why even again now when i hear the song it always makes me
think of christmas meatloaf i would do anything for love because it was a christmas number one
from the ages um and and that sort of christmas song but yeah that was massive though wasn't it
whoever got to christmas number one was a huge deal well i think the thing is is i'd spoken to some
people about christmas number ones and you make money for christmas number one for the rest of
your life because it's it's it's all over christmas well that's what that film about a boy though it
was about essentially wasn't it i don't know if you've seen it but about a boy he's uh there's a guy
which is Hugh Grant yeah and his dad uh wrote a christmas song so basically he never worked he just
had money because every christmas he'd get yeah royalties well it's the Mariah Carey thing isn't
it he comes out every christmas because you know that's that's most of the earnings that
but yeah it it there were events i guess on christmas day wasn't there yeah like you said that
the films the big christmas specials i think it was because of a lack of choice oh yeah you got
four channels but their quality was a lot higher yeah there were more people watching these channels
there for there was more money to go towards it yeah yeah yeah yeah now now now i bet more people
watch youtube on christmas day than tv tv oh you remember kids would be playing roblox christmas
and in some ways that is better but in other ways getting round the tv or even further back the radio
i guess it was both family event wasn't it even though you weren't talking to each other at least
you're all sat there yeah and then you talk about it afterwards and then you know what when you go see
your mates you oh did you watch son so oh we recorded it yeah or you missed it and that was it yeah
watch it again part of none of the funny things that people were saying to you the catchphrases
top of the pot wow you used to record um the top 40 on radio once yeah songs because i remember i
read something once that said the person whose voice has been heard the most in the i guess the
uk maybe not the world was not bruno brux but basically the guy who did top 40 for the longest
because there's so many people recording the top 40 and you just catch the bigger and that was number
five at son everyone would be repeated lists that over and over again because what a horse
press on your on your mix plate yeah mixed desk the first pause we record it that's it that's the
only way you got chewed on it thing is that was music piracy it was like in the 80s was genuinely
and then you got the the the tapes or you got long play tapes yeah 60 minutes yeah do you
remember getting a video from like uh blockbuster our choices and get it home and the tracking being
out and then you took it back there and you have like 2000 pound uh vhs player and you put it in it
looked like a dvd yeah like oh yeah and you got fined if you did rewind the tape yeah you did
yeah yeah you had to rewind it didn't even got to the end but little things like let's go out and
get a fill it was a bit of a special event wasn't it you had to choose maybe a weekend and then
it's like well who's going to pick it this this week yeah and it'd be whatever's there
oh because that's come out and you'd reserve it wouldn't you yeah you could reserve a thing
here for saturday please so i can come and pick the table and go home and watch it yeah
wow things have changed we sound very old now it's better but it's also i missed some of it
do you remember when you got to that age i tell you what what was your first did you ever get a
console for christmas not for christmas because i was always i was always a spectrum and then i
went on to an amiga i did but we won that the olv fun one did you ever get like a game for christmas
or something like that of course and then you and then that's it your parents wouldn't see you
no you'd be like i was ready and you're so inconvenient i can't believe i've got to have
dinner now and thing is you'd have to tell them what game you wanted yeah and they'd have to go
and buy it but they won't give it to you until christmas oh it was annoying you knew you needed
to have it and then there was no way of pausing it but yeah i'm saving it so you could pause it
and just leave it on permanent yeah you wouldn't see me for for days yeah even if it wasn't a new
game i'd probably be doing that and another woman down like you're in shock yeah but when you go to
like when we were what 12 up 13 40 remember on christmas day unboxing day you had free local calls
which meant free internet free internet dial-up yeah
so i was on that all the time which meant we never got a phone call because
i were playing an online game over dial-up and how did that even work but i remember you're
like going pew pew pew pew and then your character goes the the the the the the the the the the the
yeah yeah yeah mom is having a seizure phone down what's that nice phone down i'm playing the game
well i need to ring your grandma put you know put that i'm off we're through it
so inconsiderate and the speeds because everyone's doing the same we're appalling yeah yeah but no i
do i do miss christmas at home and mostly it's the people isn't it it's your family that you don't
you know so i hear any luck do you think most people look back at the christmas christmas is
like that because it was i mean it's still i still i love christmas it's it's still a
time of the year for me but that thing of when you were a kid you get a present that you couldn't
even dream of have been afforded to buy yours yeah save my pocket money for a year i'm not
going to be able to afford to get this yeah it's it it's ruined a little bit now because
it's either something you get all the time because it's for an xbox game pass yeah or
it's like well if it's 10 or i'll just buy it now what i've done this year is for the majority
of my presents is rather than buy them a physical thing i bought everyone experiences oh yeah because
i'm like people people have got enough stuff i don't know what people want is i think about
trying you know and then if you ask them they know what they're getting so getting somebody in
experience where they're doing something for a day it's a good art because my mum's recently had a
80th birthday and that was skydive a month ago and of course mum's been mum's and my dad did this
year before with his 80s i don't want no no that you know they've got a small flat we haven't got
any room for stuff junk so basically i don't want no don't don't buy as old you know maybe an odd
drink yeah get us food when you come a bit then mind we have to travel 250 miles to visit them
so for a birthday we all went down my brother and his mrs came up and some of her friends because
we all lived on the same street yeah um some of her friends she hadn't seen for a few years
they went they came down as well to Clapton and surprised her oh wow they actually didn't know
and that for me was better would better than any present i could get yeah um or we i think that's
it sometimes i think creating the memory yeah rather than just going saying there you are there's
something just surprising someone is and hello thought we'd turn open surprise it because like
you say it it's it's there's not really a gift now no the average because you just if you want
something you go buy it in my brother i've got a rule that we don't buy anything for each other
because if you want to buy something we're both old enough we do the same yeah my mum's like i'll
get you something like mum look i can reasonably afford anything that's a wand it will be a present
that you buy me but i don't want you to get me anything you know the only things i haven't got
like i haven't got a posh but i don't you know i would not expect anybody ever to get me a portion
yeah i mean years ago we remember we said the same thing because he's down south as well yeah
there's no point in you spending 20 30 quid on me for me to then spend 20 30 quid on you on something
you don't really want yeah just go out and buy yourself something yeah so we we haven't bought
each other a present for years because yeah like you say there's nothing you can a kid a computer
games a big thing oh yeah six months worth of serving up yeah or it used to be anyway um so
that was a big deal but now it yeah it's not so old it's more special because of your own kids
that that's there isn't it you get to see it from the other end you're the one that's sneaking downstairs
when they're asleep i'm trying to put in the presents how have you ever thought about because
not that ever been caught but what would have happened if you've been caught taking presents
still well you'd have to get that red pen off of uh men in black well wait what dish well yeah
exactly i mean i hope you know i i i'm trying to remember what we did in first house i mean when
the young young eggs not problem you know they're asleep but when they're like six seven eight
literally they can hear you walking at your door for especially on that night like a pin drops
the like is he i used to put stuff in the garage as i just bring it and so i wouldn't be you know so
she won't see anything if you walked out um or you'd i just hold on to the door and then launa
would run downstairs i remember we used to buy buying presents i used to put them on top of
my wardrobe in the bedroom and as a child she'd never been it's bigger out there between
september and christmas this pile of their boxes would get bigger never pointed and asked
what's that on there what's that yeah hey look that's you look yeah we're under the
close to the airbase our air is finally not memorable sorry there with the golf balls
uh so no yeah so let's go back pick something like your tins as roses in quality streets what
takes you back to an 80s or even 90s christmas that we have on the mix of ideas i can't believe
we've forgotten this the christmas decorations the tinsely stuff you'd have hanging from the
ceilings that you've still got now your mum's still got the search notifications now but the
christmas decorations of the 80s where it was just plastic everything and you used to put i remember
on stream on our big wall it was like um a holder that went across half the wall where you put
christmas cards you don't you don't really do christmas cards anymore no i mean i don't like
christ i don't see the point in them for people you see regularly if it's someone that lives
you know like oh i don't see you very often yes send a christmas card just checking in i'm still alive
but if i going round to imagine if i went to your house on christmas day and give you a christmas
card i can't say happy christmas i don't need to give you a card um but i think that's a dad's
thing just saving money i think it is yeah i think it's well for women's finger christmas
being very very gemual here do you remember the uh you only had them proper christmas lights that
you had to take unscrew a bulb from oh god if only from when yeah because there were no leds
how many lights have you got on this it'd be 80 it'd be a lot and you'd be going on the bulb
to yeah yeah yeah because there were bulbs i bet there were three kilowatts running through there
yeah that's why your dad turned them off at night because of the fortune because the fortune
i remember one going and my dad being there thought it seemed like forever
trying to figure out what they were and then you had the spare bulbs that were always white
so after a while you just have a white christmas tree lights christmas time was the only
period we were allowed and i want that fond of it to be fair but i i always ask for it to have
squirty creve oh yeah as it wasn't proper crea uh it's like no no it's rubbish cream get down
something but i can go into to my mouths i think as well christmas and new year is my first memories
of when i'm being young are being allowed to stay up late yeah and what you consider will
you know 9th 30 yeah 10th wow best good until you fall asleep yeah as long as you are well behaved
and then uh so what what was your first i was allowed a little bit of wine
um when i've said like just to taste when it was like probably 10 11 12 or something
when we had a big meal but what was your first i can remember the drink drink
but usually a christmas i got a little i guess you know where to be there'd be a shandy
yeah shandy's absolutely my first proper drink at christmas had it been 13
and uh there was a bottle of jameson's on the christmas dinner table
i was like that looks all right oof i had a little bit but i was like whoa this is you know
awful yeah who drinks this this is awful everybody else drinking it seems we rather
sophisticated and smoking the cigar i was like i need to feign with these people yeah yeah no yeah
well yeah shandy i i love chat day do you know what i like a shandy even to this day
it's nice in the summer's day do you know when you think i don't really i'm not bothered for
yeah i just want something more slightly more refreshing yeah any better and alice uh used
to like a shandy still does to a point she's into gin now gin where where where's a jump from i just
yeah because you know it's leaving no brands of it do you know why you're she's going to have to
last christmas because of the christmas party works party because i was driving we had loads of
money behind the bar to use up yeah and i went okay um what's the most expensive non-alcoholic
drink you've got and they add the non-alcoholic uh wet lit wet the gin and something and obviously i
said well you do you want to try it and she went oh this is nice is it he was like he was
lemonade and gin as well yeah and it was a raspberry or blueberry or whatever purple
jarry so for the next six months or so she'd have the occasional gin for the non-alcoholic
yes but now she started on just the normal one because she's she's 15 yeah um and she doesn't
really touch it much but i'm like i want to make sure and she always had a bit of shandy
occasionally that she doesn't see alcohol as something that's she does when you're not there
or when you're yeah yeah like anything is uh you've got to make especially especially in the UK
you've got to make it normal haven't you and you know you don't want somebody going out i mean
it's not as much as the thing as it was when we were a kid but people going out to park and
having a think a bit of white lightning bit of 2020 thunderbird bloom them
so no i do miss our christmas but again i guess it's the stulture rather i think it is it probably
wasn't as good again if you if you revisited it you'd be like what is this so it'd be like
revisiting your first car oh yeah you'd get in it and you'd be like god this is awful but when
you get it you were like this opens so many doors it was a car didn't matter what it was like
go to the seaside what was the uh the biggest present you got because obviously it tails off
at some point i remember getting a bike which for the moment dad would have been quite expensive at
the time i remember getting the bike and i remember that we had to start saving for it and
going down to the shop and paying for it in bits oh yeah in like in like summer and it took that
long to get it i think my biggest ones might have been like a mega drive i think i got maybe a mega
drive for christmas but i can't remember if i got that some other time he's reminding me of one
so oh i can't i'm guessing i was probably nine ten eleven something like that uh i had one that
was hand-built i won't tell you what it is yet but for christmas i got it was black it had a uh
joined on uh cassette player part of the keyboard it's going to be oh an amiga spectrum z-expective
128k wow so i had the pre precursor to that the elite with it in the elite oh unless oh of the
elite we had to try and land basically it was like the first thing you bought was the auto pilot
for the landing of the space it was the world's worst polygraph but in my head i mean polygons not
polygons yeah i was in space playing that i had a 14 inch screen and you could go anywhere
you could literally any any any planet name and you'd trade wouldn't you but no yeah z-expectrum
again i was playing the same games on the same operating system if you will that that's it
for the next week i'm i'm i'm i'm done i'm just playing games constantly
and that's when you had to play games for the alas that's the original sim city sort of thing
i bet your parents were like i got sim city once for christmas like i you know it was like i'd moved
out i can imagine my parents going where is it it's 35 quiddies this is quite a lot of money
in back in them days they probably about seven five by then though was it i think it being 30
35 quiddies in a city wow they're probably about what 70 80 quid probably in real today so yeah
but imagine your parents going yeah but we won't see him till like february all right i mean little
did they realize it was sim city they wouldn't see you until february 2024 yeah uh because you're
playing it can you complete this game you not really know oh right how'd you win and again in
my head that was a city it was yeah and then something and then the very tornado coming wipe
out your infrastructure oh you've just yeah gutted oh yeah yeah i miss that sort of you know that
that's something i miss from my childhood which as a computer geek i spent a lot of it doing it
spending hours on end playing the same game yeah you could do though because you had all
the time in the world i remember me and craig weren't to lead so probably about 15 by that point
and i bought which was a new game at the time half life oh yeah wow and that at the time was
epic it was mind numbing the good from a not what's a i but you know it was interactive it was
yeah the story of it it was truly groundbreaking is the word i'm looking for we started playing
that problem we got back from leaf let's say it was four o'clock in the afternoon you know what
time craig left wednesday half past four yeah in the morning we never went to sleep i remember i
can see him walking out of my drive this day after playing that and it was daylight again yeah because
winter and i kind of missed not having enough time to basically just sit there for hours on end
i'd waste it on a computer game there's an evil they're playing that over christmas and just
playing it from when we woke up in the morning again until like one two in the morning yeah and
if you got your mates around if you were like two players i remember even dreaming it you know i i
don't know why this is and re-entered my mind but something that i uh so we say went through a few
keyboards on the spectrum playing daily thompson daily thompson's decathlon yeah if you scrolled
out the keyboard we used to have them go and yeah yeah and then you'd end up with no skin yeah or
yeah and the the n and the m key was always worn off yeah you'd always tell anybody that played
daily thompson's decathlon but like nowadays where it's Nigel on mine at n so no yeah yeah
nostalgia but as i know i think christmas now is it's about your kids in it but now when now
alice is 15 it's it's just a week of school it is yeah um so i don't know if that's a good thing or a
bad thing um i still quite like the when you start hearing the music and the little things that that
the things are back there and the food of course the things i don't like about christmas nowadays
and maybe it wasn't any different when we were younger it's just when you go into a shop in
august oh and there's crackers there yeah too soon too soon and you go in i don't mind getting the
christmas spirit you know from when it gets colder i'd say let's get uh let's get bonfire night out
of the way well why do we end the podcast on this final question so i have a hard and fast rule in our
house no christmas decorations until we hit december oh i've broken that already so out of the four
trees we've got four yep three are up already how many of them have you had for like at least a decade
well none at the moment because i've just spent 500 pounds on christmas trees
what yep they're very nice christmas trees and they'll last a very long time
on on a really full size one's eight foot and two five foot trees wow the eight foot tree was
range of quid it looks very real well in a unique uh thing i guess you've you know because of the
house fire if i've lost all my childhood all the christmas decorations yeah all the ones that the
kids make because i've still got a decoration that my brother knitted at primary school i
mind he's seven years older than me so that was my mum's and do you ever go you knitted this well
yeah well but that that did it and bud i guess you've lost all that yeah that would do out of
everything that's probably like one of the most i mean clothes and stuff i've missed a lot of my
clothes yeah but you can always rebuy them but honestly the christmas decorations over 20 years
and some of the barbels will you know do you know when you go with kids and they go because they have
this one and he's quite an expensive he's like 10 or 15 quid and he's a one off sort of one
i bet there's close to a thousand pounds worth of christmas he's just this is just just got
up in flames and melted so yeah it's it's uh if you're placing them slowly well yeah i guess it
sounds ridiculous spending all that on christmas decorations but when you've got none
yeah the heart with that's not here's your first christmas without after the fire yeah yeah yeah
yeah so you got to go you got to replace it oh yeah in bit but do you do enough just to fill
the trees and then i must admit i did go slight the crazy one christmas with led lights about 10
years ago i bought oh it must have been six lights and when i said lights some of them were like 20
foot outside lights oh you mean he did the whole outsidey thing yeah but i bought them all unboxing
there like at b and q and they were about 15 percent of the price the original price
it was like four quid each instead of 40 yeah they'll give them away um so i just went i'll have
that i'll have that i'll have that i won't use them for a year but there you are
yorksman you see that's like it's worth buying hose pipes now with a hose pipe bag
hose pipe bag in winter or if you want any outside um furniture yeah no i hadn't finished
it's earth time to buy my convertible was that convertible yeah that was very true uh but no i
yeah christmas decorations we will be getting ours out for shortly i suppose i think it's the
first week ending december when should we're all available i usually used to do the first uh around
the first of december but now we just i think that it was yeah just sunday just gone so kind of the
end-ish middle end-ish in november well you've got to i think there's a reason for you to celebrate
it better than the normal in they would we didn't put the main fire there's two in two in two of
the kids bedrooms and there's one on the landing did you use to put the presents actually under
the tree um so my daughter's presents to stay upstairs and come down on christmas eve but if
somebody came round with presents because that was always interesting they'd come round and go and
there's a present for isabel and i go all right yes send that to santa we'll put it under a tree
and it magically go to santa right so before we're doing the podcast properly again did your
mum or dad ever do this you know if you were maybe misbehaving in december maybe right right
that's it you know the dial phone oh yeah so you obviously didn't know this at the time but
pick the phone up one step i think my dad or mum or problem my dad pick the phone up and
obviously just kept your finger on the uh oh yeah yeah receiver so it didn't absolutely
add to it yeah hello it pretended out hello is that santa yep yeah it's it's about andrew
as a dad that is brilliant did you ever use the app on your phone the santa app
oh have you been naughty at the time good alice remember the first time during that
like that have you got santa on your phone but you got a video didn't you yeah you got video
that's clever i do like that i think that that is very personalized video from santa and the norad
yeah tracking santa on the yeah yeah anyway let's receive you do that on google maps though can
you yeah you can follow santa on google maps so yeah all right any any last memories are things
that were and no longer like your quality streets and stuff and yeah and yeah i think the thing is
you can get a good piece now but it's just the the the tin's not as big is it and you're probably
paying an extortionate amount of money for it did you have a quality street or roses tin that then
became where you put all the screws and nuts and bolts because it was a mess yeah you kept it for
everything we always put our mince pies in one of them yeah no no that that tin had last generations
i'm sure i was handed down from back one of them did come from my my uh grandma yeah when she died
and that's what she always brought they've been spying yeah the roses tin because it was
even there's solid metal it's fuzzy it's not gonna work so much you know hand that back yeah
uh well ah a trip down memory lane yeah we go i hope you enjoyed that and maybe imagine if when
you were a child there's bound to be some stuff we've said that has just sparked a memory in your

the radio time thing circling the film user uh yeah the puddings that you only had a Christmas
and the teas and the drinks and the family yeah see i never had a we always had a small family
no aunties no uncles only one grandma yeah she died when about 12ish um so we never had like
tons of those around we're the yeah some people around but our family wasn't massive but is it
about the only time of year where you got to see everybody in one place yeah so no i do
enjoy christmas still yeah maybe it's also because that's when work winds down and you get a bit of
time off please genuine time off as well isn't it yeah things don't open over that yeah and do you miss
boxing day sales when they actually were boxing day sales you know what i never used to go to a
we rarely went out but there were there were times when i remember once twice in my life
where you'd go to like a furniture warehouse because they were getting a say in there or
something like that and it would be like yeah so your mum and dad you'd have to go there there
and and get it um but let's face these are the days when you would get a bag in holiday on um
c fax yeah best place to get a holiday only say fax yeah telly text even to this day my mum says
i've sent you a telly text by on the phone yeah she calls them telly texts go thanks mum yeah
um oh i have to ask this i know we're keeping saying we're ending it but
does your mum or dad because presumably of their age you say right i'm setting up five minutes i'll
be there uh in in in about 20 minutes okay yeah you don't have to say okay it's fine
every message that gets a reply back yeah okay Roger you don't have to reply and i'm just letting
