00:04
We've all been there.
00:05
You hold onto a coupon, hoping to cash it in at the store,
00:08
but then you forget about it.
00:09
And suddenly, you've got a mountain of useless, expired coupons.
00:13
Do you think this one's still good?
00:15
Oh, mate, that expired in 1993.
00:19
Fortunately, there are better ways to save money,
00:21
like by switching to Geico.
00:22
You could save about $900 on car insurance
00:25
without ever touching a coupon.
00:27
Ooh, how about this one?
00:28
Half off floppy disks.
00:30
Now, you should try a bit of spring cleaning.
00:31
It feels good to save big.
00:33
It feels good to Geico.
00:34
The worst part about loving cars
00:36
might just be buying them and all the parts.
00:38
But on eBay, behind every car and part
00:40
is a story waiting to be shared.
00:42
I read about this guy who bought a 2020 Porsche Cayman
00:45
that was well loved.
00:46
I mean, there are plenty of Caymans
00:47
in great condition on eBay,
00:48
but this one needed some work.
00:50
This guy buys it and rebuilds the whole thing
00:52
all with parts he found on eBay.
00:54
And now that nearly scrapped Cayman
00:56
is out tearing up the track.
00:57
From Toyotas to Aston Martins,
00:59
eBay has thousands of cars
01:00
and the largest online selection
01:02
of vehicle parts and accessories.
01:03
eBay, things, people, love.

01:53
and ready to take your call.
01:56
Yep, here I am listeners, Ron Ananian at your service.
01:58
Another hour of car doctor and let's kick it off.
02:00
Let's go to the phones right away.
02:03
because we've got a lot of phone calls this hour.
02:04
Let's go to Norman.
02:05
Is that Norman in Queens County, New York?
02:07
Norman, welcome to the car doctor, sir.
02:08
Yes, thanks a lot, Ron.
02:10
You're very welcome.
02:11
I got a good, I got a perplexing problem
02:13
that everyone should have.
02:15
I've been listening to you since 1991.
02:17
Oh, you're making me feel-
02:19
You helped me out with my BMW a short time ago
02:23
when you diagnosed it
02:24
because specifically the fog wasn't working
02:27
and we got it fixed up.
02:29
Now my car's coming off lease, Ron.
02:35
and you can buy it back at $27,000,
02:42
2002, 2002, you mean?
02:47
Now the question comes in the repair.
02:49
When you come off lease
02:51
and you have to have the car fixed,
02:53
it is just crazy on prices for anything you want done.
02:59
And at what point do you tell yourself,
03:01
you know something?
03:02
It was, I'm 73 years old.
03:04
It was a good experiment.
03:06
My wife and I love the car.
03:08
Now let's just go back to our Toyota Rav4
03:11
that we always like
03:12
and we can buy a brand new Rav4
03:16
or we can take our chances,
03:21
which has 16,000 miles on it.
03:24
We don't do that much traveling
03:25
and then you have to put up with the repairs.
03:28
But when you look at the prices,
03:30
what it costs is thousands of dollars or something
03:33
that is just like out of, we can't afford that.
03:37
I mean, put it that way.
03:38
And if you buy a maintenance contract on it,
03:43
you might as well just release the car
03:46
or drop it and buy a regular car.
03:51
You know, cars have become a lifestyle, Norman.
03:54
And I don't know where this occurred.
03:56
I think in the last 20 years, it was a slow process.
04:00
But as you and everyone else is finding out,
04:04
and they cover the cost of repairs.
04:06
They cover everything, right?
04:07
You had a great three or two or three year lease,
04:09
whatever the term was, and it was a great experience.
04:12
Yeah, it was, that was your lifestyle.
04:14
And now it's time, you know, well, okay,
04:16
we've got to get another car.
04:18
And is it going to be a BMW again?
04:20
Needless to say, I would venture to guess that
04:23
to release that BMW is a very different deal now
04:26
than it was three years ago, or are the numbers the same?
04:32
Much more, because surprise, and the problem,
04:34
not the problem is that nothing's gone wrong with the car.
04:38
So as you always say,
04:39
always maintenance, maintenance, maintenance,
04:42
any new car, any car after three years,
04:44
you've got to think about brakes.
04:45
You've got to think about fluid changes.
04:47
You've got to think about transmission.
04:49
You're thinking about things have to be taken care of.
04:52
And now it's costing thousands of dollars to do that.
04:55
I think you are on the right beam, my friend.
04:58
I think the idea that, you know what,
05:00
you had the social experiment, you had the lifestyle.
05:03
Look, nothing wrong with a Toyota,
05:05
nothing wrong with a RAV4, right?
05:07
It's not a terrible car.
05:08
Well, that's the same way into the next thing,
05:11
because you always help me out with my 2005 RAV4.
05:15
Do I go for the hybrid?
05:18
Like I always heard you talk about the Prius
05:20
being the best hybrid they have.
05:22
But if we want the RAV4,
05:24
do we stick with a RAV4 hybrid,
05:27
or the regular RAV4, for a car that's going to last?
05:34
In other words, which one has the best repair history?
05:40
I think they both have a good track record, Norman.
05:43
I think both vehicles have the potential
05:45
to go the distance.
05:46
I think it's, what are you more comfortable
05:48
and what do you enjoy driving?
05:50
And I think you've got to go drive both vehicles.
05:52
Look, you're coming out of a rocket ship, all right?
05:55
And you're not exactly going to a biplane,
05:57
but you're going to a smaller rocket ship.
06:00
So, you know, how much more technology do you want,
06:03
or can you give up?
06:05
You know, there's a whole, again,
06:06
we're back to the lifestyle comment, all right?
06:09
This is going to be a very different experience for you
06:11
in the sense of, although you said you had a Toyota before,
06:15
so I don't think it's going to be totally different,
06:17
but, you know, listen, you want to enjoy driving, right?
06:21
You're 72, you said 72, 73.
06:26
It's going to be my last.
06:27
I know, it's your last car.
06:30
I know everybody gets like that.
06:31
I'm creeping up on you,
06:33
and I don't think I'm ever going to say
06:34
this is my last car.
06:35
You know, the day before I go,
06:37
I'm going to be out looking at cars,
06:38
but that's just me.
06:41
I think you've got to find something you like.
06:43
And listen, I wouldn't drive just a RAV4.
06:46
You know, maybe you want to go look at a Lexus.
06:48
Maybe you want to go look at something,
06:49
a little high line there.
06:50
And, you know, the same Toyota quality,
06:53
the same Toyota mentality.
06:56
And see where that gets you.
06:58
Part of the problem is, right now,
07:00
a lot of people are coming out of
07:02
what I would call expensive car leases,
07:05
BMW, Audi, Mercedes.
07:08
That car that they leased three years ago,
07:11
and they had to put,
07:12
oh, I'm going to guess $3,000 down,
07:15
and they've got a lease payment of $5,500, $600 a month,
07:18
they're finding it.
07:18
Now, all of a sudden, it's doubled down,
07:22
and $900, almost $1,000 a month,
07:24
depending upon the model.
07:26
You know it, you know it, yeah.
07:28
It's crazy, and what are you getting?
07:31
And you're going to see that change
07:34
as the economy changes, and it will.
07:38
It's just a matter of time.
07:39
There has to be an evolution here.
07:41
You know, if dollars are a concern, all right,
07:44
and I'm not saying that we want to throw money around,
07:47
I don't care, you know, I don't care how much money you have,
07:48
you just don't throw money around,
07:50
you got to show it respect, right?
07:51
Right, you want to use common sense.
07:54
The car is for transportation.
07:55
You know, my wife and I are just,
07:57
you know, just, what are we doing?
07:58
We're a few miles, but a good experiment,
08:01
you know, a good experiment having it,
08:03
it felt good, but now it feels stupid
08:06
buying a car for that much money.
08:09
It's like you'd like to spend your money
08:11
on other things in life.
08:13
Now, do you go out and lease the RAV4,
08:15
which is the second part of the question
08:17
that we haven't talked about.
08:23
Did you look at the lease numbers?
08:24
Yeah, the leasing went for like $350 a month.
08:29
But you know, something,
08:29
when you rent something, you're,
08:32
when you lease something, you're renting,
08:36
And he's like owning something to say it's mine.
08:39
And I always followed your advice.
08:41
He just do, I change the oil every 3,000 miles.
08:45
Transmission fluid, it was once a year,
08:48
I was going overboard on this at the car last.
08:51
And I'd rather just say it's mine.
08:53
I'm taking good care of it.
08:55
But at least I'm saying it's not rented.
08:58
And the lease I fell into because
09:01
you guess you were Googled into saying,
09:03
hey, look, I can afford a lease right now
09:05
because the monthly payments are there,
09:07
but you don't own the car.
09:09
Did you, did you drive a RAV for yet?
09:13
Oh yeah, we used to own one.
09:14
No, no, have you driven a new one?
09:17
No, no, I just went online and went looking at it.
09:20
And I see there, my wife likes it also.
09:26
We have to go down and try it.
09:26
It's something that we have to get into,
09:29
but we use you as our guru
09:32
and who to go new advice.
09:33
I appreciate that, Norman.
09:35
Call up Rod and find out what's happening
09:37
because you gave us, you gave us very,
09:41
when I was listening to you first came on the radio
09:45
and I was trying to follow along with you,
09:48
And I'm not mechanically apt to fix the car,
09:51
but I come to stand when you're talking about.
09:54
And I wish I could go back to my 1978 Crown Victoria.
09:59
That was the best car I ever had in my life.
10:01
But, and I was a carburetor car.
10:04
Well, you know, I was trained as a mechanic.
10:09
And I know what you're saying.
10:10
People say this to me, they like my old school approach,
10:13
but I was trained by old school.
10:15
You know, you've got to remember
10:16
my dad was an airline mechanic.
10:18
My dad was superintendent of maintenance
10:20
for American Airlines during the Second World War.
10:22
Worked on a lot of military aircraft.
10:24
He always taught me, you know, this is the procedure.
10:27
You got to follow the procedure.
10:28
There's steps one through six.
10:29
You don't skip the step four.
10:31
And Billy, my first boss in the gas station
10:34
that I still to this day considered
10:35
one of the smartest people I ever met.
10:37
He had a genius mentality.
10:39
You know, proper maintenance done properly.
10:41
I've said that about Billy,
10:43
but he just taught me procedure and process.
10:44
My dad was gone at that point.
10:46
But old school mechanics, you know what?
10:48
It's still nuts and bolts.
10:49
It still takes fluid.
10:50
It still takes basics in order to operate properly.
10:53
And that's what I think.
10:55
I think even with the technology today.
10:57
So, you know, and it's a lifestyle, right?
10:59
So you've got to look at that Toyota,
11:01
that RAV4 real quick.
11:02
And then I'll let you go.
11:03
That RAV4, you know, the cost to operate that RAV4
11:07
is going to be substantially less than BMW anything.
11:12
And, you know, you've got to look at that.
11:14
And chances are that that RAV4 will last you
11:16
easily 10 years, if not longer with proper care.
11:19
And that's a good spot to be in.
11:21
So that's a good spot to be in.
11:22
I believe what you always say,
11:24
maintenance all the way and take good care of it.
11:28
And it'll go forever.
11:29
And I really appreciate the phone call.
11:32
You're very welcome, Norman.
11:33
You have a good rest of the day.
11:34
My best to your wife.
11:35
Yeah, well, listen to you all the time.
11:39
You know, it's part of the process to maintain a car.
11:44
You've got to do it, right?
11:45
Maintenance is the key.
11:47
And if you don't maintain it, you know,
11:50
and it's a funny thing.
11:52
And I do this at the shop
11:53
and maybe I'm wrong for doing it.
11:55
But somebody will come in with their new car
11:56
and as we start to work on it
11:58
and the relationship evolves.
12:00
And, you know, we start to go through things
12:03
and, you know, they'll start to come in
12:04
the 15,000 mile service, the 30,000 mile service.
12:07
And we start to show them pieces and parts
12:08
that we've replaced and changed.
12:10
And I said, you got to remember,
12:11
buying a new car has now earned you the privilege
12:14
of throwing it away one piece at a time.
12:16
But it got you there.
12:20
It brought you to work.
12:21
It did what it was supposed to do.
12:22
And that's the purpose of an automobile.
12:25
Cars are a lifestyle.
12:26
How much lifestyle can you afford?
12:28
Ah, that's the secret.
12:29
And that's what you have to realize
12:30
as you approach it.
12:32
Can't be emotional when you're looking at a car.
12:33
It's got to be factual and affordable.
12:35
And that's the bottom line.
12:36
I'm Ron and Annie in the car doctor.
12:38
I'll be back right after this.
12:41
Lately, car buying has become a pretty dull experience.
12:44
But on eBay, behind every car and part
12:47
is a story waiting to be shared.
12:49
Like this guy I read about
12:51
who bought a 2020 Porsche Cayman GT4 on eBay.
12:57
I mean, there are plenty of Caymans
12:58
in great condition on eBay,
13:00
but this one needed some work.
13:03
That's just the start of the story.
13:04
So after this guy gets a great deal on his dream car,
13:07
he rebuilds the whole thing
13:09
with all these parts he found on eBay.
13:11
Performance brakes, suspension, body panels,
13:14
the works, guaranteed to fit.
13:17
Next thing you know, this nearly scrapped Cayman
13:20
was out there on the track as a full blown race car.
13:23
You're ready to go daily driver,
13:25
your next resto mod,
13:26
Hello Lotus Elon and the parts to finish it.
13:30
eBay has thousands of cars
13:32
and is the largest online selection
13:34
of vehicle parts and accessories.
13:36
eBay, things, people, love.
13:40
Gas prices, screen time, electric bills.
13:44
Some things are better lower, especially bad cholesterol.
13:48
Even if you're on statins, dieting and exercising,
13:51
you might need more to get to your goal.
13:53
That's where Lekvio can help.
13:56
Lekvio or Euclizarin is an injection given by a doctor
13:59
to help lower bad cholesterol,
14:01
along with diet and exercise.
14:03
Lekvio is the only bad cholesterol lowering medicine
14:06
that's two doses a year after two initial doses.
14:09
Do not use if you've had an allergic reaction to Lekvio
14:12
or any of its ingredients.
14:13
Common side effects were injection site reaction,
14:15
including pain, redness and rash,
14:17
joint pain and chest cold.
14:19
You've done your part.
14:20
Ask if Lekvio can take you further.
14:23
If your bad cholesterol is still high,
14:25
ask your doctor if just two doses of Lekvio a year
14:28
after two initial doses can help.
14:30
Learn more at Lekvio.com or call 1-833-537-8462.
14:37
That's L-E-Q-V-I-O.com.
14:42
And we're back listeners.
14:43
Ron and Amy and the car doctor here at your service.
14:45
Let's wander over and talk to Don in Virginia.
14:48
Don, welcome to the car doctor, sir.
14:52
You and I talked early in November.
14:55
2006 E-150 had gotten a whole plethora of codes thrown.
15:00
I had thrown some parts at it.
15:02
They all sort of revolved around the EGR system
15:04
and that type of thing.
15:06
I did end up replacing the ECM.
15:09
All of those codes went away for a while
15:11
and then right before we were going on vacation
15:13
with a couple of other couples,
15:15
I started getting a storm of just disparate codes.
15:19
And so I threw my hands up
15:21
and I told my wife,
15:22
I said, I'm just going to take it to the dealer, right?
15:24
And she said, oh my God, we're not going to be able to eat.
15:26
I said, well, we'll see.
15:28
So I took it to the dealer where I bought it.
15:30
I took it on a Sunday night
15:32
because I knew they weren't going to be there.
15:33
And I dropped it off,
15:34
let the foliage of what I'd done
15:36
and all the codes along with screenshots from the scan tool.
15:40
And they opened at 7.30 on Monday morning.
15:42
They call me about 9.30.
15:45
And I said, we know what the problem is.
15:47
And I said, really?
15:48
He said, yeah, we put a mechanic on there.
15:50
He's been here 30 years.
15:51
He's worked on lots of E-150 chateaus and everything else.
15:55
You got a wiring harness problem.
15:57
And apparently the wiring harness that wrapped itself
15:59
around the orifice tube that runs from the EGR valve
16:03
down to the exhaust.
16:04
And it wore through.
16:07
And so, you know, he said it's not going to be cheap.
16:11
He said it's a lot of time and hours.
16:12
So it was about an $850 repair,
16:14
but they went in, traced it out,
16:16
repaired it because you can't find a wiring harness
16:19
obviously for that.
16:22
Not a problem since then.
16:23
Went on a 2000 mile vacation.
16:25
No problem in the mountains.
16:30
So I guess the bulk of that is that
16:34
the lesson learned is that sometimes
16:35
when you weigh over your head,
16:37
you got to take it somewhere where there's experience
16:40
and they've worked on these things for a long time.
16:42
Well, there's that.
16:43
And there's also, you know,
16:44
you can't beat yourself up, right?
16:46
You don't know, all right?
16:48
You don't know if we're the wiring harness rubbed through.
16:53
If it short circuited,
16:55
because, you know, if it's rubbing against the metal tube,
16:57
it's ground, right?
16:59
You don't know what part of the harness.
17:00
You don't know if you damaged the PCM either, all right?
17:05
You know, I go back to the day,
17:07
I'll date myself here, 88 Chevrolet J body cars,
17:12
I think it was with the 2.8 liter,
17:15
the flat aluminum top intake manifold setup.
17:17
They would actually, the ignition coils
17:19
were mounted on top of the ignition module.
17:22
So the coil would spike, it would overload the module,
17:27
the module was tied by wiring back to the PCM.
17:30
So the coil would take out the module,
17:32
would take out the PCM,
17:33
you'd end up putting three parts in the car to fix it.
17:37
You know, everything is interconnected.
17:38
Heck, we had a couple of GMs back in the day.
17:42
I could tell you these stories with Fords too,
17:43
GMs are just on my mind today for some reason,
17:46
that, you know, you would have bad alternators
17:50
and a bad GM alternator on certain models
17:53
would actually overload the system
17:55
and damage any of the processors on the vehicle.
17:58
So you would put multiple parts.
17:59
It looked like you were guessing,
18:01
but in fact, you were just running down the problem.
18:05
So, you know, would it could or should it?
18:08
Do you still have the old PCM?
18:12
Okay, so guess what?
18:13
Now you got to back up, right?
18:15
You know, and I would hang on to that
18:18
because, you know, if you're planning on keeping this,
18:21
this was a camper or something, right?
18:24
Well, no, it was a E-150 Chateau.
18:27
So it was factory with captain's chairs.
18:30
It didn't have any modifications,
18:31
like a rebuilder or something like that.
18:34
So, you know, we've had it.
18:36
It's a little fancy.
18:37
It's not just a regular van is my-
18:42
Now you got to spare PCM.
18:44
I wouldn't be ashamed of that.
18:46
I wouldn't be ashamed of that at all.
18:48
One other quick question.
18:50
I've got to change the plugs on this.
18:53
They've plugs have about 120,000 on it.
18:55
And as part of all this stuff before,
18:57
I went in and changed the number five
18:59
because I was showing misfires.
19:01
The plug was not in great shape.
19:03
So my question is this,
19:04
and looking through Mitchell's and other places,
19:09
the response is you probably want to take the fuel rail
19:12
loose from the brackets
19:14
in order to be able to get the tools down in
19:16
to do the, to get the plugs out
19:18
because the fuel rails sit right on top of the fuel,
19:24
Is there anything I should be afraid of?
19:28
Is this a four, six or a five, four?
19:33
Two valve, two valve for a cylinder.
19:35
So I don't have to worry about the plugs being stuck.
19:38
No, I think you're going to find that,
19:40
I think you're going to find you're going to
19:41
loosen the rail and just kind of ease it out of the way.
19:44
Do you have a heated garage so it's warm?
19:48
Okay, so I would park it in there overnight,
19:50
get it good and warm and just take your time.
19:53
I would drop a little PB blaster down the hall
19:56
and just on the chance that the plugs are stuck
19:59
and just kind of work their way carefully.
20:01
And as long as you're doing plugs at this age
20:03
in mileage, you probably ought to consider-
20:05
You want to change the coils.
20:06
Yeah, change the coils.
20:09
And if we're going to do this,
20:11
let's do it once, let's get motorcraft stuff.
20:14
Let's just be done with it.
20:16
We don't want to go through this twice.
20:18
And obviously just-
20:19
Yeah, the issue is you change the four front ones
20:22
from the front of the car
20:23
and then you have to take the doghouse off
20:25
and change the four rear ones on your back.
20:30
Reaching out through, so.
20:31
Yeah, so listen, it might be easier,
20:33
depending upon how the chairs are constructed
20:37
it might be easier to take the chairs out.
20:39
because I've had those out before
20:41
to do some foam work on them.
20:43
So, you know, that might help you too.
20:46
Listen, I'm glad it worked out for you.
20:49
I appreciate you getting back to us.
20:53
You're very welcome.
20:54
I'm Ron and Annie in the car doctor.
20:55
We're back right after this.
20:58
Lately, car buying has become a pretty dull experience.
21:01
But on eBay, behind every car and part
21:04
is a story waiting to be shared.
21:07
Like this guy I read about
21:08
who bought a 2020 Porsche Cayman GT4 on eBay.
21:14
I mean, there are plenty of Caymans
21:15
in great condition on eBay,
21:17
but this one needed some work.
21:20
That's just the start of the story.
21:22
So after this guy gets a great deal on his dream car,
21:25
he rebuilds the whole thing
21:26
with all these parts he found on eBay.
21:29
Performance brakes, suspension, body panels,
21:31
the works, guaranteed to fit.
21:34
Next thing you know,
21:35
this nearly scrapped Cayman
21:37
was out there on the track as a full blown race car.
21:40
You're ready to go daily driver.
21:42
Your next rest-o-mod.
21:44
Hello Lotus Elon and the parts to finish it.
21:48

21:49

21:53

22:29
Welcome back listeners, Ron Nene and the car doctor.
22:31
Let's go down over,
22:32
let's go talk to Bill in Sussex County, New Jersey.
22:34
Bill, welcome to the car doctor, sir.
22:37
Hi Ron, thanks for taking the call.
22:38
You're a time listener from WTBQ.
22:42
Trying to help out my sister who lives in Chicago,
22:45
she sent me a picture of a tire from her Audi
22:49
that has some curb rash on it.
22:51
And basically there's a chunk or gouge
22:53
that's been taken out of the sidewall.
22:56
It's, if I had to guess,
22:57
it would probably be about an inch and a half long
23:00
and maybe a quarter of an inch deep.
23:02
So I told her to take it to the local tire shop
23:05
to get an evaluation.
23:07
They looked at it and their opinion was that
23:11
the tire did exactly what it was supposed to do.
23:15
That there's no steel belt showing
23:17
and that for the time being,
23:18
it was okay to leave it as it is.
23:23
I kind of err on the side of caution
23:25
and I think I know what the answer is
23:28
but I wanted to get your thoughts on it as well.
23:30
So good, and it's a good question
23:33
and I'm glad you called in.
23:36
That sidewall of the tire, this being an Audi,
23:39
this is probably what we call a low profile tire.
23:43
Yeah, it has a short height to the ground, so to speak.
23:46
Well, the tire shop is right.
23:48
The side casing of the tire did exactly its job.
23:51
It protected the tire in a sense
23:55
of something going through the steel belt,
23:56
which is now, even though it's not hanging out,
23:59
it's much more exposed than it normally would be.
24:03
This is the best example I can give everybody
24:04
to think about is you ever skin your elbow
24:07
and you don't bleed but you get that,
24:09
you take away the top layer of skin
24:10
and you get that tender portion of your skin underneath
24:13
and now it's a little, you know,
24:15
and it hurts a little bit when you rest on your elbow
24:17
and then all of a sudden you start bleeding
24:19
because you kind of poke through.
24:21
You know, she's taken away that outer layer.
24:24
So there's, if something were to,
24:27
and that's a pretty good gash, right,
24:28
that size that you had mentioned,
24:31
if something were to come up in the road,
24:34
now where's the side casing that's going to deflect?
24:38
And, you know, Bill, I always say
24:41
the road is a very unforgiving place.
24:44
You know, and especially in an Audi,
24:46
especially a low profile tire,
24:49
you know, I know it's gonna be a $200 tire
24:52
or a $250 tire but what's her life worth?
24:55
What's the car worth?
24:56
What's not getting stuck on the side of the road
24:58
or in an accident worth?
25:00
And I think I'd have to vote with you
25:03
because I know what you're thinking.
25:04
I'd put a tire on the car.
25:06
I wouldn't hesitate.
25:07
Especially if you're gonna be going on a long trip.
25:11
Oh, listen, and yes, but even if she was gonna just,
25:15
you know, I don't care if she's a three mile a day
25:17
commuter, you know, everybody says,
25:19
well, I only go three miles a day.
25:20
Just make the brakes work good enough.
25:23
You know, a little kid rolls out on a bicycle
25:26
right in front of you, two blocks from your house.
25:27
There's no saying where that accident's gonna happen.
25:31
And I think it's in her best interest.
25:34
You know, that tire, yes, if that tire was just used,
25:38
you know, does she make that tire the spare?
25:39
But then now she's got an unreliable spare in the car
25:42
and it probably wouldn't fit
25:43
because she probably has a space saver or some other,
25:46
depending upon the year Audi, some other low profile,
25:50
so to speak, or low use tire, you know,
25:53
there's so many ways they create spares today.
25:55
I think you go out and buy a spare.
25:58
And if it tore the chunk out,
26:00
depending upon how many miles are on it,
26:02
I'd probably shoot the alignment too.
26:05
I was thinking of that too.
26:06
And I did suggest to her that she should probably
26:08
buy two tires since that's an all wheel drive vehicle.
26:12
Right, well, now the question comes up, right?
26:15
And this is, I know where this is gonna go
26:17
because now the question comes up,
26:18
how much tread is left on the other tires?
26:21
So, you know, the industry says certain cars,
26:26
Subaru's are susceptible to it.
26:27
Certain models of Jeep are susceptible to it.
26:30
You know, Audi's seem to be a little less fussy,
26:33
but I don't wanna tempt the devil.
26:36
You know, if I'm looking at tread depth
26:38
and if the current tread depth on the car
26:41
is, you know, less than 530 seconds,
26:43
which is more than 50% worn,
26:46
and she's gonna put two fresh tires up front,
26:48
if she's gonna do some serious driving,
26:50
you know what, how old are the tires?
26:52
Are they, you know, four or five years old?
26:55
You know, those tires are gonna be date coated
26:57
in four or five years and they'll be out of the realm
26:59
in another two years,
27:01
where you're not supposed to be riding on them.
27:02
So, again, what's the value of her safety
27:06
at high speed, all kinds of weather?
27:08
Nothing handles like a fresh set of tires.
27:10
And I think it just kind of goes with the territory
27:13
of what she's driving.
27:15
All right, that's great advice, I appreciate it.
27:17
You know, I can't say it any other way.
27:21
The biggest concern I have is, you know,
27:24
here, I'll tell you the story this way.
27:25
We had a Jeep in the shop just recently
27:28
and the new customer and where he was going,
27:32
they'd been doing all his service work
27:34
and all the lug nuts were swollen.
27:37
Now, Jeeps have a problem that the lug nut is capped,
27:41
so there's a hard steel body
27:43
underneath this tinny aluminum cap.
27:46
And if you constantly air gun them on and off,
27:48
impact hammer them on and off,
27:50
eventually those lug nuts will start to splinter
27:54
and shred and then moisture gets in
27:57
and now the moisture turns into rust and there's a bulge
28:00
and now you can't fit the 19 millimeter socket on it.
28:03
You have to have a 19 and a half or some other
28:05
odd ball size in order to get the lug nuts off.
28:08
So, you know, Rich brought it in,
28:09
we got all the lug nuts off,
28:10
but in looking at the wheels,
28:13
the wheels on this Jeep,
28:14
you could see that they were getting beat up
28:17
and when we talked about it,
28:18
it's partially it's the last shop,
28:21
they were kind of animals for lack of a way to say it,
28:23
but it was kind of interesting to see
28:25
just how these wheels themselves had picked up debris
28:28
and there's a lot of junk on the road.
28:31
And, you know, it catches your eye
28:33
and you have to realize you may not hear it,
28:36
but to have an exposed wound in that tire,
28:38
I looked at Rich's wheels on his Jeep
28:40
and we did get the lug nuts off, by the way,
28:41
it took a little bit of persuasion.
28:44
Someday I'll tell you guys a story
28:45
about how we had to get out
28:46
the three quarter inch breaker bar
28:47
that's two feet long
28:48
and literally stand on it
28:49
to break some of the lug nuts loose.
28:50
They were so over tightened.
28:53
It's what's the safety?
28:55
I've never met anybody standing on the side of the road
28:58
with a flat that they knew was marginal going,
29:04
boy, I'm so glad I saved money
29:05
that I could get stuck here and, you know,
29:07
wait for the tow truck.
29:09
It just doesn't work like that.
29:10
So by all means, get her eight tire, two tires,
29:14
four tires, you know what,
29:16
take it as a warning sign and do an alignment
29:18
and then you drive in peace and quiet
29:19
and the knowledge of safety, right?
29:23
And I'm happy that tire buying is easier
29:25
than picking out oil
29:26
or getting a 40 watt light bulb
29:28
in the local hardware store.
29:29
That's right, absolutely, absolutely, Bill.
29:33
So, all right, sir, you be well.
29:34
Happy new year, happy and healthy new year to everyone.
29:37
And thanks for being part of the car doctor family.

Welcome back listeners, Ron and Amy in the car doctor.
31:48
Let's get back to the phones.
31:49
Let's go over to Jerry out there.
31:51
And I think it's, is it Las Vegas Jerry
31:53
or what part of Nevada are you from?
31:55
No, I'm retired in Las Vegas.
31:57
I'm from the East Coast originally born in New York.
32:01
But yeah, I'm retired.
32:02
Gotcha, good for you.
32:03
So what's going on?
32:05
Well, a couple of quick things.
32:07
Number one, I'm 65, graduated high school in 76
32:11
and I've always worked on my own cars, basic stuff.
32:14
Changing oil and everything.
32:15
And I've always kept vehicles 10 plus years.
32:18
Well, in 2021, I basically went to the Ram dealer
32:23
and built my dream truck because this Gentry Eco diesel
32:27
had great reviews and looked good.
32:29
And I wanted a diesel for the fuel economy and towing my RV.
32:34
Received the truck in March, 2022.
32:36
All was good at first.
32:38
And then all of a sudden when diesel was a buck 50 more
32:43
than gas, I took my old Nissan pickup truck,
32:46
it went cross country, came back a month later.
32:49
So the diesel sat for a month.
32:51
All of a sudden, bang, bang, bang.
32:53
Engine codes, engine codes, wrong, wrong, wrong.
32:56
Dealer for weeks at a time because they're
32:58
short diesel technicians.
33:00
EGR went out, turbo problems, an absolute nightmare
33:06
and especially sitting for months and months and months.
33:09
I've got the bills in front of me, obviously.
33:11
I didn't pay them because it's under warranty,
33:13
but it's over $11,000 in pairs.
33:16
What that tells me is not only do they not have any diesel
33:19
text, the texts that are working on it are clueless,
33:21
but I guess it's easy to criticize from my seat here.
33:24
It's in the safety of the studio.
33:26
But I got to tell you, you hang one part,
33:29
two parts as an educated guess.
33:31
After that, it's time to call in the zone rep
33:33
and start talking to somebody and saying,
33:35
hey, what's going on? Where are we going with this?
33:37
That was probably, I'm going to guess, Jerry,
33:43
Okay. All right. Still a lot of money.
33:45
Yeah, a lot of money and I paid cash for it
33:49
because I'm retired and I'm saved my money.
33:53
So I was going on a trip to meet an old
33:55
Marine Corps buddy I hadn't seen in years
33:57
and all of a sudden the whole
33:59
emission system went crap again.
34:03
So I wrote a personal letter to
34:09
So I went and I got one of these
34:11
lemon law lawyers online.
34:13
And they said, oh, you got a great case.
34:15
You got a great case. You got a great case.
34:17
Well, let me tell you, the lemon law lawyer guys,
34:19
especially some of these guys online,
34:21
are a total rip off themselves.
34:23
And I can get into that if you want.
34:25
But long story short,
34:27
every time I brought it back with something wrong.
34:29
So Thanksgiving weekend,
34:35
and I just traded it in and I took a beating
34:37
and I got a Toyota.
34:39
So I got a 2023 Toyota.
34:45
and when the Ram ran
34:47
really nice, it ran fantastic.
34:49
But I don't know if you've
34:51
had experience with these eco-diesels,
34:53
but I've heard other
34:55
guys who had these disaster stories
34:57
with the turbos and the emissions and everything.
34:59
Yeah, I'm not a fan of diesel
35:01
in general in that application
35:03
for a lot of reasons.
35:05
Number one, Chrysler's involved
35:07
and, you know, the older ones,
35:09
when it was the Cummins
35:11
back in, you know, the older,
35:13
what was it, the 03's
35:15
or the 98's going way back,
35:17
that seemed to be a better diesel.
35:19
The newer one, the more electronics they hang on it,
35:21
it seems like the more difficult
35:25
maintain it and get some kind of decent power
35:27
out of it and there's a lot of limitations.
35:29
But that be said, you know,
35:31
we still work on them, we still see them,
35:33
they're just not my favorite in the whole world.
35:35
I still think what happened with you is
35:37
and, you know, let me point out
35:39
the next time if you decide to take the plunge again,
35:41
I don't think you will, but just in case,
35:43
you know, the question I always ask,
35:45
when I'm buying something weird,
35:47
I want to know who's going to work on it.
35:49
Hey, do you have a tech trained in this?
35:51
And surprisingly, I'm surprised the dealership
35:53
was able to sell it to you
35:55
and not have a certified tech.
35:57
You know, the way General Motors works, for example,
35:59
is the Corvette tech on hand
36:01
before they can sell a Corvette.
36:03
If they don't have a guy that can fix it,
36:05
they can't sell it.
36:07
And I believe the other car companies do the same thing.
36:09
So I'm not sure where the bump in the road
36:11
became in that you couldn't get this solved.
36:13
And I guess it's just a reflection on the dealer
36:15
really, because if they wanted to fix it, they could.
36:17
You know, there is a culture
36:19
when you buy a vehicle,
36:21
Jerry, and I think you know that now
36:23
in terms of, you know,
36:25
you just got an example of how Chrysler
36:27
and Fiat, whoever they are,
36:29
you know, handles customer service
36:31
and handles problems like that.
36:33
You'll be happy with the Toyota.
36:35
I can tell you that.
36:37
It's a different culture, right?
36:39
It was very different, the different buying experience.
36:43
And I'm going to tell you, I wanted the 2023
36:45
because I'm tired, because this year
36:47
they're going to turbos and everything.
36:49
I'm sick of turbos.
36:51
I'm sick of too much junk on there.
36:53
I wanted naturally aspirated,
36:55
you know, basic stuff that I could work on.
36:57
Yep, yep, yep, yep.
37:01
And let me, can I make a quick comment
37:03
about these lemon lawyer guys for guys on the year
37:05
if they ever choose to go to one?
37:07
In the fine print, you know, you think you
37:09
sign on with a lawyer because the lawyer
37:11
is going to look after you.
37:13
He's going to be on your side.
37:15
Well, in the fine print of what I signed,
37:17
it said, if you receive
37:19
an offer from Fiat Chrysler
37:21
and you do not accept it,
37:23
you have to pay the lawyer fees.
37:25
Well, I'm thinking fine, okay, you know,
37:27
get it and get an offer.
37:29
Well, I think these guys work with them.
37:31
Fiat Chrysler came back with this low ball
37:33
offer and I went to the lawyer and
37:35
like, I'm not taking this, let's go to court.
37:37
He goes, well, we're not sure, blah, blah, blah.
37:39
And they started dancing around.
37:41
So all of a sudden it became,
37:43
you're at fault and what did you do wrong?
37:45
Yep, I get it, Jerry, I really do.
37:47
Hey Jerry, sit tight, stay on the line.
37:49
Let me up, pull over, take a pause for the cause
37:51
and I'm Ron Anani and the car doctor will be back
37:55
Lately, car buying has become
37:57
a pretty dull experience.
37:59
But on eBay, behind every car and part
38:01
is a story waiting to be shared.
38:03
Like this guy I read about
38:05
who bought a 2020 Porsche Cayman
38:11
I mean, there are plenty of Caymans
38:13
in great condition on eBay,
38:15
but this one needed some work.
38:17
That's just the start of the story.
38:19
After this guy gets a great deal on his dream car,
38:21
he rebuilds the whole thing
38:23
with all these parts he found on eBay.
38:25
Performance brakes, suspension,
38:27
body panels, the works.
38:31
Next thing you know, this nearly
38:33
scrapped Cayman was out there on the track
38:35
as a full blown race car.
38:37
You're ready to go daily driver,
38:39
your next resto mod,
38:43
and the parts to finish it.
38:45
eBay has thousands of cars
38:47
with the latest online selection
38:49
of vehicle parts and accessories.
38:51
eBay. Things. People. Love.
38:59
Some things are better, lower,
39:01
especially bad cholesterol.
39:03
Even if you're on statins,
39:05
dieting, and exercising,
39:07
you might need more to get to your goal.
39:09
That's where LECVO can help.
39:11
LECVO, or Euclizarin,
39:13
is an injection given by a doctor
39:15
along with diet and exercise.
39:17
LECVO is the only bad cholesterol
39:19
lowering medicine that's two doses
39:21
a year after two initial doses.
39:23
Do not use if you've had an allergic reaction
39:25
to LECVO or any of its ingredients.
39:27
Common side effects were injection site reaction,
39:29
including pain, redness, and rash,
39:31
joint pain, and chest cold.
39:33
You've done your part. Ask if LECVO
39:35
can take you further.
39:37
If your bad cholesterol is still high,
39:39
ask your doctor if just two doses
39:41
of LECVO a year after two initial

Welcome back, listeners.
41:40
We're kind of winding down the hour here.
41:42
Jerry from Las Vegas, you're still there?
41:45
So I'm sorry, Jerry, I mean to cut you off.
41:47
Tell us some, you know, give you a little bit
41:49
of on-air therapy here.
41:51
So the lemon law lawyers aren't exactly
41:53
all they're cracked up to be. Fair statement.
41:55
Exactly, and it's state by state.
41:57
You got to look at your state.
41:59
Some states are stronger than others.
42:01
Nevada's in between, but you really got
42:03
to read the fine print with these guys.
42:05
They don't put the screws to you if they get the chance.
42:07
Right, right, right, right.
42:09
Well, Jerry, listen, I appreciate you calling in.
42:11
My spies tell me that you are...
42:13
Is it... How do you say it when you're no longer
42:16
in the Marine Corps active duty?
42:18
Are you a retired Marine? You're not an ex-Marine.
42:20
There's no such thing as an ex-Marine, right?
42:22
Well, I did 30 years, so I'm a retired Marine.
42:27
It lets me sit on my butt, but can I do a quick shout out?
42:30
Because my local garage guy is exactly like you.
42:33
It's Dad's garage on North Rancho in Las Vegas.
42:37
He works the same way you do.
42:38
Absolutely. Jerry, it's been a pleasure, sir.
42:40
And thank you for your service.
42:42
No, thanks. Love the show. You take care.
42:44
You take good care. I'm Ron Anani in the car doctor.
42:47
You know, and poor Jerry, right?
42:50
He ended up, you know, going in and...
42:55
I wish I had found him sooner in that, you know,
42:59
I could have helped him.
43:01
You know, maybe we could have diagnosed it together.
43:03
Part of the problem is, all right, you know,
43:05
you go into a dealership under warranty.
43:08
Warranty doesn't mean it's getting fixed.
43:11
It just means that it's going to be looked at for free, all right?
43:15
And I still stand on the premise of my saying that I've said
43:19
over the years that a repair shop is only as good as the people
43:22
in it. The sign on the door doesn't mean anything.
43:25
And, you know, when you're buying...
43:28
When you're buying a four-cylinder Toyota Camry,
43:30
it's a pretty safe bet they've got a guy that can work on that.
43:32
But if you're buying an eco-diesel from your Ram dealership,
43:35
you're buying a Corvette from your Chevrolet dealership,
43:37
or, you know, back in the day, you're buying something.
43:40
Do you have a guy that can fix this? Is he any good?
43:43
How old is he? Is he going to retire in the next two weeks?
43:45
You know, these are all great questions,
43:47
all things you want to know,
43:49
because it's all going to come down to sooner or later
43:51
that vehicle is going to have to get serviced
43:53
and you're going to need that person in order to properly,
43:56
you know, enjoy and get a life cycle out of it
43:58
if the dealer is your guy,
43:59
if the dealer is going to be the one to work on it.
44:01
And, you know, unfortunately, Jerry had a bad run of luck,
44:04
but he'll like that Toyota.
44:05
And I get what he's saying.
44:07
He's talking about his new Toyota.
44:08
He wanted a 23 because in 24,
44:10
Toyota also is going to all turbochargers
44:13
or a lot of turbochargers.
44:14
And, you know, I question that as well.
44:16
I'm not a big turbocharger fan.
44:18
I think it's some extra work
44:19
where you don't necessarily need it all the time.
44:23
Turbocharger technology has come a long way
44:24
and we'll have to learn to embrace it.
44:26
Hey, that's about it for now.
