GHiT 0319: Race Recap: Our First AER Race at PittRace - Part 1 - Bill's Side

GHiT 0319: Race Recap: Our First AER Race at PittRace - Part 1 AKA Bill's Worst Race Weekend Driving - Ever In the first part of at least three parts of a series, Bill goes over his first ever race with AER (American Endurance Racing) at PittRace last weekend.  AER is a series that targets more serious racing and the cars on track were quite impressive.  However, the team did well and we actually came in second in class on Saturday.  Bill on the other hand had his first ever bad track day and probably drove more in his head than on track.  We thought it would be useful to do a quick race recap covering what happened on track and in his head, as well as what we are going to do and change going forward. This episode deals only with Bill's perspective and his internal issues.  While he is still processing the weekend,  Also, Ben calls in for an emergency DwD episode to talk Bill off the cliff. On an upcoming Part 2, we have another episode coming that will cover the race from the perspective of a friend who was working with AER this weekend. On an upcoming Part 3, we will have the entire team from the weekend if schedules allow. We also look forward to a future AER specific episode as well. DwD 0315: Driving in the Spring and Cold

DwD 0315:  Driving in the Spring and Cold In an effort to be timely, driving in the early seasons can often be tricky since the temperature can often be lower than desired.  We start off covering what to do to account for the decreased temperatures and then we wander off into other areas that are affected by the temperature and humidity.  We start to cover taking care of your hands in the cold and then move into the preparation of the windshield surfaces and the potential ways to prepare the helmet visor and drivers glasses for potential fogging and streaks.  We cover our best techniques for the windshield, but we are still working on the helmet visor and drivers eye glass lens.  If you have any other ideas, please let us know.  It will save Bill a lot of time in the lab.  Lol.  A link to the episode is: https://tinyurl.com/ColdDriving If you would like to help grow our sport and this podcast: You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc. Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating, that we would appreciate that very much.  Even better, a podcast review, would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving and we would appreciate it. GHIT 0314: Audra Tella on Autocross and a Pre-Intervention

GHIT 0314:  Audra Tella on Autocross and a Pre-Intervention It was almost spring, and we were thinking about ways to get out and start having fun with our cars again.  We thought it may be great to go autocross'ing, especially to start the season.  Since we were thinking autocross, we thought we'd invite Audra back to the podcast to talk all things autocross.  Audra is one of the hosts of the Shifting Points podcast and is also one of the leads for the local BMW autocross group near Boston.  We talk about what to expect at your first event and what to do and more importantly what not to do to go to your first autocross event.  Then we launch our intervention plan.  This is part one of the plan.  Part two will be revealed in the next episode of the Shifting Points podcast coming out this Wednesday.  We started the podcast to get people started having fun with their cars.  Audra and her fellow podcast host are already enjoying their cars but, especially after seeing Audra last year at our Thompson race, we hoped we could offer to help them start driving or maybe even tracing on track.  A link to the episode is: https://tinyurl.com/AudraAutocrossandIntervention If you would like to help grow our sport and this podcast: You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc. Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating, that we would appreciate that very much.  Even better, a podcast review, would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving and we would appreciate it. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights for this episode include: 1)  What is autocross?  What you need to do to prep for the event and what you should NOT do to prep for the event or prevent you from going.  Bill goes full facetious for at least 15 minutes. 2)  Why are the cones there, what do they do and why does everyone seem to be angry with them. 3)  We break down the lingo a bit and show that your first event will be easy to start and learn.  Autocross drivers are very welcoming to everyone and would love to share their sport and all the fun. 4)  Audra introduces up to the internet.  It is a wonderful way to find an event close to you. 5)  How autocross is structured to even out the competition or break it down into groups of evenly matched cars.  Some even have special classes for novices. 6)  We also find out what vent is Audra's favorite event of the season.  We may have to attend.  Time to check the season schedule. 7)  What is Audra's schedule for the season?  Can we add to the festivities?  Or are we just bad influences?  Still TBD on that one. 8)  Why we all started podcasts? 9)  The devious plan is devised and launched?  Our planning for the Mini Intervention. 10)  Audra makes a prediction of the potential livery theme.  Is she correct?  Tune into the second part of this episode on Audra's Shifting Point podcast, coming soon, hopefully this Wednesday if life doesn't get in the way of editing.   To hear how part two goes, subscribe to the Shifting Points podcast and the episode will be coming shortly.

GHIT 0313: Track Day Recap from our HPDE Event with NASA Northeast at NJMP's Lightning Track

GHIT 0313:  Track Day Recap from our HPDE Event with NASA Northeast at NJMP's Lightning Track Jennifer and Vicki had their first trip the track this year at the NASA Northeast HPDE event at NJMP's Lightning track.  Our event prep had a few issues with our Honda Civic inaugural shake down.  The issue is still TBD at this point.  Jennifer was in the HPDE 2 group and Vicki was in the HPDE3/4 group.  Bill was primarily concerned with instructing two students this weekend, both we on a track for their maiden voyage.  The weekend was a mix of highs and lows, many highs and really only one low.  We go over our weekend and how everyone progressed.  Both Jennifer and Vicki improved significantly over the winter off season, and we go into several of their accomplishments and the details.  The post race weekend hangover is real, and we all tried to stay focused and coherent with varied results, lol.  Our next event is later this month at Lime Rock Park and then our back-to-back racing weekends at PittRace with AER and then the 24 Hours of Lemons.  We also cover some of the trickier aspects of growing as a driver and some of the precautions to be aware of, especially if you have a significant improvement on your speed. DwD 0312: Jargon: Tank Slappers

DwD 0312:  Jargon:  Tank Slappers – What They Are and What to Do – Probably Part 1 of a few, lol We ask Ben about what a tank slapper is.  Then we go into what is a typical cause for this phenomenon and most importantly, what to do about it when it occurs.  There are several strategies mentioned and probably a few more that would work as well.  We hope this helps you if you are driving in a situation when a tank slapper happens by having a few options and responses.  In addition, we have audience feedback from an earlier DwD episode on shift timing from Tyler.  After reading some of Tyler's well thought out response, we all agree that Tyler answered this question better than we did and he is invited to come on an episode of DwD or GHiT.  Thank you, Tyler.  A link to the episode is: https://tinyurl.com/TankSlappers If you would like to help grow our sport and this podcast: You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc. Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating, that we would appreciate that very much.  Even better, a podcast review, would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving and we would appreciate it. GHIT 0311: Samir Abid Returns for a Second lap

GHIT 0311:  Samir Abid Returns for a Second lap Samir Abid hosts the Your Data Driven podcast returns for his second lap with us.  We take advantage of his history in suspension systems and as a vehicle dynamics race engineer by asking the key question related to tracking data of "what should I keep track of" and how best to do this, especially if you are solo for the weekend as many of us are.  We also go into how to collect the data and how to analyze the data and ways of saving time and money, while remaining focused and efficient.  A link to the episode is: https://tinyurl.com/Lap2WithSamir If you would like to help grow our sport and this podcast: You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc. Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating, that we would appreciate that very much.  Even better, a podcast review, would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving and we would appreciate it. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights for this episode include: 1)  We begin with a definition of what the "data" is and how it can help you, especially as you progress and improve your driving skills. 2)  Initially, we start with nonquantitative data that is free and available to anyone if they pay attention to that aspect of their car and driving. 3)  Samir offers great insight in what you need to collect by first looking at the critical question that can bound your problem and simplify what can be a daunting subject "what problem are you trying to solve?".  This can not only simplify your data collection, but also save you a lot of time, effort, and money, that can be applied in other aspects of your driving and racing improvement program. 4)  Samir offers a logical sequence of how to break a track up into the most useful number of sectors.  This aspect alone can really simplify the analysis and capture the pertinent information that would allow you to improve. 5)  How to use the data to be collected and then move to the why before assuming the best plan to improve.  This will prevent a potential to ignore the core reason for the information that is being collected. 6)  We begin to go over the patterns and basic information that is available from the shapes and slopes of the speed trace and what that can tell you, as well as some of the shapes that are typical for certain types of basic corners. 7)  Things to look for:  The slope of the speed trace when accelerating (and the consistency)(and the length of time for your shifts).  The same would apply for the braking or deceleration aspects of the speed trace.  Other aspects would include the minimum speed of the turn and whether that turn is a gradual change that forms a U or a sharp change in slopes that resembles a V. 8)  A high level review of the G sum plot and the friction circle plot, that are often less intuitive than many would desire. 9)  Samir shapes his views on the minimum viable data collection systems and what they encompass, including several technical aspects like sample rate and other aspects that influences their utility.  We then look at several incremental steps up in equipment that are available commercially.  Since Samir has experience in the highest levels of racing, he has a great grasp of virtually all commercially available systems and their strengths and limitations. 10)  We also cover the minimum starting gauges that everyone should bring to the track.  We start with a stopwatch and an accurate tire pressure gauge and progress into more advanced measurements and equipment. 11)  As always happens, we get into the importance of the tires and how to adjust them to optimize grip and wear on track. We will be doing a review of many (10+) of these systems that we have tested in an episode coming very soon. A simple data collection hierarchy could be:  Lap Time, Sector Times, Speed Trace (speed vs distance), Lat g vs Long g, then reviewing the G Sum plot, etc. To keep up with Samir's latest information: Handy Links: The Your Data Driven newsletter:  https://www.yourdatadriven.com – Data analysis intro course:  https://www.yourdatadriven.com/the-complete-beginners-guide-to-motorsports-data-analysis/ His Book:  https://www.yourdatadriven.com/the-motorsports-playbook/ The Your Data Driven Podcast:  https://www.yourdatadriven.com/your-data-driven-podcast If you want coaching from Samir:   https://analysiscoach.com

GHIT 307: Race Weekend Recap: The Entire Team From Lucky Dog Racing at CMP

GHIT 307:  Race Weekend Recap:  The Entire Team From Lucky Dog Racing at CMP You have only heard a few of the stories from our Lucky Dog race at Carolina Motorsports Park a few weeks ago.  Now we unveil the entire team that went to the race.  Car owner David as well as the rest of the team including Alex, Ryan, and Matt.  We think we have determined the root cause of the problem we had at the race and a path forward.  As always, we all had a great time at the Lucky Dog event and cannot wait to return.  There was a bit of feedback initially that sounds like a duck quacking but it ends fairly quickly and we are blaming Alex, lol. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights for this episode include: 1)  We start with the important stuff:  who wins the snoring award for the weekend? 2)  What we did, what we brought, what happened, and how we ended up. 3)  What it is like to assemble a new team from several other teams and how the weekend went, what we learned and what we can learn from this weekend. 4)  Our individual thoughts on how the "new to us" car behaved on its maiden voyage to endurance racing and what we each thought of the E36 BMW.  Ryan and Alex are long time endurance racers, primarily in the Miata platform.  Bill has driven the E36 platform many times but had not been to the CMP track until this weekend.  David had also not been on CMP as well. 5)  We spend way more time discussing the teams qualifying session than the session actually took.  This is called foreshadowing. 6)  We then have a recovery/repair plan and get started the race Saturday.  Then we go into detail of the entire 8 hour race Saturday.   7)  Now the fun begins, as well as the work project for the weekend.  Ryan got a ton of really solid shoulder work welding above his head.  The post incident CSI that we conduct and summarize also takes more time than our racing laps did in total.  Perhaps the first reference of a brake caliper making sweet, sweet love to the rear suspension. 8)  We did allow him to rest a bit by welding a friends team shifter that had failed (again).  It should be problem solved from here.  9)  The details of our parts search and repair program to get the car back on track ASAP or at least for Sunday. 10)  We also have a short example of Podcast In Training that couldn't be edited out for your personal enjoyment. 11)  Even with a combination of team members with decades of racing experience, there is often growing pains in coming together as a team and operating smoothly and efficiently. 12)  With everything going on at a race weekend, we each learned several details of how the race weekend went and how several  13)  After a brief trip off the rails, we eventually get to "Oh God, it sings" and we eventually get back to our story.  Herding kittens. 14)  We have the beginnings of a recovery plan and then (a bit late) cover our roles and skills for and within the team.  The importance of roles and areas of responsibilities is so key to the performance of a racing team, it cannot be overstated. 15)  Apparently there will be a Cubano vs Meatball cook off.  Book your spots early if you want to be a judge.  Spots are limited. 16)  Ryan shares his parts transport system and Vicki is dumbfounded.  Bill has a new project. 17)  An accounting of what we did vs what we should have done and what we will do at the next race.   Special thanks again to Kyle Lockrow and Giggles for their help in making the results of this debacle a bit better.

DwD 0306:  Racing 101:  When and Why to Shift Your Car On Track On the latest issue of Dominating with Dawson, we talk about some of the details of both when and why to shift your transmission on track.  We start off with a bit of wandering, but eventually work our way towards a great discussion.  This will undoubtedly be the first of several episodes on this topic.  Quick Summary:  Ben Dominates.  Alex Denominates (but actually has a question related to this topic, alert the press).  Vicki starts off answering a totally different question.  Bill tries to herd several cats.   Sounds like a normal episode. DwD 0297: Track Driving - With Nanny's or Without

DwD 0297:  Track Driving - With Nanny's or Without On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we go into another listener submitted question from Ron Mexico related to driving on track with the car's driver nanny's on.  First we cover from a high level what a driving nanny is and then we go into our thoughts on driving on track with the nanny's "assisting" you and when/if there is ever a good time to use the nanny's.   So what do you do with the driver assistance aides on track?  Do you leave them on or do you turn them off?  What factors would influence the use of them, like weather and student driving level/experience etc.? If you would be interested in helping grow our sport of high performance driving and our podcast: You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc. Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating or even better, a podcast review, we would greatly appreciate it and it would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving. GHiT 0296: Mo Dadkhah

GHiT 0296: Mo Dadkhah from Hagerty's The Drive Within We first were introduced to Mo Dadkhah during our episode with Loni Unser and then we saw that he was on "The Drive Within" with the rest of the Round Three Racing  team (R3R) as they competed in the WRL endurance racing series.  The show is sponsored by Hagerty and appears on their site as well as the Motor Trend channel.  Mo is one of the drivers of the #701 Porsche Cayman that competes in the GP1 class within WRL.  During this episode, we go over Mo's racing history, the WRL series, the R3R team, and tons of details on the making of the show.  This show is being released ahead of the season ending episode that should be released this Friday.  "The Drive Within" is the first show that we have found that accurately depicts the highs and lows that each team and driver experiences during a race weekend.  It is a can't miss show and has a permanent spot on our DVR. A link to the episode is: https://tinyurl.com/MoDadkhah If you would like to help grow our sport and this podcast: You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc. Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating, that would be greatly appreciated.  Even better, a podcast review, would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving and we would greatly appreciate it. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights for this episode include: 1)  How endurance racing and consistency of effort has led to Mo's growth as a driver and allowed him to reach his current level. 2)  We go into how the Cayman #701 race car came to be the tool of choice that Mo drives with his team in WRL's GP1 class primarily against other Caymans and E46 BMW's. 3)  What Mo gets from his racing and how drivers are "compensated" even at the higher levels in the US.  Spoiler, none of us will likely be making a mortgage payment anytime soon. 4)  How the R3R racing team works and interacts at the races and what you can learn from them that will help your endurance racing team. 5)  Mo gives a great summary of the way that the WRL series classifications work and his thoughts on the way the series functions and keeps the competition level high but still more reliant on the driver, as opposed to the budget/checkbook.  6)  We also go into starting and filming "The Drive Within" and we start to feel a bit better about our iPhone and Android race weekend videos not being quite up to this level, lol.  7)  The R3R team is a perfect example that the team is not just about the drivers, it depends on each and every team member, both before and at the track, and when operating properly, it becomes a family. 8)  Tips on how to improve as a driver and tons of little items that R3R does as a team that everyone can incorporate into their racing program and team, even if it is a "team" of one. 9)  Mo uses a coach personally and we review his opinions on how a coach can help your driving and the differences between an instructor and a coach.  We need to try this in 2022. 10)  We come up with a new business plan.  No stealing please.   PS Don't tease Mo too hard after the least episode airing this Friday. PS2  Please let everyone know about the show and hopefully we can get a second season PS3  We gladly welcome Mo's repeated offers to become a "producer" of the show and secure some great episodes PS4  Let us know if you want to hear Mo subjected to the our fast and furious story time questions.  We have a bunch of other racing and driving questions for him as well.   To follow Mo further:  Instagram: @therealmodadkhah The Drive Within:  https://www.hagerty.com/media/series/drive-within/  Round Three Racing:  https://www.round3racing.com/

DwD 0295: Discussing and Defining Driving at "X" Tenths

DwD 0295:  Discussing and Defining Driving at "X" Tenths On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we talk about one of those concepts that is always discussed in the paddocks, especially at HPDE's and endurance races.  This week we go through a discussion of driving "intensity" that is often referred to in the arbitrary units of "tenths" as in driving at 8 tenths or 9 tenths or never drive at 10 tenths in an endurance race etc.  What does this really mean?  We discuss this after a quite side discussion on driving other peoples cars.  Then we wrap this up with a tremendous article that our friend Peter Krause and former guest wrote about an example of a quantitative description of his definition of each of the "tenths" from low intensity to the higher and highest levels possible.   We hope the discussion is helpful in not only starting to refer to each level on a common reference but also the discussion it leads to when describing and defining your own personal driving limits and target.
