The new iPhone 17 is here! New cameras, faster processor, and still terrible as a dashcam. We talk about why you probably don't want to use it as one, why action cameras don't work that well either, and more about choosing the right tool for the job. Speaking of tools.. Dan got more tools. We know, you're all shocked.

Welcome to the Abant's podcast. I'm Dan. I'm Nick. It's iPhone week. It is. Wow. It's, I mean, I feel like that's a national holiday. It really is. It's like, thank you for giving us $1,200 last year. How about 13 now or whatever? Yeah. Yeah. I am a consumer whore. I will never pay $2,000 for a phone, but to have a phone with two terabytes, kind of a lot of video, a lot of video. Yeah, we're going to talk more about that because it is automotive related in a weird way. We're going to, and this is a discussion from Facebook. I got a lot of questions about that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. What is
the chance now for us to have somebody with the contacts someone else?
didn't know about, and I will be citing Washington Law RCW 46.20.2892. A very good
friend of mine who I work with, we were talking about getting together for some
stuff, we work together in the insurance industry, and he goes, yeah, he's one of
the nicest kindest people ever meet, just so we're clear. Not a career
criminal. And I go, yeah, let's meet up, and he goes, oh yeah, I can't do that
for a couple of days, my license is suspended. And I went, excuse me? And
this gentleman, I love him, but if he didn't have bad luck, he wouldn't have
luck kind of thing. Yep. So according to that RCA law, which was RCW law, which
went into effect January 1st 2023, which I did not know, if you have more than
three separate occasion moving violations in a 12 month period, or four in
a 24 month period, Washington State suspends your license for 60 days. Yeah.
And they send you a letter. Tim did not get the letter. He also wasn't
aware of this. And just so we're clear, this is not tickets in Washington. Tim's
last ticket, he was driving back from a funeral in Minnesota and got pulled
over. And that ticket transferred over and Washington State said, oh, that's
three. And sent him a letter saying your license suspended. He did not get
it. And then trust me, Tim is the kind of guy that dots the eyes and
crosses the T's. So he was pulling out of a gas station and a police
officer kind of pulled him over and said, I pulled you over because
your license is suspended. You shouldn't be driving. And he went, excuse me,
which is it's not a miss. It's not a felony. It's a misdemeanor, but it's
still it's still arrest arrestable offense. He did not arrest him. Tim
knows the funds. But if this happens to you, and I am going off of the
information that I have found on this, you in order to get your license
back after the 60 days, you have to obtain SR 22 insurance for I think
up to 36 months, you have to take an approved safety driving class like
an aggressive driving class. And then you can reapply for your license. And
then during that period, again, after you get your license, if you get pulled
over again, and you get another one more ticket, they can give you another
suspension. So this is something we we are luck in Washington. I thought I'd
say lucky, but not like a lot of states that have points like where you
know like, okay, I'm this many points. If I get another point on my
license, I'm a we didn't we've never really had those consequences in
Washington. Obviously, they do it to people, you know, most of the
people that I know that had their suspended suspended license driver's
license. There's one thing great about Washington, we don't enforce any
laws here. Yeah, unless you have money, unless you have money. Yeah. So
most people I know that have had that will not know but have heard of and
have done something, you know, where they're in court and the judge has
said your license is suspended. And so basically, you know, this is
something to kind of watch out for I know a lot of people, I
haven't had three tickets in
Yeah, I haven't taken a ticket and probably at least joking with him. I
was like, you know, they can only give you the ticket if you stop.
But he's had a lot of smaller infractions. And like, you know,
like a lot of people he's constantly late. And so he rushes
places and he gets he got pulled over. So something to think
about. Obviously, I'm saying it to all of our Washington
listeners, but everybody else, including our all of our new
Scottsdale listeners, reach out or reach out but figure out
what the laws are in your state so that you something like
this can't happen to you like it's snuck up on him, you
know, had that gentleman not pulled him over. He might he says
he goes, I could have been out there. He didn't drive a lot. He
goes, I could have been out there driving for 60 days and not
known it and been illegal. So yeah, yeah, that's a so it through
events. We have a partnership with Jack motto, I believe
still. I don't know if it's still partnership. But Jack
motto is like, yeah, he's an advanced member big time car
into it. It's known that if you do something stupid in a
car in a car, you call Jack. Yeah. Yeah, no matter what
it is, you call Jack. Yeah, he's a great guy. He's a
car enthusiast and stuff happens and, you know, read
between the lines, I know he likes to go into everything, but
your car enthusiasts mistakes are made accidents happen and you
get a ticket, like we're not saying you shouldn't be
responsible or you shouldn't be accountable. But you know,
accidents happen and the impact that has on your driving
record, your insurance, so not worth it. Fight that ticket
tooth and nail, fight those traffic camp tickets to those
are really easy to beat, especially in Washington. So
this should be banned anyway. But yeah, make sure you're
fighting those traffic tickets. Don't let them slide. Don't
take the deferral. Get the lawyer, pay the money up front. It's
so worth it. Yeah,
somebody's better spent with a lawyer way better. And again, as
as people that give out advice on the internet, you know,
because that's a justified thing. We're not condoning doing
anything illegal. But no, things happen. Yeah, accidents
happen. The probably good example if you've listed this
podcast long enough is when is when the people at Park
Playscape Dan and I cobras and that's right, I got pulled
over on my birthday, right? So in case anyone is wondering,
the scariest car I've ever driven was a back draft racing
427 Cobra. I've never been in a vehicle that wanted to kill
me more than that. That says a lot too, with your
experience in Corvettes, especially your Corvette.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, nothing. Awesome car, awesome
experience. Love our friends at Park Plays. Love the
backtrack racing, back draft racing Cobra. So cool. The
cool factor through the roof. But holy crap, talk about
the car that wanted to kill me. Somebody asked me, would
you have driven that car? And I said, yeah, if I bought one
of those, the only thing I'd have to modify is have to put
some humps underneath the steering wheel, so my legs
fit under the dash, right? Yeah, because the carbon, the
carbon fiber was cutting me. That's such a 1% interest
phrase. The carbon fiber was cutting my legs. It's
funny. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So back to the iPhone 17. Yeah,
what's that got to do with cars? What's that got to
do with cars? This started from a conversation I was
having with somebody on Facebook about recording in
cars and cameras. And a lot of people have chosen for
track days and stuff like that, your camera in your phone
is fantastic. It really is a great device. And if you
take off the case, so I'm going to talk about a couple
tips today about recording in your car, not just with
your phone, because but I have done all these
extensively. I've tried so many different things to
record from the car. There's dash cams, of course,
which everybody should have in this state. They always
look so grainy, even the best ones look grainy. Yeah.
So I'll show you there's you want the Sony Starvis 2
sensor. And that sensor in particular is a CCTV
camera sensor. And it's it works better than most. And
the reason a lot of companies go with that is it's
really good for long term recording always on the
sensor itself and the technology behind it
doesn't overheat constantly. So I mean, GoPro's are
great and all that, but they actually don't make
very good dash cams at all. And our friends over at
Vortex radar, who are also friends with advanced, he's
he's in advance, Ariel's his name. So shout out Vortex radar
is local and they are the authority on dash cams and
radar detectors. Period, the guy does more testing than
anybody else on the entire planet, I swear. And we I
always recommend the VFO ones. They're not as cheap as
they used to be that is for sure. But for even the
most basic one they have, which is the A119 is
still out there, still records better than most of
the other ones. It's a good little camera. You can get
built in ones to your car. But what you're looking for is
that sensor, the Starvis two sensor is the one you want,
it does better than average night recording. It's
really durable. And I'm gonna talk about why that's
important. And it's pretty compact doesn't generate a
lot of heat. But the the micro SD card on those is
super important. So no matter what you think about,
Oh, I have a generic, you know, stand this card
laying around nose, you need an endurance card because
flash memory has a light has a shelf life. And if
it's not made for constant recording and constant
looping and constant rewriting, they have a lifecycle
that is short. So if you think about like an SSD
drive, you're constantly writing to it, but it's very
tiny bits, very tiny amounts, recording video takes
up huge amounts of space, even an even an x265
encoding and compression, it's still big. And
it's blocking out these huge chunks of video over
and over and over again, it's a lot of wear on
the flash memory. So you want a specific memory
card for that. There are dashed. Luckily, the market
has market knows this. There are dash cam and
endurance video cards for webcams, security
cameras and dash cams. Belfos video card is
actually really good, the branded one. It's not
cheap. But it's not something you want to skip on
because when you need that crash data, or you
need that video data, you want it to be not
not corrupt and usable. And the resolution
doesn't matter as much as people think. So
everybody knows my brother being a former
Washington State Patrol officer and an accident
investigator. If you have any video at all, it
pretty much shows what happened. It could be
like old, you know, 1998 coffee maker web
cam cam. Yeah, exactly. And it's like that thing
hit that thing. Like that's it. Like that's
all they really need. And so the front and
rear ones are great. So but yeah, it's cheap
insurance. Everybody should have one. I
like said, I recommend the BFO ones. If
you look at this stuff from Linus tech
dips actually out of Canada, did a really
good comparison comparing like ultra high
end dash cams and the cheap BFO was still
better than 90% of the black view and
think where it was like all those other
ones like they're really not any
difference because all using the same
sensor. So I have a question and it might
begin into the ocean that you're going
to get into in a minute. But we had this
issue with the monkeys and this is why
I wouldn't use my phone to record in my
car. Is that something you're going to
get into? Yep. Okay, then I'll let you
just get to it. Here's why you don't want
to use your phone in your car as a
camera. Okay. It does not have a
vibration damping technology in the
device. And if you soft mount your phone
or should I say excuse me if you rigid
mount your phone like most phone mounts
in a car are with the camera on it
will burn out. The image stabilization
goes bad and it blows out the camera
because the image stabilization has to
work in overdrive for all those
micro little bumps that your car
produces. You don't really notice them
but your camera does and it constantly
has to compensate for them. So with you
acting as the gimbal holding your phone
you're taking a lot of that shock out
of the phone. But when it's rigid
mounted to your dash, it's constantly
having to adjust for all that vibration
and it will burn it out and it has
happened to me and they haven't gotten
better about it because that's not
how phone cameras are designed to be
used. Yeah, I was going to say I
don't blame them. Yeah. And so
companies that have thought about
this quad lock for one does a
really good job of having a vibration
dampening mount and when you put it on
your bike or your car or whatever it
feels super soft. Like it almost
feels like it's wrong because it's
like it's like moving around so much.
But what it's doing is saving your
phone from from dying and it does
work. So if you have the right
mount you can use this. But if you
don't it will burn out your phone
maybe you'll get lucky on the road
cars and things like that it's not
as bad. But if you driven over 90
a couple of times you know you're
going to wish you were in Baja mode
for that road anyway. Even though
it's an interstate. Did you burn out
one on the first monkey?
Yep. Because that's where we ended
up with the quad locks I thought.
I had the quad lock rigid mount.
Oh, that's right. You didn't have
the the then. Yeah. And I didn't
think I was like oh this issue is
probably overblown. I'm not. Oh
no. It was not. I totally fried
the phone. Yeah. At least the
camera and luckily I you know
thanks Apple care. They fixed it.
No problem. No questions asked.
But yeah, still it's a good
thing to know. And your phone
does work as a dash cam. There are
dash cam apps for your phone.
But just keep that in mind.
It doesn't have to be quad lock.
But you want a vibration dampening
mount even on your windshield in
your car. And this issue is not
overblown. It does happen very
quickly. And depending on how rough
you're driving or what road you're
driving on. And don't think
because you're on asphalt that's
going to be smooth. In fact the
more like if you're doing really
high speed stuff all those those
small vibrations that are coming
through your nice stiff sport
suspension or destroying your phone
camera. Also having a phone on
your dash. Can the heat
affect it? Yeah. So what happens
in a case because you were talking
about the heat sink with. Yeah.
And so yeah. Good. I want to bring
this up too. So if you if you do
decide to go this route and just
want to do like a lot of track
guys do this. You want to take the
phone case off. It's got to
dissipate as much heat as
possible. I'm curious how that
new iPhone 17 vapor chamber is
going to help. OK. That just
really I was watching that over
and over today. I have no idea
what it is. But it just sounds
cool. Yeah. Completely distilled
water in the phone and probably
like a couple of drops
literally. But it's a really
heats up and becomes a vapor and
then disperses the energy
the heat. Yeah. Through the new
aluminum unibody which is another
cool concept. Car guys get what a
unibody is. And so just so we're
clear people. Dan doesn't usually
get excited about iPhones. No. I
still think I still think they're
a lot of crap in their own way.
No. No. They are. But I'm just
you know. I know I let the
Android people come. Yeah. No.
I still love my Android.
Yeah. But I have my iPhone
because it's easier to transfer
photos. Yep. I message is the
only reason I still have one.
Yeah. But it's yeah.
It'll be cool to see how that
plays out. And there's a lot of
like I said there's a lot of good
dash cam apps and track apps for
your phone. And they can do double
duty. And so that's about
finding the right mount. Yes.
OK. It's really important to find
the right amount. And obviously
when you're stopping your phone
is going to heat up the most on
your dash when you're stopped.
But like if you're doing a lawn
drive through the desert or
something like that and you just
you know straight roads and the
sun's beaten through your window
you can overheat a phone.
I've done it when I'm not
recording on my phone.
Right. So yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. And especially like
said especially with a case
though. Yeah. These are the worst
thing ever for phones as far as
heat. They're meant to protect
the outside but not vent the
hot air out. Yeah. Yeah. And
there's art cases. Have you seen
those. So that's just a bumper
that attaches the top and the
bottom and covers the camera
bump and the bottom of the
phone. So if you do a lot of
it like if this is the thing
you want to do a lot if you're
a track junkie or you like to
record from your phone in your
car. Look at one of those.
They're not the most protective
case but they're kind of I say
it. They're
boy. I'm totally out of loss for
words. They're better than
nothing. I would have said
nothing and they're kind of I
like the ingenuity behind them.
I like the idea behind it.
It's got some likes.
Yeah. Come on. Yeah.
So the next time I talk about
is the GoPro thing. So like I
said just before I started
this as a dash cam they're
terrible but they have a lot
of functions dash cams don't
and are they the guys anymore
I feel with DJI and everybody
coming out like GoPro used to
be the GoPro's been in trouble
for a long time. They've been
like on the verge of death for
a long time because well people
just don't buy a lot of GoPro's
anymore. So we're clear I own
like four go brights in here.
Yeah. Yeah. But what they're
really good at is time lapse
if you're doing road trips
they're good for external
mounting. And if you want to
do like if you're off road
guy track guy they can take a
beating GoPro's DJI is
whatever you're using they
can take a beating on the
outside of the car and give you
some really good telemetry.
They have built in GPS
telemetry depending on the
model you go for they can
support an external microphone
and what I did on my waterproof
to and waterproof what I did
on my Gen 2 Raptor and
is I this. Yeah. So I mounted
it on the bumper and then I
used a USB C cord wired to
the battery using a dash
cam USB C cord and then a
waterproof door that's
sealed with the USB C cord
in it. So as soon as I fired
at my truck I had constant
power and then it recorded
full time. But I used I think
it's van true. You have to
check the powering but the
GoPro's and DJI the Osmo's
they don't take a lot of
they don't take a lot of
power. They're very little
power in fact.
I don't know they suck through
the batteries at least the
old ones did. Well you know
they still do but they don't
take about those batteries
just aren't very big plain
and simple. So hugging it up
to dash cam power keeps them
going. Now they again same
thing you need a skeletal
frame because they will
overheat. Were you able to
connect to the GoPro when you
were in the cab of the truck
that was that was enough
distance. Yep. Or not enough
distance I guess. Yeah they
were close enough. That's
what I'm looking for. Yeah
close enough. Yeah. So that's
a great way to do it for your
track guys. And there's
vibration reasons as it gets.
Yeah. Their image
stabilization has been on
point for a while but it's
fantastic. Some of their other
stuff has been you know
DJI has really come out of
no I mean I bought their
drones for years but I mean
they've really come out with
the handy cams and the
Yeah. I've got a lot of DJI
stuff. I've got microphones
the whole nine good stuff
and the ability to hook up
an external microphone can
make your track videos and
your your car recording
videos really next level. Can
hear yourself screen. Yeah. You
can mount that microphone
where you try different
places but you can mount
out of the hood if you want
to hear your turbos and your
playoffs you can put it
toward the back of the car
and hear your exhaust if you
like and you know obviously
perfectly sync with the video
but yeah you can get you
can really level step up that
game of recording and
producing better footage by
playing with the external
mic. I wish one thing I
haven't found yet that works
really well is a good
external wireless mic that
works and they have them
they can do it but you're
asking a lot from the
little lapel mics from
DJI. Yeah I've got it.
Yeah. Yeah those those do
work but you kind of stay
within the ecosystem and don't
be wrong like a Bluetooth
mic is a Bluetooth mic
they as far as connectivity
goes but I have found
unfortunately unfortunately
that the manufacturer
mics DJI camera DJI mic
they sure seem to work a
whole lot better even so
you they're using Bluetooth.
So keep that in mind if
you dive into an ecosystem
you're going to have to
and you. Mix things around
you may get some mixed
results you shouldn't but
you will you will you will
yeah this is no different
than tools or
things like that.
Speaking of which I'll
get to that in a minute.
Yeah.
But yeah that the
action cameras are great for
what they're designed for
dash cams like specifically
terrible for off-road and
track because they have G
sensors and you can disable
them but it's constantly
looping the footage and
they're OK in a pinch
don't be wrong but they're
not performance cameras
like the built in Corvette
one that works pretty good.
I was trying to think of the
ones and I'll have to
look it up the ones that
were in the ranger Raptors
for the oh yeah those
oh I know what you're talking
about the bullet cameras.
It was decent.
Yeah.
I mean the footage was decent
I mean they had good
telemetry and all that built
into it so I was impressed.
I mean I bought the SD card
down to the camera but it
worked.
Yeah.
Yeah the nice thing about the
action cameras to like is
that telemetry the G forces
the speed the RPMs like you
can dial that stuff in and
you can use OBD two
connectors to get that data
from your car right into the
camera.
That's the technology exists
and it's pretty easy.
So you can which
will come to you.
Yeah.
Like yeah pretty cool stuff.
Corvette has a built in one
that I use.
I mean it wasn't very good
resolution and it was a pretty
early attempt at doing the
performance data camera which
comes in the zero seven
package by default
at least in the C seven in
the C eight I think it's
built in standard.
Is it but is there multiple
cameras just the front
camera.
OK.
Yeah.
McLaren that had the
camera packages where there
was one in the dash or
one behind you.
OK.
I was trying to I was trying
to remember.
Yeah.
British electronics.
Yeah I yeah I'm not
going to I was trying to figure
out the name of that camera
but I can't figure it out.
So yeah.
Yeah.
But and then like I said
but don't let that stop you
just your phone a good
mount and a microphone will
get you a long ways to
get started and
that's where you want to
start out with that's a
great place to go.
So you can you can hear the
butt puckering.
Yes.
Yeah.
And it can incriminate you.
So keep that in mind as well.
I also and I'm I'm sure this
is I'm not listening to words.
I'm looking for a legal site.
I always tell people when they
do it when they're going to go
to a class like performers
or something like that.
Record audio in the car
because then you can go back
and listen to the instructions
because a lot of times when
you're in the car and
you're driving even though
there's somebody going left
left you don't hear it.
So yeah yeah go back and
listen to the instructions.
Another thing to keep in
mind if you have an
external camera like the
like I did on the truck
replaceable lenses matter.
You don't have S tech for your
camera.
You can get S tech and have
them put a little one on there
and it'll work pretty well
but you will notice on the
lens.
And so replaceable lenses
like a lot of the newer GoPros
have is a really really nice
option.
I think that's underrated
and you can repair old
cameras if you don't want to
buy a new one you can buy
lenses.
A lot of the aftermarket is
caught up with that stuff
but just keep that in mind.
We don't have S tech for
your camera.
I know how well that would
go if I replace the lens I
put it all back together and
then see the fingerprint
inside.
Right.
Exactly.
That's not for me.
Luckily they just clip on now
for a lot of the new ones.
All of the little fisheye ones
and stuff like that there.
Yeah.
You just replace the standard
lens when you take a nice big
rock to it and you will
off road.
Still fall so close.
Yeah.
Don't lose one of the BDR.
Never got.
I never found it.
It would be pretty good
footage.
Yeah.
When you look at everybody
else's GoPro when we know
where it is.
I just said I want to get
it going up but it's not
the graveyard.
What is that.
What was that called.
It wasn't the beehive.
Beehive washout.
No it was it was.
Oh the the jungle.
The jungle.
The jungle.
It's in the jungle somewhere.
Yeah.
Which is above the land.
Yeah.
Deep deep silt.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So yeah.
The good old days.
I wouldn't be surprised if it
was still alive out there
somewhere but we may never
find it.
Oh it's still there.
I mean it was it was in a
good vented case and it was
on a nice suction cut mount.
I mean I drove over it
several times so I know you
can.
So it's not you know.
Yeah the next thing we're
talking about is mounting
3M double-sided tape works great
but it and the extreme heat
it can come off.
So I prefer a stick on mount
for a car like if you can find
a strategic place to put it
but they have mounts for
basically everything but those
just keep that in mind if you've
had one on there for a while
and you've got one of those
3M double-sided tape mounts
they will wear out.
Where yeah.
It's not the water.
It's the heat.
Yeah.
And I also suggest having
some type of you know
s-tech on your car to
protect the paint in case
you do leave that on there
or if it gets stuck.
Yes.
And be careful taking it off
because you can mess up your
paint protection too just
because that ironically a little
heat gun will help take it off.
Yes.
Exactly.
The other one is the suction
cup mounts and so for the high
speed stuff.
Don't get me started.
Do not put those on headlights.
Yeah.
They can't come off.
They have the for cars you
as much as you probably don't
need more than a single one
for regular street stuff the
track guys you want the three
buck the three suction cup
mount you want the heavy duty
one I've seen them come off
I've seen them fly off at
speed.
They're they become nice
little weapons.
Great film.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So get the three suction cup
mount one.
The they're not cheap but
they're worth it.
If this is something you really
want to get into if it's your
first time out you can usually
just use a single once you
want to go in that fast.
But it's you're still pressing
your luck.
No somebody actually told me I
forgot who it was.
And if if you know who I'm
who I'm talking about and if
you said this to me and I
don't remember your name I
apologize but somebody for
Vance because again I had to
go pro on the headlight of the
monkey and they said probably
the heat of riding and then
the heat of the headlight a
little bit caused the suction
cup to loosen and fall off.
Yeah.
So that's why I said that's
why I say don't put on your
headlights.
Yeah.
So yeah and make sure you
clean that suction cup and
the surface really well before
you put it on overrated.
Yeah.
Overrated.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I think that's pretty much
all I wanted to cover on
cameras but I was just
but seeing the new iPhone
come out I wonder my people
that you can still screw the
camera doesn't make a very good
dash cam.
You know not that we're a tech
show but I think I've seen
more excitement coming out of
the new iPhones than I've
I'm usually seen like I to be
honest I was I was I was
thinking somebody's they were
going to come out with like a
foldable phone which I thought
would be would have been cool
because everybody's doing it now
but we'll have to see.
Yeah.
I mean I don't like the
design is still mixed for me.
It's the big camera bumps
are always ridiculous on all
phones but you know
whatever.
I want that eight times zoom.
Is it really eight times
optical?
You're asking me.
So it's it's it's not a real
zoom.
I was not clear.
Yeah.
So I was not clear from the
announcement if it was truly
an eight times optical zoom if
it was just a really filled in
digital zoom which Apple
is the king of buzzword.
You know crap that doesn't
mean anything.
Sunday Sunday Sunday.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's what was that to
all that buzzword video.
Oh yeah.
Turbo and cabulator.
Yeah.
That's right.
Yeah.
Remember that.
Yeah.
If you haven't looked that up
the turbo and cabulator is a
fantastic video and it's not
the guy who hosts that I don't
know who it is.
He sounds like and looks like
Phil Hartman but it's not.
Yeah.
You bought some new tools.
Oh geez.
Yeah.
So yeah there's two new air
compressors here.
I got rid of I'm I love
quiet tools.
I love a quiet space.
It's peaceful for me.
Yeah but I thought the other
ones you bought were quiet.
No God no.
My old my old compressor I
had a porter cable.
The little red compressor.
It's 12 years old.
I found the receipt.
Oh wow.
Still going strong.
You would have the receipt.
Yeah.
Because it's in my email.
Oh.
Yeah.
Oh okay.
All my receipts go to my
email and always have as soon
as that was an option I was
like put my receipt in my
email and so they just
they're just in there.
Yeah.
12 years old still works
and going strong but it was
just so loud.
Yeah.
And so even though this one
is obnoxiously heavy I
got this new Husky quiet.
It's a little six gallon
150 psi but man is it
quiet.
Like it started.
So what happened is it started
with this damn vacuum.
I got the new DeWalt whisper
quiet vacuum and it's amazing.
Such a slippery slope.
Oh yeah.
Yeah.
I was like man I actually
don't mind using the vacuum
like I can talk to people
while I'm vacuuming like I
can just I use it more
because it doesn't drive me
insane to have it so loud.
So I got that and then I
got I have another shot back
for sale of two shot backs
for sale and then I have
and so I got this new
compressor because I was just
tired of the noise and then
there's this big 25 gallon
craftsman that's in the back
and it's a great compressor.
It works flawless.
Brian's going to take that one
for me.
Speaking of loud and obnoxious
Brian.
OK yeah.
So Brian's going to take that
one from me and then I got
a smaller one because I don't
actually you know I've got
so much electrical tools.
I don't use a lot of air tools
in the shop almost never
actually.
But I wanted air in the shop
so I got this little 10
gallon Husky quiet one.
And yeah the same thing
like turn it on.
I can actually talk while
I'm using it doesn't nice
and it slips under that
stairs way out of the
way. It is amazing.
Like young me wouldn't have
cared how I remember the
craftsman when I had that was
just loud and it spit out
rusty water every time you
used it even from new
because it sucked.
But I mean it was loud as
crap. But I mean the older
you get.
Yep. And I got the remote
drain valve right there.
Nice. So I can remotely.
So I don't have to get all
the way under it.
I can just you just tie that
into the tank and then you
have a nice hose out there
so you can just of course
if you use a lot of air
tools in your shop you can
get automatic vents so
you don't get that rust
build up in the tank.
Yeah. And you can have an
event everybody's going to get
one in one in the morning
just dumps all the air out.
You didn't run lines in the
wall for air.
I did not. OK.
Yeah. I just the more I had
everything to do it.
Yeah. And I just don't use
air tools enough for to
justify it.
I mean with with the
electrical tools from
Dalton Milwaukee like your
Uggadugga that wouldn't get
that we had to use on my
rear shocks to put those
guards on like and it was
we didn't know if it was
going to work like there's so
much power in that that
1200 foot. Yeah.
And it took every 1200 foot
pound. Yeah. Yeah.
I got more tools than that
though. I know I just
got more tools this week.
Yeah. Well was there a sale.
Yeah. OK. That was it was
the Milwaukee battery sale.
Oh how did I miss that.
So I got. I don't need
batteries. I can't store
half the ones I have.
So I got M 12 stuff.
So I replaced my M 12 impact
my little tiny one because
it was my again my M 12 impact
is the first M 12 tool I bought
and I think it's as
at least 10 years old. Yeah.
Works great. I take good care
of my stuff. But no
adjustment on speed or
excuse me no adjustment on
torque and it was
it's pretty big even for an
M 12 tool. So I got the new
fuel M 12 quarter inch
impact which is super tiny.
And yes I have two to walk
quarter inch impacts.
So obviously this one
one's fuel one's not.
Right. I realized how much I
like fuel. Yes.
Exactly. So I got that.
Look at the ads and I'm telling
people this because when I went
into by the smaller I think it
was not the quarter inch but
the quarter is quarter
the snow. Yeah. Quarter the
small one. Yeah. When I bought
that it was on sale and I
realized why it was on sale
because it was not the fuel.
It still works great. But yeah.
And I got the short quarter
inch fuel ratchet because I
had I had one but it was
non-fuel and then I got the
fuel insider ratchet.
The extended reach one which
awesome. That's love that
ratchet on the list.
And so I got I was like well.
So and now I have five
five amp hour batteries for
two two point five amp batteries
and four two amp hour batteries.
OK. Which you keep them in
separate cupboards from the
DeWalt one so they don't fight.
Yes. OK. Yeah. The M 12 ones
have their own little drawer.
All the DeWalt ones are on
display on the back.
He's not wrong. Yeah.
Yeah. I have like I have
10 different impacts
versus you know drills.
I've gotten to the point where
it's it takes me longer to
figure out which tool I'm going
to use. I'm like well that one
will work and that one will
work. But I haven't used this
one in a while and I feel bad.
What I found is that the tools
I go for most are my M for
are the M 12 quarter inch.
I use those more than anything
else because they're lighter
and they're quick like they
just the overall small size
matters a lot.
And when I'm packing for
road trips or whatever I always
have tools with me.
But now with four or five
mAh batteries and you know five
actually I don't know it's all
about lightweight trying to I'm
trying to compact things down
and a lesson I learned as much
as I love my tough system boxes
and the Milwaukee pack out boxes
in a car actually prefer not
have them. I like bags because
I can collapse them down and
they make a better use of space.
And so I've done that.
And so what I've got is a
basically a go bag of tools
and it's got like my my
wrenches are in a roll versus
in a container because I can
roll that down really really
tight and I have gear wrench 120
120 XP gear drive wrenches
and then I have
socket set of course.
Yeah, just I have like a basic
go bag of tools and I've been
really glad I've had that
because I can just leave it in
the bag. I don't have to use
those tools all the time.
I have tools for the shop
and so I just grab this bag
and if I do in a house
project grab the bag on the
house grab it going on the
road grab the bag get on the
road. Super easy.
I've been redoing my
I have a Milwaukee bag that
I usually use that.
But I was very tempted because
Ford has a tool roll.
It's very overpriced.
Yeah, it covers everything I
need in the truck though.
That's why and it would bolt
to the back of the but my
biggest worry is that I would
bolt it into the truck leave
it there and then somebody
would break into my because
with the bag I take the bag
out. It reminds me to take
the bag out like don't get
robbed. Oh yeah.
Don't leave your bag.
Don't leave your LaBoubou.
Those I know those those two
rules in automotive.
So yeah.
So I have another tool set that's
stuck in customs.
It's not here yet.
Stuck in customs.
Yeah. So I literally it's in
customs because I ordered a very
custom tool set from Europe
from Proto tools.
Proto is nice stuff.
It's not. Yeah.
But I found this on like an
insanely good deal and it
is a 100 percent metric tool
set. I'm going to know when
you're sick. When you look at
me you go I paid full price
for something right.
Sean and I are going to be
like we don't have to check
him into something.
Yeah.
So and it comes with that and
it goes from the wrenches go
from eight to twenty one.
Most tool sets that are go
from like you buy you know big
tool sets in a blow molded
case they usually go from 10
to 19.
The sockets are quarter inch
and three eighths no half inch
don't ever need them for a
mode for a mobile set like
there may be times like if
I'm doing suspension I will
bring that stuff with me for
off-road.
But most time I do it was in
a super compact case and
it's got.
See here hex wrenches
torques quarter inch and three
eighths ratchets quarter inch
and three eighths sockets and
then the full wrench gambit all
the way across.
And it was the only set I could
find that had specifically
that and it's specifically
marketed as a metric
mobile tool set for a car.
OK.
Everything else is like a
mechanic set or whatever this
is like the go set and they
knew what they were doing.
And how good of a deal did
you get 150 bucks.
Compared to what would it be
if I was placing it together.
Like I could piece that together
cheaper but I can't get it all
into one case.
That's what I'm just OK.
That's the problem.
Interesting.
Like I have all those tools
why is it stuck in customs.
Because I don't know from Europe.
Oh OK.
The deal was OK.
Yeah.
It's normally two seventeen plus
shipping and the shipping is
where they kill you.
It's like 60 bucks.
So this was 150 on sale with
free shipping and then
immediate market Amazon
immediately marked it back up
to 190 plus not free shipping.
But this thing's been in my
like Amazon watch list for
like three years.
I'm up to see what that looks
like. Yeah.
It's pretty cool.
But like.
It's all about that minimalization
go tool set.
And there's it's like how do I
downsize as much as possible.
And I do that because of cars
like the right.
Do you have different tool
sets for different cars like
the tool bag you have that goes
in the Raptor and the Bronco
was different than the one
you carry in the Audi.
The Bronco one's the big one.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Because like yeah the R8
obviously I'm not going to do
much to have some breaks down.
It's just going to be beyond
not semi-technical know-how
but like beyond my comfort.
You knew what broke like if
you if you saw a line that came
off and you knew you could fix
it you could you know yeah it's
just such an expensive car
to work on.
I will leave it in the capable
hands of an Audi tech who
specializes in that.
But the Bronco in the other
hand and especially because
it's going to be more prone
to damage off road.
I'm going to have bigger
tools.
Well the Audi is more prone
to damage off road.
Absolutely.
True statement.
OK.
Yeah but like the Bronco you
know rock crawling things like
that.
It's I'm going to carry it.
I'm going to carry a big impact
because a perfect example.
So I had a rattle in the back
of the Bronco.
We had a rattle on the Bronco
after Moab.
And after Moab after Moab
we're talking about the one on
the white trail that you were
chasing on the Starlink.
No yeah.
That was my mount.
OK.
Yeah but I couldn't figure it
out and I finally got a
little pressure off the back
of the Bronco and shook it
enough to was like OK I can
reproduce this without driving
it which makes it a lot easier.
So got to hear got into the
truck.
You don't have to strap nor to
the bottom of the truck.
Right.
Exactly.
I have to strap a GoPro under
the truck and leave the
suspension.
Why that works.
That works.
It does work.
Yeah.
And so shaking back forth
found the pitman arm nut
was loose.
Now Ford is smart enough.
Thank God that that basically
can't back all the way off.
Or if it did it'd be a
real locking pin.
There's a locking pin for
the bolt itself that holds
it in place.
So basically even if you lost
the nut you can't lose the
pitman arm.
It won't detach.
Interesting.
Yeah.
Really cool design actually
simple but very effective.
But that nut was loosened.
That was like oh finally
simple fix.
But 156 foot pounds.
Twenty one millimeter nut.
You're not going to find those
things in a regular tool set on
the pinch.
I could put it on an impact.
Any of my impacts are going
to go to 120 foot pounds even
my quarter inch.
So but having that you know
but a 21 millimeter in a
quarter inch is not very
common.
But I have a ultra compact
three eighths impact.
That's super high torque.
I have the highest torque three
eighths impact on the market
because I don't want to carry my
massive half inch and I can
whack that thing with a five
amp hour battery and a three
eighths impact.
It'll probably get most stuff
off.
All the agadugas.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And so as soon as I figured
that out grab the torque
wrench five minute fix problem
solved suspension in the rear
is a way tighter runs way
better now it drives way
better now.
Weird.
Yeah.
Because the pitman arm
is now set.
So yeah.
That's cool.
But yeah I have specific stuff
specifically for the off road
stuff.
I have a ultra compact one for
the monkey on the CRF
and I still have it.
I had the the axle wrenches
and stuff and they were in
aluminum.
And now obviously yeah
aluminum wrench you can't
exactly torque on but enough
to hold the tight just
tight enough to get you
back and then get you to a
proper torque wrench.
But when I'm carrying
stuff good and tight.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's good and tight.
It's all you need.
And then I I have blue
lock tight in every single
way toolkits.
On another tool update as
you know at the advanced
podcast we are huge fans of
the Starlink Mini.
Yeah.
Rome just launched today
a new bracket that takes
the Starlink Mini and mounts
it inside their boxes.
And it goes to the factory
holes because a lot of people
were doing this.
You know a lot of they were
just putting them in the boxes
because they're plastic
and then they're protected.
Nobody knows it's in there
but they now actually have
brackets.
They are not cheap but I
will tell you this.
I say this to the people of
the world that know how to
do these things.
If you looked at them you'd
go oh yeah I could totally
make that.
Yeah but they're out there.
Yeah really printing for the
win. Yeah.
Yeah what else.
All the good stuff.
Yeah.
So S tech for the win again
all that ash we had.
We've talked about this on the
show before and we were
talking about this a long time
ago.
OK but you and I had a
conversation about that.
Yeah.
And it was my impression
that with ashes on the car
and then you try to spray
it down.
If you don't have high
pressure I understand that
but if you it turns into
lie which is bad.
Yes you need high pressure
you'd have you'd need a
ton of ash but just.
Yeah you need a high pressure
or pressure washer.
Also ash is nice but it's
glass.
It's carbon.
Yeah.
It will cut the crap out of
your paint.
Yeah you do not want to just
like drive through your car
wash.
Kate did not understand like
I walked outside and I was
like we were both going and
washing the cars right now
like we're getting we're
getting power washed
everything right now.
So yeah.
Yeah you just need to you
need a power washer.
That's it.
Do not run them through the
drive through even if you
have the beauty of S
tech on your car it's
just really hard on it.
It'll luckily it will self
heal to the point where
those micro cuts won't
well you don't want to go.
You can go through it maybe a
touch list because that's
less yeah but don't go through
the don't you shouldn't be
going through anyway brushed
car wash but especially
when there's ash in the air
like we have had because the
fire that's in our mission
statement on this podcast
don't go through the brushing
yes exactly yeah go way back
to that Metropolitan detail
episode with John Clevin
and you do not go through the
brush car wash yeah I don't
care what you have on your
car yeah do not do that.
But yeah if you have that
ash in the air power wash is
what you need you don't need
a high power one you just
need an annual power washer
will do and just get that
ash off your car by spraying
it off because that is just
like little cuts on
everything it's I also did go
in and pull out my air filter
and and zack him out the box
and I oh yeah I took out my
did it it was time again I'm
changing cabin filters more
on that truck than I've
ever changed anything but
yeah you're using it that's
good no that's my point but
I'm using it in places that
like I said it was when we
came back from Moab it was
so red it was so so red so
yeah so a Borsair brush is
been my best friend so if you
if you don't abort it literally
is Borsair Borsair brushes the
trick to clean toilet paper good
for you good for you yeah I
have a bidet it's 2025 oh you
are the heated seat oh you
blue bastard that's right save
the toilet paper yeah no Borsair
brushes fantastic getting those
little nooks and crannies inside
and outside of your car you
want to use a different one
for each yeah just clean it
really well but yeah a couple
of there's it's right there I
know so right there because
I just trying to get all that
Moab dirt out of the Broncos
never gonna happen no just
trying to get it like so let
me go through the process here
switching topics a little bit so
to get all that dust out on that
ash from the interior compressed
air first which is what started
me down this right here this
coming full circle knowing you
long enough to know exactly how
we got here I was using the old
air compressors like this thing
so freaking loud and I have to
have it on the the six gallon
had to be on the whole time
I'm constantly going through that
air and saying else not much
bigger but it's quite a bit
bigger yeah so it's going through
that air blow all the dust out
first all the windows and doors
open blow all the dust out blow
all the ash out then go through
with the interior cleaner thanks
our friends at griots with the
Boris airbrush get in all the
vents all the nooks and cracks
the seats everything stuff works
this Boris airbrush Bristol brushes
are fantastic and then the
microfiber with the interior
cleaner and that will give you
a really clean in interior
yes I mean I love you dearly
but our friendship has cost me
tens of thousands of dollars
because now I'm like I haven't
had an air compressor in
a long time and now I'm like
I had one no well no I
have the little Milwaukee one
that I do that but that's not
I haven't been blowing out my
interior like that but I
realize that I've been lacking
in the well you live so far away
I know it's a huge convenience
to drive over but I will help
you actually speaking of that
I need to borrow your reciprocating
saw because I inherited a bed this
weekend and it came with really
long bolts that make the bed
sit off the wall and cut the
bolts down and I got rid of my
Ryobi reciprocating saw because
I wasn't using it and then I
bought this bed why I didn't buy
this bed is given to me so
literally within a month but yeah
happy to happy to land
yeah I figured you'd be the guy
that would know where I could
find a good reciprocating
saw so I also have a bolt cut
off tool it might work
might work it's it's just it's
a three inch cut off tool for
rebar but I found that I use it
for bolts up here is what I got
it for dishes on a bed that sits
on carpet in the upstairs
bedroom of I know they're
so good yeah I probably don't
want to light stuff on fire.
Yeah I'm a tool with a car by
bit would also work. I've used
your cut off wheel because we
cut off the bracket for my
my trailer. Yeah, I think
works awesome. It did. Yeah.
Yeah. Oh man. I love
the job. I know. Yeah, I'll
tell you.
I we posted the photo of the
new sign in the last in last
episode looks great, especially
next to the Audi. Yeah, I love
my get enjoy the drive sign.
We're going to get into this
a little bit more but we're on
the hunt for a new car. I
told you that. Yeah, did you
know how he doesn't make the
A four anymore? No, it is
gone. The A five is the new
the new A four. No, yeah,
not that you could tell the
difference anymore anyway. No,
but I was like we were
we've been looking around and I
will go a little bit more into
my search when we figure more
about what we're going to do.
But I was like we were looking
at Audi's and my dad goes,
what about an A four? And I
went and looked and then I
searched like, why can't I
find an A four? And they're
like, how does it make it
anymore? And I'm like, oh,
interesting. So it was a I
will give you the warning
everybody else. It's a great
car. We love the A five,
the S five, especially ours
five. However, the A five
and a seven are two of the
fastest appreciating cars on
the market. They're both in
the top 10. So keep that in
mind when you look at those.
I don't it's sedans in
general, if you just had a
hard time. It's unfortunate
because I like driving a sedan
but yeah. Yeah, I mean,
that's a short list CT CT five
V not going blackwing a S five
probably slant back like like
she had a Q five S Q five.
I know it's an SUV, but
they're fantastic. We have.
So this is the business car
as you always know, but we have
the outback. Yeah. See, it's
funny because my mom's in that
same camp as you. She's thinking
Cayenne. Yeah, I'd be a great
one. I would still say the
S base. The Cayenne base is 88.
That's what I'm saying. I
would go with the S Q seven
over the Cayenne. They don't
need anything that big.
Well, it's the Cayenne S Q
seven, the same size, the
same car. No, but I need
something that I can curve
the I mean, as the
executive vice president of
the corporation since I was
six, I need something I can
carve the canyons with and
I don't feel good. And I'm
lucky. Yeah. Well, I we have
a budget and it's it's
quickly. We had a budget and
we quickly move the budget.
You know, it's a moving
target, but cars are
expensive now. That's five is
a great option. And my dad
is worried. He's as a 76
year old man. He goes, I
don't know if I want to
own a Cadillac. It might
make me look old. I can't
I can't we want all wheel
drive. So I wouldn't go
blackwing. I mean, don't
get me wrong. I would love to
take a Corvette for a four
door Corvette off the lot.
But yeah, that's also $100,000.
So yeah, interesting. Yeah,
cool. Funny. I got a few
messages, by the way, but our
last episode before somebody
said I should get the S 2000,
which may which surprised me,
but I understood. I just
don't think it's gonna. I
think it's gonna hold me over.
I swear. There's why I was
going with that. Like, yes,
you can do it. Yes, it'd
be great. Yes, you would
have fun. It's not. Yeah.
No, I'm I keep leaning back
toward the Corvette for the
bang for the buck. I've also
looked at that. Somebody also
said get a GT four. I don't
think it has enough power for
me. And I'm not saying it
doesn't have enough power. If
only we knew me. Oh, if only
we knew some people that
could change that. Yeah, I
know. I'm sure Clevin's got
like half the parts sitting
in his garage. Yeah, no
kidding. Yeah. So if only we
had a private number of
somebody that, you know,
tubes up Porsches down in
California. Yeah, I have for
here too, actually. No, I
know. I'm just saying like
down that line. I mean, well,
hell, if you're going down
that line, then just I would
just go back to a turbo
market and just go, you know,
GT four RS. So much money.
Okay, then if we're going
to be there and go GT three
RS. I mean, you like your
turbo, but there's a reason
you got rid of it. It
wasn't. Yeah, it's not as
exciting. And I don't think
it's is exciting enough to
be the only person that's
ever said that about a Porsche
turbo. It's super. Yeah, I
know. I mean, I know why
you say it. But yeah, it's
something that doesn't have
enough power. It's nothing
like that. No, tons of power.
Yeah. Speaking of, yeah, I'm
not real happy with the new
Turbo S. By the way, hybrid.
So heavy. Yeah, there's a
lot of weight there. We
talked about that when
they launched it. Remember?
Yeah. Yeah, it's super
heavy. You know, it's
Porsche, it drives great and
all that. But I'm just
like, man, I missed
3,000 pound cars. It's
I think everything's 4,000
now. You just need to get
an e-ray. You know, I keep
looking at that. And I think
Brian was right, though. I
think I would just get a
zero six. I don't need the
all well drive. Okay, just
so we're clear. Brian is a
friend. He's a close friend.
We love him. But at the end
of the day, Brian is a car
salesman. And it's his job
to make you buy the car
you know, you're going to
want. Yeah. Okay, I think
it's going back to the zero
six, especially with the
way they are dropping in
resale value. Yeah, but I
mean, isn't isn't the family
dream to already have a zero?
Oh, no, you she wants to zero
one X, zero one X. I guess
that mine, those are two
different. Probably get one
to honestly are one. Okay,
and I was like, you don't
want to have a zero one and
a zero one X. But zero six
would be. Yeah. And by the
time she got the zero one
X, which would probably be
a year from now, I would
have I would be on the way
out of the zero six. No, I
mean, be real. I think
you should just back a zero
six and Dan's back and
then put it in the garage
next to the Audi and then
we'll just call it the
white garage because we all
know that those cars will
look really good. They would
look really good together.
So the thing is, is you know,
185 new is what I
spec'd out my CO 16. Yeah,
but I guarantee you there
are people out there that
have zero sixes and taken
delivery and have already
traded them in for their
zero ones and zero one
X. I can get about 15,000
back from the GM program. So
there is rebates on those
and but the you know,
they are dropping like
rocks and resale. Yeah,
which is not a bad thing
for me because I have no
problem buying new or buying
used. It doesn't lose the
warranty, right? That's not
that stupid thing. No,
not anymore. Okay. Yeah,
the demand is gone. So
they're just making sure
that's all like you can't
sell it. The warranty
doesn't go with it crap
or whatever. Yeah. Yeah. Okay.
And I'm not like I don't
care enough about the new
interior to mind
whatever. It's nice. Nice.
But I'm going to drive
any better. No, same car.
Different buttons. Who
cares? Different buttons.
Yeah, something people could
say that about the iPhone.
Different buttons drives the
same. Yeah. No, camera
upgrade a little faster.
Good enough for me. I'll buy
one. We'll see what happens.
Yeah. All right. All right.
Well, let's wrap this one
up. As always for the
advanced podcast. I'm Nick
and I'm Dan and don't just
get there. Enjoy the drive.
