00:00
On this week's episode of Ride the Lightning,
00:02
the Tesla and EV podcast,
00:04
new evidence suggests Tesla's RoboTaxi network
00:07
is about to roll out in two more Southwestern U.S. states.
00:12
Plus, using non-Tesla chargers is about to get easier
00:16
for Tesla owners in a new pilot program.
00:19
Tesla Energy unveils the mega block and more.
00:22
["Castle in the Sky"]
00:43
What's happening, friends?
00:44
I'm Ryan McCaffery, alongside Daisy the Boxer
00:46
and Lily, the giant baby Labrador.
00:49
She's up to 58 pounds.
00:52
This is Ride the Lightning, your weekly Tesla and EV podcast
00:56
publishing on September 14th, 2015.
01:00
I'm recording it as usual on Friday evening here, September 12th.
01:04
Well, hopefully you won't be able to tell
01:07
over the course of the episode, but I am exhausted today.
01:11
I got up at 5 a.m. on purpose to pre-order the new iPhone.
01:16
It's the first new phone I've gotten in five years.
01:19
So I'm like, all right, it's time.
01:21
And I guess I want it on launch day,
01:23
so I better get up right at the pre-order time.
01:25
And sure enough, it was some pre-order chaos.
01:28
So that's done, at least that's all secured.
01:32
But I couldn't get back to sleep.
01:34
I thought, okay, I can just get up, pre-order it,
01:37
go back to sleep, didn't happen.
01:39
So here we are, I'm running on fumes,
01:42
but hopefully you won't be able to tell.
01:45
No, I've got enough energy for Ride the Lightning
01:47
because I always have a blast doing this podcast.
01:50
And you all are so super supportive.
01:52
So let's get started.
01:55
First up this week is the headline story.
01:58
This should not surprise any of you
02:00
who've been following along with all of this
02:03
in the last number of weeks and months.
02:05
But it looks like we know the next two markets
02:09
that Tesla's Robotaxi Network will be activating in next
02:14
and seemingly soon in both cases.
02:17
We start in my, not my home state,
02:21
New Jersey's my home state,
02:22
but the state I grew up in for the most part,
02:24
that would be Arizona, the Phoenix area.
02:27
X user Adub0808 posted a video of a new Model Y
02:35
on the freeway in Tempe, Arizona.
02:38
Couldn't tell if it was the 60 or maybe 101.
02:41
But anyway, Tempe, Arizona,
02:45
which is a suburb of Phoenix,
02:46
part of the greater Phoenix area.
02:47
It's also where I went to college
02:49
at Arizona State University.
02:50
But anyway, that Model Y had obvious self-driving
02:55
testing equipment on the roof of it.
02:57
We've seen Model Ys with this before in other places,
03:01
giving us a very strong hint that the Robotaxi
03:04
will be coming to the Sonoran Desert and fairly soon.
03:09
Of course, again, this is no surprise
03:11
because Arizona has already been mentioned by Tesla
03:15
as being on their short list.
03:18
Plus, Waymo's already there.
03:20
Thus, the way has been paved a bit, figuratively speaking,
03:24
at least in regulatory terms.
03:26
So if you are a listener of mine
03:29
in the Phoenix metro area, get psyched
03:32
because you may very soon have access
03:36
to the Robotaxi network.
03:38
So the other state that we got wind of this week,
03:41
or at least some evidence of, is Nevada.
03:46
Likely Las Vegas, but we don't know which city for sure.
03:50
Reno is definitely on the table.
03:52
It is a possibility, given Tesla's presence there.
03:55
And this comes from our Tesla tipster friend,
03:58
Sawyer Merritt, who posted on X saying, quote,
04:01
Tesla has officially received approval
04:04
from the Nevada DMV to start testing autonomous vehicles,
04:09
AKA Robotaxi's, on public roads.
04:12
He says, I confirmed directly with the Nevada DMV
04:16
that Tesla's application
04:18
to obtain a testing registry certification
04:21
was approved by the DMV office of business licensing team.
04:27
Autonomous plates and the registry certificate
04:30
were also sent back out to Tesla this week.
04:34
Next, to officially start offering Robotaxi rides
04:37
to the public in Nevada,
04:39
Tesla will need to complete the self certification
04:42
for operations, that's the last step
04:46
to roll out a service similar to the one
04:48
they currently operate in Austin, Texas,
04:50
where there is no one in the driver's seat.
04:52
This approval shouldn't be difficult to get,
04:55
posits Mr. Merritt.
04:58
So Phoenix and hopefully Viva Las Vegas,
05:03
quite soon in terms of Robotaxi, presumably.
05:06
And that's all great news, the rollout is happening.
05:10
I don't know, I mean, for something like this,
05:14
I guess there's no real playbook or rulebook for it.
05:18
The rules are kind of being written
05:20
as we go along in terms of the technology
05:23
and how quickly it can roll out.
05:24
I guess all we really have to go off of is Waymo.
05:28
Like Waymo was the first to actually get into the market
05:34
to actually offer it to anybody, to a regular customer.
05:39
And it seemed like Waymo's process
05:42
was a lot slower and more deliberate
05:44
in terms of rolling out to additional markets.
05:47
And that's probably because they have a very
05:50
hyper specialized solution to their self driving system
05:55
whereas Tesla, as we know,
05:57
has developed a generalized AI solution
06:00
so that it can work pretty much anywhere pretty quickly.
06:04
And we are seeing that now.
06:06
Austin and then not too long after,
06:10
here in the San Francisco Bay Area.
06:12
And now Phoenix appears to be next
06:15
as well as somewhere in Nevada
06:18
I would put my money on Las Vegas.
06:22
Speaking for myself, I took three Robotaxi rides
06:26
this week and I will tell you all about those
06:29
later in the podcast when we get to the part of the show
06:32
near the end where I just tell you about
06:34
what I've been up to with my Teslas
06:37
because I don't wanna waste any more time.
06:39
We've got a million things to get to
06:41
on this week's episode of Ride the Lightning.
06:43
And I will go next here, which is
06:47
as a follow up to last week
06:49
when I was talking about potential successors
06:52
for Elon Musk, since he and the board
06:55
have formally put succession planning
06:57
into his proposed new compensation package.
07:01
Long time loyal listener, Anthony Helmstetter,
07:04
suggested this week's Patreon poll on that topic
07:08
which asked you for your thoughts
07:10
on who you'd like to see be at the top
07:13
of that next in line list.
07:17
And so the poll had four choices
07:22
plus a fifth other choice.
07:24
And then in the comments, there were a couple
07:26
of really excellent suggestions
07:28
that I wish I had included in the main poll.
07:31
But of the four choices other than other,
07:35
55% of you voted for J.B. Straubel
07:39
who of course is a Tesla co-founder,
07:41
the former chief technical officer of Tesla.
07:45
And you all remember him from my interview with him
07:47
back on episode 501.
07:50
Coming in second place in that poll
07:52
was Lars Moravy, another friend to Ride the Lightning.
07:55
Tesla's head of engineering, 31% of the vote for Lars.
08:00
And then I put Tesla's CFO in there,
08:03
he got 1% of the vote.
08:05
And Oshak Elloswamy, Tesla's VP of AI software
08:10
AKA the head of the FSD team,
08:12
I threw him on there as well,
08:14
given his engineering background
08:17
and knowledge of, intimate knowledge
08:19
of everything the company's doing
08:21
at an engineering level, he got 4% of the vote.
08:24
And then the couple of folks I wish I had included
08:27
in the poll, thank you to a number of commenters
08:30
who mentioned these in the comments.
08:32
There was Tom Zhu, who heads up,
08:36
well he had been heading up service for a bit.
08:38
Now I think he's back to logistics,
08:41
but he's basically the gentleman
08:43
that oversaw the development
08:46
and the very rapid development
08:48
and then the operations of Giga Shanghai,
08:52
which as we all know is Tesla's most,
08:57
let's see, what's the best word here?
08:59
Efficient, highest output factory.
09:03
And it's not even close, Giga Shanghai.
09:05
There were a number of commenters
09:07
that mentioned Tom Zhu,
09:09
Matt Kalin throughout Gwynne Shotwell,
09:12
who's running SpaceX alongside Elon.
09:14
I thought that's a great suggestion.
09:16
I don't know if she would wanna bounce over
09:18
from SpaceX to Tesla,
09:20
but in the event that something happened to Elon
09:24
or that Elon stepped down,
09:25
hopefully nothing happens to him,
09:28
I just mean like in terms of him retiring,
09:29
I don't mean any physical harm, certainly.
09:32
But Gwynne would, you would think she would be
09:36
the first in line to just assume
09:37
the CEO role at SpaceX
09:41
rather than bounce over to Tesla,
09:42
but that's not what this thought exercise is about.
09:45
So that's a good suggestion.
09:47
And then another good one I saw in here,
09:49
where to go, ah, Mike suggested Drew Baglino,
09:54
who left Tesla not too long ago.
09:56
He's working on power grid stuff now,
09:59
as Mike notes, could fold into Tesla's master plan,
10:02
but Drew was basically the battery boss,
10:06
the chief of all battery things at Tesla.
10:09
The primary person behind the development
10:12
of the 4680 battery cell.
10:14
So that is a good list from those of you on Patreon.
10:21
And again, for the Patreon poll,
10:23
you don't have to be giving me a dime,
10:25
you don't have to be supporting the podcast.
10:26
The poll is open to everybody every single week
10:29
to swing on by patreon.com slash Tesla podcast every week.
10:35
Typically the new poll goes up on Tuesday.
10:37
We had, let's see here,
10:39
almost 300 people vote in this week's poll.
10:42
So thank you to everybody that took the time
10:44
to stop by and cast your vote.
10:49
Tesla has discontinued the very short-lived,
10:54
long-range rear wheel drive trim of the Cybertruck.
10:59
I had to go back and look this up
11:00
to see exactly what the timeline was.
11:04
That truck was announced in April
11:07
and Tesla had said that deliveries of it began in June.
11:11
So for all intents and purposes,
11:13
it effectively lasted three months
11:17
in terms of the amount of time
11:19
they were actually delivering to people
11:22
and building that truck.
11:23
It had been $70,000 in case you needed a refresher there.
11:30
And as you all know,
11:32
it was also a pretty stripped down version
11:37
No to no cover, let alone a powered one.
11:40
No adjustable air suspension.
11:43
It had fabric seats
11:45
and those fabric seats didn't have
11:47
any ventilation cooling capability.
11:50
It had a lower payload, a lower towing capacity,
11:53
no second screen for the second row passengers,
11:57
a much slower zero to 60 time,
12:00
no bioweapon defense mode,
12:02
fewer speakers in the sound system,
12:05
no power outlets on the inside,
12:07
no power outlets in the bed,
12:11
and no light bar on the back either.
12:15
And I know I've said this before,
12:16
but now that it's officially discontinued
12:18
and more time has gone by since the last time I said this,
12:22
I'll say it again, cause it's still true.
12:24
I live in the very Tesla-tastic San Francisco Bay Area,
12:29
tons of Teslas here.
12:30
I see them every day of all varieties,
12:33
except the original Roadster.
12:35
That one's still a pretty rare sight.
12:37
But I see all five currently in production Teslas,
12:41
all the time, and I can honestly say I have literally,
12:45
it's no hyperbole, no exaggeration,
12:48
I've literally never seen a long range rear wheel drive
12:53
Cybertruck in person.
12:55
And they would be easy to spot even from a distance
12:58
due to the smaller and distinctly different wheel design
13:03
on them and the lack of tonneau cover on them as well.
13:07
So I didn't see a single one.
13:11
I'm sure eventually I'll see one,
13:13
but the whole time they've been in production
13:16
and been for sale, I did not see any of them.
13:19
I see plenty of Cybertrucks every day.
13:22
If I go out, take a drive anywhere,
13:25
I will see plenty of Cybertrucks,
13:27
but none of this long range rear wheel drive trim.
13:30
I mean, they seem now destined to join
13:34
the Model 3 mid-range as Tesla unicorn trims
13:39
of which not many must exist.
13:41
And if you're a relatively newer listener,
13:44
and I guess you don't even have to be a new listener
13:46
because the Model 3 mid-range was offered back
13:50
for a very short time in the fall of 2018.
13:54
So about exactly seven years ago,
13:57
Tesla offered this as a way to try
14:00
and get the price of the Model 3 down in the early going.
14:04
The mid-range trim and it,
14:08
I wanna say, I think it had a 260 mile range.
14:11
If there are any mid-range owners out there,
14:13
you can correct me.
14:14
I guess I could just Google it
14:15
after I'm done recording this,
14:16
but the mid-range did not last long.
14:19
There are not too many of them out there.
14:22
And again, I would call that a Tesla unicorn
14:25
and we can now, I think, pretty comfortably add
14:29
this variant of the Cybertruck
14:31
to the Tesla unicorn list as well.
14:34
I just can't imagine that very many people
14:37
at all bought them.
14:38
And not just because I haven't seen any of them,
14:41
but we know the overall numbers of the Cybertruck
14:45
and they are disappointing so far.
14:48
And granted, I will have to catch myself here,
14:53
price is the number one contributor
14:56
to that in my humble opinion
14:58
to the disappointing overall numbers of the Cybertruck.
15:01
And this truck did address the price very, very directly,
15:06
but as I said, back when this trim
15:09
was first unveiled in April,
15:11
for me it just took away way too much of that truck
15:15
in return for that lower price.
15:18
But I'll say to end this optimistically,
15:21
maybe Tesla's finally in a position to lower the price
15:26
of the existing awesome, fully featured dual motor Cybertruck
15:32
and maybe that's part of the reason
15:34
that they are getting rid of
15:36
the long range rear wheel drive trim.
15:39
And I do say part of the reason
15:42
because I suppose the end of the tax credit
15:46
must also be a contributing factor here
15:49
because obviously there will now be no motivation
15:52
for Tesla to sell a truck under $80,000
15:55
just to qualify for the tax credit
15:59
no matter how much stuff they had to strip out of it
16:03
to get it under that price point.
16:05
So we shall see, but that trim is now officially retired
16:15
Before I continue with this week's Tesla and EV news,
16:18
I wanted to mention this week's lightning round mini episode
16:22
that I do exclusively over on Patreon
16:24
for all of you kind souls
16:26
that are supporting the podcast over there.
16:28
You can head to patreon.com slash Tesla podcast.
16:33
There are a bunch of support tiers there
16:35
starting at just five bucks a month.
16:37
It's the $10 per month tier
16:39
that's the most popular one
16:40
probably because you get
16:43
all of these lightning round mini episodes.
16:46
and you also get the ad free episode
16:50
and early access to that ad free episode
16:53
that the $5 tier gets.
16:55
So this week's lightning round topic
16:58
was the five menu items that I would add
17:02
at the Tesla diner.
17:04
So I've had the privilege of going twice now
17:06
and these are the five things
17:08
that I would like to see added to the Tesla diner menu.
17:12
I'm looking forward to reading the comments on that
17:14
from people making their own suggestions
17:17
for what they'd like to add to that menu as well.
17:19
So again, if you'd like to join me on Patreon,
17:22
you'd be supporting the podcast
17:25
which again is free every week.
17:27
It always has been, it always will be
17:29
but if you'd like to support me
17:31
the Patreon is the way to do that
17:33
and whether you're pledging at the $5 per month tier
17:37
the $10 per month tier or higher
17:39
I try to offer some perks and bonuses
17:41
and ways to say thank you for your support
17:44
and that lightning round weekly mini episode
17:48
is the most popular way I do that statistically
17:51
based on how many people are at that tier on the Patreon.
17:55
So hopefully enjoy that
17:57
and all of the other 150 something of those lightning rounds.
18:01
So again, check it out if you get a chance
18:03
Patreon.com slash Tesla podcast
18:08
or just click the link in the episode description.
18:11
Next up this week, we have of course
18:13
already seen Tesla welcome in non-Tesla vehicles
18:17
to the Tesla Supercharging Network
18:20
and provide them a super easy way
18:22
to charge their vehicles
18:24
and pay for that juice through the Tesla app.
18:28
Well now Tesla is turning that around
18:31
and returning that favor of convenience to Tesla owners
18:35
and offering a new convenient way
18:38
to quickly and painlessly charge and pay
18:42
for Tesla owners at non-Tesla chargers.
18:46
Saw this on the official Tesla charging account
18:49
on X and they wrote introducing multi-pass
18:53
using your Tesla account to charge at non-Tesla chargers.
18:58
Simply activate your Tesla key card
19:00
or use the Tesla app to start charging
19:03
at non-Tesla chargers.
19:05
Find chargers, start charging
19:07
and view charging history
19:09
all in the same convenient location.
19:12
Live today for Tesla owners in the Netherlands
19:15
more sites and countries soon.
19:19
So I'm jealous of those of you
19:21
who are in the Netherlands that get to test this out.
19:24
Max Dazeager from the Tesla charging team
19:27
I've cited him here many times
19:28
because he is a frequent poster on X
19:32
talking about what the Tesla charging team is doing
19:34
and I very much appreciate him posting about that.
19:37
Well, Max posted a response to
19:40
that official announcement there saying
19:43
nobody likes creating more accounts
19:46
with payment details and passwords.
19:49
For charging, this can even mean
19:51
needing a third-party charging card
19:54
mailed to your house.
19:56
Starting in the Netherlands today,
19:58
meaning this past week,
20:00
your Tesla app and your existing Tesla key card
20:03
can start charging at third-party chargers.
20:07
We'll expand this to more countries quickly
20:09
if customers love it.
20:11
To make ownership effortless
20:13
the Tesla app should really be the only thing you need.
20:19
And my response to you, Max, is
20:23
you'll expand this to other countries
20:25
if customers love it.
20:28
How could they not love it?
20:29
Granted, I haven't used it,
20:31
but from that description,
20:33
I sure can't imagine how we wouldn't love it.
20:37
This just seems like a really smart,
20:40
really smart way to do this.
20:42
And finally, a tangible use
20:45
for my backup physical Tesla key card
20:48
that lives in my wallet.
20:49
And the thing is, if you don't carry a wallet,
20:52
if you're one of those folks, you're just totally digital,
20:55
you don't even have to use the Tesla key card
20:59
If you don't carry one,
21:00
you can just use the Tesla app as they noted.
21:04
Now, I admit, I personally do not use
21:07
third-party chargers very often at all.
21:11
In fact, really the only time I ever do,
21:14
it's on occasion and it's because
21:16
it's in a particular parking garage
21:18
near my favorite pizza place in San Francisco.
21:22
And the EV charging spaces in that parking garage
21:27
are nice and wide to help minimize the chance of door dings.
21:31
So I happily will plug in and pay to charge,
21:36
even though it would be cheaper to charge at home,
21:38
in exchange for getting that much wider parking spot.
21:41
And that particular spot is a ChargePoint post.
21:46
And so that's the one I can comment on having actually used.
21:49
And I'll say, ChargePoint, it's not the worst app to use,
21:54
but it's also a far cry from the ease and convenience
21:58
of the Tesla UI, the Tesla app.
22:02
So if Tesla can bring that or a version of it
22:06
to third-party chargers,
22:07
which that's exactly what they've done,
22:09
it only makes fast charging easier
22:12
and more convenient to everybody,
22:15
thereby removing some pain points
22:17
in the overall EV ecosystem,
22:20
which is a good thing for the entire EV movement,
22:24
So Max, if you're listening,
22:27
I really hope this makes it over to the US soon
22:30
and hopefully everywhere, Europe, Australia, New Zealand,
22:34
et cetera, everywhere Tesla is,
22:37
I hope this functionality will follow very shortly.
22:42
Next this week, I know that I don't typically cover
22:46
the energy side of Tesla's business on this podcast too often,
22:50
but Tesla made a big new announcement
22:53
in that department this week
22:54
that I wanted to bring up here.
22:56
They unveiled a new grid-scale battery backup system
23:00
this week, and it is called MegaBlock.
23:05
That has a very space ball sounding name, doesn't it?
23:08
Which of course, fitting for Tesla.
23:11
I guess I'm just, maybe I'm just,
23:13
I'm hearing MegaMade in my head,
23:18
but it's MegaBlock.
23:20
So here's the text accompanying the video
23:24
that was on Tesla's official X account.
23:26
They said, MegaPak is our utility-scale
23:30
energy storage platform,
23:32
a key part of our mission
23:33
to achieve sustainable abundance via sustainable energy.
23:37
Tesla MegaPak stores energy when production is high
23:41
and discharges slash releases it when the grid needs it,
23:45
balancing renewables and supporting a reliable grid.
23:49
MegaBlock is our pre-engineered medium voltage block
23:54
designed for 20 megawatt hour AC, 25 year life,
23:59
and more than 10,000 cycles.
24:02
91% round trip efficiency at medium voltage,
24:06
inclusive of auxiliary loads,
24:08
ambient operating temperature range
24:10
from negative 40 Celsius to 60 degrees Celsius.
24:16
It has a 23% faster to install time
24:20
with up to 40% lower construction costs,
24:24
site-level density of 248 megawatt hours AC per acre,
24:29
with all clearances needed for installation and service.
24:33
And then they mentioned that MegaBlock uses MegaPak 3
24:36
with a proven inverter and fire system,
24:40
a drastically simplified thermal bay
24:42
with 78% fewer connections.
24:45
The latest cell technology supply from the US,
24:48
meaning battery cell, not cellular telephone,
24:52
supply from the US, Southeast Asia and China,
24:56
and they have a 50 gigawatt hour per year
25:00
manufacturing capability for the MegaBlock.
25:04
Deliveries start in the second half of 2026,
25:08
and they say software and services from Tesla
25:11
demonstrated across more than 36 gigawatt hours
25:16
of a global operating fleet.
25:17
So I have to admit first and foremost here
25:21
that I know very little about this
25:23
compared to the vehicles,
25:25
but from what even I, a layman, can see, slash read,
25:30
it seems clear that the ceiling on this,
25:33
this, and meaning by this,
25:35
I don't just mean the MegaBlock,
25:36
but I mean Tesla's entire grid storage solution ecosystem,
25:43
the ceiling on it is still sky high
25:46
and that Tesla is almost certainly not even close
25:50
to tapping into what all of this is capable of.
25:54
I mean, this is a huge leap forward
25:56
for grid scale storage in a lot of ways,
26:00
as you heard from Tesla's description,
26:02
but the big one certainly seems like
26:06
it's gonna be the one that ultimately
26:08
decides how successful this is,
26:09
and that is of course money.
26:11
Tesla mentioned up to 40% lower construction costs
26:17
because obviously by cutting construction costs
26:21
way down through no doubt speed and simplicity,
26:24
it's just going to convince more utilities
26:28
and other large scale enterprises and municipalities
26:32
to go this route, to do a MegaBlock.
26:35
So I think it's kind of a lot
26:37
like the Tesla Semi in that regard,
26:39
meaning nobody in this space is shopping
26:44
for which utility energy storage system looks the best.
26:49
No, no, it's not about sexy,
26:52
it is all about the bottom line.
26:55
And Tesla, as we've just heard,
26:57
has a very strong argument
27:00
with both the bottom line argument for this
27:04
and also the bottom line argument
27:06
on the Tesla Semi as well.
27:08
And remember too that the energy side
27:11
of Tesla's business has been booming
27:13
even while the car business has struggled a bit.
27:16
So MegaBlock should only serve to keep the good times rolling
27:22
on the energy side of things at Tesla.
27:25
Here's a fun story next.
27:27
We've got a couple of interesting new nuggets
27:30
that have been unearthed from the latest decompile
27:33
of Tesla's iOS app code.
27:35
And this comes courtesy of the folks
27:37
at Tesla iOS app updates,
27:40
whose X account handle is Tesla underscore app underscore iOS.
27:46
They mentioned that there's a line of code in there
27:48
for a new paint color called silk road silver
27:54
with a mention of a hashtag 2D2C2D
28:01
and then metallic and roughness.
28:04
So these are fields for these things.
28:07
So I don't know if this is anything
28:10
or if I'm completely on the wrong track here
28:13
but I searched that as a Pantone color code hashtag 2D2C2D
28:21
and Google spit this back at me.
28:24
The color code 2D2C2D is a very dark neutral gray
28:30
that falls between black and dark gray
28:33
with the closest standard Pantone match
28:35
being Pantone black C.
28:38
And then the little image icon next to it
28:41
on that Google result that showed the color
28:45
had the Pantone color code and the words carbon fiber on it.
28:50
And yes, the color that Google showed me
28:52
was close to that of carbon fiber
28:55
if that helps you picture it a little bit.
28:58
I mean, I have to again acknowledge here
29:01
it may mean absolutely nothing
29:03
in terms of describing this color as Tesla is using it
29:07
but even setting that aside,
29:10
I'm actually kind of at a bit of a loss here
29:12
because I can't figure out what this might even be for.
29:17
The Model 3 and the Model Y just got quick silver
29:20
not too long ago, at least worldwide, right?
29:24
Obviously, giga Berlin has been painting Model Ys
29:27
in that color for some time now.
29:29
And then the Model S and the Model X
29:31
not too long ago got lunar silver.
29:35
So purely anecdotally speaking,
29:38
quick silver does seem very popular
29:42
and I see, because I see it on a lot of 3s,
29:45
I see it on a lot of Ys,
29:47
whereas lunar silver, again purely anecdotally speaking,
29:53
does not seem to be that popular around here
29:56
because of the S's and X's that I see,
29:59
it's pretty rare that I see one in lunar silver.
30:04
So all I can wonder is,
30:07
is Tesla considering cutting bait on lunar silver perhaps?
30:13
And the reason I mentioned that
30:15
is because I just can't see them adding another new color,
30:21
especially when it would be yet another
30:24
gray scale color at that.
30:27
And I can't see them adding another color
30:29
to either the high volume
30:31
or the low volume vehicle lineup.
30:34
I guess theoretically it would be easier
30:36
to add it to the S and X, the lower volume vehicles,
30:40
but I guess you can color me confused on this one
30:45
until, if and until, we hear more.
30:50
And then there's one other interesting part of this,
30:53
again, courtesy of Tesla iOS app updates.
30:57
They say, looks like a new program
31:00
will be spinning up soon called challenges.
31:03
We see many strings relating to this,
31:05
again in the code of the app.
31:07
Sadly no extended details on this quite yet.
31:11
This could be things like supercharge five times a month
31:15
or drive X number of miles on FSD.
31:18
This could be a rewards program
31:21
for exploring more Tesla products.
31:24
And then they list some strings
31:26
that were listed in there,
31:27
but I definitely thought that was worth bringing up
31:30
because this could be a real life implementation
31:34
of an idea that I tossed out on the podcast years ago
31:38
where you'd effectively earn achievements,
31:41
digital achievements,
31:43
for visiting particular supercharger locations
31:45
and things like that.
31:47
Basically, fun little ways to encourage you
31:50
to use your car more.
31:53
I mean granted, achievement systems
31:56
have basically become commonplace in gaming at this point.
31:59
Ever since the Xbox 360 first brought them to the table
32:03
20 years ago, oh wow.
32:08
The Xbox 360 came out in 2005,
32:10
November 22nd, 2005.
32:12
So we are rapidly approaching the 20 year anniversary
32:19
which wow, does that make me feel old
32:22
because I was a working professional
32:25
covering the launch of the Xbox 360
32:28
back at Official Xbox Magazine when I worked there.
32:32
Anyway, Tesla does like to have fun.
32:35
We know that, right?
32:36
So implementing something like this
32:39
does feel very on brand for Tesla.
32:43
And as such, I will be cheering this one on
32:46
and looking forward to its hopefully imminent debut.
32:51
Heck, maybe they'll even offer real world prizes
32:54
at some point along the way.
32:56
Like I'm talking stuff like t-shirts,
32:59
Optimus figurines, stuff like that.
33:02
And if you're thinking, well, no way they'd ever do that.
33:06
They've done physical prize giveaways before
33:09
with the referral program.
33:10
So you can't rule it out.
33:12
We'll see what happens.
33:13
But that is a very enticing line of code there
33:17
discovered in the Tesla app.
33:20
Let me take a quick moment here
33:22
in the middle of the podcast
33:23
to mention my friends at Xcare.
33:26
Accelerate Auto and their Xcare Extended EV Warranty.
33:31
I've got one on our 2018 Model 3.
33:33
It has served me well a couple times so far.
33:36
I guess ultimately I hope I don't have to use it again.
33:40
That is ideally, you don't wanna have a problem.
33:43
But if you do, you wanna have
33:46
good extended warranty coverage.
33:48
If you plan to keep your Tesla longer
33:50
than the manufacturer's warranty,
33:53
which my wife and I certainly have that plan
33:56
and we have done that.
33:57
We're at seven years and 75,000 miles right now.
34:01
So we are still covered no longer by the manufacturer's
34:05
warranty but by Xcare.
34:08
And what I love about Xcare compared to Tesla's
34:12
extended warranty is that Xcare lets you
34:15
customize it to your liking.
34:16
So the number of years from two more years
34:20
to 10 more years or anything in between
34:23
from 25,000 more miles to 125,000 more miles
34:29
or anything in between.
34:32
You wanna cover the high voltage battery
34:34
in the drive unit, the most expensive
34:36
components of the car so that if anything happens
34:38
to them during the course of your extended
34:40
warranty policy, they're covered
34:43
and you don't have to pay thousands
34:45
upon thousands of dollars for a new battery pack.
34:47
You'll feel good having Xcare.
34:49
So the good news here too is you get $100 off
34:55
when you select Xcare's one time payment option.
34:58
All you have to do is use the discount code Lightning.
35:02
So go to xcare.com, pick the plan that works for you,
35:07
the number of years, the number of miles,
35:10
the different coverage options.
35:12
And when you're all set to check out,
35:15
use that one time payment option
35:17
and use the discount code Lightning for $100 off.
35:22
Again, xcare.com, that's X-C-A-R-E dot com.
35:28
Here's a piece of news that might seem bad on its surface
35:31
but I don't think it ultimately is.
35:34
I saw this on Drive Tesla Canada who wrote,
35:37
Tesla's grip on the American electric vehicle
35:40
market is loosening with new data
35:42
showing its market share slipping to levels
35:45
not seen in nearly eight years.
35:47
According to figures from Cox Automotive shared with Reuters,
35:51
the company accounted for 38% of US EV sales in August,
35:56
the first time it had dropped below 40% since October of 2017.
36:02
The downward trend became evident in July
36:05
when Tesla's market share fell from 48.7% in June
36:12
Its sharpest single month dropped since early 2021.
36:16
While Tesla has still sold over 53,000 vehicles
36:20
in the month of August,
36:22
rivals expanded sales by as much as 120% year over year.
36:27
In August, Tesla sales grew just 3.1%
36:31
compared to a 14% increase
36:33
across the broader EV market,
36:36
Cox Automotive data showed.
36:38
Once dominating more than 80% of the EV market,
36:41
Tesla now faces intensifying competition
36:44
from traditional automakers and newer entrants.
36:47
Brands like Hyundai, Kia, Toyota, and Honda
36:51
have rolled out new EV models
36:52
with attractive financing options,
36:54
zero interest deals, and aggressive lease incentives.
36:58
These strategies have helped rivals grow their market share.
37:02
So I guarantee that you will see this throne.
37:06
You might even hear it at some point
37:08
come up at like a dinner party or who knows.
37:12
But you will see this throne around
37:14
as some sort of gotcha against Tesla, right?
37:17
Like see, I told you so from the, you know,
37:20
that's the fudsters, the anti-Tesla people,
37:22
but here's the thing, it doesn't really mean too much.
37:28
Now Tesla's sales, those are ultimately
37:30
the measuring stick, and yes, they are down a bit.
37:35
But market share is the wrong metric
37:38
to try and measure Tesla's success or failure by.
37:43
I've talked about this on the podcast before,
37:45
many years ago now, as I recall.
37:49
Tesla basically started at near 100% market share
37:54
from the Model S and Model X days
37:57
to then the Model 3 days.
37:59
Now sure, you had people like Nissan in there
38:02
with the leaf, Audi had the first gen E-tron,
38:06
but that was mostly about it.
38:10
Now, there are so many more EVs in the market
38:15
and that's a great thing, not a good thing, a great thing.
38:19
Elon Musk himself would probably tell you
38:22
that that's a great thing.
38:24
Remember, Tesla's entire mission
38:28
prior to this very recent sustainable abundance pivot
38:32
was to accelerate the world's transition
38:35
to sustainable transport.
38:38
In fact, this jogged my memory,
38:40
so, and I'm gonna jog yours here,
38:43
go all the way back to 2012,
38:47
back when Tesla unanimously won
38:50
Motor Trends Car of the Year award for that year.
38:55
In his acceptance speech, Elon Musk said,
38:58
and yes, I've dug up the exact clip for you
39:01
from the Motor Trend Presentation.
39:03
Well, just listen for yourself.
39:05
This is what Elon had to say back in 2012.
39:11
But I think, I'm hopeful that other car companies
39:15
will in fact copy us and follow through
39:18
and do electric car programs with Greater Vigor
39:21
as a result of this award.
39:23
So, that's the thing I hope will most occur
39:27
as a result of this.
39:29
That's right, Ryan McCaffrey always brings receipts.
39:34
But in short, again, it's a good thing
39:37
for the EV movement overall
39:39
that Tesla has lost market share.
39:41
It's not a good thing that their sales are down,
39:44
but it is a good thing for the transition
39:46
to sustainable transport overall
39:49
that Tesla's market share has gone down
39:51
from its absurd and unsustainable peak.
39:55
Now we have other options.
39:58
This is what Tesla wanted all along
40:00
was more EVs in the marketplace,
40:03
and we have that now, and that's a good thing.
40:07
Moving along to our next story, yes, there's more.
40:10
Let's see, we got one, two.
40:13
Yeah, I've got like four more stories for you.
40:15
There's still plenty more to talk about.
40:17
And so, we move to this one.
40:20
Well, let's go back to Las Vegas.
40:22
I was talking about Vegas
40:23
in the beginning of the podcast.
40:25
And in fact, I was talking about FSD
40:28
in the form of RoboTaxi in the beginning of the podcast.
40:33
Tesla begins full self-driving tests
40:36
in boring companies Las Vegas tunnels.
40:40
Tip of the cap to drive Tesla Canada,
40:42
which is where I saw this story.
40:43
And they wrote, the Las Vegas Convention
40:46
and Visitors Authorities confirmed
40:48
that testing started quietly at the end of 2024
40:52
lining up with our earlier reporting
40:54
and has continued throughout 2025.
40:59
Tesla vehicles equipped with FSD supervised
41:02
are now navigating the three and a half mile underground system
41:05
while boring company safety drivers
41:07
remain behind the wheel ready to intervene.
41:10
According to the convention center CEO, Steve Hill,
41:14
these human backups still quote periodically
41:17
need to take control,
41:19
signaling that full autonomy remains out of reach.
41:23
The development is significant for both companies.
41:26
The boring company's tunnels were promoted
41:28
from the beginning as an ideal showcase
41:30
for autonomous transportation.
41:33
Since launching in 2021, however,
41:35
the system has relied exclusively on human drivers
41:39
transporting convention goers
41:40
through single lane tunnels to nearby hotels.
41:44
Despite the tunnels eliminating many of the obstacles
41:47
of surface driving,
41:48
such as weather, pedestrians or cross traffic,
41:51
Tesla's FSD has encountered unique challenges.
41:55
The tunnel's colorful LED lighting
41:57
and semi-polished rock walls create visual conditions
42:01
that confuse the camera-based system.
42:05
Unlike rivals such as Waymo or Cruz
42:08
that use LiDAR and radar,
42:10
Tesla's approach depends solely
42:12
on vision-based neural networks
42:14
making unusual light patterns a tricky variable.
42:18
Hill explained that while the environment
42:20
is simpler than city streets,
42:22
the system quote finds spots
42:24
that are difficult for them, end quote.
42:27
These issues highlight the complexity
42:29
of refining autonomous driving software
42:32
even in space's purpose built for controlled transit.
42:36
Although no accidents have been reported so far,
42:39
Hill cautions that widespread driverless service
42:42
is quote a ways off.
42:45
Before safety drivers can be removed,
42:47
Tesla and the boring company
42:49
must prove the system can operate
42:51
with exceptional reliability
42:52
and earn the trust of passengers.
42:55
Hill added that the LVCVA would likely hire
42:59
independent consultants to review safety data
43:02
before approving any expansion of autonomous operations.
43:07
Well, I suppose you could count the boring tunnels
43:10
as one giant edge case, right?
43:14
Because it's just, as the article stated,
43:16
it's nothing like what you would find
43:18
anywhere up on the surface.
43:20
Sure, there are plenty of tunnels in the world,
43:23
but none that narrow where one wrong flinch of the wheel
43:28
will result in the car trading paint with the tunnel wall.
43:33
Honestly, I think it's a little bit surprising to learn
43:37
that the funky neon lighting of the Vegas loop
43:40
can actually throw off the system,
43:42
but I guess the optimistic way to look at this
43:45
would be that it's a great learning opportunity
43:48
for the Tesla AI team to examine the data
43:51
and train the cars to more reliably
43:54
and comfortably navigate through those tunnels.
43:57
There will be more boring tunnel projects, we know that,
44:01
and that means there will be more need
44:04
for autonomous Teslas in these loops.
44:07
And on a side note, I just wanna say
44:10
that I really appreciate the honesty and transparency
44:14
of the Las Vegas Convention
44:17
and Visitors Authority CEO on this.
44:19
He did not give any, there was no spin on that.
44:23
He just gave a straight answer about what's good
44:27
about this testing, what's going well,
44:29
and what is still a work in progress
44:32
on this autonomous portion of the boring loop project.
44:37
If only all spokespeople for all companies
44:41
were more like that, I would certainly be grateful,
44:43
but good to see Tesla rub off on him a little bit
44:46
in that way, cause Teslas like that too,
44:49
they don't really put out sugar-coated PR statements,
44:52
which I've always, always appreciated.
44:55
And speaking of the boring company,
44:58
they have received the green light
45:00
from Vegas larger county, Clark County,
45:04
Clark County officials to move forward
45:07
with its latest project in the Las Vegas Valley.
45:11
This time it is not an underground tunnel,
45:14
but something above ground,
45:16
a six-story residential development
45:19
with direct access to the company's
45:21
Vegas loop transportation system.
45:25
One more tip of the cap here goes to Drive Tesla Canada,
45:28
which is where I saw this story.
45:30
And they wrote, county commissioners voted unanimously
45:33
to approve the proposal, paving the way
45:36
for the mixed-use complex that combines housing,
45:40
lifestyle amenities, and sustainable transit options.
45:44
The development known as Loop Apartments
45:47
will be built near Flamingo Road and Paradise Road,
45:51
one of the city's busiest intersections.
45:54
The Loop Apartments will be a 132-unit,
45:57
six-level complex featuring a swimming pool,
46:00
state-of-the-art fitness center,
46:02
co-working spaces, a game room,
46:05
and a Bodega-style restaurant and bar.
46:09
What sets the project apart, however,
46:11
is the integration of a Loop Transit station
46:14
on the ground floor.
46:16
The underground station, accessible by two ramps,
46:20
will connect directly to the boring company's
46:22
Las Vegas Loop Network.
46:24
Once operational, residents will be able
46:27
to step out of their apartments
46:28
and ride Tesla vehicles through underground tunnels
46:31
to destinations across the city in minutes.
46:35
The Las Vegas Loop began as a pilot system
46:37
beneath the Las Vegas Convention Center,
46:39
moving attendees quickly between the halls
46:41
that would otherwise require long walks.
46:44
Since then, expansion plans have been steadily approved
46:47
to extend the network throughout the resort corridor
46:52
and into the broader Las Vegas area.
46:56
By including a residential stop within the Loop system,
46:59
this project marks a significant evolution
47:02
in how the network could serve not just tourists,
47:05
but also local residents.
47:08
According to the boring company,
47:10
the goal of Loop Apartments is to showcase
47:12
how modern housing can be seamlessly integrated
47:16
with next generation transit systems.
47:19
Instead of relying solely on surface roads,
47:22
residents will have direct access
47:24
to a network designed to cut congestion and travel times.
47:28
Thank you to Drive Tesla Canada for that one.
47:32
Well, this to me is a fascinating civic experiment,
47:37
especially in Las Vegas,
47:39
where not a lot of it is walkable
47:42
since everything's so spread out.
47:46
but in terms of if you're going to live there,
47:48
it's not a particularly walkable place,
47:51
just like the Phoenix area that I largely grew up in.
47:54
And then of course,
47:56
it's a fascinating civic experiment
47:59
because as we all know,
48:01
it's blistering hot outside in Vegas for half the year.
48:04
So if you can zip around Vegas,
48:08
I mean, eventually as the Vegas Loop continues to expand
48:11
as I've covered here before,
48:13
if you can zip around Vegas
48:15
and do so completely underground,
48:18
out of the sun in a climate cool,
48:22
nicely controlled Tesla
48:24
without the sun beating down on you,
48:27
that could prove to be a really attractive option
48:32
I mean, it might not necessarily make as much sense
48:36
for families who have to shuttle kids to daycare
48:39
or school or after school activities
48:41
or their friends' houses,
48:43
but for younger professionals, younger couples,
48:48
I could see this being really appealing
48:51
if this project and the larger Loop network
48:54
live up to their full potential.
48:56
So I once again would like to salute
48:59
Las Vegas City Leadership
49:02
for their forward thinking approach to transportation.
49:06
They have completely embraced the boring company
49:09
in a way that truly no other city has,
49:12
at least as of yet.
49:14
And as I've said before,
49:16
I'll just say it again here,
49:17
I do look forward to my next Las Vegas visit
49:21
so that I can finally take my first ride
49:24
in the boring Loop.
49:25
I don't have any plans at the moment
49:28
but we'll see, hopefully I'll have a good reason to go
49:31
sooner rather than later.
49:34
And moving, I guess those last couple of stories
49:36
were kind of already non-Tesla stories.
49:39
They were Teslaverse, Tesla Universe stories.
49:44
These next two are definitely outside of the Teslaverse.
49:48
They are other EV news stories.
49:51
there is a limited edition,
49:54
officially licensed Batman-themed SUV,
50:01
Unfortunately, you can't get it in the US or even Europe.
50:06
It's only available in India.
50:09
I saw this on Jalopnik,
50:11
who wrote the Mahindra BE6 Batman Edition
50:15
has just what the Dark Knight needs,
50:18
a unique satin black color,
50:20
a 79 kilowatt hour battery,
50:23
and more emblems than you can throw a batarang at.
50:26
Best of all, it's a real vehicle that you can buy,
50:29
at least if you're in India rather than Gotham City.
50:33
The Mahindra BE6 Batman Edition sure looks the part
50:37
and it was developed in partnership
50:39
with Warner Brothers Discovery Global Consumer Products.
50:43
The image of the caped crusader himself
50:46
behind the front fenders
50:47
is a little over the top for an actual Batmobile,
50:50
but not for a limited edition of 300 cars.
50:54
And the BE6 already has a wild design.
50:57
I certainly encourage you to Google image search it.
51:00
The unique 20 inch alloy wheels,
51:03
complete with Bat logo center caps,
51:06
are perfect for the Batman theme
51:07
as are the gold calipers and springs.
51:11
The panoramic glass sunroof lights up with the Bat emblem
51:14
from the Dark Knight trilogy,
51:16
visible from both inside and out.
51:19
It's definitely a gimmick,
51:20
but Batman is all about gimmicks,
51:22
whether functional or not.
51:24
The Jalopnik writer adds my favorite feature
51:26
is the Bat signal puddle lights,
51:29
which yeah, that does sound pretty cool.
51:32
The Batman Edition is appropriately based
51:34
on the most powerful version of the BE6.
51:38
While it's 282 horsepower and 280 pound feet of torque
51:43
may not quite match the turbines or jets Batman is used to,
51:47
it should be plenty quick for his biggest fans.
51:50
One nice touch is that the boost mode button
51:53
on the steering wheel,
51:54
which provides an extra burst of power for 10 seconds,
51:57
has only a Bat symbol labeling it,
52:00
making it feel like a special crime fighting feature.
52:04
Mahindra spread Bat emblems throughout the cabin as well.
52:07
Some are in your face like the one
52:09
on the dashboard at startup
52:12
and the numbered Batman Edition plaque
52:14
on the center console.
52:17
sewn into fabric door pulls or tags on the seats.
52:21
Well, this thing, again, if you take a look at it
52:26
it certainly sounds over the top
52:29
and it definitely looks a bit over the top as well.
52:32
I'll say for my part,
52:34
it looks kind of like a lifted Polestar three,
52:39
except all in black of course.
52:42
And I do find it strange
52:44
that Warner Brothers would do this licensing deal
52:48
in India of all places.
52:50
I mean, Batman is popular worldwide,
52:53
but it just seems like why wouldn't you also do this
52:57
in Europe, UK, the US?
53:01
Sort of a strange, just maybe unexpected choice
53:05
to have this be only available in India.
53:08
I mean, I don't know,
53:09
maybe Batman is a particularly popular character there
53:13
even more so than elsewhere.
53:15
But for what it's worth,
53:18
I will say after looking at pictures of it,
53:21
I certainly don't see Batman driving this.
53:24
And as for Bruce Wayne,
53:26
like I don't even know if this one would be one
53:29
that Bruce Wayne would be rolling around in.
53:32
Bruce Wayne would drive a next-gen Tesla Roadster,
53:36
maybe a Rimock Nevera.
53:38
Of course, Batman would maybe rock a
53:43
Matt Black Cybertruck as well,
53:45
that would make sense,
53:46
versus Bruce Wayne in the Roadster.
53:48
But when I did see this,
53:50
I did get a kick out of it.
53:52
So as a big Batman fan myself,
53:55
I thought I would share it with you.
53:57
And finally this week,
53:59
Porsche is preparing to become the first automaker
54:02
to bring factory integrated wireless charging
54:08
One last tip of the cap to drive Tesla Canada
54:11
the technology will launch
54:13
with the upcoming electric Cayenne scheduled to debut
54:16
at the end of 2025,
54:19
with deliveries beginning in 2026.
54:22
The system called Porsche Wireless Charging
54:25
uses an inductive floor plate
54:27
that transfers up to 11 kilowatts of power
54:30
directly to a charging coil
54:32
installed in the underbody of the vehicle.
54:35
Owners simply park their Cayenne over the plate
54:38
and the car automatically lowers itself
54:40
to optimize alignment.
54:43
charging begins without the need for plugging in.
54:46
Unlike traditional wall box setups,
54:49
Porsche says its one box approach
54:52
integrates all necessary electronics
54:54
into the charging pad itself.
54:57
Aside from a supply cable,
54:59
no separate wall unit or control hardware is required.
55:03
The company claims the system achieves
55:04
an efficiency rate of up to 90%,
55:08
which rivals conventional wired AC charging.
55:12
According to Porsche,
55:13
who will debut their wireless charging tech
55:15
at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich,
55:18
the charging pad is not small
55:21
and weighs about 110 pounds or 50 kilos,
55:25
coming equipped with both Wi-Fi and LTE
55:28
for over-the-air software updates.
55:31
Safety features include a motion detector,
55:34
foreign object detection,
55:36
and automatic shutoff if interference is detected.
55:40
The wireless setup will be offered
55:42
as a paid option on the Cayenne Electric,
55:45
meaning not every vehicle will come equipped.
55:47
Initially, the technology will roll out in Europe in 2026
55:51
with other markets to follow.
55:54
Well, man, 90% efficiency is incredibly impressive.
56:01
what will this optional wireless charging setup cost?
56:06
Now, it will no doubt get cheaper over time
56:10
and having everything built right into it
56:13
is the best, the smartest way, I think, to do this,
56:16
but I'm curious about the price tag
56:19
because Porsche is not known
56:22
for having affordable accessories.
56:26
They are known for getting a lot of extra money
56:30
out of their customers through accessories
56:34
and customization on the vehicles.
56:36
But seriously though, whatever the price ends up being,
56:39
this is really, really cool to see.
56:42
We already know Tesla's going down this road as well
56:45
with the CyberCab and presumably future versions
56:48
of its other vehicles as well.
56:51
And I know there's at least one or two other
56:54
plug-in hybrid supercars slash hypercars
56:58
that already have this.
56:59
I had to Google this to double check
57:01
but my memory was correct.
57:03
The McLaren Speedtail,
57:05
which was like a $2 million car new,
57:07
now they're worth even more than that,
57:10
but obviously we need this tech to scale up
57:13
in both scale up in volume, I should say,
57:16
and scale down in price for the rest of us
57:20
that don't have McLaren Speedtail money,
57:23
but I'm glad to see that that is starting to happen
57:26
courtesy of the engineering team at Porsche.
57:30
Thank you guys, I will look forward to seeing
57:32
more of that in the real world
57:34
and seeing Tesla's implementation next year
57:37
with the CyberCab as well.
57:42
All right, that's everything I've got for you
57:44
in another busy week of Tesla and EV news.
57:47
But stick with me, I've got a few of your excellent
57:50
Ride the Lightning hotline phone calls
57:52
all queued up and ready to go right after this.
57:55
This is Bill Daniels,
57:57
the voice of Night Industries 2000 or Kit.
58:03
You're listening to Ride the Lightning,
58:06
the Tesla unofficial podcast,
58:09
happy electric motoring.
58:12
Enough talking by me, let's hear from all of you
58:15
in the Ride the Lightning hotline,
58:16
it's your chance to call in
58:17
and potentially be featured here on the podcast.
58:21
If you've got a Tesla or EV question,
58:23
comment or discussion topic,
58:25
I welcome and invite you to call in with it.
58:29
And how do you do that?
58:30
Well, there are two easy ways to call in.
58:32
One, use your smartphone's built-in voice recording software,
58:37
record your question,
58:38
please try to keep it to 90 seconds or less
58:41
so that I can get to as many callers
58:42
each week as possible.
58:44
And then email that file to me
58:45
at my podcast email address,
58:47
which is teslapodcastatgmail.com.
58:52
Or you can take that same 90 second or less question
58:55
and just call in and leave a message anytime day or night
58:59
on the Ride the Lightning hotline.
59:01
It's a toll-free number and the number is 1-888-989-8752.
59:09
That number again, 1-888-989-TSLA.
59:14
And if you know someone special out there
59:15
with an upcoming birthday, anniversary, graduation
59:18
or some other special occasion,
59:19
you can give them a unique gift
59:21
of recorded voices from friends and family
59:23
telling them why they're special.
59:24
The recordings can be podcasted
59:26
or even put onto a keepsake.
59:28
Visit lifeonrecord.com to learn more.
59:31
Let's go to their first caller,
59:32
which is Dave from Georgetown, Texas.
59:36
Hey, Ryan, it's Dave from Georgetown, Texas,
59:38
just north of Gigatexas.
59:40
Forever the listener called a few times.
59:43
I just listened to your human-esque comment about FSD.
59:47
My wife and I were driving down the Tula in highway
59:50
that was interspersed with small towns.
59:52
We came up to a light at the small town
59:54
and it turned yellow and FSD speeded up
59:57
to get through the yellow light.
59:58
We both laughed out loud.
00:05
The other thing was I picked up my car July 26th
00:09
in Gigatexas and I was offered a tour.
00:13
I wasn't able to take it as it turns out
00:15
it had to be done on a Friday.
00:17
But they did offer it to me.
00:20
And the third thing is a question.
00:22
In my Model Y, I set the height of the tailgate
00:25
so it didn't hit my garage ceiling or door
00:29
But it doesn't always go up to full height
00:32
when I'm not at home,
00:33
which is annoying because I hit my head on it.
00:36
I don't know if there's something that will fix that.
00:38
I'd like to suggest you to have it.
00:40
Thanks for all you do, Ryan, appreciate it.
00:42
Dave, it's great to hear from you.
00:44
Thank you for calling in.
00:46
You mentioned a few things there
00:47
so I will start with the yellow light behavior.
00:50
Now I am obviously no AI engineer
00:54
but I would have to imagine that getting the car
00:57
to do the right thing, which I suppose means
01:01
the safest thing at a yellow light
01:03
has gotta be one of the biggest challenges
01:06
for the Tesla AI team.
01:08
Because legally stopping might sometimes be
01:13
the thing you're supposed to do
01:15
but if you've got someone right on your tail
01:18
you don't wanna jam on the brakes, right?
01:19
And have them potentially rear end you.
01:21
So you're right, yellow light behavior
01:24
is definitely human-like when the car gets it right
01:28
which in my experience, knock on wood here,
01:32
it does seem to get right
01:33
a pretty large majority of the time.
01:37
Second, thank you for letting me know
01:40
that Gigatex's tours for new deliveries
01:43
are already a thing.
01:45
Hopefully Tesla continues to expand that out
01:49
beyond just one day a week
01:51
once that delivery center that they're prepping
01:54
opens up here pretty soon.
01:56
And finally, as to why your Model Y's rear liftgate
02:01
is not going up all the way
02:03
in places where you haven't GPS tagged it
02:06
to not go up all the way,
02:09
I'm at a loss for words on that one, I'm afraid.
02:12
So if anybody out there might happen to have
02:14
a good suggestion that can help Dave out,
02:18
feel free to either call in or email me
02:21
and I'm happy to pass it along to both Dave
02:23
and everybody else out there
02:25
in case it can be helpful to others.
02:27
But cheers Dave, thank you again for your call.
02:31
Here's Nick from Northeast Ohio up next.
02:36
Hello Ryan, this is Nick again from Northeast Ohio,
02:39
longtime listener and now a recent Patreon subscriber.
02:43
Thanks for all you do.
02:45
This is more a request for Tesla in dog mode.
02:49
So I am a fellow lover of dogs
02:52
and we are out today enjoying Labor Day
02:55
and left our dog in the car after our hike
03:00
and notice that when you put on dog mode,
03:03
the rear fan turns off.
03:05
So we keep our dog in a dog crate
03:09
in the back, we don't leave him free rein inside the car.
03:13
But we keep the rear fan on
03:15
while we're driving with him in the back
03:17
and also if you push keep, it also keeps the rear fan on.
03:20
But if you hit dog mode, that rear fan turns off.
03:24
Means no airflow going to the back where his crate is.
03:26
So if any Tesla engineers are listening,
03:30
it would be great to have that rear fan enabled
03:34
So thanks a lot Ryan for all you do
03:36
and we'll talk to you next time.
03:40
Thank you Nick for your call
03:42
and for your kind and generous support on Patreon.
03:44
Both are sincerely appreciated.
03:47
I too am a frequent dog mode user
03:50
and I have to say I've never noticed this
03:52
and to be honest with you, it doesn't make sense.
03:54
I mean, I would hazard a somewhat confident guess
03:58
that the majority of people using dog mode
04:01
are not leaving their pet in the front seats
04:04
but instead in the back seats.
04:06
Maybe I'm taking crazy pills on this one?
04:10
Daisy, because Lily is not really old enough yet
04:14
to trust her on her own in the car in dog mode
04:17
if I'm running an errand,
04:19
if I'm going inside somewhere real quick.
04:21
But Daisy is in the back
04:24
with my Tesla dog hammock set up back there.
04:27
And she's always seemed perfectly comfortable
04:30
when I get back, but I do have to wonder
04:33
what the reason is for not running the rear fan in dog mode.
04:38
Surely the Tesla team has to have considered it.
04:41
So if anybody happens to know anything about this
04:45
that Nick and I might be missing,
04:47
again, please email me or call in and educate us.
04:52
I've just got time for one more call this week
04:54
on this busy episode.
04:56
Here comes Tyler from Michigan.
04:59
Hey Ryan, this is Tyler from Michigan,
05:01
been a long time listener of the show.
05:03
Also of Podcast Unlocked.
05:05
That's where I originally heard you from.
05:08
But recently joined the Tesla family in April
05:11
with a 23 Model Y with hardware four.
05:14
And I've been itching to try FSD.
05:16
So last, a couple of weeks ago,
05:19
we decided that we were gonna go in and give it a shot.
05:21
So we opted in for the $99 subscription,
05:24
which in hindsight may have been a huge mistake
05:27
because it's really good in our area
05:29
and it's making it very difficult
05:30
to cancel the subscription.
05:32
But I do have a suggestion or maybe even it's a question.
05:34
Maybe you can do this and I'm just unaware.
05:37
But as we drive just on city streets,
05:39
I like to have a hurry mode just because it's more natural.
05:43
It seems less like a robot driving the car
05:45
or more like a human.
05:47
And on the highway, I like to have it in standard
05:49
and that is because hurry can be kind of a jerk.
05:52
An example of that might be if I'm gonna get off
05:54
on an exit and I got a little over half a mile left
05:57
and I'm in the right lane and there's a car in front
05:58
of me just going slightly slower.
06:01
I prefer it just to slow down
06:02
but it generally opts to pass that vehicle
06:05
even if it means cutting them off the last second
06:07
right before the exit when it's in hurry mode.
06:09
So I switch it, which obviously means I have to look down
06:13
at the screen, switch it when I get on the highway
06:15
and then vice versa when I'm getting off,
06:17
which is a safety hazard at the very least.
06:22
But it would be really cool if Tesla had an option
06:25
in the settings for FSD,
06:26
we're on the highway I could have in one mode
06:28
and then on city streets in a different mode.
06:32
Thanks for the podcast, look forward to hearing from ya.
06:35
Hey Tyler, thanks for your call
06:37
and thank you for listening to Unlocked as well.
06:40
I genuinely love doing both podcasts
06:43
and it's the highlight of my day on Wednesdays
06:47
for Unlocked when I record that
06:49
and Fridays for Ride the Lightning.
06:51
You mentioned looking down at the screen
06:53
to change FSD mode so I wanted to, I spoiler,
06:58
I already emailed this to Tyler
07:00
so that he wouldn't have to wait
07:02
till I played this on the air
07:03
and he was appreciative of this
07:05
so I'm putting this out for everybody.
07:07
In case you're not aware,
07:08
you can switch the FSD mode pretty quickly and easily
07:12
by just clicking left or right
07:16
on the right scroll wheel button on your steering wheel
07:19
when FSD's engaged.
07:20
So if you're in standard,
07:23
clicking to the left will put it in chill
07:25
and clicking to the right will put it in hurry.
07:28
Now I personally use this in a specific way most of the time.
07:33
I've actually, I don't think I've ever used chill
07:35
so I basically go between standard and hurry
07:38
with 95% of the time I'm in standard
07:41
but if I want my car to pass the person in front of me,
07:49
I will just click over to hurry
07:53
and when I do that, the car will typically
07:56
immediately put on the left turn signal,
07:58
go over in the left lane
08:00
and make its way past that car in front of me
08:03
and then once I'm past it,
08:06
I click it back over into standard
08:08
and then the car will get out of the left lane.
08:10
If you leave it in hurry, it will stay in the left lane.
08:13
So I go, I click over to hurry, pass,
08:16
click back to standard and it moves back over.
08:19
So Tyler, I hope that helps
08:22
but by the way, I nevertheless still like your suggestion
08:26
of having a separate optional default preference
08:29
for highways and another separate default preference
08:34
That is a good idea.
08:36
I fully endorse it for whatever little that might be worth.
08:40
Thank you to everybody that kindly took the time
08:43
to call in this past week to ride the lightning.
08:46
Keep your calls coming
08:47
and I promise I will get to more of them
08:49
on next week's show if you're curious
08:52
Well, I mentioned how to do that,
08:54
the two easy methods at the top of this segment
08:56
so refer back to that.
08:59
Now, as for what's going on with me and my cars,
09:03
well, I took as I mentioned
09:05
near the top of the podcast this week,
09:08
I took three more RoboTaxi rides this week.
09:11
So they were all routes that I've done before,
09:14
in fact, done a number of times in one or both,
09:17
really, I guess both cars at this point.
09:20
So the first one, the first familiar route
09:23
was from my home to our canine companion's
09:28
puppy training class location.
09:31
And it's not a short distance,
09:34
it's like a, I don't know, 15, 20 minute drive
09:38
or so across the city.
09:40
And the RoboTaxi completely aced it.
09:44
There wasn't anything even remotely annoying that happened.
09:50
And I'll add that on that drive,
09:53
I also got very lucky and got a very chatty member
09:57
of the Tesla AI team as my driver.
10:01
I got to tell him about a particularly wicked edge case
10:04
near my house, which I think I've mentioned vaguely
10:08
in vague terms on the podcast before,
10:11
so I'm not gonna bore you with it again.
10:13
So I got to tell him about that
10:15
and I got to complain about the lane keeping troubles
10:21
Now, I have to say, if I'm honest with myself,
10:24
he was very nice, but I'm not so sure
10:26
he's gonna be taking any action on the AI3 car,
10:29
but in all seriousness, he did ask me specifically
10:34
what intersection that the edge case is at,
10:38
which as I've mentioned before,
10:41
there's a no write on red
10:43
and then a stop sign right after,
10:46
that it doesn't always adhere to.
10:49
So I showed him that.
10:50
So hopefully I can help affect positive change
10:54
for the RoboTaxi network.
10:56
Sadly, I have not been in the RoboTaxi in that spot
11:01
as of yet, it has not worked out that way.
11:05
So I'd like to see if the current RoboTaxi version
11:09
of the software handles it any better
11:12
than the production version in my AI3 and AI4 cars,
11:16
but so that was great to get to talk
11:20
to that Tesla AI team member.
11:22
I was asking him, so like how much of your day
11:25
is spent in the office doing other,
11:28
whatever else, I don't know, other coding
11:31
or what have you that you need to do,
11:33
versus how much of it is spent doing RoboTaxi safety
11:39
monitor rides, and he said in his case,
11:42
100% of his time is behind the wheel
11:45
as the safety monitor right now.
11:47
So Tesla is making just, he said that it is all hands
11:51
on deck for this, and that was just, that was pretty wild.
11:54
So they've got their actual team members out
11:58
doing these rides in certain situations.
12:02
At least here in the Bay Area,
12:03
there's probably some engineers in Austin as well,
12:07
I would guess, that might be out doing the rides
12:10
as the safety monitor, but then the other two rides I took,
12:17
I had very quiet safety monitors
12:19
that didn't say anything, which is totally fine.
12:22
I mean they, I said hello, they said hello,
12:24
I said thank you, they said have a nice day.
12:26
So it was all perfectly pleasant,
12:27
but just had the one Tesla AI team member
12:31
who was super nice, I'm not gonna,
12:33
I don't wanna give any more details
12:35
in case, I don't know if maybe he's not supposed to talk to,
12:38
I don't know what the actual policy is,
12:39
I don't wanna get anybody in trouble,
12:40
but I enjoyed chatting with him on that particular run.
12:45
So the second two rides that I took this week
12:49
in RoboTaxi were two, the Tesla San Francisco Service Center
12:55
as I took the 2018 car, the Spirit of Adventure
12:59
in for that overdue alignment I've been mentioning
13:02
here, plus I just did a brake fluid check
13:05
because it was recommended
13:06
and a cabin air filter replacement.
13:09
So it was just in for that,
13:11
so I took RoboTaxi on the way back
13:15
from dropping the car off,
13:16
and then I took it back from my home
13:19
to Tesla San Francisco Service Center
13:21
to go pick the car back up,
13:22
and again, it was flawless both times.
13:28
So I still, it's small sample size
13:32
so I've been in RoboTaxi four times now, four rides.
13:38
So far, I have literally nothing I can complain about.
13:42
I mean, I guess if I really, really wanted to drill down,
13:46
I can get super picky,
13:47
which maybe eventually Tesla can get to the point
13:50
where they can't address stuff like this,
13:53
like there are spots along routes,
13:59
my normal routes where the road kind of,
14:03
there's like a drain or a sewer grate
14:07
and the road like really dips down.
14:10
So if you just go over it,
14:12
like if you're just kind of in your lane
14:14
and you're staying in your lane,
14:16
you will go over that grate
14:18
and you'll feel the bump on the,
14:21
it's a pretty significant bump on the dip
14:24
as your rear, or side wheels,
14:26
one side of the car wheels
14:28
will dip into the grate,
14:30
I guess the right side wheel, passenger side.
14:32
So like when I'm manually driving my car,
14:36
I will drive around them
14:38
as long as there isn't another car coming at me
14:42
from the other direction.
14:44
So like that would be a longer term,
14:47
like, hey, can the car actually see this stuff
14:51
and adjust around it?
14:53
I guess that would maybe fall
14:54
into the pothole kind of category,
14:57
which is gonna need to be addressed
15:00
sooner, probably sooner rather than later,
15:02
cause potholes can be damaging to vehicles,
15:06
to any vehicle, including a Model Y, a RoboTaxi.
15:09
So, but of course now you wanna start
15:13
squeaking toys over there.
15:14
She's been so good so far,
15:16
but anyhow, all of that is to say,
15:20
three rides this week, four total,
15:23
all within San Francisco,
15:26
which is not, in my opinion,
15:28
not an easy city to self-drive in,
15:32
and it has performed flawlessly thus far.
15:37
So I'm gonna keep using it whenever it makes sense,
15:41
and I'll keep reporting back to you on my experience.
15:46
Time now for an entertainment recommendation.
15:50
I realized at the last moment
15:53
that the thing I wanted to say,
15:55
I can't say till next week,
15:57
because it's still under embargo
16:00
when this podcast goes out.
16:01
It's a game review.
16:02
I reviewed a game this week that I,
16:05
well, I guess I won't say anymore.
16:06
I'll save it for next week,
16:07
but for this week I will recommend a different game,
16:11
but it's specifically a free playable demo of a game
16:15
that you can find on Steam,
16:18
and that game is called Dispatch,
16:22
and it is a game made by X Telltale employees.
16:26
So if you ever played Telltale's adventure games,
16:29
they're narrative games from at this point,
16:31
like five to 10 years ago.
16:35
So I'm talking about like The Walking Dead,
16:37
The Wolf of Us, The Wolf Among Us, pardon me,
16:41
Tales from the Borderlands, Batman.
16:45
They did a Game of Thrones one.
16:47
They did a bunch of stuff over the years,
16:50
and some of those former Telltale developers
16:55
have started a new studio called Adhoc,
16:58
and their first game is a similar Telltale-like game
17:04
where you play a dispatcher for a superhero group.
17:09
Like basically people call a 911-like service,
17:14
like a paid thing, and they have a problem
17:16
and you have to dispatch the right superhero for the job,
17:21
and the main character is voiced by Aaron Paul,
17:28
who's great and the writing's really funny.
17:30
And again, this was just a demo.
17:31
This isn't even the whole game.
17:33
And so yeah, I really enjoy the demo of that.
17:37
So if you like Telltale stuff,
17:39
check out the playable demo of Dispatch over on Steam.
17:44
Back to Tesla stuff.
17:45
Here's a pro tip from Steve in Austin.
17:50
This is Steve from Austin with a pro tip.
17:52
I've been enjoying this podcast since episode 200,
17:56
and I've never heard this come up before.
17:59
The tip is that the card key
18:00
can work in multiple cars at the same time.
18:03
If you have two or more Teslas,
18:05
you can program a single card key
18:07
to work in all of your cars.
18:09
Let's say you have two cars, Alice and Bob.
18:12
Make sure you have both keys
18:14
and your phone with you and sit down in Alice.
18:18
Go to the settings, locks,
18:20
and tap the add key button in the upper right.
18:23
The car screen will first tell you
18:25
to go to your Tesla app and select Alice.
18:29
Then place Bob's card key
18:31
in the appropriate place for your car,
18:34
either just ahead of the armrest
18:35
or in the left phone charger bay.
18:38
The screen will then prompt you to remove Bob's card
18:42
and put Alice's card key in the same place
18:45
to confirm your action.
18:47
After a moment, Bob's key will be paired with Alice.
18:51
Also note, the lock screen will allow you to name the key
18:55
so that you can see which key is active.
18:59
Because my wife and I are swapping our cars out
19:01
before the US tax incentives expire,
19:04
I've got a couple of things to say
19:05
about the sales process,
19:07
but I'll send those thoughts separately.
19:09
Keep up the great work, Ryan.
19:11
This is a great pro tip, Steve.
19:14
I absolutely take your word for it
19:16
that this one's never been featured as a pro tip,
19:19
which is surprising since I have used this pro tip myself.
19:24
I have both Model 3s bound to both cars' key cards.
19:30
So yeah, I am a user of this particular pro tip,
19:33
but it is an excellent suggestion.
19:36
If I've never mentioned it, shame on me.
19:38
Thank you for calling in with it.
19:40
This is an excellent suggestion
19:41
for the growing contingent of multi-Tesla households out there.
19:46
Thank you very much for sending this in.
19:48
And if anybody else out there has a good Tesla or EV
19:52
pro tip of the week, I'd love to hear it
19:54
so that I can learn from it
19:56
and I can share it with everybody else
19:58
and we can all learn from it.
20:01
Just call in with it the same way
20:03
that you would call in
20:04
with a regular ride to lightning hotline call.
20:07
The two easy call in methods
20:08
I gave you the instructions for a little while ago.
20:13
All right, I need to finish this podcast
20:16
I'm so tired, but we're almost there.
20:18
I just wanna mention a few friends of Ride the Lightning
20:20
that can hopefully be useful to you sooner or later.
20:24
I will start with abstractocean.com.
20:27
They have a 15% discount offer
20:29
for listeners of this podcast
20:31
who are making a first-time purchase
20:33
on abstractocean.com.
20:35
Just taking a quick look at their best sellers.
20:38
So for the new Model 3 mudflaps,
20:41
they've got a super hydrophobic camera cover
20:44
for three in the Y, that seems very handy.
20:46
They've got the ultra premium tempered glass screen
20:50
protectors for everything.
20:52
There's the expel armor frunk protection for Cybertruck,
20:56
the expel armor bed sale trim for the Cybertruck.
21:01
You've got an ultra premium tempered glass
21:03
screen protector for Rivian now too.
21:07
It just goes on, the ultra bright lights, the puddle lights.
21:11
There's so much cool stuff in here,
21:12
you gotta check them out, abstractocean.com.
21:15
Click on whichever vehicle you have at the top of the page,
21:17
then it will show you all of the accessories
21:20
they have available for your vehicle.
21:22
Pick out what you like, put it in your online shopping cart,
21:25
and when you get to check out,
21:26
use the coupon code RTLpodcast
21:31
to get that 15% off of your first order.
21:34
That's all one word RTLpodcast.
21:38
Meanwhile, the Snap Plate and the new Snap Plate Plus
21:41
that's even stronger, I just got an email from them today
21:44
actually, maybe you got it too
21:46
if you're on their mailing list.
21:47
They have the new version of their Snap Plate,
21:53
license plate bracket for the new Model X
21:56
because the X of course gained a lower
21:59
front bumper camera so they had to redesign
22:02
their Snap Plate to accommodate for that.
22:04
So if you've got whatever it is, SX3Y Cybertruck,
22:08
they've got a Snap Plate for you
22:10
and I do recommend it because it's a nice clean,
22:13
minimalist design and it doesn't stick
22:16
to the front of your car with automotive adhesive,
22:19
with automotive tape, the same way
22:21
that the one that Tesla gives you does.
22:23
So head on over to everyamp.com slash RTL.
22:28
Choose whatever one you like,
22:30
throw it in your shopping cart
22:31
and use the coupon code RTL when you get to check out
22:35
for a nice discount.
22:36
Thank you to my friends at everyamp
22:39
for that listener discount.
22:42

23:26
I guarantee you that you will leave happy
23:30

I absolutely love the incredibly professional,
23:36
just top shelf detail work that Immaculate Reflections
23:40
has done on both of my Teslas.
23:43

I have the same username on both.
25:38
That username is DMC underscore Ryan.
25:43
You can also email me anytime
25:45
for Tesla or EV related things
25:48
at teslapodcastatgmail.com.
25:53
Lastly, before I go,
25:54
I would like to express my sincerest thanks and gratitude
25:58
and say hello to the top tier Patreon backers.
26:02
These are the extra generous folks
26:04
that are really, really supporting the podcast
26:07
out of the goodness of their heart
26:08
in a very, a way that's significant to me
26:11
in terms of the effect on my life.
26:14
I mean, every Patreon pledge is appreciated.
26:16
Don't get me wrong.
26:18
and that's kind of what Patreon's all about, right?
26:20
It's like, you're not having one person donate
26:24
$1,000 a month, most of the time, I don't think.
26:28
But, you know, five bucks here, five bucks there.
26:31
These folks are very generous at the plaid,
26:34
maximum plaid and Roadster in Space tiers.

27:11
Ride the Lightning Patreon Zoom Hangout
27:14
for the month of September last week.
27:16
As we always do, it's just, it's always a nice conversation.
27:19
It tends to go in a few different directions
27:21
and that's what's fun.
27:21
I'll usually bring a few, like a short list of topics
27:26
and then it's wherever people want to take
27:28
the conversation about all things Tesla and EV
27:31
and so we always have a good time.
27:33
Thank you to the maximum plaid backers

29:18
Well that will do it for Ride the Lightning Episode 528
29:25
here is a, this is, let's see, well no,
29:28
I'll be recording next week's podcast
29:32
while I'm still 44 years of age,
29:35
but then after that I'll be 45.
29:38
My birthday is next weekend,
29:41
coming up, or I guess this coming weekend
29:43
by the time most of you hear this,
29:45
but yeah, boy, years flown by,
29:49
but looking forward to next week
29:52
to see what topics the Tesla and EV universe bring us,
29:57
but for now this has been hopefully a fun episode for you,
30:01
it's been fun for me.
30:03
Here we're coming in at the 90 minute mark,
30:05
so I wanna wrap it up, get you back to your day,
30:09
but I do so much appreciate your time and your attention
30:12
because those things are in, they're not plentiful, right?
30:18
You only have so much time, so much attention
30:20
you can pay to things.
30:21
Thank you for sharing in the joy and enthusiasm
30:25
in Tesla and in the EV space that I find with this.
30:29
It really is so much fun for me
30:30
to get to talk about this stuff
30:32
and have fellow enthusiasts, fellow car people,
30:38
I love it, it's great to have all of you with me,
30:40
so thank you all so much, happy electric motoring,
30:43
and I'll see you back here next week.
30:45
["Pomp and Circumstance"]
31:06
Elon Musk, people don't like Elon Musk.
31:08
The guy found a PayPal and Tesla
31:10
and people are like, yeah, but he's a troll and a bad dad.
31:12
I'm like, so is mine, he did nothing to fight climate change.
31:16
Also, have you been in a Tesla?
31:20
Have you been in a Tesla?
31:21
My buddy let me drive his Tesla.
31:23
I laughed out loud at how fast it went.
31:25
Been clinically depressed my entire life
31:28
on dozens of medications in a Tesla
31:30
for 13 seconds cured forever.
31:36
I mean, I think a Tesla is the most fun thing
31:41
you could possibly buy ever.
31:44
That's what it's meant to be.
31:46
Our goal is to make, it's not exactly a car,
31:51
it's actually a thing to maximize enjoyment.
