Updated 12 days agoAn amateur endurance auto racing team hoping to show everyone that they too can participate in performance driving or racing. We are a relatively new team and learning right along with you. Our assumption is that you know very little to nothing about the sport but are interested in learning to drive better and eventually maybe even race in a local event of interest. GHiT 0343: Live Race Update from the 2022 NJMP Thunderbolt Race with the 24 Hours of Lemons
GHiT 0343: Live Race Update from the 2022 NJMP Thunderbolt Race with the 24 Hours of Lemons (We do plug in the microphone after ~5 minutes, lol) In a shortly, mostly live episode from the NJMP Thunderbolt paddock, Vicki and Jen are joined by Audra and Jess from the Shifting Points podcast to talk about day 1 of this years 24 Hours of Lemons race. The ladies were driving in our 1993 Honda Civic DX that had a tribute livery to our friends at the Everyone Racers podcast and the Three Pedal Mafia, along with Chrissy and Chris's Mom (and Dad). If you know, you know. Audio quality was a bit off as we were outside and had several friends come by to "help" with the podcast. It was a great weekend and we will have our normal wrap up episode as soon as we can. As always, the race hangover is real. GHIT 0342: The Tyler Stank
GHIT 0342: The Tyler Stank After having better answers to several of our Dominating with Dawson's, it was only appropriate that we invited him onto the podcast. We first met Tyler while iRacing and have since been paying attention as he has begun driving in the real world as well. His middle name really is Ayrton and there can be no better reason to have him on the podcast, but he is also notably the first person to drive each of the three versions of mini truck in the 24 Hours of Lemons endurance races. Stay tuned for several stories related to "driving" a car on iRacing with a French horn and other non-standard inputs. We also interrupt the episode with the first ever Dominating with Dawson with a guest judge Tyler to address the best modifications to make your car faster. Both Ben and Tyler get it wrong. DwD 0341: The difference between building a car and developing a car
DwD 0341: The difference between building a car and developing a car Race Weekend Shuffle in place: We have talked a lot about building a race car and prepping a car for the track. But that Is only the beginning and just when you thought it was over, it has only begun. The best way to think about it is that you now have a ticket to enter the event and part of your future will be developing the car and improving it. There are things that will always need to be done. Some of these areas are to increase the performance of the car. Many of these areas are to improve the durability and reliability of the car. There is also a set related to optimizing the car by dialing in the various settings and options within the car that you will be using to improve the performance on a given track or day or weather or. Undoubtedly this is the first part of a multipart series. On this episode Ben was joined by guest judge Jeremy Hall, Vicki, and Bill. GHIT 0340: Getting the Most Out of Instruction at a Track Day or HPDE etc
GHIT 0340: Getting the Most Out of Instruction at a Track Day or HPDE etc Track time is a precious commodity. It is often difficult to fit into your schedule, it takes a significant amount to prep for a weekend (both the car and the driver and often simply getting to the track). It is also not free to attend the event. We try to give some examples of what to do and what not to do before an at an event. Also, given this, one of Bill's obsessions is in getting the absolute most he can from each event, and even every stint, especially for our team and his HPDE students. We use a standard debrief sheet for each event and have fount i to be very helpful and increase the progression of each of our drivers, especially as you progress and improve since you will often be driving without an instructor directly assisting you every stint. If you have any interest in getting a copy of out sheet, or our track walk/track notes template, please let us know in a podcast review or on our social media, or send us an email at [email protected] and we can share it with you. GHIT 0339: Late to Grid Podcast Host Bill Snow
GHIT 0339: Late to Grid Podcast Host Bill Snow Our paths have crossed seemingly many times, but we have never met until now. The Late to Grid podcast is aimed at covering amateur racing and helping grow our sport. Since our podcast goals are almost identically aligned, we thought it would be great to have Bill on and share some stories and maybe we could learn from him some of his vast mechanical skills. We talk about all things racing, his home tracks of Mid O, PittRace, and Nelson Ledges. We also go into his podcast, how and why it started, and what he envisions for the future. Then we try to find out what led to his current RX7 racing and if it is potentially curable. We then make plans to meet at a then upcoming event with NASA Great Lakes at Mid-Ohio, but car issue son our end prevented that from occurring. 2) We talk about Bill's home track Nelson Ledges, PittRace, and Mid-Ohio for a bit and the first SCCA Enduro event that they held and we discussed in an earlier podcast with Jon Krolewicz from the SCCA (podcast # 331). 3) We also take advantage of his Mini experience and look for likely areas to work on with the ladies from Shifting Points podcast this summer. GHIT 0338: Jess From the Shifting Points podcast's First Track Day
GHIT 0338: Jess From the Shifting Points podcast's First Track Day We have an upcoming race at NJMP's Thunderbolt track next weekend, so we took advantage of the NASA Northeast's HPDE event this weekend to get a bit of track time for our friends from the Shifting Points podcast who will be racing with us. This will be Jess's first ever race and today was her first ever track day and great preparation for the race. Vicki was going to explode if we made her wait any longer for a review of the day, so here is an unedited episode with Vicki and Jeremy asking Jess about her first time on track. Oh, Bill was there too. Audra and Lisa will be arriving tonight for Sunday's events. DwD 0337: Dashes, Switches, and Control Panels
DwD 0337: Dashes, Switches, and Control Panels Vicki has been hard at work upgrading our dashboard and controls in our Honda Civic race car. She also has a favorite past time at a track by looking into each car and trailer set up to see what others have done and ideas that would improve our cars (and trailers). We thought it might be a good thing to discuss and provide a list of things that we like to see on a car and have found to be helpful in maintaining the car or preventing the car from having bigger issues. GHIT 0336: NASA's TREC Endurance racing series with Bryan Lingruen
GHIT 0336: NASA's TREC Endurance racing series with Bryan Lingruen As you know, we love endurance racing. Endurance racing allows us to get a huge amount of track time and competition in a single weekend. NASA has recently started an endurance racing series to compliment their sprint racing and HPDE weekend events. The TREC series currently races at the same tracks on a Friday and the races range from 3 hours to 8 hours depending on the event and the venue. We talk with Bryan Lingruen about the start and history of the NASA TRES series and how NASA Great Lakes organizes and holds their events. DwD 0335: Bought Not Built?
DwD 0335: Bought Not Built? One of best things about racing is how welcoming racing has been to us and in general to everyone we see at the track. One related aspect of this is the application of a built not bought aspect to racing that is often used in jest, but can divide the paddock, either by accident or intent. However, just because you or your team may have mechanical experience and talent, which does not imply that a team or person that does not should be excluded from the sport. We discuss this and several other areas that can be seen to prevent others from joining our sport. Even Fake Jen makes an appearance on this episode along with another great Alan Story. GHIT 0334: How to Test Your Car at the Track with Scott Robertson
GHIT 0334: How to Test Your Car at the Track with Scott Robertson We often hear how important it is to test your car prior to racing. While listening to Scott's Track Walking podcast (a can't miss podcast), Scott was discussing how he and Becky were able to conduct a full track test and tune evaluation of their vehicle during a recent HPDE. Since Scott is a respected coach and offers a service to help a driver to dial in their car at the track, we thought he would be a perfect guest to discuss how to best conduct a test and tune day most effectively and efficiently. We start the discussion with what a test day means and work our way up from there. This was recorded several weeks ago prior to the 2022 One Lap of America where Scott and Becky entered the OLoA in their Mazda 2 Sundae Cup car lovingly called Mooncake. If we could go back in time, we would have asked how that car was able to come in second overall on the skid pad event versus some very capable and sometimes expensively prep'ed vehicles. This includes aspects of what tools you have, what you are capable/willing to change at the track. 2) Some examples of the testing order and priority. Things to do and things not to do. 3) One of the key aspects is to determine what you are trying to get from the process, i.e., driver experience/education or car optimization etc. 4) We also cover some of the key changes that you would like to change, as well as what tools you need to have for some of the key areas you will likely test. Hint: you will need a good tire pressure gauge and ideally a tire thermocouple or equivalent. 5) The best aspects of seeking an outside perspective or even better an experiences coach or F1 engineer, or even somewhere in between. 6) Ideas of things that you would like to test, including front sway bar (full hard to disconnected), rear sway bar (same), shock sweeps (full hard to full soft), rake adjustment, alignment, aero, tire pressure, etc. 7) Tips on how the impact of driver adaptation can affect the tests. 8) The importance of testing documentation and how it can help you going forward. A partial list of the items to summarize include the weather, track conditions, alignment, tires and condition, driver etc. This will eventually lead towards secondary goal of building you set up database for the car and the tracks 9) We go into last year's One Lap of America and the (at that time) upcoming 2022 which since been completed. 10) Scott and Becky finished first in class and 54th out of 84 entries for the entire event and stunned the world on the skid pad with a 2nd place overall. GHIT 0333: One Lap of America 2022 – Marlon Sumlin – Sundae Cup Class
GHIT 0333: One Lap of America 2022 – Marlon Sumlin – Sundae Cup Class In the first of a series, we reflect back on the 2022 One Lap of America with Marlon Sumlin who completed the event in his Mazda 2 Sundae Cup car. This was Marlon's first One Lap of America, and it will not be his last. We talk about Marlon's impressions from his first OLoA, how it is to compete in a low horsepower, Sundae Cup car, and what he learned from his first event. As always, it seems like the first OLoA event leads to an annual habit and we cannot wait to try our first One Lap of America, hopefully next year. DwD 0332: Pit Stops – Practicing and Some Best Practices
DwD 0332: Pit Stops – Practicing and Some Best Practices Once you start to progress as drivers and as a team, one of the more important aspects of racing and one of the most overlooked and potentially ignored aspects of endurance racing is minimizing you time lost on track during the pit stops. As always, the over-riding most important aspects is to maintain focused on the safety of you, your team, your cars, and the fellow teams in the pit lane. We also offer a few of the lessons we have learned along the way during our journey. Ben and Bill have apparently taken a silly pill during this episode and digress down a few different paths of humor(?). Tips on harnesses, cam locks, radios and radio connections, pit entry prep by the driver, driver order optimization, pit organization tips/5S/Kaizen boards, detachable steering wheels, etc. If you have any further hints that you'd like to share, please let us know in a podcast review, on our social media, or send us an email at [email protected] and we can share it in an upcoming Dominating With Dawson. GHIT 0331: SCCA's New Endurance Racing Series with Jon Krolewicz John Krolewicz has been racing for many years and helped start the Track Night In America Program for the SCCA. Now he is organizing the new SCCA Enduro series that is kicking of shortly with their first race at Nelson Ledges. The Sports Car Club of America is one of the oldest performance car organizations and hold nationwide races, autocross events (called Solo in SCCA lingo), and training and education events like Track Night in America etc. The SCCA is looking to expand into endurance racing and has taken a look at all the other classes and series and developed what they hope to be an easy way to enter the events and should prove popular in the coming years. During this introduction to the series we discuss the logic and development of the Enduro series and how it will be organized and work a the first event. We hope to have John of a friend on to review the first ever event and see how the best laid plans went and what, if anything they find that can be further improved. DwD 0330: CPR and Racing – Correct, Pause, and Recover)
DwD 0330: CPR and Racing – Correct, Pause, and Recover) CPR is typically referred to in a medical emergency. But in racing, CPR is in reference to Correct, Pause, and Recover when you are out of sorts on the track. The thought behind the acronym is that when your car gets out of shape or out of control on a track, one of the things that should be taken into consideration is that this can often require a procedure where you not only correct for the issue/error, but you must wait an appropriate amount of time for the correction to take effect on the car. This allows the change to be transferred to the car through the vehicle through the suspension and then after seeing the car respond, the driver will then have to finish the process with a recovery to continue along the desired pathway on track. This is because the correction will often lead to a change of course that requires a further input to track properly. The unique aspect of this process is being relaxed enough to wait and feel the pause before applying the recovery before the correction has taken place. Without the pause, a driver can often get caught up in greater and greater oscillations and get "behind" the vehicle and end up in a worse condition than the original issue would have caused. This is likely part one of several episodes. GHIT 0329: Lemons Rally Wrap Up of the Recent Four Corners Rally with Jeff Stobbs
GHIT 0329: Lemons Rally Wrap Up of the Recent Four Corners Rally with Jeff Stobbs Rally Master Jeff Stobbs returns to summarize the recent Four Corners Rally. We missed the daily updates for this one due to a whole buffet of reasons, including multiple times zones, work travel, food sickness, etc. So instead of our nightly updates, we thought we would try a summary of the entire event. We will return to our previously scheduled daily updates on the next rally. Or at least we will try. It sounds like we missed a good rally and some bad food. Oh, and Bill forgot his microphone cord so he decided to speak through a paper towel roll, as is tradition on endurance racing podcasts across the country. And the world. GHIT 0327: John Kolesa on AER (American Endurance Racing)
GHIT 0327: John Kolesa on AER (American Endurance Racing) John Kolesa started American Endurance Racing several years ago and Bill had a great time racing with the series at PittRace, so we had to have him on to officially introduce everyone to the series if you are not already familiar with AER. Since starting the series in 2014, AER has assumed a position towards the more competitive/higher performance segment of the amateur endurance racing community. The series was desiring to be more open to different cars and modified cars by having a simpler classing process that uses qualifying times to initially calls cars and then can re-classify cars throughout the weekend if there are drivers with significant range of skills on a team. The top class is an exhibition class that is based on a power to weight basis. The technology that AER uses during the race weekend is among the best we have seen in amateur racing. In addition, the Flagger system was a welcome addition to tour car and helped improve the communication between the series and the individual drivers and cars. 5) Upcoming changes and additions to the upcoming races. 6) AER is currently running a special that allows new teams to enter a race weekend and have a reduced cost or even free. 7) We address several of the criticisms and concerns about the series and hope you will feel comfortable entering one of their races yourself. 8) Challenges the series faces with upcoming events and tracks. 9) We speculate on the effect that modern cars may have on grassroots racing in the future. DwD 0326: Driving "What You Got" On Track - Two Ways
DwD 0326: Driving What You Got On Track - Two Ways On this episode of Dominating with Dawson, we go over two aspects of driving on track with the "car" you have. This was originally intended to address the aspect of driving the car you have and adapting your driving to the car as it is during a weekend or a stint. Most of us are not fortunate enough to have the ability to dial in a car on the fly while on track and most times you have to make the best of it. The discussion also went into going to a track event with almost every one of your daily drivers in the current condition and not waiting until you install a blank or add a new blank. In the end, the more seat time you have and the more car behaviors you learn to drive and adapt to, the better your skills will be and the faster you will be in a different car or track or weather or tires etc. in the future. Just get started and make the best of any time that you are blessed and able to have on track. At the AER event, the team performed well on Saturday and finished P2 in our class and P4 on Sunday. The next weekend at PittRace was a 24 Hours of Lemons race and Alex drove with Dave and Jeremy for the weekend. DwD 0323: The Return of Two Feet In
DwD 0323: The Return of Two Feet In We return to the topic of two feet in to make sure everyone is on the same page and why we would be strong supporters of knowing when it is time to employ this technique. The key aspect of this is to get your feet off of the throttle or gas pedal and press down hard on the clutch and brake if there are three pedals or just jump on the brake pedal if it is a two pedal car. This will reduce the kinetic energy of the car, reduce the likelihood and severity of contact, as well as helping other car drivers in being able to predict the path you will be travelling. That sounds like a great technique and please use it as quickly as you can when you get to the point where you know you aren't going to be able to correct the issue or especially when it is more dangerous to try to catch the car than manage the error and live to fight another day. GHIT 0324: Race Review – AER at PittRace Team Review
GHIT 0324: Race Review – AER at PittRace Team Review The team from the Skunk Oil Racing team finally convenes to review our recent AER race at PittRace. It was many of our teams first ever AER event. The team performed well on Saturday and finished P2 in our class. Sunday, we performed similarly but our fellow racers had a bit more good fortune, and we ended the day in P4, almost a two-podium weekend. This was recorded right after we all returned from the race and the post-race hangover was clear. Even our internet connection was taken down by a power outage so there is a discussion discontinuity about 20 minutes into the episode. It was a great weekend with all the teams at the event and we want to thank AER and everyone at PittRace for another great event. This is a relatively new team and the E36 BMW 3 series that we are still shaking down after our less than stellar start with Lucky Dog about 4-5 weeks ago. What we did well, what we forgot to bring, and a whole lot more. 2) The team's impression of AER and how our car fit into the field overall and our class. We would love to have a few of the teams that normally run in the AER series on the podcast and discuss their experience within the series. 3) How our pit lane "strategies" diverged from several of the neighboring teams on pit road. Think Formula 1/Indy car/IMSA levels vs our loving version of the Benny Hill show. 4) What we are doing to try to do to run the same car the next weekend again at PittRace. 5) Axle Gate (both the BMW and the enclosed trailer) and Seat Gate jokes abound 6) Much like the following weekend, it snowed again on Sunday. We are beginning to think that we did something to the PittRace area. 7) Vicki has a bad series of defenses of the met half way plan. The pre-race hangover is apparently a new thing. 8) While it sounds like we were a total circus all weekend, we actually did fairly well. Further evidence that "You too can go racing" 9) Don't miss Ryan singing. It is worth the wait. 10) Don't worry about the police sirens at about 1hour 15 minutes in, they weren't for us. No seriously, not us this time.

GHIT 0322: Race Review of our 2022 Lemons PittRace Event Tim, Vicki, and Bill are excited to review our latest race at PittRace with the 24 Hours of Lemons series. It was a great weekend and we were joined by Ben after a bit of intro discussion. This was Tim's first Lemons experience but he is an accomplished driver, racer and instructor of instructors. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights for this episode include: 1) Tim's response to the three primary (false) criticisms of racing in the 24 Hours of Lemons series: safety culture, driver skill, and the quality of cars. The cars are usually criticized for both being junk and for being too racey, a difficult thing to do at the same time, lol. 2) The weather was a series of just about everything except hot. Tim was also exposed to 110 cars on track Saturday during a snowstorm, sleet, rain, muddy track, etc. A true trial by fire in all the best ways. 3) Vicki was out for a quick Friday practice to acclimate to the front wheel drive car and shake off some winter cobwebs. Mother nature thought she was doing so well that she decided to bequeath unto Vicki almost an inch of sloppy snow/hail during her lap. Vicki returned the favor and trimmed some of the grass for her as well. 4) Tim was also able to cross off almost every type of weather during his Saturday stint. However, we still give him a little good natured ribbing about his two black flags. 5) The rest of the weekend was something you needed to be there to truly understand. PS Tim is desperately looking for a recipe from the pot luck
GHIT 0321: Dave Mills Post our AER Race at PittRace
GHIT 0321: Dave Mills Post our AER Race at PittRace Long sought after guest Dave Mills is finally on the podcast that you may know from his online presence as the Caddy Wrecker. Dave is a long-time racer, rallyist, and was working with the AER team at our race last weekend at PittRace. With so many things to talk about, we try to get a review of Dave's rally and racing exploits as well as how he saw our race from the tower. We also cover the Flagger system that was in our car that we mistakenly called by another product in our prior race review episode. Please welcome to the podcast guest family. Looks its Dave!!! 2) Some great tips about looking at what the better teams are doing and learning what they do and what they don't do, especially in the pits and paddock areas. This literally can be the difference between winning a race and being midfield or worse. 3) Dave has had quite a few unique rally experiences, especially the rally that occurred right as Covid was ramping up early in 2020. He may hold the record for the longest time spent on a Lemons rally. We are also not sure if that is something to be proud of or not. 4) How Dave's professional experience has helped with the Flagger system that is being used by AER and is being reviewed by several other racing organizations. Hopefully more to follow on this system in an upcoming podcast. 5) We revisit the internet video where one driver missed a vast series of yellow flags. If you missed it, the first video was on VinWiki and the actual rebuttal is available separately. 6) What it is like to be "running" the race vs running in the race. 7) As Dave is our first guest from AER, we go into a brief discussion of the differences between AER and several of the other series we usually discuss. Especially the required pit stops system and some of the technology that the AER series employs in this mostly amateur series. 8) Dave askes for some help in deciding on his next daily driver. A podcast first and perhaps our first public service announcement. 9) Dave's experience living off grid. Its not for everyone, but he gives some tips and tricks that made it better. DwD 0320: Error Corrections – Good Ideas and Bad Ones
DwD 0320: Error Corrections – Good Ideas and Bad Ones Due to back to back race weekends, we were not able to get our usual Monday episode edited in time, so we are switching this week's Dominating with Dawson to one day early and editing the regular episode for tomorrow. With that, here is the latest DwD. Not having ever made a mistake on track (lol), we ask Ben what to do when an error occurs on track during a corner and what to do to get back into the rhythm and normal sequence. The core issue is to take your medicine and realize that you cannot make up any of the lost time. The worst thing that you can do is to compound the error and make the lap time even worse or potentially increase the likelihood of getting into a situation which can lead to an incident that may cost you the race, the car, etc. One thing we try to stress is to be prepared for the potential and have a predetermined series of responses for each incident or situation. This is a key part of growing as a driver and improving your skills through experience. The goal should be to make the best of the situation as possible and minimize both the loss of time and risk to you, your vehicle, and your friends/teammates/competitors on track.
