LIVE
What's up everybody? Welcome to the Smoke and Tire podcast. Today's episode is as
always brought to you by Off the Record. We love Off the Record and you guys do
too or at least you keep telling me over and over in the DMs and the emails
that Off the Record saved your backside from a big old problem out there. Here's
how it works. If you are driving out there in your car you could be doing
basically anything and then you get pulled over and you get a ticket. It
happens you know but what you don't do is plead guilty. You never plead guilty.
You don't have to plead guilty. It won't just make it go away. Instead what you do
is get off the record. You go to offtherecord.com slash TST. That'll
get you 10% off all legal services booked through off the record and they
will fight that case all the way to the end. If they don't get those points off
your record you don't have to pay. It is like that offtherecord.com slash TST.
I'm using them every time I need them. They're right there in my back pocket.
Always taking care of me and our TST fan base so make sure you write that one
down offtherecord.com slash TST. Alright folks on this show we are getting a
trailer and have to figure out what we're gonna tow it with. Plus we study
crash statistics on Angeles Crest Highway to find out if it's the
enthusiast's fault or the commuter's and what is pumping the most recent auction
market prices. Is it just people being rich or is it people being rich and doing
crimes. But hi everybody this is a show welcome to it. It's it's been a nice
little week here in Los Angeles other than me getting some kind of stomach
bug for 12 hours. That was fun right after off-roading and maybe like yeah
yeah it's probably a couple hours later. Yeah came on fat it was like a squall
come on you fast and leave you fast. Brown squall. That's a I haven't watched
it's been too long since I've watched Captain Ron. I think that deserves a
rewatch. I haven't seen that since when I was a kid. Oh Captain Ron is a fucking
that's a quality film. That's Kurt Russell it is absolute fighter. What's your face?
Kate Hudson's mom. Yeah Goldie Hawn. Goldie Hawn. No. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. No I mean I
know that Goldie Hawn is Kate Hudson's mom but I was I was because they also did
overboard together. Oh jeez. So they're just like you're great at sailing boat
movies. Let's make another one. They threw Martin short in there too. That's always a
good choice. Yeah he's amazing. So there's some things some things happened the last
couple days even though kind of nothing happened the last couple days. We're
getting a trailer. We got we got to deal with this company Brian James trailers
and they're paying us in trailer. This is great. So you guys are going to hear some
ads. Please listen to the ads from Brian James trailers that are coming. But but we're
getting this a race sport trailer which is a fucking sick. That's it right there. The
enclosed trailer. That's a sweet rig. We're getting that thing. It tilts for makes for
low loading better. It's got the side opening doors and we even got the one with all wanting
on the side. It's got the side door. It's got the side just work thing. The side doors the
move and it's got we got one with an awning on the side. So it's like a canopy so we can hang
out outside under the car into there and stuff shaded. Whoa. Pretty sweet dude. Right. Yeah.
And you said we needed a truck but this person is rendering. Yeah towing with a disco. That looks
like a discovery. Yeah. No. I think I believe this trailer weighs like twenty five hundred
pounds. So I think if you're towing a light car then you we wouldn't need much much car at all.
We do need something to tow with at some point trying to figure out what that is this the
website which is for me and the UK because this company is originally UK based although they
distribute in America. They're towing it with a discovery in this one they're trying towing
an Audi R8 with a discovery and if they can do that then we certainly don't need much. Well
they're good at the caravan thing and they only have pickup trucks there. I haven't. Well yeah
but if we we don't fucking if they don't need a pickup truck we don't need to pick up truck. No
they don't. The American way is you get an F 350. Oh yeah. And you tow two motorcycles. So you
know. So the other night I went to dinner with Sergio and his family and I learned that Sergio's
mom raises horses in Malibu and Sergio's mom who I don't want to guess how old she is but she's
the mother of someone in his fifties. So right. So Sergio's mom raises horses shows them whatever
and I was talking to Sergio about this trailer and he goes oh you should talk to my mom about
a tow rick. And I was like oh yeah. And I go I miss a Ciderman like you know I'm here's what
we're doing like what should she's like I only tow with the Cummins. She's like I've had I have this
many and and she's talking about and and she her ranch. I don't want to say where it is but it's
on a it's in Malibu and it's on a road that it's right. OK. Yeah. You know what I just said. OK
it's on that road at the top. OK. Yeah. And I was like so what's your main rig. And she goes my
primary is a Dodge thirty five hundred. Excuse me. Dodge fifty five hundred towed her home with a
horse trailer. Wow. It's 60 feet long and she drives that motherfucker full of horses up and down
that road. Isn't that some shit. Wow. So it's like one of these things. This is enormous. Oh I didn't
want to go to you. Yeah. Yeah. It's that with a horse trailer. That is enormous. Fucking crazy. Yeah. Yeah.
I mean it's like it's like an RV. You would rent the RV body that you would rent. Yeah. But with you
know giant truck full of powertrain. Yeah. And it's like a trailer. And I'm with the road that we're
talking about is like one of the three or four tightest roads in the Malibu canyons. Yeah. If you ask me to
drive this up that road without a trailer you can't do that. It's yeah. So I was like OK you know Mrs.
Siderman that might be like a little overkill for what I was like. What about for just like a single car
you know trailer a regular trailer. And she was like you should probably get you know twenty five hundred. And I
was like really I'm only towing like max max like seven eight thousand pounds but more more like six maybe
even five. Yeah. And she was like you should still get a diesel. I kind of I mean I always think having more
tow than you need is nice. You know when you if you're going up like the grapevine or something. Yeah. And you
add throttle and you don't even feel the weight of the trailer through the truck just like the sturdiness of
the frame and all that stuff. I mean that's optimal. So what you're saying is Bentley. Definitely a Bentley. That is
not what I'm saying. I would like to still get paid and not spend all the money this year on our tow vehicle. I
didn't use the average horse weighs about a thousand pounds. So she's towing the horse. Well she if she has four
horses back there plus the trailer maybe she's around six to eight thousand pounds and she needs all that that
power. I mean yeah optimally but also like how much time will we spend towing like that. That's very
easy doing this a lot like I don't I don't want to buy like like this isn't like I'm not doing this today but
like I kind of want to buy something that can be used as a fucking car. Yes. Like something much like the most
regular thing I can get not the what if I have to do 90 over the grapevine. Of course that's not like I mean maybe
once but like there are press trucks if we need such things. So like it's more like what kind of like SUV or
you know half ton or maybe even like smaller than half ton. Like I was like kind of Maverick tow this fucking
thing or like is it a Ranger. Like what is the like pretty much what is the most the minimum vehicle I need to be
able to like tow this thing. Ford Maverick max towing is 4,000 pounds. That's a no. That's a no. What's the eco
boost. Yeah. Yeah that's a no. Well let's see. That was AI announced. The drive says a stock Maverick and tow
8,000. Really. Yeah. But it's still but the title is but it's still a bad idea. So you want something a little more
than that. All right. Well we will do some homework. We have to do some towing homework. Like I think I think
we're going to get but because not only because now we have now I have Willow Springs membership. Now I have all
the reasons to play with non street legal vehicles and or get potentially sketchy and unreliable vehicles to and
from the racetrack. Welcome to my world. It's quite fun and terrible. Yeah but this thing is pretty light pretty
aerodynamic and it tilts. It's got the winch in it. It's it's it's pretty should be pretty pretty useful. It's
pretty sick. Hell yeah. That's I got black. Cool. Oh they have a they have one right here. Yeah. Nice. Yeah. It's a
nice looking rig. It is. It will it'll be hot. Well if it's black it can absorb all the heat. So that's a good
point. Yeah. That's too late to. I mean people have black trailers in California. I thought it looked cool but it
does look cool. Maybe that's I wonder if the trade off. Well I think it depends on how much time you're going to spend
in the trip. Like if you want to use it as a place to get out of heat you know if you're out there at Willow and
top you have buildings there. There's buildings there. It's like if we go somewhere else if we go somewhere else I
don't know if we'll be hanging out by the trailer unless we go side by side. Right. You know exactly if we because
that's because that's why it opens up like demos for like because if we have our own trailer true we can call up
Polaris or whoever. Yeah they have these things that was always the hold back. Yeah you can come get them if you've
got a trailer. Yeah well we don't have a trailer. Now we do. You see I want to try one of those giant can't
things. I'm saying. Yeah we can go to the desert. We can fucking do stupid things. Right. Yeah. Hmm. So if anyone out
there toes like a single car enclosed with like an issue a more a mostly regular SUV or pick up truck and
really likes it. Yeah. Let us know in the comments. Let us know in the comments. Don't don't don't send me a hundred
emails. I just will look. Yeah we'll look and we'll see what's around and like but we may we were going to have to
drag things around. We also are going to have to bother Graham for a long term legends car. Guys support is coming
in today from true work. Winter job sites don't mess around. It could be freezing in the morning wet around
noon and then windy and cold in the afternoon. It cuts right through that cheap gear. You need work wear that
performs when it's brutal out there. True work builds performance work wear like it matters because it does just
look at Zach in this podcast. He's wearing his true work hoodie or he at least did this morning when we went out
to test drive the Ineos on a top of a mountain and it was very cold and windy. True work was founded by a trade
professional who was done with wet heavy gear slowing him down and true work set out to make work wear that
keeps the pros comfortable capable and ready for whatever the day throws at them. While brands like Carhart and
Dickies focus on traditional cotton based gear that gets heavy when wet. True work uses advanced performance
fabrics developed for extreme outdoor conditions. Now engineered specifically for trade work. It's moisture wicking
it's wind resistant and insulated with fabrics that keep you comfortable and mobile all day even in the harshest
winter conditions. There's over 50,000 five star reviews from pros on trust pilot every trade and climate real
feedback from electricians plumbers and contractors working through brutal winters. So I've got the true work hoodie.
I got the true work pants and although I am not an on the job site pro I work outside a lot and they are great for
keeping me comfortable keeping me warm when I need it cool when I need it and dry when I need it. I love the true
work pants and the hoodie. It's awesome. Don't let cheap gear slow you down this winter. Upgrade your day with
work wear built like it matters get 15% off your first order at true work dot com with code tire. That's
a lot of value in a in borrowing a legends car for a year. Well we want to be ambassadors for the legend car
we can get a lot of times and shit. Yeah, the Virginia City Hill Climb I think is with a little fun with the altitude
there because I think at the top it would be like you have to put a turbo on it. Sure. Add an axle. I don't think it
would matter this thing that thing doesn't weigh anything. It does not. All right. Altitude of 5000 feet. It's not so bad. Yeah, it's
okay. Sure. Oh, it's a it's a climb from 48 to 63. Yeah, that's all right. That's like we are testing.
That's like an angel's crest plus. Yeah. Yeah, that's no big deal. So that'll be fun. And I'm getting I'm getting
manufacturers used to the fact that I would be taking their cars to the track. Some are like, OK, is this going to be all
the time? I'm like, maybe, maybe. I mean, so do the testing. Yeah. So the Maserati is sending the GT2 Stradale, which I
know you got to have a go in. Yeah, right. Yep. You liked it mostly, right? I did like it mostly. But I my takeaway was
the regular MC 20, I think gets you 90% of the way to the what the stradale gets. And the experience I had there,
which was very limited in terms of lap time, but it felt like the stradale did not do the track job that it was trying
to do. And then on the road, I thought the regular one road better looked better and gave you all the speed and stuff
anyway. Okay. But maybe, you know, further testing is needed. Fair assessment. Further testing is needed. Nine laps.
I mean, that's not a lot. It is not. And that was and we end the PR person for USA argued successfully to get us more
time than was originally allotted. But it was still very small. Yeah, that's not a lot. And a scary smooth. Yeah. Also,
yeah. We'll see. That'll be fun. And go take it out to willow and drive on the street. One more street time. That'll
be fun. Oh, I also I booked the I booked a Dodge Charger six pack for the for the road and track event in the
desert in April. I was like, we could do a little vanishing point vibe. There you go. You know, I saw Miguel up at
up in good vibes with the press car. And with the big wheels on it. It's not a bad looking car, actually. And I sat in
it. I was like, Oh, there's a big boy. This is a good open desert vehicle. Yeah. I think they're I think it's a great
looking design. Come on. I think that car I think the car looks good with the big wheels on it. The big the some of
the the base electric ones with the small wheels look really bad. But if you put the right wheels in the right
color, not bad. Yeah. But I'm excited. I'm actually kind of excited to try that for 1400 miles. It'll be
sweet and quick. And yeah, it is a good road trip vehicle. It is. And we get some some laps at Las Vegas Motor
Speedway. Okay. Yeah, that'll be interesting. Yeah, like true. I'm not trying to be disrespectful to the charge. I
haven't driven it. So I'm wondering how it will do on a racetrack. The last one I drove was like, you know, one of
the old Hellcats. Oh, yeah, like a manual and stuff. And the the the weight balance was always interesting on
racetracks.
It might be slidey. That would be anything like the last one. It would be terrible. It would be terrible if it was
slidey. What a nightmare. Couldn't have any fun doing that. It's like an America's Supra now. Right. Because it's
in line six, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah. That's 550 horsepower. It's a three J. It's not even a two J. Bigger than a
two J. Dodd would come out with an engine and be like, it's it's called a four JD. Yeah. It was the hurricane
engine. That would be the slightly Mago one. They'd call it four JD. Because of why JD Vans. Oh, there you go. Okay.
Took me a second. Yeah, I mean, well, because that's it wouldn't be a very good joke. You'd have to explain
it. It is a three liter. It's a three liter, right? They could call it the three J. That would be fucking that would be
so trolley and fun. It would. But then if it didn't hold like 900 horsepower, it would be that's true. You know what I
mean? That's like, it's like calling your shot. Yeah, everyone go okay. All right, right. Let's see what you
got. Let's get let's get a little let's get one of these on here. Let's get a fucking but this bath
called a Terpsky. Let's get a fucking that's when it gets real big a Terpsky
90 millimeter. By the way, fucking Habibi hit me up and and informally invited us to a race and we're gonna go race with
cletus in Connecticut in July, Stafford Stafford Motor Speedway, Crown Vic race, the smoking tire. Are we is it two
drivers to a car or one driver gets four to a car? I think it is. Okay. Stafford Motor Speedway. I thought it was like a
team. Maybe it is it. I don't know. I'll look it up. I have absolutely no idea how it works. All I know is we
have a couple of racing driving events coming up that we know very little information about. Yeah, I'm excited for the ice
race. But I think they would have sent me like a driver information thing by now. Like I have absolutely no idea what level of
like safety equipment or anything I have to bring yet. Where's what are you looking for? I want to look at just an overhead
picture of Stafford. Oh, just like Google satellite or Google maps. It's just a fucking oval. It just looks like a whatever
you know, a half mile oval. There is a sort of an infield ish road coursey kind of thing or there's like, at least some
bus stops and some chicanes that I guess you could sort of use. I'm not sure how you would make that work. Actually, those might
just be return roads and such. But yeah, it's an oval. It's gonna be fun. That's gonna be so sick. Right. Yeah. I'm really,
really, really excited. I think we're gonna finish. You have an extensive Crown Vic experience. Well, it depends on what year
we're getting, you know, because they switched to a better steering system. We need a dot too. I think it was. We do need a
dot too. It matters. The steering ratio got a lot better. I think they switched from ball to rack and pinion. I mean, I chose mine for a
reason. Yeah. Oh, yeah, it does. Yeah, that does make a big difference. It won't matter if it was a road course, it would matter
more. What was the one from all cars three? Was that the good one? That wasn't the good one. That was like two years
before that was cheaper. So yours had better steering. Mine had way better steering. Mine had way better steering. That does
matter. It's very important. We spent 25 minutes crapping on the inios for this. Oh, by the way, you said that's a patron DM'd you,
right? And said that there is a software update that allows you to permanently disable ADAS on a Grenadier. Is that true? That is true.
And then I saw other comments that said it's not available in the 2026. Would that mean it's only available last year, but not this
year? Yes. So I don't know. This year is an updated year. And one of the things that's been updated is that because last
years didn't have this. So I mean, the comments seemed conflicted, but a couple of people were like, there is a thing where you
can be with the newest one. I don't think it is. I think they had to get rid of that and make it the three taps annoying bullshit that
they do. But fuck someone out there like, I mean, someone that's like a tuner, like is going to have an entire business in tuning to
fucking defeat this shit. Yeah, I would not want to own that. I would worry so much about the liability of if someone hits someone
and then they go, ADAS was disabled by, you know, it's like the people that were disabling all the diesel truck things, they got in
trouble until they didn't get in trouble. So yeah, all you have to do is make a... Well, you're betting on the unadministration liking what
you're doing. And that's quite a gamble. But speaking of Ineos, because we're also talking about the silly name.

And I was informed that it comes from this. The Fusiliers is an infantry regiment of the British army, part of the
Queens Division, to battalion. Okay. Okay. So it's, it's, it's, it comes from something
sure, tough. Sure. It does sound kind of silly.
Yeah, I mean, you, when you have the word sillier in it, and just to me, invites a certain type of being laughed at.
Yeah, it's like, if you're choosing a name for your kid, and you, you start to run through like, what are the second
graders going to rhyme this with? And they'll find something doesn't really matter what your name is, you know, except for
like one of the Elan, maybe that's why Elan's kids are named the letters and shit. That is a nut they do not going to be able
to make fun of them.
They can't rhyme it with anything.
That's the most plausible explanation yet for that. When I was a boy, they made fun, they, they rhymed Elan with all
kinds of terrible things.
Called me flan.
Well, that is a tough one to Elan is a hard one. It is. It's like rhymes with orange unless you're Eminem.
I mean, it's the end of felon, but outside of that.
Pretty good. I mean, let's see. That's tough.
It is tough. But I, but, but this is the perfect way.
I mean, they would just call him Elan fuck. That's what you do. Because his last name is Musk. And when you're second grade,
you can get there pretty quickly.
Yeah, Elan fuck.
Leave those in the comments.
But X 972 is that's pretty hard.
That's pretty the most Elan reaction.
Like trying to, you know, fix some very, very small problem by doing some huge embarrassing thing that just fucks up the
person's life forever.
That's the that's how he works.
And then he gets really rich.
Oh, I think I think I may have found the perfect interior fabric for the Mercedes.
I was looking on actually the website where I got the fabric for the Mustang back in the day.
I found some some bangers, nice, some real bangers.
So I ordered some samples up, got to see it in person to make sure the colors like match up right.
But like stoked.
Are they all bus fabrics?
No, most they're all outdoor patio furniture fabrics.
Yeah, the bus fabric looks amazing.
I never like love that it felt like a fucking bus when you touched it.
Well, it feels like micro fleece almost like a fleece jacket, but it's like hard.
It's hard.
And also it this is something you don't learn on Instagram about someone's car.
That bus fabric, when it got hot, like off gas, like a smell that wasn't great.
OK, it probably eventually would stop.
And you just just decide to last 50 years.
Yeah, but I never had those in that issue with the stuff from the Mustang,
which was outdoor patio furniture stuff.
It felt more like regular cloth, but had like UV resistance and stuff in it.
So I sort of went back to that.
Cool, because it's convertible.
I'm going to leave it with the top part down all the time.
You have to make sure the fabric is pliable enough that the upholsterer can stitch it, right?
You know, if it's very rigid, yeah, I mean, the bus fabric was fine.
It's meant for going in seats.
But yeah, some of it is like that hard plastic stuff.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, no, they literally they do they do have an umbrella fabric section
because people get custom umbrellas made.
But like, yeah, I'm getting when you get a sample so you can feel it and go,
hey, can you fucking stitch this?
Cool. Yeah, it's going to be very fun.
And it's like if it works, I think it's going to work.
It's like the goal is because you're talking about a four seat car that's going to be all
it's black, black carpet, black.
So you got to break that up.
But, you know, in a way that like is a third color and maybe a fourth color
that also works with red, black and silver.
And so I sent it to Shant and he was like, oh, shit, I think that's the one.
That's the fucking that's the shit right there.
So red.
It would like brighten up the interior in like just the right kind of way.
Fucking I'm excited.
That's going to be.
I mean, I now know the benefit of the interior sparkle.
Thanks to you. So I get it.
Yeah. Are you are you still happy with your aggressive?
And I get so many comments about it and I open the door.
I'm like, this is awesome.
And it's I didn't realize how essential it was, but it's definitely inspired by
your cars instead of just having black leather.
It just makes you happy, doesn't it?
Yeah, just just like just that like a bit of whimsy.
It's nice. Yeah.
And a lot of people really pay a lot of attention how the outside of their car
looks, not realizing like what a change like even just doing the inserts or just
doing like one or two little changes of the interior can make.
Yeah, especially if you put a bucket in your car that has, you know,
the removable thing, 100 percent spend the money to get that insert done custom.
Like it probably will be a few hundred dollars because it's one or two pillows.
But your car will stand out and it'll be it'll show that, you know,
you've individualized it for you and it's not just like the same seat other people have.
Remember, I did it with a Corvette like back in the day and it looked it looked
great with the sparkle seats. It just made it all match. Yeah.
And then you can buy fabrics like the play.
The website I'll plug them is modern dash fabrics dot com and just start
with the outdoor tab.
The website's not great.
It's OK.
It doesn't need to be great.
It's a bit messy, but yeah, you just start going.
If you go to shop all and then go on and go to the outdoors tab on the left.
Yeah, outdoors and and you could do.
Yeah, so just like different stuff for couches and shit.
Cool. Yeah.
Very creative find.
Mm hmm.
So some of them are these are like, yeah, that I mean, see, that one,
I don't really know what this with that very deep texture.
Yeah.
I'm not really sure the problem with these fabrics is
you got to order the sample because none of them have like most of them anyway.
Don't show it on a furniture or something to give you any kind of sense of scale.
Right. Like that one on the bottom right there.
I looked at that one.
I have no idea how wide those stripes are.
Yes, that's a very, very good point.
Yeah.
You know, or like these, whatever diamonds are those two inches long or a full foot.
Like it could be huge.
Yeah. Cool. Anyway, it's going to be it's going to be very, very fun.
I have I have an email
from Queershifting Gears, nice, who wanted to follow up on the using dude magnet
cars fishing with cars, dudes, right.
And whether or not that is a good strategy.
Long story short, no, it is not.
It's not a good strategy.
Dot, dot, dot, unless you plan on chasing straight men, you.
That's not a thing that happens.
I guess people are scared that that's a thing that happens.
It's like not.
OK, but here's a but some observations.
OK, some observations made up of knowing many young queer millennials buying
their first new ish car after the hand me down dies or queer car enthusiasts.
Not the absolute truth of empirical data, but some amusing trends.
Trans women, Miata or Mini Cooper, trans men, zero personal data.
In addition, Mazda three and CX5s across the entire community.
Common in every category, every queer household with two cars that I know.
One of those is a Mazda three or CX five.
There we go.
It seems I can't believe I'm saying this, but it seems Mazda is always the answer.
Wow. So there you go.
Thank you very much for that insight.
Patron shifting gears.
Yeah. So unless you want to pick up straight dudes, which is or chase them.
As he said, having driven all those cars, believe me, that is boring.
Good to know. Yeah. Get yourself a Mercedes SL.
That's where you really want to be.
Someone else sent me an email that you might find interesting.
This is a map they made of all accidents on Angelus Crest.
Holy shit.
So that's just a map of Angelus Crest.
Well, it's just the map of the entire road.
They went they went year by year.
Wow. To show trends.
And then there's also you can do a guide between like type of.
Kind of accidents.
Oh, wow. Head on.
This is.
I mean, this looks super thorough for people listening.
There are so many categories I can turn on and off.
Like passenger wet, like jeep, motorcycles,
sport utility vehicle.
I mean, you can select the type of car and then the type of accident.
Hit an object, flipped over.
There isn't a tab for like guy was being a complete shitbag.
You know what I mean?
Like there's I wish there was a total dickbag tab.
This needs a two door coupe tag.
Well, isn't there sports?
Yeah, right?
That's what it needs. Yeah.
We yeah, we need we need more passenger car.
This is amazing, but we need we need to be able to further determine what level
of shitbaggery was in was happening.
Right. So this is passenger cars now.
And this is exactly the same.
Yeah. Wow.
And so wait, what's the but it doesn't show.
The colors on the map aren't like hot spots.
It's just those different types of incidents, right?
This is each individual incident.
So I mean, it's kind of happening where it looks like the densest part.
I mean, it's really the lower part here.
Lower, lower highway to yeah, yeah, yeah, because I would say this is where,
you know, tourists go like to go hiking.
It's also commuters use this.
Also, yeah, people driving fast use this like lower section the most.
Yeah. And then what is this here?
This is what Angeles Forest.
So that's yeah, that's the intersection of Big
Tahunga and Angeles Forest.
Yeah.
Angeles Forest is honestly,
Angeles Forest Highway is where I personally see by far the most reckless
driving from commuters.
Yeah.
Like I could I could probably tell you by location on this map,
whether it's fuckery or commuters.
Angeles Forest in that dense spot right there.
That is a shady ass place to be during commuting time.
People make the sketchiest fucking double yellow passes there.
They do things that like put the videos and I'm not trying to say like my fucking
enthusiast driving is better than can like no, you shouldn't do that anyway.
But like in terms of you and I have seen things out there during commuting traffic
that are box trucks or people with in a old Corolla passing someone in an old
Camry double yellow like into apex.
It's really people are really almost understeered into by a Tacoma.
I fucking a guy rolled his Jeep like two seconds before we got there once.
I almost got head on by a suburban and had to hit the shoulder in the 9-Eleven
ST like just fucking nuts stuff I've seen up there.
Yeah.
And this is one of those things where someone did the math of like if I go five
miles per hour faster, you know, on my way to work for this commute, how much
quicker will I actually get there?
Probably three minutes.
Can I just point out that my favorite road in the
Angeles Forest is also the safest?
Well, it's probably the least driven.
You're right.
But it's it's not as tight nine miles.
My favorite road of the Angeles Forest is also there's fewer blind spots.
It's not as tight.
It's just not as trafficked.
So what was interesting is I'm going to deselect all years.
If you go here by whoever made this fucking you guys, you guys are you got a lot
of time on your hands, but I really like this.
So like, OK, so I wanted to look at before covid and after because good
good vibes began in covid time, right?
Sure. Yeah. OK.
So 2016 all I have is passenger cars selected of all all kinds of accidents.
And it shows on the incidents, total incidents on screen 103, right?
Is that what it says 103?
111. Oh, yeah.
Oh, that's weird. Yeah.
103. Searching.
But here's 111.
So let's we'll go with total incidents on screen.
So 103 on screen because you have to zoom if you zoom out, there's probably more.
So 111 is actually the answer.
All right. So we'll go with 111 in 2016.
Yeah. 157 in 2017.
104 in 2018.
So it's kind of oscillating 112 in 2019, 20, 20, 142.
OK. So that's like good vibes starts and I'm not trying to blame.
It just got more popular to go up there.
20, 21, 147, 20, 22, 130, 104.
So it actually doesn't really affect it.
139. I mean, actually,
this is all within range.
It is because 2025, 147.
That's a lot. That's high.
That's the highest because when this was sent to me,
I believe the comment was like, I think good vibes influence this.
But I looked at the averages and it actually oscillates in this range.
It seems to I don't know what is the determining factor really,
but it just goes between like 100 and 100 and something.
Yeah. I mean, it's like if you want to look at it,
you could compare it to some if you wanted to go well in 2025 and compare it
to one of the low years, you could go, well, compared to 2017.
It's up 50 percent, 50 percent.
Or you could go, well, compared to 2018.
You know, the other year, it's only up like 11 percent.
You know what I mean?
Like you could make up a statistic to suit your preexisting argument.
Yeah, I mean, yeah, that's the hard thing with statistics.
It's like 147 and 2025.
I also think that and I've talked about this on this show and other things.
Like I think social media is having more of an influence on driving accidents
in the canyons than good vibes is.
Sure. But do you also think that it's possible that more people have to live
out in like Palmdale and commute to LA for, you know, whatever reason,
cost reasons they moved out for COVID.
And it's like that's what I'm like.
Is it is it that
enthusiasts are fucking up more or is it that just more people are commuting on
that road either because the traffic has gotten worse on the highway and they're
trying to avoid it or because more people are moving out there.
And that's how you get to LA.
And so, yeah, OK, the traffic, the crashes are up by a little bit.
But what I would like to see, I think, and probably is like,
what is the traffic flow on that road up by the proportional same amount?
So is the driving getting worse or there's more people and therefore more crashes?
I think we'd have to look at the area only above.
Right. Exactly.
You know, zoom in to where nobody's commuting.
I agree. Right. Yeah, it's above Mount Wilson.
We could do I wonder if we can do that.
We probably can.
We got that incidence on screen.
That's right. Let's see if.
OK, so enthusiast section.
Can you zoom in further?
Yeah. OK.
Yeah, yeah, drag the map down a little bit down.
OK, you know, down other way down.
Sorry. Yeah. Yeah, there we go.
OK, that's about that's roughly where we need to be.
Can you zoom out a little bit, but keep that intersection at the bottom?
Oh, that's hard to.
Sorry. No, no, it's that's a I can't zoom in and out less than that.
I see. OK, so just drag it left.
Yeah, more, more, more.
So that intersection is all the way to the left.
Keep going, keep going, keep going, going there.
All right. Oh, that doesn't actually get you.
It doesn't give us. OK, you're right. Sorry.
OK.
But let's see what was going on in like 2019.
There were three. Three.
So three incidents was this northeast of Upper Big.
Mm hmm. And then 2020, there were 11. Mm hmm.
Twenty twenty one, there were 13. Mm hmm.
And then 16 and then five.
So twenty twenty three.
It dropped safety by seventy.
Oh, wait, was that section of road closed?
Oh, maybe there might have been a section of road that was closed.
Could you get up there for I don't know.
No, I think you always got section.
I think you always could.
OK, continue. Twenty twenty four to ten.
So it kind of went down.
So it actually in twenty twenty five was 15.
So I mean, it honestly oscillates quite a bit.
And it's gone. It's gone up.
But like by like single digits, not by like alarming amounts.
Well, actually, if we go back to 2017, there were 11.
I think that's like the second most out of all of these years.
Yeah. But it's within a range.
Yeah. So how interesting to be able to look at that.
I mean, this is such a cool tool.
And I thought it was really fascinating.
And then when you start looking at it, I gotta say, there's not out of all those
crashes, the section.
Where the you just looked at that you zoomed in on that.
That section is like relatively safe.
I think the crashes that do happen up there get a lot of coverage.
They get posted on social media and they're often a sports car,
possibly a sports car and possibly more severe.
Yeah. I mean, but it's actually considering the other sections of the road.
In terms of just data, it's a relatively safe section to be driving.
Well, it's kind of when people and as electric cars got faster and faster
and you can buy a thousand horsepower at a dealership and we go,
oh, is this going to cause more and more accidents?
And you go, well, if you looked at the data of average horsepower per accident,
it's going to be slower cars or less powerful cars just because there's more of them.
Yeah. You know, and so there's just fewer people up here.
That's really, really interesting, though.
Yeah. I'd love to see the next level of in depth research would be shit baggery.
You need that category.
Yeah, I think two or coops would be a good marker.
Sure. If that was it.
But I think it depends on if the police have a box for that when they do an accident report.
Like was the car modded?
Just a check box for mods.
Yeah, that'd be pretty funny.
Oh, man, that's fucking cool, though.
Yeah, we'll put this map in the description and shout out to my
favorite road also being the safest by far by like a lot.
That's fucking what's up because I'm on it, motherfucker.
All right, should we go to the people? Sure.
Oh, before we do, if you are in the North Carolina area in April,
Zach and I will be doing a live podcast at the Heritage Invitational at the 1010s
Motor Club, which is the private club next to Charlotte Motor Speedway.
But this event will be open.
You can get a ticket for the whole day's event and that ticket will be
also a ticket to the podcast.
So you don't you buy a ticket and it's for the whole day.
There's going to be all kinds of cool car shit going on and our podcast.
So be very fun.
Yeah, get it where you get.
I guess we'll figure out.
I don't know if the tickets are on sale yet, actually, but let's put it on your
calendar, April, I want to say 9th, 10th, 11th is what it is.
I think it's I think it's April 9th, 10th, 11th.
OK, let's go to those fun ass folks over at patreon.com slash the Smoking Tire
podcast. We appreciate all of you keeping the boat floating down the ocean here.
And if you join us over at Patreon, you get to ask questions for the show,
watch the live stream, get the show the day it's recorded rather than waiting.
Get the show without ads and get extra show and other good fun stuff.
Plus, you get to support your favorite car.
People who yapp about their opinions like they're more valuable than anybody else's
opinions. Am I right?
Zach was looking at something else.
I was looking at something else.
He zones out when I say that because why does he need to be here?
He knows what all the things you get are over at Patreon.
But sometimes you drop in a little something at the end.
He wasn't looking.
Christian says, will your next daily be an expensive, depreciated car or go back
to leasing? I mean, we just talked about it's going to be something that can tow.
Yeah, that's going to be it.
So I don't know, I'm it could be it could honestly be either of those things.
I mean, there's an argument to get a brand new thing and lease it and talk about it.
I mean, if you from a content creation perspective, if I lease something,
it has to be new like a new product that just came out that people want to know
about that worked really well for Maki or we go the other way.
Right. Yeah.
Yeah.
We find like a fucking 2012 G-Wag.
They're towing with that four miles per gallon.
Well, and I would like X5 diesel.
That would be more.
I'd be more into that.
That would be that would actually be OK.
But I but all those are like old.
They are there. I don't 15 years old.
Yeah, like I don't I don't want anything that old.
Like it's got to it's got to have like car play and shit like that.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Post car play pre-8S is where we really need to be.
Right.
That's like what's the best air to live in?
It might be.
What is the toe rating on a cayenne hybrid, like a V6 cayenne hybrid?
That that could be the real fucking move, actually.
Because you're talking about a plug-in hybrid.
I could drive it on electricity most of the time.
It probably meets the gross vehicle weight tax deduction.
Holy shit.
That's a hundred thousand dollar fucking car.
Seventy seven sixteen pounds.
Wow.
Habibi.
I can't afford a twenty six.
We might we were going to be looking at used.
But but now cayenne hybrid, that could be.
Maybe I can make my dad an offer he can't refuse.
Well, is that oh, it is not a turbo, right?
No, it is a fucking V6 hybrid.
Turbo has a lower toe rating, apparently.
Yeah, it's got it because it's got to be suspension probably and where wheels or
you know, some other shit.
Now, if you want to go depreciated, you could go two door Tahoe, go old school.
I don't I don't want no classic towing.
And you don't really want like a.
Yeah, you know, it's like that.
God, those are fucking cool, but no.
Yeah, that would be like, well, let's put it all fucking T4 in it.
I'm coming in.
Yeah, I know.
But that's see, that's this might be the actual hack plug-in hybrid cayenne.
We'll have to do a lot of math.
Yeah, yeah, but like it doesn't need to be to the dollar.
But like I I love that car.
That's a great fucking car.
And oh, by the way, it can tow a trailer.
What a delight.
That's good to know.
Get some cool wheels, some fucking something on it that makes it look.
Yeah, some freeze.
And then you get some freeze on the trailer, dude.
You got to go matchy, matchy wheels.
I don't know how small those wheels are.
They think they're probably small.
HRE doesn't make anything smaller than like 17.
I would be I would honestly be nervous
about parking a trailer like overnight somewhere like a hotel with special wheels.
Only because every six months, you know,
my Instagram, someone in the car community, their trailer gets stolen,
which sucks and the community tries to rally to help them find it.
But it's just too attractive.
That's a good point.
Yeah, that's a good point.
That sucks when that happens.
Yeah.
Is there a good way to like that?
Because all trailers are just secured with like a padlock, essentially.
Yeah, I think you do that.
But man, if you follow McNally official on YouTube, you can pick any lock.
Oh, yeah.
Well, you don't even need to pick.
You can fucking cut with a cutter or whatever.
You could now with lithium ion technology.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
I think you just stuff air tags like in places they can't get them out.
Like that's welded in somewhere.
Truly, you know, they're going to have to cut it open
if they want to stop you from tracking it.
Yeah, God, that's fucking shitty.
But that's a good point.
You don't want to you don't want to make your trailer to flash.
Yeah.
Uh, let's go.
Someone asked if we had seen this.
Front wheel drive NSX.
Have you seen the Capricorn Zagato fuckers a stunner?
You're not wrong.
I did see this and actually when I first saw it, I went, oh, you've you've
Zagatoed a second gen 4 GT.
Wow, they have, haven't they?
Right.
This intake isn't that is very 4G.
But I thought this was like and the windshield also, to me,
makes it look like they used a 4 GT tub for this, maybe.
But and if they use this big engine, supposedly the 5.2 V8 supercharged.
Wow.
Right.
I mean, but but also I I'm just saying it looks like they've done that.
They probably didn't.
They probably would have a five speed manual.
That's an interesting choice.
That is an interesting choice.
You think that's a.
That's got to be an error.
Well, who the fuck would build a five speed manual?
I mean, you could get them for cheap because no one wants them anymore.
But that would be weird.
So there's an argument.
Here's an argument for this for a five speed manual
is with a car like that, which is probably very light and made of carbon fiber.
Eight hundred and eighty seven horsepower with a manual is so much.
OK.
And apparently they say this engine revs to nine thousand.
That's a dog like five speed.
OK, so basically they're going for a throwback vibe.
And they're saying that with this much power and that many revs,
you actually don't need so many gears.
That's true, which is an interesting argument to make.
That interior looks great.
Yeah.
So I guess this is not based in a Ford based on a 4 GT tub.
It looks fucking cool, though.
But doesn't you could see how I sort of came up with that guess.
Yeah.
But I guess not.
It looks really cool.
I mean, the car driver agrees with you like it has a slight hint of twenty seventeen
four GT, it's a little more slight, but OK.
Yeah, not bad.
I mean, look, the most important 19 of them for three and a half million dollars.
It's incredibly important that all, you know,
fifteen hundred billionaire car collectors are appeased.
It's extremely important.
Yes.
It's extremely important that these talents are not being used to build cars
that like even mildly rich people can afford.
If you get a new thing and never use it, like if you have a huge car collection
and you buy the thing and you park it, you're excited because you got it.
And then that wears away just like, you know, if we bought, I don't know,
a new T-shirt and then threw it in a closet.
I did that scale.
You know, I did that math once.
The math of Ralph Lauren giving my dad the vanquish of his net worth versus the car.
I did that math when I was whatever year that was.
2005, I guess.
And it was the equivalent of me giving my friend a T-shirt.
Fucking it was wild.
Scale without and the scale is like
even I think at the time, Ralph might have been worth five billion dollars.
I mean, imagine what the scale is now between some of these fucking people.
Yeah.
Mustang Geek says,
I've never encountered a car owner or car
enthusiast who prefers touch screens to physical buttons.
Am I not talking to the right people or are manufacturers listening to the wrong people?
Where do manufacturers get the idea that drivers want touch screens?
Tesla, that's where.
Tesla, Tesla, Tesla.
The success of Tesla and the fact that Tesla didn't cheap.
Tesla interior doesn't cost a fucking thing to make.
That's that's why they do that.
And everyone else was like, wait, we don't have to spend money on this.
Yeah, plus people liked it.
And I think at the time everyone we were using phones, we're using iPads.
People liked it a lot.
And Tesla did a really good job with their integration and their UI design.
And so, of course, the market's going to follow them.
And Tesla was selling so many cars and the market went, OK, well,
let's take that same thing.
But now the pendulum went too far.
Yeah.
I mean, but also.
If you think about all the things that you can do just just like to I don't want
to like I like buttons for for primary functions no matter what.
But like think about how many more things you can do in your car now because there's
a screen like just all kinds of settings and all kinds of stuff you can do to make
your car a little better for you because that screen is there.
And like think about the the the gap, the the the closing gap in luxury from a
fucking Kia to a Mercedes now because of what you can do with it with a touch
screen and features and stuff like that.
And imagine if you took if you took a launcher end right now and you turned
all of the end function adjustments or like an ionic five end, which is weird
because electric billy if you took all those those adjustments that are in the
screen and made a button for them, it would be three pianos.
You know, you'd be that guy at a concert who's just like playing two different
things, it would be two now would be overwhelming.
So like it's
but no, I think I think
one car development cycles are a long time.
So it took a few years for all the automakers to pivot to chase Tesla to screens.
And now it's taken a few years for them to process
people's frustration with screens and to and to pivot their product lines back to
buttons.
So but where did they get that idea?
I think we all know.
Check engine light bulb remover club.
That would be a good t-shirt, actually.
That's not a bad t-shirt.
You know, I'm so over the anti blank blank clubs.
Right. The anti social club.
But that's been taken.
It's now it's like I go to a fucking Italian restaurant and it's like the
anti pasta pasta club.
Let's get the fuck out of here.
Lame.
Much of the recent crazy public auction auction prices, do you think are
something nefarious, i.e. money laundering, market cornering, price anchoring
versus the product of growing income and quality, especially of the have lots.
I think it's that.
I think that for again, those 1500 people.
Look, I thought most of those like.
I thought that all those yellow cars, I thought most of them were pretty ugly,
but they were certainly unique and they had like delivery miles.
The meekum ones.
OK.
And so you had a few people who found who have all the money for whom there is no
difference between five and eleven million dollars, crazy as it is to say,
who said, you know, I want that one.
I'm never going to find a yellow delivery mile Enzo ever again, probably.
So whether it whatever it costs, let's fucking go.
And then what happens after that is ever a bunch of other people that were
thinking about selling or like, oh, shit, and people are still hot because that's
the new price and sure.
And so.
But I think there also there is probably some market pumping happening.
We've talked about this with what Dino's and Skyline's Koska's Koska's.
And there was a car that went up yesterday, the day before.
And the first the initial bid was like five hundred thousand dollars.
I wish I could find the listing.
And everyone went, this is almost a suspicious leap.
Like this person was trying to set the reserve even though without setting the
reserve and there's stuff like that where, you know, a dealership that deals in
like vintage exotics could just bid themselves back and forth and pump their own book.
Well, and also something nefarious in terms of this question is a pretty wide
as a pretty widespread of things here.
Like like market cornering is one thing, but like money laundering is actually kind
of a different thing.
You know, Fort nine, you watch that channel.
I know what it is motorcycle story recently about a ring of people that were
laundering money by selling motorcycles and they were and they were trading like
two year old MotoGP bikes from Ducati and some special stuff.
But the thing that kind of red flagged everyone is there was like a custom
bike shop that was taking huge deposits and huge amounts of money for like
like three times what the bike should be worth.
And it kind of got everybody's attention.
And it turns out that that's probably what was going on.
And one of the people involved was that Canadian snowboarder who just turned
himself in, yeah, I was about to say he had a warehouse full of race bikes.
It was that guy.
So that's part of how they figured out how he was moving around.
I have, I mean, not just as a fucking lefty, but I really I do think that these
big auction prices for the most part are the result of the have lots having lots.
Because look, I've done crimes before like if you're doing crimes,
trying to hide those crimes by buying shit publicly at auction isn't the best idea.
Even if you're trying to hide it by buying cars,
there's there's lots of places to buy cars fucking quietly.
You don't need to set a record at a public auction if what your goal is,
is to launder money.
Yeah. If you're laundering money, you do it.
You should do it quietly.
Quietly. You don't fucking go to me, come and put on a cowboy hat and fucking,
you know, send it. You keep that shit on the sly.
I just think that there's these small number of people for whom
there just isn't a difference.
But if you want to, you know, let's say you sell the drugs and, you know,
I buy the car from you to pay you for the drugs that I have purchased from you,
whatever. But now I want to exit like I can sell the car at Meekum.
Sure. So that I can get my exit money.
You have a couple of people like that.
Yeah, you do. You need you need a fence.
Yeah. Yeah. You need a fence on the other side.
Now, this in this particular case, the guy selling the cars had bought them new.
So it wasn't that. Right. It was a.
But also, like I do have to say
the yellow cars in particular, there is a precedent
that buying unique specification high end
Ferraris is actually a very good investment.
You know, like even if you spend a lot today,
you hold it for a while, like you'll get your money back.
Yeah. For sure.
I don't think people lose a lot of money on unique
specification Ferraris, you know, I mean, like factory, you know,
factory ordered stuff. Yeah. Of course.
There's obviously some examples where the car is like super, super ugly,
but just a yellow Enzo like they didn't make a lot of them.
And you'll that's probably a good investment.
Nostradamus.
It's pretty good.
So good.
I'm thinking of a bit of you
or me dressed up as a Nostradamus,
fucking hoffing a tank and taking questions.
That's why I thought you were going to go with like the fast and furious selling
car parts type of Nostradamus, like what turbo should I put on this thing?
Like you want a 72 millimeter, not a 76.
See, that's funny, too.
Can I do that while ripping a fucking drink?
Cool. All right.
Other than the obvious German sports,
other than the obvious German options,
what are some high performance sports cars that comfortably seat tall drivers?
I'm six, seven and an in shape 250.
I've always wanted something more exotic, but struggle to fit.
If I do, the sight lines tend to be a challenge.
Yeah, that's tough.
LeBron, he's always writing in fucking.
He's always writing in this guy.
Options for tall drivers.
I mean,
nine, elevens other than the obvious.
So that's the problem is other than the obvious bits.
I assume you're in America because you're using freedom units.
So the Alpine A 110 will not do it.
Six, seven, like what is six, seven?
Like front engine Corvette's
not, you know, not the not the the C eights, but like C sevens.
That may not excite you so much, but it works.
You probably it's probably safer to always go with a two plus two, right?
Because then you can lean the seat back into that back seat.
Like, yeah, Bentley GT.
Sure. Bentley.
Get yourself a depreciated Bentley GT.
But like the obvious is obvious for a reason, I hate to say, like what?
Like Lexus LC,
a Lexus, that's comfortable for a tall driver.
I think so.
Yeah, they have lots of leg room.
The Mercedes S 63 Cabriolet.
The thing is the average height in Germany is among the tallest in the world.
Average height of a man is five eleven.
I think here it's five nine.
So they're just Zeejer already designing the car for tall people.
They are.
And if Denmark makes a car, that'll be for you.
I think that's the average tallest.
But I don't know, Mustang.
I don't know.
I don't know how tall you can be to fit in the Mustang GT.
Pretty, pretty tall.
And you can you can lean the seat back, but eventually like you're too far away
from the wheel. How long did this guy's arm?
You may run into issues.
Use of economic challenges, for sure.
Look up what basketball players drive.
Honestly, you are that height.
Hellcats, yeah, like all the hellcats.
That's what really tall people drive.
Yeah, seriously.
Like there's a lot of like NBA players
that I said that because we're across the street from the Clippers practice.
And also Killer Mike is a big dude.
He drives a hellcat.
He says he told me the other day.
He'll never give up his hellcat.
Yeah, they're fun.
And like I hate to say it, but like, you know, fast crossovers too.
Tall drivers drive like cayenne turbos and shit, you know, sometimes.
But but like eliminating the obvious is eliminates a lot of the good ones.
Like let's put the obvious back in for a minute.
Nine elevens are great for tall drivers.
Audi R eights for mid-engine cars are good for tall drivers, not spiders,
but our eight coupes are good.
Bentley GTs are good.
Like, oh, the Mercedes Mercedes C 63 coupes, the two plus two.
Oh, yeah. Yeah, that's a nice.
Those are those are good.
And all those Mercedes AMG coupes, those are really good for tall drivers.
Like they had like the E 63 coupe thing for a while.
Like those are great.
Yeah, I think you have to go with the obvious two plus twos.
Yeah, and two maybe.
I don't know. It's two plus two.
I just don't know. I mean, certainly an M four.
Yeah, an M four.
The seat does a huge car and the seat goes way far back.
Yeah, yeah.
The toking tire that I like very, very nice is the premium for a nine nine seven
Carrera S over a nine eight seven KMO Cayman S worth the 20 to 30 K Delta
and price difference for comparable examples.
I've been lucky enough to drive many nine
elevens, but this would be my first Cayman ownership experience.
Is the nine eleven Carrera S experience versus a Cayman S experience?
I mean,
20, 30 K, so you're talking about a $60,000 car versus a $40,000 car, really.
So the thing is, both of those cars, if you keep them nice or flat money,
right, pretty much or like very, very slow depreciation, if you keep them nice
and service them, right, they cost roughly the same to service and maintain.
The Carrera is going to be faster.
And because it's a small car, a nine nine seven is a pretty small car,
the Delta in size between a nine eleven and a Cayman is actually less than in the
modern era, you know, like they are actually closer in size then than they are now.
So it really depends on how much money you have.
Like if you can afford to park the extra money into the nine eleven,
I'd say probably yes, worth it.
If you like if that if that amount of money doesn't really mean something to you
to hold on to and use for your life, like and I'm not your accountant, like.
Do you think it matters what experience they want from the car?
I mean, there's a there's a lot of overlap between these two vehicles.
Like they're comfortable for long distance.
They're very sporty.
You could drive them on the track.
But one is rear engine, one's mid engine.
I think they have distinct feels in that regard.
Yeah. And so I think that's what I would focus on as well.
Like if the money doesn't matter, you go, OK, well, are you trying to have a nine
eleven experience and get into that game?
Or do you want to have the mid engine thing, which is a pretty rare thing to have,
especially at this price point?
I mean, the good thing about this type of car is if you drive it for a year,
you maintain it, whatever, like other than the taxes and the insurance and whatever,
your total cost of ownership is probably not that much.
So if you think you might like to try a Cayman, try one.
Drive it for a year. Maybe you love it.
Maybe you do. You know what?
I think maybe actually that extra 20 K to get me into that nine eleven is worth it.
And now you've learned something.
And maybe it costs you a little bit of money to learn that lesson.
But in the meantime, like you've had some fun.
Um, so like if, yeah.
But I think both of those cars, just in like financially,
would be similar costs to own over a period of time
and have similarly slow depreciation curves if you drove them the same and maintain them, you know?
Are there more? Oh, many more.
Adville and vodka.
Did you ever steal a parents or friends, parents cars for a joy ride?
Anytime you borrowed a car, you definitely shouldn't have 100 percent.
Really? 100 percent.
My parents cars, when they were out of town,
I drove my dad's car to school instead of my car and I immediately was
knocked out by a teacher to my parents.
Yeah, fully knocked out.
I got a phone call as soon as I got home from school.
Wow. Oh, yeah.
I my fucking my school was a goddamn surveillance state before that.
It was educating you for now.
11 they were there when they fucking were like, you know, Dick Cheney was like,
you know, we need to get a fire out of control.
These fucking people, you know, who's doing it right?
Rye country day school in Rye, New York, basically the basis for the Patriot Act.
It really prepared you from the modern age.
It did. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
But other I mean, never it was like stolen and like fucking ripped it.
It did something like super, super crazy.
But like I definitely would roll my dad's car sans permission when my parents
would go out of town sometimes like I don't even know why just because it was
there, you know, because why wouldn't you?
I was allowed to drive him, but I would do unauthorized off-roading.
Oh, well, that's a different story.
I mean, we used to have we had a 96 grand Cherokee, I think.
And I went off-roading and it came back and I washed the car and to hide the evidence.
And I think I was 16 and my dad goes, did you go off-roading in the Jeep?
And I go, no, he goes, interesting.
Yeah, come here.
Not good. So we walk outside and he opens the hood and I forgot to wash the engine.
Mud.
The entire engine bay is brown.
Because I was splashing spotless.
Yes, because I was splashing deep puddles.
And then I didn't notice he brought me around the back.
That's like a movie scene.
That's like, we can clean it up, bro.
They'll never go.
My dad's got this right.
Just set up tools.
And in the back, I had cracked the plastic bumper cover and it was hanging like eight
inches off and he's like, because from, you know, doing what is it, a departure angle.
And he J.B. Weld it on and held for the life of the car.
But I was caught so quickly.
That's hilarious.
Travis, Travis Pastrana's primary care provider, hypothetical.
You're going back to 1902 in the United States.
You're allowed to bring whatever vehicle you want with you.
What are you bringing?
I mean, the question is, can I get
exactly can you get fuel and is it going to be good enough?
Yeah, is there going to be unleaded fuel?
So I was going to go with something electric.
Wow. Like I'd go like Rivian or it would
take like seven days to charge a river.
It would, but otherwise I got to find a chemist and say, can you take the lead out
of this gasoline or you get something from like the fifties?
But well, I mean, can let's let's assume we could we're going to have to debate
what fuel is available in 19.
Not even debate.
I got to bring something that has a flex fuel system.
Right. GTR with the tune.
Yeah, Koenigsegg, something that runs on.
I mean, like my perfect 1902 vehicle would be a Sherp.
A Sherp.
A Sherp is there is no better vehicle for a world essentially without roads,
without laws, no vehicle registration.
You have a tiny little diesel engine.
Assuming you could get diesel, I think you could get diesel.
Could you get diesel in 1902?
If you could get diesel, this thing can go 2000 miles on a tank of diesel.
Diesel, the first diesel engine was
patented in 1892, first working prototype in 1897.
We're getting close, buddy.
So there's one guy in America who makes diesel.
You just have to go back to this one.
The fuel itself was it was called distillate, and that was first used in commercial engines
in 1898. So you could find it.
OK, so you get diesel.
That's a good solution.
Dude, that's that's going to be it's got a tractor motor.
Well, and because roads are probably not that well mapped.
So if you encounter a lake, you can keep going.
No problem. I have to go around.
Yeah, yeah.
As I don't know about since, but as of the time
that I drove the Sherp and they'd been making them for like three years,
they said that none had ever gotten a flat tire and only one had ever broken its drive chain.
So like.
I feel like I could fucking make it a couple of years.
That's a really good choice.
There were the Sherp, right?
Yeah.
Granny shifting, not double clutching like you should.
Has there ever been a time in your life where you wish you had a mulligan?
Oh, yeah. Yeah. Oh, God, yeah.
Way too embarrassed to talk about them here.
Do you try to think about it?
I mean, yeah, no, dude, I mean.
I haven't had any like huge ones.
But like certainly a lot of small ones where I wish I had acted differently.
Sure. Yeah.
And I think I used to feel really bad.
I mean, I still do sometimes like ruminate on that stuff.
But what I think I read, you know, the things you have done have led to who you are today.
So if you like went back and changed those things, you have that butterfly effect.
You know, would you the lessons you learn from doing those things quote wrong,
maybe that informs you going forward and you are the good, you know, the good,
better person you are today because of that stuff.
Yeah, it it takes like a lot of therapy
to to stop beating yourself up for those things and to like and to forgive yourself.
And also like I just I, you know, people come up to me all the time
and remember me from somewhere, say, I met you here.
And sometimes they'll be like, I said this really like dumb thing in front of you.
And I do not remember.
And but that shit will for some reason have haunted them until they and they took
them and and, you know, to the point where they feel they need to bring it up.
And it just reminds me constantly of the things that I did that I found to be
like so embarrassing or shameful or social faux pas.
I said this dumb thing and this girl looked at me weird and like fucking nobody
at the other half of that remembers any of that shit.
Right. You know.
So, yeah.
Even Flowmaster should license plate covers be illegal across the country.
Yeah, probably.
I think they are illegal in most states.
Yeah, well, rock and roll, but let the police figure that out.
That paradigm titties.
You and three other drivers get to do Nürburgring 24.
Who's on your team and what are you driving?
Wow.
She's Chris Harris.
Sure. And then I need two professionals.
You want Rob Holland.
Oh, yeah, Rob is great.
You want Rob Holland.
You want Chris Harris.
Yeah.
And then you want someone that's even faster than Rob Holland.
Like Ollie Beerman or something.
Someone you go Max Verstappen.
Well, you want to just York Bergmeister or York on the Nürburgring.
I think I might put your New York Bergmeister above Max Verstappen.
Same car. I think I think I think York could take Max on the Nürburgring.
I might choose Lee Keen, which he hasn't raced in a while, but I like him.
I know, you know, he's good.
And what are we driving?
I mean, we're driving a cop car.
It has to be a 9-11 cop.
It's a good time.
Nineties Dance Organ says, can you scroll down a little bit?
I like to put my spin on on.
Well, why haven't you put wheels and exhaust on your Countach?
My friend, my friend, there are things you don't know.
First off,
imagine, just imagine
rims on a Countach.
Yeah. I mean, can you imagine
any other wheel in the fucking history of aftermarket wheels that would make a
Countach look better than gold goddamn phone dials?
Yeah. Are you fucking kidding me?
Improve on that?
Habibi, you do not you do not improve on Gandini.
That's that's absurd.
It's a pretty stunning wheel.
That's absurd.
Yeah. That's fuck.
And that's it, by the way, made by OZ.
So they come on rims, my friend.
And oh, by the way, my car has a fucking exhaust on it.
My car, I purchased it with an Albertoni V12 engineering
cat-back exhaust on it.
So it's already got that.
But yeah, you know, fucking fucking fucking with a Countach
with rims.
What about like like Alpina's, you know, some big 21 spokes?
No, it's something very edgy to match the edges of the Countach.
Oh, my God.
I think I'm getting sweats.
You can you imagine, dude, how easily you could fuck that car out of a yard.
Oh, rims.
You know, the straight lines.
Put those on there.
It's in the family.
Yamaha Beebe says, what cars would you like to own in the next 10 or so years?
It's so funny.
There's nothing that's like on the list that's reasonable.
Everything that I would like is so fucking expensive that I can't afford it.
And that's a shame.
I would say I'd like to
eventually have another air cool 9-11.
I really enjoyed it.
I'd pretty much leave it alone like I'd want a street car.
I could drive a lot.
Yeah, I wouldn't.
Oh, my God, that is terrible.
Yeah, here's a Countach anniversary on rims.
And they look like fairly high quality rims, but they that sucks.
That looks awful.
That's fucking brutally bad.
I found like one example.
Yeah, that's bad.
Yeah, a nice air cool thing will be cool.
I was I was lightly shopping for Terminator Cobra's.
They've gone up in price.
No way.
Quite a bit.
Really?
I mean, I think I needed to search for ones with higher mileage.
That fat ace was helping me.
I pivoted his brain from old Mustang to newer Mustang.
And the cars are like 40 grand, which is not crazy, but it's more than I was expecting.
But there is another Mustang.
I have my eye on, but they really don't exist.
And so, but I mean, I'm very excited about the Mercedes.
I'm excited about having a custom cruiser, which I think will be.
Because now it's like now I'm 44.
Now I want like I want cars that are cool, but for like doing the things that I do.
And so like, you know, I spend a lot of time in traffic, like fucking on nice days.
Right.
Have something that you're excited to sit in traffic.
Yeah, that makes sense.
Fine.
Bright, ling long baloney skins.
Thoughts on Volvo S 60 and V 60 recharge plug-in hybrids.
We drove that.
We've driven those before.
I did.
I thought they were I thought it was nice.
I can't remember.
My sister-in-law has an S 60 recharge and very much likes it.
Super.
Some of the best seats available today.
Yeah, you know what?
They're they're they're not like exciting dynamically.
They they the steering isn't great.
But they're beautifully designed, spacious.
The seats are fabulous.
The ride is good.
They're really, really comfortable.
Nice to look at a lot of highway miles, commuting or whatever.
Sweet.
Yeah, they're not exciting dynamically, but they are very nice.
Did you highlight this one for a minute?
OK.
And then and then she said, wait, and then she said, now in my back.
Oh, now in my back.
That's pretty funny.
I'm a huge pre-Reno NISO fan, pre-Reno Nissan fan.
How in the world is Nissan pulling off a manual Z,
the new Godzilla, a Nismo Armada and an
Infinity Sports sedan in the next two to three years when they were a year away
from bankruptcy, do you feel there's any hope or is this last hurrah?
It's so fucking interesting.
I don't I pay so little attention to Nissan's finances.
I don't know.
Is that I mean,
the manual Z didn't seem hard that seemed like they just took the two things
they already already had and should put them together.
I realized that it does cost some money to do that, but that doesn't seem that hard.
The return of Godzilla.
Is that an electric car?
Isn't that supposed to be an electric car?
Nismo Armada seems pretty straight forward hybrid.
Three to five years.
Yeah, I mean, look, I think the thing is companies always have to say what they're
going to do next. Sure.
And if they hit a snag that's large enough called bankruptcy, like these projects
will go away and they might have to give up.
I mean, what you just listed are like four exciting things.
They might give up, you know, the middle thing.
Like they might need a flagship car, like a new GTR to remind people that they're
cool and keep selling, you know, crossovers to people in 20 years or 10 years.
And then maybe they need the Armada to actually sell to people.
But if things go belly up, like these projects will just get abandoned.
And they'll be prototyped somewhere for sale.
Yeah, that's what will happen.
Yeah, you'll be able to get the one, you know, manual fucking Z.
I think the car companies will always keep trying until they can't.
Yeah, yeah, that's true.
Mike Amour, I have a ZL one manual looking to move to maybe a C eight zero six.
What is a comparable price range Cayman option still manual GT four?
That is a GT.
That's like right in the same price range as C eight zero six.
There are plenty out there.
GT four is what you want.
The eco boosted me.
There you go.
Rise against.
Oh, that's the eco terrorist in me is a good good rise against song.
Very good.
You understood the assignment.
You mentioned a few shows back.
You don't like titanium watches.
I know they're not as cosmetically durable.
Is there another reason?
Yeah, it has nothing to do with cosmetically durable.
I think titanium watches feel cheap.
I think they feel plasticky.
Like I have this debate with with Ali all the time because he's
obsessed with titanium watches and buys all titanium watches.
But like to me, like the weight of titanium is not light enough to impress me
like a Richard meal, but too light to feel like expensive and like solid.
But that's just me.
I think they're pretty durable though.
Trump's thigh gap.
Oh, I originally this is a fuck Mary kill.
Coffee, alcohol and weed, coffee, alcohol, but kept away.
You get two of them.
Are you getting you got to pick two coffee, alcohol, tea and weed?
Well, I would keep coffee and weed.
I would keep coffee and tea, actually, because I don't.
Yeah, I did dry January like and it was great slept so well.
I love Vagcom says, what are some OEM build options that greatly improve
the vehicle's performance and any that are gimmicky and don't enhance performance?
I mean, if you can get if adaptive ride is an option on something that
completely changes the nature of the car.
Sure.
I mean, something like the Z 51 package on a Corvette essential.
OEM built.
I mean, so like in a Mustang, the short, the closer axle ratio,
like if the standard is the whatever it is, three twenty three or something.
And then you can get the three fifty five or the three seventy three.
That will produce a noticeable difference.
Lightweight wheels, noticeably, if they are actual lightweight wheels
and in some cars like on the Miata, so when you get the club sport,
you get the better brakes, I think, and slightly better suspension and seats.
Like that, you get all of that in that package and that can help everything.
Anything that's gimmicky and doesn't enhance performance.
Wings, a lot of the car, I mean, aerobits.
When they go like the stat of it has this much downforce at top speed.
OK, it does.
Technically, that's true.
Yeah, they do that.
They use that to tell you like to give you a bigger number of downforce,
but it's at a speed you'll never obtain.
Um, what are the performance options that don't add performance?
I mean, just wheels of different design, you know,
but that aren't any lighter and don't come with better tires, I guess.
True.
And there's a lot of cars where they'll sell like the sport edition
and it has the same engine as the base one and has other things,
but it's not really that much faster.
I mean, I would say, look, if for if if someone is honest
and they get a GT3 or something and they know they're not taking it to the track
and they get cup two tires, they're going to have an actual worse experience
than if they just got regular tires.
Good point. Yeah.
My spider as a road car is actually better on on PS4S is like right now.
I'm actually driving a GT3 RS on PSS fives
just to see how that car, if it's if it's a better road car on on regular tires
and kind of is, um,
let's see. Anyway, keep going.
See, I see what some.
Oh, man.
Wow.
Jeremy Clarkson spoke in class today as a fabulous username.
My silly punk band just licensed a song for a Nike commercial.
Sweet.
How do you celebrate victories without becoming complicit?
What is becoming complete?
You mean like like you're a punk band that sold a song to a corporation?
I mean, that means involved with others in legal activity or wrongdoing.
So maybe they just mean.
Wait, what?
That's what complicit means.
Well, I know what the word complicit means, but like becoming complicit in what?
Right. That's so.
I think you mean maybe rage against the machine without taking the machine's money.
That is a good question.
Sometimes.
I mean, look,
if you license a song to a corporation to use for a commercial,
but they don't like change the song and it's not for it's Nike.
It's not for like, you know, it's not like ice fucking using it
for one of their fucking what they call for it's it's not actually a meme.
It's just a really mean video.
But yeah, I don't know.
I think I think you got to pay the bills, man.
Yeah, I don't think I think there's you're not selling out
like you're getting paid for the art you made.
Yeah. And if that allows you to keep making art in the way that you want to.
And you have to find that balance.
But yeah, I think it depends on who's using it and for what end.
So there's a lot of during the campaigns and other stuff where like a song was
taken and used for a political campaign that the artist did not align with.
And they would send them a cease and desist letter and say,
do not use my song for your walkout stage shit.
Yeah, you can't do that. Yeah.
Yeah, I think unless you're incredibly ideologically opposed to Nike specifically,
I don't I think you could still play punk music
and license your song to them for a commercial.
I think I think that's OK.
Yeah, it becomes when you.
How do you if you catch yourself writing music and going,
I think this would be good for commercials.
That's maybe that's maybe where you draw the line.
You know, keep doing the art and then maybe commercial will come to you, I guess.
I think it just depends on which company approaches you.
And if you're OK with their business practice. Yeah.
Uh, Gerr Corolla.
OK, I currently lease a Corolla and I'm thinking about buying it.
My wife and I are hoping to have children soon and love camping and outdoor activities.
My concern with the Corolla is its size and ground clearance.
We do light offroading to campsites and getting the ski resorts in the snow.
I've seen used Kyan's go for about the same price
as I would buy out the Corolla around 35 grand for a good example
that supposedly needs nothing and has a warranty question.
Do I buy the Corolla and a set of entry level rally style coilovers
for a moderate lift and a wheel and tire package?
That sounds fun.
Or do I buy a Kyan and put can you scroll down to make sure I'm
do I return the Corolla and purchase an older Kyan or something else
that comes to mind in that price range that doesn't need modifications?
I mean, that's an interesting math question because, you know,
what's the cost of the coilovers in the wheel and tire package versus
using that money and saving it for repairs on the Kyan?
Of course, the Kyan repairs could easily eclipse what you could spend on rally suspension.
True. So that could go really bad.
But you could also if you could buy a used Kyan with a fucking
extended warranty and if you doesn't need to modify it,
you've got a couple of years, unlimited miles, no worries.
Yeah. I would probably, unless you like, love this Corolla so much,
you know, buying out a lease only really makes sense.
If you're going to keep this thing for a really long time.
And I think you're building a contraption to do this task,
but is this contraption going to be optimal for that thing?
Like, how is it going to, I don't know, change its handling on the road
and handling on the highway and miles?
We got like in reliability and in the angle of the half shaft and all that stuff.
Like you're kind of going down and you're making an experiment,
whereas the Kyan is like made to do exactly what you are trying to do with a vehicle.
So my excitement for the Corolla, I'm like, that's a cool project idea.
But I think the smart money would be by the Kyan.
Right. I think you could probably do the Corolla plan and it would probably be fine.
But I think you might have a better experience
just having a stock car with a warranty to do those types of activities.
Plus, I mean, your, well, your kids will be small for a while.
So like the backseat of the Corolla is fine, but it's pretty tight.
Kyan has way more space. Yeah. So that might come in play.
It is a small backseat. Yeah. Yeah.
Anymore? Yes. All right.
How BB come back?
I just bought my first automatic car.
I like it. It's an Lexus IS 500.
I'm self conscious that my 20 plus years of shifting technique will be lost.
Can you heal in tow quickly after long periods away from a stick?
I'm considering a thrasher track rat to go back to a manual, but I'm tight on space.
I was I will say that you do have to keep it up.
I think you'll get rusty. Yeah. But it will come back very quickly.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
I think you're right.
I think you'd have you'd have a bit of a transitional period.
But it could be like an hour or like depending on the car.
I think it's really quick.
But getting getting a track, getting a manual car for fun sounds fun.
Very true. Yeah.
You can do it. Yeah.
But if they're tight on, if you're if you're really only getting it
because you're worried about losing the skill, don't.
It's like riding a bicycle.
But if you just are looking for a way for us to justify you getting a track car,
we can help with that. Yeah.
All right. I am going to have to pee really bad.
I'm going to say one more.
And then we will call it last.
Oh, they are ones.
OK. All right.
Let's say gated manual trans 15 to 20 K weekend car must have manual
and fit two adults and two small children prefer.
I mean, prefer V eight, but other options are good that make good sounds.
Generally reliable and live in Louisiana.
I'm looking for an 0 4 to 0 7 CTSV and GTO.
What else should I be considering?
Mustang GT. I mean, yeah, nothing.
You've you've done such a great job of defining what you want.
This is a great way to ask.
This is a great way to ask because you lead yourself to the answer.
There's only like four possible options here.
Mustangs, Camaro's and those cars that derive from them.
That's really it.
It's like what fucking year?
What fucking body? What do you what do you want?
There you go.
Twenty twelve Mustang GT, premium coupe, six P manual, supercharged, 15 grand.
I mean, look, they were so on cars and bids and there are 2018 Mustang
coupe, white manual, unmodified with performance package, $19,000.
Yeah, there you go.
This stuff, you it's and you'll have the pick of the litter
when it comes to these things.
So you can kind of choose Shevier, Camaro or that 95 Mustang GT,
convertible, Mario Andretti, 12,000 miles, supercharged, a no sale at 12 G's.
Pull that fucking thing up.
Matt.
Dude, that looks like it's modified like my spider.
It's got the side scoops like my spider.
It's got HREs, dude.
Those are HRE wheels.
It really those those spokes are too small.
That is the same year and colored car of my my car in high school.
It's the same year.
Did yours have the signature on the side?
No, but those are HRE wheels and the same kind of sides.
How did I not see this?
We're going to see.
Oh, I just thrown 13 G's in for this.
This red shifter, red shifter.
That's not bad.
12,000 miles.
This would have been a hell of a car.
It's supercharged, too.
Damn, I wish I saw that.
It's a no sale, right?
I know it's a no sale.
Damn them.
I probably could.
Selena, Kansas.
Huh. Oh, what a road trip.
Dude, that's kind of hilarious, actually.
I can't believe that's on there.
Yeah, you that's what you want.
All right.
Meekam, meekam, you come.
We all come.
Love that.
Wants to ask about the Hearst writer strike.
When I came, when we when Zach was sorting the questions
for the show this morning, he said, Hey, Matt,
what's up with the Hearst writer strike to which I
DM'd or messaged my editor and I was like, Hey, are we on strike
to which no response.
I have, I don't know anything, nothing.
Apparently some writers did a half day walk out yesterday.
Would responding be breaking the strike?
I don't think so.
I don't know.
No idea.
But the strike occurred at the Hearst.
It was an it was like a walkout that happened at Hearst Tower.
And I don't think any road and track employees actually
work at Hearst Tower.
Oh, some might know that a couple of years.
No, you know, who might some like art department people might,
I think, but not like editorial.
No one editorial who writes.
I don't think works in Hearst Tower at all.
Anyway, point being, I learned about it after you.
Person who has the question.
I don't know shit.
I'm sorry. Yeah, they did a half day walk out after a month
of negotiations with management failed to reach a deal.
Sure.
Well, in case you're wondering, I'm on the side of the writers.
I'm not a union member, but I'm on the side of the writers always.
Because I'm actually not even employee.
I'm an independent contractor.
So that's our show, people.
Thanks for having us in your cars, in your ears, talking mad shit.
Providing advice, a value, extremely valuable advice.
Fucking cayenne hybrid.
So that's to do some homework.
Everyone in the in the comments or in the chat was like,
you want more towing capacity
and also pay attention to the braking capacity when towing.
Yeah, there's the pulling weight.
And then there's like, how well can you stop this?
Yeah, sure. Yeah.
Fortunately, Porsche has multiple brake sizes for different cars.
And PCC bees.
No, they have the other ones.
They have the PCS bees, the white caliper.
Yeah, that's the other one.
But I think cayenne's have not just cayenne's have Regen, too.
So they have they have a serious amount of not just caliper,
but of regenerative brake capacity, too.
I don't know. I figured out what we do.
We get a press car and we try it.
I mean, we try before we buy.
I learned that fucking lesson.
No more focus our S mistakes for me.
We try before we buy always.
Thanks, everybody. See you next time. Bye.
