This is professional radio. Has front wheel drive, but if
you got anyone you want to think.
Just myself. And now we'll do the after
hours. Gentlemen, what would you go
for? Thanks.
S in there. OK.
And because there's not a supercar, there is.
It's not ordinary. Perfection comes in the form of
two letters A&U. Long live my TD.
Welcome to Carter is Wednesday night for a change.
Here, here on the interwebs. It's me, Maddie Jay online with
Scotty Johnson and Mr Edward Bunting.
How are you, gentlemen? Good evening, Matthew.
Good evening, Scott. Good evening all.
I'm doing quite well. Thank you very good very good.
Sorry for my one day lateness. I had my my school's art show
and was not able to make it so but but you know how we are on Car Talk we we we always venture to to ensure that our listeners get good quality listening and you know and every every week we we never to do such such greatness.
Gentlemen, let's crack on with some car updates then.
Mr Button, you just saying before the show Falcon gone?
Yeah. So the esteemed gas Falcon
purchased from the family of alum Deep Singe, a regular on this very podcast. I sent it out to Grey's Auctions
and it sold a few days back. So yeah, this is a small profit
in and nothing crazy. But as I was saying to me, it
paid for my fuel to drive it to Canberra and back and you know I did a did a couple of tanks in it and that's it.
It can go to a new home. So that ones, that one's in the
traffic car updates. The Suzuki Swift Lyla, I've put
on car sales so that's online. I've had a couple of inquiries.
One looked at that yet and the Honda Jazz.
I've put on car sales snowing. Again, couple of inquiries, but
no one's physically come to look at it yet.
But I think the fact that I'm getting a little bit of interest in both shows that they're not crazily priced or anything.
You know, they're. I think they're fair.
I did purchase another car last Friday night.
I don't know if we would have caught up on that.
I got a little tip off about a BMW and normally I wouldn't buy a BMW, but I thought, oh, what kind of like this?
So this is a. 2/19/95 BMW 316. TI compact which is the little
hatchback one and it's the base model of the little hatchback one. It's pretty much the most base
BMW I think you could buy at the time so it has cloth trim and yeah it's the the the things I liked about it are it's a purply blue metallic. It's astral blue or something
it's called which is quite a nice colour and the interior is a really light kind of grey, but the seats are bright blue cloth like. It's got a contrasting seat and
carpet colour, so it almost looks a bit individual but.
I actually think it was a standard, you know, choice from the range back then. But the fact that it's got this
Purpley Blue Metallic on the outside and it's got the blue cloth seats and the light grey dash and everything, it's quite attractive in in the colour scheme.
It's got a factory sunroof and it's got the number plates BMW 316. O'Connor went no, this is, this
is kind of a cool little car and it's old school, it's E36 chassis, so it's just old school, 4 cylinder auto, everything, but so it's not, it's not a fast car but it's been very well maintained in terms of, you know, shocks and tyres and stuff's always been done to it.
I've got a whole stack of receipts right back to where it was new and consequently it drives really well.
It's very tight and there's no horrible creeks or rattles or noises or anything like that. So I look all rock around in
that for a a little bit till I sell those other two maybe.
And then and then I'll flog. The beamer's going in for a
roadie check first thing tomorrow.
Actually, I've gotta take it in for a roadie check in the morning. How many clicks are on that?
It's done 187, so not in pays for a 95.
It's quite good. That's pretty good, yeah.
Yeah, that's what I thought and two owners.
But the second owners, people I bought it off, had it since nearly knew it was only four years old or something when they got it. So you know, 3 keys, all the
books, factory mats, that's it's kind of a cool little car.
I'm a man and I have one of those in an auto white with the red leather interior and leather door cutting.
Yeah, yeah. Oh, you remember the car, Scotty
Borax car. Yes, yeah, it's her quite well,
despite it being slammed and everything, but it was.
I remember him telling me that the rear end in those is E30 resuspension, which? Which was?
Right. I think it's sort of E36 in some
parts and E30 in, yeah, because they wanted to keep costs down and happy. So I think that's right.
So look, it's fairly basic, but it's still a solid little machine and it holds the road really well as they as they did when they're well maintained. You know they always felt good
in corners and stuff. So it's certainly still has that
balanced feel to it that all Beam is a renowned for, but but you know not all of them keep it because they're just not so serviced, right. So that's the latest
acquisition. What else can I tell you the
Moke is nearly done. I was almost able to pick that
up tonight, but it's going to happen on the weekend.
So the guy that's had it, Mr Moke Central has done all the front suspension. And you know, he's fixed the
rear lights and he's fixed the washer switch and you know, just blah blah blah, a whole list of stuff that I gave him.
Exhaust leak. He was working on that today.
So yeah, hopefully on the weekend I can train out and grab that and then that'll go in for Roddy.
That'll be the next thing. After that it should be pretty
much right, right? Like I should be ready to go.
Yes, like it'll it'll be a lot better.
There's still things I wanna do that, like the the the aim with him was to get it. To a.
Roadworthy standard where I can sort of put it in and and pretty much know that it'll pass. So suspension, brakes, tyres,
you know, lights, all working, you know, all that stuff.
There's still, I wanna put extractors on it and A and an exhaust that doesn't leak. They always leak on the flange
because it's a very straight exhaust and then it goes up into a bendy bit and if that's not perfectly aligned because the motor moves and stuff, then it leaks.
And so it's doing that now and I think he's fixed it, but I still think it needs extractors and and it needs a bit more work on the tuning to get it running really sweetly.
So there's and I want to put a temp gauge in an oil pressure gauge in it, which again, they're not there now, but once it's Rd where they'll get him, maybe for another round to do that stuff. When there's not, I mean,
there's not pressure now, but it's just where do you stop?
You've sort of got to just get on the road and then and then I'll deal with other stuff. So there's still a few things to
to be done on it. What are?
Some gauges are pretty easy to install.
I did the one in the forest type because they don't have a bloody gauge. It's got a light which glows red
and it's already too late. Which is?
Just yeah, that's right. Stupidest thing ever.
But anyway, I put one in and they're pretty easy to put in there. They're quite simple.
So where would you mount it? Would you have on a cup?
On the dashboard or underneath or.
I know exactly where I'll put it because what someone's done the the Moke has a central binnacle with the Speedo and the choke cable coming into it and a couple of warning lights to the right of that. Someone has fitted an
aftermarket button for the windscreen washers.
So the the original switch is part of that binnacle and that's broken which is quite common on them.
They're just plastic and they go bit a bit brutal over the years, so someone fitted. You'll have to mark it sort of
just push button switch on the side.
So I said to the moke guy will reinstate the original switch, replace that, that frees up that spot where there's already a hole in the side of the binnacle.
Let's mount a double gauge pod there, just sort of subtly.
I don't care if it's one on top of the other, one next to each other, probably one on top of the other would look better.
And yeah, we'll just put in some of those video or Smiths gauges, you know paint this around to match in the silver and it'll it'll just blend. And most people with Mokes have
done that because they came with nothing, like you got no oil pressure, you got no temp. You literally have zero like my
Mini. It's got, it's got a fuel gauge.
That's it. So you've got, it's got a normal
pressure light. The Moke has no oil pressure
light but but not a gauge. So I just think it's.
Yeah, before I go ham driving it halfway across Australia, I really would like an oil pressure gauge in a temp gauge.
So you kind of know what's going on.
Yeah, so that's what I'm that's what I'm gonna mount those.
Yeah, I think that's, I think that's a good idea.
Like it's, you know, devaluing the car.
I don't think Edward. You're no God.
No, no, no, no you. Can it's a yeah it's it's a nice
addition especially for Kyle. It doesn't have anything like
that because you're able to to tell when it needs to get done etcetera. So it's it's really you know
like and you can check on the songs like if it's something to ever hate. You know you haven't cooked your
engine while Tommy, you pick. No, exactly.
Exactly. For for a couple 100 bucks
engages and stuff, it's. Like.
No, I I I want that because it's just, yeah, it's just Peace of Mind and and it's old and British and you know you kind of want that. Having said that, you know, I
mean I haven't had that in the Mini and I was going to say the Mini's been fine. It has overheated twice over the
years. The first time I did a head
gasket years ago when I first started using it after I got it because it hadn't been used a lot And the second time was not that long ago when it obviously it had a radiator leak or and get overheated coming back from a mates house and I sort of first saw a bit of steamy stuff and then I just kept driving it like but, but, but, but, but I thought all right something's not happy. And then I pulled in and it was.
Yeah, bone dry, so. That was, yeah, Touchwood.
It didn't do any damage. You know, I I got it soon
enough. But if I'd had a gauge then I
would have gone, oh, hang on, she's getting a bit hot before before steam starts coming out. You know, you know about it.
So you kind of you kind of want that.
That's those cars. And I think, I think that's it
The the how much were they new like the on other compacts were like the cheapest way to get into BMW.
Yeah, it's a good question. I think they were somewhere in
the 40s, OK, we're just starting back in the 90s.
Like in 1995, you sort of take what you would have paid for an E36 three series, which probably would have been in the 50s.
I seem to remember the compacts being like 47 or 44 or 46 or something like that. I'll have a actually I have.
I'll have a look while we're on this.
I'll report back on that. Sounds good.
Scotty updates with you man. Me.
I was doing a little bit of 31 fiddling on the weekend.
Just getting the globes. Put the new headlight switch
stalk in. That was easy.
That gave me lights. Headlights worked.
Put in the new high beams. Then I noticed that my front
driver side indicator wasn't working.
Got this damn car. And then I was like, well, this
is this is weird because I I could have sworn it was working at some stage. So pull it out.
How? Look at the globe.
And the globe was was done inside.
There was blown and corroded on the bottom.
I thought, OK, maybe I was wrong that it was working.
I don't know. Bought all new globes that
bought the H ones. Two that I needed for the high
beams and portal that put all that in, screwed it back in, tried the indicator, nothing. Ohk so you know when you got
that problem and it flashes really fast.
Yeah. So it's doing that like, oh OK,
have a look at the connector and follow the wires.
Had a look underneath and the connector just wasn't pushed in properly so I fixed that. Push that back in.
Screw it back on. I think before that I was having
good fuse. I'd check in the fuse in case it
was a fuse and I noticed it had the wrong amperage fuse in there. For it.
And I thought, oh that's OK. I got supposed to swap it
around, swapped it around and then I did the headlights, tested the high beams like sweets, all working, flicked the high beams off and I go and have another look and then the passenger side. Was dead.
No. Like what the hell is going on
now? Flicked at high beam, nothing
like OK, this is crazy. Switch it all off.
Had a look, pulled out the fuse that I just swapped around and had blown ohe well OK. They went fine.
It can go back to A20AMP fuse and I had a spare 10.
There's a 10 amp one that blue, so I've got a whole packet of 10 amp fuses sitting in the car. Stuck that in there.
Put it back to the way it was. Everything works, We're all
good. All the lights are working from
what I can see. Tested it, let the car run for a
bit, flicking high beams on and off and everything like that.
All the indicators, everything works.
No drama is there. I tested the air con.
The air con works. That's awesome.
So that's pretty cool. Crisp 1989 air conditioning air.
So yeah, I was pretty wrapped that was still working.
Fix the seat belts cause they were twisted.
So there's two of them that were twisted.
I fixed that so we could tick that off too because that was a big, big concern, that one. Then I pulled up the list that
we got from the first place that I was looking at.
They've got left hand, rear number plate, globe, so I missed that. I didn't look at the number
plate globes because there's no number plates on it.
Really. Checking that front Parker
globes, all the globes at the front works.
I don't have to worry about that.
They got washer. Jets need adjusting.
Oh no, they're spraying fine. I don't know what they're about.
Wiper blades? Yeah, I've got them just sitting
in the car, ready to go. This couldn't be bothered
because there's a bit of a pain to do actually.
You can't pull it all the way up, cause the way the bonnet covers most of it, yeah. So that was just to be annoying.
Do that next time, don't have to worry about.
They've got brake fluid flush, that's all done.
The rust on reboot seal to be repaired to industries industry standard is just a joke. Such a small bit of rust that
there's nothing wrong with the car.
Like it's got nothing to do with safety at all, it's just a little bit on the boot. Running.
That's the first one. Just just take it.
Take it to the. Yeah, but I I cleaned it up and
I put the rough stuff on there, so it's not going to get any worse. Drivers seat belt twisted.
That's fixed. Brake pedal rubber worn.
It looks fine. I don't know what they're
smoking. The twisted on the rear one
fixed that. Drivers door seal torn.
That was easy fix. Exhaust hangers missing.
Two of them. I don't know.
It doesn't hang. I don't know what they're on
about with that. Don't worry about the bait
breaks. They're not seized anymore.
They're winging that the springs were too short for the shocks, but they're not Now that it's been sat for quite a while.
You can Jack it up in the spring, stay seated.
They don't pop up anymore or anything.
It's all sitting there. Good.
Don't have to borrow about spaces.
That's all done. Front front and rear link pin
bushes, anything to do with the front.
That's all. Brand new, so have to worry
about that. They've got left hand front bar
not secured. I don't know what they're on
about. That all bolted in like I don't.
The bumpers on it. Definitely.
It's bolted on there. I bolted it on myself.
There's nothing missing. I've looked under.
There I go. What are they on about?
There's no. I haven't missed anything.
It just connects straight to the Rio bar because I've got a new one. Because I had a front hip that
was bent. So I got rid of that and got a
new one. Put it all in.
Bolted it all up, put the front bumper on properly, so I don't know. Some of the stuff stupid that
they're going to do. Scotty, I think you gotta take
it to Ed's mate because now you've done all the work will be like, yeah, this looks pretty good.
We'll just. And even winged that the
speedometer to operate like they need that to go.
Well. You do need a working Speedo.
Well look, it works on and off. That, that that is a.
Thing. Give a good whack and we'll
start working again. Now you can get those what the
GPS things and just sit it on there, can't I?
I think you need a working Speedo.
That's one that I do agree with them on.
The only one. Yeah.
Oh, just hopefully it works. On the day or day.
Yeah. Because it's when I've driven it
at work, so just has its crazy moments where it doesn't want to. I know everything else seems OK.
I mean they say rear rotors undersized, but.
There's no lip on them. Hmm, yeah, they might just be 8
mil, not 9 mil or something. Yeah, No.
I'm not too concerned with most of this stuff.
All the bushes are done. Do they care that much about an
exhaust? Yes, generally.
There's no holes in it. So what?
What are they whinging about? Are they reckon the it's like
collapsed inside internally? Ohe like when you bash the
muffler, it's all the good in. Yeah, they'll whinge about that.
So basically, you've done everything they don't about and nothing that they do care about. Yeah, well, I honestly think you
should take it for another check.
Get the last few things, get them to say OK, it needs it.
Yeah, it needs to get, you know, a couple of little things done here. Just get it done.
And you know well, I mean for classic Japan towards the end of the year, Scotty. Yeah, Yep, Yep, Yep.
It's like the problem. Gotta be pretty much ready to
go. The thing is, to be very close,
has to be super close at this. Point Like beasts now.
All new complete, whole new front end and.
And everything I've cleaned up underneath.
So I can't get done for any oil leaks cause I don't think it's ever been cleaned under this so it was just a lot of crud.
So cleaned up all underneath it. It's all tidy surely?
Can say what happens, but not to them to go to the other.
One Oh no way, No. Some of this stuff on there was
just stupid. So take it to somewhere
different. Hopefully they say yeah, all it
needs is couple little things and then I'll just say do it.
Yeah, done. Yeah, maybe Tingle the seat put
up again. Maybe just tangle the seat belt
up again? Yeah, I should see if they pick
on that one or not. They are the Dostal tones of Mr.
David Prince. David, welcome to the show.
Thank you very much. Sorry I'm a little late.
I had a prior engagement that is totally fine mate.
We are. We're a day late, so it doesn't
really matter at this point. Don't care.
Updates, updates with you David. OHS updates with me are not a
huge amount. Oh no, no, actually that's not
true. There's a couple of things spent
the weekend. Driving the ZRV.
Getting used to that and haven't found anything disappointing about it so far. So very, very satisfied with the
way that drives. Um, need to get a few things.
I just want to get my wife really needs one of those boot tidy things. We've.
I've talked to young Matthew about that.
I've already bought away. It's It's here, so look at you,
wonder if you are. Very handy this, Yeah, yeah.
Just stops things sliding around a bit.
My friend Malcolm, It's been working, squirrelling away on my Civic waggon for me, and it has a fully functioning head gasket.
So he sent me some photos of it sort of looked like a chocolate thick shake inside the engine, but there was nothing damaged and there was no that everything was straight as a die.
The the the head was smooth there, there was no buckling or anything like that. So it was measured.
It's got all those industrial measures and and stuff like that. Everything was flat, as flat as
that should be. So he's ordered it all back
together, changed the oil three times in it.
So it's all good flush, Yeah, give me a good flush out.
And he said I'm very happy, confident that I've got most of that done. He's also just sourcing now the
the, the Bush on the rod that actually bops, you know, secures the engine to the firewall sort of thing, just to make it a little bit smoother. So yeah, that's exciting.
We've actually got a rerun of the civic event we did at Phillip Island coming up at Sandown as part of the VHR Sandown Historics, which is the weekend after the Melbourne Cup.
So that's I think the 11th and 12th of November but also late November too is the WAG nationals I saw the other day OHF Dandenong. So you might be a contender for
that. I'm pretty confident it would be
the only 77 Honda Civic waggon there so 100% of what we yeah.
So it's about all the car updates I think I actually and today I dropped the scamp off for a little bit of a check over and the brakes are. I've noticed over the last six
months or so the brakes have become still work fine would be being 4 drum brakes. You do need to stand on them
pretty well to pull the car up. So I just thought before we
venture too far afield in that car we'll just get it checked out been checked over. So we're gonna check engine
mounts and brakes and things like that, just to make sure it's running as well as it possibly can and stopping as well as it possibly can. That's half the battle,
absolutely. Very, very good.
Look, we'll get into tonight's topic now.
Couple of things I want to mention now the reason why I'm coming up with this topic is because yesterday obviously I was at my my my school's art show and you know you you meet the parents of the kids that you teach and you say I how how good their work is and and and I got talking to this to this one this one this one guy who's I think his daughter in year 11 and and her name is Alexis and lovely kid does really good work and she was nominated for an award and we got talking and she and she's like to hear that oh this is the guy that's in the cars and then we got we got talking because he's into cars and so he
was telling you about his he had an original mini with with.
With a 1275 and you know like and he's like I drove, I drove that car everywhere did the graduation rate it numerous times etcetera etcetera. And I think he drove it to
Queensland and it did did all sorts of stuff in it And so I really love that car. So as we got talking about Minis
and and then he asked me what I got in my garage and I'm like, oh, you know, I've got no got this got done.
How long have you got you see? I didn't get to go through the
whole thing because we got caught up on this one car in a moment. But no I said, you know I I'm
gonna you know BA Typhoon and and he's like oh that's good.
That's got the, you know, the 6 speed.
I'm like yeah it does. He's like, oh, I had an extra 6
turbo BA mark 2. That I bought brand new and that
I remember buying it because I had that was the first of the six speed transmission and we got talking and the more I was telling you about this car, I'm like, I know this car.
Anyway I asked him is was the plate that because I had a custom plate on when it was new and I'm like, was it this plate?
And he's like, yeah, I'm like my, my brother owned that car for like 3 years. And then he's like, he's like,
no, he didn't. And he's like he's like, I've
got goosebumps like, although, like, yeah, it was, you know, there's a silver lightning strike BA mark 2X6 turbo 6 speed there was tuned by Herods and he's like, Oh my God, he's like, oh, this is unbelievable. I sold it to my dad on the other
side of town, who my brother bought it off.
So. So when we went on I think just
Danny on why we we bought it there and drove it back out and he's like oh do you know where it is?
He's like I'd love to buy it back.
It's the one car regret selling And then he began to tell me stories about the car and when he was pregnant with Alexis the guy I teach he's like in Mexico and F430 Ferrari line him up and and he beat the Ferrari and he's like he was like it was pretty proud and his wife was in the car saying saying well that's the last time you're doing that so.
So we got talking and he's like oh if you know where it is please let me know. And he is like, here's my
number, he's always like. Can you let me know where it is
so awkward brother and I'm all like I'll tell the story and he's he's he's he's like no way I'm like yeah that's pretty unbelievable that that that you own this car now I teach his daughter which is just which is just ridiculous and it got me thinking small world stories about cars that that you you do you do come you come into contact with you know with with occasionally because when we're talking his wife he was it was even was even like that's unbelievable that the that the teacher that my daughter has you know that she was pretty she was pregnant with that with that kid in that car you know like just
it's just unbelievable how small the world it is that that.
You know I I mean I drove that car many times and he was still he was telling me cause I had had a few things.
I was like I asked him, I was like I remember having these like yeah the reason I had this was because I had this and it was a special order card. So he I designed it so basically
he got the the orange stitching from factory and he got this and he got that and. Well I got talking about like it
all makes sense like you know it's really cool to speak to an original owner of a car that that that you get.
So I told Luke and he freaked out he's like no way.
So so then he's he's like I'm like you know the courage is like Oh no some guy and some guy in in in in Greenville Craigieburn bought it and I didn't hear from you ever again.
But that that's a pretty cool like story that because like because he's he was explaining this card.
I'm like, I know this car. Like, like it has to be.
This guy, like I said was the plate blank.
And he's like, he's like, Oh my God.
Like I've got goosebumps he's like how how did you know I'm like cause my brother owned it and he always like he always had a heart attack so so that was that was a pretty cool small world story which got me thinking of got about cars because cars you know and we talk about a lot in this show you know they are they are historical like what we you know quite often I prefer to have a car or buy a car because of the story that comes behind that comes with it you know and and we all love the chase about that really cool story and and you
know and when when you when people say how long you had this for well. Second I know but the 1st dinner
was you know God himself like it it it it's it's it's you know you you love hearing stories like that like like when we were at the last cousin coffee had that guy with the that old out was the old Alpha that was there and he was he had the the full story about the car and and and that's fascinating it it really shows history and it's a history that's a whole other dimension to the car doesn't it? Whatever car you're looking at
it's one thing I love about the way Shannon's advertised their cars. You know like the the Shannons
will have the blurb about the car and you know there were so many of these made and and then the second paragraphs always this particular example was sold new such and such.
You know that provenance is there's actually a guy in Melbourne. I did a job for him a couple of
years ago who's can't remember the name of the business.
Now I'll have to look it up and report back, but that's what he does, he. Actually follows up the
provenance of cars that people buy like context the previous owners and all that sort of through the and and with some exotic cars that are older you know it could be four or five or six owners sort of thing. That's his business, was
actually he made a business out of it, of chasing, building a whole sort of history line of the car.
Yeah, I love that. I think that's brilliant.
Like, I I, I, I know, what with my typhoon in particular.
Like I I'm the third owner and I asked the guy I bought it off.
I'm like why did it come with no options.
And he's like, he's like I asked the original owner of that and he's like if you would put any options on it would hit luxury car tax. So we didn't bother.
So like I I love, I love hearing the story that it's like, you know it was the most basic typhoon you could get because he wouldn't want to do it because of luxury car tax.
And I find that fascinating. Like I I love, I love stories
like that because you know you're spending 60 grand off.
I don't want to spend an extra $2000 because you know.
The cortex um. So that adds that adds to the
character of the car when people say oh what what was an option with drummers And I'm like well I can tell you because because they weren't cheap thing. So yeah I I love the Providence
behind behind cars and and I love those stories and and for me that that makes only a car. You know and and and and
learning about a car like just that much more special and like I I know it's. I know it's a bit wonky to some
people who cares just the car but but for for but for a lot of other people it's actually, you know it's kind of cool to know where the car came from. You know.
No, no, no, no. It's story.
And quite often we look at stories with houses and we look at stories with art and we look at stories.
With, you know architectural buildings in the city and stuff.
Oh, this was made by, you know, Henrietta of you know, she was the lady of the house and she designed it and um, you know, and and passed down through generations and and like I, I love stuff like that because it really adds another.
You're right David adds another dimension to to to the car or to the product. So.
That got me thinking about like, where I I was a bit like, taken back on what? Like that.
That's just ridiculous that I actually teach his daughter.
That what are some cover stories like that that are you know?
Then you said I know all about that car or or I owned that car or such a small world that I know all about those people that had that car and and stuff like that.
Now I remember you telling me about years ago like like when you first started me, because we were talking about your you're gonna 16, you going with like Richie Benaud's son.
Was it or was it? That was not that wasn't me,
that was a friend of mine. So he he has a Reno 16, the same
as my yellow 1-2 this day and years ago there was a French car or a Renault car club sort of get together.
Down in Docklands and for some reason there was a classic car magazine down there. I forget which one.
It might have been that Australian classic car magazine or something that was going for a while and they sent down like a bit of a videographer and an interviewer and they did a little piece to camera and they chose my friend Finn.
You'll you'll still find it on YouTube.
If you Google Renault 16 or look on YouTube, you'll find him.
He's got bright red hair, tall, skinny guy standing next to this bright. It's similar colour, you know
Renault 16 and so because of that YouTube video.
Richie Benno, the famous cricketers son Richie back in the day in the 60s and 70s or whatever, was a Renault ambassador so he constantly drove Renaults.
He was like, you know supplied with cars by Renault Australia.
So this sign of Richie Benaud, you know he'd grown up with all sorts of Renaults and had a soft spot for them and wanted to to buy a Renault 16. And he just saw this video on
YouTube and so through the link could contact my friend Finn and said oh hey I'm I'm searching for one of these.
Would you ever sell your car and do you know of any others for sale, that sort of thing. So.
Is a funny a funny link there, but another one of those stories that are along the lines of what you were saying.
Matt was years ago I helped a friend, he wanted to buy a W126S class like A380SE or 380SL. So we went down to Cranbourne
and looked at this Thistle Green Metallic S class.
Russell Grown, Distal grown, I think, yeah.
In German speak. And it was a really nice
straight car and you know, I ran really well and blah blah blah.
Anyway, we ended up buying it, so he we bought it off this guy Andrew. And yeah, my friend Stuart
bought that and had it for a number of years.
Anyway, I started work at BMW Australia some years later and the only other guy at BMW Australia that drove a Mercedes Benz to BMW as I did at the time was this guy Mark.
So Mark and I sort of became friends because he drove a bends into the Bend W car park and I drove a Benz and.
You guys must have been like, yeah, that's like sacrilegious like that. That's just like.
But great delight and one day, you know this was my 300 coupe that I still have and one day, you know, I was getting out of it and someone said all we'll have to get you out of that.
And I'm just like, yeah, like a bit because I used to drive my Reno 16 there as well the the white 1I.
Like, at least I could find it in the car park.
At the end of the day, that was my argument.
You know all silver and yellow. Well, they're all great series,
silver and and and. Silver and Grey.
Three series today, you know, So at least.
Oh, there it is. It's over there.
Yeah, I can find. So they'll have to get you out
of that night and I'm thinking this is a better car than anything in this car park and it will outlive all of them.
You know the 16 will and the 300 CE will anyway, so.
Mark and I became friends because we were the two bends drivers and so I got to know him quite well, hang out with his family one day. We're up in Ballarat.
They owned a property out there. We're sitting at dinner.
And Marx Brothers there and he starts talking about this 380 that he used to have. You know, it was Thistle Green
and Dad and this I said, did you sell that to a guy called Stuart? And he goes, yeah.
And I said that's where I know you from.
I was with Stuart buying account.
I said was that car missing rear headrest.
And he goes, yeah, that's right. And that bang, same car.
So. So Mark's brother Andrew who?
Stuart and I bought the car off like 4 years earlier.
Now Andrew, I didn't, I didn't remember him to look at instantly. But Susie started talking about
the car like, oh, same car, you know.
So he goes, yeah, that was a good car.
Like the kind I'm like, yeah. Anyway, so funny.
Yeah, funny. Small world, kind of a story.
And that that does happen. You know, like like when my dad
I have, I bought a 380 SE. It seems to be a theme with
these stories of 1/2 perks. But you know, we had that for 10
years and when our dad and I were going and looking at cars, we bought it locally from a couple of suburbs away and one of our neighbours from the other street when I said the car that we'd bought. And I said the number plate
because it was CAW 111, which was the initials of the the original owner, she'd had that like custom plate and I said something about the plate and he goes.
I I know that car, he said yeah, the dead daughter used to go to like Grimwade or whatever. Private school was down in a few
suburbs away and she used to get dropped off in the car and he said it always had roof racks on it because they put surfboards on the roof and I said that's the one, that's it.
So he knew the car because of the because of the number plate you know and he knew the family sort of thing.
So it always happens. Someone, someone always knows.
I always think no matter how non descriptor car is, there's always kind of someone out there that that will know of it usually. Remember when I was in high
school and I was working at Target and I always used to say in in my area, this really bright red first Gen BK Mazda 3 MPs. And you know, I knew what an MPs
was. Hardly anybody knew, because
it's like it looks like any other mass of three in the row.
You know Imps and it was it was really really cool.
Anyway, one day I just see it parked in the back of Target and and and I walk out and and I see I see you know my mate he's also named. His name was also Matt getting
picked up in it and I'm like. Is is this is this your you know
is this your dad? Is this your car He's like Oh
yes Badkar. And I'm like I've seen this car
and and Google you know because I knew where I knew it was parked anyway. And I, you know I ended up
knowing where he lived because the car was like you in that trailer. Like I've known this car since
it was virtually brings like yeah my dad bought a brand new I remember seeing it the day it was there shiny headlights and everything and I was like wow yes.
And then we got talking about the PS and he's like he's like he's like it's just a matter of three I've got to get to I've got to take him home. Come on we just start talking
about his dad's guys the three so.
So so that was pretty cool. I think that one board is on
sort of smokery actually. Yeah, there's a fine line there.
But it's funny because he is that still has that car and it's still like impeccably kept, like it's in beautiful nick and like my brother and and and Matt's younger brother, you know?
Became really close and then they they used to go full dry all the time. So I used to see I used to see
this car all the time especially when they broke the full drivers did that would be like oh just take the Mazda so they'd always work up in the in the in the MP S and and give it a Fang down my street and be like that's that's not what your dad wanted.
Wanted in that car. I really like that.
I don't know who's that car but yeah cool cool like.
Yeah. Little story from Mikado.
You remember as a kid and you find out well it's you know Matt that owned it. Yeah, that was, that was.
What about what about you, Scotty and David?
Any any stories that come to mind?
Nothing really that comes to mind that I've had anything that cool with my cars, I think because of where I've bought most of mine haven't really tracked them down.
So considering their imports and they hadn't really been in the country for that long either, I'm the first, I think first local owner. All of mine was the first local
owner from Japan, so be hard to track down its history.
And what was going on with it in in Japan, we talked about about that in Japan and that was always something that you'd said about grey imports. It would, you know that you're a
bit not concerned, but I mean they didn't have that Providence, they didn't have that story to them sort of thing. Alright and and I I really like
the story. I sort of like knowing where
cars been and what it's done, what sort of a life it's led.
And we talked about it when we're over there like like if I was to buy a brand new K van over there and bring it over here then it's you know I've done that.
I know it's whole history sort of thing.
It's more just you buy a 5 year old one with 100,000 K on it, you've got no anything about it sort of like well what's who's owned this? You know, I always like buying
cars privately. For that reason you talk to the
owner. You get a really good feel for
how, you know, as you know, he can psychologically profile them as to how this thing's been driven and treated and how it's been serviced. So yeah, I like.
That. You David.
There'd be a few few. I think working in the trade
too, sort of helps a bit. I had a cool 10 couple of years
ago now. A guy rang me and he wanted me
to look at his NSURL 80, which. Is pretty niche sort of car,
really cool things. I've always liked them.
I mean very aerodynamic. They're the most, you know, far
and away the most aerodynamic car in the world.
When they were released in the 60s, I think it was now because the Wankel Rotary in them is now mostly replaced by master rotaries. But anyway, it was in Surrey
Hills somewhere and I said, oh, this is really cool.
I haven't seen one of these for a long time.
Said yeah, yeah, he said I'm, you know, just bought it.
He said I'm, you know, wanting to restore it.
He said I had one years ago, actually bought one new from Reagans in Ballwin. They were the dealer back then
and he just loved it. And it had the had the, like the
automatic shift that was the where the clutch was connected to the gear lever. So any weight on the gear lever
selected. And he said, you know, my wife
drove it mostly, he said, and it was the most unreliable car they had ever owned in their lives. And she just.
She corrected after about 8 months and said this has gotta go. She said I can't be stranded on
the side of the road with the kids again.
You know. So anyway he said we we traded
it on something else and you know that was the end of the R880 story until he years and years later.
So it would be you know probably 30 years later he was, he thought, I wonder if there were only around they found one in a farm down in near mall or yay or some Yarrington down down Gippsland way and he went out to have a look.
Now obviously the difference with these cars is that there were so few of them but he thought, oh it's the same colour as the one I had. And he walked up to it and open
the passenger door and could see and feel on the dashboard where he's then three year old. I think at the time had actually
stood in the passenger wheel well and bitten, the dash and his teeth imprinted in the in the dashboard.
And they were still there. The marks were still there, all
those things later. So he knew he'd thrown away.
It was his car that he had new. Wow.
He bought the car there and then on the spot.
And I don't know if it's still on the road now or if he ever got it on the road, but I thought that was a really cool story. I've always remembered that.
Along those lines too, where it was not mine but there was a lady who still is in the MG car club who's quite well known and she has an MGB that she had years ago when she was a teenager or early 20s or something.
I don't know if she bought it new but it wasn't very old I think when she had it and then she sold it and moved on to other things. And years later like 20 years
plus labour, she was decided I want another MGB like the one I had. And she ended up finding one
that she liked and ended up buying it and whatever.
And realised after she took the torneau cover off that it was her old car, you know. Because he'd been number
underneath the Tauno cover and it was still there.
OHS. And as far as I know, she still
owns that car. David knows this lady from The
MGM G circles as well. I'm pretty sure she still owns
that car. She buys and sells a lot of
other ones, but I think that one remained.
So yeah, just random things like that.
It does happen. Then you were telling me about
that guy you know with the 1st Gen MR2 and his wife had had the. Car sold.
It And then they didn't came up came up again years later and they're like, Oh yeah, and it was their car.
So they yeah so that they they own that Now that's on complex in our club. Lovely example similar to yours
in that it's you know got the right wheels and you know luckily all the subsequent owners to to his wife had looked after it but it's back in the family.
I've got another car that keeps coming up in my life and it's quite an oddball thing as well. I have a a cousin who I'm I'm
quite close to now and she's in her 80s but and she's so she's 21 years older than me. When she was 21 she got a
licence. It was the year I was born and
her father was a doctor in Brighton.
Bought her her first car and for some unknown reason she ended up with about a 1953 Citron like 15.
So if you've ever seen an old French movie you'll have seen a Citroen like 15. So they were front will drive.
They had the big sweeping guards over the front wheels with the separate headlights. Like a car we'd see in in in a
cartoon or in Naughty or you know, it's exactly, it's a proper old school looking tin tin.
Tin it's like. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah.
Correct. Correct, with the the suicide
doors on the. Front.
Yeah, yeah, absolutely. So that car was burgundy with
with the chocolate brown leather.
So as a very young child, I can well remember my mother never drove and and she, this cousin would come and pick us up during the school holidays for a trip to Southland or somewhere like that. But all through my childhood I
can remember the smell of this, the interior of this old Citrone. She had that car 35 years and it
was her only car that she had for 35 years and so I was quite well going around the that round.
The suburbs are in Elsternwick by then and she she had a couple of kids and her husband engineered the you know the child seeks to fit in the back of the Citrone and it was a it was her her run around car for 35 years and she finally sold it and bought a VL Ballina. I remember thinking ohhhhh you
know but yeah I think keeping keeping something like that for 35 years husband at the time was it was a real tinkerer and kept it going and kept it on the road and had the had the wood dashboard with the gear stick coming out of the dash sort of a push me pull you sort of arrangement and that you could wind the windscreen out so that it to let air the air flow in.
It was a really cool thing anyway.
She sold it as I said after 35 years and had this feel, never heard anything more about it. And I was at a French car.
They are probably 15 years ago now, 20 years ago and you know a line up attractions and there was her car I I could spot spot spot a mile away. Still had the same plates,
didn't you say? Yeah, well, it it,
interestingly, that's another story of my childhood because I've got a good mate who's still a good mate who was calm and like me. And she was visiting our house
one day. We must have been about 13 or 14
or something. And he, we're looking at the car
and he said, oh, it's not registered, you know, the regio labels expired. And he's, I said to my cousin,
oh, did you know that region's expired on your car?
No, she said. And they'd never had never paid
it, and that was been unregistered for four years.
So she ended up having to get the three registered and lost the original black and white G number plates.
Oht no. And it ended up with the Garden
State, you know AJH or something.
I think it was. Anyway, here it still had the GH
plates on stewards, the Burgundy, a British built version, a Slough. The factory was at Slough and
they called them Slough Cars and it actually had the wheel imprint, the spare wheel imprint in the booklet.
Yeah, yeah. Anyway, the first thing I did,
the window is down about probably 1015 centimetres.
I went up to it. I just stuck the heat in the
window and just took. A big spell.
And that smell was exactly the same.
Just instantly transported me back to my childhood.
Yes, and I couldn't find the owner, so I left a card.
I said, Do you know the early history of this car?
If so, give, you know. If not, I.
Do. Yes, yeah, Yeah.
So he did, and had had a good chat to him about it.
And yeah, he said I'd heard it had been somewhere down in the southern suburbs. I said, Oh yeah, well, my
cousin, blah blah blah. Anyway, I told my cousin about
it. I've taken plenty of photos of
it and blow me down about three. Never saw it again, never saw
it. Any French car show?
Didn't know who was still around, maybe down about three or four years ago. Just might have been sort of in
the early stages of COVID. Anyway, I go into a workshop in
Burwood. Here it is again.
Sitting sitting having some work done by the guys at Burwood Automotive who are really, you know, good with old cars thing sitting in the workshop again like AJ still got the agent full rego. Well, not restored, Yeah, just
just full of patina stuff that's the same inside.
So that has, well, that's 70 years old now, that car.
Yeah. And it's still on the road with
with with the plates that it hadn't from 79.
Unusual, though, is her first car.
You know, at age 21. That was quite an old car.
Exactly, exactly, You know, and it wouldn't have been super cheap. I'm getting, like, it would have
been tempting to have something much newer and maybe more.
Yeah, more modern. Her father's good friends was
actually I had a Holden dealership so I think and all of my brothers actually ended up with with their first car was through this this friend of our uncles you know who and they're all trade-ins of you know there's things So it may well have come through you know that that sort of network but you're right you know quite only it was an unusual car even back then you know to have this big sweeping mud guards you know and lovely original patina beautifully loved car sort of thing. I couldn't.
I couldn't. If I had something for 35 years,
I just couldn't part with it. No, no, I wish you regretted it
as soon as you know, I mean, the veil was all the things the Citroen wasn't had headache, power steering and you know, but she as soon as she got rid of it, you know, she said I just, I should never have sold it. She said I just loved it, you
know, so. Or at least at.
Least get it. Get a little mess, that 121, run
around or something and for the daily and then keep the situation for weekends, you know precisely, precisely so that keeps popping up in my life, so. You might own that one day,
David. I may well, I may well.
Say, would you be tempted? Oh, I think they probably what?
It's it's probably worth a lot more now to someone who really wants one. It's just that I've got this
sort of connection over so many years too bitter.
Keeps popping into. You seem strange, but.
Just out of curiosity, how much are they worth these days?
Like, like, I mean, are they one of those kids are just so unique and and abstract that they're kind of hot?
Is it 40 grand or is it more than that?
Ohtani would have thought less. I would have thought.
Thought, you know, 30 maybe. OK, have a look and see.
But yeah, I can't remember the last time I saw one for sale, but. Yeah.
So it's all original patiner. Like I actually love that.
I think, I think, David, you need to own the sky.
Listen to my mind. It it it always be, it obviously
looked like it had always been maintained but never restored.
You know, paint wasn't perfect. The interior wasn't perfect, but
it was all there and and still, you know, as I remembered it all those years previously. That's when that happened.
Do you remember the original plan was on the car?
It was JCG something or other, so you could probably still get the original plates, but there would be photos of it.
Somewhere really made. Yeah.
Yeah, that's cool. Well, there are two light
fifteens for sale. How much are they, David?
Oht ones, $44,900. Yes, you were on the money
there. All the other ones 7000, but
that's sitting in a barn and yes, that's not, not, not an appropriate go. So somewhere in the middle
there. Maybe somewhere in the middle?
It's really. There's definitely been, you
know, I find even though I might not have owned a lot of cars with these these crazy stories, you do spot cars, you know, like all that was for sale there and then it's for sale there and you know, you do you do sort of re come across them a few times.
I've seen cars I used to own and I'm like, oh, that's my old one there. Or I saw before Telstra for a
friend years ago, FDH 401, it was a burgundy, you know, like 1994 Telstar manual sedan. And I just helped him sell it
because he was useless. And you know, I just sort of
took control of the sale and then years later I was walking across. Apple St.
It was it was doing Chapel apps you know I was like, well, same regio there it is on I nearly knocked on the window and said I know this car now. I thought, they're just gonna be
like, who is this freak talking to me?
So I didn't. But.
You know it's yeah, it's one of those one of those funny things you said like oh you know, I should, I should get let them know that I know what it is. I my I spoke about a few things
like similar stories with this with my uncle and my nana's old camera. So so just just for, just for
some. Just for some context here my
name is pretty much just. She passed away just starting
Toyotas for, you know, 30-40 years.
So she just. Can't lady.
You're smart lady. Yep.
And all she did was just upgrade to A to a new to A to a newer.
You know like a few generations later.
Yeah. So she went from she had an old
old she shed Coronas for years and then then then then she went to the the wide body Camry which was six months old.
But she's like I'll make I'll wait till waited to buy one that we had a few cases in it depreciation lower.
Anyway she owned that one till like 20.
Geez, 22,000 and 9. So and they they sold it and and
they just got a new camera because Camry owners just buy cameras for some reason. Well sorry no not for some
reason for good reason they they they are reliable.
Anyway my uncle calls my So what we have this child and he was on the phone with my mom as well and and we'll we'll we'll discuss and he's like oh I saw mum's old car it's still getting around still getting around Grafton it just it was just on the other side of Grafton so from South Grafton and moved to like North Grafton or or whatever and they're like we haven't seen any isn't there it is same plates up and down.
But it's still going. So he's like, well, he's like
that was the most maintained, meticulously maintained Camry ever. Like it's you've got, you've got
yourself a good car there, which is, which is a really cool story here. But the guy I bought my Typhoon
off actually like we we kept in touch and he's like, if you ever want to sell it, I'm like, I'm not selling it.
But anyway, that's another story.
He He's like to me. Um.
He's like, I always get a I always get a message from my sister because his sister lives in Gladstone Park.
Yeah, and is, is, is and should be like, oh, senior old car again. Yeah, just just broke up with
him because. So, so he always let's me know
when when it's been there. But so like people know cars
like like if they know the car, they'll be like, hey, you know that that was this person's car. And you know, as there's not
many things about like, you know, not many objects or not many things that can people can say, oh, that was my old thing or this was that and this was this and this was that.
And so yeah, very, very cool. Cool to hear stories here this
year. This year stories like.
That in this country though, you can't due to the Privacy Act.
You can't track down stuff like in the UK, you know, you can track down that provenance relatively.
It's amazing what you can find out over there.
Known as and what have you. But but here you just can't.
Like I'd love to know where our old Nissan Patrol is that I sold in like 1997 and and the Nissan Urvan that we had all through the 80s that we grew up with. You know, I'd love to find that
car but there's just no way of knowing where the hell it is.
You know you've checked the regio and it's it's not available but it's also not registered under that number anymore or it's null and void or whatever.
So you like well? You know, did you remember the
do you like somehow like some paperwork with the VIN?
You could type in the VIN and the VIN.
Leaving that car too. But ohk OK yeah no records of
that. So it's just one of those things
you're kind of like, well, without the Reggio coming up with anything it's you don't know if it's alive or dead or where it is. It's funny how you see some
constantly and then others you. They're just that's it you.
Never come across them again. Even if you're driving around
somewhere, you just you just don't see them.
Well, your your parents sold. Your parents sold the Zephyr
that. Story I should reiterate that
they sold a Ford Zephyr in like 1971 or something when they moved from Melbourne to Sydney. And they sold it for $80.00 in
Melbourne, which was, you know, probably like $1000 now or something. They sold it because they didn't
think it would make it to Sydney because it was old, you know.
So in lieu of the Zephyr they purchased, my dad's mum had a FJ Holden at the time, which was I think actually a little bit older, but it was lower mileage. So they thought that that would
be a better bet to get to Sydney, you know, Which if I was around back then, I would have talked sense into them and said, well, the Zephyrs, fine, there's nothing wrong with it, you know, just get in and go. But anyway, if they can.
Adopted this plan to buy my my dad's mum's car, the FJ Holden, which proceeded to break down 8 times between Melbourne and Sydney. It just overheated and wasn't
you know, lower mileage doesn't always mean better long haul driving does it? So that was the the theory
didn't work anyway. They get to Sydney and the week
they moved to Bondi they saw their Zephyr three times in the in the week. So whoever bought it for 80
bucks in Melbourne, Mum said literally must have driven straight to Sydney without an issue and and then they saw it three times. Like what are the chances of
that like? That seems not even in the same
state. Ridiculous.
Yeah, that's that's that's small world, isn't it Like that.
Crazy, crazy, crazy car sightings.
I just got reminded of when I had a guy in the trade ring me a couple of years ago or before. Before that I, a friend moved
into a retirement village in Camberwell and it had an underground car park and she had a jazz that I got her into several years ago previously and didn't get much use.
And she read me one day she said, oh look, the the batteries flattened jazz, you know, She said, I think I left the door open, all the Hatch ajar, you know, I'll ring the RSV.
I said no, that's fine. Look, I'm just nearby.
I'll come and jump start it. So I went, went in and parked.
Just across from her was a like an 83 prelude, so the very first of the second Gen preludes in a yellowy gold colour covered with this fine layer of dust. Original B number plates on it
automatic. And I looked at and had a little
he said, well that's nice, you know, said, oh, he.
She said, yeah, it's been there the whole time I've been here, just hasn't moved. And you could tell by the dust
it hasn't moved. So I said, oh, said you next
time you're talking to them at the reception desk, ask if you ask who this is. You know, we might be able to
find a home for it if they want to.
Anyway, nothing came of it and about I'll probably 12 months later I'd seen it again there. And then then I had to call one
day from a guy in the car trade. He said, now you're the person
that I want to speak to. He said I wanted this old
preview. I just want an idea of what you
think it's worth. I said, oh, what, what?
What is it? He said, but look at safety
threats. And only one automatic stunned
30,000 cases or 40,000 in really low mileage.
Wow. He said, you know, I've got this
inside running on it. And you know, I said, I said, Oh
yeah, he said probably a couple of other things.
I said the part of an underground car park in Camberwell and her retirement village.
And it was just it was just silence.
You see how the you know, though, about every old classic chicken Honda in the States. Did you end up buying it?
What was the deal? It.
Well, no, he didn't, but some, but somebody did.
And. It's now in the club.
That's what I thought of. It turned up in the club, that
car. Yeah, yeah, turned up in the
club. Turned out it was it was a motor
show car. Yeah.
Very, very first ones in the country and you can tell by the colour and the fact that it's got doesn't have a nursery.
Real belts in the back. The very early cars had the dogs
in the back. Yeah.
And the story goes the original owner went to the motor show and said to his wife didn't have any car you like motor show and that's the one she picked and and she said I want that one.
No, no, the one that was in the motor show.
So there you go. So maybe it was cute, I I liked
it. But the fact that he literally
thought I did know if every old. Yeah.
I mean it's, you know, it's not that far off the money there, but, you know, if there's an old Honda in Melbourne, chances are you do know about sniffing out. Yeah.
When we're in Japan, Scotty, just for some context like they would mention this car a few times.
Talk to us on the on the podcast about this old Ek not Ek VTR.
They put you put your card on a few times and yes, yes, it came up on Marketplace and he's like, that's the car, that's the. 1.
Yeah, we were just looking at marketplaces like Yep, that's the upholstery. That's it.
That's the mileage, you know. That's it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's crazy.
It's quite literally, you know, we are the the conversation here, but more importantly David is the Honda investigation unit.
Yeah. No, we can't special.
Because you know it's. Special it's surely.
That would be awful. Perhaps with our eyes across the
east and West of Melbourne, there's not many old bangers that you sort of wouldn't, you know, pick up on like you know where they are, you know where they live.
Yeah, there's there's a few I get noticed they get.
Notice that that's absolutely true like and and and you notice and then like you go back and like there's slight this next slide that's just sitting at the front of that person's house and it just it looks to be OK but it's getting a bit you know how you're going now but I know where it is you know and and like I'm I'm I'm not I'm not a super extra kind of guy but like if I if I know someone that's gonna be like hey I know we want is you can right there and I know where there's an AMX 5 just running away and the guys like I want to sell it and then when I say to him I'll offer you money for it he's like he's like no
I'm going. I wanna fix it.
I'm gonna fix it. I wanna install Restore.
Yeah. So it's a it's an early 1.6 in a
Amex 5 Red. Yeah.
He's had it for like almost 30 years I think like like he's had it a long time. But he's he's like, he's like I
can't part with it and he's indecisive gentleman that, let's just say that hopefully he's decisive enough to put it under a cover or in a garage. It's outside, yeah, sorry, It's
just rotting away and original wheels.
It's a very original car and mounted.
The Reds were known to be. Uh, what Did you call the Honda
versions of David? No.
Pink Can you mix vibrates called classic pink.
I think. So yeah the clear is peeling and
it's it's it's in a bit of a sorry state but yeah that's a like you do know you do know where where where where where these cars are and you know I I know mate that's got an early early 31 skyline and that's just sitting there and but.
Just got out. No another.
Man, another one, OK? OK.
The one. He does listen to the show Rob.
You know you are give me the car anyway that's a that's all.
Sorry but Scotty sent us a a car on on that's for sale on greys at the moment and it's it's actually looks besides the rusty tailgate and bonnet actually looks to be there.
What is it, Matthew? It is a Honda Civic gentleman.
It's a It's like a what year is this?
One is like a. 1980. 80 OK, so despite my brothers one.
It is ohe hatches. Rustier than your brothers car
though it's a nice colour, that Purpley blue, that's a lot of rust. Yeah, missing a grill. 2 keys. 5
speed with the Taco as well. Yeah, that's it's a nice colour,
purply blue with a beige interior.
That was the hero colour of the of that second Gen when they first came out. The Wheels Rd test car was that
colour really it's it's quite an attractive scheme, not an overly attractive car, that particular one, but quite an attractive thing. We have parts for that car in
the gearbox, if anyone's listening and buys it.
Just Nora. So hit us up on the show if if
that's a. Oht It's very good.
Yeah, but but the the, the thing that got me is, is when Scotty put this in the chat, he's like, you know this one David and.
No, no I'm not. Isn't it funny at the moment the
buyers premium is higher than the the car?
Yeah, yeah, Mr Hart, back through the, sorry, the BMW compact we were talking about earlier that I bought, the new price I looked up was about 42 grand.
Yeah. And then they they all, most of
them would have been in the 40s somewhere depending on the options. So mine probably with metallic
and roof would have been 40, you know, for probably 4647, you know, driving it away or something.
So I think we're gonna play a game now and the game is if we find an old Honda ad or something, we have to send it to David if he knows the car. And you know what?
We'll, we'll have to shout him like a like a drink every time he's like, yeah, I know where that one is or I don't know about that one and you're like, damn it.
So but yeah, that'll that'll be, that'll be really.
Really. Really win at it, but it's a
nice thought. Yes, yes it is.
I think you'll be. I think you'll be fine, Mr
Grits. Anyway, gentlemen, I think it's
time for the quiz. Let's go.
Snack on in the last couple of days because I looked at Graze the other night. Did you bid on the Falcon?
OHS No, I didn't beat on the Falcon.
It was smooth. So you know the rules. 10
questions plus some bonus questions.
Let's crack on question one. We all know that Toyota Corolla
is the world's best selling car of all time. 2nd.
The Ford F-150. Everyone forgets about #4.
What is the 4th biggest selling car of all time?
Toyota Hilux. Incorrect, Mr Bunting.
David. David.
I think the Volkswagen Beetles right up there.
Yeah, good guess. It is not the Volkswagen Beetle.
They still available? Absolutely.
The focus. Incorrect.
It is the Honda Civic, understand.
Really. Yep.
Hey, Guy. Absolutely.
It'll be. That was written at time of
writing in an earlier this year. So for SO Corolla.
Four. I'll tell you what it was,
actually. I'll tell you what I was saying
on one second. Some interesting because it I
currently own a Civic. Do you, David?
Yes. He had numerous.
So from the top, so so. Sports waggon, which is born.
Corolla at 50 million units sold.
F truck, which is pretty unbelievable that it's second considering it's only virtually sold in North America at which is the the F Series truck, 41 million of those. 3rd is the
Volkswagen Golf. OK, at 35 million, which leads
me to my bonus question for 4th. How many million have
approximately be sold of the Honda Civic 26,000,000?
26,000,000 says Mr Prince. Mr Mr Bunting I give closest to.
Yeah, I thought it was like 24 and a half million, but. 24.5.
That's what I was going to say. I'll go 25. 25.
Edwards closest 30 million have approximately been sold.
Wow, what a civics. That is a lot of Civics.
You're full 10 list though I'll read them out to you.
So 4th Civic, 5th accord, 17,000,000 loads sold.
So no wait no not that's not that's not that order.
Sorry sorry. It was Beetle at 21 million and
then. Yeah, then 17,000,000 for the
Accord and the Ladder during the Soviet Soviet era, 16.5 million
Fiestas Ford Fiestas have been sold. 16.5 million Model Tees
and 16,000,000 BMW 3 Series rounds out your top ten model.
Hang on, how many Model T's? They sold 16.5 million model
Tees. That does not sound right to me.
No, that's what I thought. I thought Two's rules reading
about used that many back then. They could produce like one
every two weeks. You know, like they didn't have
the production back then that you could do now.
There's no way they tuned out 16,000,000 model T4.
That's what I thought as well and I looked into this.
You doing this information. From a website
calledtopspeed.com apparently, and that's what they've said.
But anyway, trust him. I'll have to look, I'll do.
I'll Google that separately and see how many Model T Fords were made. Right.
I'm gonna just check that now, yeah, just have a quick.
Yeah, more more than 15,000,000 were built and sold.
There you go that's from that's from Ford Corporates website.
I'm surprised that. Next question, question two AMG
originally got notoriety from a racing event in which they competed in a 300 SL 6.8. It was the 24 hour race of Where
Lemon. Incorrect, Mr Bunting.
So this big sedan came second overall after 24 hours and everyone's like, holy crap this big sedans beating all sports cars and stuff. Just like to this.
Car. Yeah, it's it's called the Red
Pig or something, I think from a.
Massive. Huge car considering it was
racing all these little cars and it came second after 24 hours, which is pretty amazing. Where was the race held and why?
And this is like, it's a very important piece of energy history. David, was it?
Was it SPA? It was Spa, David.
Well done. Hmm.
I was gonna say Nurburgring. Thought it might.
Could have been that if it wasn't.
Smooth space just rings a bell. Frank couldn't call Spa.
Question 3 Visually, what was the major difference in in spotting a UK delivered Toyota Supra JZ 80 or Mark 4 Supra Turbo? That is to a Japanese or
American spec Toyota Mark 4 Supra, the main visual difference. Front bumper ball incorrect.
David. David.
The fog light incorporated in the rear bumper bar.
Incorrect. The question Was it the race
spoiler? Incorrect.
They had a hood scoop. They all had hood scoops.
The turbos there, which is which is quite weird like that.
It doesn't really suit the car at all, but but yeah, they they like put. Them with the hood.
Yeah, it's just a little one. So it's a tiny little scoop.
I'm like, I don't even know why, why it was necessary, but yeah.
Hmm. If they do weird things,
question 4. Drivetrain wise, what is the big
difference between a Toyota Land Cruiser 100 series and a Toyota Land Cruiser 105 series? Ed, one of them has an
independent front end. I think it's the 105 series.
It's no the one I followed the love axles in the 100 got the IFRS so. Well done school check.
Bunting 2 David One and Scotty at the score.
Question 5. Hyundai Santa Fe has been around
since what year? Did.
Ed became first came out 2001. Incorrect.
I said it confidently, though didn't.
You did? Very confident.
Do we get closest to? More.
Well, there we go. Well, here we go.
Here we go, here we go. I'm going to say 97.
Incorrect. I am going to say 99.
Incorrect. You should have played the
percentages of the Edward game. It was two, yeah.
But I was just, I thought it came out in the 90s.
I'll give you a .5 Edward, cause you were the closest to.
How does that sound? OK.
Question 6IN which Holden model did we see the introduction of three engines which were able to be run on E85 fuel from the factory, David? 85 from the factory. 3 engines
that were available in that were.
Probably a Commodore wasn't. It that was the view, Commodore,
David. Well done, Very good.
Question seven what is the longest running one make series of racing cars in it running in Australia?
Longest running. Longest running racing series
since the since 1980. I believe it was.
David. David.
Is it the HQ series? Incorrect.
Another good gas? That was a good guess.
Yeah. You know, that's that's a great
guess actually, because that is a good series that still runs to this day. But this this racing series is
still is still running actually, believe it or not.
With the same cars. Well, I mean I'm assuming some
of the pretty beaten up, but but like it's there like you know the same cars from that year I guess like they're they didn't really, let's just put it this way, they stopped selling them in the 80s as well. Trying to think what I've
watched, it's not like MG Racing that's a classic historic.
Scott Scott Is it the Nissan Pulsars?
Nissan Pulsar is incorrect. Does not.
I guess the the the triple series is a great series.
Yeah, Dang it. OK, you're.
Still running too. Yeah, I believe so.
Yeah, that's the running the the Excel still running.
I'm pretty sure so. Yeah, but they, yeah, they were
90s, so that's why. Um, so Mr Bunting guesses on
you. Or you can choose to give up.
Give. Give it a crack.
Come on, give it a crack. Like mirages were later, like
Corollas were later. I'm just like, well, nothing's
coming to me. Think late 70s, early 80s.
Sorry 70s and 80s. It was sold through.
I can't give you any more hints that it's it'll give it away, Aussie. I can't.
I can't give you an answer, Mr Bonding.
Sorry, Kingswood. No, that was already that was
already I guess the Holden Gemini, the Holden Gemini series. Really still going to this day?
Losers. And for the bonus question, this
is this is only second to the oldest globally, one makes series in which they run what babies?
Global fire. Bunting.
Did you have a guess? Yes, I said.
Minis. Minis is absolutely.
Correct, Edward. Oh, wow.
OK. So Can you believe that Holden
Geminis, that racing series is the longest running series not only in Australia but the second in the world after, after?
After. I can't.
I had no idea I was still running them.
No. Especially with what they're
worth now, they're not in racing circles.
So when someone asks you what are the two oldest racing series would you be like? Well, the first one mini,
obviously, but the second one you might not know about holding. Yeah, yeah.
Great trivia question. Question 8.
In The Fast and Furious, the first movie from 2001, Jesse.
Should be apparently going to MIT after discussing What Car with Brian. Scott.
Scott. That he's talking about the
doing up the Super. Yeah, on the.
Computers. That is correct, yes.
He shows him a PowerPoint presentation and he's like, you should be on it. Question 9.
Besides their electric cars and commercial vehicles.
What cars do radar offer in Australia currently point 5H?
Right. David got in there just.
OK, the captor. Yeah, that's .5 here, yeah.
The Kolios. .5 So that gives you one.
The, the. The.
Arcana. That's three.
That's 1.5. And the Magana areas?
That is correct. That is 4 that they get the two
points well done. Now.
Well, that is the besides their electric cars in their in their commercial vehicles question 10. This is Texas Tide game.
So David's on 4, Edwards on 3.5, Scotties on one.
There are still 2. Game yeah.
Yeah. I thought so.
What's your name? Scotty.
Actually, no. Technically this is still
anybody's game. Actually, I'll explain why in in
a minute. Question 10 How many small SUV's
do Mazda currently sell that David's got in there?
Is small. And well, this is I'm, I'm going
for, according to Mazda Australia's website in the category they say small SUV. They have got three in there.
Oh crap, I was given. They've just given the answer,
haven't I? Yeah, even the answer.
If you can name them. Ohk OK, I've just completely
cocked that up, but anyway. Bonus question.
I'll give you a point each if you can name all three of them.
OK, see. You Someone's gonna buzz in,
someones gonna bust. In OHS, David Good, Head, David.
Yeah, yeah, 63630. 2. The 65 wouldn't be small CRV,
small SUV. I think the other one is the MX.
Um, 30 Or is this? Correct.
Amex 36, three and 6:30. I don't even know why they sell
three small SUV's like the. For me that makes no sense.
At all stupid and there's like 7 different models in each one.
No, it's. It's a complete farce like like
I like mess there and like you know the whole tour was great and everything but but when I went to their website today I'm just like they've got three in the in that small SUV carrier plus all the options and plus everything.
I'm just like it's a it's a it's a bloody logistical nightmare to to to do but anyway that is that is what you.
Get. Ordering.
You know, ordering the options. Did you wanna three or a 30 or a
using? Yeah, yeah, shopping.
Can you get me that small SUV outside?
Which one? The small SUV X3?
No, the 6:30 you ticket move that.
Anyway, school check. Scotty on one, Edward on 3.5 and
tonight's been on a grand total of seven.
Mr. David Prince. Well done.
Very nice, David. Very, very nice, Gentlemen.
I think that's a podcast. Thank you, Matthew.
Bye, bye. Thank you very.
Much Scooby Doo Golf, Tip of the week.
We'll do a quick one, I would say.
A lot of people will say at the beginning to when you're doing your golf swing, take it slow and steady.
Yep, don't do that. You want to follow through and
swing a lot quicker. Follow it all the way through
with. Your hard as you can.
Yeah, once you get to swing right and you're pretty comfortable. Then complete the full swing all
the way through. So.
Stop. Some people will hit the ball
and that's it and slow down. Do the same speed all the way
straight through. So go through the week.
Follow through with the swing. Don't stop.
Yep. Yep.
Yep, Yep, Yep. You heard it first, you know.
I mean, I'm going to be Tiger Woods.
Beside the cheating. By the end of next year, I can
