You know, let's get in with some car updates.

Patrick, we haven't seen you in a while.

Let's start with you with the with your car updates, man, you got that? You got that S Jesse yet or

what? No.

Not yet, not yet. Working towards it, getting

closer, getting closer to it, but our updates, not much actually. For a while actually, the the

Hallux was out of Commission. Yeah, it was.

It got hit on the side, you know, packed on the side of the street, didn't it? Yeah, it was, but but I I did

get that back. It was all all checked out.

I'd re overhauled the suspension all that.

But probably like not even a month later after getting back to vehicle, I ran into an issue where the car would just essentially just cut power, go into lip mode and just stole just lose fuel pressure. So I said we first thing we

suspect and we want to rule out first was the fuel pump because obviously it's the most expensive thing on those to replace bar it was final. So it was a little restarting

priming was all good. I went through a rabbit hole

with this crank angle sensors, You know, I checked the injector duty cycle on it. What else will we replace?

There's another sensor we replaced as well.

I can't remember what it was. Fuel, sorry, fuel pressure

regulator we replaced as well. And we turned out just for one

last essentially how merry attempt.

We just, I went and picked up as pretty much a reconditioned fuel rail and yeah, that that was the issue.

So apparently my fuel rail old one essentially bit the dust and since then the car's been running phenomenal.

It's going strong. Hopefully in a few weeks I'll

put a canopy on it to set that up, put truck some roof racks on it, get a more suited for work and whatnot.

But yeah, it's, it's, it's going good.

Like I've, I've got no issues with it.

My younger brother be be irrelevant, but obviously he's got a, he bought my other brother's Sporteo Sporteo off him and he got a bit of an A wreck.

I was reversing out the driveway and he got collected by one of the school buses. Yeah.

So luckily the only damage she copped was the RE tailgate and the bar and we've literally found a wrecking same colour black Sportivo where we could. We picked up the tailgate and

the rear bar for 250 bucks, so it's a win.

So we got that sorted. So the TiVo leaves again.

Going. Well, I remember I'm, I'm not

sure if you guys know, but I know I, I sent Matt my, my, my dad's old mate, one of my dad's great friends.

He's got a one on 8 Cosworth. He's brought back into the shop.

It's sick, it's sick. And after you've, I remember

being seven years old in that car and seeing the same cut in the exact same state as he left, all from Germany.

New fuel pump got a new clutch and flywheel.

What else do we do on it? The I think something new new

new ignition system in it as well.

It had a fair bit of work done, but I took it actually the other week I took it for one pass my dad's shot, but I took it for a spin for the first time mate. What a car, what a car.

The sound of it, the engine, the just starting in, it's weird with the dog leg starting in second.

But yeah it's sick car. But yeah besides that I mean

nothing really new, still obviously working towards as chassis and my mate just picked up a turbo charged GT86.

Man, those things are weapons. Yeah, but the.

New I need 270 kilowatts at the at the rear wheels man EE chirps. It's fun, so yeah, no, But

besides that, yeah, everything's going good luck's still still going strong. And yeah, we're still on the

hunt, so. Yeah, man nice.

Well, it's it's this is good. This is really good.

This is good to say good to good to see your your likes is back on track. I I need to see it with with all

with it's all new suspension that that's.

Something oh mate, it's it's funny because it's an old car with over 300,000 so the rest of the car pretty much shows it's age and then you look underneath it and it's just bright yellow and blue, but it drives great. You know, it, it's, it's just

this is a testament to, you know, Toyota's engineers back in the day, just how much they just in the whole drivetrain and they really over engineer everything, just make everything last.

And you literally just overhaul the suspension, CVS, ball joints, bushes, everything. It's just it drives better than

factor, I'd say. So it's a great car and

hopefully it will last me another 300,000.

So yeah, see what we get there. 100% looks tough.

So I did get the little orange car out and do my Nurburg, no, my Melbourg ring on Sunday just to charge up the battery down the freeway back out through sort of off at Ringwood there and out through North Ringwood, Warrandyte, that sort of thing nice little loop, lots of nice cars out on the road.

I was in the traffic today with in in two rack Rd so there's two lanes going each way and there was a lot of traffic this morning but I found myself next to a lovely AW11MR2 on full Ridge, windows down, pop up, headlights up and he just gave me a big thumbs up. He was, he was pretty chopped.

I think someone but I I haven't sent the photo through.

But my goodness, they stand out on the road, like with amongst them, the sea of SUVs, you know, driving through Camberwell.

in my neighbour's garage for 6 to 20 years, not being driven or and we pump the tyres up and they've stayed pumped up interestingly. So, you know, might as well just

rob some plates on and driving I reckon.

pushed out of the garage and I think total way just to make sure that it's and checked over properly before it gets started.

Yeah, I was speaking to you about that car last night, I think. Yeah, I think don't put the

ignition on because it'll prime the fuel pump if it still works and it'll just put all that old fuel through the car and might be in a bit of struck so I can clean the tank.

Yeah. And then then go from.

You suggest to taking the fuel pump fuse out?

Yeah. Yeah, the relay.

Fuse yeah. So I think I'll do that just

anyway with, without trying to start it anyway, just so no one else tries to start it or or prime it.

That makes perfect sense. By the way, it's Voyages, the

through the purchasing experience and took a friend who's been looking for a new car and we, we bought a new car today, which was is always exciting.

She said, oh, you must be really bored of talking about cars all the time. I said yeah, no, no, I'm quite

happily doing this all the time. So this is a friend of mine who

has had this bought her last new car in 1985 and that car has travelled 104,000 KS in that time.

So certainly doesn't do she suddenly doesn't do a lot of KS.

Although who knows, this car might give her the, the, the, the job she needs to do a bit more adventuring and driving out. So what are you?

And her last car was manual and she wanted another manual.

So that severely limits what you can actually buy.

So we actually, we came down to Suzuki Swift, Kia Picanto or a Hyundai Venue. So she's now the prouder owner

of a new Hyundai Venue, which she absolutely loves.

And I can see why compared to the other two.

So analogue, like just like all, it's almost like 80s tech.

No, sorry, home. That's not, that's that's

overstating it. But you know, it's got a key.

You you, you put the key in the ignition and you turn it, you know, like all that sort of stuff.

That's unheard of. Yeah, I know, I know.

I was, I was quite surprised. But you know, it's got

everything you need. It's got all safety gear.

It's got the the airbags and stuff.

Which of course she hasn't had been having an 85 model car.

So yeah, she's pretty excited. So that was really good.

It helps when you know, people in the trade.

And she'd actually gone into a dealership the other day and looked looked at 1:00 and she said I asked for some help.

And, you know, she said they were very busy and they said they'd come, you know, get back to me.

And no one did. And, you know, she walked out of

the dealership half an hour later and having not not even sort of sat in one. So I said no, no, no, no.

I said I'll take you, I'll take you to a different dealership.

And I knew a number of people there and they did a brilliant deal and they're just very kind and, and, you know, explained everything, no pressure or anything at all.

And I'd actually said, you know, don't buy today.

You know, go home and think about it's a big, big decision and stuff. So I'm busy saying, you know,

just give us the price and, you know, we'll go and we'll think about it. And, and she just reached out

and put her hand on my arm and said, actually, I've thought about it. She said buy it.

But David, it's a manual. So did she have to order that or

is that like or did they have him in the country or?

No, Well, there's none in the country.

There's one on the water. They're going to try and get

that one. I think it's been allocated to

another dealership. Whether it's a special order for

them, it's hard to know, but occasionally dealers will bring them in. The Kia dealer actually had a

manual Picanto GT, which was that was very cool and they said no one else has one. We ordered this eight months ago

and they only do them in batches.

They only the the so few are sold in manual, but they actually like build a batch, you know, for to fill the orders once every six months sort of thing on those now.

So they're they're you can still order them, but at least you can still get them. I mean, you know, all the other

manufacturers basically said, no, you're not having one of those. But even if they've got to order

one especially for it, it'll be October rules not too far out.

Yeah, OK. That's not too.

Bad. Yeah.

So yeah, it was interesting actually going through the process and and yeah, most of us buy second hand cars, obviously because we love our little cheapest things, but yeah, yeah, yeah. But now the last car she bought

was new, so she didn't see any reason not to buy another new one so she could afford it. So what?

Was the previous car she had before all these years.

Well, interestingly, it's a 1985 Honda Accord.

Actually, I don't know many of them around anymore.

No, no, it's, it's pretty rare and it's amazing how small they are compared to I actually tried to get into a Jazz, a manual Jazz. But like a lot of newer cars,

they had that little corner window at the front, like the, the A pillar's come down and there's actually another window sort of at the the base of the A pillar.

And she just found it so hard to see around, you know, compared to the, the, the 80 fibre chords like a fishbowl, you know, like it just looks like in any direction you, you look over your shoulder, you can just see everything.

But new cars aren't like that. Obviously for safety, the

pillars are all thicker and stuff like that.

But yeah, this was this was better from that point of view.

That's awesome. All good purchase.

Yeah, great purchase. Like the fact that she's she's

she's what I mean is, is how old is this lady?

I what have I done on that? I I I did the head unit well I

got the right wiring loom for it and then put it all in.

Found out that it only has 2 speakers in the in the in the dashboard. Like you know in the corners of

the dashboard. You've got your left and your

right, I mean. You've got my left and the

right. I actually had to repin the I

had to repin the harness so that it would like the right speaker wise would be in the right place because it assumes that it has four speakers and it does not. So so I had to repin it and that

was easy. Just take a couple of eyes out

and put it back into the the ISO plugs.

And yeah, I've got very tinny sounds, but I'm just.

I can help you with. It yeah, I've got to, I've got

to get some little foreign speakers to just, you know, give it a little extra something because.

Interestingly that the speakers in the dash of those, I think they're a pain to get out if you can get them out.

Well, yeah, I I was going to be about to say I pulled one of the covers off the speaker grills off and it's like 2 like 8 mil bolts like hex head, not hex head, but just like regular, you know, like bolts. The one the the one closest to

the windscreen is I don't know how I'm going to get that off to like buy a special 88 mil likes, you know, ratcheting spanner with a a bendy head or something because I have no idea there's.

A lot of clearance. I've got a, I've got a thumb, a

thumb socket. So that's.

Yeah, a thumb rush. Sorry.

It's like, it's like, it's like you know the size of your of your, your thumb and your fingers put together.

Right. And it's about.

It's about that high and you can, you can put a thing on it and you can you can turn. It.

clean one, I'd daily that 110% I want I want that woollen interior. I want the old man smell I.

The red one that you sent me. Yesterday, Patrick, I sent a red

manual V6 Camry in the group chat and I think that's got your name all over it. It was like what, 2 1/2 or three

I'd buy that right now. Bad.

part and the yeah, I think I think it wanted to be in the part and installed, but, and I was like yeah, Nah, because that's pretty much half the price of the car.

So I was like yeah, Nah. So I, I went to work work.

Couldn't get on through work. See our supplier couldn't get

them. I called our supplier directly,

our suppliers like, yeah, they, they're obsolete.

We don't do them anymore. Caught a few other places,

looked online. The only other one that's online

that was on eBay, it was $9999 and I'm like that is.

As as it would be. They said sold 15 of them.

I I don't know who who the 15. Wow.

I I I would send that in the group chat that it was.

I bought them during COVID, they were gonna profit here from that. Yeah, correct.

Yeah, yeah, COVID tax. So I always look at Rock Auto as

per David's recommendations. With the Rock Auto, they had one

left in stock and delivered to my door from the states in what four days was 280 bucks? Wow, that's incredible to my

door. Including delivery, so.

That is wild. So yeah, I know.

So I dropped that off to 1 David Prince last night and then he had some, he had some coolant. So so thank you, David for for

chipping in for that. Drop that off to the mechanic.

He's fixed the exhaust. The exhaust is fixed.

So it's now quiet as as an old man's car should be.

So this is this is a Camry V6, Patrick, but by the way, so it should be, you know, it should be quiet, but it should also RIP because Camry V6 is like. They do RIP they do.

That's what my one of my mates had one with and it was his old Nondas car as well. Hand me down and granted, he did

the typical P play thing. He cut off the muffler, he

dropped his whatever so it it sounded shit and he was obnoxiously loud. But when you put your foot down,

I don't know whether it was like a placebo effect or something with a loud noise, but man, that thing would would pull.

And you look, I look at him, I look at the car, look at the speed. I'm like, is, is this really

happening? Like?

This. Car.

Now they're sick cars, man. And they go and they're just.

So everything about them is just perfect.

Simple, basic. Nothing goes wrong with no

electronics on a break. They just run.

You look after it, you'll look after you.

Yeah. It's a Toyota, man.

That's what they're that's what they're good for.

Straight out. So that is that is to be to be

put. Well, I think they might have

put it in today. Hopefully they've like they'll

talk, they'll talk to me the other day about putting it in early this week. So hopefully we can drive that

home at some point soon. Which?

Which would be nice laser. So how this weird noise coming

from the from the back at like a certain residence.

And then I asked David Prince to help me last night when I when I was dropping the thing, I was like, can you just hop in the car? It seems not just me.

And then it's guess what, as soon as the OPS in the car, the noise stops. Of course.

So as soon as you hopped out of the car, I drove off, the noise came back. So I got, I drove down to a

service station and I just cracked it.

So I just pulled the whole back panel off the back of the back of the the. The tailgate.

Tailgate the noise gone. I'm like, OK, so it was it was

it was just rubbing. So I then I then pull over at

the at the at a McDonald's. That was that was the further up

the road reattach. I put I put put some of the

clips off and then kind of like I used my screwdriver head in the car and just just pried him open a bit, put it back on quiet as so I said that was that was an easy fix.

Nice. But I, as you guys know, had my

gearbox done in the car recently and I haven't been super happy with it. It's been getting noisy, it's

been getting louder. So and I thought on that maybe

it's just tight because it's a new gearbox.

Maybe it's it just needs you know, and it needs a bit more time to, you know, to get right. But it feels it feels like it's

getting noisier right now. When he put it in said he's

like, I'm not really happy with the gearbox.

He's like I've test driven it for the last few days.

He's like it just doesn't seem OK, but he's like drive it, see how you go. Now it's starting to crunch and

going into first gear. So I was like, that's not good

because I spent a decent amount of money getting that, getting that built. So I called the place today and

I'm like, hi, you know, I got my gearbox from you guys fixed, you know, a few a few months ago. He's like, Oh yeah, the guy I

could could hardly get any bits for.

I'm like, yeah, that's me. And I explained to him the

situation. He's like, yeah, shouldn't be

doing that. Bring it in next week and we'll

take a free test drive and and we'll, we'll see what we can do.

So he's like, that should be, it should be whisper quiet.

You should be able to hear it. So good to know that it's not

just me. And because my mom drove it the

other day and she mentioned it to me as well.

She's like, is your car right? Like is the gearbox?

I'm not like no, it's I just I don't think it's, I don't think it's 100%. So I explained to him, I put a

new clutch in it and everything and it's, you know, it's pretty much fresh. So he's like, Yep, bring it in.

We'll we'll have a look. So that'll that'll happen at

some point next week. But in terms of my other car,

that's I gave the Fiesta and the Typhoon a bit of a detail clean both of those. And I think, yeah, I think

ask us some questions. First one is from Nicholas.

He asks with no Australian car manufacturing to protect, should we relax our import rules? Good question.

What do you think, gentlemen? Ask question.

Next question. We're being ripped.

I'm presuming he's meaning the luxury car tax.

Yeah. So any tax.

Yeah. All tax.

Does he also mean, like, being able to import cars a bit easier, you know, making making it more accessible for people and having less restrictions on what sort of vehicles you can about? Yeah.

I think he's, I think he was trying to say like we should be more kind of like NZ where they're just like you can bring whatever you want over the board.

It's like not put a wall up like in, in America, you can, you can let it, let it all in. You know, that that's so I think

that's what Moy is trying to say in terms of because we don't have anything to protect. Like, you know, why can't we,

you know, get cars from overseas and now and, and I get that.

And, and I think that that's an important point because for example, like, like to buy a Jag in, let's just say in the UK, the same model Jag in Australia is phenomenally more expensive, you know, like for the same spec and everything.

So, you know, some people were like, well, why would I do that?

You know, that's like, you might lose your factory warranty or, or what have you. But like, that's, I get that how

that makes sense. Like they, they want to get the

best price. They still want the car and

they, they want, and I guess I'd make dealerships more competitive and you know, XYZ. But again, I think that another

issue too is we've got so many car manufacturers in Australia at the moment anyway. So, so that's, that's a, you

know, that's kind of like the catch, like, well, why would you want anymore? We've got, we've got, we've got

1000 Chinese brands here now. So, you know, take your pick.

Yeah. What do you, what do you think,

gentlemen? That's that's do you think they

should relax the laws, you know, completely or, or do you think there should be like a, you know, better come as a, a middle ground? I think they should relax them

like. Yeah.

Since you don't have the Australian market that's, you know, battling against any of foreign, you know, companies like it's a sad to say it's all gone.

So like there's there's no point in having such no high like high walls and like tight security or tax, whatever.

Just let it out, let you know you give give the average consumer more options to buy, more affordable options to buy as well. So just yeah, I think just I

reckon just drop him. I don't know how he works in the

political world. So with everything else but I

don't see any reason why I need to be so tight on at least.

I've got a thought here is that if you if they allow people to import cars, it might drive some more competition for the local importers to sell the cars at a more competitive price.

Yeah, yeah, I agree with that. Yeah.

The only thing is, I mean, they don't have to provide a warranty to cars that people bring in from overseas.

The advantage of buying a if you.

Yeah, if it's a matter of saving thousands of dollars, I suppose people would have to weigh it up.

But. But one of the advantages of

buying an Australian delivered car is that that it's covered by warranty if it's a newer car, If it's an older car that's not covered by warranty, sort of all bets are off, really.

Yeah. But yeah, the Department of

Infrastructure have really opened it up a lot in the last few years. Sort of 2019, they sort of

changed the rules and they're still playing with them all the time. But, and if you get a chance,

it's it's worth having a look on the says register and see what is eligible to import. I mean, there's, there's a lot

of cars on there now that you can bring in from overseas.

There are four different categories that they that you can bring them in. Basically, there's a performance

category, there's a rarity category, there's a environmental category and there's a welfare category.

So if it's a high performance car, there, there is a ratio of of kilowatts or no, it's kilowatts per weight or something. Anyway, if, if, if it's a high

performance car, it could well be on the list already.

The environmental obviously allows you to bring K cars in now and a lot of K tracks on the road now.

You know, I'm seeing them everyday now, but anything also anything electric and hybrid. So a lot of cars that were were

sold you here that you could never get the hybrid version.

A lot of them are coming in now as hybrids, as grey imports.

So they have opened it up and obviously anything over 25 years old you can bring in pretty unrestrictedly now, pretty much whatever you want. So it has opened it up a bit.

If I was looking at new cars though, I don't think I'd want to. I don't think I'd want to go

through the palava of importing something that's not covered by warranty. Yeah, if it's if it's nearly

new, that's. The Then again, how how good is

the warranty? Well, it's better to have one on

than not on a on a on a relatively new car, I'd say.

Transit van. Yeah, case in point, yeah.

I think from what I've seen, like there's a lot of importers just importing, you know, like hybrid Jazzes and all fits as they call it in, in, you know, in, in Japan and stuff.

And like they're bringing them in under that, under that kind of rule and, and that and they're quite popular.

Like I'm seeing a lot, I'm seeing so many hybrids or electric versions or, you know, unique versions or specs of cars that we didn't get in the still with like the Japanese stickers and stuff on them. Oh, that's a, that's a Japanese

one. And, and they've got like on

their licence plate, you know, on the, like the, the, what's it called, the plate frames. Blue triangle.

Yeah, the blue triangle and yeah, also on the plate frames.

Is this that, you know, the important that's bringing them in and selling them. Yeah.

And like for those yeah, I get like that like that that's cool.

And that's that's actually that's actually, you know, really good to have. But with with the with how Japan

is for example, like they're a right hand drive market.

They get, you know, left hand drive cars there too.

Does that could that open the floodgates for some left hand drive cars? So like some American cars or

some some other European cars that we don't get, that'd be kind of cool to have too, so. It's alright for how many 80 odd

million people in Japan? Yeah, yeah, it's not all right

for us. Yeah.

You know, it's, you know, we're a basket case of a country when it comes to that sort of stuff. Yeah.

We're not flexible. There's too much red tape.

There's too many things, too many hurdles to jump.

Yeah, you. Know, and as we've said before

on the podcast, the the market is just a drop in the ocean for most of the big manufacturers anyway.

It's it's almost a, a, it's more of a problem usually to build cars for the Australian market. And.

When the markets are small and getting smaller for each, everybody's market share is just going to shrink as more and more brands come in, from China especially.

It's just amazing. Even back in the old days when I

had the 116 import album, I've had two import Mercedes and the the car I got from Singapore was an absolute nightmare to get on the road and it's a right hand drive car already and I still couldn't get it on the road dude.

Why was that the case? Was that because like?

It had to be ADR compliant, seatbelts, ADR windscreen, ADR crash protection like the sidebar intrusion bars have to be there. They have to check all that.

There's a whole lot of things that I have to go through and jump hurdles to jump through, and even then I wouldn't have been able to register it unless I actually registered as a personal import. Really.

Yeah, OK. That was back in the 80s.

Yeah, I mean, the seatbelts had to be like 5 millimetres wider or something. Yeah, wider, I mean the safest.

Were building the safest cars in the world, Australia had to had the seatbelts. Had to be better.

Yeah, I mean a lot of that stuff's now not, not an issue.

It's it's, it's standardised in internationally, which is good.

And they have done a bit of that, haven't they?

The ADR rules have aligned with Euro and Japanese design, so there's less hurdles to jump. One of the best things was the

the ISO fix seat anchorage points because for a long time the problem of getting cars into Australia was the seat belt of the child safety restraints, which is not a thing in other countries or like so many other countries around the world never even had them. And so any, any imported car or

any car sold new had to have them engineered into them for the Australian market or any import that came in actually had to have them fitted by an engineer.

And that that ran into a lot of money.

Even if you weren't using them. If you said I, I don't have

kids, I don't want kids, you know, like the car still had to have them to be registered. Yeah.

Did does? Does your N1 have isofix?

Isofix, Yeah. Yeah.

So, so, so that that's totally fine.

And that was. That's right.

That's right. That was one of the things that

the question marks when I bought the first one in was whether or not how that would go. Because they've got to have an

upper tether anchorage for the for the straps as well.

But they're in the back of the back of the seat so that the straps just come over the top of the back seat into the back of the back. Yeah.

David, you weren't just saying last time that some cars are A5 seater, but you can only register them as a four seater or something like that? Yeah.

Yeah, that that happened. Yeah, well Honda didn't engineer

the HRV. The current HRV is A5 seater for

Australia and. Was that just because of the ISO

fixed point? It was something to do with the

centre seat belt. But because of the market so

small in Australia, they didn't, they didn't want to make the change in that car because then they would have had.

So I think we're probably the only market in the world that has four seater HIVS. I think every other market in

the world only because they thought well we'll just leave it out of the Australian cars because then we don't have to make it a 5 seater. You know we just registered as 4

seaters. You know what's interesting

about that, David? Like my wife has one and it's

weird because it doesn't feel like A5 seater that was just made into a four seater. They've actually remoulded the

entire rear seat area to become to feel like a four seater.

Which 4 seater? Which for me makes no sense.

They've had to engineer that. They've had to engineer it

anyway, so it's like why wasn't it just be able to?

I mean maybe it was just a cost analysis that they they did and they were like maybe it's just cheaper to mould a new seat rather than create a harness system for 1/5.

Seat, sorry, 1/5 compliant seat belt or something so maybe that's why but yeah, they they still have to do work so it's just weird. I mean again, it's like the

question of why isn't it safe enough everywhere else?

Sorry, why is it safe everywhere else and not safe enough for Australia? Like, we're not sure why we're

so special about it, like. I'm glad we've got stringent

safety rules like that. That's important, but when the

rest of the world are way ahead of us in terms of safety technology and. Stuff.

Yeah, exactly. And they deem it fine.

Why don't we? That for me makes no sense.

And back in the days of Australian manufacturing, I think maybe it would have been a different discussion of, you know, we have our own rules because we have different standards. We.

Manufacture as. A matter of fact.

So we've manufactured certain standards.

So therefore, if we, you know, if we don't, if we bend the rules, then why do we have our have our own rules, whatnot, but we don't have that anymore. So well, yeah, just it doesn't

make sense in that sense. So I think we should be allowed

to import, you know, a car every two years to our locking left hand drive, right hand driver doesn't matter.

But you can't sell. It's going to Yeah, if it's made

elsewhere in the world from a a major manufacturer, it should be safe enough for you can. Can, can you, can you go into,

you know, into Parliament? I'll vote.

I'll vote for. You.

Yeah, Rob's prime ministers. I keep on doing.

A job. Now I keep on saying every car

should be registered but why does the car need to be TAC insured for your injury or someone else's injury?

When you're the driver and you're injuring someone else that that should come with you. So no matter which car you hop

into you should be insured, not the car.

So therefore you should be able to register 5 or 6 cars for a minimal cost but self insure yourself for like indemnity liability. TAC save the country, save

people of fortune. But the country, the Victorian

government won't like that because you'll save too much money. Vote one wrong, yeah?

There was a guy actually in Gibson, wasn't he?

He started his own car party or something.

He he done real well. Yeah, the did.

He sold out. The Motoring Enthusiast Party.

Yeah, you got my vote. Yeah, you got my vote.

And then he sold out. Why not?

Yeah, you got 2. So.

Rob, have you got any left hand drive cars?

No, no, no. Have you had have you had them

over here before? No no I haven't.

No no my my friend has. He bought 4 Mustangs back from

the US or left hand drive and back then when he brought them back he had to get them converted because they wouldn't let him register it as a right hand drive car.

Yeah. So he couldn't get it converted

here in Victoria, it's too hard. So he moved up to Queensland for

a couple of years and converted two of them over there in Queensland because it was easier to get him registered and converted in QLD. So, so he, he took him to, he

took him to Queensland and got it and got it, got him converted there or. He did no, he so he's he's a

he's a mechanic, but he's more he's more of an engineer.

He's very switched on guy. So he actually done all the

conversion himself and got it engineered over there.

He actually converted AVH Commodore with a 253 in it and put a 327 share in it and it looked like it come from factory that was and he done that back in the like in the early 90s.

Yeah, well. You know, very clever liking

mechanically. He's a diesel engineer, a diesel

mechanic. But yeah, anything he touches,

he does a great job. But so.

Was there already an Australian version?

No, no. So he lived in California for

about 7 or 8 years and he was picking up Mustangs there for 1500, two $1000 putting him away.

So he just packed them all in the container when he got kicked out of the country and and he brought him back.

He brought back his Trans Am as well.

He's got a Knight Rider Trans Am.

Yeah, it's just sitting there. So you converted two of them.

He actually, to save money, he couldn't get the high roof container, so he actually chopped the roof off 2 of them.

All right, Yeah. So that those two he turned in,

he bought the convertible conversion kits in the US, all right, and turned them into convertibles.

That's one way to go around. Yeah.

Yeah, so and he done a real good job of that.

You couldn't tell it was a conversion to a from a coop to a convertible. Well, really good.

Yeah. Yeah.

So he done a very good job. I think he sold one for pretty

good money and then he's still got the other three there.

You. Go, Yeah.

So yeah. But there's definitely those

days are gone too, because now you can't even bring a car in without tearing it right down. Getting a certificate saying

it's all clear of asbestos scenario.

Every other contaminant in the world, you know, they have to be thoroughly cleaned and sterilised before you even think about putting them on a boat or else you'll never get your car.

It becomes a nightmare. And that's another problem with

second hand cars too. If they're not cleaned and

sterile, you're going to be up for a lot of money whilst that's being held and cleaned and sterilised.

I mean, I think that happens anyway with most, most imported cars. They have to go through a

quarantine check and clean if necessary anyway, even brand new ones, because new cars that may be manufactured somewhere in close to an agricultural area overseas when they get here.

Yeah, even if it's brand new because they're passing through, you know, areas the way they may be animals, other plants and, you know, like anything can get stuck on the car and then survive the trip over. And then quarantine has to be

like, no, we have to make sure nothing is, there's no contaminants. Yeah, there was, There was a

ship full of Mustangs I believe held up on offshore for months because at some sort of infestation of bugs of some sort or? Something probably stink bugs.

Yeah, and they had to, yeah, sterilise the whole ship and do whatever they needed to do before they even load it onto Yeah, they. Literally fumigate the ship on

the water and then once it's like being tested and clear then they can come into port. That's why, yeah, it's crazy.

Every few years it's they seem to run into trouble with it.

So not as easy to import and if you do a personal import and things that go South it starts costing you a lot of money.

Another friend of mine tried to import 2 motor homes from the US and one of them was too wide too long.

So you have to you couldn't bring it back.

You have to sell that one and then the other one he brought into the country as their personal import.

But he wasn't allowed to bring his second one in as a personal import because you can't bring it to him.

So he had to stay in the US and he converted his motorhome, massive motorhome, very popular. It's like Airstream, one of

those big companies. And he actually converted from

left hand drive to right hand drive in caravan parks in the US as he's drive around US. Yeah, yeah.

This guy, he's a, he was a, a, a logging truck driver.

So he used to drive these logging trucks in, in Tasmania.

Brilliant, brilliant mechanic. He's built motorhomes out of

scratch here in Australia. But he actually converted a

whole, a whole entire bus from left hand drive to right hand drive. Yeah, so.

And he's in his 80s now and he still lives in his bus.

Yeah. Well, yeah, yeah.

What's the way to do it? So hard work.

So to finish this question, do we think they should relax the laws or do we think like or, or or do we or do we think it's just, you know, we've got to accept what it is at the moment?

Our government's too lazy to worry about it.

Yeah, that's that's a good point.

I think that's the reality, yeah.

I mean, I, I think it should be closer to New Zealand, if anything. New Zealand, you know, as I feel

like they're doing it right. They're making so it's a for

cars are affordable for everybody, not, not brand new cars and you know, all sorts of things that people might want to own. They actually have more

stringent on road rules for cars as well.

They have to get cheques every six months if they're over 20 years old I believe. A warrant of.

Fitness warrant of fitness. Shout out to the New Zealand

brothers. So yeah, I feel like, you know,

if they can do that and it's a successful scheme, there's no reason why why we can't do it. We consider them our a, a

brethren and a sister country, right?

So like just doesn't make any sense.

I. Mean And there's an agenda too.

I think the governments want to make it harder to buy a car.

They don't want cars in the city.

They want to keep those cars out where they can and people who do have cars that want to make sure you're, you're paying for it and you know that you're paying for it.

So they're not, they're not going to change the laws easier to import cars or make it any easier, even though they've sort of eased off a little bit because there's no manufacturing here. They had to sort of show that

they're doing something and then they probably took the easiest, easiest path, I would imagine, in what they've done.

You know, they wouldn't have gone through a complex, you know, rehash of the the laws and everything else to, to, for us to make it easier for us to import cars.

That's for sure. That's true, yeah.

No, I think you're right. I think for I think one thing

we've learned from this car talk's up to you, is that you should vote for Rob in the next upcoming election.

No, he's pretty much now everything spot on pretty much yeah. Just even with like he says,

well team is New Zealand similar laws do I can give give everyone else a fighting chance to own a park for a decent car.

So yeah, no, I I agree, I've got nothing else to add on it.

Things won't change because the people that are running it have no clue. Yeah, that is also.

True. They just get handed these

portfolios to look after and they've got no clue about anything. Whether it's a portfolio on

education or transport or anything, they've got no clue, no. They don't.

They just put in whatever they want that they think would make people happy. So it sounds like they're doing

something, you know, So it sounds like, oh, we're making sure these cars that are, we've stopped them because they're not safe, just because it sounds good.

They haven't done any research into it.

It's fine in every other country.

What makes us so special? And interestingly, the

department that handles it all is the department, Department of Infrastructure. That's, I mean, Rover, the

whole, the whole thing to do with the sales register and all the, all the permits and all the things you got to buy or go through the department department and it's hardware to say Department of Infrastructure.

So that always amused me. I thought I would have thought

it would have been transport, but you know.

Anyway, stupid. Well, there you go.

He asked. Hey Maddie and crew, what's the

most underrated used car on the Australian market right now and why? Value for money gems is the

idea. It's a good question.

FG Falcon. Good car.

Good. Car that is it I mean that's

that's a good question it's going to be good value and it's going to be you know it's going to be kind of slept on in terms of like, you know how good how good they are.

I've always said, you know, underrated because but people that no, no, but, but no one else really does accord EUR like they're, they're, they're such a stout car.

Like they, they just, they just work and, you know, they got a good engine, they're reliable, they look good, especially the especially the earlier ones. You know, they they do

everything really, really well. Like what's, you know, what's

not to like? And, and there's still so many

on the road and they're quite affordable.

So I think that's like, I think that's the end.

That's my. You know, parts are reasonable.

Yeah, Yep. You can get them in manual auto

10% with or without, you know a body kit like sort of suits a lot of different people. Does.

Yep, I think. I think they're great value for

money. That's a really good choice,

yeah. Like outstanding value for

money. For like under 10 grand you can

get yourself a cracking car. I bought mine years ago for

seven with 150,000 on it and it was, it was a phenomenal car.

It was, it was great. You know, it was, you know,

heated seats, sunroof, you know, all you need to do is just update your, your, your hi Fi and you're, and you're ready to go. Like you know that that car

still looks modern enough to to to drive for the next year 10/10/15 years. Oh, it's aged beautifully.

Very nicely aged, yeah. I actually loved the FT Civic

sport in with that as well, the four door sport, the the type built cars. We had one of those and and

they're very affordable now. Always score really well in the

crash protection ratings. They're they're really well

built. They've got the K20 again,

manual auto sunroof, had the from 08.

I think they got all the stability control, all the bags, all that sort of stuff. Yeah, I'd rate them the same.

Hondas from that era were really just solid cars.

Yeah. It must have been when the

motorcycle engineers met the car engineers and they just built good cars. That's when they spoke to each

other. I think I think Honda was on

their game like that was selling millions of the bloody cords and civics like they were they were flying at the doors.

That was that was a goody ride like that.

They made some they made some cracking cars.

So Rob, you said FG Falcon. I think I think I think that's a

that's a good buy. Like they're they're you know,

they're reliable. They they work.

Taxis. Taxis, yeah, they're a workhorse

and they're, they're quite cheap these days.

And David Prince has come around to to one of those we're dropping on with like a yeah. Absolutely.

Yeah. Yeah, I think, I think they're

they're a good value for money prospect.

Look, they're not perfect, but they're a good solid car.

They're a safe car, 5 five star end cap rating if that's your thing. And and all the above.

I think they're they're a great car.

You can and from all accounts, like we are, we as good as as good as the barrier is and and we know, we know that's a good engine from all accounts. The the like a really good sweet

drive is the 2 litre EcoBoost 1, which has got a lot of front.

It's it's a lot, a lot lighter in the front end handles a bit better. I you know, I probably, I

wouldn't buy them myself, but I think I'd go like an eco LPR, like a gas one. Yeah, Gas.

One yeah, but again, gas is now getting harder to find so that might be that might be an issue. But yeah, I think, I think

that's AI think that's a great choice for A and you get to find the 10 grand all day long for a really nice car.

I'm trying to think like you. You really did nail it with the

Accord, like it's a really great job.

I think XR5 turbos are still good.

Yeah, I'd agree with you on. That, that's a good one.

If you can score those, the prices are pretty good.

I'd probably lean towards the facelift version.

So I think that's 2010. Yep.

From memory. So just they just look a little

bit cleaner, a little bit more modern that version.

So I'll probably lean towards those as long as it's not really heavily modified or anything. Bulletproof engine then got no

dramas as long as it's maintained like most cars, I think. But yeah, the engines are pretty

strong and that side lean towards one of those I.

Had a lady. Would sound good too.

They sound great. I had a lady come in with one to

work a facelift in blue blue recaros and everything and the body was mounted. But she, she'd, she'd bought it

from like, I think it was a year old, I think, I think she said she bought it from. She's had it.

She's had it 20 years. Yeah, like, you know, getting

getting on 15, it has been 15 years.

I think hers was like a late or 9 or early, early, early 10.

She's like best car I've ever had 200 and something thousand KS on it. She's like, I just I served

recently or really I just had the timing belt done in water pump and she's like, Yep, keeps going.

I don't really want to get a new car.

And and she's like, I know the body's hammered that lives outside. It's, it's been bumped into

everything, but you know, it works and it's been, it's been a great car. I then proceeded to offer her

money for the car, but then she the.

Old logo. Just just the old logo.

I'm like, well, you know, if you wanna get rid of it, I'll I'll give it. Yeah, because like, but she had

every stamp in the book, like, like it was it was unbelievable.

Like she she's like, look, I care for a look.

And yeah, so she I think that's a really good one, Scotty, even even XR5 Mundea is a quite a quite a quite a good thing.

Yep, Like like the rest of the Mondea's in that in that family are terrible, but those ones are quite.

Good. How many Mondea's were there at

The Wreckers the other day? Were there, damn it.

And they were looking mint like there was nothing wrong with them. They just looked like there's.

And all sorts of things. You reckon it was just the

engines just grenaded and they just ended up at The Wreckers?

I think parts on them are like, for the Mondeais in particular, quite pricey. So like, they might have had

like, a small hit and they'd be like, Oh, yeah.

Sort of like the, yeah, the German tux on it, yeah.

Yeah, just just just throw it away.

Just sort of looking at what about a Volvo C30 to T5, the XR5 it's. The same car, yeah.

Same car, 7 grand is 1478. That's a craculate.

I can't show it, but it's Immaculate.

It's on marketplace, it's got the books and everything.

Yeah, that's, that's a cracking car.

Like they're, they're, they're a good car on the financing.

Steels with that and it's. It's only got 196,000

kilometres. And you know, that's the smart

money if you're buying in the XR5 and you or the OR the Volvo, like that's, that's the, that's the smart buy.

It's a bit more luxurious. It's similar, similar price, if

not cheaper in a lot of ways, because not meaning people know what they are. You can get them in an order if

you, if that's your thing, you wouldn't know.

And but, but you know, they, they look a bit more funky.

They're they're a 2 door. We only got the four door XR5

CR, but they're only A4 seater. So that's probably why they're

they're a bit they're a bit of a weird one.

Yeah. So but yeah, that's that's a

really good that's a really good pickup, Rob that that's that's a that's a great choice. So Scotty, awesome awesome with

the. XL5 good good pickup.

With you, Chad. I'm I'm leaning towards like a a

facelifted Mazda 6. So late 2000s, early 20 tens.

Yeah. So second Gen, yeah, second.

I mean, yeah, very reasonable. You can pick them up between

5:00 and $10,000 for, you know, any amount of KS that you choose for your budget. And you know, there's plenty of

on the road. I just think they're just like a

really good absolutely built car and they've lost the test of time and I think they'll just keep on going one of those cars that will just service it and then do the regular maintenance and you're fine. I had one of those second Gen

Maza threes. Yeah, not not sixth straight

Maza 3, I had one. But yeah, they're still similar

car. They've got shared very similar

drivetrain. And yeah, they just go solid car

and they'll just they'll just outlast like say with the one of those cars. They'll stand test of time.

Very, very slept on, very underrated, very slaverish looking. Not many people will know what

you're looking at won't really grab as much attention.

Granted, yeah, parts can be a bit dearer to find for for those cars being with the nature of them being an Opal.

Yeah, Tom, mood and water pump every 80,000 KS Yes, but suspension. But apart from that, like.

Apart from all those things, great.

Engine wise they're quite stout though.

issue to find is trying to find parts.

Like there's not many cars that can do what that car can do.

Like Mazda sixes comes comes close to it.

I think Mazda sixes. I've driven a few Mazda Sixes

and I think as a kind of like a handling car, the Mazda 6, so Mazda's of that generation, they always drove well.

They have a lot of mechanical like grip grip they did.

Yeah, yeah, Like they, they really focused on that whole zoom zoom thing and like they, they really made them drive well, like back to back if I like, I drove them as I drove.

A funny story. I took the I took the the Euro

to to bands, though, and a friend of mine's got a Mazza 6 there and I've driven these Mazza 6 and I and I and, you know, I was comparing the two and I'm like to drive the Mazda 6 is, I think a touch better. But to live with, I'd have the

the Honda all day long because it was just it was the better of it was the better car. It felt better built better

compromise. It had a better engine, the

engine far better. And you know, like the K 24 is

really good. I just think, like I thought the

magic 6 was the was the sweetest steer.

But I mean, that's just that's just being, that's just a bit being a bit wanky. But in terms of, in terms of the

cars itself, I'd have the, I'd have the euro all day.

And it's the right size too. And, and, and that's what I

always say to people like, you know, that that size of sedan it's. That size car.

It's the it's the right size. Like you didn't need.

You don't need a car bigger than that.

You don't need a car smaller than that.

That is. That's right.

That is the IT is the perfect sized car and if we if they would have offered that here as a waggon like they did overseas, I reckon they would have sold a lot, a lot of waggons here.

I think there was a bit of a missed opportunity from Honda not to sell the waggon here. Yes, that waggon I don't think

looks as good as a sedan, but you know, having said that, it's still a waggon and people would like waggons.

The practicality, yeah. So out of all the Hondas, David,

which Honda would you steer away from not to buy that's.

Probably as a second hand car, now as a cheaper car.

Well, when I knew I heard of quite problematic that they had some engine issues. Which Gen are you talking?

Like how? Early, early late 90s, early

2000s. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.

It's funny, I, I talked about this when the, when I first got that 94 accord that I, I really liked it because it bridged the gap. I mean, I love legends and, and

we've had a few in the family. My daughter's first car was a, a

very cheap legend that I picked up through the trade and it was absolutely did not give a minute's trouble.

But I, I always felt if something went bang underneath the bonnet, you know, you'd be in this Doo Doo.

It would, it's very, a lot of plumbing under there.

And but it didn't thankfully, but I always sort of did.

Whereas I think the accords feel more robust and I think that comes out at the euro too. They feel more more durable, I

suppose in a way the legends are beautifully engineered, but but the accords just I think I think we're in in in each generation.

They they were well thought out. They were they used quality

materials and and the like. So I'd I'd probably say the

legend if if I was breast for that reason.

I just felt I've got no reason. Likely our experience wasn't

that we had any problems with them, but there was just a fragility about the was it some wordy to say they're a fragility around the longevity of them, like if they if they if they were serviced properly? By the kilometres.

Yeah, if that was serviced properly, they were fine, you know. And I think that's, I think

that's that car's biggest issue. And I think the reason why

Accords for me stood the test of time better than religion was because people that bought Accords, like they usually middle class you, you usually just said, OK, we'll look after account, we'll get it serviced. Whereas people that bought a

legend, well, initially really looked after it, But then people that wanted, oh, it's a legend. It's a really nice car, but they

couldn't really afford to maintain it and bought them second. And they just didn't really,

they didn't give them the love they needed because they were quite a technical, you know, a lot more technical than a than a, than an Accord. They had a lot more in them than

a, an Accord. And when they went bang, they're

a lot more expensive than an Accord.

So it's not that they were a bad car, like if you compare that to a Range Rover, like, like, you know.

It's. It's, you know.

We're being. We're being very picky with

Honda, you know, like that's, that's very hard to do.

But you know what I'm trying to say, right?

It's. If you're, if you had to, if you

But also I know that they're pretty stout and and if they do go wrong, there's a lot more availability for them.

There's a lot there's a lot more backing behind it, if that makes sense. So I think that's for me.

one that was sold alongside the euro, they had a 3.5 that would

turn off up the Bank of cylinders I think like.

That oh, right. They'd idled out of three.

problems with those. They were rebuilding a lot of

those under warranty and even out of warranty.

I know they were rebuilding some.

So yeah, that's probably the one that would put a question mark with me. But I, I, I wasn't familiar with

any big issues around the Legends, the orders when they got a bit older and people didn't bother taking them to Honda for service, They didn't get the proper servicing because Honda designed the gearbox and they designed the oil to go in it. They just say use this oil and

it'll be fine. And they were.

But it's when people didn't bother changing the transmission fluid and or put the wrong one in, that's when they go.

I've got one more underrated one before we move on the Nissan 350/370Z. I think it's a great sports car,

you know? The bank for Barclays, you

really can't pay that. Insane.

Like you're getting a real drive, powerful, you know, front engine, you know, rear drive, manual gearboxed sports car for under 20 grand. I was going to say, how much are

they now? I'm going to have a look and

see. Like I remember, I, I, I, you

got. A very clean one for under 20

grand now. Like a super clean one.

And you can like I'm going to be seeing, you know, OK ish.

cheap, affordable sports car that you can take to a track day that you can, you know, you can have a bit of fun with on the weekends and it's not that expensive.

And early three 50s are now pushing getting closer to to that to that club plate, You know, your era.

I think you know that there are a lot less technically advanced.

Well, in terms of technically fragile and and, you know, harder to fix than a than a 300ZX which which which it, you know, you know, which it surpassed.

So I think I think that's, that's that's that's good buying really it it'll be it'll be a car that you should they should really, really, you know, look for.

I think I think that's AI think that's one to watch because like S 2000s are like ridiculous money now.
