and and Scotty, you know, when you guys walked off, I think there was chatters was there as well.
You were like, go, just close my eyes.
It was like I'm listening to the podcast, like just hearing you guys hearing you guys talk. So nice to have a listener of
the show who's actually keen to to jump on and, and and have a chat. So, so welcome.

But before we get into our car updates, let's let's introduce you, Jim. So Jim, again, long time
listener of the of the podcast, member of the esteemed Honda Car Club in Victoria, owns a few cars himself.
So tell us a little bit a little bit about your Jim and about some of the cars that you own so our listeners can get a grasp of who you are and, and the and the cars that that you that you drive. OK so I've probably been a
member of the Honda Club for about about 8 years now.
My first car was an EG civic sedan dual car.
I currently own 4 civics, prelude, Ford laser and cheddar highs. And I'm also another fellow
educator as well. I've got a lot on this podcast,
so. Scotty would be enjoyed.
Yeah. So, so you've got.
OK, so, so you've got a prelude. You've got 3 civics you said, or
4? Just try and count.
Hang on one 2-3. Sorry, 3 civics and a jazz.
I forgot the jazz. Yeah, so 3 is currently 3 civics
and a jazz. You you know when you're into
cars, when you've got to remember how many you've got, and you've got to start counting when you've got a fair few.
Yeah, I should start chromologically, otherwise I forget, but yeah, it's it's quite funny.
I've got one for every day of the week so.
Absolutely. But you mainly drive your Ek,
correct? Yeah.
Yes, that's my daily driver. That's the one that this my my
workhorse, Yes. And, and this, this E this Ek
you've put on a bazillion miles like it's, it's, it's quite, it's quite the story. It's quite the car.
We're talking about it. And it's, it's quite a, it's a
weird, it's like a Japanese import, isn't it?
This one? It's a bit of a jump so.
So my my first my first car was Japanese import.
That's that was the EG. Yes, EG yeah, but my, my Ek is
actually has been in the Honda Club for 22 years.
So it was actually owned by the father of friend of Mr Prince and I bought it when that previous owner passed away.
So I've had it now for six and about 6 1/2 years.
I bought it with 193,000 KS on it.
When I spoke to it secure it had 474 and now it has 476.
Well, it's always at 4:50 that's see, see Rob and and you and you say Hondas. Well, Hondas that that's they're
the best. I'm hoping to have 500 by
Classic Japan in December, so yeah.
Just just a little context. You do a lot of driving in it.
Yes, so I do. I was doing about 1000 K's a
week but then now I'm also attending TAFE on weekends so it's about 11-12 hundred K's a week.
Yeah, Yeah, you should probably get there, I'd say.
Yeah, no, very, very good. And when we got you into cars,
like were you always into cars or were you you're?
Pretty much always into cars, like when I was younger it was more into like locally made stuff in Big V eights and stuff like that as well. But I spent most of my life
living near Phillip Island and watching a number of races where, you know, V8's always funded to the and then watching them as their breaks start to glow red hot and they run out of traction and they go backwards. And then you go, okay, that was
fun for a few minutes. So I think and then obviously
when you're young, a lot of the car is sort of aspired to you can't afford. So it's looking around.
But it was actually quite funny because I had the relative I I spent a lot of time with was very anti Honda actually, but her very trusted mechanic recommended to me as a first car. And when his daughter was moving
into a BMW, he offered me the Civic and I became rusted on after that. And my relative had to very but
gradually accept it when they could no longer drive and they were stuck being in my Honda. So that was really funny.
Well. You're not, you're not just a
Honda man. Like, yeah, out of all the
Hondas you had, you did. So you didn't mention you got a,
you got a laser. So you're definitely welcome on
this side of the podcast. And Rob's just like off.
Yeah. Yeah, no, I have good memories
of being given to school in a KB laser gear manual, and it, that was so cool. Unfortunately, mine's an
automatic, but still, I love it. Not the same build quality as my
Honda, but yeah, I enjoy nonetheless too.
And I went to drive in a car without new power steering, so that doesn't faze me at all. Yeah.
So, so that that's a KB GL correct?
Yes. Yeah.
And that's a. That's a automatic 1.5.
Yes, yeah. I'm not sure exactly of the
colour colour, I need Mr Prince for that, but it's green.
It's like a brown interior. There will there will yeah, a
lot of them with with that combo.
But yeah, they've they've held the test of time.
They're they're they're definitely a good thing and I'll be interested just to see that car one day actually that that'd be that'd be really. Really cool.
Absolutely. Yeah, it's, yeah, it's one of
the many projects on on the list of the Moment 2.
And yeah, it was a bit of an impulse purchase.
I have learned the hard way that, you know, I probably shouldn't spend as much time on grades as I do.
I end up buying too many cars that way.
But hey, we're only live once, so.
Absolutely 100% and you you're probably what what generation probably do you. Have that's 3rd and probably so
that's the first one with four wheel steering pull up.
Headlights. That's a cool car.
Yes, I bought it from my optometrist so I've seen it near me and I've often wondered who owned it.
And then one time around Christmas time about I think it was 2022 or something, I start being driven and then I went Oh my pub trust is driving it. And then when I saw him I said
to him, if you ever want to sell it let me know.
And then he said Oh no it's fine at the moment.
And then I had just bought my Ed Civic and about 3 days later he goes, oh remember when I spoke about the prelude and I'm like great, here we go. And then he said, Oh, yes, well,
I want to sell it now. OK, great.
And you know, being a teacher, it's they.
Don't really have like. Money growing on trees anyway.
But anyway, so I've got that. So I've got 160,000 KS.
It's been in his family since new.
His father bought it originally, but one of his sons I think when they're going to like parked it out on the street.
And so it's quite sun to bake, sun baked.
And when I've driven it, it's quite fun watching, but paint literally flake off while I'm driving.
So yeah. But it's only got 165,000 KS and
I think so it's pretty low really.
Is that registered that one or is that on a club plate or?
It's still registered, but it's currently in storage at the moment, yeah, but yeah, not the ongoing project.
And is that a manual or is that an order?
No, it's not a medic. Unfortunately nearly all of my
cars were American, but yeah. Boring, but it's it's still full
of steer prelude and you know, a lot of people don't realise like that was that was a pretty hot car back in the day like that was. Absolutely.
I was so straight away with the rhino height just went, yeah, that that's perfect. Yeah, none of this is climbing
up into a tree thing. Oh, lovely.
And I asked our first time guests on the show, always this question, if you had to get a car with, you know, that you really, really want, what would it be?
I can never answer it because it's just like, oh, there's so many to choose from so. There's there's so many and also
being neuro spicy too. It just completely changes every
few minutes. But probably at the moment I'm
going to be a little bit left field and say something like and I'm strong, Sydney 346 I think. Yeah, classy car like that one.
That's a good choice. Well, welcome to the show, Jim.
You know how our show works. We do our car updates and then
we get into our overarching topic of the evening.
So let's begin with some car updates.
Let's start with Scotty. Me, yeah, nothing exciting.
All I did was gave the blade a wash and I don't know if it's if any of you are the same but not a fan of washing cars.
I love it. I thought it was therapeutic.
I don't, I just end up with a sore.
I just end up with a sore back and and then black rims.
Oh, don't get me started. Black wheels are the worst.
And the other thing that I complain about is when you wash it. That's when you start finding
little new stone chips and Nicks and things like that in it.
And I just found a new tiny, tiny din and a mark on the side of the blade as I'm, you know, I hate it.
I hate it. So when you find all that stuff,
that just makes you sad. Yeah, Yep.
And I like being sad. I don't like being sad, but I do
like having a clean cut. It's nice.
There's there's a balance to be had between the therapeutic part and the you needing remedial therapy afterwards part.
And I think I always managed to crossover and for that second part, most of the time, and I'm like it's gonna be a quick wash.
3 hours later, I'm still out there.
I'm like, all right, you done it again.
Why you do this? You know why you like this.
Yeah. Why couldn't it just be a wash?
Why did I have to do the whole process?
Yeah. I I find it like I I love it.
I I could spend all day in a car and just I got my little brushes for my for my vents and and things and, and Steph will be like, where is this guy? And I'll be in the garage and
you know, just just polishing and and just brushing and I always said also, is it clean? No, no, is it as clear as it
could be? No.
So then I go back and clean it even more.
I get out my, my, my, my steamer.
You know, I get I I go to town now I love it.
It's full day event for me. That that for me.
Is like money come round. Yeah, I'm back.
I was. Happy you can do your car, Yeah,
and I'll shat your BBQ or whatever you want.
You can come clean. Dodd, I'm over.
I just remember the day we did the MR2 that.
Was a good day. Yeah, I think we spent like 3
and a bit hours by the end of it and there was no polishing.
That was just decontaminating and then just coating it with it was a hand protectant, but still, like it was nice.
It popped. I still have that picture of a
misty Edward Bunting doing the, oh, water feeling Toyota jump.
Yeah. That was good.
That was fun. I do remember that.
So you gave the gave the blade a clean.
Scotty regretted your decision. Need to see an osteopath and
that's that's where you're at. Yeah, yeah.

Unfortunately, yeah, not a huge amount of exciting stuff on my end either. Finally got the Dmax booked in
for the, what do you call it, that recall.
Much to my chagrin, there was another recall that I just hadn't been informed about. So I can get the two in one
service at least. Which is good combo.
Yeah, I think I'm taking it or my dad will be taking it.
And next Tuesday I just booked in a time that was convenient for them to wake up later on in the day rather than why, you know, get there at 7:00 or something and wait for them to open. And then I would just take one
of the other cars to work. But so they they do that.
What is it? The oil dipstick and the fuel
delivery hose might be entangled or rubbing on each other, leading to a possibility of fire.
So they'll have to deal with that.
That's the most recent recall. Apparently there's also an ECM
flashing that needed to take place and that's been since like August last year. And you know, I didn't get no
paperwork about that. So it also it would have
happened right after I got the car serviced.
So it wouldn't have been done during the service either.
So I've been running the car with at least, you know, recall issue since then. Maybe it's a lower tier recall
that's why it's then send out the notices or something.
But basically I think they described as the car can, in some situations lose power and stall, leading to a dangerous situation. So I can't tell if this is like
a high, like you're on Hwy speeds, that sort of thing because that's never happened to me.
What I have had it happen a few times in the D Max is when you're moving off at a slow pace, but then let's say it's a roundabout, you're trying to kind of edging forward and you get an opportunity. So you kind of put your foot
down a little bit more. I've had a few situations of
where the car's kind of almost died on me for a second or it seems like it's kind of about to shift up in a second and then it's like, Oh no, I can't do that.
And it's confused. So you kind of like bog down for
half a second and then it picks back up and gets going.
So it might be that that they're talking about.
I'll probably get more information when they drop off the cargo. I'll meant to ask a few
questions, but they probably won't give any decent answers.
But it's it's it's still weird to me that I've never got any contact about that recall. So at least, you know, two birds
with one stone. I think she was she was going to
go for the traffic that she was like, oh, you know, your service is coming up. I was like, I still got another
5000 KS lady. Like let me wait till the end of
July. You know, you can have your $680
or whatever it is. Cap price my ass.
It's like cap price servicing. But would you like an AC
service, you know, or whatever it was?
I think they wanted like 180 bucks for that and then they want to sell me tyres for like 1500 bucks.
A dollar wiper blades. Yeah, yeah.
So I'll have by the time it gets there, I'll have a new cabin Philtre, I'll have a new fuel Philtre.
I've already had the new tyres put on what, a month and a half ago? I'm looking forward to what
they're trying offer me. But that's that's for I guess
future, future episodes. So in the meantime, it'll just
be the recall and then that should be it.
I think I gotta get the the Honda booked in for a service because it's been about a year since I purchased that off.
Misread. Yeah.
So I might just take it to the old rat man, or he'll just give me a lot of book service. Yeah, very easy, very nice.

Rob updates with you. Just got the couple of dints
taken out of Harley's C63 that was passed on to us from delivery from North Shore Mercedes when we got it.
Finally got all the densol, fixed it and straightened out of the the quarter panels. So that looks good.
Booking my niece's car for a service.
Harley's car has been serviced. I'm getting mine detailed on
Friday. So yeah, just sort of just
general things. But getting the cars detailed
and washing the cars is the best time to do all the wiper washer fluids, check the oils, make sure it's all OK, and if you want a good paint, a paintless dent remove guy, just let me know Scotty and I'll put you on to him.
Will do. Rob's pity.
No, I won't do it. I've got the little PDR kit.
You can try it at your own whim. But yeah, you can.
Yeah, you can definitely try it, but it's very difficult to try doing it yourself. I haven't had too much success
trying to do that. The dent removals myself with
the glue guns, it's some of it's worked if some of those into panels in some cars. So other cars it's just it keeps
on popping off because it's just the metal's too strong.
Even though you try to heat it up a little bit and glue it on and and then try to pop it, it doesn't always pop.
Yeah, pedia, especially at the highest level is such an art.
Like you just see them go at it and you know, you're like, I don't even see anything there in the 1st place.
The next thing you know they're like Nope, there it is.
I can already tell that if that little weird thing with the lines in it reflecting and they're going at it to poking things and whacking it. And I'm like, just that is like,
you know, a lot of witchcraft. Yeah.
A lot of automotive services are like, you know, some Hogwantry and stuff. But that is some you can see
where your money's going, like in in a level of skill that a person's built up over the years.
Yeah. Absolutely.
With the with the with my old Volvo, the S60 that had one of the hailstorms got hit and got got sort of with PDR and again, guys did a did a killer job with it.
Yeah, couldn't recommend anything else higher if you're not looking to race spray or anything like that.
Again, definitely black magic going on there.
So yeah, I had five dinks removed, $300.00.
It's pretty good. Hey, that's good.
I've got to get my laser done. It just, it just seems to
attract all the hits. So that, that'll, that, that'll
get done at some point. Cindering they charge you to do
like to fill a crack or something in your windscreens already like a couple 100 now to do that job.
You know, I've done it myself and I, I don't think mine is any worse than the professionals to tell you true.
Yeah, yeah, I agree with that. You buy the kits.
Well, we sell them at work and we, we, we.
See those? We've got a German at work that
does it on the side and I've seen some of his repairs and I'm like mate, I'll get better repair out of $30 kit from Supercheap. To be fair, he didn't, he didn't
have the full vacuum machine. Yeah, but he did have like,
we'll call it pro ish level of gear that I think he stole from one of those old joints. I think it's sometimes it's just
the crack. The crack ain't, you know, it's
not going to cooperate with you. It is what it is.
Yeah. But yeah, those like the kids
that you can kind of get retail, especially if the crack is just really also the ship is really, really small.
I would just go with that. Yeah.
I think even he he's like it's a side hustle job, but he still charges like I think $108.00 plus GST.
Yeah, OK. Wow.
Anthony, updates with you. Well, nothing too crazy, I
probably didn't mention this one here ages ago, but back in end of Feb after one of my nights I did have a have an incident in the territory where I overslept and was then running late to work and end up reversing into my mum's car that was parked on the street. So yeah, again, very minor
damage, but it was more just do an insurance claim to get mum's car fixed more than anything else.
But that was a. That's the tail light on both of
our cars and sort of scuff off the bumper.
As interesting as I got as I got that repaired the other leg from a Capital Smart lovely establishment and they're pretty average work to be honest. Had to had to bring it back to
them. Oh sorry, first time I brought
it back, the bumper was too light and clearly a different colour in that instance. So they then resprayed the
entire bumper again. They got the colour better, but
there was a couple of scuffs that need to be polished out and then had to go back this week, went back on Friday and they they polished out those couple of scuffs.
But yeah, again, it's, it is sort of what you expect for, for the service. But you know, in the end we we
got there, that's probably about as exciting as we sort of get for any sort of car updates with me that's more to speaking trial updates being made for the last little bit.
Yeah, and how is the little 1 going?
Yeah, yeah, she's going good. She's going good.
She's 8 weeks 8 weeks old now as of as of Monday.
Which again, where does the time go?
But now she was asleep on me for probably the last 2 1/2 hours after a feed. So she's due for another feed
soon but thought screw it, I'll try and transfer her to A to the bassinet and Chuck the baby monitor on and get onto the show for a little bit. So in case I do have to dart
off. I've done, I've done what I can
with what I can, but we'll see how we sort of go.
But yeah, for the most part, everything else is good.
Otherwise, man, just that's good.
And eight sleep, work, repeat and watch her.
Gladly. I've got another two weeks off,
so I've been able to look after her a bit more and help Jess out a bit more. Yeah, nice.
But that's quite familiar overall, guys.
Yeah, sweet Jim. Anything new with your cars that
you've done recently in the last week or so?
Especially I try and wash mine every week.
I did make the mistake of putting some alloy wheels from an EUCV come on mine which look OK but break dust.
My God I think I'm gonna have nightmares or get a nervous twitch and have to clean it off every week.
Far up and I think it's due for its next service in.
Well. Probably next week with me.
I'm driving. I do I do quite enjoy,
especially with Honda dealers when I bring them up to book inner service. I've not for a while with a
Honda dealer perfectly and I'll tell them what the mileages and they go, Oh, what, what what month interval is that?
And I go, I don't know, 4,000,002 like you can't go by month interval when it's got only 500,000 KS guys.
But anyway, it's so it's probably yeah, so I'll book that in again soon. And I think it's got a bit of a
slack sort of cable because it's getting a little bit very sluggish to respond to input. I don't think it's like
injectors or something else. It like it genuinely feels as
though it's sort of like loading sort of a little bit like when you've got a virus on your computer sort of thing.
So hopefully it doesn't there will help and yeah, but otherwise, no, it's it's, yeah, doing what it usually does, starting every day without any dramas at all.
It's being a Honda, which is a good thing.
Typical, yeah. Thanks with me.
I've had a busy week so I've been driving the MR2 all week, which has been good. I've been driving, I've been
driving the crap out of it just to enjoy it.
I got some parts that came in the other day that I ordered from the UK because the UK seemed to be the best part place to get all part, you know, secondhand parts and stuff for for this thing. So I got my new oil cooler with
secondhand oil club. It looks to be in good nick.
And I got a whole key, whole key set for the car.
So I was like, yeah, you know, I can install these.
So we're started working on that.
Put the boot instant, put the boot one on 1st.
That was easy to 5 minutes go to do the at the driver's door and because someone had tried to break into the car before, so that they're just kind of like they plugged up the hole like, Oh yeah, I'd assume that they just, you know, broke the key barrel and they've just covered it.
So no one tries to, to put the key in the ignition.
Took the door handle out, took all the covers off and everything pulled the door handle, door handle off and there is nothing behind it. So it was just quite literally a
hole. So I was like, great, that
that's, that's interesting. So then I put the new key barrel
in and then put, put the door handle back into the door and said, where does this click into?
There's like a rod inside the door that opened, you know, that unlatches and matches the, the, the locking mechanism on the door missing. I'm like, oh God.
So, so, so when they've taken out the, when they've damaged the key barrel, they've just removed the whole thing.
So then I was like, OK, we'll have to open the passenger side.
So as it went to the passenger side, took the door off, replaced it, took the, took the rod out of that one and had a spare piece of rod. And I was just bending and
trying to make it work and I kind of made it work and it works OK. So I'll put the other one back
in and, and as soon as I was tidying everything up, you know, I was doing it in a pretty good time.
You could I have to use A10 mil spanner in there.
And of course it's a 10 mil for this next bit and tightening, tightening. And then it like the spanner
like flicked off and it went into the abyss of the door, but it went where so like, and I was just like, oh man, like I, I can't get it. I, I tried for 3 1/2 hours last
night to get it out. I got, I went to bed at 1:30 in
the morning because I was trying to get this damn thing out of the, out of the pool. So it's, it's, so, you know, how
cars have got like, you know, impact, side impact, like the, the, the, what are they called the side impact protection, you know, strengthening bars in the, in the doors.
So in the MR2, it's kind of got that, but it's kind of got like a like a corrugated roof kind of style and it's going behind that and that's kind of welded to the skin of the door.
So for 3 1/2 hours just trying to get it out.
I couldn't get it out. I can't even really see it.
So I decided that has now become one of one with the car.
So I put this. So Maddie.
Have you lost just the socket? No the the actual 10 mil
spanner. The spanner.
I was going to say, can you hear it?
Well, I haven't driven the car. I didn't.
I didn't take it to work today because I was so pissed off at it. I was like, this is just insane.
Then stuff's like, where the hell have you been?
It's 1:30 in the morning. I'm like.
I don't want to talk about it. Funny story, you've asked I'll
I'll go to the zoo. You need to do a Jeremy Clarke
to where you spin the car for a tunnel upside down.
Yeah, yes. And get it out.
Of that'll that, that'll do it. But I was actually half tempted.
I'm like, I want to take this freaking door off.
I want to I'm going to take it off and I want to shake it upside down and just I'm going to I'm going to take off.
So if because I'm going to drive it tomorrow, if the rattle is prominent, I will be taking the door off this weekend and shaking the door out and trying to get it out it.
Would absolutely lose your mind if there was a rattle in there and I kept doing it like I I could picture you stripping that whole entire car or just like, I'm just going, I'm buying a new door. No, he likes it original as
possible with, you know, the OEM plus style.
So he's going to drill out the spot welds.
Flipped it off. I kid you not.
I was like, I was like, oh, it's tight.
I'll give it, give it one more for good luck.

gone. 3 1/2 hours, gentlemen, 3 1/2 hours last night.

Did you try wire magnets? What did you do?
Rob, I used the magnet tool. I used the claw tool.
I used the trim removal tools. I used pieces of sheet metal
trying to trying to jiggle it in there.
I used what else did I end up using?
I was using other different sides of types of magnets I used. I used a couple more things.
I kind of what I used screwdrivers I used.
I used like a I even used the stud fighter to see where to try to find out where I was, but that didn't really help.
That was just that was that was no girl.
I was like maybe this might work maybe, but I don't know so.
Around about the 1:30 mark, wasn't it?
So I got to it got to like 1:20 in the morning and I'm like, this is what am I doing with my life?
This is this is it. So I, I was like, Nah, I'm done.
Like I'm like, it fought me for, for, for that time.
I put the door panel on door cut.
I'm sorry, put, you know, timed it all up close the door and then I when I went to lock the key, I realised I didn't click in the the the the last rod that I was that I had to make.
I'm like, oh, you're kidding. So now the title is going to
come off again, but I'm, I'm kind of done with it.
So I'm like, you know, it's, it can stay like that.
It, it didn't, I, I didn't have a key in it in the last five years I've owned it. So it's, it's going to, you
know, I can, I can, I can live without for a little bit longer.
All I have to do now I've got one more, I've just got to change the ignition barrel and then I can, I can have a full set of, you know, you know, brand new keys that'll, that'll work for the car. Because I, I did get for
Christmas AMR two key like a, like a, like a, like a proper replica, like original, you know, really nice key.
And I've been planning to use it like once I get once I get a new, you know, a full new set. So that's so losing my 10 mil
span has kind of put a dampener on that like, and I'm like, what am I saying? What am I trying to find this 10
mil span a bit in my head? I'm like, it's going to rattle,
it's going to annoy me, It's going to ruin my experience with the car. I'm I need to get it and I
couldn't get it. Even if you don't know, don't
hear it, you're going to know it's there A. 100.
Percent. And that part will just hurt you
spiritually. I think now the really normal
question is, do you know somebody with a scoping camera?
I do not actually. Well, Rob, have you got one?
That's gonna be your best friend in this, I think, given the amount of tools you've already exhausted in this pursuit.
Get the scoping camera in there. I think I've got a bit cheaper
and it just plugs into your laptop.

Otherwise, the next step, get some expanding foam and just spray it in there and then it won't rattle because it can't.

It's gonna be it's gonna be the process of me yelling at the car profusely. So yeah, but that was my evening
with the the MR2 last night. But I'm half of that's been
driving really, really well, dropping a little bit cooler because they've they've obviously just bled the system and there's a bit of, you know, overflow until that all you know settles out because it's just had the the whole system redone.
But totally fine. Driving really nicely feels a
lot way more smoother, smoother to drive now that the you know, the gearbox and everything's all all sorted with the clutch and that so yeah, really, really enjoying it.
Except for last night. That was that was a bit of that
was a bit of a pain in the ass. But who am I?
Who am I to say anything? That's just just another thing
to add to my life of cars. But but that's your point, Rob,
sorry and and Scotty of of finding a little, you know, a chip and a din on your car. I was giving the typhoon a clean
and it's got a bottle protector right on that car.
I've got a chip that's just above it and it's a it's a fresh one too. Like you can see where it must
have been the last one I've driven the car and I was just like, I'm like, this is just story again.
So I've didn't have a, didn't have a great car week, but the car's driving well. So stay tuned and find out next

And I think we, we all just, we all loved the jackaroo story.
I think the jackaroo was Alan had had convinced that it was, it was the the the guy that one of the Land Cruisers but couldn't afford it, bought the Jackaroo to to save his marriage. And there was the the financial
strain that broke the family's back.
That's it. It's the on the way to becoming
a low income single dad car it. Is so to continue with that,
I've got another six cars we're going to discuss tonight that we'll we'll go through and see who bought The Who do you think bought these new? So the first one is the Toyota
Lexan. So who bought a Toyota?
Listen now, Rob you. Yeah, I believe you were a
Toyota at this time when this when these were new, Correct.
You were, yeah. So who bought Alexan over a
Commodore? And for what reason would you
have bought Alexan over a Commodore?
Can I that's, I think it was a guy who just retired who plays lawn balls. Yeah.
And bought a new caravan. What at the tow?
One at the tow. But why did you go to it?
Because it's, it's a, it's a Toyota.
It's it's reliable. Yes, no, I.
Don't mind that one. That's a good one.
Yeah, I, I agree with you now, like every time I've seen a Lexan, it was especially as a kid, it was always owned by older people. It was never owned by, by, you
know, the people that owned Commodores and they were always in a lot better. Nick, like we've always said on
this show, if you had AVN Commodore on your on your driveway, you made bad life decisions.
But when you had a Lexan on your driveway, everyone's like, Oh yeah, that's right. You know, it was, you know,
it's, it's, it's a solid car. So they never got that stigma to
that that stigma that the old, the old VN had, which is which is interesting to see. Yeah, I I can't think of any
other reason other than someone that's gone.
Oh yes, it's a good sized, good sized car and Toyota reliability. So they've gone with that.
That's that's kind of what I was going to power on.
Like the whole idea of like, yes, I'm buying a Toyota.
It it it's the same kind of person that would buy a Holden and Polar, But obviously the Toyota version of that.
It's like, Nah, mate, I'll buy Holden's over here and then, you know, they buy a Camry. I'll make Daniel had had a
Holden and Polar in his household as well.
It's just like, I don't know, maybe some people actually got convinced that they were buying a Toyota.
I'm sure you know, or whatever happened at the dealership happened at the dealership. But like, you had to have known,
right, that you're buying a Toyota badge Commodore?
Like Rob, were they more expensive than the Holden counterpart? Like were they more pricier or
were they virtually same price? I.
Think they were touched? Deer on recollection, I remember
when they launched it because I was actually working at Toyota at the time they actually launched it and that the big who are about, you know, Lexan and you know how we won America's Cup and all that sort of stuff. Yeah.
So that's what they sort of based it all around and they had the nice little, I think a little sticker on the side and some other little things that sort of changed it with the actual interior and some little trim, exterior trim bits.
Yeah. Yeah, I don't really know.
Yeah. I can just imagine the Sorry, I
need to cut you off there, just being like an older person who somebody's like, oh, nice Commodore mate.
And they're like. It's not a Commodore, it's
Lexan. Yeah, you see.
That Toyota bench, yeah, You know, you sit there for an hour and be like, please, man, I gotta go to my family.
You don't see too. Many around because I think
everyone's converted them back to a Commodore.
That was quite that was done quite often.

I went to school with with a kid who, I mean, you probably you might, you might have known him Allen, but I won't say his name.
He was a storage holding man. And and he's like, even if I
bought a Camry, it's becoming an Apollo.
I don't care. Like he was, he was that he was
that kind of guy. I remember him saying that, that
that line to me because because he saw my mom dropped me off in the Camry one day and he's like, he bought a tomato.
I'm turning into an Apollo. I'm like, you're an idiot.
But anyway, that's another story.
So, yeah, but were they, were they better equipped for more money? Because I'm just trying to
figure like, why would you spend more money on the Toyota version of it? Like that's that's the they
would have had to have had more factory kit standard, right?
So apparently according to this is again Wikipedia knowledge, so I don't know if it's correct. They were only available with AV
six and only automatic. Correct.
Yeah. So it's like realistically,
again, you'll not be able to get.
I'm not saying you know a manual wouldn't necessarily be a window, but definitely the lack of AV 8 you know you're not getting. I would say the prime example of
the car then. Imagine a imagine a VN Lexan
with like an A1 UZ like the like a proper VNW.
Oh man, that would have been that would have been special.
That would have been a cool car. I.
Might so suggest too that there might have been a demographic, especially as we've discussed being older purchasers who might have being reluctant to try something that wasn't Australian made in their eyes. And, you know, getting having
more of their older friends stepping into Toyotas rather that eventually felt reluctant and then sort of went, Oh, well, you know, kind of a bit of a bridge maybe.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I I can, I can see that, you know, it was an it was an affordable bridge into AV 6 powered car.
You know, full size luxury car, not luxury, but full size like full size sedan. So yeah, I can see how they that
that decision could be made, you know, and and you you probably would have got better service at at your Toyota dealer anyway and you would have got better you know, you probably better warranty and and and stuff like that.
So I remember went forward so the the XF Ute to to Nissan and and Nissan, we're using it as the the the Nissan mute.
I think it got a better, I think it got longer warranty than what Ford offered. So like, yeah, it's, it's, it's
stuff like that that they did weird, weird, weird things back then. But I can see how that that
that'd make sense. You know, I remember as a kid
seeing Lexan's quite, quite often, especially when we'd go to church and there'd be all the old gays in their, in their Lexans and all the younger guys in their, in their Commodores.
So, so it'd be, you know, it was, it was, it was the car for the, the, the more esteemed gentleman.
He wanted a bit more prestige in their, in their badge than, you know, Toyota over, over a Holden.
So All right, so, so if you had to pick it, it'd be an old man wanting to tow, meaning, you know, played lawn balls, wanted to get into a Japanese brand, a proper brand, but didn't want to quite fully commit to an Australian car.
And that's where they ended up with the Toyota Lexan.
I like that one. I think that's a good, I think
that's a good, good outcome. Great.
The biggest thing I'd say would be that bridge between Commodore and and Toyota. Yeah.
Reluctancy. Yeah, I agree with that.
Next one is your sangyongs. So I've got 2 sangyongs tonight.
You're saying young Musso, the original Musso that came out.
Do you remember those though that the big, the big, the big musos. Now I remember when these were
new and I remember the ad forum. I don't know if you guys
remember the ad forum, but they were always told about how the Mercedes reliability on my Mercedes engines.
Musso. It was it was always the ad
probably said Mercedes like 10 times and I'm not even I'm not even kidding. It was it was all you know, I I
loved I loved my Musso. It's, it's got my Mercedes,
Mercedes power car. And then like with Chevy badges
on Commodores, we're seeing Mercedes badges on musos.
Do you guys remember seeing the Mercedes badges on musos?
They were coming out everywhere and I'm like, there's not a Mercedes. It's a muso.
It's a Sangyong. But, but you know, it was, it
was kind of they did sell quite a fair few of them though, to be fair. And they were everywhere for a
short amount of time and then they all vanished.
Like I I haven't seen one in years who bought a muso brand new. Is the same person that bought a
jackaroo or they had a slightly bit more money than the people that bought a jackaroo? I would suggest it might be sort
of a bit like now with the really, really new Chinese brands coming in, the people go, oh, it's a brand new car with a warranty and it's cheaper than the other brands.
And then they would have probably read into the Mercedes part and thought, oh, see, it's great because I heard people at the time discussing that too and just thinking, well, you do you.
But like, you know, try and educate yourself.
Yeah, absolutely. I like that, Jim, because I was
going to say it's, yeah, somebody's just like, I'm going to buy a new car and this is reasonably priced and they don't know any better. They're just like, maybe they
buy into a bit of that advertising puffery and they're like, yeah, I guess I can see the murkiness to it.
There's no murkiness to it. But it wasn't a bad looking car
like it wasn't terrible like like I mean, it wasn't a great looking car like it like. It's not winning any awards.
I guess compared to the stavic. We're going to cover the Stavic
in a minute, by the way. Generally that's that's that's
that's the next one because I would actually want to know who bought that car. But the the Moose are in OK in
comparison, like for like like an 8, let's say an 80 series from the same period daily series is a much more handsome car, much more, much better built car.

Maybe some desperate businesses or family owners saw a bargain and they were, I think, very competitively priced.

And you would have had to have gotten a good deal to get to get one. Like, yeah.
Apparently a lot of them were used as airport taxis because obviously if the extra seating in the space for luggage.

guess the seat's so close to hip level, it really helps out there. And then, you know, it's not so
large that, you know, especially given it's era of no cameras, that sort of thing, it's difficult to park.
And while you're foregoing kind of any other benefit, you know, you're losing the rest of the benefits from the SUV of the large size of storage capacity. You know, you're basically
trading that off for good parking ability.
And then you're trading away everything from, you know, a sedan or something smaller as well with the extra weight.
You're kind of trading all those for that little, little benefit.
And I guess it's worth it for those people.
It was worth it for my mom. She's very happy.
She misses that car sometimes. She's like, I want my car back.

For me, this car to use, like you said, Scotty, definitely an auntie's car, definitely a person's, you know, a person like that who wants something easy to get in.
For me, it's a person's last car they bought.

So you move that on and you want something small that's easy to park and easy to get in your garage.

You know, I think that people, you know, these, these particularly, particularly women, I'm not, I'm not being having a go or anything, but I think that would have found this car, you know, really good value, plenty of cup holders, plenty of this, plenty of that slide into it.
Easy to go cheap, cheap to run, cheap or cheap ish to run because they were quite heavy on fuel, but cheap to fix because it's a Suzuki, you know, and just as a last car, like, you know, it's, it's a car that ends up with your in your estate and it goes to the local guy that sells that's using it for Uber eats as an Uber eats car. That's where it meets us.
