Just checking in with how you guys are going.

Let's start with some car updates.

Scotty Doe What's happening in your car world?

I wish I had some good car updates.

You've had a pretty good month, to be fair.

Yeah, I guess so. A bit quiet over here at the

moment. I've got the throttle cable that

arrived haven't. Fixed.

Because my whole weekend was packed with shovelling dirt into the backyard, so just trying to level out the backyard.

So it's took up my whole Saturday and Sunday mate.

You don't have to worry about it.

You just put like the 31 at the back.

You can dump the clutch now and you can make you can make make everything dirt essentially. Very true.

Very good. So so this weekend accelerated

cable and clutch fan. Yep.

Should we put those two in? That should be nice and easy.

Yeah. And I just I need to Polish up

those rims again. Yeah.

So I just chucked the polisher I've got on the drill and Polish them up so they look all nice and shiny again, because I haven't done it since I put them on and that was years ago, so yeah. Well, I think we need to have a

it's grand voyage of like with the boys kind of car moment.

I think we definitely need to do that because it's been, it's there, Scotty, it's done, it's it's ready to go.

You know, it's a it's a big thing, man.

Like it's a huge, it's a huge achievement, not gonna lie, it's a massive achievement. So.

I just got to get the new rego secret.

There we go. For this year's I've got all

that stuff here, got to make sure I take that.

I guess the the good news is with the shovelling of the of the dirt, I get that all levelled and then the shed can go up and everything in the garage that shouldn't be in there can go in there, which means then I can fit two cars.

So. The sturdy 1's going to come

home. Yep, nice.

What's exciting, Scotty? That's really, really good.

So anything with the blade door? I do need to service it.

I've got to buy the oil. That's the only thing I need to

do. I've got everything else ready

to go. Yep.

Yeah, just just. I'm sure.

I just keep tossing up brands and stuff every time.

That's so annoying. I don't know why I do this.

I do it every time and then I start going do I go 1030?

Do I go 530? I think keep it at 5:30 like

I've always run in my dad's 2GR530I run on.

That one. Yeah, fine.

We've been using, we used 530 Edge A3B4 and then we now we moved on to the Neulon 530 and I prefer the Neulon to be honest with you. I think the Neulon's really,

really good. It's a good Aussie oil, but both

are great oil. So I don't have no issues with

running either of those in my car.

Yeah, because I was looking at the 530 Ida Mitsu.

Oh yeah, OK. Is now available in Australia,

so and that was made for all Toyotas and Subarus and everything like that. So I thought for the price it's

actually pretty good. It's about the same price you'd

pay for Castrol Edge. Yeah, what upset?

So I thought maybe I might lean towards that and give that a crack. Don't really have anything to

lose. Yeah.

And in the grand scheme, things like I'm not gonna say oil is oil, but any oil is better than no oil or very old oil, so.

Yeah. As long as you're changing it to

something, the one thing I've kind of found is, especially in Australian cars, going to like some cars have the option of you can go up to 40 for the operating temperature, viscosity. Yeah, that's not actually the

worst thing when we're in peak summer, because when you see a lot of the oils that do is the five 30s particularly or that kind of top operating temperature kind of is that 40°?

Ideally, you don't want to go much higher than that.

And in Australia, if, especially if you take Rd trips out towards the harder parts, you definitely exceed that.

So during those times it'd be a consideration to possibly go, you know, like a 1040 kind of situation or a 540I know, I think Penrod does like a 540, I'm pretty sure.

But yeah, just at 5:30, I think you'd be fine.

I. Remember when I was running 1060

in the Typhoon for a bit, I was using that Supercar 1060 edge that, that Castrol Edge 1060 and that's saying if you're running a modified one, you'd run the 1060.

So I ran it for a little bit more.

It wasn't modified. And I definitely noticed on the

old pressure gauge at operating temp, it was the pressure was always, you know, it was, you know, it was quite sure.

I was like, cool, this is this is that's a lot of oil.

Then I went back to to the the 1040 is what is what I'm running in and now it's it's mine in the Fiesta.

It's it runs a 5520, I think. Yeah, it's.

Ridiculous these days. It's just insane.

Like I, I, I didn't get it, but like, you know, I'm beating on it like, like, and when I have been on our favourite roads, you know, it, it stays at 80 to 90° in oil temp anyway.

And the oil pressure's always good because, you know, it tells you oil pressure. So, so yeah, I've got it's, it's

a hard one oil like, you know, people say, oh, always run a thin one or other people say, you know, always stick to the stick to stick to OEM spec. Yeah.

And then you get people that are like, no, you need to get this Rotella T6 that's actually for diesel engines and you put in your petrol engine and sorry bro, it's the coolest thing ever. It's like I I think as long as

the car's got lubrication. Yeah, well, I mean, that's a big

thing too. Yeah.

And, and a lot of people don't have, you know, you know, don't have oil in their cars. And, and like, like I had this

issue when I was first getting oil for, for my, for my lazy years ago. Like because it says they're on

a 1540 or a 1550. And I'm like, well, what do I

run at it? You know, like, you know, every,

you know, I'm like everyone's like, oh, that's a lot for a laser. Just just run a 530.

I'm like, no, but it's, it's specifically said in the book, you know, 1540, you know, you know, or, or, or equivalent.

So I've always been on the on the fence of and on the verge of staying within spec. So if, if a, if a, if a

manufacturer says, you know, you need to use a 530, use a 5:30 with a certain grade. And especially with modern cars

anyway, Scotty, like for example, with the Fiesta, with the, with the wet part, with the wet belt, it's got for the, for the oil pump that's got Tommy chamber.

It's got, it's got a Wet Wet belt for that.

If you use a different oil, it degrades that belt quicker.

So and then so like you need to use a specific, you know, 520 or a 530 people use a 530 as well. But the specific Ford graded oil

brought to not degrade, degrade the belt, which which is like, well, that scares you like because that only that and in a lot of ways that limits your options as to what you can put in it too. But same, same with VWS.

I've had this issue with VW since I started working.

That's super cheap. They're they're, you know, that

they have to run that 504507 VW spec car and they're always, always expensive and they're always using oil because they're VWS and they just burn oil. I'm not not ragging on VW here,

but you know, 9 out of the 10 times that people come in for an oil top up, I could, you know, it's a, it's a VW and they're like, oh, it's, it's a Jetta or it's a, it's a Basat or it's a golfer, it's a polar. And then they're like, oh, what

do I need? I'm like, you need a 530 long

life. And then they're like $30.00 for

one litre. I'm like, it's a, it's not a

cheap oil. You know, it's, you can go for

that or you can go for the new oil.

I'm trying to push the new oil now because it's a bit cheaper, but that's spec specific for them.

And it's really, it's really, it's really quite frustrating because they're like, we can't run anything else.

I'm like, you can, but it's not made for your car.

And then you get some people that are just like, no, I'm just putting the Gulf West in here. Yeah, the 2020 W 50.

Man, I've had that many people go the.

Motorola brand Motorola from Coles or something just to see.

And and look, you know, I get if you need to put that just to get you buy if you're absolutely desperate and you've got and you're not when you know, when you're even a servo that sells oil or anything and you're just like, I just got to put something in it. Cool, you know, but just but

like when in your car specifies it, it makes it bloody hard because you don't want to want, you know, stuff it up to, you know, if if you avoid your warranty and they and they and they do a, they do an oil check. Oh, look, he's running a bit

thick and royal. You know, we're not going to,

we're not going to, we're not going to, you know, vouch for your warranty, especially with car companies being being as they are today. So interesting, really, really

interesting. I think I think oil's a big

discussion in itself really. So I would what I always do is

like I always check the spec. I use the load the Lube guide.

So I'll go to like Castrol, you know, net net Lube or, or Castrol regen oil and Penn ride and that a new lawn and Valvoline and what else do we sell at super cheap?

We sell Mobil 1 stuff like that. I'll check their I'll check

their Lube guides just to make sure, because whatever they're saying is what is what you know, they've recommended like so if your engine blows up, don't look at me.

Look at, you know, the Castrol. You blame them.

You know, they're the one that's been the other one that they recommended it. So plus also like they deal with

this stuff every single day. So that's, it's kind of their

job to know what cars and what what your car should take.

So yeah, that's that's kind of where I think.

And another thing I get I get a question is my car's done 200,000 KS. What do I put?

I always say, well, stick to specification if this is a 530 or 530, but it's not 200,000 KS. I'm like, and my response is

like, well, you can't replace metal with oil.

Yeah, you just, you just can't. And then they're like, no, but

it would be easier on the engine.

Like, yeah, it'll, it'll help it.

And you know, a lot of a lot of old school mechanics will tell that as well. And mechanics in general will be

like, yeah, look, you know, you can't be done.

So what was that, sweetie? It'll help with lakes.

Yeah, yeah, correct. Your mechanic will be like,

look, your camera's done 4 million KS.

You can probably up it to a 1050, you know, a 10 W 40 instead of a, instead of a 530, you know, but the for the majority of especially modern cars now with such tight tolerances, I think you need to keep the spec just just because of how tight the whole tolerances are.

You know, it's, it's, it's one of those, it's one of those very you got to really pick your pick your battle situation.

Yeah, no, you're right. You're spot on.

You. You're better off.

And you know if it is, if you've got a problem where you're putting in that correct oil and it's leaking, then get the leak fixed and trying to do a temp. Yeah, correct.

Like I get all the customers coming, I just need some stop leak. I'm like, yeah, look, I always

say to them it's a temporary fix as soon as you change your oil.

You know, I mean, there's no even guarantee that this will work on the 1st go anyway, but they just put more bottles in there, it'll stop it. I make sure the car's just

running a stop leak, not even oil.

That's it. Yeah, so thick.

That stuff it's the like they use like the Lucas engine stable oil stabiliser. Or something.

That stuff's incredible. Actually.

I like, I remember watching years ago, we, we got invited over to a family friend's house and, and he was a Rep for, I don't think it was Lucas, it was another brand.

And he had what was called the machine.

And this machine was like, you know, you'd put a like he had Velvolee and like, like a Valvoline 10:30 and just just put it in the, you know, put in the machine and then and then a simulated metal and metal contact.

So it's like he put another like a metal rod onto it and you could hear the metal scraping. And then then he put this

additive, which is like a, you know, a oil stabiliser and, and you know, and, and, and forces as hard as he could.

And the, the, the metal to metal contact was non existent.

Essentially it was being played with mine.

I was like, my God, this is amazing stopping engine way this that and the other man. And like, I get it, It's cool.

Like I, I think it was like that really, really, really cool.

But you know, you can't, you can't repair cars with, with, with stop. Like, you know, it just, it just

doesn't, it doesn't it, it's, it's not a, it doesn't make sense in, in, in that instance. But also my, you know, I get a

lot of customers saying, Oh, my head gaskets gone.

I'm just, I'm getting it fixed, but I just need to, I need a temporary fix. And they, they put in that, you

know, the, the head gasket and I say, and I say to him, I warn him, I say, this stuff is brutal.

This goes through your whole cooling system, essentially.

You're doing this just to keep the car going for a little bit longer before it dies because like, because you, it's virtually impossible to flush it out.

It's all through your heater core, all through all your piping, all through your radiator, all through everything. It is it it works, but it's a

terrible thing, if you know what I mean.

Like it's just one of those, you know, it's, it's, if you're wanting to fix the car, it's I wouldn't do it.

But yeah, who am I to to say. What's your opinion on doing a

engine flush clean before fresh oil?

I think there's a caveat to it. I think if you're, if you're

doing regular oil changes, it's OK because I've heard some people do it with cars that have been really sludge and had a, had a, had a lot of missed, missed services.

And basically it's just removed the sludge to the bottom of the engine and that's been picked up in the oil pickup and it's caused the engine to start with oil.

I've heard those stories as well.

So I'm very, I like to be very careful about that sort of thing purely for the fact that I wouldn't unless your car's been, you know, you know, well maintained and looked after.

I'd run at the end, but apart from that I probably wouldn't just just in case. What about you Scotty?

What's your thought on it? I reckon if you're servicing it

regularly and on time I don't think you'd really need it.

You don't really I agree with that.

You don't really need to do it. My laser, I service it.

I service it every 10,000 on the dot.

And when we pulled the head off it and, and, or even pulled the valve cover off it, you know, it was spotless, like not a single inch of a sludge, like nothing. So it just shows if you service

your car regularly, you, you wouldn't have that issue.

Pull the pull the bottom and you have no sludge in the pan, no sludge anywhere. And that's just from regular oil

changes. And I barely use the the oil

flush. So yeah, it's it's just a, it's

one of those things, I think. Subaru do recommend upper

cylinder cleaner one but that's yeah the way the engine is because I used to buy this Subaru kitney will come with the official. It comes with a can that little

plastic straw that you. Put Yeah, yeah.

You sit there and squirt it all through, yeah.

And then they give you a fuel additive as well, just as a treat. I I think, yeah, if you're

regularly servicing your car, you don't need it, right?

But if you're, if you've got a car with a completely unknown history, that's most likely sludged up, the likelihood you're causing trouble is also very high.

It's it's kind of in that middle point of like maybe the car's gone a little bit long without a service, but it's still got a relatively good history. You might want to use it then,

because like you said, Maddie, if you basically dislodge just so much sludge and send it down to the oil pickup, you're screwed. But also if it's an unknown

history engine, that sludge might be the thing stopping like 20 different leaks. So you put the flush in and you

flush it real good, and now you know it's you've got a puddle left under your car every single time you park anyway, because you know, the car's got plenty of areas that just, you know, a little bit of sludge is kind of blocking that little.

Sludge could actually be the bearing that.

We want well, let's add to that point.

I love like the, you know, when you're, when you're doing a flush, OK, you know, like, and if you're really unsure, like the best thing to do is do the flush, empty it and pull the pair, you know, and just just just for safe, just just for safe measure, just pull the pan, put, you know, check it in there. OK, it's not too bad.

Clean it up, put a new gasket up the up the put the pan up again and then off you go. Yeah, yeah, it's I think that's

that's what's one of those. There there are other methods to

do it as well, like you can pour, you know, a good amount of diesel into the top. Don't start the car no and just

yeah, run it out the pan and then you've kind of washed out your pan. Some people they'll use where

the dipstick goes and kind of pour a stronger cleaner in there. Once again, just crack open the

the train plug and just pour it out rather than running the engine at all. It's just you're kind of

clearing out any last bits, any stragglers kind of in the pan, which isn't a bad idea as well as well, especially again, if you've got an engine where you don't know the history doing something like that. I think there's a video watch

from a guy named DIY Dave. No DIY Dave's a different guy.

He was initial Dave. A lot of Dave's on YouTube and

he had a, I don't know, yeah, the TRX, it's the one basically with the the four wheel drive. It was a really cute little car

and it was, it had been sitting down.

He saw it physically sitting outside a lady's house for like at least 10 years, I think not being started.

And he bought the Softail lady. So he already knew that the cars

sludged up all hell. And the first things he did was

he basically, yeah, put a little funnel where the dipstick goes and started pouring diesel and white spirit down there and then just drained it out, drained it out and got a bunch of sludge.

And you never had to start the car.

So you kind of, you know, that was his way of you deal with, deal with like the the flush aspect.

You're not flushing obviously a lot of the galleries and everything else, but you're at least flushing the pan out, which a lot of times can have or a lot of the the sludge and kind of the bottom amount, Yeah. 100% so yeah, it's it's an

interesting one. Let's Yeah.

I'm deep updates with you. Not a whole lot on my end

either, but now I can't figure out whether or not the Honda is now appreciating this mobile fuel from 7:11 and actually giving me better fuel economy, or it's that I think I've just hit better traffic this last week and a half.

So my last indicated was 6.9. You know litres per hundred KS

came to about 7 when I did the fill up.

Is that a? Is that a 1300 or 1500?

I don't know. 1.3 or 1.5. I think it's a 1.5.

OK, Yeah. I think it's 1.5, but it's tiny.

Yeah, it's tiny. When you're open the the bottom,

the battery's just like your hands.

Bigger than the battery. That's that's notorious.

This time the indicated is sitting at six.

So you know, if we travel it, maybe it's 6.1.

And again, I think I'd have to test it back to back a few more times. But if that's the difference of

a whole litre per hundred KS, you know, I think that's pretty significant. I can't, I can't 100%, you know,

attribute the whole litre per hundred KS to I think the mobile fuels, but that's like a 15% difference.

So I wish I had more consistent traffic to and from work.

I think the the start of February was starting school.

There's a lot more people just getting back into it, that sort of thing. Yeah, whereas it's calmed down

now we're in, you know, the third week of February.

So maybe that's the case. But if that's the case, I might

just start filling up it, you know, like that's, that's a reasonable amount. Obviously, Scotty, your mileage

was not as improved from from what you said.

Yeah, it's been odd. I feel like the last fill up I

did, I probably felt like I was probably exhilarating more harder, but it ended up being if I let it get going, I would have been about 500 KS out of the tank.

At the moment. This latest fill up that I've

done isn't on the same mark. It's actually less at the moment

where it's travelling so very up and down.

I don't. I can't pick it.

How many litres is a tank in the in the in the I?

Think it's only 50 something. Yeah, yeah, it's not.

It's not very big, but it's time.

Originally when I fill it up full, the range would read about four 490 something drop pretty quick, but now when I fill it up, it's reading about 506. So I don't know what's going on.

Yeah, I know the the Honda was very much the fuel light came on as it get to the pump and I was like, ah, yeah, I'll think about it. So I drove at least to work, at

least one trip to work I think. And then the next day was the

weekend, decided to fill it up and it was like 33 litres.

It was like, it must not be. I don't think it's a full 40

litres that tank. It'd probably be either just on

like you probably just had to reserve that 7, probably 7 litres of reserve. Yeah, but if that was the case,

you know, I got, I got over 500 I think or 490 ish on the 33 litres, which is, you know, pretty sweet.

That's very good. If I can get over 600 this time,

I'll be a happy boy. And then I have to fill up with

the other, you know, I'd have to fill up a Costco again, you know, try it again. See, we'll see what the traffic

is, see what the fuel economy is and then go back to 711.

By that time, I think my parents want the car back.

So I would have liked to have just done the experiment on the diesel. But they they fuel economy,

well, it's not guarantee. It's more of a fuel economy

promise, we'll call it. It only extends to the the

petrol variance. It does not extend to the diesel

at all. Question how many cases on that

jazz? I think it's like 108 or

something. No, it's.

Nothing. Yeah.

So that's that's kind of my updates.

Just fiddling around with fuel economy figures and stuff.

I always keep them. It's got like as the as jam

because we must call it the Prindle.

The Prindle, Yeah. Yeah, mine's apprentice because

it, it goes from D to sport mode.

I leave it in D and then I put there's an economy button as well. And I've noticed the economy

button does something like if I'm accelerating with or without the economy button, there's a bit of a, an elf difference.

And then the sport again it it keeps in high res, which is actually not bad. So, so the the economy gives you

3 of the 10 horsepower the car's got, and then the sport gives you 9 of it. And then when you put the air

con on, it takes takes nine of the 10 horsepower and you.

Takes it away. Yeah, that's probably got a bit

to do with it. I think I'm not running the air

con as much. OK yeah, because it's been a

little bit cooler this week. So it's so hard to like, like

you said, Scotty, like you try and make it consistent.

You know, my route to work is very consistent, this down the old Sydney Road. That's as far as I'll say in

order to not dox myself. But it's, yeah, it's pretty

consistent. Traffic is usually more or less

consistent, but some things, I guess just differ and you can't control it. Yeah.

Like if, you know, we're in the technical, we're still in summer, but it's been cold enough that, you know, some people have needed the heaters. So those sorts of things, you

know, have a massive impact. I wish I just wish like an

independent company that does field testing would actually take 7 or mobile or 711 up to task and be like all right, let's see the figures properly. Yeah, yeah, not that.

I mean, I, I enjoy filling up with 711, you know, I get a slush or something. Yeah, but.

Yeah, good. On the hot days, I'd grab one

of. Those too.

But yeah, it's, it's an intriguing kind of claim to make in this day and age to be like, hey, we've done something and we've we'll promise you that you'll get better economy if you fill up here. Well, it's, you know, it's, it's

a promise. So let's, yeah, it'll be

interesting to see. We should, we should probably

run an experiment one day and just put 10 litres in the car and just see, you know, how long we get and then you know, actually. That'd be a good video it.

Would be a great video. We could do like a Hume Freeway

run because it'd be very consistent.

Absolutely. On like, yeah, like a weekend

day. You know what?

See how far you got you. Can drain the drain the tank the

old way. Just imagine we're like lying

outside the 711, just, you know, like, so you're thinking, what are you doing? It's like, shut up, go away.

We're just doing a test. Experiment.

You're pouring petrol over the ground of not it's water.

Just use. The bucket that they have

without the water. Yeah, yeah, that'll work.

That laugh that about would be funny.

You remember Shell when they launched?

Was it 102 octane? I think it was the V Racing.

Yeah, you remember that? We had V power, I remember that

it was 98 but I don't I can't remember over 100.

Yeah, yeah, it was. Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was

called Shel V Racing and was the next one.

It might have been like 101 or 102 octane from memory.

Geez. And I filled it up a couple of

times because you'd get these cool collectible Ferrari cards.

Didn't last too long though. Yeah.

Probably that makes quite much. That would have been, I think,

when I had the black R34. Oh well.

So we're going pretty far back. Yeah, Yeah.

Because I was thinking like E85 has a run rating of 105.

So would this have some kind of mixture of ethanol or was it just they just did some kind of anti knock additives and they just bumped it up? Not sure, it was just called V

racing and it was like 101. There's like, put the number

off, they won't mind, they won't know.

Yeah, so everyone with performance cars then, because obviously there was no EA. And then, yeah, they were like,

sweet. Turns out it was just like E15

or something at the time cuz E 10s I think 94 octane.

So it's slightly better. I'm not going to say it's

better. It is slightly more resistant to

knock than 91 is and it's a few cents cheaper and yeah like I don't see a problem with it running it if you're running the car regularly. If you've got a car that sits

around. Yeah never.

But yeah, that, that that's a quite intriguing kind of system right there, yeah. Moving on with my car updates.

Not much. I'm planning on giving all the

cars a clean this weekend. Oh no, I do have an update.

I drove the scamp on the weekend.

I drove the Scamp on Saturday morning, probably to cricket.

And it's like come and test, test drive it, make sure it's OK before I send it off to get the roadworthy.

He's been adjusting the Carbi and then stuff like that and put 40 bucks of fuel in it. Quite it's quite literally got a

20 litre tank that's as big as it's got.

And then I started driving and I forgot, I forgot how fun and and you know, it's like it sounds like a little motorbike.

It's the funniest thing ever and you know, driving it drove great. It's you know, it's, it's, it's

got its issues. Like I forgot how bad 4 all four

drop brakes are. You actually really need to put

your foot on the brake to stop, which is which is fine.

But like your first time, you when you first drive it and you first put your from the brake, nothing's happening.

You're like, OK, I need to put more force.

But after that you get used to it.

And then I hop back in the laser and almost put myself through the windshield when I was when I went, when I went to brake for the first time. But that was all part of all

part of the fun, the yeah, so, so that's always done, which is, which is really, really good. But I can, I can finally see

the, you know, the light at the end of the tunnel.

My plan is to get that picked up and then drop the MR2 off so I can pull the motor and reseal it because the that that is leaking. No matter stop leak's going to

fix that one. So that's, that's my plan for

that. In terms of all the other cars,

yeah, I've really done much with them in terms of cleaning or driving or doing anything. I've just been, I've just been

flat out. I went to The Wreckers on

Friday, got some bits for there was an SR2, the jollies in Geelong. They had a black bumper because

my, my one, as you know, got got kind of kind of destroyed And I went to get there and someone it's, it's kind of a pen ahead of mine when you get to a wreckers and the, you know, they, they haven't removed it nicely, but they've, they've snapped it. We're trying to RIP it off and

broken the bumper. I'm like, that was a good bumper

I could have used. Now I can't use it.

So, so that's one of those, that's one of those things.

But but anyway, so, so I got a few bits and pieces, just getting some hard to get bits and you know, some trim pieces and, and stuff here and there and you're OK.

It's like, wow, it's 150 bucks. I didn't realise I spent that

much on just on just second hand pieces, but that, that's just how it is. So, so they'll, you know, I

started putting a few bits and pieces on the car, tidying it up. My plan is to get it, get it

PDR. I'm just trying to find a guy

that'll that'll PDR it because I want to take it off the road very shortly, probably by the end of the year, so I can start driving my other cars a bit more and get that on a club plate because that'll be club plateable next year.

So yeah, that's pretty much it on my end.

Gentlemen. Now boys, I wanted to talk to

you about a couple of things. Firstly, I want you to tell us

your most elaborate car buying story and how and why you chose to buy that car and then how you got it and how you got it to, to to your driveway essentially. So Scotty, I know you're, you

were the big 34 man and I wanted to ask you when you what, at what point did you realise you wanted to get A34 GTR?

And, and at what point do you say, Yep, I'm going to do it?

And, and how did you, how did the process go for go for use?

I'm going to ask you that, Alan, I'm going to ask you about your WR, your first WRX purchase because no, so your first Falcon purchase actually, because because that was, that was, that was your first car. And I'll talk about one of my

cars as well. So it's not useful.

So your 34 GTR. So what made you get a A34 GTR

And basically what, well, how did it happen?

Like you know from start to finish.

I guess I was a fan of Skylines to begin with and joined the Skylines Australia forums and to begin with I wanted to get my first car. This was when I was still on PS

from memory and I got a four door R34.

It was non turbo. Was driving around that for for

a bit and just working my little butt off and I thought I really like the 30 fours. So I'll take the next step up

because I still saw GDRS as out of my reach.

You know, I'm still just, I think I was casual or maybe part time. And so I thought, OK, you know,

this is what I want. So I was hunting for that and

got the 34 GTT and then you know, I landed a full time job slowly checking them out. Just having a look at the

market, what was available here in Australia and their prices.

But obviously having a look at the auctions, they were cheaper.

I wouldn't say substantially cheaper, but still cheaper nonetheless. And I thought this way I get a

choice of the colour, they do a thorough check and everything like that. So I'm pretty sure Skyline's

Australia forum led me to Iron Chef Imports.

They might have been a sponsor or something.

I think there was a few people that used them in the past and that's what kind of led me to them.

It was either it was a toss up between them and I'm pretty sure jspec is another good one from memory too.

So all I did was just, I, I just sent an email about what, about what I was after and I, and I said my budget, so my maximum.

And I said, OK, that's fine. You'd be able to get one between

this and this. And you just had to pay the fee

for start. I can't remember how much it

was, but you just had to pay that.

I thought, OK, no worries. And you fill out a form and say

kind of what colours you're after and you got to put in your budget again. And then every day they'll send

through the list of cars coming through auction that fits that fits that bill. So, so hang on, so because your

one was quite a quite a special car with the colour, they nearly made 300 of them Midnight purple too, right?

Yeah. So did you specifically put

midnight purple too? Not get into that bit, OK.

So something bit something bit different happened with that.

OK, so you know, I'm, I'm searching along and there's, there's some good ones that are popping up and you know, some V mainly V specs and V spec twos were popping up everywhere.

You know, you quickly send another email through and say, yeah, interested in that one. Most of the time I was a little

bit too slow. So you know, but it was just

that excitement of just saying, Oh, I know what's on the list this time and having a look what's available.

Most of them going out of price. I'm not 100% sure how long it

took, but you know, I'm still looking and then all of a sudden I just get a random email from them and they go hey, we just got we just through auction. Just got AR 34 GDR.

It's not V spec or anything, but it's in midnight purple too.

It's probably got about 100 and something thousand KS.

His a couple of pictures if you're interested.

I'll get you tonnes more and they're like, look, this is well into your budget. They've never seen one at this

price before. He still remembers this one.

That's how much the price was. So, so Scotty, just clarifying,

have they had bought this car at this point?

Are they are they already bought it?

OK. Yeah.

So they already got it because they put a bid through and they're just amazed that it went through for that price.

So they already got it and I was just lucky enough that they're like, hey, he's been looking for a bit, so we'll give him first dibs. I saw it, saw the photos and I

don't, something clicked and I thought that that is the one, you know, it's, I think I've done it through most of the process of my cars. Something clicks that makes me

know that that one is that one's mine.

Like I meant to have it and I just said, yeah, that's it, I'll take it. They sent through tonnes more

photos, like I'm talking all underneath the whole interior.

The only thing that was was not in good condition was just the side bit on the seat, on the driver's seat.

Everything else was sweet. So I'm like, yeah, I'll take it.

They're like, OK, no worries, leave it with us.

You'll start getting some forms and things like that.

They'll start coming through. You just got to, you just got to

pay it. Got the got the loan that I

needed. That wasn't too tricky.

They helped me out with it for for what it was.

That was just to buy the car outright.

So I did that, transferred that and then it was just it was just the waiting game then. So straight onto the ship it

comes over. They already did tell me it

needed some new new suspension as it was leaking.

Like that's fine. Thanks for the heads up.

I got the coil overs, paying the taxes and stuff as it comes through customs and then they do the clean and everything too that you pay for and that goes straight off to get complied.

The place was really good that did the compliance.

So just just the usuals, they had to put in the child restraints. They have to go into every

single one for compliance. You know, the Anchorage, the

child Anchorage restraints. So they have to go in brand new

ties all round. And he said, look, you'll need

new shocks and that too. And I said, I've got I've got

these new boil overs ready to go.

And he goes, oh, OK, no worries. And just kind of said that's

fine, we'll let it, we'll let it go because you've already got those, so we're not going to pay for new new shocks and then you're just going to throw these anyway.

And then I finally got the call and I said hey, it's it's ready, then come and pick up so. Have you seen the car at this

point in in real life? I hadn't seen it in person.

No, had not seen it. Just pictures.

And that was just the pictures of it in Japan.

That's it. So it wasn't like, because it

was right on the other side of the, of the city and I just, I didn't have time to go and check it out or anything like that.

So it was finally done. Go over there to pick it up.

It was probably like 3 or 4 in the afternoon.

It was near the end of the day and I just walk in there and, you know, they got Toyota chases and everything all in there.

And then just when I first see it, the first thing I realised is, gosh, it's actually very small.

I just pictured this R34 GTR from the pictures.

It was like a very big car, but it.

Doesn't affect cars and everything.

Yeah, but it's yeah, it was, it was very small.

It was like, oh, you know, I was that excited right then and there. I called up RACV and bang

insured it straight away, had the permit and stuff so I could drive it because it didn't have number plates or anything.

Had to do that afterwards and at that point I had to go to Brodie and that to do that. The good thing about that was

that all they do is ask how much did you pay for for that car?

You can put down whatever price you think.

It suits. It's a it's a 1999 Nissan, Yeah.

You could put down. Pay $400.00, put down whatever.

You could put down whatever because there's no, there's no proof. They don't ask for proof or

anything. You just write down whatever,

keep the cost down a bit. But it was, it needed fuel.

It was definitely low. And I remember putting in there

to fill it up and I'm like, Oh my God, like this is back back then. It's hitting like 100 bucks and

it's still filling up like. How empty?

Is this thing? I thought, no, that's enough.

But yeah, I was just so excited, like it didn't feel, it didn't feel real. Drove it home and everything and

it was just sitting there at the front and I'm just sitting at home and just constantly looking out the window at it, you know?

It was completely stock, like stock exhaust, stock suspension.

There was no mods done to it at all.

You open the engine Bay, nothing.

Stock air box, nothing can be done, nothing touched.

So it was pretty much a clean slate.

And that's pretty much the first car which I technically learned to drive manual. OK.

I had I had before, but I've never owned a manual, a manual car. So this is like proper proper of

having one. So you know, I guess I could

tell people I kind of learnt to drive manual properly in our 34 GDR and it was, it was very easy to learn in, it was very easy.

The quality for giving car from what I've from what I've read.

Yeah, yeah, it was a little bit temperamental when it was cold.

If you put in neutral and try to get into first, it's it's a little bit grumpy and didn't really like to go into first.

So it would take maybe 3 or 4, four goes to get in there and it goes, OK, I'll go into first for you and I'll slide in.

Yeah. I mean the whole time I owned it

I only stole it once and that was because I thought I had it in first but it was in 3rd. I've done that.

Because I just didn't want to go into first so and it was in 3rd instead. So I took off, went at the

roundabouts. So, but yeah, that was the whole

experience. It was time flew by when I was

waiting for it to come. And you know, I, I put up the

black R34 up for sale and then it crashed at the accident.

So I got paid out for that one instead of selling it.

I wish I removed some of the stuff from it.

Would have got some more extra money from it, ripped out those Defy gauges in it. But yeah.

And I don't think it was too far until it it did arrive and then the process was even with Vicroads it was it was pretty easy. So from start to finish, like

from the said, for the moment you said, Yep, I want a 34 GDR till you got it, you're getting about three months.

Yeah, I mean, there was no hold UPS or anything.

So I'll probably say until it was sitting, sitting in my driveway, maybe two to three months.

Yeah, that's pretty good. Yeah, that that was when you

could just, you know, compliance, bang, bang, bang, everything done pretty quick. There was no dramas or anything

like there is now where it's more of a slow process.

And yeah, government's just a lot worse now, I think.

Yeah, everyone was importing. You could get chases for 10

grand. All day.

All day chase that easy, easy 10 grand and that's for a good, good one. Good one.

Yeah, I remember looking at them.

I was like, oh, this would be pretty cool daily.

It was like a really nice green 1, completely stock 10 grand.

That's a lot of car, isn't it? Yeah.

Yeah, that would have been good. The good old days, that is.

Yeah, the good old take. Take us back, Scotty, take us

back. Finally I could a.

Bit of time machine I would. Yeah, instead we're stuck in the

era where buying a car on GTA Online can cost you $60.

Yeah, I wish I had the income that I've got today.

Yeah, I had back then. Yeah.

Won't be set the amount of cars I'll be going through.

If if the prices were the same as they were back then, would you have bought it? Would you?

Would you buy 1 today? Would you buy another 34 GTR

today? Yeah, yeah, No question.

I would happily have one. I just loved everything about it

driving that car. I love the sounds, everything

that I made, the little pops that it did through gear changes, you know, coasting down the hill.

I'll just leave it in 3rd or 4th.

Sometimes it would just pop, pop, pop while it goes down.

That's it. That's the only modification

that I had. It had a Nismo ACU.

Oh. Cool.

Yeah. So obviously it chewed through a

bit more fuel and had the speed limiter and that removed.

Which? You know what?

I know it was removed like I didn't test it or anything but.

Mexican. That's what they do Nismo acus

as they remove that. In Mexico, obviously, you know

you'd find that out. Yeah, On the racetrack it's

very, very stable at high speeds.

Like surprisingly stable. I could drive it with one finger

stable. Yeah, they're a special car,

definitely a special car. Just unfortunately, they're just

ridiculously pricey now, but that's.

I just I can't comprehend the price.

I think if I could I I wouldn't mind the 33 GDR.

It's the only one I've never owned.

Yeah. I don't count the 35.

No, technically I'm not a skyline so.

Yeah, 33 would be good. Yeah, 33 would be cool.

Series 3R33 GDR for me would be yeah that's my dream GDR.

One day. One more so you you can pick

whatever car you want to tell about your your purchasing story and, and and what what made you say, oh, you know, I want this.

Look, I've gone through the MX Five Storey I think a time or two already. Yeah, basically secretly bought

that in country Victoria and stashed at my sister's house and for a few months. Which you use as blackmail

against you for a while. Yeah, Yeah, that was a pretty

good story I think. But we'll go with the the old

blue Rexy. Yeah.

So this would have been 2000. You're gonna start the story,

Alan, by going. I was just laying back vaping

one day. I thought, you know what?

WRX is what I need. So this would have been, I think

2014, yeah, like the air towards the end of 2014.

I I think I was working with Dad.

I've been working with Dad for about 6 months.

Was it kind of out of uni? Going back to different uni and

I just gained my full licence a short time earlier.

Also about to gain. How many years do we stay on our

peas again? 4 so I'm just trying to do the

maths quickly. So I've been on my full licence

I think for a year or bit of a year because I think I got my peas in 2010. Yeah, called the end of 2010

somewhere in there. Let's let's not get bogged down

the details. Basically I had finally got my

full licence and we were finally actually allowed to drive good cars. Before that I had had my BFE gas

socket, which despite having a minor incident in a, in a bus stop, you know, on a rainy day, you know, served me quite well.

But I'd grown tired of one and automatic and two, you know, something that realistically didn't have enough power for me.

So I, I started investigating like I, I was a little bit more wary because I feel like when I bought my Falcon, I made a mistake. I rushed into a car because I

just wanted a car and I could have possibly gotten maybe an XR6 or something of that nature instead of just an E gas.

I wasn't ready for a gassy and nor did I do the case for worth a gassy. So this time I was kind of more

on a lookout. But I did start getting a little

desperate. I almost said yes to a Pulsar.

What is it? An N14 Pulsar with ASR 20 Det

swapped in cool, which was blowing the doors off and forth.

Yeah, you know, probably wouldn't have been the smartest car to buy. Probably a car that I would have

gotten a big old yellow sticker on.

Oh. Yeah.

But yeah, so I've been, I've been looking for a few months.

I kind of just wanted a nice manual car with a turbo on it.

And that's kind of my requirement.

And at this point, Rexy has kind of gotten cheap enough.

What I'd actually been looking at was Bug Eyes because they were sitting at that kind of $7000 ish mark.

That was pretty. Yeah, that was pretty reasonable

for for a bug. I rexy.

And it wasn't the exact rexy I wanted, but you know, it was a it was a price that I could kind of finagle and, you know, scrounge around and get together and, and buy.

But being, you know, a brown young man in a brown family, you run these things through your family.

And I was sure my dad some some Rexy's and he just wasn't feeling them. And then I was like, well, you

know, these ones are nice. I start showing the BLOB eyes,

which are a little more expensive.

There was a silver BLOB eye in I think somewhere in like Eltham and they had like 170,000 KS and go on to like 12 or something for it. And it seemed all right.

But then a blue one popped up and this one had 212,000 KS, so quite a bit higher. But it's, it was like, I think

just over 10 plus on roads. OK.

And I showed my dad the photos and something sparked in him about it. He was kind of the catalyst

because I was just like showing him cars, hoping for the best.

Like maybe he'll consider something, you know, say yes and I'll go, you know, spend the monies.

It'd be great. But something sparked in him and

he said, what time is it? And it was, you know,

afternoonish about 2:00 on a weekend.

And he's like, call him up, see if it's available.

I called him up. It was available.

And he's like, let's go check it out.

So we drove on into the city and went to Lorbeck Luxury Cars to find out that, you know, the owner's son was, you know, playing gangster on his daddy's turf and running his own little car outfit. You know, it was one of those I

pulled myself up by my bootstraps in my dad's multi $1,000,000. You know business.

I'm assuming that's strious. No hate to the kid, but you

know, it is what it is. So I saw this.

We, you know, my dad was basically, he saw her on the outside, popped the hood, started the car up and he was ready to say yes already. I'm like, hang on, can we test

drive this thing just to make sure it doesn't actually, you know? Blow up.

Blow up and he's like all right, fine, we'll go for a test drive.

And it was during that testing. Well, he's just having a look

and he's happy with it. I start playing around with

things, I see that the air conditioning's not working.

I was like, well, that's something like you guys are going to get a re gas. What's the deal?

And they said, yeah, we'll get it ready.

So I think if I hadn't have brought it up, they wouldn't have done it. No, no way.

They just wouldn't have done it. And we, we went for the test

drive and my dad tried to treat it like a truck, which you cannot treat, you know, a, a turbo car like a truck.

And he was, you know, not happy. He was like, he was lagging the

engine a bit. And I was like, just drive

properly, Dad, come on. And I was like, can you leave it

in a second and kind of Rev it up?

And so he was like, all right, I'll do it once.

So he throws it, leaves in a second, starts driving it up, and that's when the torque starts kicking in.

And he's like, no, no, no, we're not doing this.

Let's go back to the diction. We're like, why you do this?

I want to see what the car can do.

But that was good enough, you know, because I couldn't drive a manual. I had done like, a manual lesson

with a instructor and then drive my uncle's car like, a handful of times at best. So I was a full automatic guy.

We come back, do some shrewd negotiations where my dad does he's this was not the first time he did it.

He pulled out a credit card to buy this car, which is, you know, much of the chagrin of the guy of the young man who earned or whose dad are in displaced because credit card fees are significant when you're buying something at the value of a car.

But you know, shrewd negotiations.

We did it with the Falcon. We did it with this stick, you

know, if you your persuasive off, you're like, I'll buy this car on a credit card whether you like it or not.

You know, you starting to walk away.

They they accept. There's there's a bit of a

negotiation with the fees, but we managed to get it for I think 10,500 on the road. Pretty good.

Yeah. And then I said, well, we'll get

the car, you know, fixed up ready with the roadway certificate and we'll call you when it's ready.

So we paid for this car like on the spot and go home and it's been like, you know, 3-4 days and I'm like, oh, I kind of like my car now. So I call them up.

They're like, Oh yeah, this. I call up the actual young man

who's, you know, who's dead in the place.

And I was like, hey man, where's my car?

He's like, oh, sorry man, I'm going to Japan.

I'm going to be buying, you know, a couple 100 grand worth of cars. And I'm like, I didn't ask you a

life story, buddy. Like I just want to know where

my car is. He's like, Oh yeah, didn't the

guys tell you? Yeah, it needs, I think I need

like a rear tyre or something for the roadworthy.

We're getting on it. You know, we'll get it to you

soon. And at this point, I'm like,

look, man, I just want my car. And he's like, look, we'll get

it to you, don't worry. I think a week and 1/2 had

passed. And I was like, hey, guys, I

want this car. I want my money back.

Like, come on. Yeah.

And they're like, yeah, we're just sorting it out.

Sorry. And I think the next day I got

the call, like, yeah, the car's ready to pick.

I'm like, finally, like we, we do close soon.

So, you know, I'm like, no, I'm coming.

I'm coming. Yeah.

You know, don't you be, don't you be trying to get away with this because I think somewhere in there, I had actually gone there to pick up the car and it wasn't ready.

So I'd been like, I just remember driving back really angry from there and my dad had to swap out drivers.

He's like, no, we, we basically stopped off the, we got off the Westgate Bridge and onto, I think it was Miller's Road on that traffic light. I got out, he hopped in and we

got back on the bridge on the Westgate Ferry because I was just so upset. He's like, I don't want you

driving. But finally we go pick it up.

And my dad was like, look, I'll drive the car home and I'm like, OK, fine. And I took the Falcon home and

it was what it was. I, I started it up.

We, we made the demobilizer go haywire because I thought the car was getting hijacked. Just had one of those brand

alarms in it. And we didn't know that if you

open the door and just close it again, it thinks it's being hijacked. And then, you know, we couldn't

get it started again. So that was a bit of a, a

hiccup, but you know, we figured it out the next morning.

It was a Sunday. I think he'd gone to the temple

with my mum and he said, wait till I come back and I'll teach you how to drive it. And I was like, you know, I'm

up. It's like 1112 somewhere around

there. They're already at the temple.

I'm like, then I'll be back for two hours.

Like I can't, I can't wait two hours.

That's like half of my life. So I hopped the Rexy and I was

like, look, I did that lesson that one time, you know, a few months ago. I'm sure I can.

I can make it work. Anyhow, thrown into reverse kind

of took it down the drive and to the credit of the guy who did the lessons with me, I think his focus was getting me to stop, start, or move off smoothly and I did that just fine.

My problem arose is the shifts in between.

Whereas I was the 1st shift I did, I licked by the clutch very quickly because I was like Oh well I already started off, I don't need to lick off the clutch smoothly anymore.

And it just jerked. I was like, oh, that's not good.

So I, I limp from my house in Rockford Park to my friend Daniel's house in Trachyon, limp it all the way there.

I'm like, Daniel, can you teach me how to drive this car?

And he's like, I just got up. What are you doing?

And his dad, who's also a big car guy, he's like, oh, nice car. I was like, you want to take it

for a drive? And he's like, sure.

So I hopped with him. He drove in the, hopped in the

driver's seat, took for a drive and he obviously drove very smoothly and nicely. I was like, man, I want to be

able to do that, sorry. By that time we get back to the

house, Daniel's obviously brushed his teeth and, you know, washed his face, hops in the car and we go up driving towards basically we hop on the freeway, go up towards beverage, you know, do a bit of a loop around there.

I have my first heel start which is a a big difficulty.

It's a terrifying experience. Your first heel start isn't.

It yeah, especially when there's a car behind you yeah.

And yeah, like that was, that was basically the start, you know, within couple of weeks, I was kind of getting my groove into it. So I'd started, I, I proceeded

from letting the clutch out immediately, jerking the shit out of it to letting the clutch out very, very slowly, having the res drop on me and then pick up again.

I found that to be a safer experience that's very least while I was laying. But I was like, I'm not, I'm not

that smooth that I want to be. And I wasn't kind of finding the

understanding for it. Yeah.

Until one day I was in the local area and there was a car full of lovely young ladies. And there were a couple of cars

ahead of me in the next lane and I wanted a better look.

And so they go off on their automatic after the light turns green. I'm like, damn, I need to catch

up to these ladies. So I started, I'm like, you know

what, I'm going to row through these gears.

I'm going to do it a bit faster. And as I was doing it, the car

was actually shifting very, very smoothly.

And I was like, damn, this is actually nice.

And so I did it a few more times.

I obviously had my lovely glance at the girls.

They were very lovely, you know, God bless them.

But you know, I went on to to do my own thing.

And then I practised that a few more times, like kind of finding that point of the rest of the engine and the rest of the transmission are kind of In Sync.

You can kind of let it the clutch nice and easy.

And you know, you're not kind of doing it too slowly, but you're not doing it too fast either. You're not, you know, throwing

the clutch nice and easy, nice smooth shift.

So that was kind of my trial by fire of, of, of learning, you know, how to drive a manual. And you know, my, my lovely

Rexy. So it's not as cool as Scotty's

learned to drive, their GTR learned to drive manual, and GTR I learned to drive manual and Rexy, But I think that's still cool. Still.

Pretty cool. That's cool, but.

How many people could say they've learned to drop in a Japanese performance car? Not many.

No. So, you know, that's a bit of a

win. Absolutely.

What story? I think we heard the Typhoon 1A

little recently. Yeah, we do see the Typhoon 1A

What made you choose that one? Were you looking for it?

Initially, yeah, so. Laser the MR2.

I don't think I've heard the MR2 full story.

So well, the answer was COVID. So, so like I, I, I messaged the

guy. The answer is I messaged the guy

like was we, it came up online as soon as we went into lockdown, the first lockdown. And I'm like, oh crap, I can't

leave 5 KS for our house and stuff.

And it was actually a car that was brought up on the show for car of the week on on the Sunday.

And I'm like, this is sick as the guy is like, it's OK.

I live in Sydney now. I don't leave, even leaving.

Well, when the car's at my dad's place, I'm like, yeah, you're like, you bastard, You're able to go out of your house where we're stuck here. I'm like, look, I really like

first dibs at it. Once I, you know, once, once

we're that out of there, I was like, yeah, no worries.

Cool. He's like, he's like, the reason

I put back up online is because a guy from the army put a deposit on it, but but couldn't, couldn't end up getting it.

So, so he, he pissed off and then, you know, put the car back up for sale. I'm like, OK, cool, I'm like do

not sell up from underneath me. I really want to look at the

car. I want first dibs like Yep, no

worries. And to be to to his credit, he

got a lot of calls and he and he kept me his first dibs finally get out after like was it 6 months of me just seeing I had this tub open on car sales of this stuff is one MR2 for like 6 months and I'm like, I'm going to go check that car out.

I'm going to each other. So like the day quality the day

we're laid out. I said to I said to Ed and I

think Tyrone was there as well. I'm not like I'm like, I'm

checking this car out. You guys can come.

If you don't, I don't care. It's like, no, we, we need to

get out of the house as well. So let's go.

And I get there and I see it. I see it in the guys.

It's on the other side of the city.

It was in Knox and I see it in the in the guys garage.

You got the garage, but it's kind of like a little bit out, but not all the way out. And I have a look at my car.

Yeah, it's, it's pretty tidy. You know, it's actually, yeah,

it's not perfect, but it's, but I knew that going into it.

You know, the guy comes out with a walking stick.

He can barely walk the pool bloke.

And he's like, yeah, you know, he's like, I can't even get in and out of this car anymore. I'm a bit, I'm a bit of an old

man. This, that yellow.

I go to start the car and it doesn't start.

But yeah, so that's how I ended up with the, with the MR2 later, all those years later, I'm like, I always wanted one.

And when I saw Anthony put that one up for his car of the week, I'm like, you bastard, I want that.

imagining, you know, it'll be like a a Nissan Mitsubishi Evo, VTech powered, you know, skyline or some description.

It'd be it'd be really cool. Imagine what they could do.

Like these are three companies that we idolise as kids, right?

Yeah, like imagine the power that they could do.

But it's it's just, it's a mouth watering proposition like.
