Updated 12 days agoAn amateur endurance auto racing team hoping to show everyone that they too can participate in performance driving or racing. We are a relatively new team and learning right along with you. Our assumption is that you know very little to nothing about the sport but are interested in learning to drive better and eventually maybe even race in a local event of interest. We will cover all forms of racing and hope to be entertaining as well as educational.

GHIT 0393: Race Review - Lucky Dog Race at CMP with Read Tull and Ben Dawson
GHIT 0393: Race Review - Lucky Dog Race at CMP with Read Tull and Ben Dawson We start the episode with Read Tull who races in the southeast and had Ben as his first HPDE instructor. Read entered his E36 into the last Lucky Dog event in the southeast for the 2022 season and we share some common pain. The weekend was a mixed bag of several highs and lows, but as always, Lucky Dog ran a great event, and everyone had a great weekend. Ben showed up late to this episode and therefore we learn a lot of behind the scenes stories as well as one of Ben's podium traditions and hope to one day make a podium with Ben and be on guard. The stories we get are priceless, lol. We then move into how the race weekend transpired and how the team conquered or was conquered. Domination? Listen and learn. For any suggestions to help solve the power steering issues, please email us at [email protected] or message us on Instagram etc. Sticker bribes are as always in effect, lol. GHIT 0391: Car Control with Nik Romano
GHIT 0391: Car Control with Nik Romano There are a few fundamental skills that truly separate drivers. The top two that come to mind are car control and race craft. Nik Romano owns FastSideways and also currently drives professionally for Toyota. FastSideways is a driving school that specializes in holding events that offer personal coaching to focus specifically on improving your car control on skid pads and track through a sequence of drills and tests. During the episode, we talk about a wide variety of aspects of car control and hatch a not so subtle, devious plot to hold the first ever east coast FastSideways car control event. Our team has already reserved many spots, but please let us know if you are interested in joining Nik, his instructors, and us at the event. We cannot wait. Perhaps we can talk him into holding it on a local frozen lake? Vicki is already making the hot chocolate. This episode is an ideal follow up to our recent episode on catching a car where Vicki revealed a specific hole in her car control technique. Listen to the tires sing. 3) The advantages and disadvantages of a turbo when trying to drive at the limit. 4) The advantage of recover vs react in CPR. This is a version of our often covered prediction vs reaction discussion, but better. 5) How to use telemetry to assist in your car control and what to look out for. 6) We define what is meant by car control when driving a car on a track or in a high performance condition, such as autocross or even when trying to avoid a potential accident on the street. 7) The relationships between car speed, horsepower/torque, and wheelbase on a car's car control window and inherent ease/difficulty imposed on the driver. 8) We get Nik's definitive answer to what is snap oversteer or lift oversteer. Is it Bigfoot or is it Nessie? 9) We even have a discussion of Senna vs Prost during the episode. How about those for search words for a podcast? Lol. 10) Nik adds to Bill's car purchasing list. Vicki loses her mind for a few minutes. 11) Vicki and Nik discuss drifting, Formula Drift, GridLife, and Gymkhana. Vicki lost her mind the first time she saw this live at GridLife and has gone down a deep YouTube hole. We hope she comes backout soon, lol. 12) How to adapt your driving technique to a car that is either understeering or oversteering. Note this does not involve having your friend running next to the car and making car adjustments. 13) The effect of the type of tire on car control, especially street tires vs racing slicks. This is especially evident by the slip angle of the tire and the performance window where the tires perform best. We also cover the impact that the tire design and manufacturer can have on this as well. 14) The importance of car control on new and inexperienced drivers. it can literally save their lives. 15) One of the best Thunderhill 25 stories we have ever heard. DwD 0392: Balancing Min Distance vs Max Speed
DwD 0392: Balancing Min Distance vs Max Speed On this week's Dominating with Dawson, we start a discussion on the competing priorities of maximizing speed and minimizing distance. Obviously, the balance of these will lead to the fastest lap times, but some areas of a track or sequences of a track will be optimized by sacrificing one or the other in certain areas to reduce lap time. This concept is more often spoken about in autocross but applies to road courses as well. This is especially challenging when you are at a track for the first time. DwD 0389: Catching a Car – FWD vs RWD – This one goes way, way, way off topic While we often talk about car control, we have yet to really discuss the differences between catching a car that is front wheel drive vs catching a car that is rear wheel drive. GHIT 0388: Phil Wurz From Bimmerworld Returns For a Second Lap Phil Wurz is the Sales and Operations Manager for Bimmerworld and also races with the Bimmerworld team at track across the nation. We catch up with Phil on what has been going on with the Bimmerworld team's racing team this season. We also go into the SpecE46 series and the cars involved with them. Phil and the team at Bimmerworld had put together a list with several levels of builds for the SpecE46 series that are budget and performance based. One of the great things is that the SpecE46 racing series is number of entries are usually large enough that there are several races within the race that allow for close competition among the different packs of cars. DwD 0385: Tire Mounting and Balancing - For The Track
DwD 0385: Tire Mounting and Balancing - For The Track For this episode, we go over what to do and what to look out for when mounting and balancing your tires, especially for track use. As with most of high performance driving, we are pushing the tire and wheel/rim more than is "normal" and therefore we are more sensitive to certain aspects and maintenance practices than a normal, daily driven vehicle. We talk about several things to look for and look out for when having your tires mounted and balanced or even when doing it yourself. There is one key aspect that we look out for more than any other. In addition, we have three entrants with birthdays today, so everyone wish them all a happy birthday. On this episode we are joined by Rally Master Jeff Stobbs and Tarl and Kirk, two entrants from the Cut Rate Roofing team in their "convertible" Econoline. Tomorrow is the last day for this event, and we may or may not be reporting back again tomorrow as most entrants and teams will be making a mad dash to return home. Some may even be silly enough to try to make it into work on Monday. Rookies, lol. DwD 0378: Racing 101: Jargon – What is Brake Pad Walk Back or Knock Back
DwD 0378: Racing 101: Jargon – What is Brake Pad Walk Back or Knock Back On our racing 101 series, we often go over jargon that can confuse you at the track. In this episode, we start to talk about brake pad walk back or knock back. This can occur on many cars and be caused by several sources. We try to talk about what it would feel like on your car and what you can do to minimize its effect while on track. We also speculate on what can be the sources in your braking system that can lead to having this condition. Please fee free to expand upon our discussion, as we have rarely experienced this phenomenon on track. As a bonus, we also discuss a few other brake pedal related feelings that you may encounter on track and what the cause of them are. GHIT 0377: Gary McCormick From Tweed Motorsports
GHIT 0377: Gary McCormick From Tweed Motorsports After racing, well almost racing with us, at our last race at Thompson, Gary is now a guest on the podcast and welcomed back at any event we attend in the future. We talk with Gary about his experience with rugby and his transition from traditional ball and stick sports into what is now his racing team - Tweed Motorsports. Having raced in many disciplines and with many series in a rapid succession, Gary provides his perspective on endurance racing vs sprint racing, as well as his experience getting his racing license from an open wheel racing school. We also go through how Gary felt at his first ever Lemons event with us and how it may have differed versus his expectations. The code phrase for this episode is: Hunting For Space. DwD 0376: Threshold Braking – One Tool to Rule Them All ? On this Dominating with Dawson, return to the topic of threshold braking and address several aspects of the technique. In addition, we start to review several ways to practice the technique safely on track. We then discuss the proper use of the technique, where and when, as well as how to determine when to use the technique and potentially where not to utilize it. There is a bit of disagreement on the team on the utilization of threshold braking when on track. GHIT 0375: Ken Hill – On The Line and the Fundamentals of Performance Driving
GHIT 0375: Ken Hill – On The Line and the Fundamentals of Performance Driving Ken Hill returns to the podcast to discuss the racing line and the key, fundamental factors that contribute to consistent, fast, and safe lap times. As with all things related to high performance driving and racing, the optimal line is really a complex solution to a series of variables including track conditions, car performance, and driver skill, but the "line" is really fundamental with minor changes to account for the potential for the car to corner, accelerate, and decelerate. In the end, the goal is to have the car in the right place at the right time to be capable to accelerate at full throttle for the longest amount of time. The best way to approach this is to work backwards and therefore starts with corner exit and the point where the driver can safely put down maximum power for positive acceleration. Then we should work backwards through the reference points of the turn to accomplish this goal. The earlier in the turn, the more variable the position and the approach angle will be to car and track conditions. In the end, the preferred strategy will usually focus on the critical points of reference with the prioritization of exit speed and angle for most cases/turns. We also discuss the variation of the corner apex as a function of the performance of the vehicle. Typically, the variation is much less than most think, on the order of a few feet, with faster cars typically having a later apex. This is one of our better episodes and Bill is already on his third listen, lol. DwD 0374: What Line Is It Anyway? – An Why Are There So Many
DwD 0374: What Line Is It Anyway? – An Why Are There So Many A long time listener wrote in and had a question about "The Line". It appears that there are several lines. One line is the school line or the HPDE line. Then there is the race line or racing line. It appears that the listener is stuck between the line the "looks" correct to them, and the school line and is trying to transition to the racing line. All of this is leading to a bit of indecision and almost confusion on track. Not a good situation. In this episode we go over the various lines and how/why each exist and what to do to gain consistency. GHIT 0373: JG Pasterjak from Grassroots Motorsports
GHIT 0373: JG Pasterjak from Grassroots Motorsports JG Pasterjak joins us for a great episode that starts off with a brief history of his driving and work with Grassroots Motorsports magazine and website. In addition to being involved with the articles, JG is also a passionate driver and tinkerer on his car and many of the project cars that are the subject of many articles and threads within the magazine and website. We are often searching the GRM website when we are trying to solve a problem or improve our cars for the track. We also cover a recent fire that JG had in his MR2 and what he has learned from the experience. JG was even kind enough to indulge us when we tried to discuss a few of the recent articles that have helped us and our friends. Including the project of converting a road car to a track car. DwD 0372: Troubleshooting: Crank No Start Condition
DwD 0372: Troubleshooting a Crank No Start Condition On this Dominating with Dawson, we take advantage of a problem that we are having with our 1993 Honda Civic SI (D16Z6 for the home gamers) race car and use it as a working example of how to troubleshoot an issue. As with most parts of working on a car, we are a work in progress, some would even say "In Training", lol. We utilize our pain to try to work through the logic of a car not working and trying to diagnose the issue. If you like these types of Dominating with Dawson, please let us know. We break enough and have plenty of issues with our cars to make this into a near limitless series long into the future. Guest appearance from Jeremy during this issue. GHIT 0371: Tim Burr – Our First Member of the Sorry For Party Racing Team
GHIT 0371: Tim Burr – Our First Member of the Sorry For Party Racing Team One of the fun things about meeting someone on the Sorry For Party team for the first time is whether they are in their race team regalia or in civilian clothes. We have found that often we have met the same person twice without knowing it. Tim Burr is no exception. We finally placed the name and the face at the spring PittRace event and then he joined us for the Thompson event while racing with Jeremy's El Jeffe Trophy Truck team. This episode gave us an opportunity to get to know Tim a bit better and how he has progressed to this point in racing and life. A great episode with a great person. In addition, during this episode, we go into the history of the Sorry For Party team, What to do and what not to do or look out for as an arrive and drive driver, as well as an in seat review of both the El Jeffe Trophy Truck and the 3PM Cheaties Cressida. DwD 0370: Overdriving vs. Underdriving
DwD 0370: Overdriving vs. Underdriving When trying to improve as a driver there are many instances where the same driver can be overdriving their car and at other points on the track can be underdriving. In addition, the best of us also can have areas where we do one or the other and our lap times area adversely affected. For this episode, we talk about some indications of a driver under driving their car and other indications where the driver driving the car. While people grow in their driver education and skills, most will have a personality predisposition towards one side of the spectrum generally. We use this episode of DwD to try to explain the jargon and help you determine where and when you may be under or over driving and some things to do to continue to improve.
