This is an iHeart podcast.
00:04
The worst part about loving cars might just be buying them and all the parts.
00:08
But on eBay, behind every car and part is a story waiting to be shared.
00:12
I read about this guy who bought a 2020 Porsche Cayman that was well-loved.
00:16
I mean, there are plenty of Caymans in great condition on eBay, but this one needed some work.
00:20
This guy buys it and rebuilds the whole thing all with parts he found on eBay,
00:24
and now that nearly-scrapped Cayman is out tearing up the track.
00:27
From Toyota's to Aston Martin's, eBay has thousands of cars
00:30
and the largest online selection of vehicle parts and accessories.
00:33
eBay, things, people, love.
00:36
Gas prices, screen time, electric bills.
00:39
Some things are better, lower, especially bad cholesterol.
00:43
Even if you're on statins, dieting, and exercising,
00:47
you might need more to get to your goal.
00:49
That's where LekVio can help.
00:51
LekVio, or Inclisterin, is an injection given by a doctor
00:55
to help lower bad cholesterol along with diet and exercise.
00:59
LekVio is the only bad cholesterol-lowering medicine
01:02
that's two doses a year after two initial doses.
01:05
Do not use if you've had an allergic reaction to LekVio or any of its ingredients.
01:08
Common side effects were injection site reaction,
01:11
including pain, redness, and rash, joint pain, and chest cold.
01:15
You've done your part.
01:16
Ask if LekVio can take you further.
01:18
If your bad cholesterol is still high,
01:21
ask your doctor if just two doses of LekVio a year
01:24
after two initial doses can help.

02:26
How good is your relationship with your mechanic,
02:30
or a mechanic, any mechanic?
02:34
I've been pondering this one for a couple of days now.
02:36
It's a real story from the shop this week.
02:40
An individual walked into the shop about 3 o'clock Thursday
02:43
afternoon, Wednesday afternoon.
02:46
I've got a check engine light on.
02:47
Can you diagnose my check engine light?
02:49
And that's the way the conversation started.
02:52
And not a face I recognized.
02:56
Definitely not a car I recognized.
02:58
06 Acura, 113,000 miles on it.
03:01
And the deeper the conversation got, the more I realized
03:05
it was a mechanical total.
03:08
And I'll tell you why.
03:11
It was the approach.
03:12
It was what's been going on with this vehicle.
03:15
Because I always, when you come in and ask me,
03:17
can I fix a car, my answer is, of course.
03:20
But I have questions for you.
03:22
And that's my job is what I'm about to become
03:25
your mechanic on the case.
03:27
And I said, how long is the check engine light been on?
03:30
It's been on for a while, a couple of years.
03:33
And my second question is always,
03:36
who's tried to work on it?
03:38
And she said a couple of shops.
03:39
And most recently, her son-in-law.
03:42
And the son-in-law had changed a bunch of ignition parts.
03:46
So I said, so this is a misfire problem?
03:49
To which she replied, well, it's a cylinder problem.
03:51
I said, right, it's a misfire problem.
03:53
She goes, yeah, that sounds right.
03:55
And her son-in-law had changed a bunch of parts.
03:58
And I said, ignition, she said, yes, she verified that.
04:01
And I said, injectors, she said, sounds right.
04:05
And she said, the problem goes away every once in a while.
04:07
And then it comes back.
04:08
And so again, she asked, can you fix that?
04:13
I said, sure, I can diagnose it, I can fix it.
04:15
My question to you is, are you ready for that?
04:18
Are you ready to have me go the distance?
04:19
Are you ready to have someone apply some diagnostics
04:25
to this vehicle and fix it?
04:28
Are you ready to go the distance?
04:30
I always think about that movie, The Untouchables, right?
04:32
Remember the Untouchables, Sean Connery,
04:34
when Kevin Costner comes to him.
04:37
And Sean Connery initially turns him down
04:39
to work with the Untouchables, right,
04:41
to do what he has to do.
04:47
And then Connery takes Kevin Costner to the church
04:51
and he turns to him and he says,
04:52
they're having their conversation.
04:53
He says, are you ready to do what needs to be done?
04:55
Are you ready to go all the way?
04:57
And that's really how you have to look at diagnostics.
04:59
After a couple of years, after a couple of repair attempts,
05:04
you've got to ask yourself, are you ready to go all the way?
05:06
Are you just poking and hoping?
05:09
And I told her point blank,
05:10
within the first two minutes of our conversation,
05:12
I said, listen, diagnostics starts at $275.
05:16
And I realized we're not supposed to talk about money
05:17
here on radio and I get that, but you know what we're gonna.
05:21
And that $275 gets us in the door for about an hour
05:26
and a half of some preliminary testing,
05:29
maybe some involved testing telling us which way to go.
05:32
Because understand, while a diagnostic routine
05:35
has a set pattern of issues and tests to be performed,
05:39
every diagnosis is not necessarily the same.
05:42
And there are varying branches that you have to go down
05:45
to get to a diagnostic conclusion.
05:48
And I said that $275 may include,
05:51
gee, we've gotta replace all the parts that you put in it
05:53
because they're of substandard quality.
05:55
It may include we have to take those out,
05:57
examine them, change something, alter something,
06:00
correct something, adjust something that was put in
06:03
because it was done of a substandard quality
06:05
because all of those repair attempts
06:08
and all of those alleged diagnostics led to nothing
06:11
because it's still broken.
06:14
And she said, but why is it so expensive?
06:18
And I said, have the previous three or four repair attempts
06:21
has the money you've spent up to this point
06:23
yielded any results?
06:26
And I said, that's why it's expensive to you
06:28
because you don't recognize the value
06:32
of a concerted effort of a diagnostic routine,
06:37
I think some of you get stuck into a rut.
06:42
I don't think you see the forest for the trees.
06:44
I don't think you see what you're asking of the mechanic.
06:48
There's a reason why some cars never get fixed
06:51
because you have to ask yourself,
06:52
are you ready to go the distance?
06:54
Are you ready to put in everything
06:55
that that vehicle needs?
06:56
And if not, as I told her,
06:59
this vehicle is mechanically totaled.
07:02
Unless somebody hits upon just that right combination
07:05
by some dumb luck effort, that vehicle will not get fixed
07:10
because there's not much left.
07:11
If we make an assumption, which is a dangerous thing
07:13
and diagnostics in any other situation,
07:15
if we make an assumption that it's not ignition
07:19
and it's not an injector,
07:21
there's really only three things it can be.
07:25
An engine problem, a computer problem
07:27
or a wiring harness issue.
07:31
For a random misfire, for setting a misfire
07:33
on cylinder three, because there's no rule
07:37
that says it's ignition,
07:38
there's no rule that says it's fuel.
07:40
It's a misfire, it's a stutter.
07:43
If it was skipping, it misses a step.
07:47
I think she got it.
07:49
I don't think she's gonna get it fixed
07:50
and I'm sure she's still looking.
07:53
But my point is, what's your approach?
07:55
Do you ever think about that approach?
07:57
And for that matter, and I always come back to this,
08:00
I've said for the longest time,
08:02
if you're over 21 and you've been driving a car,
08:05
who is your regular mechanic?
08:06
Who's the doctor in attendance?
08:07
Who's the person that you trust
08:09
to take care of that vehicle on a regular basis?
08:12
And if you're constantly changing mechanics,
08:15
maybe it's you, are you looking for the right thing?
08:18
There are some people I just,
08:20
I listen to how people think when I'm in group gatherings
08:23
and nobody knows, I have an anonymity,
08:25
nobody knows who I am or what I do.
08:27
And I try to tell anybody what I do
08:28
because it's interesting to hear the other side,
08:31
how mechanics are crooks, how the industry is slanted,
08:34
how nobody can get their car fixed,
08:36
how everything is so expensive.
08:39
But people will keep throwing money down the well
08:43
into that same hall without any sequential,
08:47
logical, common sense sequence of repair or approach.
08:54
Change your thinking, change how you do it,
08:56
change what you do.
08:59
I encourage you to sit down and talk to a mechanic
09:01
and say, hey, what will this get me?
09:03
No, I realize, look, I'll be the first to admit it.
09:05
There was a bunch of dopes in my industry.
09:09
Some of the dumbest people I know
09:10
turn screwdrivers all day long.
09:14
You know, I talk to training directors
09:17
and some of the training people
09:19
that put together classes from around the country.
09:23
And we talk about different places.
09:24
And he said, Ron, some of these guys
09:26
are as dumb as a bunch of rocks.
09:28
They're still banging on hammers, trying to fix cars.
09:30
And it doesn't work.
09:33
So part of that's your fault though,
09:35
because part of that is you've got to demand better.
09:37
You've got to go find that shop and support that shop
09:39
and not the guy who's doing it cheaper
09:41
because that's what you want to hear.
09:45
I wonder if that accurate can be fixed.
09:47
Personally, I think it's got a bad cylinder head.
09:50
Personally, I think the exhaust valve
09:52
is loosened the seat on number three.
09:53
And that was just from her description.
09:55
But do I tell her that?
09:57
Was I obligated to tell her that standing at the counter
09:59
without any proof of diagnostic tests to back it up?
10:06
I just know that some people are going to spin
10:08
and they're going to go around in circles.
10:09
And that's what she's going to do.
10:10
And I don't want to see that happen to you.
10:12
I want to see you get your car fixed.
10:14
I want to see you start to make the approach of
10:17
what does it take to keep this car in good running order?
10:21
Amanda is a driver for one of our local parts houses.
10:25
She's a young single mom.
10:26
She's working hard.
10:27
She delivers parts and somehow this week,
10:31
she figured out who we are and what we do.
10:35
She told me this weekend, she must be right.
10:38
She said, you're famous.
10:40
I said, how can you say that?
10:41
She says, well, you're on the radio.
10:43
You have a podcast.
10:43
You do this, you do that.
10:45
I said, yeah, I got three affiliates.
10:48
And she started listening to the show.
10:50
She came in two days later.
10:52
She said, I've got to tell you,
10:53
I listened to a couple of episodes.
10:55
You've changed how I've looked at my car
10:59
and you've made me change and made me think about
11:02
how I want to get my car repaired.
11:04
I used to hate my car.
11:07
but I don't think so much of my car anymore
11:09
is just it's transportation
11:10
and that's all it's supposed to be to keep me safe
11:13
and get me back and forth to work.
11:15
And that I shouldn't get a car beyond my lifestyle.
11:18
She said, you really made me think about it.
11:22
That's part of what I'm supposed to do.
11:24
And that's the fact that I did that with Amanda
11:26
is why I'm doing the opening conversation today about,
11:30
you know, do you approach your mechanic the right way?
11:32
I'm trying to get everybody to think here.
11:34
You know, it's that opening comments.
11:36
It's that first date that decides
11:39
how long the relationship is going to go on for
11:41
and will everyone benefit from it?
11:47
I'm Ron Naney in the car doctor.
11:48
I'll be back right after this.
11:51
Lately, car buying has become a pretty dull experience.
11:54
But on eBay, behind every car and part
11:57
is a story waiting to be shared.
12:00
Like this guy I read about who bought a 2020 Porsche Cayman GT4
12:07
I mean, there are plenty of Caymans
12:08
in great condition on eBay,
12:10
but this one needed some work.
12:13
That's just the start of the story.
12:15
So after this guy gets a great deal on his dream car,
12:18
he rebuilds the whole thing with all these parts
12:22
Performance brakes, suspension, body panels, the works.
12:28
Next thing you know, this nearly scrapped Cayman
12:30
was out there on the track as a full blown race car.
12:34
You're ready to go daily driver, your next resto mod.
12:37
Hello, Lotus Elon, and the parts to finish it.
12:41
eBay has thousands of cars
12:43
and is the largest online selection
12:44
of vehicle parts and accessories.
12:46
eBay, things, people, love.
12:51
Have heart disease and diet and exercise
12:53
are not enough to lower bad cholesterol?
12:55
Ask your doctor if Lekveo and glycerin can help.
12:58
Prescription Lekveo is the only
13:00
bad cholesterol lowering medication
13:02
that's two doses a year after two initial doses.
13:05
Do not use if you've had an allergic reaction
13:07
to Lekveo or any of its ingredients.
13:09
Common side effects were injection site reaction,
13:12
including pain, redness and rash,
13:13
joint pain and chest cold.
13:15
Call 1-833-537-8462 or visit Lekveo.com.
13:23
Hey, before we go to the phones,
13:24
I have a question for Tom.
13:26
Tom, you realize that we are one week away
13:33
So for the next seven days, the giants are super,
13:37
the giants are Super Bowl contenders
13:41
and it could change at the moment of kickoff.
13:43
Oh, it'll change before the moment of kickoff.
13:46
You know that, we do this every year.
13:48
Every year we go through this.
13:49
Now, their first four games
13:51
are with all first place teams, right?
13:54
So they have to win,
13:56
I just wanna put it here on public record,
13:57
they have to win the first,
13:59
they have to win at least two of the four.
14:02
Okay, so you heard it here first,
14:05
I'm not being negative,
14:06
but what are the odds that they lose three quarterbacks
14:10
in the first four games
14:12
and they lose all four games?
14:14
Yeah, that's entirely possible.
14:16
However, my son and I did go to the pre-season game
14:19
and they looked pretty good all pre-season.
14:21
Now granted, that's pre-season.
14:23
But all three strings for a second and third string,
14:27
all looked pretty good.
14:28
My son's Jets, however.
14:29
Well, we won't talk about that.
14:31
We won't talk about that, so.
14:32
But I just, listen, I wish us the best,
14:35
I hope for the best.
14:38
I tried it on ChatGPT, by the way.
14:40
I went to AI and I asked it,
14:41
what will the Giants record be this year?
14:44
ChatGPT is predicting six and 11,
14:46
so we'll see how smart artificial intelligence really is.
14:49
You mean ChatGPT actually didn't overload the computer
14:51
and drop it offline?
14:52
No, and he didn't say anything really bad,
14:55
but he kind of agreed with me
14:57
that they've got to win the first two of four,
14:58
so I'm basing what I'm saying
15:00
on some sort of computer calculation.
15:03
But anyway, that's the last we'll talk about it
15:06
until next week, all right, I promise.
15:08
So let's go talk to Micah in Maine.
15:10
Micah, my main man, what's going on, brother?
15:13
Well, first I needed to wish you a belated birthday,
15:16
happy birthday, because I missed it this year,
15:19
I was kind of busy with other things,
15:20
and usually I send you a card,
15:22
but we were born within seven days of one another,
15:25
right to the same year, and I-
15:26
And back at you, brother, but yes, thank you very much.
15:30
So what's going on?
15:31
But I'm calling about really what your monologue was about,
15:34
and it's about developing relationship
15:36
and trusting the people that work on your car.
15:38
I got a 2015 Subaru Legacy that I keep in great shape,
15:42
and I always maintain it, and my dealership knows that,
15:45
and I've got a great relationship with a dealership.
15:47
When I go down there for my regular service,
15:49
usually I'll bring cookies or cupcakes or something.
15:52
In fact, we celebrated 10-year-old,
15:54
my 10-year anniversary of buying the car from them,
15:56
and I brought them three dozen cupcakes
15:58
to celebrate with the whole crew
15:59
for maintaining it as well as they did.
16:01
Now, let me ask you something, Micah,
16:03
why do you look at it like that?
16:05
See, you're different than a lot of people.
16:07
A lot of people look at a repair shop
16:09
as an adversarial situation, but yet you embrace it.
16:13
Was it something in your family upbringing?
16:15
Was your dad a mechanic?
16:18
No, but my dad treated people with respect for what they did,
16:22
and he always knew, and my dad was a psychologist.
16:25
That may say something about it, too,
16:27
but he knew that you treat people for who they are,
16:30
and you expect people to be who they are,
16:32
and that's all you can expect from people.
16:34
And the people that I work with,
16:36
whether they're doctors, whether they're lawyers,
16:38
whether they're mechanics, whatever,
16:39
I respect them for the work that they do,
16:41
and if they're working for me,
16:43
they're doing their best to take care of me,
16:44
or at least I hope they're doing their best to take care of me,
16:47
and I need to trust them just like I want them to trust me,
16:50
and I want to let them know
16:52
that I appreciate what they're doing for me,
16:54
and it's not that I expect something back and forth
16:57
from them, I'm not doing this
16:58
because I expect something better from them,
17:01
but they know that I appreciate them.
17:03
I know that they appreciate me as a customer.
17:06
They know that I maintain my car,
17:07
and therefore they treat me,
17:09
I don't know, with more respect,
17:11
but they know that there is the respect
17:13
that I have for my vehicle and for what they do,
17:15
so they do what they can for me
17:16
just like I do what I can for them.
17:18
True or false statement, Micah,
17:19
you're counting on them to solve your problem
17:22
if and when you have one,
17:23
and that's a luxury that you treat yourself to.
17:27
Absolutely is, and I had a problem,
17:29
and I had a major problem.
17:31
There was a mistake that was made,
17:33
and it's not the question that a mistake is made,
17:35
it's how do you solve the problem?
17:39
My brakes were making all sorts of noise.
17:40
I was getting that grunting sound
17:42
right when you come to the full stop,
17:43
and I knew that I was due for brakes,
17:45
or I was coming close to being due for brakes,
17:47
I was told me, told that, I don't know,
17:49
six months ago, they said,
17:50
you don't need it now,
17:51
we're gonna keep an eye on it,
17:52
but we're coming close,
17:53
and I maintain the car regularly,
17:55
so I trust them to tell me.
17:56
So I was making this noise,
17:57
I said, well, now's the time,
17:59
I made an appointment to get my brakes taken care of,
18:02
and I made the appointment on a Thursday,
18:03
I brought the car down,
18:05
they offered me a loaner,
18:06
and they called me about two hours later
18:09
and said, Micah, I know you use something
18:10
to take care of the rust,
18:12
and I do, I use Rust Check,
18:13
which is a great product.
18:15
It's the number one rust control organization in Canada,
18:18
I've been using it for four or five years.
18:20
They said, there's this goo all over the brakes
18:22
and all over the struts that's run down,
18:24
and we're pretty sure that's what it is,
18:25
and we can't work on the brakes,
18:27
and you should probably get in touch with Rust Check.
18:30
So I did, and I've been using them for a while
18:32
and I know the owner and I know the manager,
18:34
called them right away,
18:35
it's about eight o'clock in the morning,
18:37
and the manager said, well, the owner's not here,
18:40
let me give him a call,
18:41
and 10 minutes later, the owner called me at home,
18:43
and he said, I'm going right down to the dealership,
18:45
but let me take a look at it,
18:47
and he went down to the dealership,
18:49
and he looked at it,
18:50
and in the next minute, I'm getting a call,
18:51
because I know the service writers,
18:53
but I also know the service director,
18:55
and the service director calls me and says,
18:57
Mike, I've got the owner of Rust Check here,
19:00
he wants to take the car,
19:02
is it okay for me to give it to him to clean up?
19:03
Do you want him to clean it up?
19:05
And I said, Paul, it's a name of the service director,
19:08
do you want to clean it up,
19:09
or should I have him do it?
19:10
He says, I think you should have him do it,
19:12
but I just want permission for him
19:13
to be able to take the car from me.
19:15
I said, fine, he took the car back to his shop,
19:18
cleaned it up within an hour,
19:19
had it back at my Subaru dealership,
19:22
everything was taken care of,
19:23
and we needed the brakes,
19:24
and we did the brakes anyway.
19:26
And that's the moral there, right?
19:27
That there's always a solution to the problem,
19:29
it's how you approach it.
19:31
Exactly, and I told when I called,
19:34
when I spoke with the owner of Rust Check,
19:35
I said, look, I'm not angry at you,
19:37
these things happen,
19:38
must have been some kind of overspray,
19:42
He said, he understood that,
19:44
he knew I wasn't yelling at him,
19:45
I just wanted to get the problem resolved,
19:47
and he took care of it right away,
19:48
and I'm gonna go back to him next year,
19:50
when it's time to do the undercoding again.
19:52
You know where else that problem occurs, Micah,
19:54
and then I'll let you go is,
19:56
you take your car of a car wash,
19:57
and I'm not saying all car washes are like this,
19:59
but we've seen cases where people go to a car wash,
20:02
and they, what do you do?
20:04
You go through, you get the A platinum service,
20:06
you roll through the line, they wash the car,
20:08
they clean everything,
20:09
and then when they come out,
20:10
they do tire shine on the outside of the tires.
20:13
If they're aggressive,
20:15
and they put too much tire shine on,
20:16
well, incorrect tire shine or too much tire shine,
20:19
we've got cases of it where it's documented,
20:21
it will actually cause wear,
20:23
degradation of the tire itself,
20:25
but if it gets on the brake assemblies,
20:27
it will cause a similar problem to that,
20:29
so you always have to be aware of that.
20:30
Always a pleasure to talk to you, Micah,
20:32
you keep them coming,
20:33
and you be safe up there in Maine.
20:35
Micah, my main man, I love that.
20:37
I'm Ron Aine in the car doctor,
20:38
I'll be back right after this, don't go away.
20:41
Lately, car buying has become a pretty dull experience,
20:45
but on eBay, behind every car and part
20:47
is a story waiting to be shared.
20:50
Like this guy I read about,
20:51
who bought a 2020 Porsche Cayman GT4 on eBay.
20:58
I mean, there are plenty of Caymans
20:59
in great condition on eBay,
21:01
but this one needed some work.
21:03
That's just the start of the story.
21:05
So after this guy gets a great deal on his dream car,
21:08
he rebuilds the whole thing
21:10
with all these parts he found on eBay.
21:12
Performance brakes, suspension, body panels, the works,
21:18
Next thing you know,
21:19
this nearly scrapped Cayman
21:21
was out there on the track as a full-blown race car.
21:24
You're ready to go daily driver, your next Resto mod,
21:27
Hello Lotus Elon, and the parts to finish it.
21:31
eBay has thousands of cars
21:33
and is the largest online selection
21:35
of vehicle parts and accessories.
21:37
eBay, things, people, love.
21:41
Gas prices, screen time, electric bills.
21:44
Some things are better lower, especially bad cholesterol.
21:49
Even if you're on statins, dieting, and exercising,
21:52
you might need more to get to your goal.
21:54
That's where Lekvio can help.
21:56
Lekvio, or Euclizarin, is an injection given by a doctor
22:00
to help lower bad cholesterol along with diet and exercise.
22:04
Lekvio is the only bad cholesterol-lowering medicine
22:07
that's two doses a year after two initial doses.
22:10
Do not use if you've had an allergic reaction
22:12
to Lekvio or any of its ingredients.
22:14
Common side effects were injection site reaction,
22:16
including pain, redness, and rash,
22:18
joint pain, and chest cold.
22:20
You've done your part.
22:21
Ask if Lekvio can take you further.
22:23
If your bad cholesterol is still high,
22:26
ask your doctor if just two doses of Lekvio a year
22:29
after two initial doses can help.
22:31

22:38
That's L-E-Q-V-I-O dot com.
22:43
Oh, let's see what this button does.
22:44
Oh, it turns me on, look at that, I'm on the air.
22:46
Let's go over to Rocky and me.
22:47
I have to make Tom nervous today.
22:49
Let's go over to Rocky and me.
22:50
Yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck.
22:54
I'm good around you, though.
22:57
Hey, I've got a 92-G Brangler
22:59
with a 2.5-4 cylinder in it.
23:03
And about six months ago or so,
23:07
a little more than that,
23:08
I had the whole clutch and slave cylinder,
23:11
a flywheel, the whole nine yards replaced.
23:15
And I told the mechanic, I says,
23:17
check that rear main while you've got it
23:19
to fire it and make sure that's okay.
23:22
And about a month after I got it back,
23:25
that started leaking.
23:29
That's Murphy's law.
23:31
What, you said women, you're surprised at that?
23:34
Well, I was kind of of the opinion
23:37
if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
23:40
But I guess I got beat on this one.
23:42
I just didn't know.
23:43
I know you have a lot of sponsors
23:46
of different chemicals and whatnot
23:47
that do wonderful things.
23:49
And I was just wondering if there was anything
23:51
you would recommend to maybe put off changing that seal?
23:56
No, I, you know, there's,
23:58
listen, for all my sponsors
23:59
and understand the greater majority,
24:02
I think just about every one of my sponsors
24:04
is a product I've either used
24:05
and that's sort of what's led them to us
24:07
or it's something that I've seen used
24:08
and that's what's sort of led them to us.
24:09
So I have great faith in many of the products.
24:13
The rear main seal stuff,
24:14
nothing comes to mind
24:16
because frankly, it's probably just tired.
24:18
Now you could try, all right,
24:21
how many miles are on this little GM forebanger?
24:27
Right, so is this a case of excessive crankcase pressure
24:31
pushing oil out the rear main?
24:34
You know, what is the PCV valve?
24:36
What does the crankcase ventilation system look like?
24:38
And or, you know, if you were to pop the dipstick up,
24:43
you know, a quarter of an inch so it can case
24:46
and drive it around, does that slow down the leak?
24:49
And what that would in all likelihood prove to us
24:52
is that we have, you know, a moderate amount of blow by
24:55
and you know, relieving crankcase pressure
24:58
may help the problem.
24:59
My comment in the back of my head goes though,
25:02
but you know, this is a four cylinder GM.
25:09
What are we, 35 years old?
25:11
Do I have rings that are stuck in the grooves
25:15
and it's just, it's just time.
25:16
Does this consume oil?
25:18
Has this got an oil burning issue, Rock?
25:20
No, it doesn't consume a drop.
25:22
I've owned this thing for 25 years.
25:24
And you know, I just use it,
25:28
I put about 1,000 miles a year on it
25:30
as a hunting vehicle up in northern Maine.
25:34
I'm surprised they didn't do the rear main
25:37
because they were looking right at it.
25:38
It's a one piece seal.
25:40
And that was probably my fault.
25:42
I should have just told them to replace it, but.
25:45
That was the moment.
25:48
That really was the moment.
25:50
Yeah, you kind of goofed on that one, brother.
25:53
You know, I've never had a rear main replaced before.
25:56
Is that something where you can get into big trouble
25:58
if things don't go right doing it?
26:00
I, you know, it's like any other automotive repair.
26:05
You can get into big trouble
26:06
if things don't go right, period.
26:08
Tell me, tell me an auto repair.
26:10
That if things don't go right,
26:11
you're not going to get into trouble, right?
26:14
You know, it's, it's, there is a little bit of finesse there.
26:16
There's a little bit of experience that's, you know,
26:18
this isn't, you know, doing a rear main seal
26:20
is not something you want somebody to do
26:22
for the first time as a practice step.
26:25
You know, it's, it's, I've done more than a few of those.
26:28
One of the things I like for seal removal is
26:30
I will take a small drill bit, drill into the seal.
26:34
I will put a self tapping screw
26:36
and that becomes my pride point.
26:38
And this way I'm not taking a chance of touching the seal.
26:42
So I don't nick the seal, but more importantly,
26:45
I don't nick the crankshaft, right?
26:48
So, you know, hopefully your guy knows this.
26:50
If he's old school, I'm sure he does.
26:52
It's not something I invented.
26:53
I picked it up from the guy in front of me.
26:55
You know, so just, just know
26:57
that that's one way to look at it.
26:59
You know, at this stage, at a thousand miles a year,
27:03
how much of a leak is it?
27:05
My real concern, and this is what's kind of got me
27:07
scratching my head is the guy that put the clutch in,
27:10
you know, and he, I guess it wasn't leaking at that point,
27:13
but you know, is this a case of,
27:16
is the oil leak going to, you know,
27:19
somehow damage the clutch as oil continues to come out?
27:23
Yeah, I thought of that.
27:25
The one thing I want to mention,
27:27
and I don't want to mention this
27:28
because now I'm going to throw darts
27:29
and it's going to put doubt in the back of your mind.
27:32
I've seen this twice in my lifetime career as a mechanic.
27:36
Flywheel bolts get over-torqued
27:39
and they warp, you know, they distort the end of the crank.
27:43
And what does the seal ride against?
27:48
You know, is that possible?
27:49
Man, it takes a lot.
27:51
I've never seen a four cylinder GM product do that,
27:54
but I don't, I don't base a lot of my beliefs on,
27:57
well, I've never seen it do it, so it can't be bad.
28:00
You know, but it's always in the back of my mind.
28:02
Yeah, it's coincidental.
28:04
It's probably just 35 years old and 100,000 plus miles
28:07
and it's just tired, you know?
28:10
So I say, count your losses, pull the trans,
28:14
pull the flywheel, put a seal in it, drive it,
28:16
do a PCV valve, drive it, let's see where we go.
28:21
Either that or if it's 1,000 mile a year
28:23
hunting vehicle, you know what?
28:25
It's going to be out in the woods
28:28
and covered in snow and rust and water and everything else.
28:32
if we get a nice coating of oil underneath it,
28:35
it'll never rot out.
28:37
Yeah, I just, I just redid the whole frame
28:39
and recoded it inside and out.
28:41
You know, it just, just did a major upgrade on it.
28:45
You know, it's always that last part
28:48
that you don't change.
28:48
You ever notice that?
28:50
It's always that, it's always that,
28:51
well, I don't want to do this because,
28:53
and I, you know, it's, look,
28:55
it gives you something to laugh at.
28:56
If you can't laugh at life, then what's the point?
28:59
So, best dancer I got.
29:02
I think I'm going to let it leak this fall
29:04
and then see what happens and then deal with it
29:07
before another season.
29:08
Yeah, pull, like I said, pull the dipstick up a little bit
29:10
just so it's going to breathe out the crankcase that way.
29:13
See if that, see if that makes a difference.
29:15
And if it does, then that tells you
29:16
the PCV is restricted
29:17
and it'll give you another direction to go.
29:23
Enjoyed the conversation.
29:24
Good luck to you, kiddo.
29:24
Thanks a lot, I appreciate it.
29:25
You're very welcome.
29:26
Let's, let's pull over, take a pause.
29:28
When we come back, we'll go to Ted.
29:30
I'm Ronanini and the car doctor.
29:31
I'll be right back right after this.
29:34
We've all been there.
29:35
You hold on to a coupon,
29:37
hoping to cash it in at the store,
29:38
but then you forget about it.
29:39
And suddenly you've got a mountain
29:41
of useless expired coupons.
29:43
Do you think this one's still good?
29:45
Oh, mate, that expired in 1993.
29:49
Fortunately, there are better ways to save money
29:51
right by switching to GEICO.
29:52
You could save about $900 on car insurance
29:55
without ever touching a coupon.
29:57
Ooh, how about this one?
29:58
Half off floppy disks.
30:00
Now you should try a bit of spring cleaning.
30:02
It feels good to save big.
30:03
It feels good to GEICO.
30:04
Lately, car buying has become a pretty dull experience,

31:08
Ask your doctor if Lekveo and Clycerin can help.
31:11
Prescription Lekveo is the only bad cholesterol
31:14

31:15
That's two doses a year after two initial doses.
31:18
Do not use if you've had an allergic reaction

31:36
Hey, let's go to Ted at Illinois, 17 Silverado.
31:40
Ted, welcome to the car doctor, sir.
31:43
Ron, thanks a lot for taking my call.
31:46
I enjoy your show and I value your advice.
31:49
Thank you, what's going on?
31:50
I've got a 2017 Chevy truck,
31:53
Silverado four-wheel drive, 5.3 motor,
31:57
and the right front brake was hanging up the caliper.
32:01
And you'd take off and it'd be fine.
32:04
And after about maybe 20 minutes and several stops,
32:09
it would start hanging up and it would get hot.
32:12
And so I thought, well, the caliper
32:14
must be stuck or something.
32:16
And so I pulled the caliper off and rebuilt it,
32:20
put new seals in it and a dust seal too.
32:25
And put it back on and...
32:30
Nope, nope, yeah, it wasn't.
32:32
And if I, like if I stop after it does it,
32:37
if I pull over and either break the brake line,
32:41
unloosen the brake line, the caliper line,
32:43
or do the bleeder and let a little flood out of it.
32:46
And it doesn't really squirt out of there real,
32:49
harder or anything.
32:51
But it does come out.
32:53
Right, it's a dribble.
32:54
And let me ask you a couple of questions, Ted.
32:57
Simple as they may seem,
32:59
how do you know the right front is getting hot?
33:03
I mean, you go around and you can smell it
33:05
and you can, the left front,
33:07
you can grab with your hand and know, you know,
33:10
I mean, it's warm, but not hot.
33:12
But the right front, you can't touch.
33:14
But you don't know it from behind the wheel.
33:17
You get out of the truck,
33:18
you drive 20 minutes to your destination,
33:19
you get out of the truck and that's when you get
33:21
the sensation that the brake is hot.
33:23
Well, when it gets after, you know,
33:26
when you let up on it, you can tell,
33:28
you're slowing down quicker.
33:29
I'm used to the truck.
33:30
I've had the truck since it was new.
33:32
So, you know, you can tell it's slowing down a little bit.
33:37
And so I can tell that it's tightening up.
33:40
And then I get a vibration if I just keep driving it.
33:43
Okay, that's the answer I'm looking for.
33:46
So, we've clearly got something going on right front.
33:49
You've done a caliper.
33:51
How about the left front brake hose?
33:56
And here's the reason why, okay?
34:00
Believe it or not, and I've seen this both ways.
34:02
I've seen it where the right front gets hot
34:05
and it's the right front hose.
34:07
I've seen it where the right front gets hot
34:08
and it's the left hose
34:10
because the left hose peels internally
34:14
and acts like a check valve
34:15
and it constantly applies pressure to the right front.
34:19
It doesn't allow it to release.
34:22
I would never have guessed that.
34:23
But I did get two brake lines.
34:27
And they're dormant.
34:28
I assume they ought to be pretty good.
34:29
Yeah, they'll be fine.
34:31
And for the right and left,
34:33
and I was getting ready to go ahead
34:34
and replace the one that's getting hot.
34:37
But I thought, I'm just gonna get both of them.
34:42
It's gonna eliminate a lot of questions.
34:44
How many miles are on this truck?
34:48
It's a little early, but it's right on the fuzzy edge of,
34:52
yeah, okay, 100,000 miles.
34:55
Anything's possible.
34:57
Hard use, highway use, construction use.
35:00
What do you do with the truck?
35:03
Well, I actually just drive it back and forth to the farm
35:07
and I go hunting with it.
35:09
But it doesn't get a whole lot of really hard use.
35:13
I barely ever use the four-wheel drive.
35:16
And I think the two rubber brake hoses
35:20
are the next step, Ted.
35:21
And just pay attention to when you bleed it.
35:26
Does it bleed equally right and left?
35:34
Do any of the bleed give you a sense
35:38
that there's a restriction elsewhere in the system?
35:40
But the most common cause
35:42
is one of the front brake hoses is bad.
35:44
Does the truck pull to the right
35:46
when the brake gets hot?
35:49
I mean, not really hard or anything.
35:51
I mean, you can just feel it in the steering wheel.
35:54
Just feel the vibration and you know it's happening.
35:59
Have you had the occasion?
36:00
It would be interesting to see.
36:01
And it takes some work and you have to be quick
36:04
but you get it to happen.
36:05
The way we found it in the shop,
36:08
I'll say it like this,
36:08
the way we find things in the shop sometimes,
36:11
we'll drive the vehicle, we'll replicate the problem.
36:13
Yeah, the right front's starting to drag.
36:15
We'll bring it in, get it up in the air real quick
36:17
and we'll crack the left front bleeder
36:20
while somebody's spinning the wheel.
36:21
While they're spinning the wheel, the wheel is tight.
36:24
We crack the left front, the wheel spins free.
36:29
It's weird but it proves to us that it's the hose
36:33
even though it shouldn't be the hose
36:34
because, well it isn't, it isn't.
36:36
It's because when the hose goes bad,
36:39
when a hose goes bad internally,
36:41
it's kind of like a backwards banana peel.
36:44
It folds upwards and acts like a check valve.
36:46
So the apply still stays.
36:48
So when we burp the side that's got the bad hose,
36:51
we dump pressure, that allows the banana peel
36:54
to fall forward and pulls the pressure off the other side.
36:59
If we went to a break class
37:01
and we talked to a break instructor,
37:02
that is the verbatim textbook theory
37:04
that they would spout to us.
37:06
I don't disagree and the theory seems to hold water
37:10
because I've fixed more than a few
37:11
by doing that test and looking at it.
37:14
I've cut break hoses open.
37:16
I think in all the break hoses I've ever cut open
37:19
in my career, I think I found two bad ones, legitimate.
37:22
But I'd also have to cut it at the right moment.
37:24
I'm not in the habit of slicing break hoses for the length.
37:29
And it comes back to where I originally
37:31
finished our conversation.
37:32
It's cheaper at 100,000 miles and eight years old.
37:36
Put two hoses on it, move on.
37:41
If you need more, you know where to find me.
37:44
You were gonna say something.
37:45
I just gonna tell you, thanks a lot.
37:47
I really appreciate the help.
37:48
You're very welcome, sir.
37:49
I'm here if you need more.
37:52
855-560-9900, run a name in the car doctor.
37:55
I'll be back right after this.
37:57
Lately, car buying has become a pretty dull experience.
38:01
But on eBay, behind every car and part
38:03
is a story waiting to be shared.
38:06
Like this guy I read about who bought a 2020 Porsche Cayman GT4
38:10
on eBay, it was well-loved.
38:13
I mean, there are plenty of Caymans
38:15
in great condition on eBay,
38:17
but this one needed some work.
38:19
That's just the start of the story.
38:21
So after this guy gets a great deal on his dream car,
38:24
he rebuilds the whole thing
38:26
with all these parts he found on eBay.
38:28
Performance brakes, suspension, body panels, the works,
38:34
Next thing you know, this nearly scrapped Cayman
38:37
was out there on the track as a full-blown race car.
38:40
You're ready to go daily driver, your next resto mod,
38:43
Hello Lotus Elon, and the parts to finish it.
38:47
eBay has thousands of cars
38:49
and is the largest online selection
38:51
of vehicle parts and accessories.
38:53
eBay, things people love.
38:57
Gas prices, screen time, electric bills.
39:00
Some things are better, lower, especially bad cholesterol.
39:04
Even if you're on statins, dieting, and exercising,
39:08
you might need more to get to your goal.
39:10
That's where Lekvio can help.
39:12
Lekvio, or Euclisterin, is an injection given
39:15
by a doctor to help lower bad cholesterol
39:18
along with diet and exercise.
39:20
Lekvio is the only bad cholesterol-lowering medicine
39:23
that's two doses a year after two initial doses.
39:26
Do not use if you've had an allergic reaction to Lekvio
39:28
or any of its ingredients.
39:29
Common side effects were injection site reaction,
39:32
including pain, redness, and rash,
39:34
joint pain, and chest cold.
39:36
You've done your part.
39:37
Ask if Lekvio can take you further.
39:39
If your bad cholesterol is still high,
39:42
ask your doctor if just two doses of Lekvio a year
39:45
after two initial doses can help.
39:47

Then DPI Solar is for you.
40:52
I'm sick of these price hikes.

41:03
because you own your own power plant.
41:05

41:18
You know, I started the hour talking about diagnostics.
41:22
I wanna end the hour talking about diagnostics.
41:24
This comes to us from Jacob regarding
41:25
his 2011 Buick Enclave.
41:27
Ron, my car started out with a leaking number
41:30
of six injector diagnosed from a shop.
41:32
I replaced all six injectors.
41:34
I continued to have a leak.
41:35
I continued focusing on leaking injectors
41:38
till I checked fuel pressure on the fuel line.
41:40
It's always at 20 PSI and the fuel rail was 58.
41:42
I replaced both in tank and high pressure fuel pump.
41:45
Now I have 60 PSI in the line,
41:47
700 PSI on the rail,
41:48
the leaking injector problem is gone.
41:50
So just to point out the obvious,
41:53
you know that there was some sort of
41:54
misdiagnosis done there, Jacob, right?
41:56
That they told you it was an injector, it was not.
41:59
It was probably in the high pressure fuel pump itself,
42:02
you know, or one of the other injectors.
42:04
I'm not sure why we're firing the parts cannon here,
42:06
but it seemed like a better diagnosis
42:08
could have been done for that particular problem.
42:10
That isn't why I'm reading this.
42:12
After that, I had a bog shutter problem
42:14
when I got up to around 1700 RPM,
42:16
but it's idle as smooth as can be.
42:18
When I take it for a test drive at that time,
42:20
it would hesitate very obviously,
42:21
but then would start to throw check engine light
42:23
with codes of misfire on cylinders two and three.
42:26
I was suggested to check out the catalytic converters.
42:28
I took the two off,
42:32
I took the two cats off the exhaust manifolds
42:34
and hollowed them out,
42:35
but I left the third one alone.
42:37
I have checked for vacuum leaks with starting fluid.
42:39
I've tried a new mass air flow sensor.
42:41
I took back since the readings were the same
42:42
as the old one, new spark plugs,
42:43
moved coils around to make sure
42:45
it wasn't a coil check from the ECM plug
42:47
to every coil in the injector continuity
42:49
for the injector connector for continuity
42:51
to rule out wiring harness.
42:53
Replace the purge solenoid on the intake
42:55
and just today replace the vent solenoid
42:58
on the charcoal canister.
42:59
Now after the vent solenoid driving,
43:01
it hesitates at first,
43:02
but I can get it up to speed with small hiccups.
43:04
You can feel however no codes at all.
43:06
I am borrowing a top down air diagnostic pro scan tool
43:09
and doing an electric throttle relearn
43:10
as I typed this out.
43:11
Jacob, first of all,
43:14
you need to put cats back on the car
43:15
because it's gonna affect how you diagnose it.
43:18
You can't look at fuel trim,
43:19
you can't do any sort of measurements
43:22
for diagnostics at this point
43:25
because it's gonna, at some point,
43:27
it's gonna set a catalytic converter fault.
43:30
And, you know, is that real?
43:33
I would wanna know where's manifold vacuum
43:35
and all of this is going on.
43:37
I'd wanna know if you think this is related
43:40
to those two cylinders,
43:42
if you've done all your ignition,
43:43
can you do a flow rate test on the injectors?
43:45
If the problem wasn't there
43:47
till the injectors were replaced,
43:48
how do you know you've got good injectors?
43:50
Where did they come from?
43:52
Firing a parts cannon is a risk
43:54
and you're now gonna face the problems
43:56
associated with that,
43:57
but do some further testing like I suggested
43:59
and give me a call.
44:00
I'm Ronan Aine in the car doctor
44:02
till the next time.
44:02
Mechanics aren't expensive, they're priceless.
