Let's crack on with some car updates.

Alan Deep Singh, we'll start. With you, I took the STI to work

on Friday. On.

Friday I decided that you know I would bring the old STI out I.

Think there was quite a line up. Yeah, Yeah, there was.

Unfortunately, we're missing a tie bar.

Oh, look at you, Maddie. Look at me, it's her car.

But there was permissions that we had to be granted.

I said she could totally drive it mate.

What we actually wanted her to bring was the F6.

Yes, that that is also true. So in Sharon's tie bar spot I

had to line up her XR8 which the fuel light was on.

So I thought oh you know, it can't fuel light on.

So I went down to local pump with the car, with Sharon's permission of course. So we're in about 20 bucks

worth, which with 98 you're not getting a lot, and got a compliment from the the survey lady.

Oh really? Yeah, I was like, thanks, it's

my boss's car. She's like, oh, you should've

told me that. I'm like, no, I like my boss,

it's fine. The only problem was once I

filled up, there's about a little over 10 litres.

I thought it'll do something at least.

And the feel like it's still on and I'm like, man, Sharon's going to be like, did you actually take the car to get filled up or did you go for a joyride?

Because I was going on joyride. Did you give it the old Italian

tune up? You had to get out of the

cobwebs. So what I thought was I was

improving the fuel economy because the number was getting higher. Turns out it was actually

getting worse. The time I was done when they

got up to 20 litres per 100K. That's about right.

But as I was driving, the fuel gauge did actually flick up slowly. So I went to 1/4, which I'm

like, you know, it was, it was close to the quarter when it first came in to be stored here. And it's, we've just been idling

and, you know, wasting my fuel. So I was like, give it a bit of

a drive and that way at least the spark plugs can get a bit cleaner. And did it drive her up?

Yeah, it drive fine. You can.

Again, it's not going to be hugely powerful given its age, given the nature of the VA that it has.

You know, it's old school, but the surge of talk is stillwell and truly there. Yeah.

So it's a it's a grand old time. It drives really well, that

thing. Yeah, it drives very.

It feels very good. Yeah, yeah, it was pretty nice.

They didn't give it the full beans because I'm respectful like that. Can't be breaking my boss's car,

at least while I'm on probation. While you're on probation.

But yeah, I I did give it a bit of the old Italian tune.

I'm gonna cleaned it up a bit and, you know, made sure it got properly up to temperature and that sort of thing.

Not very good. So yeah, you know, we were

disparaged a little bit while one of the other Co workers about our lineup of cars. So I thought, you know, you

know, we raced what we brung, you know, a master.

Imagine the three, you know, of nondescriptive amounts.

So we got we got, but overall pretty good, pretty good evening all afternoon that day with the lineup.

I feel like this is a, you know, family rent, but my sister decided that her cars are in trouble and it's always, you know, when you ask what kind of trouble, she's like, well, it shakes, but only when you let off the throttle.

I'm like, is it shaking on one side of the car?

Is it steering on shaking? Can you describe anything at all

apart from it shakes? Yeah.

What is the shake? No.

Of course not. And so you know, she's like,

well, can I borrow the Honda? And this I get to be picky up

because I'm like, I paid for this car.

The rest of the cars are like, you know, it is what it is.

I paid for this one. So all right, fine.

But she merely turned that into oh, I'm going to borrow the Honda too. I need the Honda and the D Max

at the same time. What's cool, because my brother

in So I decided that rather than send one car at a time and be left with a car, at least it's, you know, logic.

Logic is like just send both the cars and then borrow two of our cars. Like, So what, what?

I just have the STI as like my only means of, you know, transport. Also, what do mum and dad drive?

Nothing. Nothing.

Yeah. So, yeah, I, I worry about her

sometimes and, and the sense of logic she operates under.

But, you know, she's happily married.

She lives in her own home. So, you know, I guess she's

still better than I am. Yeah, it, it is what it is.

I was. Going to say, Alan, in regards

to your sister, you know I've got some more cars in stock if she needs something. Oh really?

might be able to buy that buy that car back quite cheap.

It's currently being auctioned as we speak.

Being auctioned. Yeah, I sent that to the

auctions it needs it's got 45 minutes to go, so, you know, be quick. Grey Classic online auction I'm.

Might be able to buy it back cheaper than what I paid for it anyway. What have I got?

What have I got? What have I got?

I have bought a Subaru Impreza 2014 hatch, so 10 years old, very clean car. It's Pearl white with alloys

even though it's a base model and it has 41,000 KS on it which is super low. That's a really tidy little car

that's all wheel drive. That's a nice ride for your

sister, Alan. Yeah, could be.

It'd be replacing her. Good.

Yaris. That's Yaris, Yeah.

That's a good upgrade. So that's one car Peugeot three

O 6. I'm still rocking around in

that. I'm I'm enjoying the little

diesel pug that's had a new clutch cable fitted door trim, re secured new wiper blades. It's going in to have panel work

done on, on sort of the about the 9th of September, I think, But I'm currently enjoying driving that.

That out of the first full tank of diesel did 921 KS before the fuel light came on. Now that worked out.

I did a little measurement at 6.1 litres per 100, which is

actually, it's very good, but it's not brilliant for that car.

But it was all around town running.

So if you did do a pure highway run, I, you know, they say you'd get 11-12 hundred out of it. And I I believe that given,

given what it's done around town.

That's very good. So yeah, I'm happy with that.

So now I'm on the second tank of diesel.

It has been to Geelong and back on that tank and working back just today. So we'll we'll see that May that

may give a bit better given it's done a Geelong run.

I did my deal on the Isuzu NPR truck and the Hyundai I load a a dual deal. So I've been driving the I load

a few days to work and that's just waiting on a roadworthy.

The truck is going to be auctioned.

So if anyone wants a good, perfectly maintained and driving Isuzu, NPR, they'll go to Manheim.

And that surprisingly, that truck really easy to drive.

You know, it's one of those ones that you drive on a car licence.

So it's the sort of ones that budget have as a hire truck and that sort of thing. And it's one of those automated

manuals, but works really well and great turning circle, good visibility given you can't see out the back.

The mirrors are really good and everything.

And I just thought, wow, this is this is I can see why people hire these. This is an easy thing to live

with. It's got the power lift,

tailgate and stuff and that's a premium.

I didn't realise it's got velour trimmer.

It's got cruise control. I just found that out a couple

of days ago. So I like I like the little

Isuzu truck. If I had a if I had a little

higher business or something, you'd you'd keep that.

What else? I bought off my neighbours a

very nice low mileage 2010% waggon, which is a 3.2 V 6.

It's one down from like that R 36%.

So it's got the leather, the roof, the heated seats, the camera, the beepers, you know the 18 inch room's got all that stuff on it. It's full motion.

So it's 4 wheel drive that drives really nicely.

It's very grunty, you know, all those things.

Nowhere near as economical as the Peugeot, but a nice spec car that is only down to like 83 1/2 thousand K.

So and you know really nice service history on it and stuff.

So I'm just getting the wheels refurbished likely in a couple of weeks and then it's getting detailed at the moment and then I'll put that for sale. What else is there?

We're gonna, we're gonna do David last 'cause he's got, he's got the big update, Rob. The E four 30s all put back

together, all painted all. Done.

That's all done. That's one car out of the way

that still need to do roof rails on the E36 AMG, but hopefully you'll get that done over the next week or so.

So is that E430 up for sale now or is it?

It is, Yep, it's up for sale so if anyone wants it, make me an offer. What?

What is that car? Of which one?

It's a hey 1990 DW. 210. Yeah.

How many KS on that? It's got less than it's around

about the 200 ish. OK.

And how much do we want for that?

Well I I paid 3 1/2 for it so I want at least that.

And this is an E36. E No, it's a that's not an E36,

it's just an E430. Oh, so it's.

Just the. And it's the avant garde.

It's the top of range. OK, E430 avant garde 200,000 K

and you want like 3 1/2 four or something there.

Yeah. Is that with a roadworthy?

No. He laughs.

Fair enough, fair enough. If I had a I could probably get

5 or 6 for it. Yeah.

Yeah, so, so but yeah, look, it's a nice car.

It's all clean. The motor's clean.

The guy mechanically looked after it.

He's just he's not one of the he's not he's into cars, he's a lawyer, but he treated his car like AI don't know, like a a trash can inside the interior wasn't wasn't loved whatsoever.

Even exterior. He just it was, I don't know,

just parked at anywhere everywhere.

There was little Nicks and dents everywhere and just little just I think I don't know, maybe maybe where he lives or where he worked. It was just not a very good

place. He used it for to to go to his

holiday home and back and things like that.

So he's just the dogs are in it. It's just so I've cleaned it up

pretty well. It's like we've done a lot of

cleaning inside externally. We painted all the roof, changed

the bonnet with so it wasn't all sort of all flaking.

What else would do? Change the mirror because the

mirror was too loose and sort of floppy.

Bumper bars all yeah, all fresh now, but even why I so change?

What colour is that, Rob? It's a silver car in colour.

With black. With black, white.

Black leather. Yeah, it's black leather, so

it's got the black leather inside there.

So it's got, it's even got the carbon fibre finish on the door.

Yeah, yeah. Car.

So it's very nice, very, very nice car, but it still needs to make it 100%. There's a couple little dents on

the door. It needs a good detail.

So yeah, I don't know how much money you want.

What time do you want to spend on a car that's not worth a lot of money? Yeah, I get it.

But it it's almost like the car was about to be like stripped out. I was going to pull the motor

out of it was that bad. But then I picked up a

Immaculate E320 right that I'm going to pull the motor out of that one for the E the actually the 2:30 CE.

Yeah. But so I had a good bonnet, good

doors, good bumper bars. So I sprayed all the bumper bars

up on that. Yeah, yeah.

I weren't knocked around so it's come up real good that I went to Northern Girls Meet on Saturday night was a brilliant night.

The weather was fantastic, fantastic turn out, hundreds of cars and some nice cars too. So there was AXI.

Think W yellow GT with a Barra Turbo in it.

Cool. Yeah.

So that looked pretty good. And you couldn't tell from the

outside whether, you know what was in it.

Like it was, it was done real well.

And you had a lot of trucks. It was a old, what do they call

them the the Mexican. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, I can power

or something like that with with the airbags and the.

Yeah, yeah. What are them?

There was some high end cars. There was a Porsche Cayenne done

up to be an off road like a rough roads one.

Like a trans Siberia. Yeah, it had all the, the, the

the rifles, big bump, a big bull bar on it.

It was done, it was done up real well.

So there's some real good cars. There's some.

Yeah, it was. It's worthwhile going.

One of my mates Shelby GT350 look alike Mustang that he spent probably over 100,000 on it. He actually got the genuine

sheet seats out of a Shelby from America, brought the seats over here and everything's opposite, right?

So auto trimmer to tear his seats apart, his factory seats and put the Recaro Shelby seats onto his bases on the so he's still got the electric. So he's got probably the only

one in Australia or probably in the world that's got Shelby seats that are electric back and forth.

That's cool. Yeah, pretty neat.

The seats alone costing me about $10,000.

Wow. The two seats.

Wow. Yeah.

By the time he got it shipped over here, got it reupholstered, all converted, they paid the taxes on it, the shipping.

Yeah, so, so very nice car. And he's got a A again a Whipple

supercharger on it, all the running gears got the big upgraded brakes discs on it a whole lot.

So the car also goes yeah well as well so no so that was good to go in it's wheel spins in pretty much every gear from 100 from nought all the way through. So even at 80 kilometres an

hour, you just tramp it and just starts wheel spinning.

Crazy, crazy, crazy. But you know that that was his

retirement gift to himself after leaving Toyota, after I think he was there for 30 something years.

Oh, wow. Yeah, yeah.

So that's pretty much it. David Prince Now the big update.

The eagle has landed, it appears.

Not so much the legal. The eagle is the, the little,

you know, really buzzy little wasp, I suppose.

And it is orange. So yeah, orange and black Wasps

are blue, orange, yeah. So Thursday I finally got to

pick up the car. It was registered Thursday

morning with my plates and yeah, it was ready for me to pick up about 3:00. So I got a lift out there and

drove it home. And it's absolutely ripping

little car. I'm very, very happy with it,

which is really a relief at the end of the line that it didn't end up being something I wasn't as excited as I am about so.

And also David, something that nearly it wasn't allowed to be registered to Australia given the exactly.

Right, exactly right. A few people from.

The Department of Infrastructure.

Yeah, so I've had a few people reach out to me since I've put a couple of photos on social media about it saying wow, you know, you were lucky to get get one because it turns out there's actually only a window about of about 1010 or 11 months where you can actually bring those manuals in now.

So before the before they don't qualify with the change in the impact, the side impact regulations, it came in in October 21. So yeah, it's only the car they

came out in I think November 20. And yeah, so only that that sort

of 1011 month window, are you eligible to import them as a manual so? Well that's a Car Talk.

Top tip if you want Honda N1RS manual or or or did they do an order? It was the order was the manual

or order, whichever way you look at it, it was no cost option you could choose, yeah. So if you want one of those,

it's got to be made physically built between like October 20 and. And October 2020.

One October 21. Yeah, yeah, a small window.

So, so yeah, there's a lot of little differences about it that I'm, I'm finding every time I drive it, I find something else like it's got auto stop start, which I didn't realise it's got.

One of the cool things about it is that it's got bucket seats rather than than a bench seat. The, the earlier in ones just

had like a, they were still bucket seat.

They move forward individually, but they're actually touching in the middle. So it felt like a bench seat

sort of thing in the middle just to give you a bit more room, but the buckets in it go back further.

So you've got more room in the car anyway, but they're really comfortable and just allow you to sort of position yourself far more comfortably than you could in the other car.

And being a manual, obviously you're more involved in the driving process of A2 rather than just sort of sitting on a bench and pressing a go pedal or a stop pedal.

Really. Yeah.

And it's interesting being the new platform to the old cartoon.

It's got a lot more safety tech that the the earlier car didn't have it. It's got the Honda Sensing sort

of features with lane keep assist and and the city emergency brake and all those sorts of things.

So heated seats. It's very dark inside.

Got a black roof lining it being the Rs rather than the, which is interesting and, and really have a heavy tinting on the back windows and on the tailgate. So you look in the revision

mirror and it's like trying to look through through smoke or something. It's it's actually pretty dark

to see at the back. I might investigate seeing if I

get the tint off because I'm not a huge fan of really dark tint but it just shows how much room there is.

It still doesn't feel hemmed in, there's still plenty of headroom and stuff but it certainly doesn't feel as airy as the the earlier car did because they had like a grey roof lining.

But it's having been to, having been to Seeker performance in, sorry, not Seeker Performance. There is a Seeker in Melbourne,

but it's nothing to do with Seeker in Japan.

Seeker is a tuning house like Spoon or one of those places.

But rather than have their own stuff, they seem to go through and pick up the best bits from all the other aftermarket tuners up there. So it's got some Blitz pieces,

it's got a bit of Spoon, it's got a bit of Noogan, it's got bits and pieces on it that all together like it's, I think it's been really thoughtfully done because it drives really nicely and really well sorted. And with the, the reflash of

the, the ECU with the, the blitz power Com underneath.

I still haven't worked out exactly of what state of tune it is, but I know that that power Com will actually take it from the regulation 47 kilowatts that it governed to at the factory just north of 70. So it's a big power increase for

an engine, but you can feel it too, because it, it pulls really nicely, doesn't it Ed? It does.

I was privileged enough to have a little drive on Sunday afternoon and and I've driven David's previous N1, Previous N1 was zippy, zingy, you know, it was a light, fluffy sort of feel and certainly not bad by any means.

This one just feels far more planted on the road.

The manual box, we think, according to David has had a short shift put in it or some such thing.

It's really tight and really mechanical in the feel of it and it just suits it, you know. So you know, I'm I'm not a big

fan of mods, as you all know, but I said to David what whatever they've done to this car, like like David alluded to, has been done really thoughtfully.

And I haven't driven a standard Rs neither, neither is David, I don't think. But but it's certainly very,

very good, you know, really tight.

You just and so engaging with that little gearbox.

And I, I'm a big fan of it. Love colour, love the spec

heated seats, buckets, as you said, fantastic.

I yeah, I really like it. There's not many.

It feels a lot more exotic and performance oriented than it is, you know? That sums it up.

Actually, that has it. Looks like a little tight bar.

Yeah. And, and it's just not, you

know, it's a bit like the scamp I bought off you, David.

You know, when you sit behind the, the, the wood rim steering wheel, like fake wood and the little aluminium and the zingy motor, you could be in a Fiat or an out for a, you know, something that's sort of traditionally more exotic and more expensive. It's got that feel about it.

You know, it really feels planted and refined.

It's not a ratly little teeny car.

It's a it's a very refined machine.

At 7:30 just on 32,000 KS, which is proportionately more than the red one had the red one had 50 on it when I sold it, but it was 10 years old. This is a yeah, four years old.

But you know, I feel, I feel a bit strange saying that I had no idea when I bought it. I knew it had a couple of mods

on it, but I didn't know the extent of the mods until further down the track. And obviously then seeing it and

now driving it sounds a bit tweeter say I I went for that one because I wanted the orange. This is all like a bit of a

bonus, but but yeah, it they it, it looks, it looks cracking in in orange rather than I mean, they came from the factory, they came in white. There are a lot of white ones

for sale in Japan because Japanese people love their white cars. There's a there are a lot of

black ones for sale, very few orange ones, few yellow ones.

They come in a dark green for some unknown reason, But it turns out the, the orange actually only ran for the first year and then they they dropped that in favour of flame red, which is the like, like the old car was.

So yeah, the, the red doesn't. And interestingly, all the RSS

have orange highlights through the interior.

So there's orange stitching on the steering wheel and around the vents. It's got like an orange rim and

all that sort of thing. So that's the one.

Yes, that's exactly it. What's showing us on the screen?

Yeah, so the the the with the orange highlights, orange is obviously the colour we go. And also it's a nod back to the

original Civic Rs from the 70s because they came in sunset orange as well. Even the same, the colour was

the same. So I like that sort of nod to

the heritage. Did you say dark green, David

Prince? I do.

Yeah, yeah. For some reason they come in

doesn't. Suit that car.

No, not at all. And especially with the the

orange highlights, it just doesn't doesn't, doesn't fit.

One thing I had to change for roadworthy with a wheel, so we're not there you go yeah, no, yeah, no.

What I yeah, what they had to change was it's got AT37.

I think it it had on it like a gold 1.

So that sort of brought another colour into the mix, which was sort of you know that they look good, but they're a 16 inch rim with A50 Series, A 16550 series tyre.

So but interestingly, they had big spaces on the back and narrower spaces on the front. So we couldn't have those for

roadworthy. So I took took around the set of

14 inch black racing 1 Abbey style rims that I had on the red car. I sold the red car with the

original wheels on it and kept the kept the nice 14 inch rims.

So even though I've gone an inch smaller than standard, which is 15, but they're not coming off the car, They feel they look fantastic on the car and really feel the wheels out nicely.

So the the the wheel arches out nicely and the the stance of the car is just right now. And I think being 14 probably

adds to the to the ride too rather than 16.

So if anyone's after a cheap set of bronze T30 sevens, maybe give you a call. It's exciting news, David.

Much I feel honest, I feel a quick glance at the the colour variety. David, you definitely got the

Is the back seat coming out or is it just flip down and flip up? No, it's got what they it's got

what they call Honda magic seats.

So they, you know, they flopped out.

They all down to give you a flat surface, a flat flat area in the back or else the bases actually fold up against the back rest as well. So you've got a vertical space.

In fact, the the guy that bought my old car G'day to Georgia, if you're listening, he actually is a scuba diver and he said it's one of the few cars I can actually stand the scuba tanks up in in. So that's one of the things that

he finds great about it. That and taking photos of it,

you know, with spider webs on the on the petrol petrol lid and squeezing into car parks that that cars shouldn't normally be in. Just out of curiosity, David, I

know, I know. Go Garage.

They've had a green one there and that's a 2022 so.

Yeah, that was an auto that 1 I think.

That was an auto, yeah. Yeah.

So that one sold. Is that still on their on their

listing? It's on their website, but it's

sold I think. Yeah.

Yeah. OK.

So that one sold a while because they had a yellow manual and they had a they had a yellow manual and they had the the green auto in an Rs. So they sold both of them.

I did drive the auto when I was up in Sydney at Christmas time, sorry, I did drive the menu when I was up at in Sydney at Christmas time but I just didn't didn't love the colour and for the price they were asking I thought no we won't do that.

So I'll get the colour I really want, which I did so and I'm very happy I did. Absolutely.

That's very cool. Back to you, updates with you.

Updates with me. So the laser went back today to

the mechanic because I said it's just it felt like the other drive shaft was had an issue after I got after I got it replaced, they did some testing found it that it was a drive shaft they put in it's faulty so it's getting covered under warranty. So that's currently there and I

should get it back tomorrow. So they because it came from a

place that remanufactures them so.

Does that mean they're now going to give you your original one that's been rebuilt? Yeah, probably.

That honestly wouldn't surprise me at this point because I've just said yeah, that'd. Be pretty funny how you get your

original back. I mean, I'd laugh to be fair,

but yeah, I, I thought it was like they call me like, yeah, look, it wasn't the other one. It was actually just ended up

being the the one that we put in because it was vibrating and it felt like I had hardened engine mounts in the car like this.

This doesn't feel right. And I called him up and I'm

like, hey, Sebastian, it's your number one ball breaker.

He's like, oh, don't tell me something's wrong with it.

And I'm like, yeah, it's, it's not right.

He's like, I'll bring it back and we'll, and we'll, and we'll have a gander and he's like, yeah, definitely not right.

We'll, you know, we'll, we'll, we'll do some, some, some sussing. And I sussed it today and I

said, yeah, look, it's, it's, it's a warranty job.

He's like, it's just, he's like, we always advised to go new, but I, we ordered 5 new, new ones and they were all wrong.

So, so yeah, it was just one of those things, I suppose, where he's like, well, we had we couldn't go new and this is, and this is the this is the outcome. But it's OK, it'll it'll get

fixed under warranty and it's not, it's not coming out of my pocket, which is which is good. So yeah, I should get that back

tomorrow afternoon and be happy sailing on my way home in the little Laser. He did, he did comment on, it's

like, it's actually quite of a cool little car.

He's like, he's like considering work on where the where this mechanics located. They're in a very affluent area

and they just get Range Rovers and Mercs and stuff.

And I mentioned to you, Edward on Saturday evening where you know, the the lady, the lady before me when I went to pick up my car the other day just for brakes on her Merc and a few other bits and pizza caps like almost 4 1/2 grand and and and and she's just like, Yep, here, pay it.

And my car was like, you know, with, with everything 700 bucks, you know, So no, it was like 450 bucks.

Sorry. That's, that's how much it was.

So I was like, Yep, I can get why he was happy to to work on a cheaper car for a change. Thank you.

So that is pretty much it on my end.

I know I drove, I drove the typhoon.

We took it out on Saturday evening.

Edward Bunting, we went. Velvet glove.

It is, it is developing it actually it's it's quite quick in the passenger seat. You know, you figured how fast

it is. Edward Bunting does an Edward

Bunting thing and gave it gave it the beans and and it.

Was a little bit a. Little bit, but it was enough to

be like, oh, hang on a minute, that it is.

It is quite quick. So so yeah, that that was that

was quite fun. So it was good to get that out

driving Well, and yeah, that's pretty much it on my end, gentlemen. The buntings beans, I think that

we'll call them that from now on.

Drive that car far harder than I I do.

You know you. To be fair, Matt's used to it.

Yeah. It's when somebody that's

probably not used to it is giving it that level of means it. It would definitely scare.

Like I remember the first time I'm used to all levels of power, Alan. I've driven many cars.

No, I'm not doubting your ability yet.

It's just more about like when I sat in the passenger seat of the Rexy for the first time and I when.

I when I drove it right, was that time or no or because you were like, oh, OK, it's pretty quick.

When I when we took your when we took your ex a while ago, That was the first one. No, no, you, you, you took it

easy. Yeah.

This is another family friend who did not take it easy.

He told me he was being polite by taking it easy.

I'm like, what do you mean? How is Red Line taking it easy?

So, you know, and that scared the hell out of me.

That's when I was like, oh, yeah.

When when somebody else, especially a car that you're used to, yeah, somebody else is in charge.

It's, you know, it's quite a, quite a refreshing feeling in a way, but also, you know, it brings you into your own mortality sometimes, yeah. My friend Alex who has the the

V10M 6HE drives that incredibly hard everywhere.

Hot, cold, sideways, you name it, it does not get treated nicely and I chose. Because it's broken all the

time. Yeah, I mean, I think it would

still be broken even if he did treat it nicely, but.

That is, that is fair, he. Finally one day I I was driving

it and he was in the passenger seat and I gave it some stick.

He's like he was freaking out. He goes that feels way worse

than the passenger seat. I'm like, now you know how I

feel every time I get it it. Doesn't.

Matter behaviour. No, it's.

A near death experience every time I'm in it.

But anyway, gentlemen, that is car updates.

Let's move on to tonight's topic.

Now I wanted to discuss this point because there's been a lot of discussion about the 80s and I like synthwave, I like vapour wave, I like all the 80s Ness cars.

So all the waves and 80s design is now kind of big.

So it's like the the latest kind of form of, you know, car design. That's that's that's, you know,

been been reimagined. If Hyundai is taking it to the

next level, like I think I think Hyundai's current design language is bloody awesome. If, if they bring that envision

to to life, that would be a bloody hot car.

So my question to you guys is, do does design keep repeating itself? And I've been, I've been reading

up on about about it, watching a few videos looking at different things. And retro retrofuturism was a

big thing back in the early 2000s with the, with the Mustang, the, the SN 197 Mustang, the Mini Cooper, the Beatle, the even the PT crews are like bringing, bringing, you know, retro retro designs back. Do you think?

Because like, obviously like that was that from, you know, 60s ish designs and now they're now they're coming back with, with the 80s. They've completely skipped the

70s, which is, which is understandable for some people, but fair enough to fair enough to they're they're really bringing the 80s back. Do you think that designs are

going to keep doing this referring back to back to, you know, older designs? And, and if that's the case,

where do you think we're heading?

Do you think we're going to be in the 80s, eighties, you know, land for a bit and then possibly 90s or skip over 90s completely because the, because the 90s was like a golden era for, for Japanese cars, you know, with a, with a lot of some very famous Japanese cars that, that came from that era.

So do you think design is, do you think car companies are really focusing on the 80s currently?

And do you think that this is a good thing or a bad thing?

We're going, we're certainly going through a bit of a square phase at the moment, aren't we? It is starting to come back,

isn't it? Like stuff's quite oxy and

square in a lot of cases, which which was earlier 80s, probably later 80s to release the whole decade 90s.

I just remember early 90s was very curvy.

You know, Mazda 626 was a very round.

Rob's shaking his head. Ford Taurus is a very bad

example. But there was not one straight

line on that whole car. But stuff was, you know, the

Mazda 121 bubble, you know, very curvy, rolly organic shapes were big in that era. I think that will probably come

back. Well, the 121 before that was.

Looking at a square curvy, square curvy, square curvy, you know. I could tell you right now I

don't think the 90s will ever come back because they're all crap in the 90s, no. But it will, it will.

Well, think of that it. Will, But you say that, Edward,

but the 70s didn't come back, even though the 60s came back.

And then they kind of just skipped over like they're like, yeah, we're going to figure about that decade ever happened, then we're going to go straight to the 80s.

I. Think 70s is back in in houses

now. You're getting a bit of wood

panelling and a bit of brass and copper finishes and you know, some darker tones. It's sort of, you know, it's

there. Skips a decade.

I think it's even music's coming back.

If you've noticed, a lot of 80s music's being all rehashed.

Yeah, yeah, kids are wearing, kids are wearing Metallica T-shirts and Nirvana T-shirts and stuff.

And then? And then you ask him who the

lead singer of Nirvana is and they won't tell you because I don't. Know, I don't know, I don't know

like if you think about car cars through the decades, like 50s was sort of roundy, 60s was still pretty curvy, 70s was more square, 80s squared, 90s curvy, 2000s probably a bit less curvy.

And now, now we're back into Squarish again, like new ranges.

And yeah, they're all. Boxy box.

Santa Fe. Anaphase boxy, you know, you

know, like Jiminy boxy. I mean, that was always boxy,

but but you know, like there's, there's.

Fashion done. G class what else is a super

box? You know GWM tank 3 hundreds and

and that's Irish look is quite in.

Yeah, I'd, I'd, I agree with you, which is weird because a lot of these companies are trying to get more fuel efficient vehicles and being the, the efficiency of a fridge.

I don't think it's, you know, it's, it's ideal, but Hyundai's really going with that theme. They're really going with the

whole, you know, let's, let's bring this yeah 80s back.

And, and I, and I think they're, they're, they're really pioneering this, this their latest design language.

As I said, I really like what they're doing.

I know a lot of people don't like the new Santa Fe, but I think it's I think it's pretty cool.

It's basically a Volvo 240 waggon base.

It is quite literally just a higher version of it.

The the Ionic 5 and I think 5 NI think look epic.

I think that I think they're the best looking EV on the market that Envision 70, whatever that was, that was a bloody epic looking car and they're and they're they're kind of continuing that design language through through their range.

Ugly Yukona What? What did they?

Do to it the previous model was fantastic, wouldn't it?

Well, I've got a lady that works with me.

She's got the, she bought 1 brand new in like a minty kind of sagey green. And I looked at it, I had a good

look at the other. The inside's quite nice.

But the, the outside, I'm just, it hasn't grown on me yet.

I'm still, I'm still trying to get used to it.

I'm, I mean, the first one was polarising enough, but this one was, this one's even even more, even more so.

So, So do you think that it's, it just, so we'll, we'll ask about the 90s first. Do you think the 90s is going to

come back or do you reckon that it's they're going to completely skip that decade? No, I think that's skip it.

I'll skip it. Yeah.

All come back around, but. What did you say, Scotty?

I don't think it'll happen. Not the 90s.

So then if that's the case always, is design just going to repeat itself then? So like, OK, they're going to

get to the 2000 and all the cars going to look the same anyway.

So they're going to go repeat back to back to the 60s, back to the 80s. And like I, I say, design does

repeat itself and it, and it does for, for, for, for a big part of a big part of, you know, all the industries in terms of design. But in terms of the car

industry, the car, like, as, as we've discussed before, the car industry are just cheap. Like they, they just follow

what, you know, what they, what the other company's doing and go, go from that. So do you think we're going to

get more 60s designs again or we're going to, it's just going to keep going over and over and over?

I think in two ways. So you got your mainstream and

then you've got your hybrid hydrogen vehicles, which are going to get more and more out there and futuristic.

But you say that, Rob, but like, for example, Tesla's designs and everything I with, you know, that were considered, you know, a bit futuristic Y back when they first started, no one's kind of went with that. And now they kind of look

contemporary. You know he like that like a.

Mazda 6 hatch, Yeah. Harsh on mast and but anyway.

Ash on method but yeah a Mazda 6 hatch and a Tesla Model 3 and not that different to look at. You look at that, they got the

same design. I know what you mean.

But when you look at Audi, they've got all the, you know, steering that slides from left to right and and you've got suicide doors or gull wing that open up so the interior can be reversed. Internally, the whole car is

just a different concept. It's on a a skateboard platform,

just totally different concept to anything that you've probably seen. I was just going to say I was, I

was thinking about this topic today because I've just started doing some work somewhere where I haven't worked before after a, a new dealership. One of the guys in the business

is not well at the moment. So I'm sort of helping out.

But I went out and it was the to Clayton to the BYD distribution centre. I think it's part of Coffee

Ford. I think in Danyon, you know, so

one of these, they obviously own a BYD franchise and all that sort of thing. They're on track to deliver 650

new cars this month. That's big.

That's a lot of cars. They had hundreds of Byds out

there. Now they're all named after

things that come out of the sea. So there was.

Like dolphin and just pouring? Yeah.

I don't know where the Ato comes in, but I do interior repairs to cars and there are a couple of marks on some of them and I haven't looked at them closely, but my wordy naughty looking in those. There's a lot going on.

There's a lot of different textures, there is a lot of different colours, there's a lot of different design features that I haven't seen before in cars.

So, and I've sort of recoiled a bit, you know, especially some of the colours I think on how am.

I going to match this. How are we?

Going to sort that one. But but yeah, I mean, it's

interesting is, is the stuff that we find.

I mean, kudos for, for do try and do something different.

I mean, they've got door pockets that look like guitar strings and things like that on them. That as I said, I mean, I'm a

bit late to the bit late to the party, but they've been out for a little while now. But they're they're some of the

most distinctive interiors I think I've seen in years in cars. Don't say they're not attractive

to my eyes necessarily, but the people, people are buying them in in droves. So yeah, I, I, I don't know

where if that's going to be a thing that, that people that they're just going to get more and more out there.

It's funny how we've talked before on the podcast about how some manufacturers have gone to the extreme and now have had to sort of reel it back in a bit in with, you know, actual switch gear to actually control functions of the car rather than, than screens. Because not only are they

distracting, it can take you four or five stages to get to where you actually want to do rather than just turn a volume control knob or a fan speed switch, you know, like.

So yeah, it's interesting when design gets in the way.

I think some of the things we sort of see these days I, I really wonder sort of 10/15/20 years if if they'll be repeated.

I've also just shared in the chat at Pebble Beach in California last month, Honda actually had the HPX concept that had been restored. It was a pin and Farina and

Honda joint design from 1984. So that's what that's 40 years

now 40 years old. I look at photos of the car.

It's actually quite reminiscent of their their robotic lawn mower that they've actually, it's sort of.

Pardon the pun, David Prince, pardon the.

Pun. It actually looks pretty like a

big version of that, but. Looks like a lady's shoe.

It does. It's got, it's got that sort of

stiletto Y sort of sharpness to it, doesn't it?

But yeah, not an attractive car. And if it had a, you know, a a

well, it's got a Pinnofarina design, A component to it.

But if it had an Italian Giugiario or Gear Studios or something like that, you wouldn't you, you, you wouldn't think that it wasn't from from Italy or somewhere like that.

But that was interesting. That was the first Japanese car

to have the first Japanese concept car to have the.

Display at. Pitbull Beach.

So did that. When you said 80s design, I

thought of that straight away. It's interesting though, because

you're right. BYOD, I sat in there.

This sedan, I forgot. What's that called?

That's this. It's a seal.

It's a seal. Yeah.

I didn't mind that one too much because like I sat in an auto and there was blue stuff and yellow stuff and green stuff.

I was like what am I looking at? There's a lot going on.

Lots of colours and they're they're you're right, they're probably one of the most distinctive interiors I've ever started, to be fair. And the, you're right, how

they've looked like guitar strings.

Yeah, you actually pluck them and they and they sound like a different key on a, on a guitar, which is, which is quite, which is kind of a cool feature, probably making up for the like a noise that the car actually makes.

But the the like, I think shock value does sell in in a lot of ways, but and I don't think they're really taking in taking into account design from anywhere.

I think they're just kind of adapting their own thing, which is actually really cool. And it's something to be, I

think respected. I think they're, I think

they're, they're kind. Of bold.

It's bold. Absolutely.

It's bold. They're beating to the sound of

their own drum. Yeah.

So they they're they're they're really listening to to what they want to do. And and they're selling cars and

they're and they're, they're, they're doing quite well.

Like they're not, they're not doing well.

The, the on the other hand, is like, you know, partisan, especially like, you know, with this, with this little 80s resurgence over the last, you know, three to four to five to six years, really now it's been it's, it's saying that the cars are like we're they're getting squared off again, you know, and, and there's cars that have always been squared IEG waggons, as you alluded to earlier, but you know, they're really bringing boxy back and they're, they're, I think they're making it work well, But do you think in 10 years time they'll be so out of date and like they'll be bringing back designs from their

60s and 70s and, and, and what have you?

So this is my next question. Do you think they're going to be

bringing, rehashing those other designs to because like, like, what else do we do at this point?

If they're, they're brought back the 60s and brought back the 80s, what are they going to bring back next?

You know so. But the thins of the 50s, do you

reckon they'll come? Back.

I doubt it. So I think.

They can because of pedestrian safety.

You know, that was always. Sustained but.

That's too some some design just can't come back.

Pop up headlights. You can't.

Come back, headlines. Regulation allowed shame.

Certain things just can't make a comeback at all due to, you know, the current changes in, you know, in what's allowed anymore. So we won't see exactly, you

know, that sort of stuff. But you never do.

It's always an evolution because you brought like, you know, a full on AC10 style, you know Ute truck, like you wouldn't be able to get that passed. There'd be so many weird

loopholes that you know, or not loopholes regulation that the AC10 style truck would just violate what?

What are you showing us there of?

Aston Martin A future design. So.

What's what's it leading towards?

Is it leading towards a six 50s? Maybe styling?

Is it about 50s with the front end dash to be fair?

Maybe the front end. Very sleek.

Yeah, yeah. Very low roof.

I can see you in the background. Are you watching your MX5?

I have had a look at it. I thought Alan seems very

distracted by something. I was, I was looking up some

basically 80s and 90s design cars, maybe the 80s wedges and stuff. I'm like again, we all we like

wedges would be cool as to have, but again, people want a big old car space so you know. But I think we've got 2 car

designs going at the moment. I feel we've got 80s and we've

got that whole sporty car sign with all little add ONS attached to it. Yeah, little fake bits put onto

it and little sharp edges put into the front grills and on the side just to try and give that little sporty hit to it.

So then it doesn't matter what you're driving, could be a base model, but you're still going to have those little sharp edges and sharp lines put into it, little add ONS.

I'm going to add to that you, you've got, you've got that and you've got your, your 80s and then you've got BMW who are just in their own world currently because who knows what the hell they're doing. Yeah, when you say that, that's

going to be a Hyundai future design.

Yeah. And that looks like a Triumph TR

7 or something it. Does it was a little bit it

does. I've heard that I've heard

DeLorean, I've heard I've heard a few different.

It's it's taken a lot of design cues out of out of out of things like that. So I I really like that if if

that's a real if they bring that to life, that'll be bloody epic.

That'll be a cool car. That'll probably be the coolest

car on sale, I reckon genuinely. But yeah, so all right, so

Scott, you you've made up a good point about about the the the current, you know, state of of what's on what's on designing in what what's in design at the moment.

What's next is my last question before we.

Yeah. What's next?

I feel you're still going to have what we've got now that'll continue on just those soft edge vehicles like your Mazda.

I mean Mazda, if you look at their whole range, it's pretty much the same. I feel like that shape will

continue on because it's just aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Yeah, even the new cars with

sort of the new developed new designs in perish when we saw at the museum were were extensions of that design.

Yeah, it's just pleasing to the eye.

That's all they want to go for. There's no point going to be

crazy. You're going to have your crazy

cars that are going out there a bit, you know, to try and capture your attention a bit more, but.

They're very safe. They're very safe.

Yeah, I feel you're going to have a lot of safe, safe vehicles still. I feel like retro and all that's

going to last longer. It's still going to keep on

going, especially in considering we're moving into more hybrid and electric. So they're really going to push

the boundaries on that because they want electric to be crazy looking, they want it to stand out, they want it to be like the shoes that kids wear these days. I feel if.

The cyber truck had not been as disastrous as it ended up being, you know, with with it's myriad of what ownership issues among the actual company founder cutting fingers.

Yeah, yeah. And, you know, other things

there would be, yeah, more of a future for like wild electric trucks because electric, you know, mutes is not going anywhere. That's just going to be more and

more because people have made the arguments of well, when you start towing with the range drops.

And so I'm like, have you seen the people that drive the utes around? They're not towing.

They're not doing anything. They may tow a boat once in a

while, but they're jet skiing. They are pavement princesses.

They are. And you know, nothing beats an

electric pavement Princess that weighs.

AE40 tonnes. 40 yeah weighs a hell of a lot and can accelerate

fairly quickly and will be killing you know pedestrians in the near future in in the CBD in EU you know so but.

Can I, can I just add to that? Like the cyber truck is a clear

example of when design goes wrong.

Yeah, because, because I don't know, like they've tried to be 80s and hunk in in kind of and and kind of weird with that.

Like, you know, they're trying to that's just trying to be an 80s design, but they've completely missed the mark like the end, the Envision 70 and the even even the Ionic 5.

That is more of an 80s design and pure 80s design than that car will ever be. That's the cyber truck.

Well. Whenever I think of cyberpunk,

it's always a dystopian yeah future, right?

And when you consider a car that can decapitate a person, I feel that that fits well in the dystopian future where like, you know, it's, it's it's like Mad Max, but you got electric cars and you know, that sort of stuff.

If somebody's going to, you know, point a gun at you, you want something that can accelerate very quickly and just lob the air offs. It'll be imagine me being

transported back into into time. Put Marie Antoinette into the

guillotine. No.

You mean the cyber truck? Yes, I'm in the cyber truck.

You've been sentenced to death by cyber truck.

So the the best story I've heard about the cyber track, Did you hear about the raccoons breaking into them?

No. No.

Yeah, they reckon there are raccoons breaking into the back of them because they think they're skips.

You know, they open skips and, and like pins of food out of them. So they're chewing away all the

the the bits that trim around the the tail where the tailgate slides open. That's brilliant.

That is actually the best thing I've ever heard.

Oh God. I think we've got to be, I think

we've got to be wary on what we see at the moment too, because it's a lot of concept cars, yeah.

And it's very rare that a concept car comes out.

What you see is what you get. Yeah.

Concept cars are all about promises, promises that are never kept. Well, no.

Look at the Subaru I guess. The Cyber Truck is exactly the

way it looked. Yeah, unfortunately.

The. Cybertruck was a big F you by

Elon saying oh you, you don't think this is going to be real?

This is going to be real. Cybertruck is like, well you

see, I said some things, so now God help me, I'll drown this company from my pride. You wanted the concept card.

This is it. There's been some concepts that

have that have been pretty close to or virtually, you know, and, and they've been on to either be a complete flop or a success, but. Yeah, Audis had like the weed

shark skin doors and. There.

Was no. I was like, wow, that's cool.

And I was like, no, that's happening.

I feel like every Citroen's a concept car.

Yeah, currently, like all their, all their, like the cactus and all that with the bubbles in the door.

Like that's a concept car. That's not a real car.

Or they're going from Australia now.

No more Citroen they. Have left the building, Citroen

has left the country. Ed, what do you think is nice

for Design for? Because Scotty reckons that's

going to be a few things. But what about you, Ed?

What do you think? Design's heading, I think.

There's always going to be retro elements.

There's too much that's sort of gone before us and the more manufacturers are the same tech wise.

What's your differentiator? Well, for some of them, luckily,

luckily enough, they've got a great heritage and they'll they'll really want to, they want to sort of cash in on that heritage. So there are things that are a

bit bespoke Honda or like the new Honda E that we don't get here. But you know, the dash was this

wood grain with this beautiful screen that had a little aquarium on it, but the wood grain was very like the early Civic. So I think that there's, yeah,

there's always going to be retro elements to some brands.

I suppose the ones that'll be slightly more interesting are the brands that don't have any heritage to play on.

Like you know, we did a little study at work recently and there's 35 EVs, most of them out of China in that sort of mid SUV type segment. Only a couple few of them are

here now, but there's there's plenty more coming.

And I counted 35 when we printed out all the pictures of them for a bit of a work project and. Could you tell the difference

between them? No, and, and, and I stood there

and I said to my colleagues, OK, so say I've got, you know, 60, five, $70,000 and I'm looking for a middish sized SUV that's a pure EV. I've got 35 of these things to

choose from. What am I basing my decision on?

You know, like other than one being the cheapest, none of these things have got any heritage to them.

I've got no brand affiliation with any of them because we've never had them here before. Other than maybe you might say,

Oh well, an X Pang shares a platform with a a Volvo and a Pollster. It's got some sort of

credibility because they've been out a couple of years.

Maybe that might be someone, but.

You know that most people wouldn't know that.

Most people. Wouldn't have a clue.

And what are you basing your decision on buying wise?

Let's say they were all 60 grand.

I'm standing there looking at an X Ping and a this and a that and ABYD and what you know, I think those brands will be real interesting. Unless you're the cheapest, what

are you going to do? So you know with the, my reason

for mentioning that is I think the traditional brands, Mercedes, Bentley, BMW, Audi, Skoda, whoever have some heritage to play on. These guys don't.

And so it'll be interesting to see what they do.

Design wise, you know they're. Doing it a bit, look at BYD

like. Yeah, they've sort of got

nothing to fall back on in that sense.

So it's an interesting, it's an interesting, it's.

Got all days where they just copy a European company.

Yeah, look, I think there might be an element of that.

Go to the motor show, bring a camera, take a picture, take measurements for everything you know, just.

Yeah, there, there there may well be an element of copying.

I mean that's what happened in the in the in the 60's, the Japanese came on board and, and copied the Europeans and built some beautiful looking cars. But they, there's there's no

denying where the styling sort of cues came from.

But yeah, I think like colours, you know, colours come in and out of fashion, curves and straight lines come in and out of fashion. And I, I think we're going to

constantly just see a cycle of that.

Yeah, I think like David said, you know, these companies are having to go crazy because they have to like they don't have the pedigree. Like Hyundai to an extent is

still relatively like a new player in the game in terms like they've been around for a very long time.

But they're, you know, they're their oldest car is the pony, which is like a late 70s, early 80s design.

So, so their their, their ironic 5 is kind of based on that.

And, and they're and they're going with that.

So they're, they're, they're looking at their heritage from 40 years ago, but like BYD, they don't have one.

So they're, they're trying to make an end result.

Like let's put as much tech and as much craziness as we can.

Like you look at something like the Porsche 9/11 and I think they've done a really good job of keeping that car relevant, but keeping the heritage. But that's AI wouldn't want to

You've sort of got a, you've got a very loyal fan base.

I do too. And I think that was a tough

that was incredibly iconic and very sort of rugged and agricultural, you'd say in pretty much every way.

But the market for $130,000, you know, SUV is not that now so much. So they had to kind of nod to

the heritage, but also make it safe and attractive for the real buyer. Cause an old Defender buyer in

1956 was a farmer who wanted a tool.

The current Defender buyer is someone from S Sierra who owns an advertising agency. So very, very different, you

know, users of this thing that's kind of maintained itself for 70 years. So it was, I think they've done

a really nice job of that. It it's a, it's recognisable as

a Defender, but it's very, very modern where it needs to be.

So yeah, it's not a paddock tool anymore, no question.

Even though it's capable off road, it is not an agricultural tool. It's a luxury full drive you.

Feel that they could have kept in the lines of the Ineos, maybe where they've. Yeah, the Ineos has kind of

filled that gap a bit where it is a bit more rugged and agricultural looking and right, they could have done that.
