I should say ladies and gents, lots to chat about as always,

but a bit of a trigger warning this evening,

we are going to be quite Tesla heavy

as we kick off the show tonight.

So just some Tesla content coming up.

So yes, let's kick off firstly with some news, of course.

You might have heard this week that the Tesla Model Y,

not that one, this one, the Tesla Model Y,

the new one has been named the 2026 drive car of the year.

So I'm sure we all four of us have driven the Tesla Model Y,

the new one, I'm sure.

So gents and ladies, I guess, what do we think?

Do we think this is warranted?

Is this the car of the year that we drive?

Start with you, Joy.

What do you reckon?

Starting with me?

Yes, starting with you.

Ladies first.

All right.

Well, I think in our wrap up last year,

we gave this both runner up.

So it actually appeared in,

I think it's the only car that appeared in both of our

sort of like, yeah, favorite car of the year.

So I think for that reason,

if it wasn't for all the politics surrounding it,

I think it would be a lot more popular.

Because if you just look at the car

and just think about the car and how it is,

it's a very good all round the car.

There's not a lot to complain about.

And it's the only one that currently has like,

the ability to drive by itself on Australian roads anyway.

So I think for that reason alone,

and the performance one is really fun.

I don't think this,

that's probably not the performance one,

this one that won car of the year isn't.

Yeah, I think this is the real drive.

I'm not wrong.

Outstanding value will package the drive text.

Yeah, no, I agree with Joy.

But I think it's probably for the midsize SUVs

and just overall EVs in general, certainly it's up there.

It's got features that no other car has,

obviously with the full self-driving.

We're about to discuss the fact that

GROC is coming as well, our companion.

Someone said they've got it.

They've got, oh, yeah, hang on.

They've got the GROC.

Oh, good, good, we'll chat about GROC very shortly.

But yeah, I think this is probably on the face of it.

And obviously these awards are based on 2025.

I think for 2025,

this was probably the standout car of the year,

in my opinion, I think.

I think the Zika 7X came very close.

That got the best car under $60,000, I believe,

so they must have been liberated of those two.

That was your favorite.

That was my favorite.

And my favorite is the X-Pen,

because I feel like if you want to drive

like a non-aggressive looking robot,

then that's the one.

Yeah, so I think that's probably well deserved.

Results up with you, what do you reckon?

Is that your pick as well for last year's car?

Well, it depends on who's paying.

So whichever company wants to,

which is, you know, at times,

that's how these awards are selected.

You know, the drive team.

It's funny, I think I picked up one of the cars,

one of the Zikas from Calder Park,

where Drive was doing a lot of that,

their massive shootout of selecting their car of the year.

So they did have dozens of models there.

So they were comparing, you know, anything and everything.

And yeah, I mean, if you think about sort of the money

that you're paying, that entry-level car,

the entry-level Model Y, the rear-wheel drive,

they've done quite a few changes to it.

One of the biggest things I found when driving it up,

whatever that national park is south of Sydney,

you know, climbing up the mountains,

it just kept pulling, or just for a rear-wheel drive.

So I think they've done quite a bit of work

to the way, I guess, it delivers power.

And it felt like a dual-motor car when it wasn't.

So then all the other things that Tesla's so good at.

Yeah, I think it deserves it.

In terms of the Zika 7X would probably be the runner-up

in, you know, most categories.

And we have to know that, you know,

the Model Y was there for most of the year.

Zika 7X, I think, official pricing announcement

was sort of in August.

And then, you know, only a couple of months at the end of the year

that they actually had stock or cars in the country.

So, yeah, really, really good car, the Model Y.

Roland?

I agree. 7X and the Model Y definitely up there.

I think, for me, personally, it comes down to

what you want in a car.

The only downside, honestly, that I can see,

parked aside the politics for the Model Y is

there are so many on the road.

Like, if you've always had a car that's unique,

you're not going to have one.

Forget that.

Yeah, forget it. That's right.

You know, you've seen, I'm sure everyone's seen videos

of people putting on social media,

or I had someone try to open my car,

but come on, it's just a Model Y

and same with, like, other five next to them.

Someone's genuinely just opened the wrong car.

So, I think from, but as a package, as you've all said,

it's like $65,000 for what you get.

It's absolutely amazing.

And again, personal opinion for me,

I'm so, I always reverse into all spots,

so I like a car with a decent size front

to put my backpack for work and groceries and everything.

And again, it's subjective, but yeah.

Very good.

Yeah, well said, Roland and Riz.

I agree with you both on all fronts.

But you're right, Riz, the 7X only sort of came

to light at the end of last year.

So, I think, you know, I think the gap is definitely closing

between Model Y and all the other cars on the road.

7X, X-plane G6, BY to C-line 7,

got some newer sort of mid-size SUVs coming,

as well as the smaller SUVs, too.

They're looking good.

So, yeah, I think 26 could be looking very tight.

Just to say something, Dom,

when they say car of the year,

they mean all cars, not just,

it's like over petrol cars as well.

I think so, yeah.

It's everything.

Everything, yeah.

So, I mean, that's already a win in my books.

It's an electric car that won.

I mean, I personally feel that I don't think

getting petrol cars should ever win a car of the year anymore,

but obviously I'm very biased, so.

So, what do we reckon?

2026, BYD out of 1?

Gile X2, IONT, 5-fly.

Bring on the small cars, right?

Yes, indeed.

Well, congratulations to the Tesla team.

They've done very well with the selling of this car.

You know, you've got cars that start each month,

and it's certainly been near the top

very close to month on month.

I think they sold about 22,000 of them.

Kudos to C-line 7.

They did very well,

but we also have to know that, you know,

C-line 7, given quite a few months

in the second half of the year,

there were significant discounts,

like 3, 4 grand off the premium model

for quite a bit of that second half as well.

So, BYD, of course, playing in that volume game,

and Tesla had an interesting second half

with, you know, FSD, multiple new models.

If you can call them, you know, Model Y,

they really start to kick off in long range,

and then you have the performance

come sort of near the end of the year.

And yes, I think 30-year in a row

was the best-selling car in the world,

so that also says something.

Yeah, I think FSD definitely highlighted the Model Y,

for sure, or at least the Tesla brand for 2025,

I think, certainly seeing that market

which is good, which is really good.

Yeah, ICES 320th Century, yeah, it's so true.

Andrew, I totally agree with that.

And yeah, interesting to see Fed members on C-line 7.

I mean, already for January, C-line 7 outsold

Model Y and every other car, basically,

in the EV space anyway.

Yeah, I agree, Xander, as Roland said,

Model Y everywhere, it's so true.

But C-line 7 is kind of everywhere too.

I'm seeing that a lot in our neck of the woods.

It's becoming quite common too.

I think it is a very good buy still.

again, trigger warning for those of you who are triggered by Tesla,

it is quite Tesla heavy for the first half of the show.

We've kind of mentioned GROC already,

another thing that Tesla is trying to get ahead of the game with,

so FSD and now GROC coming to Tesla vehicles for Australia

and New Zealand, but those of you who don't know GROC,

it's an AI chatbot basically, you can use on X

and some cars I think in the US have GROC,

so good to see us getting it too.

Hardware 3 vehicles apparently rolling out first

and then Hardware 4 later on.

So someone in the chats at the head,

Hardware 3 already, GROC in the Hardware 3,

which is a nice win for those Hardware 3 owners

who didn't get FSD of course,

so this is a nice balancing of the books.

Not all yet, sorry.

Yeah, not all because it's those with the AMD infotainment unit.

So those of us that still run Intel inside,

maybe we'll get it on the next round after Hardware 4,

4.5, 5 and Hardware 2 cars as well.

Sorry, I know you enter your classic cars,

you got the Spectre, you got the performance model 3

from 2019 I know, also 2020, 2021.

You're right, so to be eligible for GROC,

you need an empty processor as there is

the vehicle software version 2025.26 or later

and either premium connectivity or Wi-Fi.

that they will integrate it into everything within the car,

because if you've used the Tesla system,

sometimes the voice assistant is just not as amazing

as what it could be.

So it's a hidden miss.

So I presume that GROC will do a better job in the future.

We wondered, Roland, last week when you were away,

whether you actually do work for ADR.

You said this before.

In fact, to the point where I think some of the biggest Tesla

influencers in the world picked up on your post, I believe.

Model YL, which is the six-seater Model Y,

Roland has spotted, is approved for Australia.

Take us through this.

So you've got one variant.

It's got towing.

So I know it's slightly small, but it's...

With the brake trailers, 1,588,

and you've got 750 non-braked trailers.

So I think that's fairly decent.

It's got unique wheels.

Only one spectral motor, 378 kilowatts off the top of my head.

And yeah, that's pretty much it.

Couldn't see anything in terms of colors, anything else.

But it seems like everything else between all of the other

long-range all-wheel drive vehicles were exactly the same.

So it's pretty much the same as the long-range all-wheel drive

that you can get right now,

with exception slightly longer, the dual motor,

and obviously the seating difference

in terms of the configuration.

We were speculating last year whether this would actually arrive

in Australia, but it looks like it will be here.

So 4.969 meters.

So that is almost 5 meters.

And I was looking at the Ioniq 9.

So it's a little bit shorter than the Ioniq 9 6-seater.

So the second row will have captains, chairs like that,

which I assume these handles will go up and down,

these rest, sorry.

So easier to get in and out, which is great.

It's nothing worse than trying to claw your way back

into that third row.

It's not pleasant.

I personally go for the white.

It looks nice.

And the front looks like in the old Tesla Model Y.

That's thousands of them on the road at the moment,

as we said earlier.

But third row doesn't look too bad in those photos,

I gotta say.

But of course, we have to actually test these out.

I've never been honestly super comfortable

in any third row because you've been on about you.

It's always a bit of a squish at the back there.

But having said that, the Ioniq 9 I quite enjoyed.

The time I did to sit in the back there.

It's my favorite so far.

I think because of the shape of the Ioniq 9,

it felt bigger because it's kind of more square at the back.

Whereas obviously the Model Y

has more arrow up the back or more of a fast back.

So curious to see how this will go.

Rizzi, did you get to sit?

No, of course not.

This hasn't been out yet really.

Last time you were in China, did you see this at all?

Yeah, I sat in one in Guangzhou in the second row.

And there those little armrest things are retractable.

They've got a button as well as you can do that

on the screen as well.

On the inside, of course, now that it doesn't matter.

At the time I was sitting in the car,

it had a big screen at the front,

which was a 16 inch screen instead of the 15.4 inch,

but they're all the same now.

And it is pretty comfortable.

I mean, also it's got adaptive suspension as well,

which is found in the Model Y performance as well.

This was actually the first car to have

that adaptive suspension system in a Model Y.

And yeah, they're very, very popular.

In the showrooms that I sort of walk past,

a lot of people were interested in that.

And I think the rumors were in the first week

that it was launched, I think back in August,

the first two days they got 40,000 orders.

So, you know, there is a bit of demand for six-seaters.

And, you know, I think it will be the most affordable

six-seater vehicle when it eventually lands.

I would suspect later half of the second quarter.

Yeah, I'm curious with the pricing too,

because as you said, the six-seaters are not cheap

at the moment, pretty much close to 100K,

even for the Kia EV9.

So, if they could drop this to 80, 80, 90,

I mean, that would be very, very good.

You know, six-seaters and seven-seaters are very popular

in Asia and China, not so much here in Australia.

I think they still make up last time I checked,

five to 10% of the market, not much at all.

So, very curious to see.

Roland, is your Model X a six-seater?

Seven.

So, it's two at the front, then the bench seating of three,

and then two at the back.

to be eligible for a green plate,

your plug-in hybrid must have 100Ks of range, I think.

I've never been to that part of the country before.

I think, all the way up to Wilpina Pounds

in the past the Ranges.

That was the on-road testing.

And then the second day was a bit of off-roading.

I've never done anything like this before.

In terms of this level of off-roading.

Remember Tom, we did some off-roading with the LDV

a couple of years ago?

Yes.

That was like in some sort of a national park.

But this was, yeah, very different and very capable cars.

Like, you know, like I said, I'm not a professional,

you know, four-wheel driver, but there were people like,

this vehicle in this photo is about to go into a ditch.

And the way they, the way they sort of, you know,

navigated across all the terrain,

it was on two wheels at one stage.

And then the car automatically literally hops along.

Yeah, very capable vehicles.

Heavy, they're about three times each,

but very capable in terms of, you know,

for those that really want an off-roading sort of vehicle,

this will do most things that people would expect.

And the amount of luxury that we know,

BYU and Denza usually pack in very capable cars.

I'm excited for what's to come.

There is possibly, I think Roland spotted some electric cars

that are coming from Denza and the ADR stuff,

as well as there's a fully electric Type 7

that has just been launched or about to be launched in China.

I can't wait till they sort of make it.

I want to see what their capabilities are.

A fully electric one of these would be amazing,

but I guess at this stage, this is what we have.

The plug-in hybrid off-roaders are pretty much here.

which is quite a lot for, you know,

at the end of the year, a couple of months

before the end of the year, I think it's about 120 or 130.

So I suspect if they're going to be increasing prices,

it might be $65,000 instead of $59,000 at the moment.

Yes, the interior snobber me thinks

the Cybertruck interior is quite spartan,

for what I've seen anyway.

But look, again, you're buying this for the utility

and for example, V2 out the back.

It's the fact that it looks odd as well.

That's its selling point, I guess.

So more charges, the better for EV owners.

And just finally, to finish off the night,

RobotWatch here is not really a robot,

but this is a charging station in China

with a gantry above the cars.

And you can pull the gun or the plug down

to charge a vehicle.

I think this is a fantastic idea.

We only work in an advanced civilization like China.

People are respectable and look after things.

So we'll see.

Hopefully this will arrive in Australia in the next century.

But for now, this is the case in China.

But in most standard shopping centers,

I reckon they're going to get their cables pinched at peak

and kids are going to try and do a bit of a Tarzan on them

and swing from one car to another for sure.

Is there something like this for buses though?

True, but I mean, they're in a private compound.

It's all under guard.

But as Quave Head says,

can you imagine what happened on a Friday night

with some people who aren't as respectful
