Now, start your engines.
01:52
The car doctor is in the garage
01:54
and ready to take your call.
01:56
For the record, I had a really great open
01:59
about the good, the bad, and the ugly.
02:00
I was gonna tell you something good
02:01
that happened at the shop with a customer,
02:03
but, because I know you never hear that from me,
02:06
I'll leave you to ponder that,
02:07
because right now we have a lot of phone calls,
02:09
so let me get to the phones.
02:09
Maybe we'll squeeze that in this hour,
02:11
maybe it'll be next week.
02:13
Chad, Louisiana, 19 Chevy Blazer.
02:15
What's going on, Chad?
02:17
Yeah, one day my wife came home there.
02:20
She lost her AC and her power assistance on it
02:23
and it showed a PO-128 code.
02:26
I put my reader on and it's low temperature,
02:29
not reaching the proper-
02:32
Minimum engine temp, right?
02:35
Happened again to her next week,
02:37
and I took it up, I wasn't gonna take it to the shop,
02:40
but we didn't have it covered, so I did it myself.
02:44
We took the thermostat off
02:48
and it had part of the rubber that was curled up,
02:51
so it was part of the problem,
02:53
but my question was,
02:54
would that cause the AC to turn off
02:57
and the power assistance to go out?
02:59
Yes, because it's gonna go into default.
03:01
If it thinks the engine is running
03:03
at an incorrect temperature,
03:05
it will limit operation of other functions.
03:07
A, they're concerned about engine survivability.
03:10
B, they're trying to make you uncomfortable
03:11
so you get it fixed.
03:14
All right, there's a strategy here.
03:17
This goes back to the late 90s, early 2000s,
03:21
when a lot of the imports,
03:22
well, call them imports,
03:23
now they're domestics as far as I'm concerned,
03:25
but Toyota's, Honda's, a lot of the vehicles
03:27
would turn on every single dashboard light
03:30
for a bad O2 sensor or a fault code in the engine.
03:33
They would limit the way safety functions would operate.
03:35
So yeah, that we call that operating strategy.
03:38
I call that an attention-getter.
03:42
Is it operating properly now?
03:45
Yeah, it's doing good.
03:46
I just didn't want it to come back on.
03:48
So I'm curious if it would be something else or...
03:51
Well, the other side of that is,
03:55
you know, so let's say it comes back, right?
03:58
Chad put a thermostat in it.
03:59
I'm sure you got a good quality thermostat,
04:01
whatever you got, right?
04:03
Okay, right, so you gotta know we stat.
04:05
And let's say the problem comes back
04:08
and let's say it's not related to the rubber seal bypassing
04:12
because that's what it was doing.
04:12
It was allowing coolant to leak past
04:14
and run at a lower engine temperature.
04:17
What would you look at next?
04:19
I'm gonna make you think.
04:21
Oh, I would check the sensor.
04:22
Well, right. Which I was gonna change,
04:26
but the way they have that sensor in there,
04:28
I didn't have the tool to get it out.
04:29
Right, I think that's the one that's down on the head
04:32
and it's under a ledge.
04:33
Yes. Yeah, so nobody has that tool.
04:36
I was thinking of a crow's foot,
04:39
but it might be getting it, but I'm not too sure.
04:41
Yeah, you have to get it.
04:42
What you do is you have to sacrifice a crow's foot.
04:45
Here's what you gotta do, all right,
04:46
if you wanna know the truth.
04:48
You have to go to Harbor Freight.
04:50
You have to buy a crow's foot and an extension
04:54
and weld the two pieces together.
04:55
Or, you know, spend three times the money,
04:57
go to your local snap-on guy,
04:59
buy a crow's foot, buy the extension
05:01
and weld the two pieces together
05:02
and you'll make a tool or you're gonna cut a wrench.
05:05
There's no known tool.
05:07
I haven't, because I know exactly where this sensor is.
05:10
I've looked at it going,
05:11
God, that's gonna be horrible to change
05:13
if and when it goes bad.
05:14
So, you know, it's gonna be one of those,
05:18
we're gonna make a tool kind of a thing.
05:20
Yeah, that's, but yeah, you're right.
05:22
I would look at the temp sensor,
05:23
I would look at the dashboard readings.
05:25
I would take it out for a ride with my scan tool
05:27
and monitor everything.
05:30
The first time it happened to her,
05:32
it was only getting up to 195
05:34
and when I changed the thermostat
05:35
and actually got up to above 200.
05:38
Right, it typically runs in the 205 range,
05:40
which to me is mind-boggling
05:42
that we run cars that hot,
05:43
but it's been that way for 20 years.
05:44
So, that's what it is.
05:48
All right, I do appreciate it.
05:50
I'm very well, you're very welcome.
05:51
And I was surprised to get the call.
05:52
So, well, no, listen, that's what we're here for.
05:54
We're just trying to help you guys.
05:55
Hey, listen, I did it this week.
05:57
I called the gentleman in North Carolina
05:59
during the day from the shop.
06:00
I thought the guy was gonna fall off his chair.
06:03
You know, but I mean,
06:04
I'm just trying to help people fix cars, brother.
06:05
That's all this is about.
06:07
Chuck, now I like buying older vehicles
06:09
of their lot easier to work on than the newer one.
06:11
Right, well, you know,
06:13
I wonder if you're gonna say that in 10 years.
06:16
You know, is the car,
06:18
is the 2025 whatever Chevy Blazer today
06:23
in 10 years will you say it's easier to work on?
06:28
because we've got 10 years of experience fixing it
06:30
and we know where the pattern failures are.
06:33
So, but you know, that's always be open to that.
06:36
That's probably what's gonna happen.
06:42
Let's go to Gary, Wisconsin, 17 Explorer.
06:44
I mean, Explorer, did I say that?
06:46
P0300, what's going on here, Gary?
06:50
Well, like you just said,
06:52
I get a 17 Explorer with a P0300 code
06:59
and a P0316 as well,
07:03
according to the Ford garage.
07:06
I can't get that on my code reader
07:08
but they picked it up.
07:11
Well, cause they're picking it up on,
07:12
they're picking it up under year make model.
07:13
You may not be able to get that on OBD too.
07:16
And they're telling you,
07:17
and they're telling you what's at fault.
07:21
No, they're, go ahead.
07:26
Gary, they're saying what's at fault.
07:30
Have they diagnosed it?
07:36
On the first visit, they said,
07:39
just put in spark plugs,
07:41
but the spark plugs had already been replaced
07:45
with Ford Motor Company plugs
07:49
and less than 5,000 miles.
07:53
So on the second visit,
07:55
they said what you really need
07:58
is a injector service
08:01
and coil boots for the spark plugs.
08:06
stop you're right there for a quick second.
08:09
This is a V6, no turbo motor, right?
08:12
Or is this the four-cylinder?
08:14
No, this is a V6, it's got the 3.5.
08:17
Are they charging you for this alleged diagnosis?
08:22
Yes, they charge me about $200 so far,
08:27
but that's not a lot of money.
08:29
I don't think they've earned their pay yet.
08:31
I'm not hearing anything
08:37
How does the car run?
08:41
It runs fine after the first one minute,
08:45
I suppose a minute and a half somewhere in there.
08:48
Okay, so. The very first is just low rough.
08:51
So this is a cold engine misfire?
08:57
Have they verified that?
08:59
is that just Gary telling them what he experiences?
09:03
Well, what, no, they haven't been able to duplicate that.
09:07
They just, they do, they haven't put it this way.
09:14
On the third visit, after looking over more closely,
09:18
they decided it must be an injector leaking.
09:24
and therefore, contaminating in,
09:28
I suppose in the lower,
09:33
Well, it's gas washing the cylinder.
09:36
Let me ask you something, Gary.
09:38
How confident are you these guys know what they're doing?
09:44
Not 100% satisfied with them though.
09:47
Brother, you're right on the same page.
09:51
Here's how I would approach this diagnosis, okay?
09:54
And I try not to armchair quarterback,
09:57
but man, I gotta jump in on this one, all right?
10:01
Hey, Ron, you're the customer, right Gary?
10:03
Hey, Ron, my car's got a, it's got a misfire.
10:05
Sure, Gary, let me take a look at it.
10:07
Gary, it's misfiring.
10:09
which is random multiple cylinder misfire.
10:12
Doesn't have to be ignition.
10:14
Doesn't have to be fuel.
10:15
Could be mechanical.
10:17
Could be a bad harmonic balancer
10:18
causing the serp belt to slip.
10:20
I mean, anything that would make the crank stutter,
10:22
so to speak, right?
10:24
So you've got a P0300 and you've got a 316,
10:28
which means it's detecting a misfire
10:31
under a thousand revolutions on startup.
10:34
Okay, hey, no, Gary,
10:36
let me go do a little deeper diagnosis.
10:37
I'm gonna get into mode six.
10:38
Mode six is the binary language of when that fault occurs.
10:42
I'm also gonna go look at freeze frame.
10:44
Freeze frame is the video snapshot of an approximation
10:48
of what the engine was doing when the fault occurred.
10:51
I'm gonna see, hey, Gary,
10:52
you know this happens during warmup?
10:54
Once the engine gets to 195 or 200 operating degrees,
10:57
the misfire goes away.
10:59
Yeah, okay, hey, Gary,
11:00
I'm dealing with a cold engine misfire.
11:03
That took me, that took me, I'll be lazy that day.
11:08
Danny interrupted me and I had two cups of coffee.
11:10
That took me 35 minutes.
11:15
You know, what am I looking for?
11:18
So I tell you what, sit tight.
11:21
Let me pull over real fast.
11:22
Take this pause and I'll come back.
11:23
We'll finish up with you real quick,
11:24
but I wanna give you some ammo.
11:25
I'm Ron and Annie in the car doctor.
11:26
I'll be back right after this.

12:16
Gary, Wisconsin, you're still there, sir.
12:20
Gary, I'm gonna make a mechanic out of you, all right?
12:23
In the next seven minutes,
12:25
I'm gonna make you smarter than the guys at the Ford garage.
12:30
Okay, you got a pencil and paper?
12:33
Okay, you can write.
12:34
Good, you're already halfway there.
12:36
So my first 35 minutes I've established
12:39
when the fault occurs, what fault occurs,
12:42
and I'm going to go look at Mode 6 and Freeze Frame
12:45
to verify what engine conditions were going on
12:48
and which exact cylinders are actually misfiring.
12:53
Some may misfire more than others.
12:57
They did a Code 6 and they came up with cylinder one
13:02
misfire twice in 10 drive cycles
13:05
and number two twice, number three, three times,
13:09
number four, two times, number five once, number six once.
13:15
Okay, so it's spread out over all of the cylinders.
13:22
And when the car warms up, the problem goes away.
13:29
Can we do a cylinder power balance test?
13:31
Can we see if one injector is more offensive than the rest?
13:37
Cylinder balance, yeah.
13:38
Now Ford, and it's really great,
13:42
a Ford factory scan tool gives you the ability
13:45
to do a cylinder power balance test
13:47
right from the seat of the car.
13:49
You don't have to lift the hood or anything.
13:51
There's nothing to do, you plug in, you get to the test
13:53
and it will show you which cylinders
13:55
and can I do that test warm?
13:57
Is this truly a cold problem?
14:02
Let's see, that'll take me 15 minutes.
14:05
I'm done, 335 minutes for,
14:08
I've now got, what am I, 50 minutes into the car?
14:12
Right, the last 10 minutes I'm gonna hook up a fuel,
14:14
the last 10 minutes I'm gonna hook up a fuel pressure gauge,
14:18
verify fuel pressure
14:20
and I'm gonna shut the car off.
14:22
I'm gonna go get a cup of coffee.
14:24
I'm gonna come back in 20 minutes,
14:27
has the system held residual pressure?
14:31
It should hold residual pressure for 10 to 20 minutes
14:34
after I cycle the key off.
14:37
If it's zero, I'm thinking I've got an injector
14:42
It's okay, I can say peeing on radio,
14:43
that's not a bad word.
14:47
And then which cylinder misfires the most when I start it?
14:50
Maybe I'm gonna go to that cylinder.
14:52
Do I have a mechanical leak down issue?
14:55
All right, but you know, well,
14:57
maybe you need spark plugs, maybe you need coil boots,
14:59
maybe you need injectors.
15:05
You know, a 2022 Ford F-150 pickup,
15:11
you can't buy the coil boots separately.
15:13
Don't ask me how I know.
15:14
You have to buy the whole coil.
15:16
So if you think you've got bad boots on a three-year-old truck,
15:21
it's $182 a coil times eight.
15:27
We're gonna spend, you know, $1,600 on a gas.
15:32
We better learn how to diagnose cars, right?
15:37
So, and that's my point.
15:41
An injector cleaning might be a wonderful thing.
15:44
It can't hurt, but you know, how many miles are on this car?
15:49
Now I'm gonna ask mileage, right?
15:50
If you notice, I haven't asked mileage yet.
15:52
How many miles are on this car?
15:56
Okay, so have you ever done spark plugs?
16:02
Okay, and the problem happened after that.
16:06
Or the problem was going on at the time.
16:09
Yeah, what, no, it happened after that.
16:13
Do we think maybe we installed a spark plug,
16:16
or I'm sorry, an ignition coil room?
16:20
Is it possible we need boots
16:22
because we didn't use any dielectric grease to seal them?
16:29
Right, I'm speaking, I'm speaking, you know,
16:32
off the top of my head.
16:33
Have these been your guys all along?
16:38
So let me ask you, it's just you and me, Gary.
16:42
We're sitting at a soda fountain having a Coke, right?
16:47
These guys don't seem to exude a lot of confidence from you,
16:52
And they've had 100,000 miles to prove themselves.
17:01
Oh, that's true, wow.
17:03
Maybe 60,000 that was used.
17:05
All right, so it was 60,000, it was used.
17:08
If you were dating these guys, wouldn't you call this a bad date?
17:14
Isn't it time to get...
17:15
Isn't it time to get out of the ring?
17:16
It's time for a divorce, isn't it?
17:20
I mean, this is a bad marriage, brother.
17:24
And I just don't see it, you know?
17:28
Listen, you come to the...
17:31
I had customers this morning.
17:32
I was in the shop this weekend because we were so busy
17:34
I couldn't deliver all the cars by the end of the week on Friday.
17:37
So I had to go into the shop this morning to actually get some cars out, right?
17:40
And we're joking and kidding around and we're talking about this
17:43
and we're talking about that.
17:45
But I can do that because, you know what?
17:47
I know the car's fixed.
17:49
I've got a great relationship because the relationship is the biggest,
17:51
most important part of the repair process.
17:55
You've got a bad relationship here.
17:57
These guys are just...
17:59
I mean, either that or you're lying to me, Gary.
18:01
And I don't think you are.
18:02
I think you're a straight shooter.
18:05
Yeah, these guys are kind of dopey.
18:07
You're just a number to them.
18:09
You know, they're like little robots.
18:11
Nobody's explaining anything.
18:12
Nobody's taking the time to sit down and talk to them.
18:15
So I think it's time, you know,
18:17
it's time for you to go talk to your service writer
18:19
and say, look, you guys have been my guys
18:21
for the past 60,000 miles X number of years.
18:23
I want you to be my mechanics.
18:26
I don't want to go somewhere else,
18:28
but I'm not getting a lot of warm fuzzies here.
18:31
Every once in a while,
18:32
you got to have that cup of coffee conversation
18:34
with your mechanic and say, you know,
18:36
if the relationship isn't great
18:38
because it sounds like we're guessing.
18:43
Yeah, they've even said on the second visit
18:48
and that just spurred me somewhat.
18:52
I just want to find out what's the matter.
18:55
Have they tried selling you a new car yet?
19:00
No, I know they haven't.
19:04
You call me back next week.
19:05
That's coming, Gary.
19:06
They're going to say, you know what?
19:07
You need a new car.
19:08
This one's eight years old.
19:10
But think about it.
19:12
Those are some of the things I would look at.
19:13
Those are some of the tests they need to do.
19:15
We've got an hour in this car, Gary.
19:17
We've got an hour in this car
19:18
and we already know more than them.
19:22
Time to get a divorce.
19:26
I'm Ron Ananey in the car doctor.
19:28
I'll be back right after this.
19:33
Somewhere somebody's going,
19:34
what's a four barrel carb?
19:36
Let's go to Robert in Nevada.
19:38
Robert, welcome to the car doctor, sir.
19:42
It's always a pleasure.
19:46
You know, I got a F-350.
19:51
It's got the 460, the large motor.
19:55
About a year ago, me and a buddy changed the gas pump
20:01
And because it was going out in a week
20:04
and I changed the filter
20:06
and it started pumping.
20:08
When you're on the front tank,
20:09
it'll pump and pressure the back tank.
20:12
The point where the side's dripping,
20:14
it'll shoot gas out.
20:15
It'll take the cap off.
20:17
So about three weeks ago,
20:21
I replaced the back pump.
20:23
So I had it in a shop for a few other things.
20:26
They redid all the brakes and stuff.
20:28
And I asked them to fix that or do whatever.
20:30
They never fixed it.
20:32
I had it in there two more times.
20:34
They were supposed to fix it.
20:37
And about three weeks ago,
20:39
the back tank started going out.
20:40
So I replaced the pump in it.
20:42
And now it pumps to the front tank.
20:45
And then the other day,
20:48
two days or three days ago,
20:49
it hit me because I heard one of your commercials
20:51
and I was like, man,
20:52
I got to call the doctor
20:54
because I've been talking to people and...
20:57
Here's the deal, Lucille.
21:02
If we built a time machine,
21:04
we went back to 1998.
21:07
When that vehicle was under recall
21:10
for problems with the check valves
21:12
that were built into the fuel pumps
21:14
for this exact problem,
21:17
because there was an install issue at the factory
21:19
and they slowly developed over time.
21:23
So when you say you put a fuel pump in this,
21:26
did you put just the pump
21:29
or the whole assembly?
21:32
Well, no, I had to take it...
21:35
No, I had to take it apart
21:37
and then put pieces together
21:39
out of the old pump.
21:44
See, it's hard for me to answer
21:46
because I don't know if this vehicle
21:48
had the recall done to it or not.
21:52
There was a recall where the external check valve
21:56
may be on the pressure line
21:58
in each tank assembly.
22:00
If the check valves were installed,
22:03
there may be one in the tank
22:05
where the new fuel pump's being installed
22:07
and that causes it to pump to the opposite tank.
22:10
And then, again, if it wasn't done
22:12
and now you put a fuel pump with a check valve,
22:15
we could be going in the wrong direction.
22:19
Yeah, that's probably the word I would use
22:21
or something there.
22:22
Sorry, man, no, I...
22:24
This is a check valve-related issue.
22:29
So the question is,
22:33
what did these pumps originally have?
22:35
Now, in theory, if you change the front pump,
22:38
just the pump and not the assembly,
22:41
and I've got a feeling you changed the assembly,
22:45
If you just put an electric pump in the front unit
22:48
where you pulled out the whole module and all
22:50
and just swapped out the pump,
22:52
you shouldn't have changed anything.
22:54
The fact that it changed when you put
22:56
the fuel pump assembly in it
22:59
tells me that you probably put an assembly
23:01
with a check valve in it
23:05
and now you've got it.
23:07
And I bet there's a check valve on the frame rail, too.
23:11
Would that be by the filter?
23:15
You know, where it is after 40 years.
23:19
Anybody's guess, brother?
23:22
It never had this problem,
23:24
so I changed the first pump
23:26
and put in the other pump and it's the exact opposite.
23:28
But there's something to think about.
23:30
Yeah, I really think that if you go back
23:32
and look, you probably put
23:34
an electric pump assembly in the front
23:37
and then whose pump did you use?
23:40
I would call that manufacturer, whoever it was,
23:42
whoever's pump it was,
23:44
and I would talk to tech support and say,
23:46
here's the problem I've got.
23:48
Does your pump assembly, as I purchased it,
23:51
have a check valve built into the pump or not?
23:55
And get an answer from them because they'll know how they...
23:58
Because I always wondered, I'm not surprised at this question,
24:00
because I always wondered since Ford did an external recall
24:03
and they changed the check valving on the vehicles.
24:06
I always wondered, I said,
24:07
I wonder what's going to happen when the aftermarket
24:09
gets a hold of this?
24:10
How bad could the aftermarket screw it up?
24:12
And what sort of fuel pumps they're going to put out?
24:20
Yeah, I would ask the manufacturer.
24:22
Listen, you know, the industry hasn't gotten any smarter.
24:25
I'll tell you the ugly.
24:27
All right, I'm going to tell you the ugly real quick.
24:29
I was going to talk about the good, the bad and the ugly.
24:31
Here's the ugly car from this week.
24:33
I had a 19-fusion in the shop.
24:35
I had to do front brakes.
24:37
I bought the brake pads.
24:38
I bought the rotors.
24:39
Same brand, good brand.
24:43
And I had the same complaint that the customer had
24:45
when we did them three years ago,
24:47
where they would clunk once in a while.
24:49
And I kept thinking about it.
24:50
Why do I get a brake pad clunk?
24:51
And now I'm like aware of it.
24:53
I'm more dialed in.
24:54
I kept going through.
24:55
I had to order four sets of brake pads,
24:58
1653s, 812s, 1853s, and so on.
25:03
And it turns out somewhere along the way,
25:05
a long story short,
25:06
because we've only got an hour radio show left today,
25:09
Ford changed the part number of the brake pad
25:15
The new pad has a piece of double-sided sticky tape
25:18
so that they actually glue the caliper
25:20
right to the bracket base
25:22
so it doesn't shift around.
25:27
I've got a stack of brake pads in the shop
25:29
that are going back on Monday.
25:33
Why do we have to go through this?
25:35
Why can't we call manufacturers
25:37
and have them know what the hell they're selling
25:41
Well, it's all in the engineering.
25:44
And it's all in the engineering
25:45
and it's all in the supplements
25:46
and it all does the information,
25:47
you know, work its way downhill.
25:49
You got time for one quick question
25:54
So when you hit the clutch
25:56
and it doesn't want to,
25:57
you got to really kick it sometimes.
26:00
And I believe there's an adjustment.
26:01
What do I got to replace or do
26:03
because it seems like it's just going out
26:05
or one of these days
26:06
it's just not going to want to start
26:07
because that clutch will...
26:09
Wait, so in other words,
26:10
if you don't push it far enough,
26:11
the starter won't engage?
26:14
It won't start, yeah.
26:15
Okay, so there's going to be a switch,
26:17
like a brake light switch on the clutch pedal.
26:22
Any slop in the linkage?
26:25
Is the switch worn?
26:26
Is the switch sitting in the hole
26:29
that the pedals hit it so many times?
26:30
How many millions of miles
26:34
Well, the truck's probably 420,000
26:38
but it's got a new factory block motor.
26:42
Well, yeah, but when you
26:43
change the engine block,
26:44
did you change the clutch linkage
26:48
Well, there you go.
26:49
See, that's what I mean.
26:52
So crawl under the dash,
26:55
and take a flashlight with you
26:58
as you depress the pedal,
26:59
there's going to be a stop
27:00
that has to hit a tab
27:02
that's the brake light switch.
27:05
Now, if the linkage is worn
27:07
and you can't get at the contact
27:09
to switch any better
27:10
because some infinitesimally
27:12
obsolete part that no longer
27:13
exists on the planet isn't around
27:15
and you need to make the pedal
27:17
contact to switch sooner,
27:22
You know, the old days,
27:23
vacuum cap, carburetors,
27:24
vacuum lines, that kind of thing.
27:27
Find the right size vacuum cap,
27:28
put it on the end of that switch
27:29
so it depresses the button
27:31
but you'll probably have to trim
27:32
the rubber a little bit
27:33
so it can depress down.
27:37
Well, that's better than duct tape.
27:38
Right, that's better than duct tape.
27:39
Yeah, I'm always better than duct tape,
27:41
and see what that does.
27:43
All right, that's it.
27:46
You're very welcome.
27:47
You're very welcome.
27:48
I'm out there in Nevada.
27:50
I wonder if I'm still on the billboard.
27:55
I'll be back right after this.
27:59
And we are rolling down the highway.
28:01
Let's go back to Frank in Illinois
28:02
and return call from a couple of weeks ago.
28:04
Frank, what's the status
28:05
on this 15 Highlander?
28:06
What did you find out?
28:07
Well, I got the results back.
28:10
Of course they give
28:14
This was done at 3,300 miles.
28:17
The report came back stating
28:20
that the wear materials
28:21
are at the lower level of the mats.
28:23
A good sign that the wearing parts
28:25
of the engine are operated
28:26
in a healthy manner.
28:27
No contamination turned up for fuel,
28:30
coolant, water, dirt,
28:33
and the 0W-20 range.
28:35
Low insolubles and silicone
28:38
showed effective oil and air filtration.
28:41
Exit results overall.
28:44
The only thing I noticed
28:46
that might be a little high for 3,300
28:49
was the calcium, magnesium,
28:52
phosphorus, and zinc levels for 3,300
28:55
might have been a hair high,
28:56
but it wasn't over the universal averages.
28:59
So the only thing I can assume
29:00
is when it was serviced at the dealer,
29:03
I don't know how they got
29:04
all that gold speck and flakes
29:06
and stuff in that engine,
29:08
but kind of cut the filters open
29:11
Nothing was in there.
29:12
So it's somewhat still a mystery,
29:15
but the V6 is running whisper quiet,
29:18
so I guess I don't know for sure.
29:20
Well, you know, is it possible
29:23
and we're assuming,
29:26
which is a dangerous word
29:27
for a lot of reasons, all right?
29:30
You know, one of the things
29:32
a good couple of years ago
29:33
is I built a funnel rack.
29:35
You know what I mean by a funnel rack?
29:37
We took some two-inch white plumbers pipe
29:39
and we basically made an octopus
29:41
and we bolted it to the wall.
29:45
It all funnels down.
29:46
It all necks down to one pipe
29:48
and then it drips into a pail.
29:50
And that's our filter rack
29:51
and we, you know, the oil filter
29:52
because we probably have
29:54
14 different oil filters
29:57
I didn't like about that was,
29:59
how else would you store
30:01
You're tripping over them.
30:02
They fall all over the ground
30:03
no matter what you do,
30:04
is you're exposing the face
30:07
or the outside of the funnel
30:11
Shop's a dirty environment.
30:16
through her due diligence
30:17
and research, hence the name.
30:19
She found funnel covers.
30:21
So every time we do an oil change
30:22
we take the filter down,
30:23
we take the cover off,
30:24
we put it in the car,
30:26
put it back in the rack,
30:27
put the funnel cover back on,
30:28
the lid so it doesn't get dirty,
30:30
it doesn't get contaminated.
30:31
Maybe that material got in the engine
30:33
because they're not careful
30:35
and raw material, wrong material
30:39
as a result of that.
30:40
That could be the only reason
30:42
I could see because, like I said,
30:44
other than them serving the sip
30:45
when I initially had bought it
30:48
I changed the oil and filters,
30:50
I wipe all the plastic funnels,
30:52
I put them in plastic bags,
30:55
I re-wipe them when I change the oil again.
30:57
So it had to come from them somehow
31:00
but they put a lot in there,
31:04
Either that or they had a lot
31:05
of contaminant in the air.
31:07
I worry about outside contamination
31:10
but that's the only way I could think
31:12
oil would get contaminated like that
31:14
or did it come out of the dealership
31:17
but I don't see how.
31:19
I don't see how their oil would be
31:22
because it's coming out of a bag
31:23
or a box or something like that.
31:25
You would think that would be
31:26
a cataclysmic failure
31:31
they bought it used from them,
31:33
they serviced it up
31:34
and at the first dump
31:36
is when all the flakes and the
31:40
I called you and you said,
31:41
well, it's a good place
31:42
for a Blackstone oil report
31:44
and that's how it comes back.
31:48
time will tell if that engine
31:49
is still running in a year
31:50
and I would expect it to be,
31:52
Blackstone's accurate.
31:54
it's all smoke and mirrors.
31:58
you're going to be our guinea pig,
32:02
you keep listening,
32:03
you call us in a year,
32:05
how that engine's doing,
32:07
I'll let you know down the line,
32:13
you have a great rest of the weekend.
32:15
Ron and Amy and the car doctor
32:16
coming back right after this.
32:21
I want to finish today
32:23
talking about the good and the bad, right?
32:25
We were going to talk about the good,
32:26
the bad and the ugly
32:27
and we had so many calls,
32:28
but let me finish here.
32:29
So you know the ugly,
32:30
the ugly was the Ford Fusion,
32:31
it took four sets of brake pads
32:34
than I can count of research
32:35
to find the right set of pads,
32:36
as Ford has updated them
32:38
and they haven't told anybody.
32:41
And I realize the ugly comes about
32:43
because people don't know
32:44
and that's a very simple statement,
32:46
but it's the truth,
32:47
people don't understand auto repair,
32:49
they don't know how to interact,
32:50
they don't know how to communicate
32:52
Fellow walked into the shop
32:54
one afternoon this week
32:57
eight fuel injectors
33:01
how do we get here?
33:02
And I have the injectors.
33:04
I went to Rock Auto
33:05
and I bought six of these
33:07
and they look the same
33:08
and whoa, time out.
33:10
a high mileage on it.
33:11
I think it was 300,000 miles.
33:13
Well, who diagnosed it?
33:15
I start asking all the questions.
33:17
Well, a buddy of mine,
33:18
he has access to a snap-on scan tool,
33:20
snap-on diagnostics,
33:21
proved this to be the repair,
33:23
it's got a fuel distribution problem
33:30
You know, where do you go with that?
33:31
How do you approach that?
33:33
That's like walking
33:34
in the doctor's office
33:36
I need this knee replaced
33:37
because it hurts every third Tuesday?
33:39
Can you give me a price?
33:41
I don't understand that.
33:42
I don't understand how
33:43
some people think that
33:44
walking in and asking for a repair
33:46
without a diagnosis,
33:47
without any conversation
33:49
is the right way to go.
33:51
And I said to Steve,
33:54
I didn't throw him out,
33:55
I was actually nice,
33:59
you just get frustrated.
34:00
I maintain my composure
34:02
like I'm supposed to
34:03
and I kind of walked him
34:04
through several steps.
34:05
I asked him to send me an email.
34:06
I've yet to see it,
34:10
Don't walk into a repair shop
34:12
and just assume they're there
34:13
waiting for you to show up
34:14
and that you're going to,
34:16
you're not going to bring your eggs
34:17
to the diner and say here,
34:19
because when they give somebody
34:21
somebody's got to be responsible.
34:24
the good with Sean,
34:25
Sean's a new customer.
34:30
Hey, I need breaks on my escape,
34:35
and I kind of walked him
34:37
because pricing is very sensitive,
34:39
Everybody has perceived values
34:40
and I wanted him to understand
34:41
what we're going to do
34:42
and how we're going to do it
34:43
and especially with breaks.
34:44
There's no cheating on breaks.
34:46
Some repairs you can cheat
34:47
at customer requests.
34:48
There's some things you can cut
34:51
and you'll explain it
34:53
to keep them informed
34:54
because it's your obligation
34:55
to keep them informed.
34:57
better stop on a dime,
34:58
give you nine cents change
34:59
as the saying goes, right?
35:00
And it was a pleasure
35:01
and Sean was probably
35:03
the best customer of the week
35:05
given us any money yet.
35:07
it just made me think
35:13
And that's the challenge
35:17
to hear that story.
35:19
Thank you for the therapy.
35:23
It's been an absolute pleasure
35:24
until the next time.
35:29
This is an I heart podcast.
