And it was an interview with Mr.
Elliot Robert of PVW fame.
So Elliot has been the editor of PVW for how many years?
Oh, well over 20, 20 years.
Yeah, so great interview, talking about various aspects of his life
and the PVW magazine and the latest adventures with the magazine.
How him and Jamie Orr have become partners in, say, ensuring the survival of PVW.
Very good interview.
It was interesting, obviously a big throwback for me.
Like I've been banned PVW since the mid 2000s, maybe early 2000s, actually.
And it was great to hear a story about how you get into a job in the magazines
and just fascinating to listen to.
I could have listened to another hour if he was going on for another hour.
That's the thing I really enjoyed hearing about the fact that
all those magazine guys knew each other.
Yeah, it wasn't like there was a rivalry between them,
that they all get on and they're all kind of in the same field
and appreciating the same thing, which is cars, which is pretty cool.
What stood out to me was his absolute dedication to the VW
and I knew he was in the VW, but obviously he is
because he's took over for once VW, but it was just as it came across.
I just shone through his just passion for VWs throughout the years.
And yeah, it was very good.
Some of the things I picked up on sort of throwbacks were the Dalbac Mark 4.
Oh, yeah. The JD Engineering cars.
Yeah, absolutely brilliant interview.
Yeah, I think those kind of cars, you're going to be of a certain vintage
to remember them like ourselves, but they're well worth looking back on
to try and find because they're absolutely incredible.
And you're part of the team now, Connor.
I am indeed.

So Connor is officially, did you mention that before in the podcast?
I well sort of alluded to writing a few features for it.
So Connor is my staff of PVW and almost big.
So I know it's interesting, Joe.
It's funny. I really enjoy writing those articles.
I've done three car features and one show feature now.
I am terrible at English.
Like seeing school, one of my weakest subjects, maths, science is all great.
English was absolutely horrendous.
Now, someone might spell check them on the or occasion for me.
But somebody's very good at English.
But like, see the difference between writing about a book you don't give a fuck
about versus writing about something you're passionate about, like a car show
or the car itself.
It makes such a difference.
That's changed through in your articles.
You can tell it's something we're passionate about.
But the other thing is to the way I do it is I think it's kind of different
than some people write their features is I actually interview.
So I'll phone a bit like doing this recording here, but I'll phone the person
and just talk to them by the car and they tell the story.
And I literally I'm just there to put it all together.
You know, it's I like the idea of the person themselves telling the story
of their car because I don't know the car.
You know, it's no good me trying to make something up.
I would rather they tell the story and I just kind of put all the parts together,
which is nice, try and get the information out of them.
Which is pretty cool.
But yeah, not quite lucky.
Like I've been reading it myself for 20 years.
And you know, you're like, I've always always liked the magazine
and I've always wanted to support it.
And I don't think there's any other better way I can support it than by writing for them.
So it's pretty good.
It's an institution of the VW scene and as a little to get subscribed and
support it, because if you don't, it'll be gone.
That's it. Yeah.
Like look at all the other like bands that he talked about and things like that,
like all great magazines, but all disappeared.
It's performance forward still going.
No, I think performance forward is still going.
But I thought it was gone and I seen something about it recently.
But if it is around, it's one of the very few that is still there.
I know like Fast Car went online and I mean, it's basically a website now.
You know, yeah, I say a band's eye, but you had so many different ones.
And now there's next to nothing.
Yeah.
Guys, like you're left with you and me are left with massive big piles of PVWs.
I actually think part of your pile, I donated to you, didn't I?
I was like, there's a whole load of doubles.
And I was like, I sort these out sort of thing.

Yeah, they're a car.
I actually like air cooled stuff to look out.
I really love the aesthetics of it.
But to drive them is not for me.
It's hard to be a well sorted beetle.
Some very, very good examples come to dub shed.
Even like there's a guy brings a few to Helen every year.
I can't remember his username.
It's on the top of my tongue, but he is like the type three
estates and stuff like that.
And he makes like the custom split rims and things for it.
And the work is absolutely incredible.
But I'm like, that is so cool.
But I would not want to drive it anymore in a bit of a mile.
You know, it's just like I appreciate beetles and campers
and all those weird notchbacks and all that sort of stuff.
I love to look at them at shows, but I have zero desire to own or drive one.
Not only silver, carbon, gear, beautiful, but again, not a van.
He's bringing the dub shed.

Well, I just wanted to say as when we were talking about Elliot,
obviously we're pretty heavily VW as everyone knows.
And we joke and we try to include some other makes and models as well,
because we do like other cars.
But getting Elliot as an interview was obviously like a massive deal
for us because we're all VW heads and I was thinking about it.
And I was like, we actually did quite a lot of pretty cool interviews
way back in the early days of the podcast.
We kind of peaked very early.
Covid helped a lot of things.
But yes, that's what I was going to say.
Covid obviously helped that people were hanging about
and we're happy to chat to somebody on the phone for a while.
But we had we had the couple of the Max Power guys.
We had Sean from Volkswagen America.
Back in like episode 10, like that's how long ago that was.
But I was just thinking if anybody had had started listening to us
from Elliot, those are good.
We did actually have someone this way back in the day
that you could go back and listen to if you wanted to.
Instead of us just waffling.
That's where we're good at.
Oh, we love waffle.

Yeah, well, I've been pretty busy with car stuff over the past few weeks
since probably even before the last one,
because we didn't do an awful lot of our own car chat on the last episode.
But I'll start off with the daily.
So the superb I decided it's staying for another year.
I had been discussing other cars
and potentially getting a new daily driver,
but I had made the decision the superb was going to stay for another year.
And therefore I needed to do some of the maintenance work
that I had been putting off doing because I was considering selling it.
So shout out to motorfix, our former sponsor.
And they did time belt, water pump,
wishbone service, all this kind of stuff to it.
Great, happy days.
But now I think because the superb knows that it's staying,
it's starting to really try my patience.
Astronomous behave?
Yes, because the week after it was in motorfix and I was in Scotland,
the edge management like came on.
Oh, delightful. Great.
So it was still driving fine
and there was no errors coming up on the screen or anything.
And so I just sent her on and Connor plugged it in for me when I got home.
And it came up with a load of, you know,
10 pages of numbers and letters and failure to close loop and this kind of thing.
So I sent a few screenshots to palms like,
hey, any chance you could translate this for me and see what it actually is.
So it seems like it's one of the auxiliary water pumps for the intercooler.
Apparently that's the thing.
So it's going back to motorfix next week to have that done.
Oh, very good.
And then I don't know if I've mentioned before.
I probably have on and off.
Wonder has the new water pump made more pressure.
No, I on something else or I don't know.
The weakest point sort of maybe.
I don't know.
I guess they probably are all part of the same system.
I wouldn't be too modern for my book.
Very coincidental.
New water pump and then the auxiliary.
So, yes, I've had an ongoing issue since.
Two years ago with the door lock module in the driver's door.
So it has keyless entry and keyless start.
And the keyless opening stopped working on the driver's door.
Two years ago when we got back from Helen and been at the airport car park.
And suddenly it stopped working.
And I thought maybe just the battery was flat after we'd been at the airport or something.
But it has been an issue ever since.
Sometimes it'll lock the door.
Sometimes it won't.
Sometimes the door won't open once it's been locked.
You can open it.
It opens and locks fine with the key, but the keyless function doesn't work anymore.
It does work for locking the door, but not for opening the door.
I've got used to it.
I just click the button on the key fob now and it's not really a drama, but it is a bit annoying.
And then it started the start of this week to do a thing where.
When the doors, when the door is locked and it won't open,
usually what I would then do as my work around is hold down the open button on the key
and the windows go down.
I can reach in and open the door from the inside and that always worked.
But on Tuesday morning, I think it was.
I did that and it didn't work because the driver's window didn't go down.
All the other three windows went down.
So the door was like deadlocked, basically.
Not a little.
So I went round to the passenger side, tried to pull the handle from the inside,
wouldn't open from the inside either.
Stand, click in the button, lock on, lock on, lock that sometimes works.
It just obviously kicks it back into life or whatever.
No, nothing went into the house.
Connor was there and I was like, this fucking door won't open.
He came out to have a look at it.
And as soon as I hit the button, it immediately opened because.
Magic hand and McCann.
So that was grand.
It worked for a few more days.
After that, I was driving around, going to work, whatever.
And yesterday, after the cars and coffee, which we'll talk about in a minute,
after lunch, went out into the car park of the restaurant
and it did the same thing again.
Door wouldn't open, window wouldn't go down.
So Connor very gracefully climbed through the driver's seat from the passenger seat
and he drove home.
But on the way home, we decided we need to stop at Screw Fix
and get a couple of bits and sure we'll go for a McFlurry while we're at it.
But it wasn't until we got into the drive through that we remembered
that the window wouldn't go down and the door wouldn't open.
So Connor had to again, very gracefully, I will say.
Did you pay the Benny Hill music when he done this?
Lean the driver's seat back and order through the rear window.
Oh, delightful.
The choice of the chance of power to be fair.
And then also your woman had to hand us the ice creams in through the back window.
We need video footage right now.
That woman didn't react either.
She's probably seen worse.
This is a normal day.
Yeah, it's just probably like this deck head.
There's probably people that do that to wind up where I was like,
literally going, I am sorry.
Or there's people that drive about and they never fix their window mechanism.
Well, there's one to my right.
Yeah.
So it's the door, not the window.
What is a new module?
Or is the locker?
I think so, I don't know.
I think it's the door lock module.
So I might get around to fixing that at some point.
I have been talking about it for two years.
It'll all end in a Blur of Fury some night.
And that'll be a smash the window.
Yeah, I was actually thinking about it.
I was like, what if I crashed and couldn't get out?
But I have a little, I have a hammer in the car anyway.
So I guess if I was deadly stuck, I couldn't get out of the car.
McLaren, Senna's or something.
They kept going on fire in the doors lock or something.
I'm not sure.
Or maybe it's just they went in the fires on.
Just when you talked about that there, people not being allowed out of the car.
Or is it Tesla's?
I know what happened.

How did they update the software or something?

Because obviously they have the additional armor and security and stuff.
And it was locked in and they couldn't get out.
Yeah, that's scary.
Like there's something on that stuff.
That was one of the Shogun sports.
Was it one of the Shoguns?
15 years ago, probably.
I was horrible.
So tell us your good news.
So that's the superb, you know, some good, some bad.
It is what it is.
They are 32, happy to report good bit of progress on it, on the stripping of the
SpongeBob's parts off it, all the parts that look as though they've been under the sea.
But quite a lot of them are now off.
It has been a struggle with some of it, certainly with rusty bolts and
just heavy, rusty parts and the back end of Mark Four's.
Are very different to the back end of Mark Sevens.
So like your full drive, Mark Sevens, your trail and arms are like pressed thick steel
or like the Mark Four stuff is big cast.
Heavy arms.
Yeah, so everything's heavy and stinging.
Stinging isn't the word.
My every night coming in, I've been like, my hair is full of rust because every time
every knot or bolt you go to to put a socket or a allen key or whatever into it,
you have to hammer them in.
There's no other option because everything's so crusty.
Brings back, bring back to the day of me breaking Mark Two golfs.
Aye.
Just hammering sockets on.
Same shit.
But as soon as you hit anything with a hammer, you just get shored with rust.
Yeah.
So it's lovely when you get it in your eye.

component out, which was basically the diff, which was still attached to the rear
subframe and the two arms and the drive shafts, all as one kind of unit.
We took it all out in one go.
And then we discovered that there's supposed to be a plug for the Haldex
in the boot that you obviously need to unplug to drop the Haldex unit down.
There's no plug in the boot.
Oh, it's on up the loom, is it?
No, it's supposed to be a plug in the boot.

We're still on a little snippy snip.
So when we lifted up the the boot floor, it was all like you could tell it wasn't
factory. It was like insulating tape like plastic, insulating tape all the way through.
In the world.
No idea.
So Stefan started to follow it back, broke the plug, maybe or something,
taken it out and they've just put it all together.
I don't know and we put a plug in.
They just put it of course at this stage, we had the four bolts out
and we were holding the thing under the car.
So the idea was we would drop it down, somebody would hold it
and then somebody would come in and unplug the top and would lift it away.
But in the one there wasn't a plug within, OK, it'll be in the boot.
So we had to then party and I were basically like kneeling down with the subframe.
So like lowering ourselves down as Lee
dropped the car down and then Stefan could get into the boot
to start looking for the plug all while we were holding us going.
Oh, my God.
And then at that point, we still didn't know.
We thought there was well, we thought there was supposed to be a plug,
but we didn't know if it was on top of the Halidex unit or in the boot
or somewhere along the length of the loom.
I were runs up into the quarter panel.
So Stefan was stripped away all the while.
We were like, oh, my God, this is heavy.
And then it turned out that it's supposed to be.
It's going to be obvious and it just wasn't there.
So we had to just cut it in the end and we'll fix it later.
But I means the future proves it.
But it's just some diesel dickhead there before you kind of thing.
Fun, fun, fun.
But a lot of it's out now, which is great.
It really feels when you look at it now, it feels like there's progress
but made a lot of stuff isn't there anymore, which is great.

Prop shaft, tank, front subframe, front wheel and brake assemblies.

So and then bumpers and whatever else as well.
But yeah, the cups, you were talking about the cups on your TT
where the the rear arm goes into the body.
That's kind of a cup where it bolts it through.
And that's a known place for them to rot, basically, is in that kind of indent.
Mine has, you reckon yours didn't have these anymore,
like little plastic covers that sit in that indent that they were still on mine.
And I was dreading, I pulled them out.
I was like, oh, please.
And thankfully, I should touch wood when I'm saying this,
it looks like new up in there.
It's like the plastic thing has obviously totally protected it because it's good.
This is like my up into the shot.
So like, do you know, like the creamy colored like
like primer they've used in the panels, that's what's in there.
That's what's in there.
And it's just nice.
It looks like the factory wax and I bring it's incredible.

Hopefully there aren't any lessons when they're building Mark seven or six.
Well, Mark fours are usually pretty bad, like to be fair.
But that that thing's few scabs.
That's the really unusual thing about mine.
I said, well, I don't know if it is or not, but you said the bore was pretty similar.
The body and floor are fine.
There's a little scab here or there, but a surface rust, whatever.
The pinch welds are a bit gone because they always are, they get crushed.
But when you look at the body and floor in comparison
to all the arms and wishbones, you would say that these did not.
These are not the same car.
Like they they're totally different.
You only get like heavy cast pieces and they flick big rust.
That's what's happening.
Well, it were if it was a stamp piece, it couldn't flick that
because there's been a warm left, you know, I was underneath the Mark seven there
last week, just swapping the tires over.
And like the MBCs, one of the in six months.
And you realise how harsh the roads are here.

Salts and they're looks like the corridors have been in two years.

And they're not rusted around.

rods, drop links, and that's only the start of it.

Oh, I got a little plastic trim piece for the engine cover, which covers
where the plug leads kind of go.

It just looks like a piece of black plastic and you can get fiberglass
or whatever, but then I was like, the texture won't be the same as the
engine cover.
It might look a bit weird or whatever.
So I've ordered a genuine one.
So it's come, the heater matrix and all the suspension type parts.

And last piece of news, I think, about some new hammers.
Cause I was basically trying to hammer sockets and stuff on and be a
drive shaft out with a teeny little ball peen hammer because that was all
I had.
It's like a toffee hammer.
So I now have three big lad hammers, two Milwaukee's and one screw fix
special, cheap bait and hammer.
I guarantee you'll still have it in 20 years.

I think the diverter valve's in a different place on the this 30 engine to

So I pulled the air suspension apart.

I have as a knockoff of a VU four Acura one.

Andy McRal works was doing the photo shoot of my car and I went to move it and
it just wouldn't air up the front, right?
And I quickly reteat everything in so that the front was just off one valve and
it worked fine and then it became one of those.
I'll get that changed and it didn't like my door lock module.

You know, it now works.
So it's fine.
Yeah.
It affects itself as self-healing.
So I didn't know what to expect because it never taken one apart.
So I ended up making a wee tool to do it, stripped it down and I found a tiny
wee piece of plastic jamming the valve, put it back together, bang, sorted.
So it was like, thank God.
So although they're not expensive, you can buy one for like 150 quid now.
But, you know, I'd rather spend that 150 quid on something else when you can
fix it because I'm going to redo the whole boot install.
I want to put a sub into the car, get the audio working on it and put a, like
that's the boot build from the mark three, which is eight year old and it looks
at, you know, it's, it's bad now.
So I want to redo everything.
I want to put a new compressor and a new tank.
So I have a right bit to spend.
So I've been doing that.
And then the other thing was my BBS steering wheel, the horn never worked.
The mechanism was always broken for it.
So I ordered a new replica one and I can use the original genuine badge with
the swap it over.

So I'll get all that going.
Went to Fed at the other night and the boss I'm using is from my Polo back in
the day, which had an airbag, which means it doesn't touch the copper.

the team up, take half and half, do a whole each.

And by that stage, you were fed up.

Um, so by the stage we got to selection day, I think would just over half the
holds fell, they're just on there.

So it cut the workload down a bit, but it still took a good part of the day.
Let's take six hours, I think, or at least five and a half, six hours to get through.
Um, say with thousand and six entries for roughly 240 spaces or so.
So you can understand why there's a lot of disappointed people.
Um, and yet again, there's people that put in excellent entries with full
descriptions and great photos and it doesn't matter how many times we put it in
social media, talk about it in here, whatever.
There's people just put in very, very lazy entries with bad pictures.
We don't give feedback on why a car didn't get indoors or whatever.
You know, we're not here to, you build your car for you.
If it gets indoors, happy days.
Great, you know, but always build your car for yourself.
That's the number one thing we always say, but there was a few messages, you know,
why did my car not get indoors?
And literally the first thing I do is I go and look at the entry and it looked
and it was horrendous.
No description, one line description and crap pictures in the dark or not showing.
If you've said you have a certain interior or a certain engine or whatever,
please expand, put some photos of it.
We need to see it.

I just responded and said, look, here's why I can't give you specific feedback on
your car, but I can tell you about your entry and this is why you didn't give
yourself the best chance.
A lot of times people accept it and then there's a little time never accepted.

Ferrari started pretty strong.
Ferrari started fairly strong too.
Driver wise, not strategy wise.
Not strategy wise because.
That's really shocking for Ferrari.
It is, they're absolutely not a circus outfit.

She was very well respected in sport
and Fangio was a big fan of her and gave her absolute kudos and said she was great.
There was another lady then who is to this day
the only female ever to score points in a Formula One race.
Her name was Lela Lombardi.
She was another Italian and unfortunately,
the race that she was competing in was I can't remember exactly where it was.
It was one where a car crashed into the stands and spectators were killed.
So the race was cancelled after just over half race distance.
So still counted as a completed race,
but they only got half points for it.
So she scored one point, but she actually only scored half a point.

But she was still the only female to ever score points in an F1 race.
Moving on to more modern times.
Laura Mueller made history at the start of 2025.
She's the first ever female race engineer in Formula One.
She works for the Haas team.
She's Auckland's race engineer.
And Hannah Schmidt is the head of strategy at Red Bull.
So they're both which has been incredible the last few years,
like the call she has made.
Isn't there a lady from Northern Ireland works in the F1?
So she's my fifth pick on my list.

And she now works as a pundit and commentator on the sky coverage.
And she's absolutely fabulous.

It's not the end of the world, but it was always notorious that over 100,000
there can't be issues.

and send it to be overhauled.

And there's a company and then you can buy repair kits as well.
So it's not it's not a tool.
Gearbox replacement.
It used to be back one day because it used to be, oh, that's going to cost you
three or four grand, it's not the case anymore.
Generally, like it's already his day for that's why he bought it over
a Tuareg because Tuareg is a cheap cheap prices for parts.
Whereas a Q5 is a four inch parts.
So it's not the common parts.

It's a CR TDI, fairly reliable.
