Scotty Dog big updates with you my friend.

It's nothing good. You got to take the good with

the bad, Scotty. Sorry, it's nothing good.

Like a rollercoaster in your garage.

OHS. Sional time, yes.

Drains my soul. The last we heard Scotty, the

R31 was finally uncle. Last I heard the Arthur, I was

finally on club plates. It was dry fall and everyone was

rejoicing in the streets. I was too, I thought.

You know what? Basically, the world was just

completely, you know, in awe of, like everything you were touching, Scotty was turning to gold.

Everything was falling in place. It was amazing.

Modest Touch would not the Midas dealer the modest, yeah.

Yeah, and then what happened? And then I thought, you know

what, Sunday, what a nice day to just just get out for a bit of a spin and see how it goes. So it's exactly what I did, went

out for a drive, it did the whole typical where it's always been very rough going from first to second.

But I read about it and everyone's like, Oh yeah, they're always rough going from first to second.

But sends to just hold first for ages and Revs and holds to like 4 1/2 to get to a certain speed and then we'll go bang slamming into second and I thought, yeah, OK and then once it's in second you gotta get some speed up and they don't want drop into third for you. It's like, OK, I'll just have a

go at going on to a Lancefield Romsey Road and I'll just cruise up. Thought I'd cruise all the way

up for Beaver Drive and give it a run there doing 100.

So I'm there going. Getting up to speed didn't take

too long to up to speed, it was alright.

And sitting on 100 and then I'm not sure if it's sleeping or something. And then all of a sudden my

speed will start to drop and I gotta press the accelerator more, picks back up, gets back to 100 again and then I just ease the accelerator a bit and just keeps it there, the speed.

And then it does it again and it starts dropping speed all the way back down, you know, wipes off 8-9 K and I've got my foot back down again and it kicks and goes back up again.

This is weird. It just feels like.

It's falling back. Isn't that that sort?

Of thing and then going and then kind of back this order.

It's just not staying in the gear that I really want it to.

And then I got to Clarkfield. My flight now, I'll stop here.

I'll swing around. Um, I don't know how accurate

the temperature is. It wasn't getting high, but it

was just a little bit above to what I'd normally seen.

So I I sat there before turning around and just did a furry Rev and see how it went. Rev Fine.

There was no hiccups or anything when I just revved it swung around and so driving home and then it seemed to sit fine, it was all good. I was like, oh, OK, this is how

it's meant to feel. Maybe it was just a little bit

rusty. It hasn't really set in fourth

gear. You know in the OverDrive for

God knows how long. Yeah.

And we just cleaned out some cobwebs playing along and then I come to traffic lights and then when I went to take off, which is did not want to take off, it was like it was stuck in fourth it was. Just.

Yeah, just did not want to go anywhere.

Like, what the hell? So Kirk sent along, finally got

to the speed I wanted to, and then turning, and I'm heading back home. And then it was going like even

slower, just not going like and I'll put my foot past 50% throttle and no, no kickback, nothing in the gears that was just staying where it. Was Oh, that's not ideal.

And like, OK, that's weird. And then I planted my foot to

get a kickback, and it did. It kicked back and revved all

the way up, but I didn't move any faster.

I was still doing the same speed.

OHS. Well, that Oh.

And mission no good. I was like, oh, it didn't.

It didn't like that. It was a bit grumpy and then I

kind of coaxing at home and it's just like dude, and it's trying to find a gig when it gets fun, there's like this loud click clunk sound. Hmm.

Trunk, trunk. I'm like ohhhhh God can I get it

home? The home phone reverse works

perfect, so after reverse it back in it was fine.

But what if I put it in drive and I don't use any accelerator?

It will cost fine, but once you kind of want to gear or do something. Post your way around the

streets, Scott. That doesn't.

Work. No, I'm actually happens.

Is that is that an Aussie transmission?

Is it like a like a Borg Warner in it?

It it? It is, yeah.

OK. Could be the.

Those trannies in that R 31, they're not known for being terrible, I don't think. They're often been a bit

agricultural, I know that, like. They maybe agriculture, but

they're not known for being a bad transmission.

That sort of goes time but but yours have done some case, isn't it Scotty? Yeah, I mean, the odometer

stopped at 250,000, so I don't know how.

Any anything beyond 250 on a tranny is you're in sort of good luck territory. You know, yeah.

And then I thought, you know what, I'll put some fresh fluid in it. Maybe that'll do something.

Maybe the gods will shine down on me again so doesn't have a a drain plug or anything. You gotta dump the whole pan.

That was a pain in the arse because some of those bolts are a ball breaker to get to. Hmm.

And obviously safety is important.

So it took me a while to find a good spot for the Jack stands and all that jazz dropped it. And then you saw the picture of

the metal on it, yeah. So there was was there metal in

the in the oil. On the on the magnet.

Ohhhhh yeah. That's fine, but it wasn't about

that thought because you'll normally get kind of metal pasting. It's if you get kind of bigger

chunks is when it's really bad and I think it really had too many big chunks that was very pasty attached to it, but I guess it wasn't as red as it should be.

The fluid compared to the new fluids are dumped.

All that put in fresh new fluid thought, OK, take it for a drive, see how it goes right around the block.

Didn't really make much difference.

Engine heated up again. You know it was like a 10 minute

drive if that felt too hot in the engine Bay and that, but.

That's. I think would probably come from

the transmission being ruined, so there's too much heat in the transmission which is pushing heat into the engine Bay.

Generating, yeah. Yeah, cause it's all connected

cause it runs through the radiator so.

And that radiator and cooling system is OK, isn't it renew?

Your brand new radiator I put in it.

Said, it sounds like it could be.

Yeah, I think the transmission and the torque converter, and that is just staffed, so it's generating heaps of heat while it's flowing through and there's only so much a radiator can do to support cooling That plus the engine itself.

So it's just heating? Up it was a warm.

Day. Yeah, yeah.

It was a bit warm during the day, too.

I mean, like I said, it didn't get to a point where I was like, Oh my God, I gotta turn the car off.

Are you going to fix the auto, put another second handy in or go straight to the manual conversion.

There's absolutely no point in me it's not getting an auto unless someone's got one for like 50 bucks.

Yeah, and then I quickly slap it in or something.

But of men. And we've got everything.

I've pretty much got everything ready for a manual conversion, but it's just a couple pieces I need.

But that costs money and just don't have the funds at the moment, which kind of sucks. That's just like.

You should just stop slip. Yeah, yeah, Denise would bananas

in gearboxes. Yeah, I've heard of that.

You're bananas. And eats put it in a whiny deep

you. Know shut?

Yeah. True.

So all I gotta do, just buy some bananas.

That's right. Yeah, so I.

Disappointing mate. Yeah, so I think because

everything that came with the kit to change it to manual, it does come with a clutch and everything already.

But I thought it probably be smart to buy a new fresh clutch.

Why? Well, I mean, you know how?

You can tell if a clutch is good, you look at the meat.

I guess so does. That they go off.

Well, I was thinking, look, if I if I went and got a new clutch, then I'd have to stuff around and Polish and redo the flywheel too. Yeah, if I keep the clutch

that's already got and the flywheel, I don't have to do anything the flywheel, I can just get the Bang Bang.

Is that sickening? Yeah, I mean, I don't see why it

can't be used. But I like only if you fly the

flywheel would need machining, which you probably already know given this condition, it was pretty clean flow.

Every time you'd machine a flywheel is if you are putting on a brand new clutch. One just always goes.

I mean, you could. Take heat spots and stuff so you

kind of want to start fresh. You could take the flywheel and

the clutch to a, you know, a someone who does gearboxes and say can you just make sure these two are meshing together nicely?

If they had to shave it meal off or something or whatever, great.

But then at least they're they're meshed.

Any any mechanic would just just put their, their their what's called the strategy and be able to tell or they'll just machine with with the you know with these to machine machine break break discs. So shouldn't, shouldn't take,

shouldn't take too long. But yeah, so is it just the

clutch? The flywheel?

They're the only two things that you want to replace and it should be good. Or have you got everything ready

to go? Everything's very good.

Just gotta well, obviously it's got to get some bolts for the bell housing and stuff like that, but you can get those anyway. I've got a whole list of what

size bolts. It all uses the flywheel bolts

and the bell housing bolts. I've got all that.

In terms of ECU, does it run with the auto ECU?

Or yeah, I don't need to change that.

I'm trying to think of anything else I need.

No, I've. I've got.

I've got. Everything comes with all the

lines. It's got the UM Brake Clutch

booster. Let's go.

Everything ready to go? The surround for inside at the

boot. It sounds like you're set.

They sorted then. Yeah, what is weekend taken care

of? If only it was that.

Easy, that's that's all I need. I've got, I've got the tail

shaft and everything. I need the the transmission

cross member. OK.

Because it's the auto one, you've got to make new holes if you want to use the auto. OK, so and is that easily

accessible or? Yeah, there's one made by RB

Factory that make them. OK.

So that's easy peasy. Yeah.

Other than that, that is it. I have everything.

I have the whole kit, it's just an RV 20 gearbox, but it's been all freshened up. Yeah, it'll be fine for for that

power anyway. Yeah, piece of cake.

I'm excited. It's gotta be excited to see it.

But apart from that, everything else is.

OK, gosh, it's just a pain in the butt that.

Yeah. And other news, I guess the

Subaru is up for sale. Any bytes?

No bites, but if I have a look at the searching so far I have 4 saves and 48 views. It's it's something.

It's better than nothing. Yeah.

So it's not the people looking for other self for 6868 hundred which trying to look at some of the other ones.

I'll now just look at other ones that are on car sales and kind of basing it on there seems to be about right with Kilometres and I mean mine comes with at least all the original books and things can prepare to anyone elses.

So people like that. All the books, all the

documents. And not long ago it had all the

rocker cover gaskets and all that.

And I've got the receipts. Sigh.

A lot of car for 6800 bucks. Yeah, don't have to worry about

the twin turbo stuff either, so. Yeah, why not?

Because of the single turbo now. Oh, you converted that.

I was already converted when I bought it.

A lot of people with with those that they they can they had to convert them because the the, the, the, the all the lines like all all the what's called the airlines.

On the airlines the vacuum lines they just cracking have massive issues. So quite a lot, quite.

It's quite often that people, people just single, single turbo convert them because it's just easier and more reliable.

A very common upgrade on that. I didn't know that it's

interesting. Um, Edward, Place with you?

I've been a bit busy. Um, camber, where we got to last

time I spoke to you. But what have I been doing?

The I had a Holden Barina. Do you remember the Barina sold

the Barina. Happy new owner.

That's gone Honda Civic. I still have that 2001 Honda

Civic. It's been dragging from mechanic

to mechanic. Basically it needed a front left

shot because it was weeping as part of the roadworthy items and I just replaced that or I had it replaced.

But then of course when you replace one shocker, the car is a little uneven going over bumps and things.

So I really had to replace the second one and I sort of I thought I might get away with it, but really I should have stopped being tight arse and just done both.

So it's now getting this the front right shock are done as well. So that's still in the wings,

the Hyundai Tucson that I purchased the like the newest car I've ever owned. I think 2021.

I don't think you can get much newer than that.

A Hudson that is in just getting a roadworthy, which it shouldn't need anything. I'm picking it up tomorrow and

then I'll put that online. I should put that on tonight

actually, so that's the next one to go advertised.

I also purchased a 1997 Saab 900 S 2 Door Talladega Automatic Turbo 2.3. One owner, now the Talladega,

according to my research, gets you alloys, it gets you, you know, the colour coded bars and stuff and it's got the rear spoiler and I think that's about it.

So the race, the race, The Talladega before it got.

Delivered. Yeah that's not exactly a

amazing option pack but it's yeah, makes it a little bit nicer than you're playing Jane hubcap model I suppose but that's yeah 2 door in silver and one owner.

You know brilliant service history 2 keys factory mats.

You know it's it's a fine large well looked after car.

So I picked that up Friday and I had sat around for about a year, 3 1/2 not being used. And of course I like to drive

things that haven't been used. And so I pump the tyres up, took

it through the the car wash, blasted all the dust off it and pointed it straight to Bendigo. And I didn't turn it off during

any of that because the battery was totally dead.

And I was Oh no, it wouldn't start again.

So you know, I went home and left it running in the garage and then I then I left it running at the car wash and anyway, by the time I got up to Bendigo 2 hours later, battery was perfect. Charge right up.

No, Drama doesn't. Matter.

Does Samara, But as I was coming into my friend's house in Bendigo, I was doing about 70K or so and a big fat kangaroo came out from the bushes on the left and jumped in front of my Swedish. Except you're kidding.

I slammed on the brakes and to its credit the stab stab WBS worked very well and I ground to a halt pretty quickly.

I did still hit the kangaroo in the middle of the front bar.

He then came up onto the bonnet and then sort of rolled off the driver side and and and out into the Bush and hopped away.

Thankfully, hopped away and didn't like it.

Did you get his insurance details that?

Scene. That's outrageous.

My first thought, Alan, was that's a $600.00 car.

What are we worried about? You know, like this is a cheap

they didn't pay a lot for this tub anyway.

But I think I suppose I better pull over and look at it.

So I pulled over and. Left it running.

Left it running of course. He had to turn off cause the car

was gonna jump in the driver seat and take off.

Yeah, I left. It was a sting operation they

really wanted. I get round to the front of the

sub with my and it's very dark by the stage with my little phone torch. And I thought, where's the

damage? That bar looks fine, the

headlights aren't crunched, the bonnets not all dented up.

I thought, this is unbelievable. Like, did that just happen?

And all I could see was the grill was pushed in, the plastic grills just pushed in about an inch maybe, And I just got the bottom of it and went boom and it just popped back out to where it's meant to be. And that was it.

And I stood there looking at it, thinking, that's unbelievable.

Like I hit him reasonably hard. There was a bit of fur in the

grill. You know, I noticed that big

fur. So it didn't happen.

It wasn't a figment. Did happen.

I didn't imagine it, but remarkable and I thought, well, there's that's a good old solid sub for you.

They're designed to hit Elks and moose and things in Scandinavia, so I was very happy with that car and it drove really well.

Doesn't overheat, you know? So it's I'm, I'm enjoying being

a little sweetish. Smile for a few days, you know.

See where that goes. I really like those.

I like an early 900, like any 900 really.

I think. I think they're actually, you

know, they're well, well screwed together kind of.

Kind of. Yeah and my my friend you know

used to be a Asab he's been on a couple of times roll and he he's an ex sub master tech and he said you know some of the nine hundreds that were turbo or this or that had you know they could have various issues but he said that 2.3 plain Jane on turbo

with the auto is a very tough mechanical package.

He said very little goes wrong with them other than timing chains maybe they you know you said if it's got a noisy chain you have to put tensions in a chain in it but it goes other than that they they really never did anything while he was working on them and that was years.

So, you know, I'm reasonably confident that would be a good, good car for someone. Absolutely.

Nice. There's actually a plain Jane

we're talking about. Plain Jane being the just the

regular 900 engine but the earlier shape in a convertible in blue in a manual with the fabric interior.

So non turbo. Yeah terrible.

They they they put that out later in the run about 92 I think just right at the end of that first shape.

Yeah, and it's about it's about 8 1/2 grand or it's lovely old car. Very nice.

That could be a bit of you, David.

I know you're quite partial to an old save, Andrew.

David, I do love an old Sam, yeah.

It's certainly certainly car that very solid feeling on the highway. You can tell it's a front drive,

but for a front drive it's actually really well balanced and really solid. And just even the fuel cap, I

filled it up, you know, and most cars, you pop the fuel cap and it's plastic, fantastic. You know, the rest of the cars

metal, but the fuel caps not. This is a metal fuel cap.

It's incredibly solid. So little things like that have

impressed me with the sub and anyway on the weekend.

But the reason I was going to Bendigo was leaving from there to go to classic Japan in Adelaide, which is the premier sort of Japanese car show for SA.

And we drove over Tommy, who's been on this podcast before and I drove over on his in his 1986 Subaru Touring Waggon.

So this is the L series, manual touring waggon and that car he's done quite a bit of work to, that's really clean.

He's, but it has been sitting for 10 years.

So he did water pump and timing belt and you know, shockers, front, rear, you know, boil service, blah, blah, blah, you know, just resurrected it. That thing ran beautifully.

It was a delight to drive there and back.

The ride was surprisingly good. The seats were surprisingly

comfy. It's not a big cavern, but the

seats in those were very good. And so it just didn't put a foot

wrong, you know. And it was really like Tom and I

sort of both commented this this is fine like this how people got around in 1986. This is not a it's not a

terrible old horrible Oh my God, will it make it car?

It just just wasn't. Anyway, Japanese car show.

I won't dwell on it too much, but that was good.

There's the new section with all the Duff Duff stickers lowered, modified. Just makes me want to vomit.

And then the other, the other section that that is more me, that's the the actual sort of retro classics and there's a bongo van and a couple of beautiful MR2's, Maddie.

There was a red one that was minty mint, mint, mint, mint like yours, Very nice. There was, you know, a beige

Pajero 2 cars down from me with the high roof and the beige vinyl. It was like beige on beige and

it's just cool retro stuff like that.

So that was good. But on the last day, yesterday

morning, we when we were coming back, Tom wanted to get something from a wrecker, which was about 20 minutes South of Adelaide. This is like a jollies.

You pull it. So we drive down 20 minutes

South of Adelaide and very well laid out.

Reca you know nice and neat like jollies is here quite, quite nicely done. But the cars in the Wrecker,

they're like 15 years, 20 years behind where we are in Melbourne. There was old stuff.

There was a line of beetles in the records.

There were five Peugeot 50 fives.

In the reading there were four Peugeot 40 fours.

Sorry, 50 fours in the wrecker. There were 5 Jaguar XJ sixes in

the Wrecker like stuff that I have not seen in a Melbourne.

Pull it. Do it himself Wrecker.

For for years it was there and it was reasonably complete.

And I thought, my God, like when was the last time you just walk into a wrecker in Melbourne and OHS you need a wheel from a 504.

There it is like. It's almost worth the trip to

Adelaide, if you knew well. David, I took some photos for

you, a couple of Honda Accords that were in there, the three door model and being a Mitsubishi town, you know, being adult there were about 3 entire rows of Magnus.

Wow. I did take a photo of a grey Gen

1 Waggon for our friend Andrew, her same as his car.

But oh Magnus the plenty. And I I did say that to Ty.

I thought if you knew what they had in stock and was sort of wanting a little getaway it wouldn't be a crazy idea to go over there and and milk a wrecker like that.

Just can't. Yeah, because it's one of them.

I mean, imagine how many. Yeah, that's that's just one.

I mean, there will be more that we didn't, that we didn't get to. Well, I wanna add to that

because SA's got a lot less stringent rules for registration than we do. Yeah, when and when you buy a

car, you don't have to do a roadworthy process.

You can just put in your name. Yeah, so, so, like, so when

you're there and stuff. Going to test this when you're

like a lot of younger people drive really old cars because they're part, they pay $300.00, four hundred $500.00 for them

until they die and get another one.

You know, like, yeah, that's and and and and you know the and and the the. The card demography is quite

like the. I think that I think the average

the car park there, the average age is, is older than other states, definitely 100% and it's sort of unless you live right on the coast, it's relatively nice climate, you know it's sort of dryish and the roads are pretty good over there.

It's not a hard, there's no traffic so it's it's not hard on cars and you know in terms of stop start like Sydney, so I think yeah, I think I think it's the nice little Mecca of of slightly older stuff in USA. So I was pleasantly surprised.

I'm picking up my echo from the mechanic this week that's got Rowdy that's going in for Reg Monday.

It's the little 3 door auto Gen 1E with that cool old interior, you know, that aqueous sort of interior.

So I'll sell that soon and then I'll put the Saab in when that goes and see what that needs for Rodie.

Probably an awesome, isn't it? That's auto.

Yes, that's right. I think that is all my car news,

David Prince. I would like hard news at the

moment. I've been a bit busy with other

stuff in the last couple of weeks.

Let me think the I've had the purple Z360 hard top at my place and I've been doing a few bits and pieces of that, just detailing it up and that car was looking like it was going to be disposed of. One of these classic shared cars

that often people in car clubs have that has numerous owner claims to it. But really, it's such a sweet

little car that turns every time.

It's besides every time you turn the key, I just think I don't know that you're gonna find the person that's going to give you what it's worth from the point of view that where are you going to find another one like that's that's well sorted and no rust starts and drives. They don't take up much space.

It got a really good reception at the last highball but it hadn't been there before. But yeah, it's such a cool

little car a Honda zip for those listening.

They don't know what it is. If they remember the Aussie film

Malcolm that can't split in half, it's it's one of those.

It's one of them. It's one of them, but this is

actually the water cooled version.

There was an air cooled and water cool and it's the on top version so it's pillarless and it's four inches longer he will Mr Honda being the engineer that he was nothing actually is interchangeable between the air cooled and the water cools so frustratingly so but but yeah that's a really cool cool little car so I've and I've got some room to work on at the moment.

The garage has the my Red in 360 scam and the Purple Zed in it, so it's it's a genuine early K garage at the moment.

The no ones being prepared to sail because I'll be moving that one on now that I've decided to bring manually from Japan which the colour and spec that I once proving a little a little elusive at the moment but what I'll turn up I'm not in any great hurry yeah knowing now that I doubt it'll take as long as the last one did to organise and with in the middle of COVID that took nearly a year to get here.

But I think the the timeline is much better now.

That's about it. I was thinking about tonight

earlier in the day as I'm driving my Volkswagen and the transmissions squeaking between 1st and.

Second again. Yep, they didn't fix it last

time I was in for service, but I reported it because they will be fixing it. Still got 18 months of warranty

left, so I'll be getting that fixed.

Probably this? Time.

It has the clutches. All done.

Yeah, 35,000 cases it did. Yep.

Yep. It all the clutch is done.

And I think it had, I don't know if it had them all done.

I mean, of course with warranty, they don't usually tell you they just fixed. It but it was Gearbox out.

Yes, yes, I presume so. I had a small loan car.

That was 35,000. How many cases are we on now?

49 It says on it now. Wow.

Wow. Yeah.

So not that long later. Not that long night and look, it

hasn't stopped. I'm not, you know, the car

hasn't left me ruined or overheated or slipped like and still works. But every time it changes

between gears now and sort of whistles at me so.

Anyway, still better than my gearbox.

Yeah, as I was saying that, Scotty, I thought, that's a relative, aren't they, you know? I wish mine just whistled.

Yeah, that's right, mine clunks and doesn't want to go in any gears. Yeah.

Joy about. There's a few decades difference

between the gearboxes. There is a few decades, I nearly

said when I. Was probably doing a bit.

Better be doing better. I I didn't exhibit you talking

about yours? Is it a DDSG?

But no. Japanese TSG, yeah.

Yeah, so look. The the the vents great.

It's just it's just your box. Box does drive me a bit crazy

and I figured when I bought it I thought, well we'll see how this goes. You know, I couldn't get a

manual when I wanted it, so another manual.

So anyway, no complain. OHS.

I think the last time we spoke about the MX5 and the what do you call the name of them, the Coil packs.

I decided that I was going to put a new set of coil packs so I ended up getting a set of those. I think about 160 odd somewhere

in there I only need to get 2 because it shares the call between 2 cylinders each. I've also got the extra leads to

go from the callback to the other cylinders just to make sure that it wasn't either of those.

So I got those in, got home, took off the old callbacks.

I always you know you should probably everyone.

Every mechanic most likely does it.

It's something I would have normally and have a look at both the coil packs just to make sure they're right.

One of them, the new ones, the little cover that I guess attaches to the spark plug itself, that was not on properly. The rubber had kind of gone over

the point where the the call would she touched the spark plug. So I figured that would have

started misfiring like the way I would have been used.

So I took that off, refitted it, make sure it set properly, put a little bit of dielectric grease in and then fit them all and the car sprung to life immediately. Like normally I'd crank it for

at least one and half seconds and then it start up.

Now within like half a second it basically starts, Oh well.

So I definitely think they were on their way out and so far have not had a misfire issue. But at the same time, I think

that one was after a few months. So I'm still you know holding

out but I did end up doing probably about 500 kids in the car and then my brother in law has taken it because his car at the mechanic getting new springs which he decided the mechanics a good guy but he's a bit unreliable in terms of timing.

I said how about you wait till he gets the suspension in the new shockers and struts and he's like Nah, I'll just send it and he'll bring it. And now it's been like a week

and a half and still at the shop.

So first I took the DMAX and now they took the MSR like we'd like the Max from in case dad wants to use it but he'll at least put some keys on it and if it does I guess shop again.

I'll have a better idea. So I've done at least 500's, I

think he'll do probably within the week, somewhere around 2300, so at least I'll know that way and so far so good.

So you know, fingers crossed that's the issue.

The DMAX where it's automatic lights always being on.

No, that was just me driving the car in the later afternoon.

It was not a car issue. Drove the car in the morning or

during, you know, proper sunlight, it was fine.

The headlights were not turned on so you know, got all done, gave the MX5 awash and took the SGI a couple of times.

Hmm. Because my brother and sister

taking the the Emax, I actually ended up needing to take the the STI a few times. I was happy about that, like I'm

not fond of taking it shopping centres because after all Dings and everything else. But this time I packed super,

super far away and thankfully nobody had parked next to you when I came back. So happy with my groceries and

you know, just drove home and yeah, that's that's probably better for me. Very, very good.

Tonight's topic. Gentlemen of cars that were

unbelievably uncool now coming into their own being cool.

So for example the reason why I want to bring this up.

A Falcon, isn't it? Well, I mean the URL is is is

the is the one or the only choice here.

But you know when you go to Carson coffee and stuff and and you know a good friend Mr Andrew Rushworth will will completely attest to this. You know you go there with a

with a really basic car that that's from a from a you know from a bygone era that people used to just scoff out and be like oh whatever. It's just an old Magna to now

being like wow that's actually unbelievably cool.

You know it's it's hard to see it.

It's hard, but it's also weird to see that that that kind of they're gonna turn around. Now I remember like old Corollas

used to be, not unless it was like an 86 or something, but like even even then sprinters were like, they weren't really worth much. But like those OK 50 fives and

stuff, they were just considered old cars.

Like they weren't there, but like even when they were new, like they weren't. They wanna make better ones like

cool car but now it's completely sought after So I want to leave it in your capable hands of what do you think now like now really kind of sought after and really kind of cool even though even though they were very uncool. Now I wanna said say Ed, you

you're gonna inspire me because I was listening back to a few old episodes when you talk about your your, your your parents had a was a Nissan. Yes.

Yes, Irvin. Yeah, and and like unbelievably

uncool you didn't wanna get dropped anywhere near school in.

It not, not. But now, like Vans are really

cool, cool at the moment. Like Vans are really in like

high asses and and and Geragos and and events.

Yeah, they're really cool. I think bands are are are a good

example of an area that have become cool, particularly retro.

I mean there's always been a, you know, a culture of camper, vans that kind of cool like combies and and you know at a Volkswagen, if you go buy a new Volkswagen Multivan camper, even though it's an unreliable bucket of shit, it's it's cool.

You know, there's no question about that in terms of the pop top and the accessories and the stove and the way they fit it all in. And so I think vans by their

nature are cool. It's just that some go well,

they all go through that daggy non cool phase and then hopefully they come out the other end and and be cool again.

It was amazing actually, coming back from Adelaide, how many egg Terrago is I saw like on the road driving, I reckon I saw seven, you know, between Adelaide and Melbourne, just all around the traps, you know. And not necessarily from the

show. They're just.

None of them showed. None of them.

Not once. The thing you just they just

seem. To running.

They are still running those things out there as transport.

And I watched a movie, I watched a couple of episodes of Boy Swallows Universe. It's a, you know, miniseries

like based on a book. It's very good so far, I've

gotta say. But yeah, he drives a a a Nissan

Vanette in the show, and it's a little beige thing with cool stripes. And at first I thought it was a

light ace, and then I said no, that's a Vandette.

Hmm. Look, God, where are they now?

You just don't see those things. And there's a very cool standard

So we like Vans one. Do you think Vans are particular

are like kind of an exception to the rule?

If you see like a really cool Spectron with all the decals and then the great like that's just that's just kind of cool now, right? Like that it's got in the middle

swivel seat and everything. It's very.

But they were, they were pretty daggy there for a while.

Those fans, I suppose there's. A a Nomad XE lives not far from

us in Burwood with the original very cool alloys and bars and everything rusted as all get out.

There's still going. Still going, Still running, sort

of kind. That comes to mind as being not

cool and then cool and worth money.

You know, you get some Japanese stuff like Datsuns, Like, you know, my grandfather had a 240K sedan in a manual and that, you know, there was a phase there where they were just jalopy, rust bucket, $500 cars. They were not sought after.

No one was buying them and restoring them.

No one was even giving them a second glance.

And then suddenly through this whole skyline hype it's sort of dragged those gloppy Datsuns as David McCall into the the the into the view again of people and they're like oh it's got the round tail lights like a skyline and it's Japanese and it's straight 6 motor and oh hang on a minute and so you know I I sort of can't believe what what they're worth you know in coupe form particularly. But there's other Japanese cars

along that line, like Mazda capellas and stuff that I saw at the show on Sunday that would just cheap rubbish is now kind of cool and collectible because they're they're Chrome bumper Jacksons, last place you know. Well well well Capella I've

always kind of I mean they weren't exactly cool but they they were always bought by people that put a Rotary in them and basically and basically and and went nuts but but talk to your to your guts and you know point like a 120 why is like a really cool car now which is which is hard to believe like that's it's everyone's like oh cool 120 why but I remember why I was on news. That was #1 on my list. 120 Wise

were awful, awful cars and sort of still are in a lot of ways but the. Cockroach of the 70s.

You don't kill them. Having said that, on Sunday I

saw a green 120 white coop at the show that was in wasn't concourse, but it was in very tidy condition.

But one thing I noted on it was that it had all four original hubcaps and that were undamaged. You have, you know, 121 hubcap.

They they go out. Through the long way out, the

edges of them are this ridiculously overcomplicated sort of metal spokes all around the edge and then this flat dish face and they are so easily crunched on gutters so 9 out of 10 of them are just destroyed. This car had a full set of

glamour hubcaps and I I really stopped and admired that.

Yes, Hatch, yes. They were.

They were the penultimate ugly duckling, I reckon they came out. Yeah.

Nothing nice about them at all, but you kind of nice Aqua one these days. Hmm.

Or yellow or or, yeah. My year four year high school

start, high school primary school teacher, she had an orange one and it was a horrible car, the thing used to smoke, but she drove it everyday and you in and out and always.

Includes many. I had, I had seen how I had

second name embarrassment because my teacher had the worst car in the school, you know? What did this second hand

Embarrassment. But you know it's it worked and

I was like, oh she got 121 like and and as a kid I knew what that was because I was just like, oh, you know but but now it's like I was like oh that that'd be that'd be the coolest car in the car park because one it's still going but two it's it's just it's gonna be a character.

And yeah, I remember a good friend of mine, Tyler, his ah geez, his mum had a that I like an early 80s Bluebird, like the the real scary kind of, I kind of kind of the model.

But it was the worst car ever been.

It was, it was falling apart. It was it's still wet, but it

was just a miserable bucket of pass anyway.

I remember. The first four limousine I'll

have you know. Yeah.

Anyway I remember tallest tallest mom was always like well I've I've just got one my new cars on its way out.

I finally ordered my older new car and I'm like oh great like you know like what you getting She rocks up in an AAU Falcon Waggon. I'm like, oh, it's like you just

like you got the worst to where it's like, what is wrong with you? Having pan into the fire.

Yeah, sorry, I yeah, I remember just and she was super proud of.

She's like, I've got front electric window.

She's like, I didn't have that in the in the in the Bluebird.

We are only front. Any front, but I remember like

actually I I saw, I saw him, I saw him a while ago probably probably two or three years ago and his mum still got it like she has. She has her cast for a very long

period of time so she still with the USA and but but yeah it was I remember just just being in that in that it was like that that kind of grainy like you know the colour when you say it.

It wasn't It wasn't nicest green and it was yeah it was too tired and it was it was just it was it had the had the orange lenses that were cracked and broken and it was.

It was yeah. It wasn't It wasn't like like it

wasn't it wasn't at RX put it that way.

But it's yeah, that one always stuck with me and now I kind of see I'm like it's actually kind of cool you know I I I totally rocked that. Um.

So David, interesting because the guy that runs Highball has has a has that shape Bluebird, but the one that he's got ended up it's like an 80, a 1980 or 79 model which is what we were still in 1-2 hundred bees back then.

So the book came out in 82 but this is an 8181 and it was actually a cardboard out by General Motors Holden to actually before you know they knew Nissan were going to release that the Bluebird in Australia.

So it was to sort of position against the camera and pull it apart and see how it works. So he ended up with with that

car. I think he had a relative that

worked at Holden in the day and they sort of put it all back together and sold it, sold them off sort of thing.

So. It's a full Jap spec one, but

the Australian cars had the better seats and they had, you know, a lot more local content to them and different bumpers and stuff to the the JDM ones. But yeah, I mean that my brother

had one new and a waggon had it for.

Years and years and years and then.

Interestingly went into an EA Falcon, so I mean it was logical regression from that, but it was just a base Geo fabric trim rusted away, but really nice instrumentation at night.

I remember the instruments were really well set out and you know, like a Christmas tree, they're all colours of the rainbow on the on the instruments.

Such a dull car though, aren't they just?

choice of a Camry or like, you know, one of the other mid-size sedans that are like, let's be honest, really, really pedestrian looking. This is something where like,

you're still being responsible as an adult.

You still want your car that you not paying too much for, you're not going to spend too much on fuel, that sort of thing.

But it has a sharp enough look where, you know, you're like, I'm cool dad, yeah. To that point I always thought

like when the Orions came out it was like it was like when when your mom said to you like but when you ask him hey mom, can I ask him ice cream from the from the from the van that you know the ice cream man. Yeah.

It's like it's like no we've got ice cream at home and the and the ice cream at home is the Orion.

Yeah. It's it's it's it's it's it's

like it's like can I, can I can I get an extra 6.

like a Orion ZR6. It was you know it's it's that

away, but he wants to give the homies, Yeah, and you know, something that's mid size kind of fits, fits the bill really nicely. Quite reliable and and yeah it's

funny like you you you laugh at some of these cars because you know they were good grandparents and to be fair they marketed the Orion 2 old people like remember the ad was like an old couple driving the car with you know and every time I've seen one like it's got the you know the straw hat in the past the shelf and and and all that it's it it was.

I remember the out was like oh money money Avalon V6 and it was just it was it was it was. I remember that out of like,

they even marketing it to old people like Toyotas.

There's no shame with Toyota like that.

That was it was. Just isn't there the Hilux that

now like a divorced couple? Yeah, and the sharing custody of

the. High chair custody, yeah.

I think we had discussed it on on the podcast before, but the original HRV that came out in like 99, I think you got the most handsome, best car they've ever produced, I don't think.

And I think, Ed, you actually describe them as pond scum at one time, I think. Yes, when they were launched,

particularly in that yellowy Goldie metallic colour, I said, what the hell are Honda doing? That pond scum.

And yeah, it's been my constant little label for that car ever since. But then I had one a while back

and I really liked. It.

Um, as we said at the time, brilliant ground clearance, brilliant approach and departure angle.

Even though it's not 4 wheel drive in the true sense of the word, you can go over things in that car like I like.

I like a car to be able to drive over things in what gutters and gutter mids and Kangaroos, ideally.

And then it had the Ek running gear, which is incredibly reliable, nice manual gearbox. The CVT was dreadful, don't

touch the CVT. But the manuals were great and

the interior is really hard wearing, very visible.

You could Chuck stuff in them. They're very square in the back

so they're very practical. So it's just there's a lot going

for one of those and they're worth nothing.
