midfield
When you look at the race, the cars in the middle of the pack are called midfield. They're not the fastest leaders but also not the slowest ones at the back.
In racing, 'midfield' refers to the group of cars that are neither at the front (leaders) nor at the back (trailing), typically positions 10-20 in a race.
