Tax Act can think of a million things more fun than filing taxes.
00:09
Tax Act is going to name some now.
00:11
Sitting in traffic, folding a fitted bed sheet,
00:15
listening to your coworker talk about his fantasy team,
00:19
digging a hole, digging an even larger hole
00:22
next to that original hole.
00:24
Unfortunately, Tax Act's filing software
00:26
can't make taxes fun.
00:29
But Tax Act can help you get them done.
00:32
Tax Act, let's get them over with.
00:34
The worst part about loving cars might just be buying them
00:38
But on eBay, behind every car and part
00:40
is a story waiting to be shared.
00:42
I read about this guy who bought a 2020 Porsche Cayman
00:45
that was well-loved.
00:46
I mean, there are plenty of Caymans
00:47
in great condition on eBay,
00:48
but this one needed some work.
00:50
This guy buys it and rebuilds the whole thing
00:52
all with parts he found on eBay.
00:54
And now that nearly scrapped Cayman
00:56
is out tearing up the track.
00:57
From Toyota's to Aston Martin's,
00:59
eBay has thousands of cars
01:00
and the largest online selection
01:02
of vehicle parts and accessories.
01:03
eBay, things, people, love.

01:56
Thank you and welcome.
01:56
Yeah, let's, we're looking forward to this.
01:58
Another hour of great auto repair radio.
02:00
I'm happy to be here for all of you.
02:02
Let me just point out, too, real quick,
02:04
accompanied by the name of PowerProbe.
02:06
I think a lot of us are familiar with them.
02:07
They've come out with a new meter.
02:11
Great approach to solve a very old,
02:13
hard problem looking for vehicle electrical draws.
02:16
The DM300 gives us the ability
02:19
to do millivolt draw testing across fuses.
02:25
And it does the calculations inside.
02:26
You know, it used to be that we would measure
02:31
millivolts across a fuse, do a look up on a chart,
02:34
and then decide is that a correct
02:37
millivolt number or not.
02:39
The DM300 does it for you,
02:42
and it makes the conversion right on the display,
02:46
and it tells you what the amperage draw is.
02:48
It makes that conversion from millivolts to amperage,
02:51
So we're gonna be road testing that
02:54
in the coming week, so I just wanted to point that out,
02:56
and we're looking forward to doing that.
02:58
We'll get that up on our YouTube channel,
02:59
and we'll talk about it up here,
03:00
and I betcha I can wrangle Brandon
03:03
to get me someone to interview my contact guy
03:06
over there at PowerProbe.
03:07
But right now, let's go over and talk to,
03:11
let's go to John and Louisiana, New Iberia,
03:14
Louisiana, the home of Tabasco, Sauce John?
03:19
Okay, what's going on with you
03:21
in your 2018 Honda Accord?
03:24
I have a 2018 Honda Accord 2.0
03:27
that I love, love driving it,
03:30
and I started having some problems
03:33
with needing to add coolant to it.
03:37
Took it to my mechanic, he checked it,
03:40
did a pressure check,
03:42
replaced my radiator cap, continued,
03:46
and I was still losing coolant,
03:48
and it started throwing codes,
03:51
went to back to my mechanic,
03:53
and tested it and said,
03:56
I have a blown head gasket between cylinder one and two.
04:00
And as I started looking into that
04:03
and getting on some Honda forms,
04:05
I found out that this is quite the issue.
04:11
Absolutely, it's become a very common phenomena,
04:14
and it's funny how the industry is just accepting it.
04:18
I know there's a couple of conversations
04:21
from Honda about it, but there's no recall.
04:23
And the only answer I've got is,
04:25
because everybody always wants to know,
04:28
They just either haven't hit the numbers yet
04:30
or they just don't have anything definitive,
04:32
and usually it's on higher mileage vehicles.
04:35
How many miles are on your car?
04:40
And I talked to a mechanic,
04:42
and he talked to one of the Honda mechanics
04:45
that he trained in the area,
04:48
and he said it's becoming a very big issue.
04:51
100,000 miles, they're failing.
04:54
And I blame part of it on,
04:56
you're a turbocharged car, correct?
05:00
There's that extra pressure on an engine,
05:03
because we've got to make things turbocharged.
05:05
And it's one of the reasons I cringe at it,
05:07
but it's hard, you can't find anything today
05:10
that isn't turbocharged.
05:12
It's almost like, and you can't find anything today
05:14
that's not CVT transmission, the other weak link,
05:17
in a lot of vehicles, Honda included.
05:19
And, you know, that's an issue.
05:23
So I would tell you to get it done,
05:25
obviously Honda factory parts,
05:28
and keep all your receipts,
05:29
because you never know what the next six months
05:31
to a year will bring,
05:33
in terms of if Honda will actually,
05:35
you know, do anything about it and make good for it.
05:38
You know, it just takes a certain number
05:42
of complaints, complainers,
05:44
and I would tell you to complain to Honda.
05:46
I would tell you to talk to Honda
05:47
and say, look, I'm a loyal Honda customer,
05:49
I'm assuming, right, John?
05:50
You've had more than a few of these, you know?
05:52
I've had a bunch of Hondas all the way back
05:55
to the Honda CRX when it first came out
05:58
and made car of the year.
05:59
Honda, Odyssey, Accords,
06:02
and I've always driven those cars,
06:04
300,000 plus, never had any engine troubles.
06:08
And I've explained to you,
06:11
I've had an issue with a 2017 Honda Civic,
06:15
with the CVT going out.
06:17
And I was like, what?
06:21
Another common failure.
06:22
Yeah, another common issue
06:25
that they've had their issues with.
06:27
Did you have the timing chain problem on your two-liter?
06:32
Okay, you may, and I guess when they're doing the head gasket
06:35
to look to see if there's any updated parts
06:37
The two fours had problems,
06:39
the two leaders had some issues.
06:41
The one-fives, the one little one-five-liter
06:43
turbocharged motor has some engine issues.
06:46
It's funny how they've engineered themselves into a corner.
06:51
I think that they've got these weak links going on
06:54
and it's not just Honda.
06:56
A lot of the car companies
06:57
are going through it right now.
06:58
And I'm not sure why.
07:00
Did the engineers get together and collude?
07:03
It's sad because I have been such a loyal Honda guy.
07:07
My wife has a 2016 Honda Pilot.
07:10
And when I found out I had CVT issues,
07:13
I was like, do I have a CVT transmission in that?
07:16
And I don't and I'm happy.
07:18
Yeah, but you know, it's making me look
07:22
at some other brands, you know?
07:23
And maybe we need enough people out there
07:28
in the radio land to raise some smoke
07:31
about this issue with the 2.0.
07:33
Yep, well, and that's part of the reason.
07:35
You know, listen, I went to you,
07:36
I wanted to hear this story,
07:38
and that's a fair point.
07:39
I always like to present this to the radio audience
07:42
and say, hey, what's everybody else doing?
07:44
Well, by all means, we want to hear about it.
07:46
But I also want to encourage you,
07:48
I would talk to the dealership where it's being done.
07:51
I would talk to Honda corporate.
07:53
Look, I'm a loyal Honda customer.
07:55
You know, we know this is a problem
07:58
just because it hasn't hit bulletin level yet.
08:01
Doesn't mean that it's not an issue.
08:02
And I want to know what you're going to do
08:05
They've got to do something for you.
08:06
You know, it'd be nice.
08:07
Hey, you take a 50-50 split, right?
08:09
They do some labor and parts and, you know,
08:13
just to see, yeah, you know, it's...
08:16
Because what I'm hearing is that's a $5,000 problem.
08:19
Yeah, it's a big problem.
08:21
It's an expensive problem.
08:23
Yeah, it's a chunk, right?
08:25
And they're going to tell you,
08:27
well, you know, it's got 140,000 miles on it, Mr. John.
08:30
And, you know, your answer is going to be,
08:32
well, look at my oil change records, you know?
08:35
And I should ask that question in all fairness.
08:38
I'm sure, but have you done your maintenance,
08:40
you know, as per what they call for?
08:43
And you've got your receipts for oil changes
08:46
and, you know, your 60, your 90,000-mile service,
08:49
if they require you to change coolant
08:51
at a specific time interval and, you know, mileage,
08:58
So, you know, it kind of makes the argument,
09:00
hey, I did everything you told me to do.
09:02
I did all the service.
09:04
You know, what's going on?
09:06
And, you know, you want to keep me as a customer.
09:09
You got to do something for me.
09:10
The power's in your hands.
09:12
It makes me think of the Aaron Brockovich movie.
09:17
We just need one person to scream loud and a lot.
09:21
And sometimes you get the industry's attention.
09:25
While you get your younger person
09:27
that's real good on social media
09:30
and they don't like the heat that that can bring.
09:32
You know, it takes a certain number of complaints.
09:37
It starts off, you know, when they have failures
09:39
like this, it starts off as a service
09:42
campaign dealer level.
09:44
You know, hey, Mr. Honda dealer,
09:46
if you see XYZ customer come in
09:48
and they've got this particular problem,
09:51
we want you to do this, this routine,
09:53
this method, this replacement.
09:55
And we want to try and nip this in the bud.
09:56
After the campaign level,
09:58
let's say campaign level is 100 cars.
10:00
I'm exaggerating because, you know,
10:02
who knows what the numbers are,
10:04
but just to show you the proportion.
10:05
For them to write a bulletin,
10:07
that number goes from 100 to 1,000.
10:11
Because understand, when they write a bulletin,
10:14
not only are they writing a bulletin
10:15
and admitting that they've got a problem,
10:17
they're gonna run it through legal,
10:19
they're gonna run it through marketing,
10:21
they're gonna talk to everybody
10:22
because now this represents the company
10:23
and it's public information.
10:26
And then for it to go from bulletin level to recall,
10:31
it takes a lot more, it's a much bigger number
10:35
that 1,000 incidents becomes 100,000 incidents
10:42
You know, the concern there is that,
10:45
and this is, you know, they haven't had enough
10:49
or as many complaints as required yet
10:51
because they will recall something
10:53
before the government tells them to recall it
10:55
because if the government says recall,
10:57
if the government makes them recall it
11:00
And the fine on vehicle recalls went up quite a bit,
11:04
five, six years ago, that's what started
11:06
all the heavy recall incidents.
11:08
If you recall with the airbag scenarios
11:10
and everything that we went through
11:12
between 2015 and 2020, that's what started all that.
11:15
So document everything, John, talk to the dealer,
11:19
talk to Honda corporate,
11:20
tell them you wanna open up a complaint case,
11:23
they've got to do something for you,
11:24
otherwise you're gonna fix this and move on
11:26
to the next one, you're not the first person
11:27
I know of that went through this
11:29
and my advice to them is exactly
11:30
what I'm telling you here, it may take a while
11:32
but I'd be willing to bet you'll get something eventually.
11:35
And the only other thing I would like to add is
11:37
low profile tires and rims are good for one thing, a photo.
11:43
The best thing I did was get rid of them
11:45
and get real tires and real rims.
11:47
You know, they're good for two things,
11:48
they're good for a photo
11:50
and for generating bad wheels
11:53
and chopped up tires when you hit a pothole.
11:56
Well, I work in the offshore oil industry,
12:00
so if I get off of a boat at two in the morning,
12:02
I'm not gonna look at my tire
12:04
and put an air gauge on it.
12:05
And I've ruined about three or four tires
12:08
driving down the highway at night when I hit my tire
12:14
Let the car be fun but make it practical
12:20
John, it was a pleasure, sir.
12:22
I hope they solve it for you.
12:23
If you feel the need, you know where to find us,
12:25
you give us a call back
12:27
and we're glad to talk about this again
12:28
and we'll keep everybody updated
12:30
on your trials and tribulations, all right?
12:33
Come down and eat some good Cajun food
12:35
and go to basketball.
12:37
I might take you up on that, John.
12:39
You be well, my friend.
12:41
You're very welcome.
12:42
I'm Ron Ananey in the car doctor.
12:43
I'll be back right after this.
12:46
Lately, car buying has become a pretty dull experience
12:49
but on eBay, behind every car and part
12:52
is a story waiting to be shared.
12:54
Like this guy I read about
12:56
who bought a 2020 Porsche Cayman GT4 on eBay.
13:02
I mean, there are plenty of Caymans
13:03
in great condition on eBay
13:05
but this one needed some work.
13:07
That's just the start of the story.
13:09
So after this guy gets a great deal on his dream car,
13:12
he rebuilds the whole thing
13:14
with all these parts he found on eBay.
13:16
Performance brakes, suspension, body panels,
13:19
the works guaranteed to fit.
13:22
Next thing you know, this nearly scrapped Cayman
13:25
was out there on the track as a full blown race car.
13:28
You're ready to go daily driver,
13:30
your next resto mod,
13:31
Hello Lotus Elon and the parts to finish it.

14:58
I love doing emails.
14:59
Ron, love listening to your show.
15:00
I've been a long time listener since the days of New York.
15:03
Thought you might like this little story
15:05
this comes to us from Daniel.
15:06
I dropped my car off yesterday
15:07
to have a regular service
15:08
and some minor suspension work done.
15:10
I picked it up this afternoon
15:11
and paid the nearly $800 bill
15:13
and went to start it up in the yard.
15:15
Straight away I noticed a misfire.
15:17
The car was shaking and struggling to maintain an idle.
15:20
I went back into the office to report the issue
15:22
as it definitely wasn't misfiring
15:24
when I dropped it off, but now it was.
15:26
I'm not unreasonable and the misfire
15:28
could be entirely coincidental
15:29
and have nothing to do with the work done,
15:31
but I was told at the desk
15:32
without them even looking at the car,
15:34
we only did an oil change,
15:35
which meant to me, not our fault.
15:38
And that it could be a foul plug
15:40
for moving it back and forth in the workshop
15:41
and to take it home down the freeway
15:43
and hope that it would clear itself
15:44
and if not bring it back tomorrow.
15:47
I wasn't confident taking the car home
15:48
as the idle was that bad
15:50
and most certainly I didn't want to break down
15:51
on the freeway either.
15:53
They were very reluctant to spend any time.
15:55
I've got to wonder, is this a long term?
15:58
I guess it is his long term mechanic.
16:01
He goes on to say, Daniel goes on to say,
16:03
I had to really press them to at least put a scan tool on it,
16:06
which they finally did.
16:07
By the way, when they lifted the hood,
16:10
the engine to plug in the tool,
16:12
it was idling so badly,
16:13
it was visibly rocking side to side.
16:16
This has to be an older German car.
16:18
The mechanic hooked up the scan tool
16:19
and it reported a misfire.
16:20
He checked around the engine bay
16:22
and under one of the plastic valve covers,
16:24
discovered a vacuum pipe,
16:25
one end of it not attached to anything
16:27
as soon as he reconnected it, the misfire went away.
16:30
It would seem as part of the oil change
16:31
and removing some of the plastic shrouding,
16:34
the pipe became dislodged.
16:37
Again, I'm not unreasonable
16:38
and I know these things happen.
16:39
It could have been that it was unconnected
16:41
to the oil change and a brand new problem
16:43
that was just bad timing,
16:44
the reluctance to spend five, 10 minutes in the yard
16:47
and even the plug in a scan tool was disappointing,
16:49
knowingly sending a customer away
16:51
with a misfiring car
16:53
and to not at least put a scan tool on it,
16:55
at very least, am I being unreasonable?
16:56
So it turned out it was their fault.
16:58
It left him with a bitter taste
16:59
when after just paying $800,
17:01
they wouldn't give me the courtesy
17:02
of five to 10 minutes in the yard
17:03
to see where the car had started misfiring
17:06
upon my collection of it.
17:07
Anyway, I thought you'd be interested in hearing the story
17:09
and you might wanna talk about it on the show.
17:11
I am, I did, of course.
17:13
I'm certain that had I visited your workshop,
17:15
you'd not have knowingly sent me down the freeway
17:17
with a misfiring car.
17:19
Not at least without spending a few minutes
17:20
to try and see what the problem might be
17:22
before making a judgment call
17:24
on if it was safe enough to use or not.
17:26
Perhaps I'm unreasonable,
17:27
I'm expecting too much from my mechanic
17:28
in regards to Daniel.
17:29
No, Daniel, I'll tell you what,
17:30
and I read this, not to bash somebody,
17:32
but no, you're not being unreasonable.
17:35
Look, you leave a car with a mechanic,
17:38
it's in their charge, courtesy and consideration.
17:42
They're oven, they're trying to,
17:44
if they're doing the job right
17:45
and this is what you're looking for
17:47
and I think most people are,
17:48
you're looking to know that when you leave that shop,
17:50
the vehicle is in as proper working order
17:53
as the budget that supports it allows
17:57
and is proper working order
17:58
is what you had requested to be done.
18:00
Yes, I agree 100% that,
18:03
and it never should have come to that,
18:05
but I agree 100%, they were obligated
18:07
to go out and look at the car
18:08
if it wasn't making that
18:09
because it had to be making it when it parked it.
18:11
It sounds like some sort of crankcase ventilation tube
18:16
with manifold vacuum in it,
18:18
which allowed air to come into the engine
18:20
was knocked loose and it created a lean misfire.
18:23
Look at this, we have fuel system misfires, right?
18:26
But it created a lean misfire
18:28
and they had to know it upon finishing up
18:32
with the oil change.
18:34
I think it's really important
18:35
and one of the things my why change your oil here sign,
18:38
I have a sign up in the shop, why change your oil here?
18:41
Because it talks about,
18:44
you know, how other than what a quick loop does,
18:48
a quick loop doesn't do road tests, right?
18:51
A quick loop, they bring the car in,
18:52
they drop the oil, they change it
18:54
and boom, they go on with their day.
18:56
A repair shop has the ability
18:59
and a lot of shops don't do this
19:01
and I'm amazed and Daniel,
19:02
I think your shop is one of them
19:04
where they don't road test things
19:06
both prior and after the oil change.
19:10
And I think it's a very important piece of the puzzle.
19:13
I think they absolutely have to.
19:14
I think it's really important
19:16
that a shop does an oil change,
19:18
they do a road test both before and after
19:20
because they would have discovered this
19:22
and it would save them the embarrassment,
19:25
it would save you the aggravation
19:27
and perhaps they would come to you and say,
19:28
hey Daniel, by the way,
19:30
this tube falls out of the intake manifold
19:32
or falls out of the valve cover, it's easy enough.
19:35
The grommets are dried out, it's an older vehicle.
19:38
You would only be so happy to let's fix it,
19:41
let's order some parts and get it solved.
19:44
So yeah, I think they miss the mark, I really do.
19:48
And I think that their handling of it was poor.
19:52
I think a smart repair shop
19:56
keeps a scan tool by the door just for this occasion.
19:59
We keep an OBD2 only dedicated scan tool,
20:03
quick, simple, down and dirty right by the door.
20:05
The door tool we call it, we actually call it the door tool.
20:08
It's the old blue and gray and we can plug in
20:11
and we can get information out of a vehicle
20:13
in under a minute and any good customer is worth a minute,
20:17
any good customer is worth five minutes.
20:19
And somebody that's a long-term customer, of course.
20:22
And that's part of what it is.
20:23
This is a service business.
20:25
You can tell them from me, I think they miss the mark,
20:28
I think they should have done this differently
20:30
and know that it's up to them to make it up to you
20:33
but I would also think about
20:34
getting those grommets repaired and replaced.
20:36
Daniel, I appreciate the email
20:38
and I hope you got what you wanted out of this
20:41
and I hope they give you something good to make up for it.
20:43
I'm Ron Anini in the car doctor.
20:45
I'll be back right after this, don't go away.
20:48
Lately, car buying has become a pretty dull experience
20:51
but on eBay, behind every car and part
20:54
is a story waiting to be shared.
20:57
Like this guy I read about who bought a 2020 Porsche Cayman
21:00
GT4 on eBay, it was well-loved.
21:04
I mean, there are plenty of Caymans
21:06
in great condition on eBay
21:07
but this one needed some work.
21:10
That's just the start of the story.
21:12
So after this guy gets a great deal on his dream car,
21:15
he rebuilds the whole thing with all these parts
21:19
Performance brakes, suspension, body panels,
21:22
the works, guaranteed to fit.
21:24
Next thing you know, this nearly scrapped Cayman
21:27
was out there on the track as a full blown race car.
21:30
You're ready to go daily driver, your next Resto mod,
21:34
Hello Lotus Elon and the parts to finish it.
21:38

Let's go to the great state of Texas.
22:59
Let's go talk to Tyler and Waller.
23:01
Am I saying that right Tyler Waller, Texas?
23:05
Do I get a cowboy hat and spurs?
23:10
I mean, if you want one.
23:12
What's going on with your 2012 Nissan Frontier here?
23:16
This doesn't look good.
23:18
Well, I got it back from having the engine
23:21
remanufactured at Thunderbolt transmission
23:24
and came up with a hard start rough idle.
23:29
Throw in a few codes.
23:31
The main one's concern is the P0335.
23:35
The others are chassis codes.
23:39
So took it back to them.
23:41
They worked on it for three weeks.
23:44
Couldn't figure it out.
23:45
They checked wire harness and all that
23:47
and supposedly came back right.
23:51
So whatever I got, I got it back.
23:53
I went and looked at it.
23:55
Still tried changing sensors with OEM brand parts
23:58
because if you don't change both of them
23:59
at the same time, sometimes it,
24:01
the ECM compares the signal from both of them.
24:05
I think so it's called the code,
24:08
It's no luck on changing that.
24:12
Is this, so just a couple of things.
24:15
First of all, the chassis codes,
24:16
was it an 1130, 1132
24:18
and something sequential along those lines?
24:21
There was a C1130, C1132 and a C1163.
24:28
Disregard those for the moment,
24:30
as I'm sure you are.
24:32
Go take a look at Nissan Bulletin.
24:36
Nissan's got a couple of bulletins out on this.
24:38
The last one I saw was NTB16-116.
24:42
They did November of 16.
24:45
And they talk about how a Nissan of this generation
24:49
will set a fault code C1130 and so on
24:52
when it has a radic engine signal.
24:57
So, let's just take that off the plate for the moment.
25:02
What sort of scan tool do I have access to?
25:05
The Innova OBD2 scanner that hooks up
25:10
to a phone on the app or app phone.
25:13
So the downside to this is it's gonna be pretty slow.
25:19
Because it's got, it's an interface
25:20
that's probably a Bluetooth connection
25:22
to your phone, I'm guessing.
25:25
So the data being buffered isn't gonna be great.
25:29
When you, if you clear this fault code,
25:32
how long before it comes back?
25:35
The moment you start to crank, you turn the key again.
25:38
So will it come back with just turning the key
25:42
to the on position or will it come back?
25:44
It doesn't come back until you crank it.
25:47
The moment you start to crank it.
25:49
It goes through the code again.
25:50
So I think you've got an issue with the flywheel
25:57
just from my seat here.
25:59
The flywheel, the crank sensors
26:00
in the back of the block, correct?
26:02
Correct it is, yes.
26:03
It's a rear passenger side.
26:06
Right, and it's triggered off the flywheel.
26:09
And I'm wondering if when the machine shop rebuilt it,
26:14
did we grab something from a different Nissan?
26:19
They, you know, I've seen 12s and 13s be different.
26:22
I don't know that for a fact on yours.
26:24
I'd have to go look at part numbers,
26:25
but I'm thinking you've got an incorrect part
26:29
back on your vehicle.
26:30
What I'd love to do if I had access to it
26:33
is to put a lab scope on this.
26:35
And I'm not a lab scope guy.
26:37
I don't go running towards a lab scope
26:39
for every possible thing,
26:40
but I'd love to see electrically
26:41
what this signal is putting out.
26:44
And I bet it's putting out garbage.
26:47
I bet it's putting out an incorrect signal.
26:49
And what I would really like to do is,
26:53
let me ask you this question, Tyler.
26:54
Do you understand what I'm saying with a lab scope
26:56
and looking at the crank signal?
26:58
Yes, it compares the electrical signals and shows.
27:01
Right, it works similar to an EKG.
27:04
Yeah, if we had a bicycle, two sprockets,
27:07
big sprocket, little sprocket,
27:09
and there was a dot, a matching dot on each sprocket
27:14
as the small sprocket went around twice,
27:18
the big sprocket would go around once.
27:21
Okay, and we would see that relationship.
27:24
And if we had the ability to put a sensor on it,
27:26
we would see how it came up, it came up, it came up,
27:29
and they would index to each other.
27:31
You could actually overlay the signals
27:32
and see the beginning of and the end of each signal
27:35
and know that they're in alignment.
27:37
All right, I'd love to see that.
27:40
I'd love to see a cam crank, lab scope, sink test here.
27:44
And what am I seeing?
27:46
Because the fact that this comes up right away
27:50
as soon as you start to crank it,
27:52
but it doesn't come up when you just turn the key on
27:56
tells me this is not a circuit fault,
27:58
this is a performance fault.
28:05
if you took the crank sensor and unplugged it
28:09
and turned the key to the on position,
28:11
depending on how the software interprets it,
28:13
in most cases, it will set a crank sensor circuit fault,
28:18
not a performance fault, right?
28:22
It sets a performance fault in the sense
28:24
that it's plugged in, it can see the signal go down.
28:28
If it's monitoring that voltage in, voltage out,
28:31
it's seeing signal go in,
28:33
it's not seeing a correct change.
28:35
It's not seeing the voltage on that line
28:36
being pulled down as it would expect it to do.
28:39
So it's saying, hey, P0335, it's a plausibility error.
28:43
It doesn't make any sense to the computer.
28:46
So this is a real good example
28:49
of why I would use a scope.
28:51
And the scope is usually about four or five
28:52
on my list of when I pull it out.
28:54
There's a few things I look at first,
28:56
but I think in this case, I just wanna cut to the chase.
28:58
The fact that it wasn't there
28:59
before they did the engine,
29:02
because once you clear up that 335,
29:05
you're gonna find I'm willing to bet
29:07
that the C1130 clears up too, and the rest of them.
29:13
Does your, this is where it gets a little dicey.
29:17
If we had a scan tool, if you had a scan tool
29:19
that connected right to the OBD2 port
29:21
and it wasn't data buffered,
29:24
you might be able to see cranking RPM
29:27
because it would be fast enough.
29:28
It would be a direct connection.
29:31
You might be able to see cranking RPM
29:34
while you're cranking it if you disabled fuel, for example.
29:38
All right, and you could see crank signal out that way,
29:42
but I think the only hope we've got here
29:44
is we've gotta look at this as far as do a cam crank sink,
29:48
make sure that the engine is,
29:50
and for that matter, is the engine mechanically in time?
29:54
Can we check the mechanical timing?
29:56
But to do that, we've gotta take the front cover off.
30:02
The timing change on the front.
30:04
Dual overhead cam with a crankshaft in the bottom.
30:07
So, you know, this is an example where going
30:10
and doing cam crank sink with a lab scope
30:13
is gonna give us an electrical picture
30:15
of what kind of mechanical condition we're in.
30:19
Does the trans shop, and I have to ask,
30:21
why is a trans shop rebuilding an engine?
30:24
They do transmissions and motors.
30:27
They started with motors, moved to transitions,
30:29
but they keep, they kept the transmission
30:32
It just sounds funny, right?
30:33
Just, you know, the whole transmission, yeah, I get it.
30:36
But I would ask them, can they put a lab scope on this?
30:39
Can they do a cam crank sink?
30:41
Can they show you an electronic picture
30:44
of the bicycle sprockets and that they're in time?
30:49
And then as they rev it up, you know, go for a ride.
30:52
As you rev it up, you should see them maintain
30:54
that balance, that synchronization.
30:58
If this vehicle has variable valve timing on it,
31:00
you will see the cam, you know,
31:02
go forward, go backwards, accordingly.
31:04
Although I don't think a 12 had VVT.
31:07
I don't think it was in the cards for that generation.
31:11
I don't think it, it does.
31:12
No, it's a pretty basic.
31:14
This is a pretty basic bread and butter vehicle.
31:16
So, all right kiddo, but that's where I would go.
31:20
And you know, if you need more,
31:22
you know where to find me, all right?
31:25
Thank you very much.
31:26
You're very welcome.
31:28
To emphasize the point, the problem
31:30
with a repair like this is it ran good
31:32
till it spun the bearing and the engine failed.
31:35
And now it doesn't.
31:37
So, and the shop Tyler said had gone through
31:40
and done some inspecting of wiring,
31:43
things are connected correctly
31:44
and everything's backwards supposed to be.
31:47
It's time to do some basic testing.
31:49
And that's why I say it's time for a lab scope.
31:52
I wanna see crank signal.
31:54
I wanna see crank signal in relation
31:56
to the cam position sensor in relation to the cam signal.
32:00
I'm looking for an anomaly, something that's out of place.
32:04
The trigger device, all right,
32:07
everybody talks about the crank sensor.
32:09
What triggers the sensor?
32:11
The crank sensor reads and creates a signal
32:16
based on how it's stimulated off of either the flywheel
32:19
in some cases, in this case, the crankshaft,
32:22
but there is a tone ring on the crankshaft
32:26
that is indexed and it might have,
32:29
it might have 30 right angle or 30 right angle snubs.
32:34
Think of the top of a castle, right?
32:36
How the top of a castle looks,
32:37
it's a square top, square top, square top.
32:40
It might have 30 square tops evenly spaced except for one.
32:44
And that one is as the index,
32:47
so it means something to the crank position sensor
32:50
to the engine computer.
32:51
It's an index showing relationship of number one cylinder
32:54
or number three or however they're gonna index it.
32:56
Every manufacturer seems to do it a little different,
32:58
but my point becomes,
33:00
the only way you're gonna see that short
33:01
of taking the engine apart,
33:03
and you might end up taking the engine apart anyway,
33:05
is to use a lab scope and to look at that signal
33:08
and how does that signal index off of number one
33:11
cylinder firing in relation to the cam,
33:14
in relation to the cam,
33:16
I'm sorry, in relation to the crank
33:18
and does everything line up.
33:19
And that's where I think Tyler has to go.
33:22
I've done this enough.
33:24
This is not external wiring and it's not a PCM.
33:27
And I'm not saying it is or isn't.
33:28
I'm just saying, we've gotta go start testing.
33:30
Here's a perfect example of looking at,
33:33
tell me what's good, I'll tell you what's bad.
33:35
Let's go look at individual components and test them.
33:38
Take them out of the car in our mind and test them.
33:41
And the best way we're gonna do that is with a lab scope.
33:43
Now, the good news is there are easy ways to do this
33:47
depending upon what the shop has.
33:50
And I'm not sure that the engine shop is gonna have this,
33:52
but Tyler, if you're still listening,
33:54
if they find certain scan tools, snap on,
33:58
the snap on Triton, the snap on Zeus Plus,
34:01
both have lab scopes,
34:03
both have known waveform patterns in them.
34:06
So you'll see a good waveform pattern.
34:08
They'll even tell you how to hook up.
34:10
All right, so they don't have to necessarily
34:12
be a great scope person.
34:14
If they know how to hook up basic meter leads
34:16
and understand the theory behind it,
34:19
they'll be able to do this.
34:21
There's Pico, there's other launch makes a lab scope.
34:25
There's all sorts of different ways to look at this,
34:28
all different manufacturers,
34:29
but the thing I like about snap on
34:31
is it gives you a known good picture.
34:33
Of course, you can always go look at images also,
34:35
but Tyler, if you're learning on this one,
34:38
this isn't the car to learn on.
34:39
You've gotta go find somebody that's lab scope capable,
34:42
but those are the reasons and some of the things
34:43
and some of the options you have.
34:45
So I bet this is gonna come out to be,
34:47
if this is internal, there's something about that crank,
34:51
either the part, the way it was assembled,
34:54
the way it was indexed, something,
34:56
but a lab scope check, a cam crank sync check,
34:59
will tell us and get to the bottom of this once and for all.
35:03
I'm Ron Anany and the car doctor.
35:04
Let's pull over, take a pause.
35:05
We'll be back right after this.
35:08
Lately, car buying has become a pretty dull experience,
35:11
but on eBay, behind every car and part
35:14
is a story waiting to be shared.
35:16
Like this guy I read about who bought a 2020 Porsche Cayman GT4
35:21
on eBay, it was well-loved.
35:24
I mean, there are plenty of Caymans
35:25
in great condition on eBay, but this one needed some work.
35:30
That's just the start of the story.
35:32
So after this guy gets a great deal on his dream car,
35:35
he rebuilds the whole thing with all these parts
35:37
he found on eBay, performance brakes,
35:39
suspension, body panels, the works, guaranteed to fit.
35:44
Next thing you know, this nearly scrapped Cayman
35:47
was out there on the track as a full-blown race car.
35:50
You're ready to go daily driver, your next Resto mod,
35:54
Hello Lotus Elon, and the parts to finish it.
35:58
eBay has thousands of cars and has the largest

Amazon Pharmacy presents painful thoughts.
37:51
20 more minutes to kill in the pharmacy
37:53
before my prescription is ready.
37:55
Maybe I'll grab some deeply discounted
37:57
out-of-season Halloween candy.
38:01
I never had a chocolate pumpkin with raisins before.
38:05
Those were raisins, right?
38:07
Next time use Amazon Pharmacy.
38:09
We deliver, and no, those were not raisins.
38:13
Amazon Pharmacy, healthcare just got less painful.
38:17
How do you make chicken nuggets like 7,000% better?
38:20
Short answer, you let Taco Bell make them.
38:23
Long answer, start with all white meat chicken nuggets,
38:25
bread them in crunchy tortilla chips,
38:27
and serve them with Hidden Valley Diablo Ranch.
38:30
Yep, that's Hidden Valley Ranch
38:32
mixed with Taco Bell Diablo Sauce.
38:34
It's exactly what it sounds like
38:36
and somehow even better.
38:38
Simple math, spicy results.

38:53
Let's go to the sunny state of Florida
38:54
before they melt because I bet it's warm down there.
38:56
Let's go talk to Tom in Lakeland, Florida.
38:58
Tom, you're on with the car doctor, sir.
39:01
I have a 2005 Chrysler Seabring convertible.
39:06
It has 87,000 miles.
39:09
I've owned it for four years
39:11
and I've used mobile one oil with it.
39:15
And I'm thinking of switching to Amsoil,
39:21
which is a little bit more pricey.
39:25
Is it worth the investment?
39:30
Well, listen, Amsoil's good oil.
39:32
All right, I have no doubt in my mind.
39:34
I have no knocks against Amsoil.
39:36
I often wonder why Amsoil didn't make it bigger
39:38
and I always think it's distribution
39:40
and how they came to market or how they come to market.
39:44
Mobile one's good oil.
39:46
To me, mobile one's a lot easier to get than Amsoil.
39:49
And I'll tell you what, from a New Jersey point of view,
39:52
mobile one's easier to get than Amsoil.
39:54
I can pick up the phone and have mobile one delivered.
39:56
I can't do that with Amsoil.
39:58
Do I think Amsoil is a better oil for a 2005 Chrysler?
40:05
No, I don't think it's gonna matter a whole heck of a lot.
40:09
I think if what you've been doing is working,
40:12
car doesn't burn any oil, the engine's quiet,
40:14
the oil comes out relatively quick and clean,
40:17
no sludge buildup, it's working.
40:21
You know, it's that simple.
40:24
Just stay on top of your oil changes
40:26
and you'll be just fine.
40:28
Now, you know, having said that,
40:30
there are situations where I would use Amsoil
40:32
over anything else.
40:34
They've got some really great products.
40:36
They're gear oil, I think is really superb.
40:39
As a matter of fact, I ran Amsoil gear oil
40:41
in my first hot rod in the rear end,
40:44
57-olds rear with 48 Zoomies.
40:46
And you know, that rear never failed
40:49
where everybody else was having their issues
40:50
that rear never failed.
40:52
And I really believe it was part of the lubrication
40:55
because the Amsoil could take a beating.
40:57
So, there's a time and a place,
40:59
but you've started with Mobile One.
41:00
It's readily available to you.
41:02
I don't see the point in changing.
41:05
Now, would the filter be a difference?
41:08
What kind of filter are you using?
41:12
You know, good quality Fram.
41:14
That, you know, there's less expensive versions of Fram.
41:16
There's the HP version of Fram.
41:19
So there are better filters out there.
41:21
Me personally, I like a Wix.
41:24
I like Wix's performance version of a filter.
41:28
They make a great filter.
41:30
And I, you know, I would have no qualms with that.
41:33
There's, you know, it's funny, we, as a society,
41:36
we seem there's cheap versions of filters,
41:38
as expensive versions of filters,
41:40
there's a lot of good filters out there.
41:41
Honestly, I think most of the filters
41:44
are made by one of three companies
41:46
and then marketed under their own name.
41:48
So, I think to answer the question,
41:51
just use the better version of whatever's readily available
41:54
and quickly available.
41:55
And I think you'll be just fine.
41:58
So, you know, that coupled along with your mobile one
42:01
will be the way to go.
42:02
All right, I appreciate the call, Tom.
42:04
I'm Ron Ananey in the car doctor.
42:05
