The Afterglow / Overcrest Rally Appalachia

I was at Beartooth Pass, which is, I think, 10,300 feet or something.

Then I had my car and it was at the summit and there's a little sign that says

Beartooth Pass and I parked my car and I grabbed my camera and I just started

running up this hill to get the photo.

I turned around and went, goodbye.

It's like I sat down and passed out for, I don't know, probably 10 or 15 seconds.

Good night.

Hey, guys, welcome to Overcrest.

I'm Chris and I'm Jake.

I am so happy to be here.

The rally is done and it's been, we're back.

The afterglow is honestly unbelievable.

It's humbling.

It's unbelievable.

It's no, I didn't freeze.

I was thinking, Jake, that's okay.

Chris is loading.

I don't know, man.

It's, every time we do one of these, it has a different feeling afterward.

Sure.

Not necessarily better or worse or anything like that, but it's just like,

I don't know, what do you think, man?

How do you feel after this one?

It's interesting because now we've done a few of these.

We've done some other events as well.

It's like seven or something.

Yeah.

And so it's, I, yeah, it seems, I understand what you're saying.

Like it's a unique vibe.

Like we definitely, and that's, for that reason, I should say that that's kind of

the whole point of what we're trying to do and the reason we go different places

is to create a unique vibe every time.

And we've always heard to like, oh my gosh, how are you guys going to top this next year?

Can't wait.

Yeah.

And we always have our internal mantra, right?

That I told people too.

I go, we're not trying to top anything or go bigger or, you know what I mean?

It's, how do we surprise and delight?

Yep.

Bring people joy.

And the community.

I called Jeff this morning.

Sorry, go ahead.

I was just going to say, I think we definitely surprised.

And I think there was a lot of delight.

I was surprised too.

You know, I called Jeff this morning and I said, hey, I was on the discord.

And, you know, Kevin Lessick had just posted about his experience on the rally and I'm

in the discord and I'm reading through all of these things where people are talking about.

And I don't even know how to talk about this stuff.

It's, it's, people like this, this was amazing.

It changed my life.

It is, it has helped my life in this way or that way.

And, and, you know, we've heard all the stories over the years of, you know, people have fixed

their relationship with a spouse or a child or a father or a mother.

And I don't honestly know what to say.

You know, I just, I don't know what to say.

And I think people are kind of, I don't know, I think they're just, they're just emoting

how they feel.

I think that's kind of the, is they're just coming.

They're just like, this is how this makes me feel.

And I, and I'm so incredibly happy for that.

But I don't know what to say in response.

I am so, I'm so incredibly happy and overjoyed that people have, are having the experiences

that they have on the rally.

And it brings, I guess, let me, I think I know how to, how to say this.

It brings me, I've been thinking about this a lot.

Well, sometimes you just got to talk things out a little bit.

You know, you think about something in your head.

Well, you're washing your hair is different than talking to somebody about it.

So yeah.

Okay.

I am so incredibly blessed to be able to provide the joy and I get so much joy from seeing that

what we've done and what we've built.

And I think maybe it comes from, maybe I'm not supposed to say that I'm really happy that

we've made other people happy.

Maybe it's just not like something that you're supposed to, you know, like you give somebody

a present and you're like, do you like it?

Do you really like it?

And the person's like, oh, I love it.

And you're like, I'm so happy.

And then you feel good that they like the present that you gave them or whatever.

But it's, it's, it's almost like a societal faux pas and not be happy that you're happy

that you gave somebody the gift.

But I am, I am, I feel fulfilled.

I feel really fulfilled that people feel this way about the thing that we built, that we

all, me, we all built together, our team built this thing.

And we put it together and people come and they have those experiences and they have

it and I, and I love, I personally get a lot of fulfillment out of being able to do

that.

I truly love it.

I love it.

It's, it's the best.

What do they say the, the joy is to give not receive.

And I think that's, that's what this comes down to.

I'm so incredibly happy.

And I want to talk about the whole, we have like, I have some stories and stuff to tell

to you about what happened to me and, um, you know, I'm sure I know you did some things

in some people's multiple people's cars too.

I think you and I both love getting roped into that stuff and everything.

I was like, yeah, someone is like, oh, you don't, you don't have to do this.

You're organizing.

And I was like, dude, this is my happy.

Yeah, this is where I like to be building carburetors on the side of the road.

I understand what you're saying about.

Yeah.

Like when people are like, oh, this was so awesome.

Thank you.

And I, what I would say is, cause you don't want to be like narcissistic.

It could be like, yeah, you're welcome, sir.

Yeah.

That's what I don't want people to think it's like that for you.

And I don't think it is because we didn't put the person and their father together

or the person and their daughter.

We sure we gave them like a reason to come out and spend time in the car together.

But you can say, yeah, you're welcome.

And thank you for like coming out and making this experience for yourself.

Because again, we can't force people to have these emotions.

We can't produce something and say, all right, now you absolutely need to bring your father

and it absolutely needs to be, you know, the most special time in your life.

And you're going to reconnect.

So no, you don't, you can also just have a hell of a good time.

It doesn't have to be profound.

And I think that's a danger too.

You know, we're writing Instagram captions and we're doing things and I'm writing things.

We're going to put together an email for everybody.

I don't want to try to be overly profound about this either.

It can just be thrown around in cars, Chris.

Well, I don't know if I would distill it that much.

Now you're underselling it.

Yeah, I understand.

Anyway, I hope that, I don't know, I just wanted to say something about that.

And it is a really, truly special thing that we do and it will not always be here.

You know, there was, there was somebody who was like, oh man, I'm really sorry.

I didn't get to come this year.

I'm like, that's okay.

You can come again.

There will be more until there is like now like this.

Yeah.

Until there isn't because it does have a shelf life, right?

You know, for, for multitudes of reasons of who knows what.

I mean, I don't see, I don't see the shelf life tag right now.

I can't find it on the bottle.

I don't know when this expires.

You know, this, this expiration date.

Yeah, I don't know.

Yeah, I'm looking.

I don't see it yet.

Who knows?

That might have been it.

That was it, Chris.

Yeah.

You know, that's, there's, there's things that will come and go.

Anyway, there really was a lot of fun this year.

I did enjoy it quite a bit.

We did things a little bit differently where we had the, the, so, you know, previously

night zero has been like a surprise experience this year.

We, we mailed out the slot cars ahead of time, which the Italians definitely bent everybody

over and we didn't get all the slot cars in time.

But no, we didn't, which forced some people to build them on site, which was, I also thought

that was a really cool kind of component of it.

Like I'm sure some people were like, I wish I would have the opportunity to do this ahead

of time.

Sure.

Sorry.

But I thought it was really cool being able to see people right there, like actually working

on stuff and kind of working together on it and like, wait, how do I do this?

And they're all helping each other.

Yeah.

And who knew that our, our guy RJ was like a, you know, a slot car aficionado.

I won't even tell you how much money he told me he has wrapped under slot cars.

I was like RJ, that is the nerdiest large expense.

Four figure expense I've ever heard of.

And, you know, Hagerty helped put this together.

They're awesome.

Yeah.

And I went a little overboard and I wish I could show you, but my 9-Eleven broke down

and we'll get into that later.

So it's not here, but I ended up buying like two 9-17, a box set of these slot car things.

I saw that.

I've got one in the house that I have that's like a old Mercedes C-Class race car thing.

And I bought a 190-E thing and just you know what I got out over it.

Do you know what I got?

A broken 2002.

Okay.

So as you all know, Jake, I think it's in, it's in my folder of photos, Jesse.

You can see pictures of Jake with his 2002 that he's been working on.

A couple of the team members, we didn't have time to buy or build car or build cars.

So we made some purchases for people.

And Jake, because he loves 2002s so very much.

Everyone, everyone asked me why?

So like, we know the story, but why do you hate 2002s?

And I go, I don't hate 2002s.

They hate you.

I would love to have a 2002, but I can't because they all hate me.

There it is.

Yeah, brand new, amazing slot car pre-built out of the box.

And it was basically broken immediately because of course it was.

Mr. Producer, you have to stop sharing.

I can't see Jake anymore.

No, that's sad, but that was a great photo.

I did like that one.

Yeah.

So, you know, these guys got me a 2002, which is great.

And then I started to run it and the guys like, oh, because it literally just kept going through a corner

and then rolling.

It would do a roll, like barrel roll off of the track.

Yeah.

I was like, what the hell?

Maybe it's too fast, but it wasn't fast.

It was not fast.

It also made like a crazy grinding sound as it went around the track.

Yeah.

So first of all, the, like the front tiller, I don't, they had a name for it, but it's

like the tab that slots into the slot.

Yeah.

The slot.

Maybe it's the slot of the slot car.

The, the tab, the guy goes, oh, that's too long.

Sometimes you have to like shave them down.

And so I was starting to like shave the damn thing down.

And then I was like, all right, now she's, now she's moving.

But then it was like had a little too much drag.

And then it was making a lot of noise.

And then it stripped out the differential gear.

Yes.

Was that the end?

I guess is a thing.

No, because then you can adjust it and tighten it.

But then like it also kind of was grinding up.

And then I had to, it was just, yeah, a multitude of things.

I think I was working on the damn car more than I was driving it, as can be seen by that

photo.

So only fitting that the 2002 they got me.

Broke down.

Didn't work.

Broke down.

Yeah.

And then it was hilarious though, because so then I was just like, when I finally was

able to get it going again and just ripping this thing.

And our cars were not fast.

No.

There were different brands of these things.

The ones that we got for everyone else were like, were like fast.

They were like top of the line.

Yeah.

Like fast cars, like direct drive.

And then ours, ours were like the realistic looking, like really cool ones, but not fast.

Yeah.

No, they were not fast.

And so.

However, I will say this.

I will say this.

I had a good, okay, go.

I won my, me with my 917, that was probably half as fast as everybody else's slot cars,

which were NSR, like, you know, whatever.

And, well, what we, let me, let me rephrase.

What we did is we let everybody choose what body of car they wanted.

They want a Porsche, McLaren, BMW ahead of time.

I was proud how I phrased this in the ticketing process, which I don't think you even saw,

because I was like, again, we always wanted to be a surprise until they get it in the mail.

And they didn't know they were getting it in the mail.

So the one required question in buying a night zero ticket was what would your child, or

what team would your childhood self have wanted to, or what like Lamar team would your childhood

self have wanted to be a part of or something like that.

And so it was like the drop down was Porsche, McLaren, whatever, blah, blah, blah.

And so it wasn't like a giveaway of what it was.

But based on what they chose, we sent them that body in white or gave it to them when they got there.

So here's me with my old 970.

I bought this box at 917 box set and they're beautiful.

They're so pretty.

Admit it, Jake.

They are beautiful.

Sure.

And so it's a 917.

I didn't see it.

I was busy in the pits trying to get my damn 2002 to work.

So I got this thing going, put it on the track.

And it was like the way that they did this thing was as a first person to 10 laps or something like that.

Okay.

Whoever gets to 10 laps first wins.

And I was slow and steady wins the race.

I beat all of those super twice as fast as my cars just by being more careful.

And the fact that it was slow as hell allowed me to win my heat.

So slow and steady is the tortoise in the hair.

That's absolutely, that's absolutely true.

I didn't, I was so like, it wasn't working at all.

I didn't even realize there was like screens right in front of me that had like lap times.

Yeah.

And they were tracking this.

Yeah.

I had no idea what was going on.

Registration obviously was fun.

We had it at the following day at the Deer Lodge.

Deer Lodge.

Which...

Deer Lodge dining room.

Yeah.

They had on the menu were these 16 ounce steaks.

Which...

Because every steak no matter what you ordered was the size of the dinner plate.

Yeah.

So the thing with the steaks, they were I think 20 ounce steaks.

But some people got like an additional steak with their steak.

You got a side steak with your steak.

So you got a steak and then you got a side steak with your steak.

So that was...

Yeah, you want a steak with your steak.

That was phenomenal.

That place was great.

Do you know...

Okay.

So here's the other thing about that place.

I was sitting with...

I think it was Josh.

He was next to me.

And he was like, all of the steaks out.

And they're like, all right, how do you want it cooked?

And he's like, rare?

And they're like, do you actually want it rare?

Like you want it blue?

Like, he's like, I don't know.

Try to scare me, he said.

And she's like, okay, hold on.

Look at that thing.

Look at that steak, Jake.

Yeah.

And that was like average size of the steaks you would get.

That one didn't have a side steak with it.

So he's like, yeah, like scare me.

I want it like not even...

She goes, all right, we have a guy that literally takes it

and wants it just seared for five seconds on both sides

and served to him.

Like, is that what you want?

He's like, sure, that sounds great.

She's like, okay, but I'm just telling you,

we will do that here.

Like this isn't a place where we're going to like

put the thermometer in it.

And I go, hold on, hold on, hold on, Joshy.

How fresh is this steak?

Because I don't want you puking on the side of the road

or pooping all night, right?

Like, I'm going to help you help yourself.

So I was like, if it's fresh steak, sure.

But if it's been sitting there a while, she goes,

oh, no, this we just slaughtered last night.

Me?

I go, what?

Wow.

It was literally like, yes.

The cow was mooing 24 hours ago.

Wow.

That's really impressive.

I've never had a rare steak.

It just doesn't seem...

Really?

I don't think so.

Medium rare, I do.

I'll do it like a really good steak.

It depends on how they, you know, different places.

There is a specific classification of how it's supposed to be.

Many restaurants fail to get it right.

How so?

I feel like, because sometimes you order a medium rare

and you're like, yeah, that's definitely medium.

Like, it's not.

They're probably scared to get people rare and medium rare.

Yeah, they're scared of it.

They're scared to do it.

Correct.

Yeah, this place, they basically were like, we are not scared.

So what do you actually want?

And then I heard Scott's viewpoint of it as well.

As I said, there were some games that Noakey and had out there

in the parking lot while we were all getting registered.

So they had three Noakey and tires,

and they were in larger and smaller sizes.

And so the whole game was like playing bags

where you'd throw something, try to get it in the tires,

and if you got it in the furthest tire,

then you would get a set of tires.

No, you get entered into a drawing.

You get into a drawing where you could win.

You could potentially win.

That's how they said it,

because they thought a lot of people were going to get it.

Only two people got it in the furthest tire.

It was hard. Yeah, it was very difficult.

They're like, okay, well, we don't even have to do a drawing.

How about we just bring those two up here,

and we'll do rock, paper, scissors.

It is not Overcrest's first rock, paper, scissors.

Who's going to get the award thing?

I know, I recall this. Yes.

And so it was, what do they call it?

Tire, paper, scissors or something.

Anyways, so it was our good friend, Rihanna, who's out there,

and then Scott, who, you know, so they both come up,

and it's very interesting.

Scott is a very tall, big guy, big manly man,

and then Rihanna is, you know, like a smaller girl.

And it was interesting, because I think it was Jeff,

so they're out there, you know, rock, paper, scissors,

and she gets the first one, and basically,

she won it, is long story short.

Yeah, she looked really, really uncomfortable

up on stage. Yes.

Very scared, very uncomfortable.

And so Stephanie went up to her, she's like, you know,

congrats, are you okay?

Like you looked, you looked like really, yeah, uncomfortable

or like kind of like scared or, you know, was that a lot?

I would like to apologize to Rihanna right now

for outing her scam. Oh my God.

So she goes, oh no, no, no, I'm fine.

See, I grew up with brothers, and so I know

if you go up there and look really meek and scared

and small and cringe, then you already have the upper hand.

Because now the guy kind of feels sorry for you

and is off their guard, and so like they don't want

to be intimidating. She's like, so no, no, no,

I was just playing that. We're like, well, it worked.

Like everyone was like, is she okay?

Like, does she not like being in front of crowds?

And she goes, oh, and also, you know,

90% of guys will always throw down the rock first.

She's like, so I know that. So the first time out of the gate,

I already know that I got one, right?

And it's best to three to five.

So, and sure enough, like first one out,

she goes paper right away, got it.

And she goes, and then they're already throwing off

their game now because they're already lower

and they're already uncomfortable because they're trying

to make a girl uncomfortable. She goes, so then it's just,

you know, it's like then 50% of guys after that

on the second one, because they lost with rock,

they think that you're going to do something different.

So they'll either do rock or they'll do scissors next time.

So you do paper and you'll get, and like, sure enough,

she had this whole thing down to a science

and we're like, what?

You were just playing us the entire time.

It's like the meme where it's like, you know,

they're playing checkers and she was playing 40 chess.

100% that was the case.

So I was like, whoa, played him.

And it was so great.

Sorry, Scott. Oh yeah.

Well, and it was perfect because she was like,

oh yeah, as we were leaving for the rally,

like their daily, the Ford Maverick had like a flat

or like had something in it.

And she's like, you know what, Frank,

we're going to win these tires.

And she said that to him when they showed up at registration

and heard that they were giving away tires.

And so she's like, yep, dropped it in the long tire.

She's like, great, I got this.

And then Rock Paper Scissors, she's like, yeah, I got this.

I told you, we're winning tires.

So you and I worked on three or four different cars.

You know, one thing that disappointed me

is that the Volvo did not run very well.

The one that I scouted the rally on and he had it at a shop

and it just showed up not running very well.

And of course, in typical Jake fashion,

he's jumping up and down with his hair on fire,

talking about ignition timing.

Yeah, it's always ignition timing, baby.

Yeah, it's always timing.

It's almost like it's like, you know,

the joke is it's always check your grounds, right?

It's always a bad ground. It's always a bad ground.

But it's true, you always want to check ignition timing first

because it is the easiest thing to check

because it is a known quantity.

It's not only that.

Everyone wants to like fiddle with their carburetors first.

And sure, it very well may be carburetors.

But you can sit there and tweak your carburetors

as much as you want and get it so far wrong

from like far away from baseline that it won't help it

or maybe it'll start to cover up

whatever your ignition timing thing is.

So A, not only is it the quickest thing to check,

it is also always the first thing.

You need to make sure your timing on your ignition,

your just your ignition system in general

is absolutely perfectly dialed in

before you even touch carburetors.

Yeah, because it's a known thing, Jake.

Ignition timing has to be this way

and it never changes.

It doesn't change from elevation

or temperature, fuel pressure, any of this stuff.

It's like, this is your timing.

This is the firing order.

Each cylinder needs a spark.

It's a yes or no thing. Does it have spark?

Yes. Does it have spark? No.

It's very, very, very black and white.

Is it a diesel? No.

This is a diesel.

It's very black and white.

It either has it or it's not.

The timing needs to be XYZ.

It is set by the book, by the manufacturer

that at idle

it should be this much before

top to center or at zero or whatever.

It's very, very regimented.

It's very specific.

So it's something that you can very easily check.

Yes, it is correct or no,

it is not. So you're right.

It is the first thing you look at

because it's a very easy thing to diagnose.

But most people don't.

They start fiddling with other crap.

I know why that is.

We'll get to my mistake later,

but go ahead.

See, always looking at ignition first.

Oh my gosh, you're right.

100%.

I was like, well,

I don't have a timing light.

We found someone with a timing light.

I think it was Mitchell, right?

No, it was Cliff.

Okay.

Cliff had the timing light, I believe.

Yeah, Mitchell did not.

Get the timing light on there

and sure enough,

it was like 10 degrees

retarded.

Overall, it was 15 degrees

off from where it should be.

Which is huge.

That's huge.

An eighth of a turn

on the distributor.

It's a lot.

So we got that going,

and then it ran perfect

right away.

And I think there were some other things that happened with that one

that were outside of the scope of my knowledge.

I think it had some water in the gas tank, too,

which is not ideal.

Outside scope of knowledge,

because then after drivers meeting,

I usually like to be,

especially if I'm driving the van,

last man out from wherever we are,

just to make sure everyone's not

dying or stranded

in the parking lot.

It was first Volvo

and I go over there

and they are under the fuel tank

and they're futzing with the fuel pump

and I thought we had this.

He was like, yeah, it started

bogging out and killing again

and I was like, okay.

I was like, what's the problem?

And then his buddy

comes out from under and he goes,

oh, well, we drained a little bit of the fuel

to see if there was a bunch of crap in it.

They thought it was basically

destroying the fuel pump.

It was getting noisy, which can happen.

He goes, but look,

and you slosh the pan around

and it looks like the oil and water thing

where there's two layers

and it's like, oh, well, that's water in your gas.

That's the first thing

the fuel pump is going to pick up

because it's at the bottom.

Water is heavier than fuel, right?

Or is it the other way around?

Heavier than oil.

So right, yeah.

Is it?

Either way, you can see the waviness.

Well, the oil always is floating on top of the water

during an oil spill.

It doesn't go to the bottom of the ocean.

It's always floating on the poor penguins

and stuff, we're getting covered in.

But is gasoline heavier than oil?

We're about to find out.

Keep going.

Yeah, that's dumb.

So they got that fixed

and then I was like, all right.

Gasoline is 25% lighter.

So yeah, all the water would collect at the bottom of the tank.

At the bottom. Yeah.

That's what I thought, which is why you don't want that

because then it's, yeah, the first thing it picks up.

And I was like, all right, well, it started right up.

It idled nice. It revved out nice.

And I was like, can I take it around the parking lot?

And it was just ripped. It was great.

It was perfect.

And so I don't know if that was the end of it

because I kind of lost track after that.

I think it was kind of hit or miss from there on out.

There was a lot of things that were weird.

The shop rewired the cold start.

Oh yeah, that was the other thing.

The cold start valve apparently hadn't

or the whole circuit didn't work well

because the thermal switch I don't think

was working correctly.

Yeah, the thermal time stitch was not right.

So they wired it to the fog lights?

Yeah.

So we had wired it to key on crank.

So when you're cranking,

that's when the cold start is going.

Which could be a problem.

I suppose if it's hot.

If it got really hot, you'd have to go unplug it

and then you would start it or whatever.

But it worked most of the time.

Hooking it up to a switch is kind of odd.

I mean, none of it's...

None of it's ideal.

So I was like, well, maybe that's...

Yeah, I don't know.

And then you bounced over to another car.

Oh yeah.

And then so we got the Volvo out of there

and then Mitchell was still there.

I was like, oh boy.

And so his cougar wasn't running right,

supposedly.

And I went over there and he had the carburetor

off of the car.

And so I was like, all right.

I know carburetors.

Do you know what the final problem was?

Because I do.

I do not.

We rebuilt the entire four barrel.

Like down to the housing, base plate,

everything off.

He had different gaskets we could put in.

We just inspected everything.

Put it back together.

And it was like meh.

And a lot of it was secondhand

knowledge of what was going on.

But someone told me at one point,

it was like first day when he got there.

That was it. It was night zero.

He was like, yeah, it's just dumping fuel.

He goes, at one point I realized my mileage

was I used something like five gallons

in 30 miles.

Like what?

And so we rebuilt the carb and a couple

things. I thought there was like one or two things

we noticed, but it, no,

I don't know. So we rebuilt the carb and then

I was like, all right, well, good luck.

Bye.

And it ran okay for a minute.

It ran okay.

But I don't know what happened after that.

Because then I think you were dealing with it.

Yes, a little bit.

So I decided for the first time

to drive with people on the rally.

First time I've ever done this.

First time I've chosen to hang out.

I always, I almost don't want it.

It's almost like...

You don't want to spoil it for people?

No, no.

It's almost like the route and the route

that I choose is very, very,

I'm very, very particular about it.

It would almost be like

someone who wrote a play,

like standing there

watching all the people watch the play.

Oh yeah, it's awkward.

It's super awkward.

Yeah, I don't want the real time feedback

and then we were...

I remember just for example, we were sitting in traffic

and I'm like, oh my god, everybody hates this.

This is the worst ever.

Oh my gosh, people are going to hate this.

So I've always kind of avoided that sensation

because I don't want to know.

I don't want to know what it was actually like.

It was probably great.

It was great. People loved it.

It was probably great.

What was strange is I got feedback.

This was the best roads on any rally we've ever had.

A few people told me that too.

And I was like, really?

Because there's some really good ones.

There's some really good roads,

but I'm like, really?

Everybody needs different things out of roads.

Some people like the Utah and the Grandscape.

Some people like the really twisty stuff

like Grapevine Road.

My personal favorite rally for roads

was Arkansas

because they were really, really good.

That was my favorite too.

Really good.

Oh man, they were so good.

Admittedly blend together,

but like Arkansas was...

Well, that's the problem with places with trees, Jake.

They all kind of...

All the trees kind of start to look the same.

Every place that has trees is basically the same.

That's true.

It's Utah and then it's trees.

Anyway, so I went driving

or Oregon is, you know,

you have these different biomes that change

and Utah changes like the...

You know, you're driving in the desert

and then you went up in the mountains

where there was snow and pine.

So you can kind of get like this different

evolution of the drive.

Somewhere like Arkansas and somewhere like

North Carolina doesn't really have that.

The elevation doesn't go high enough.

You're only going to 4,000 feet about.

And that's not enough to get above the tree line, really.

It never really evolves into a different place

where you're like, oh my gosh, look how high I am.

I can barely breathe.

I'm going to pass out and fall off this cliff from here.

You know, you don't get that,

you don't get that feeling.

Have you ever run around an elevation, Jake?

At like 10, 12 feet?

What is happening?

I remember one time

I was on the, I was at Bear Tooth Pass

which is I think 10,300 feet or something.

And I had my car and it was at the summit

and there's a little sign that says Bear Tooth Pass.

And I parked my car

and I grabbed my camera

and I just started running up this hill

to get the photo.

I turned around and it went, goodbye.

It was like, I sat down

and passed out for, I don't know,

probably 10 or 15 seconds.

Good night.

You know what?

And then the screen goes,

Oh yeah, it closes down.

It closes like the black.

And then you get the little circle.

That's what it was like.

And then it was like, when I woke up,

it was like, almost like coming out of

like a little bit of a fog.

It's the only time I've ever passed out.

And then you feel like, you feel terrible.

You feel terrible. I remember Steve

Yeah, turns out you need oxygen.

He's like giving me some Mike and Ikes or something like that.

Here's a little bit of sugar and like,

let's get you going again.

You kind of feel sick after that.

But did you know there's a drug that you can take

that helps you with elevation sickness?

I don't know what it is, but it helps you like

uptake oxygen a little bit better.

Take that Jeff's work. I'll just take this

this drug and be able to bike around

just like you.

You ever see that this dude comes from elevation

and he's like biking everywhere like an absolute

madman at like sea level

at Luft and stuff. I'm like, how is he

able to do that? He's in such good shape.

He literally just trains at elevation.

Yeah, he's basically is the air

must be like Jell-O. Like he's breathing Jell-O

with all that oxygen

at sea level. Anyway, so I'm driving around

with everybody and

I'm kind of self-conscious about this

like, oh my God, everybody's having a terrible time.

No, I was fine.

And we turn finally get

to the start and the bottom

leg of the dirt route. Here's some inside

baseball was

okay, but it was added

to give separation between

the tarmac drivers

and the gravel drivers. So the real

gravel route started on Rainbow Road.

Rainbow Springs Road.

I just call it the Rainbow Road because it's like Mario Kart.

Yes. Which is

the best gravel road I've ever driven

on. I heard that from

several people. It is. And to hear that

from West Coast people

is like a big deal.

So obviously I didn't drive it. Is that

the one because the comment I heard from

different people was like, I've never been on

a gravel road where it's banked.

The gravel is banked. It's

not off camber. It's like it's

cambered for you. Yes, it's wild

and all the fun happens at 20

30 miles an hour. It is so great

like on off throttle. I guys

I can tell you if you're not driving

on gravel in your car, you are missing out

because it brings

the speed of which you are able

to experience the dynamics

of your car down to a level

where you're probably

not going to die if something bad were happening.

It's like you have four times the horsepower

because the grip

and just everything is just I

am so good at driving.

Look at me. And you can drive

with your you can left foot break, especially

in a 911. You can left foot break. You get

the rear end to come around. You can go on off

throttle just a little bit. I love power sliding

just because it's so damn fun.

And that road is it is it's

banked like this left right left

right and it's got to be a solid 15

miles. It takes like

a half an hour, you know, 45 minutes

to get through this road. Absolutely phenomenal.

And then, you know, I drove

with people for a little while and then I just got kind

of fatigued and just from

the stress of other people experiencing

the rounds. I'm like, I got to go and

I was on social. I said, oh, it was was

at lunch and I saw Mitchell was stranded.

I'm like, perfect timing. I'm like,

I'm going to go help Mitchell. I'm out of here.

Not that I don't like

people. I kind of don't like people, but

you know, I like the people that I was with, but

I just I feel

like I'm intruding on their fun

by being around.

I don't know. I just I don't

I don't know. I just don't want to do it.

I just feel like I'm ruining people. Get out

of here, dad. We're playing by ourselves.

Kind of. I know that's probably

people don't feel that way, but I you know, I'm just

projecting, right? Yeah.

So I get up to Mitchell and he's sitting

there with his feet up on his car. He

is in Maggie

Valley, which is basically the end point.

The road. I called him.

This is what happened. I called him while we were at lunch.

I said, dude, how's it going? He's like, I'm just driving

straight to the second day point.

I don't know what's going on. The car is getting really bad

fuel economy. It doesn't run and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

And I'm like, he's like the carburetor.

Something's wrong with it. I'm like, I thought you

rebuilt the carburetor. It's like something's wrong

with the carburetor. I'm like, OK, I believe

you.

I said O'Reilly sells and I'll brought carbs.

Just go buy a new one and put it on.

Just buy a new carburetor and put it on.

He's like, OK, which ones have it? I said they all

have it. Just here. Go to go to this

one. So he goes there and

you know what he told me? He's like, I'm not going

to run Edelbrock trash.

Because he had a Holly on it.

Well, little did I know that

both O'Reilly and AutoZone both carry

Holly carburetors as well in the back.

Sweet.

O'Reilly's got that whole section out front

where it's all Edelbrock stuff.

Yeah, there's Mitchell's

his vehicle. I think there's some if

you go to the folder with Andrew Richie's pictures,

he has a bunch of pictures of us at

the O'Reilly's sitting there.

So I get there and here he is, kicked up.

You know, he's just sitting in his lawn chair, kicked up,

waiting for his car to cool down or whatever it is that he's doing.

And I'm like, did you buy a new carburetor?

Have you put the new carburetor on yet?

No. Why?

Because they're $500. I'm like, that's a lot cheaper

than an engine if you keep driving

with all this fuel getting mixed in with the gasoline.

Exactly. Just buy it and return it

when you get home.

That's what I was saying. Try it.

At least try it. You know, if it doesn't work.

Yeah.

Anyway, so we're fiddling around doing things

and I finally got to talk him into doing it.

And then RJ pulls up in the Barracuda,

which was fun.

He had a lifter tick and he was

thinking that he was going to be able to snake a lifter

out from his

Mopar situation,

which he decided not to do because I guess you have to pull

the intake manifold off.

And there's like, you can see the Barracuda

there in the previous shot.

If you take the intake manifold off, all the dirt

can fall under the engine, which we all

was like, that's probably not good.

So he forego that and then just watched us do stuff.

Okay.

And I'll get to my parable of

fail is coming. Do not worry.

I will tell you all the things

that were

shake.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha.

Okay.

So long.

Finally, we walk. We walk. By the way,

North Carolina has

no provision

for pedestrians on city

streets when there's construction. So we played

Frogger, got over to the auto zone

and found out that the

O'Reilly actually had the Holley. So then

we walk back to the O'Reilly by the Holley

carburetor, put it on, go for a drive.

Drive straight.

You know, there's a little bit of a stutter.

You know, I'm like, it probably just needs a little tuning.

Maybe you need to fatten it up because it's like a

work out of the box.

He had a double pumper carburetor on there, which has

mechanical mains and secondaries.

The one that we bought

had a vacuum secondary.

So it's a little lazier.

Yeah, it's

a little bit of a laser carburetor.

But you can feel that it was good. I'm like, this is good.

This is manageable. You could do the rest of the rally

on this.

And then it acted up a little bit just for a second

on the way back. I'm like, maybe it's just

you chalk it up to something. Maybe you just need to jet

it differently. We get back. We're hanging out.

He's still working on stuff.

Sometime during this period of time,

I had decided and

let me finish.

Let me finish. I'm going to a little bit

Mitchell's story first.

Long story short,

I had, I had asked

and this is, this is not, and I told you so.

But I said,

is your exhibition okay?

Like what's going on? Are you kidding me?

Shut up, Jake.

It's

okay. It's

I think what was happening

and maybe Mitchell

can leave a comment on the episode and you guys

The issue

was yet a spare

pair of points in his car.

So this was

Saturday night. Okay.

So this was Saturday night that I said, dude,

put the points back on.

Put the points back on and

just try it.

What I think would end up happening is his coil was

overheating because there was something going on with the

electronics that was blowing his coil up.

So it would drive fine for a while

and then his coil would heat up

and then not work.

So I had given him an MSD

box.

So I basically said, dude, you need to put

this MSD box on here.

You can run it off the points if you want to.

It has a magnetic trigger on it.

If you want to do that, you can figure it out.

You can run points off this MSD

with the coil

because his ballast

wire was not working. He doesn't have a ballast

wire on it or some other situation too.

But it turns out it's probably ignition

that was the problem.

So I don't know if not having

a ballast wire fried his coil

or... Did he

change this setup

prior? The thing is that it did work great

for a long time.

But I think it's just

you know, after

a point in time, sometimes things break.

And just because it worked, let this be a lesson.

Mitchell's a smart dude. I know he went

through everything and this stuff is

hell and I'm a really smart guy

too and I'm going to go through my story of failure

as well.

So just because you're smart and you know cars

doesn't mean you don't make mistakes and

I'm not trying to rip on Mitchell because

I'm about to rip on myself as well. These things happen.

And

I guess it's kudos to Jake to just check

your ignition first. And you never even

tune carburetors until your ignition is right

and 100% working. The problem is

is when you're diagnosing something like a coil that gets

hot and overheats. It's very hard.

It's hard. You don't really know what's

going on. So at some point you're just

like, well maybe this is all

that's left because you put a new carburetor

on it, it still does exactly the same thing.

It ain't the carburetor.

It's probably your points or your

Pertronics which is

Pertronics ain't what it used to be, boys.

It's not made in the same place that used to be made.

Customer service ain't what it used to be.

No.

I was there for probably a solid

to talk about RJ's situation.

RJ probably is almost home by now

and he stopped in the

middle of South Dakota and picked up a new

differential and put it in because he couldn't tolerate going

55 miles an hour anymore.

Did he really? He did. And this great

shop like let him use their hoist and

and help them put it in stuff. It's really cool.

Yeah. Well, if you're in South the middle of nowhere, South

Dakota, you got a barracuda and you find a shop that works on

old Mopar stuff.

I mean, you're already bringing that they're going to be into it,

especially with what RJ is doing. I rolled his vendors

at our Airbnb. Did you?

Yeah.

Alright, so there's me thinking, gosh,

I'm sitting here for a really long time.

I'm just going to change

my idle air corrector jet.

Uh-huh. Uh-huh.

Which is a really simple process.

It truly is. It should have been fine.

It should have been fine.

And just I want to

clarify right now, Chris,

the car clearly

was operating.

It was running fine.

Well, fine. It had

a stumble.

I don't want to look at my own face anymore, Mrs.

Producer. It's always been there.

It shouldn't be, though.

And I'm like, okay,

there's one thing I didn't change that I could

or I had changed and maybe I'll change it

to something else and see if that works.

So it is a

I'll

make this brief. Each

it's ITB, so each cylinder on my

911 has its own

carburetor. Yeah.

They share, two of them share floats,

otherwise, but that's it. Everything else is

own idle jet, own main jet,

old emulsion tube, own, own, own.

It has its own stuff. Each one is tunable

individually.

So, which, which we'll get

to in a second of like what's happening here.

Um, and

on top of the idle jet

is a very small

orifice that pulls from

atmosphere. And you can

change the size of that. You can

introduce more air, which

in the progression circuit will

lean it out or you can make the whole

smaller above

those idle jets, which will

and idle jet is a misnomer. Let me say

that right away. And you know this

idle jet is

how you do tune your idle, but idle jet is

also your cruising jet.

And it is and it also

there's an overlap and it also handles

the

the transition between

your, your, your

minor circuit and your main circuit.

So I would like to call it the

you know, the

what would you even call that Jake? I guess

idle. So the way I like to look at it

think about a graph

there are, there are only two like

systems in a carburetor generally, right

aside from accelerator, but you have

your, your idle and then

which is like low, we'll call it low

flow is the best way to think

about it because all it sees is flow. It doesn't see

actual vacuum or anything else. It sees

flow. So this is low flow

and then your main is high

flow, but it's not like just like a perfect

like, okay, here's where it stops and then this one

takes over. That's not how it works. It's not

a perfect distinction. So you have kind

bingo. There you go. Thank you. That's exactly what I'm

describing. So you have

these overlaps.

That's correct.

So and the effect

each other. Jake, tell me why

the idle the progression

tell me why

ain't nothing but a heartic

stop right now

so why is the progression circuit

so the progression circuit

is when you're rolling out of the throttle

I'll get to how stupid I am in a minute here guys

but I'm trying to sound really smart

before I sound stupid

so I will let you explain why is the

progression circuit so

difficult to tune

do you know progressive

it's dynamic literally as you're opening

well it's because other

factors play into it right so you're

also using your idle jet air corrector

and that goes through the emulsion tube

in order to supply to the progression

circuit it's way simpler than actually

it's way simpler than as you

open your throttle you're exposing

different ones to it is

because you are drastically changing the speed

of the vacuum that is why

so that the carburetor has to be able

to compensate from the speed of the

vacuum or the volume of vacuum

right so you open up the throttle

the speed that goes through the carburetor

that is pulling the air through the jets

changes very fast and the carburetor

has to be able to adapt to that

so there is systems like the progression

holes that you're talking about that

try to compensate for the change in vacuum

there's also the accelerator

pump that if you're just

like way wide and it can't even

you know the back well that's when you hop

on that yeah you'll hop on it

and it literally is a little hose that

says fuel and it just like

just dumps it in

it literally squirts it in

yes it does

it absolutely does

so I have this idle jet that goes

on top of the other idle

it's an idle air corrector jet on top

of the idle jet there's people that are

not even listening anymore that's okay

well they're waiting to

here's why Chris is stupid though

so I'm like I need to change that

and and rich in that

up a little bit to try and

get a little more fuel in my

because it stumbles yeah but I could drive

around it I could drive the car and you would never

know it was there but I'm like I don't want to

do that I want it to run nice

so I have the kit with me

and I'm bored I'm bored

I'm sitting there I'm sitting around

like I'll just change these quick to

get to these you have to take off the

velocity stacks take

off the top of

the carburetor which holds the float bowls

you pull all of that off

and there they are there's six of them

one for each cylinder so I change them

all out I put it back together

and the did you know

and I change them all out put it back

together and the car will not run

mm-hmm car will not run right

like what is going for one thing I did

notice when it took apart is three of them were different

on one carburetor than the other so I go

aha right I go aha

that's what the problem was one of the

little banks is leaner

or richer than the other so I'm just going to

put it back to stock

and roll with that and see what happens

make sure they're the same because

if you have one side

of your engine that's running in a different way than

the other side of your engine it causes all kinds

of problems whether things are out of sync

if one set of butterflies

is opening more than the other side the other

side will run richer lean

it's just not good it'll stumble all kinds of problems

perfect I've solved

the problem I'm very happy

I sent a message to the group chat

I think I have solved the problem

with my carburetors is what I said

and I got some thumbs up some hearts

you know I'm really really excited

I drive away it's okay and then it

starts going

and it sounds like

a Subaru or a

I don't know it just sounds really

really really bad I'm like what

is going on I don't get it

and in a hindsight I remember

it being like this

every once in a while

around town here

where it's like what is why is it doing that

and then all of a sudden it's fine

but it didn't it didn't click to later

what was going on like oh

and I finally I can't figure it out

so then I go back to the

I'm at the hotel

and that's the picture you just saw I'm sitting there

with Joshy and you come up

and you're like what's going on I'm like I don't

I don't know

so I take everything apart again

to put it back exactly the way it was

before I touched it right so I'm going to put the

old idle air corrector jets back in

so I put it all back together

and I said Jake let's go for a ride

uh-huh

and do you want it do you want to talk for a while

do you want to tell this tell the rest

you were there so you can

yeah from here on out okay we go for a ride and we're like

yeah this is not good at all

it does not sound good

and then you floor it full throttle it sounds great

just start you know that distinct howl just

what okay there it comes on

so why is it like anything progression

we're like fine and then and then it starts

really nice parking lot but wait

it started not working well at wide open

throttle too remember we had it's like

we had nothing yeah you're right so it did

work and then it was like whoa now it won't

work at all

there's it's dead

I was like looking at the map I was like alright

let's don't go back to the hotel

and sit there and rev it the piss out of it

well we were already sitting don't forget we sat on

the side of the road for a solid 15

minutes trying to figure out what happened

and we did source a problem

well yeah so you're a bad storyteller

you're a nice parking lot

we back into the post office no no no

there's very good lights okay I'm going to

I'm going to cut you off because you are

skipping a very important part of the story

right when you took the top pad of the carb

off again no

oh so

we're we pull over on the side of the road

it's dark we have nothing and we're trying

to figure out why what's going on and I

start like I got it

running and I started pulling spark plug wires

to try and figure out which cylinder

was dead and I grabbed cylinder

two and I pull it and it's just like

we it's not connected

to anything right remember this

it goes we and I pull it out and I'm

like the order of that I'm like what's going on

and I and I'm trying to like

put the spark plug in and 9-elevens

are so frickin stupid with the spark plugs

because it's way deep in there

and you have to like kind of have that

spark plug wire at a certain angle

that the cylinders are offset

they're offset and I'm like

and I'm fiddling I'm like and I'm getting angry

and I'm frustrated I'm like I can't do

this Jake you try to put this spark plug wire

on and then you're trying to put it on what's

going on what's going on I don't

get it so I take a spark plug out of

the bag like a spare plug

spark plug and I take the wire and I try

to push the spark plug on

and it doesn't click it just doesn't and I

look and the and the part where

the electrode attaches to the spark plug

it's like it's like

it's like shoved in and it doesn't

reach anymore yeah and

I'm like what the fuck

it's going it wasn't the carburetor all it was

the ignition oh it was

but so then I so then we

we tried to get out of there break it

ah fuck so then I wrap it with

electrical tape and I put it back

on there and it clicks I'm like okay we're good

and then it runs again but

only at wide open throttle runs

great right and we go to the post

office and then we go to the post office

back it in they got all

the lights at the post office that you could

ever get it's nuclear it's great two

carburetors yeah two carburetors are I'm

like all right and we figured out which one

it was because if the car

is running and I turn off I screw

all the idle screws in on one carburetor

doesn't do anything does nothing

changes no change

no change whatsoever nothing

it's dead like dead the fucking

thing is dead you take it apart

and you go Jay oh

you go oh my god

look I never

put the idle air corrector

jacks back on they were not there there's just big

holes so it was just flat

lean flat lean there's

no fuel in the idle circuit at all

none yeah okay

so I put it all back together again

and

was kind of kind of better

I don't really remember I think

I just went and parked it at that point and then

I worked on it a little bit for that you went

inside I worked on it we went to the meeting

in the morning I rode with right

I rode with you and I rode with Stephanie

and listen to a horrible wheel bearing

make noise which kudos to her to not

losing her mind over

that and I just go

I have I need a spark plug

wire so I get a spark plug wire

from the from the Audi boys which

I owe them a spark plug wire I just

remembered that to our ski brothers

and I got

one from Mitchell who had not

used the spark plug wires because he

ended up not needing them or whatever so

I have a so I go back and I plug

a mercury cougar spark the wire to that hole

which was the one that was broken

and I and I kind of get it running where

it will where it will cruise just

fine but anytime I roll into the throttle

in any way it's really bad

so I drove

I don't know two and a half

hours can I tell you

my perspective of when you were doing this

because you were clearly like you're at the hotel

in the parking lot in the moment doing this right

you don't have concept of how much time

it is whatever I'm

the van is packed and we're like

I forget what I was doing I was waiting

to do something or checking an email

and

it's a good hour

and outside

the door is closed I was there

and

I go

I'm curious when the cops show up

at this point oh it was that bad

it was very loud

and luckily I think most

guests had already checked out

but there was still a lot of people at this hotel

and I was like

I know there's at least one or two complaints

coming into the front desk at this point

and I was like I might just want to leave

yeah the cops

didn't show up no they did not

but I was yeah it was

because I knew you were frustrated too

and so you're just like well it's not working here

let's see a wide open throttle

well I was trying to see if the main

circuit was working without driving right I knew

what you were doing but I was also like

he's in the moment and doesn't

realize that like this may not be the

time or place

hahaha

I got it going

we drove it but it was really bad

really bad and then we

you know we had all the fun at the track

which was fantastic

I had so much fun at the track

with everybody what people may not

know I went around and I started talking to people a little bit

okay is

um we had a

real purse of money at this track

yeah this was

it was not an exhibition

I point to the sign

to people I like yeah this is the overcrest

cup they're like yeah we see it I go no no

prize money it's our cup like we are

putting on this race they're like

it was like a $2,500 or $3,000

purse yeah it was like a real purse

real race and real purse these

dudes were really going for it because I you know

it's a solid amount of money for that track

you know $2,500 or whatever it was

this is the smallest

sanctioned track in the country

for dirt track this is a sanctioned track huh

this is sanctioned

and it's the smallest sanctioned track

in the country which makes the guys love it

because it's very like

um you don't have top speed

but it's a lot of like you're always

you're always turning so here's

my thought on this this was an experiment

so this

back to like kind of rally planning and stuff this was an

experiment so normally we do the film festival

um you should be able to share sound

Mrs. producer when you share stuff

if you click the right box

you should be able to share sound and have things hurt

is

there's there's I think of

the events and what happens on a rally

people people are either

seeing or doing

right so like night zero

was a doing thing the rally is a doing thing

um

the

film fest and the

uh and the track were kind of an experiencing

thing right so these are

these are things you experience they happen

almost they almost happen

to you you're not necessarily participating

in them and I feel like that's what

this was is um

it was but it was a little bit different because the

uh a little bit

more interactive maybe than the film festival you could

still talk and have a good time and talk to people

whereas the film festival which

I think we want to I think we'll bring

that back here

in some form uh maybe next

year I'm not exactly sure

you know what we want to do I've got

some ideas um we've got some ideas for that

because I don't want to let that go it's too special

no but I agree that people were able

to spectate this together

yes and you don't feel like you're ruining

someone else's uh

experience by talking right

like if you're in a movie theater you can't talk

during the movie theater exactly you

can talk because you're not going to hear

anything anyways yeah

exactly so I mean we

gave away an award these these guys really went for

it I think my favorite dude on track was uh

what was his name Flamin

Flamin something his name was Flamin

something and he was 80 years old this was his

second to last race and that was really cool

and we'll have some of these stories came out I know

our uh Flamin Raymond that's it

so these cars do you know how much

horsepower these things had Jake

so it's a

603 cubic inch

it may make 600 horsepower

yeah yeah yeah that's

yep that's a that's a horsepower

per cubic inch that's pretty that's a lot

that's a lot of power

I wonder what it didn't smell like race

I mean I'm sure it's race gas but it didn't smell

like alcohol you know what I mean it didn't

it wasn't alcohol no they don't run

that but it was definitely race gas

yeah like a leaded race fuel

yeah yeah I had a smell to it for sure

it did um I really

enjoyed that that event Gus

the guy that brought the the pig which

uh Goose

sorry Goose brought the pig and he made

his name the pig by the way yeah

we talked to Goose for quite a while I talked to

these guys for quite a while too back there in the pits which was

really fun this I love

I loved that old timer

there you are yeah there

there is me um what I loved

is I was looking at it and I go oh

you got bead lockers

because if you know on a wheel

a bead locker is it literally locks the

bead of the tire onto the rim

yeah so it doesn't peel off

yeah it's big in like off-road stuff

why do the off-road guys run it because they run

no air in their tire and they don't want the thing to

come off the bead basically right

yeah that is all torque like you're trying to grab a rock

and it'll just twist it

the tire especially at low inflation

pop it off the bead but it'll twist

the tire or the rim within

the the tire yeah um and

so I was like oh you got bead lockers but then I'd look at

like a different car and they don't have

bead lockers he goes oh no you're

looking at the wrong side of the car you go

you only run them on the left

side of each wheel so even

on the right side of the car

it has bead lockers but it's on the inside

of the rim because as

you're turning you

will literally peel the tire off of the

rim there's so much grip

and force did you know it's all the sparks too

every time they hit the brakes

yes there's so much

dust and dirt flying up

that it just gets inside

the disc in the caliper and so it just it's a

spark show

it's such a good

thing I really had a lot of fun

putting that on and you know part of the

joy I get is the surprise of this

is like you know

everybody's like what's gonna happen and then we're like

this is what's gonna happen huh do you like it

and I of course get a lot of

joy out of you know

out of that

it was really cool especially

like people come from all around

the country and all walks of life to go on

the rally which is one thing that you know we

pride ourselves on is like bringing community together

and having that diversity and

you know some folks were

from down here or they're from this out

and they grew up with this stuff or even up here

you know we have we have dirt tracks

but some folks are like I didn't know this

was still a thing

like I knew dirt track was a thing

but I didn't know like this is still

and they're like this is the best thing ever

I had someone else coming up to me they go

alright so I started looking

while we were watching the race

this is attainable

I think next year we all show up and instead of

doing the rally we're just going to dirt track race

like we're just all gonna buy these cars

I think it was Matt Schaefer or something he's like

yeah I think I might not do any more rallies

and I'm just gonna become a dirt track racer

I was like yeah okay

well you need is a tube frame

car a fiberglass thing that you can duct tape

together and a trailer to get it there

I mean I don't think in terms of racing it's

pretty attainable I think you can do it

yeah for sure and so

heck of a lot of fun for sure

so uh

go ahead speaking of tires

yeah no we already did tires Chris

but we didn't yeah you weren't there for

that one but uh

we're talking about off-roading and adventure

alright I do want to also throw

throw a thanks out too

so when my car got out to North Carolina

I let Stephanie

who's

cast coordinator here at Overcrest

couldn't do any of this without her as I've said before

I let her drive it

and she hit the brake and as a

driver things always feel different but as a passenger

my car felt sketchy felt scary

she said it felt sketchy too driving it

yeah yeah well I was used a little bit

used to that but I knew it right I knew

that it felt a little bit sketchy

and she's like yeah it feels really sketchy

I'm like oh shit you know

like what am I gonna do here

so I dropped it off

I called up she's like well you should take it to

Eric Lynn who runs Sports Purpose Garage

you should try and I said okay I'll try

he

did not have time to work on my car

did not have time

but took the time anyway

to work on my car to make sure that it was

it was ready to go for the rally and he did

a great job got the car back

and it drove like I'd remembered

when I replaced everything

probably

60,000

hard miles ago

in my head

I just replaced all that stuff

all the front control arm bushings were dead

the trailing arm bushings were dead

all that stuff was all dead

yep it was all dead

the alignment was a little messed up too

but he took a ton of time

out of his work week to

fit me in and I can't thank him enough because

the car drove great

afterward it felt really good

it's hard to align something

when it isn't

it's just wobbling all over

it was super weird it's not fun to drive

I haven't driven the car much in like two years

the weird thing is is that none of it all just kind of

happened all at once

it was like the car went out to Utah

to do the rally out there whatever at the redux

and we found out that

something was wrong with the steering rack

or the U-joint and then from that point

on it was really bad

so I always attributed it to being something

with what was done there

but I don't know

it's strange because like

anyway so my car

the next day after the rally

still was not running I tried

I had to wake up in the morning to go do

some other filming work with somebody

and it didn't

would not run

so I drove it all the way over there on five cylinders

at wide open throttle it wasn't working right either

so I suspect something's going on with spark

who knows what

drove it over in any way because I had to work I had to be there

so it was like a ten minute drive over there it was agonizing

agonizing

and I decided

I'm like I can't

I need to focus on what I'm doing

I'm not fucking with this car anymore

and I need to work so I just

I didn't touch the car once I got there I just left it alone

did the work I needed to do

and

John King who has this super kick ass

Stratos has a guy that works in 911

engines he's like I'm gonna call this guy

and I and I had it towed to a shop

where is he was he

he is in he is in South Carolina

and I'm

having like this weird feeling of

you know

like it's almost like the car is getting

away from me a little bit like the motor blew up and then

Marco rebuilt the engine

and then someone else

redid your suspension and then someone else redid all my

suspension all these things that I did are no

longer what I did and I I'm trying to decide

if I care or not

I'm not sure if I do

I'm gonna send you a picture here so

so is it at the shop now

it's at the shop now this guy's name is canon

and he sends me in it he sends me a text

that goes

he sent me some pictures and then I'll read the text

afterward because I want you to experience what I

experience he sent me these photos

which which

this may or may not work

that's exactly what I did

and then I read the message which says

when your car is giving you a hard time

let this remind you it can always be worse

so I had like the big

I had the biggest

I was like why does he have it down to the cylinder already

and why is it cracked

I think I accidentally showed his phone number

I'll have to bleep out the phone number on that

and the thing just Mrs. producer please

remind me to censor his phone number

it can always be worse

and then it was just this

so it's like it's like

the most horrifying

just everything is broken just destroyed

yeah okay so not my engine

thank god but I was like well yep

that happened again so it didn't even

phase me it was really weird like I was my heart

sunk and I was like okay well yeah you were just like

well done I'm dead

but I'm having like this

looked at it your card you do you know anything

you know no he said it was going to take him

a couple days I'm not going to bother the guy

I don't need it

back till like for a couple

weeks and I could see

when I was I did take a look

before I left for the shoot

on Sunday

morning and I could see

that the cylinder

two and three float

the sight glass was completely

full and I don't know

what's going on there

the if the float is or the fuel

bowls or flowing it'll just run like dog shit

so I don't know why it was

doing that or whatever it ran okay

wide open throttle

I don't just make up

for I don't know level

I don't know I just like I'm done

I'm done I can't deal with this it's just

you're not in your environment

either like I'm not my environment

your tools your shop I would fuck with it

forever don't care oh yeah

but this is like I've been messing with this

for three probably three years

you know when I got the engine back I thought for sure

it was gonna run well

mm-hmm and it didn't

mm-hmm and that

it does bug me

that was never tuned quite well

rank rated wide open throttle made a ton of power

kick-ass motor but it should

I don't should have ran

and it never has since

and if I need to

pay a guy

to make it work

I can't figure it out man

I just can't I don't know what it is

the next thing I was gonna do is just take the PMOs

off and put webbers on there

and that might still be the case I talked to guys like yeah

you might never get it to run right because it's PMOs

it's just how they are and that's you know

great for race cars and wide open throttle

they make a ton of power but they're not

and and a Marco who built

the built the engines credit

their PMOs that's just somehow this just how they are

so he might have gotten as close as it could

but needless to say my next step

was gonna be like I'm just gonna put some webbers on here

and see what happens you know because

I just can't

I can't not drive the car

that's stupid it's too

expensive to sit around and

it's too special to me to just sit around

and never get driven

you know it's just it's stupid

and it does and having it not run right

and act like that

it makes me not want to work on the other things on the car

it's just like I don't want to work on it

it's just sour it's I don't

I don't like the car right now

and I haven't liked the car in years

in quite some time I have not

enjoyed really I did enjoy when I got it back

from Eric and it handled really well this is

this is really wonderful right but the

but the runability thing just

I can't let someone get in and drive it

you know I want them experience how amazing

the car is not have a go

like the second they roll on to the throttle

and they're like what the hell is this

and my excuse is oh well it's a pretty crazy engine

you know it's it's built pretty nuts and

blah blah blah blah I want to have to do that

and I shouldn't have to do that

no there's there's quit

yeah I

hopefully it's like new

plug wires cap rotor ignition

I put a new cap and rotor on it already

okay well the wires we know

are questionable yeah they're very who knows

what the plugs actually look like right now

yeah and then

just go through the carbs and

start like from baseline

right yeah that's what I think he's gonna do he's like

I'm just gonna look at it with some and sometimes

dude fresh eyes fresh eyes I know

seriously there's I remember

I think I don't remember exactly what it was

I cannot cite what it was but I remember

I was having trouble with the Mercedes

and you came over and you're like you pointed at something

like that and I don't remember what it was

it was like such a stupid thing

to like fuck you know just like

something you just you've overlooked because

it you're there your your fresh eyes can always

always be a benefit

yeah 100%

I don't remember that either but where do

you want to take the rally next year Jake

I'm obviously I'm not going to get into specifics

but you know you do it you do

enough of these rallies and you start to wonder

like sure some of that is fun and I did actually

have some fun like chasing people in the van

and they're like oh that thing can actually move I was like

yeah um

do you miss having your 9-11 out there at all

yeah I did but

what I was about to say is

really that's just like a

an aside for me it's

it's this like I explained it

this family this extended family

that I get to see every

once in a while and

it's so special

kind of just starting

back up it seems like old friends

where

no time has passed really you've known them forever

and it's there's some really amazing

people in the community that

really that's what it is all about

and I know so many

of that community

are listening to the podcast

and get to kind of share an experience

with that and

one thing I didn't say is

this was our most eclectic

group of cars

that we've ever had out on an event

yes

it was so damn cool

all the different cars we had

that was my take away

I like that you're actually

it takes time to think about it because there was a lot of cool stuff

but I have I know mine

it was Adam's Cadillac

the big Cadillac

with the manual transmission

and the rally wheels

and the paisley interior

it's so yeah I literally is your grandma's couch

I would pay

$500 to travel back in time

to watch that thing drive down

Rainbow Springs Road

that was

that was hands down

my favorite car on the rally

and any old couples with the owner

he's an interesting dude

and I enjoyed talking to him

we were standing at the dirt track

and I just looked out at everything

he's from Poland

he's looking out at everything and I go

the European mind

can just not understand

and he goes yeah you're right

this type of stuff just doesn't exist

in Europe

that was my favorite car for sure

that was yeah definitely one of the eclectic

ones

man there's so many cool cars

the Frey Mondial did you look under the hood on that thing

no I did not have a chance to

you know it had a custom turbo setup

that was making like all of the power

all of it

I like Mondials to begin with

they're fantastic

and if you open the door

on that thing the floor is so flat

and it's so low just from the factory

it's so weird looking

it's so cool

and then he opens the rear and I was like

oh he's like yeah

this is the low boost setting

it's like

makes 500 some horsepower

if he says if I crank it up a few more

like PSI it'll be like

another 80 horsepower

it's wild

so that was cool I don't know if it was my favorite

because there was so many cool and eclectic cars out there

these cars are

I think probably underrated

Mrs. Producer doesn't know what a Mondial is

so I will pull up this picture

also had a turbo kit on it

and was like wild
